The Maldives

Flight time: 10 hours When to go: December–April Average winter temperature: 28°C

There is no bad time to go to the Maldives. There is nothing bad about going to the Maldives at any time ever. They are perfect little islands, whichever you choose – tiny castaway-fantasy sandy islets, mostly with one immaculate resort, with various levels of splendidness. Even people who think they will get bored in the Maldives end up loving the Maldives. They're family-friendly , and for blissed-out beachy nirvana, they're hard to beat. And they're at their best during the British winter and a quite do-able 10 hours away.

Where to stay: Families will love Soneva Jani , a tropical never-never land where guests trail about the jungly interiors on push-bikes, throwing themselves down slides into iridescent waters and hiding away in The Den, a fantastical kids’ club of dreams that’s the largest in South Asia. Newcomer to the region Six Senses Kanuhura has quickly become a popular haunt for those wanting to eat well, exercise, learn something new and snuggle up close to nature. Flight time: 4 hours 30 minutes from London When to go: March–May; October–November Average winter temperature: 22°C

The eastern Mediterranean Sea around Cyprus may be chilly in winter, but the island gets plenty of sunshine all year, so there's a good chance you'll get T-shirt weather even in the coldest months. From March, the island's flowers start to bloom, and there's barely another visitor in sight. It's a great option for families too as it's only a short hop from the UK and there are plenty of child-friendly hotels once you're there.

Where to stay: Check in to Cap St George , where kids can roam free and explore the onsite horse ranch, head off on catch-and-eat fishing boat excursions and watch the latest Disney movie at the open-air cinema. Another prized address is Anassa in Latchi, where its elegant series of white buildings is particularly beloved for its multigenerational appeal thanks to a super slick kid's club and effortlessly chic adult-only spaces. For a child-free stay, adults-only Amavi is a glossy beachside bolthole with a fantastic rooftop sushi restaurant. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Cyprus .

Flight time: 7 hours from London When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 26°C

For year-round sunshine, spotless beaches and impeccable service a short hop away, Dubai is an obvious choice. The Palm, a manmade sweep of beaches packed with superb hotels, each with its own immaculate patch of beach, is perfect for family holidays . It's not all glass and shopping malls in Downtown Dubai: the Old Souk is a warren of glittering jewellery and pots, and the peaceful Dubai Creek hints at a time before the seven-star hotels and indoor ski slopes. Two new creative districts (Dubai Design District and Al Quoz) have gained the attention of the international art scene, too. To see the city in its best light, go in November when it's not too humid, and you can happily bronze by the pool all day.

Where to stay: For an intimate and “anti-bling” stay in Downtown Dubai, check into The Lana , the much-anticipated debut of the Dorchester Collection in the Middle East. Elsewhere the  One&Only One Za’abeel  is a food and spa destination in itself with a host of starry venues, including La Dame De Pic by Anne-Sophie Pic, DuangDy by Bo Songvisava, and Dylan Jones of Bangkok’s Bo.Lan, plus the first Middle Eastern Longevity Hub by Clinique La Prairie. For more, see our pick of the best Dubai hotels .

Thai islands

Flight time: 13 hours from London When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 32°C

The islands of Thailand are the stuff of castaway fantasies. White sand, rustic-chic beach shacks, a hammock gently swaying between two palm trees as a turquoise sea laps at the shore… There are dozens to choose from, and each offers something quite different, from the super-spas of Koh Samui to barefoot beach-bum in Koh Lipe, while Koh Lanta remains quietly chilled out with lovely places to stay on beaches that stretch for miles.

Where to stay: On Phang Nga, Six Senses Yai Noi has created the perfect castaway experience via a collection of stilted thatched-roof villas and a hilltop half-moon infinity pool. If you're headed to Phuket, Amanpuri has a special location on Pansea Beach, plus an impressive selection of restaurants and a world-beating spa. For something the kids will love, the railway-themed InterContinental Khao Yai Resort has upcycled vintage railway carriages serving as suites and an old-timey ticketing booth for a lobby. Tangier, Morocco

Flight time: 3 hours 40 minutes from London When to go: March–May Average winter temperature: 17°C

From the 1920s to the 1950s, port city Tangier was a playground for the maddest and baddest bohemians: Beat icons like Burroughs and Kerouac; glamorously demon-plagued playwrights from Tennessee Williams to Jean Genet. But it wasn’t just the romance of boxy white-washed buildings fanning along a too-blue African shoreline that brought them. The city’s status as a near-lawless ‘international zone’ made strong drugs, strong cocktails and other strongly sordid entertainments all-too-readily available. The Moroccan monarchy later enacted punishment: the city was left to rot. A new king and a new attitude have revived it, widespread restoration inviting a smarter vitality, where cafés-cum-bookshops and speakeasies retain a raffish-cool, without segueing into seedy. In a hilltop casbah, El Morocco Club is where the leisure class make easy work of looking beautiful while slurping oysters and sipping Mojitos. And though chaotic Marrakech isn’t short of designer riads to escape to, Tangier is an infinitely jauntier option, and with T-shirt temperatures to boot.

Where to stay: One of the best hotels in Morocco , Jasper Conran's Villa Mabrouka has become an instant classic since he renovated the former Tangier love nest of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in a magical secret garden by the Kasbah. Another buzzing address is the Fairmont Tazi Palace Tangier , which has been reborn following a renovation as a showstopping 133-room celebration of Moroccan Art Deco glamour.

Jade Mountain St Lucia

Flight time : 9 hours from London When to go : December–April Average winter temperature: 27°C

With its glorious beaches shifting gold to molten silver, dramatic piton peaks and thick rainforests offering up waterfalls and wildlife, St Lucia’s landscape is staggering, even for the Caribbean . Ribbons of protected coral skirt its shores, coves are flanked by coconut-laden palms and many of its hotels have scrambled uphill for front-row seats of those fabled Caribbean sunsets – a fleeting burst of crimson and orange. Inland, tropical rainforests heave and organic farms and cocoa plantations whisk visitors off on farm-to-fork and bean-to-bar tutorials. The island is at it's peak in December to March, when the humidity is low, rainfall is minimal and there's plenty of sunshine.

Where to stay: For a view of the island's famous Pitons, Jade Mountain has eight terrace levels cascading gracefully from a cliffside, so rooms – some with private infinity pools – enjoy sweeping views of the island. Another standout address is Sugar Beach , which occupies one of the most privileged spots in St. Lucia with its 96 rooms and villas spilling onto verandas with raised views over a calm turquoise bay. See our edit of the best hotels in St Lucia for more.

Cape Town, South Africa

Flight time: 11 hours 35 minutes from London When to go: December–February Average winter temperature: 27°C

Cape Town is always a good idea, but particularly around Christmas and New Year, when the fledgling South African summer sets beaches and vineyards aglow. The mere sight of beautiful crowds bronzing against its theatrical, cragged mountain backdrop will banish the winter blues in one blow. And just when you thought the Mother City’s raw good looks, smart art and design scenes and world-class food couldn’t get more appealing, it only goes and adds a pair of super-hot hotels, too.

Where to stay:  Set just off the coastal road between Camps Bay and Llandudno,  The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa  is built into its namesake mountainside, affording it quite possibly one of the best views of Cape Town. Another bolthole we love is Future Found Sanctuary , a transformed family house on the side of Table Mountain, from which you can drive to Cape Point, taste wine in the vineyards in nearby Constantia or simply lie about by the pool all day.

Flight time : 13 hours from London to Mahé (including one stop) When to go : October–November Average winter temperature: 29°C

Adrift in the Indian Ocean , a thousand miles from the nearest coast of Africa , the Seychelles are the ultimate fantasy-island escape. The archipelago has year-round heat and sunshine, as well as its fair share of rain. The wettest months in Seychelles are November to March, but temperatures never get too oppressively hot (meandering around 24ºC at night and up to 29ºC in the daytime, year-round). October is a great month to go for a hit of sunshine before it gets too rainy and the air is fresher.

Where to stay: Sitting south of Mahé, newcomer Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte Island is heaven for eco-conscious travellers who want close encounters with hawksbill turtles, reef sharks and stingrays. Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island offers up true Robinson Crusoe vibes, except you’ll also find exquisitely designed rooms, fine dining and exemplary service from the Four Seasons staff. Another standout is Six Senses Zil Pasyon , where the villas are the closest thing to super-smart, minimalist tree houses. For more options, see our guide to the best Seychelles hotels .

Flight time: 16.5 hours from London When to go: Bali is hot year-round. It is rainiest (and thus cheapest) November–April; but even when it rains, it's in short, tropical bursts. Average winter temperature: 27°C

Bali is a heavenly island with earthly pleasures. Back-to-blissed-out spa retreats so fine that Bali has developed a style all of its own: clean and contemporary, dark wood and linen whites. Parties, from flip-flop full-moon raves in hidden-away coves to the cool Potato Head Beach Club and The Lawn at the boho beach spot that everyone's talking about, Canggu . There's glamping here now and chic boutiques. There's art in Ubud . There are spas absolutely everywhere. There are beaches, of course. And the pools here are something else: a classy, jungly deep green shrouded by tropical leafery. Those incredible horizon pools high up overlooking the rainforest – that's classic Bali.

Where to stay:  Book ahead, and you could nab a night in one of the world's most popular Airbnbs,  The Hideout , a magical-looking two-story bamboo hut in Selat. In Ubud, COMO Uma Ubud is a welcome slice of stillness, where days begin with sunrise yoga classes at the hotel’s central pavilion before nourishing, Australian-style breakfasts served next to the trickling koi pond. At the edge of the Uyung River, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve has a gilded, glittering on-site temple, spacious villas with jungle views and spa treatments by renowned intuitive healer Ibu Ketut Mursi. See our edit of the best hotels in Bali for more.

Flight time : about 10 hours from London When to go : November–December, and March Average winter temperature: 25°C

Once a hiding place for pirate treasure and prohibition liquor, Harbour Island in the Bahamas is a colourfully eccentric retreat where every night is a party and every day more vibrant than the last. The sand is pink, the turquoise water is home to green sea turtles and orange starfish, and yellow-throated birds fly about the trees. Days on the beach are long and lazy, and the time of day is forgotten.

Where to stay: Eleven Bahama House is the ideal home-from-home, offering plenty of privacy. Adjoining rooms act as apartments with private shared living spaces and spacious sun decks. For a boutique stay, The Other Side is a small, gorgeous set of tents and shacks on Harbour Island.

Flight time: 12 hours from London  When to go: May–December Average winter temperature: 28°C

What Mauritius has over its Indian Ocean neighbours, the Seychelles and the Maldives, is its size and natural diversity and the fact that you can do it independently. Its beaches are still potted tropical paradises, and here you can rent a car and go exploring to find your own deserted cove, drive or hike up into its rainforested hills, take a boat out and go snorkelling or dive in its extraordinary underwater world. It has a bit of a reputation for overly groomed resorts – but it also has some of the finest beach hotels in the world, and you can find little boutique hotels right on the beach, too. Perhaps the best months to go to Mauritius are September, October and November when it's hot but not too hot (averaging around 25-28ºC in the day, a cooler 17-19ºC at night), and at its driest (the rainy season in Mauritius is from January til April).

Where to stay: The most spectacular stay might be Shangri-La Le Touessrok , a private island escape with two pristine golf courses, a pagoda-style spa and a sushi restaurant. For a fun Soho house-style atmosphere, try  LUX* Grand Baie  – there's a poolside DJ, a rooftop athletics track and a nightclub underneath its fabulous Asian restaurant, Ai KISU. For families, One&Only Le Saint Géran has the best kids’ club on the island. See our best hotels in Mauritius guide for more.

Papagayo beach Lanzarote

Canary Islands

Flight time: 3 hours 30 minutes from London When to go: Year-round Average winter temperature: 22°C

It's summer all the time in the Canaries, where temperatures average in the low-mid 20s all year round. As well as the well-known destinations – Gran Canaria , Tenerife , Fuerteventura, Lanzarote (pictured) – there are three smaller islands that are less visited and less spoilt: La Palma , El Hierro and La Gomera . They don't appear on the average British holidaymaker's mental world-map, and make for interesting exploring and winter sunshine.

Where to stay: The Ritz-Carlton in Tenerife made our Gold List in 2022 – a pastel-pink, Moorish palace mansion of a hotel with eight restaurants, a handful of swimming pools and a decadent spa.

Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

Flight time: 10+ hours from London When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 24°C

Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, on the Atlantic Coast, has a magical mix of ancient and buzzy-right-now cultures. Swim in its green ceynotes, discover temples, salute the sun beneath the glitterball gods with fashionistas on the beach in Tulum . Mix it up in colonial Mérida . Go barefoot on Isla Holbox . The best time to come is during Britain's darkest months.

Where to stay: Beachside retreat Hotel Esencia , beloved by celebrities such as Bella Hadid and Lupita Nyong’o, made our gold list of the best hotels in the world for 2023. Likewise Habitas Bacalar , a small – just 34 rooms – off-the-beaten track stay that hosts local vendors for guests experiences and uses traditional Mayan cooking techniques within its restaurant. For more options, see our pick of the best hotels in Mexico .

Taghazout, Morocco

Flight time: 3 hours 50 mins from London When to go: December–March Average winter temperature: 21°C

Once a slightly rough-around-the-edges hippie town, Taghazout is now Morocco ’s top surf destination. The sleepy fishing village on the Atlantic coast hasn’t lost any of its old-fashioned charm, and goats still wander gormlessly through the dusty tangerine-coloured streets while fishermen haul in their daily catches from rickety blue and white boats. For serious surfers, winter marks the beginning of peak season, and as the swell rips up, the break-chasing crowds arrive. Temperatures usually hover around a very pleasant 20°C, but Saharan winds often push the mercury up much higher. The places to stay keep getting smarter, offering surf lessons in the day and rooftop yoga at sunset. And even if you’re not into surfing, there are plenty of beautiful hiking trails nearby, camel rides along the beach and excellent fishing too.

Where to stay: 15-room, Afro-inspired Munga Guesthouse is owned by former pro surfer Mounir Bouallaq.

Flight time: 7 hours from London When to go : October–March Average winter temperature: 24°C

The mid-Atlantic archipelago of Bermuda , mythical setting for Shakespeare's Tempest , is a land of pink beaches, pink houses and brightly coloured shorts. It is Caribbean in nature, though it's much closer to the UK – so shorter flight times – and has a distinctive character all of its own. Its pink-sand beaches are lovely, too. Those along the South Shore are the glory of the island. Horseshoe Bay is the best known and most crowded, though Warwick Long Bay, a short way along the coast, is just as alluring. At one end of Horseshoe there is a little patch of sand the size of a playground, cut off from the rest of it by a rocky hillock.

Where to stay: We like the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club , a 19th-century retreat set right on the capital's harbour.

Flight time: 10 hours from London When to go: Year-round Average winter temperature: 21°C

'The Golden State' is an appropriate nickname; California is one of the sunniest of US states, with mild winters, little rain and plenty of sunshine, especially in the south. For a classic USA road trip , hire a convertible and hit the Pacific Coast road. State Route 1 runs 550 miles from Leggett all the way down to Malibu. It has famously beautiful views much of the way, and the best section is that from San Francisco through Monterey and San Simeon to San Luis Obispo (where the road drifts inland), although north of San Francisco the route is wilder and less crowded. Aim to drive southwards, to be closer to the sea.

Where to stay: In Los Angeles, The Hoxton has brought a healthy dose of European flair to the West Coast. For a classic stay, Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica has come to embody the finest of So-Cal's barefoot luxury. In San Francisco, Proper is a buzzy stay beloved for its eclectic decor and perennially-packed rooftop bar, Charmaine’s. See our edit of the best hotels in California for more.

Bora Bora, Tahiti & French Polynesia

Flight time: One full day from the UK When to go: Year-round (though March is particularly rainy on Tahiti). Average winter temperature: 28°C

In both geography and spirit, just about as far from a drizzly British winter as you can get. French Polynesia is made up of 100-odd little islands in the South Pacific Ocean, the best-known of them Tahiti and Bora Bora. They are out of this world. Castaway fantasy, ringed by reefs; the water unbelievable shades of turquoise blue; the hibiscus flowers Gauguin bright; everything bright and light and hyper-real.

Where to stay: The Brando is the area's biggest-hitting hotel – owned by Marlon Brando and set on a stunning, living coral reef.

Rajasthan, India

Flight time: 8 hours from London When to go: October–March Average winter temperature: 25°C

With its cities of pink, blue and gold, its romantic lakeside palaces and desert camps, Rajasthan is India 's brightest and most beautiful state. Go there and get carried away, whether you're getting stuck into the hustle-bustle streets of Jaipur , escaping into the desert around Jaisalmer, or floating wistfully across the lake in romantic Udaipur.

Where to stay: Six Senses Fort Barwara took almost a decade to transform the 700-year-old fort into a 48-suite hotel. Its small garden grows everything from desi roses to cauliflower, cabbage, guavas, and jamun, while the ancient temple spa blends Ayurveda with Six Senses’ inimitable touch. Read more at our Six Senses Fort Barawara review .

Flight time: 7 hours and 15 minutes from London When to go: October–April Average winter temperature: 26°C

Oman is a less-glitzy, laid-back alternative to Dubai – only the landscape here is more dramatic: wide open spaces punctuated by oases and desert towns; valleys fragrant with rose and sandalwood; hidden coves with golden beaches and brilliant-turquoise water. The capital, Muscat dazzles in the year-round sunshine with its grand mosques and bustling souks. Up in the far north-east, the Musandam Peninsula has some of the best diving in the Middle East (whale shark and turtles are the big draw).

Where to stay: Six Senses Zighy Bay is on a golden sweep of sand backed by the impossibly steep Al Hajar Mountains. To feel truly isolated, camp in handmade Bedouin tents among the epic sand dunes of the Wahiba Sands south of Muscat – it's the best way to find authentic Oman.

Flight time: 13+ hours from London When to go: October–April Average winter temperature: 27°C

With its lovely Caribbean climate, guaranteed warm and sunny days and very little rain, Cuba ’s weather is at its most reliable during the UK winter. The beaches down on the south coast may get the best sunshine and draw the biggest crowds, but there’s plenty beyond the palm-fringed stretches of sand. Havana ’s got its colourful pastel-hued buildings, cigars and Cadillacs, while the perfectly preserved Spanish colonial architecture in UNESCO-protected Trinidad makes the city feel lost in time. Elsewhere, there’s no end of nature reserves, lush forests, mountains and tobacco plantations to explore.

Where to stay: Gardens Havana is a sweet guesthouse in a faded, renovated townhouse in Havana.

Western Australia

Flight time : 20 hours from London When to go : November–March Average winter temperature: 35°C

The north-west coast of Western Australia is remote (it closed its boarders to the rest of Australia for over two years during Covid), beautiful and largely uninhabited. It has the least-visited of all Australia's coral reefs, Ningaloo Reef, a pristine 260km stretch of coral where thrilling encounters are fairly routine, whether you're diving or snorkelling. Turtles nest from November to March.

Where to stay: Como the Treasury in Perth is the city's smoothest stay, with a rooftop restaurant and beautiful bedrooms.

Flight time: 14+ hours from London (via Johannesburg) When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 27°C

Astonishingly, Namibia gets barely half a million visitors a year – while neighbouring South Africa receives almost 10 times that number. But as travellers are slowly beginning to discover, this is one of Africa’s most fascinating destinations: rugged, intrepid and dramatic. More than a dozen new camps and lodges have opened up over the past few years, each one rocking a more creative approach to conservation. Namibia is usually touted as a year-round destination, but in truth the searing summer temperatures can be oppressive. November to March may coincide with the country’s wettest months, but with the rain comes a stunning transformation of scenery. The arid desert morphs into a lush green carpet; swarms of migratory birds arrive, and animals start breeding. Rain is localised and comes in short, sharp bursts, so it’s unlikely to have too much of an impact on your trip.

Where to stay: Habitas Namibia offers an intriguing blend of safari , wellness and culture. For more, see our favourite off-grid safaris in Namibia .

privatepoolterrace ka'ana

Flight time: 16+ hours from London (via Houston) When to go: December–April Average winter temperature: 30°C

Belize ’s peak season coincides perfectly with the UK’s coldest months. Although temperatures remain high all year-round, January to March has the lowest chance of rain, making this an ideal time to explore this tiny adventure-packed nation. Bordered by Guatemala and Mexico, Belize attracts a fraction of the crowds of its neighbours, yet the natural and cultural diversity of this former British colony is truly compelling. It’s home to Mayan ruins, national parks, nature reserves and the Belize Barrier Reef (which forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the world’s second largest), all begging to be explored. The country’s jungly interior contrasts with a dazzling Caribbean coastline and hundreds of small cayes and islands, while a flurry of fresh hotels have all put eco-tourism at the top of their agenda.

Lamu, Kenya

Flight time: 17+ hours from London, via Nairobi When to go: December–February Average winter temperature: 32°C

When the Foreign Office slapped a travel ban on Lamu after the 2011 Somali terrorist attacks, it fell off the map. But now with sanctions lifted, crowds are starting to flock back to this far-flung African island that still feels totally unchanged by time. It’s long been a popular beachy bolt-on after an epic Kenyan safari, attracting curious travellers rather than flag-following sightseers. There are no vehicles, just donkeys and dhows, and the heady mix of Arab, Persian, Chinese, Indian and European cultures is mesmerising. After a few days in the UNESCO-protected Old Town, head south to the deserted beaches or drift over by dhow to the nearby Robinson Crusoe islands of Manda and Kiwayu. From December to February, temperatures average a steamy 32°C, making winter the prime time to come and enjoy the postcard-perfect empty sands and Lamu’s laid-back rhythm.

Where to stay: Seafront Peponi was built in the 1930s and has been a hotel since the 1960s, with an incredible pool, shady verandah and a list of former guests that includes Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall.

Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Flight time: 17+ hours from London (via Mexico City) When to go: December–April Average winter temperature: 30°C

Over on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, two beach towns sit side-by-side: Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo . They couldn’t be more different. Ixtapa, stacked with high-rise hotels and modern infrastructure was purpose-built for tourists, while, just round the bay, Zihuatanejo has kept hold of its old-world charm and sleepy-fishing-village feel. It’s a low-key beach retreat with genuine Mexican flair; fisherman flog their catches on the shore each morning, and the town centre is filled with historical cobbled streets and a buzzy market. Clutches of boutique properties sit right on the beach or overlooking the bay – which is a hit with surfers. It’s hot all year round, but October to April sees the least rain, making this a perfect spot for a hit of winter vitamin D.

Where to stay: We love the Thompson , which spotlights interiors from Mexico City-based studios.

Gulf of Chiriquí, Panama

Flight time: 13+ hours from London When to go: December–March Average winter temperature: 32°C

The Gulf of Chiriquí is nothing new – travellers have long been flocking to the white-sand beaches and dazzling turquoise waters of Panama ’s Caribbean archipelago. But the Pacific side is still significantly less discovered. There’s Islas Secas, a highly exclusive, privately-owned archipelago of 14 islands offering pristine beaches and one of the largest coral reefs in the Pacific, making it the perfect spot for diving and snorkelling. It's just under an hour from Panama City by twin-otter plane and is totally worth it for the privacy and seclusion once you arrive. The best time to come is from January to April, when the wet rainy season gives way to a few months of glorious sunshine and scorching temperatures.

Where to stay: Philanthropist Louis Bacon opened Islas Secas , home to four individually designed Casita sites and, three Tented Casitas, all located on one of the islands and sleeping up to just 24 guests.

Flight time: 13.5 hours from London UK (via Johannesburg, South Africa) When to go: April–November Average winter temperature: 26°C

This southern African country has the most astonishing coast – the beaches of Mozambique are out of this world. Great stretches of sand, wild and dune-backed; lapped by the beautiful Indian Ocean where humpback whales breach, where you can swim with manta rays in the Mozambique Channel. In the little islands of Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago , a protected marine park towards the south, there are sand-floor bars and simple thatched lodges, and the most sensational sandy islets in bluer-than-blue waters, like wisps of cloud in a summer sky. On the beaches of northern Mozambique you feel as though you're at the end of the world; off this coast are the dreamlike Quirimbas Islands, including heavenly Vamizi

For those keen to tread where others have not, Mozambique has a certain caché – savvy travellers have been returning, in small numbers, to this coast for the past 20-odd years – and a few new spruced-up hotels are starting to appear – but are keen to keep it all a secret. We say go now, before the secret is out.

Where to stay: In one of the 17 prettily stripped-back bandas on the southern peninsula's tip at Machangulo Beach Lodge .

The Philippines

Flight time: 15.5 hours from London When to go: February–May Average winter temperature: 31°C

More than 7,000 islands. Deserted white-sand beaches lined with tilting coconut trees. Protected marine parks with pristine reefs like giant tropical fish bowls. Surf breaks so phenomenal they draw the world's best pros. Low-key but slick hotels and villas. And some of the friendliest people on the planet. This is the glory of the Philippines .

Bahia, Brazil

Flight time : 11 hours from London When to go : December–May Average winter temperature: 26°C

Ecuador is less developed than Costa Rica , so expect an adventure — one with everything its Latin cousin has to offer, and more besides. Want wildlife? Take a luxury cruise into the Ecuadorian Amazon. Want surf ? Ecuador’s 1,400 miles of Pacific coast has plenty of that. And then there’s Quito , a much smarter capital than San Jose: a heady blend of steamy salsotecas, grand Andean vistas, and fabulous hotels in ravishingly restored colonial mansions (none more elegant than the peerless Casa Gangotena). You may have heard of another of its under-the-radar destinations, the Galapagos, too. Ecuador’s different geographical zones have their own, distinct weather patterns, but Europe’s winter is when the weather is warmest in Quito and the Highlands; driest in the jungle; and sunniest on the coast. Above: Laguna de Quilotoa is a beautiful crater lake in a secluded location of the Ecuadorian Andes.

The Andaman Islands

Flight time: 14 hours from London  When to go: January–March Average winter temperature: 29°C

Every bit as dreamy as the Maldives, but more satisfyingly off-radar, the Andaman Islands have smartened up. This tropical archipelago — geographically closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than its owner, India — has always been brochure-beautiful, but only recently blessed with luxury digs. Those far-flung beaches and impossibly pure waters were more reward for intrepid surfers and gap-year backpackers until now. But it was only a matter of time before this primitive paradise turned upscale. Havelock is the most developed of the 572 islands, the vast majority of which are off-limits to visitors (and populated by indigenous tribes). It’s here that Indian luxury hotel giant Taj has newly scattered 72 thatched villas under a rainforest canopy, fringing the fabled Radhanagar beach, widely said to be among the best in the world.   Winter is the clearest, driest time of year — particularly January to March — with temperatures around 29C.

Karnataka, India

Flight time : 9 hours from London When to go : October–April Average winter temperature: 27°C

Karnataka’s beach scene is every bit as beautiful, but rather less glowsticky, than Goa ’s, though it shares the same coast (the state of Karnataka is further south). Gokarna beach, often listed among India’s finest sandy crescents, is chilled-out, powdery and palm-fringed; beach-goers more hammock-swinging yogis than UV-painted ravers. Better still, there’s more to explore beyond browning and sun salutations. Hampi ’s magical, ancient temples and bizarre, perilously-stacked boulders have fascinated wanderers and vagabonds for hundreds of years.

Where to stay: Try trekking and then de-stressing at the Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa , in the emerald, coffee- and spice-planted hills of Coorg.

Vietnam

Flight time: 12 hours from London When to go: November–February Average winter temperature: 27°C

Vietnam may well be one of the most fascinating, beautiful and charming countries you will ever visit. Saigon is wonderful, colonial and quirky; Ho Chi Minh City has one of the world's best food scenes. And the coast of Vietnam – oh, the coast! The beaches are extraordinary. So much untouched beauty. Little islands and dramatic bays to explore by boat. Out-of-this-world beach-chic places to stay, right on the sand. And even though it's easy-going and luxury can be found everywhere, it still feels like a secret, still some sense of discovery about a trip there.

Where to stay: On a stretch of under-rated Vietnamese coastline, Regent Phu Quoc is a luxury gem with all the trimmings for an idyllic long-haul fly-and-flop.

Flight time: 7 hours from London When to go: October–March Average winter temperature: 28°C

Ghana’s ‘Africa for beginners’ reputation tips a hat to the ease of a trip here — stable politics, developed towns, functional transport. But it misses all the other things that make Ghana great. Like the capital, Accra, a spirited city stuffed to the gills with red-hot food, nightlife and art. See Urban Grill, Afro-Latin fusion helmed by Andrew DiCataldo, of Manhattan’s once-loved Patria; rooftop club Carbon, owned by Nick House of Mahiki; and Gallery 1957, with its knack for edgy homegrown shows that blow up on social media. Then there’s the beaches: bonfire parties and street food at Accra’s own Labadi. Winter months are hot — temperatures average around 28°C — so you’ll be glad of a bracing Atlantic dip. Alright, there’s no Big Five, but there are safaris: walking with elephants, world-class birding, humpback-whale-watching. Plus there’s that handy hour’s time difference in common with South Africa, with only half the flight time.

Where to stay: The soothing White Sands Beach Resort & Spa , an exclusive private members’ club just an hour’s drive from Accra.

Make the most of your trip to London with these expert tips © FilippoBacci / Getty Images

Even though I was born and raised in London, I’ve been caught out without a brolly (umbrella) in the rain countless times. I’ve felt the scorn of others when not noticing there’s a queue, and I’ve made the costly error of driving into the city. But as a local, I’ve made these mistakes so you don’t have to; I hope my experience and top tips help inspire a smooth and memorable trip to the UK capital.

A side view of a woman sitting on the London tube looking at her phone

1. Know your Tube etiquette

One easy way to annoy commuters is to not follow these very easy rules when traveling around on London’s Underground. Get your ticket, bank card or smart phone ready before you reach the ticket barriers so you don’t create a queue. Stand on the right when using escalators so passengers wanting to walk can pass. Let passengers off the train first (stand to either the right or left of the doors) before you board. Offer your seat to someone who may need it more, such as a pregnant person, an elderly person, someone who is disabled and so on. And definitely don't try to strike up conversations with the locals (if you want to blend in).

2. Skip the car

London ’s roads are small, its traffic is chaotic, and there’s hardly anywhere to park. Plus, you’ll be charged for driving your car in to the center of London – the congestion charge is £15 a day, while the separate ULEZ charge starts from £12.50 and only certain energy efficient or electric cars are exempt. The best way to get around is on public transport (although check on the TFL website or app for information on industrial action and weekend engineering works). Use the Tube, hop on a bus, or rent a bike or e-bike if in the center of the city; cycle maps, highlighting designated paths for bikes, can be downloaded online.

3. Bring layers (and a raincoat)

London’s weather is changeable – temperatures have been known to rise and fall by 20°C in a matter of days. Showers can happen any time of year so pack a brolly (umbrella) or raincoat in your day bag and wear layers that you can easily take off. In summer, always carry a bottle of water on the Tube (the deep tunnels were built before air-conditioning). And while the climate may be mercurial, don’t let bad weather put you off going about your day – simply switch to more indoor-based activities, there are hundreds of them to choose from.

4. Opt for comfort over fashion when it comes to shoes

Most people cover a lot of ground when exploring London, plus different terrains: grass in the many green spaces, long Tube escalators, slippery pavements and even cobblestones. Museums require leg work, as do bridges, boats and parks. Heels are pretty pointless in London, unless you are getting a door-to-door cab to a venue.

5. Make reservations for top restaurants

While there are plenty of terrific places to eat that welcome walk-ins (although be prepared to queue for the best joints), many of the best restaurants are booked up weeks in advance, especially new ones or those run by celebrity chefs. More restaurants have adopted booking policies and deposits since the pandemic, so if you’re looking for a unique dining experience, you will need to book ahead.

6. Do as the Londoners do and go to a supper club

Embed yourself in London life with a dinner party with locals; a supper club is a superb way to try home-cooked local food from London’s diverse community. These are locally run endeavors, taking place in people’s homes or taking over whole restaurants – try The Bridge Club serving British eats made with French cooking techniques in South London, Dinner Ladies putting on immersive food experiences, or Indian street food run out of local chef Dhruv Mittal’s flat.

7. Know how to order at a pub

There are unspoken rules when visiting a pub. One person – not a whole group – should go to the bar. Stand anywhere and wait your turn. If someone was waiting before you, it’s polite to signal for the bar staff to serve them first if they come over to you. When you go back to your table with the drinks, you just bought "a round". Now everyone at the table owes you a drink throughout the evening, each person has a turn at buying a round. Last orders are when the bell rings, and from this moment you have 20 minutes to finish your drink.

8. Go to a football game

Football rivalries run high in the city, with 17 football clubs, including seven Premier League teams and four Women’s Super League Teams. Giant temples to "The Beautiful Game" sit around London and are great places to feel the collective energy of the city, as locals congregate (come rain or shine) to watch their heroes on the field. You'll need to book tickets far in advance for Premier League Games, but women’s and lower league men’s games are usually easier to come by – and arguably far more fun to watch. Visit local team websites to book.

9. Be polite and embrace the art of queueing

Londoners (and British people alike) are big on manners, and not having any will get you into trouble. Say "please" and "thank you", and apologize if you bump into someone. Don’t stare at people on the Tube, and hold a door open for people behind you when you walk through one. Let people pass, and be sure to help people in need (people with buggies at the top of stairs, older people crossing the road etc). If there is a queue to the attraction you want to visit or a stall you want to buy from, join it – you’ll might not get into a confrontation if you skip the line, but you will be judged.

10. Make a plan, but don't go overboard

London is massive, so getting from one side to the other takes a couple of hours in a car (and that's if there is light traffic). Riding the Tube is quicker, but journey times can still be long if attractions are on either side of the city. Minimize travel times by exploring by neighborhood – do a day in Central London, another day in West London and so on. Plan on spending at least a few hours in the big museums and galleries, as there is so much to see. Take many breaks, grab lunch at a cafe or pub and pause to take in the views. It’s easy to get carried away with the energetic pace of London, but sights are more enjoyable if you adopt a more leisurely approach.

11. Don’t leave your stuff lying around

Don’t leave your bags unattended at public venues like stations, buses, theaters or museums, as this is likely to cause alarm and your bag may be removed – or stolen. Only take with you what you are able to carry for several hours. Luggage storage is generally rare in London, but hotels will likely store bags once you check out. Avoid carrying mobile phones in back pockets or where they can be easily swiped from your hand in the street. Never leave your phone or purse on a cafe table, opportunistic thieves will distract you and it will be gone before you realise what's happening.

12. It's an election year in London

The incumbent mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, will face an election race in May 2024 (he's been in the top job since 2016). This might not be particularly noteworthy for travelers, but it does mean there's greater incentive to make sure London is working well. Policing, housing and public transport are high on the agenda for all the candidates. Services have been expanded to support the rising number of "rough sleepers" in the city, with the visible issue of homelessness a concern for locals and visitors alike. Tube strikes, which brought the city to a standstill in 2023, have been averted but industrial action on national rail services in and out of the city continue. The city goes to the polls on Thursday 2 May, 2024.

20 Magical Spots to Watch Sunsets in London

  • David Angel
  • London , England , United Kingdom

This is my guide on where to watch the best sunsets in London and what time the sun sets in London through the year.

Seeing sunsets in London is one of the best ways to experience this great city. It’s impressive enough by day, but at sunset and dusk, it’s something else altogether, spectacular and utterly beguiling.

We’ve selected 20 London sunset locations for you to discover, from riverside walkways to skyscraper rooftops and busy streets to green spaces on hilltops in the suburbs.

We’ve divided these London sunset locations by area, and also advise the best time of year to seek out each of these sunsets.

Sunsets In London – When Is Best?

Image of sunset in nLondon with the Houses of Parliament and London Eye

London sunset times vary greatly, from around 4pm in the depths of December to 10pm in the balmy midsummer.

Some sunset spots in London are better in winter, whereas others may be better in summer. I mention when I think is the best time to experience each sunset in the guide below.

I have been photographing London for well over 20 years and would probably say that most of the best London sunsets I have seen have been during the shorter months, from October in mid-autumn through the winter to March and early spring.

Sunsets In London – Bear In Mind

Image of sunset in London with St PAul's CAthedral and Cannon Street Railway Bridge

All of the London sunsets locations we mention offer something of a vista, with plenty of sky visible, and the river Thames is the ideal place.  Many of them also feature some of the most famous buildings in London .

Most of these London sunset spots are free to visit, while some may require a reservation for the popular sunset time slot (you just pay for your drinks and / or food). Others are paid entry – we’ll flag these up for you as well.

When photographing sunsets in London, don’t just stay until the sun drops below the horizon. Wait 20 minutes or so for dusk, and a little longer for the lights to be turned on, the rich afterglow to develop in the sky and the magic to really begin.

Sunset in London times

Best sunsets in london – around westminster, 1. westminster bridge.

Image of sunset behind the Houses of Parliament London

The area around Westminster Bridge, with the stunning silhouette of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, is one of the best places to head for London sunsets. The silhouette shot shown was taken around County Hall, across the river close to the London Eye.

I also shot the later dusk view from the same area, with the sunset afterglow behind Big Ben. I was very lucky to get this, as a member of the Tripod Police asked me to desist. I managed to fire off two or three frames before being apologetically ushered on my way, and a good few years later they still move people on.

The view from Westminster Bridge at dusk is also great –   with a long exposure, the red buses whoosh by regularly, leaving a dynamic trail across your image.

Best time for this sunset: Autumn, winter or early spring (October to March)

2. London Eye

Image of sunset in London with the Houses of Parliament and London Eye

A great place to experience sunsets in London is high above the river aboard the London Eye . The ferris wheel is one of the most famous London landmarks, and takes you 500 feet above the city and river.

The London Eye is very close to the Houses of Parliament, and it’s worth the price of the ticket to see this alone.  If you plan on trying to capture a sunset from the London Eye, you usually (but not always) have to book in advance, so you’ll need to check your London sunset time in advance and plan around that.

I have only ‘flown’ on the London Eye in the daytime, and recall that the best shots were from the lower parts of the circuit. At the apex of the wheel, you’re a long way above the city, and amazing though the view is, it doesn’t make for particularly good photographs.

I would also look to try to book your flight for just after the sunset. The lights will be on the buildings and along the streets at dusk, and you’ll get far more detail than if you shoot as the sun is still going down.

Best time for this sunset: Autumn, winter or early spring

3. Albert Embankment

Image of the Houses of Parliament from the Albert Embankment at sunset

The Albert Embankment runs along the River Thames between Westminster Bridge and Lambeth Bridge, a few hundred metres upstream, with the Houses of Parliament facing you most of the way.

The Kinks singer Ray Davies spent a long time in St Thomas’ Hospital just back from the river, and this view later inspired his song Waterloo Sunset , which is probably the closest thing London has to a city anthem.

Best time for this sunset: all year

4. Trafalgar Square

Image of Whitehall and Big Ben at sunset from Trafalgar Square London

The monumental centre of London is one of the best places to be at sunset time in London. There are so many famous London landmarks to see there, with Nelson’s Column, the domed National Gallery, St Martin in the Fields church, the fountains and view down Whitehall to Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

Not to mention the constant flow of traffic, with red double decker buses and black cabs, and Underground subway signs everywhere.

As the sunset fills the sky with colour, the Square looks amazing for half an hour or so. And the beauty of it is it looks great at sunset throughout the year.

5. St James’s Park

This wonderful Royal Park is one of the best places for sunsets in London away from the river. The late afternoon light shines on the grand domed Foreign Office building on Whitehall, and the sun then slips slowly behind the lake and Buckingham Palace.

Best time for this sunset : March to April or September to October

Sunsets In London – Around South Bank and Bankside

1. waterloo bridge.

Image of Big Ben and the London Eye at sunset

Waterloo Bridge connects the Waterloo station area with Somerset House and The Strand, and is prime London sunset territory. It is the vantage point for one of the most famous sunsets in London, looking up the river to the Houses of Parliament.

There are actually several London sunsets to see from Waterloo Bridge. The obvious one is from the centre of the bridge, looking over the Hungerford and Golden Jubilee Bridges to Big Ben and Parliament, with the London Eye off to the left.

Another Waterloo Bridge sunset is from the approach to the Bridge from the Waterloo side. It passes above a side road in the South Bank complex, and from there Big Ben and the London Eye are framed by buildings either side.  These shots look best in late autumn and winter, when you may get lucky with a warm red London sunset sky.

If you cross the bridge you can see the City of London skyline and, in the distance, the skyscrapers of the Canary Wharf financial district. The sun shining on these towers at the end of the day can look amazing, and this shot works in the longer days of spring and summer.

Best time for this sunset – November to February for the view to Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, April to September for the City skyline and Canary Wharf view

2. OXO Tower Restaurant and Bar

Image of the City of London and St PAul's at dusk from the Oxo Tower BAr

This famous Bankside venue, below the landmark OXO Tower, is a restaurant and bar with outdoor seating and a brilliant view over the River Thames and the City of London.

You can dine inside or try to snag a table on the balcony, with a superb view over the Thames, Blackfriars Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and much of the City of London.

The sunsets behind or to the left of the bar for much of the year, but it’s a great place to watch the rich warm light on St Paul’s and the City, and the first twinkling of the night lights on the river at dusk.

Tip: The views of St Paul’s at ground level are great as well

Best Sunset Spot s in London – Around St Paul’s Cathedral

1. millennium bridge.

Image of St Paul's Cathedral and the Millennium Bridge at sunset

If you’re at a loose end on a London summer evening, one of the best places to enjoy the sunset is from the Millennium Bridge, looking towards St Paul’s Cathedral.

The Millennium Bridge offers one of London’s best  – and formerly wobbliest – vistas, an uninterrupted axis from St Paul’s in the north to Tate Modern in the south, and you can take advantage of the later sunset times in London if conditions are good.

The sunset – and dusk – from the southern (Tate Modern) end of the Bridge looks great from on the Bridge itself or from the side, which gives a view of part of the Bridge as well as the Cathedral.

Best time for this sunset: the longer months of spring and summer- April to August

Tips: there’s a good shot of several of the bridges in London as you stand in the middle of the Millennium Bridge just as the sun goes down – from there you see Southwark Bridge, London Bridge and Tower Bridge to the east.

The roof terrace of the Blavatnik Building at Tate Modern also offers outstanding views, but it has been closed for over a year following an incident there.

2. One New Change

Image of St Paul's Cathedral at sunset from One New Change rooftop bar

This shopping centre on Cheapside is across the street from the east end of St Paul’s Cathedral, and offers up a sublime view of Sir Christopher Wren’s mighty dome, which has dominated this part of the City of London skyline for over 300 years.

Take the elevator up to the rooftop, where you can buy a drink and head towards the prime viewing spot near the edge of the roof. If you’re lucky enough to get a clear sky like we did, I could go orange and pink like we had.

St Paul’s dominates the view to the east, so much so that you don’t see much else, except for the London Eye off to the left. However, if you turn towards the Shard, you get a great London dusk view across the river, with the skyscraper soaring seven or eight times higher than the tower of Southwark Cathedral below.

Best time of year for sunset: all year – our shot was done in March

3. Fleet Street

Image of Fleet Street London at sunset

I haven’t included many famous streets in London as sunset locations as most of them simply don’t ‘line up’ at any time of year. One that does offer some potential for sunsets in London is Fleet Street, the former home of many of the UK’s newspapers and magazines.

You don’t get a full-on sunset from Fleet Street but the late, low light does make things interesting. I’ve always liked the view above, which is from close to the famous Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub.

You can also see the tower of St Dunstan in the West church and the spires of the Royal Courts of Justice just beyond.

Also watch for the late light on the famous ‘wedding cake’ tower of St Bride’s Church Fleet Street, one of the most intriguing churches in London . Turn eastwards and you’ll see the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, a few minutes’ walk away up Ludgate Hill. The views of the Cathedral open out as you walk up the hill towards it.

Best time for this sunset: these shots were made in March – September would give similar light conditions.

Sunsets in London: Around Tower Bridge

1. thames path near st katharine’s dock.

Image of the Shard and Tower Bridge at sunset London UK

The title shot of this article is one of my personal favourite spots to watch sunsets in London.  It takes a bit of seeking out, but a short walk from tower Bridge takes you to St Katharine’s Dock, and then the riverfront. was there.

I sought out the Thames Path and found it very quickly. The Path briefly joins St Katharine’s Way before returning to the river next to the Tower Bridge Wharf Building.

Next to this, an open platform offers a superb view past the HMS President Naval Base and its jetties to Tower Bridge, with the Shard to its left. I didn’t photograph the sunset itself- the afterglow was the reason Iwas there.

Best time of year for this sunset:   I shot it in November, but it would also work well into some of the longer months

Additional tip: One of the most popular places to photograph tower Bridge is from outside the tower Hotel. The Girl With A Dolphin sculpture and fountain outside the Hotel has drawn photographers ever since its installation in the early 1970s. You may get lucky with pink clouds in the sky behind it, but keep an eye out for the tripod police!

2. Tower Bridge

Image of the City of London at sunset from Tower Bridge

Iconic Tower Bridge makes a great London sunset viewpoint as well as subject.  Walk around halfway along for a view back to the tower of London and the modern City of London skyline, Gherkin, Walkie Talkie, Cheese Grater et al. this looks best after sunset, at dusk when the lights give full effect.

Best time for this sunset: the longer months of spring and summer – April to September

3. London Bridge

Image of St Paul's Cathedral at sunset from London Bridge London

London Bridge is a great vantage point for both sunrise and sunset in London. As you look west upriver at sunset, Cannon Street Railway Bridge is in front of you, with splendid St Paul’s Cathedral off to the right.

This is one of the more exposed and windier sections of the river, but if you’re lucky with a gentle breeze and a good sky, this can be one of the better London sunsets.

Best time of year for sunset – ours was shot in summer (June), but this would look great any time of year

4. Sky Garden

The Sky Garden is a great vantage point over London no matter what time of day you visit, but the sunset time slot is possibly the best – and most coveted time to visit.

The Sky Garden is a free garden on the upper floors of the Walkie Talkie building. You normally have to book in advance – when we were last in London there were no sunset slots for around five weeks, but at the time of writing some slots are available two to three weeks in advance.

Walk-in tickets are occasionally available on weekdays, but don’t count on them being available.

Entry to the Sky Garden is free but it’s pot luck as to whether or not you chance upon a sunset. The view – through quite reflective glass – over the City skyline and river is superb.

Best time for this sunset: October through to February, when the sun sets before weekday closing time (6pm) – otherwise it’s open until 9 pm on weekends.

5. The Shard

Image of Southwark Cathedral and The Shard skyscraper at night London England

The View from the Shard has become one of the most popular London attractions since opening almost a decade ago. It’s twice the height of any other viewpoint in London, and you can see as far as 40 miles – 64 km – away on a clear day.

The enormous height doesn’t necessarily yield the best photographs as you are so far above the city that everything looks tiny. But it’s still an amazing experience, and sunset and dusk are the prime times to visit.

Sunsets In London – West London

1. the west end.

London's Theatre District

The West End is at its best in the evenings, when the lights of the many theatres, cinemas, restaurants and clubs come on and the streets are busy with crowds enjoying a night on the town. You get a hint of a sunset sky along some of the streets, especially Shaftesbury Avenue, which looks great with all the theatre signs illuminated.

Piccadilly Circus is the biggest open space in the area and you often get sunset colours in the sky there. There’s not a great deal to do there other than soak in and capture the buzz of the bright lights at the end of the day.

Best time for this sunset – spring and summer are best for Piccadilly Circus

2 . Albert Bridge, Chelsea

Image of the Albert Bridge Chelsea London at sunset

The Albert Bridge in Chelsea is my nomination for the most beautiful bridge in London. I’ve seen it countless times at night, as my coach from Cardiff would pass it as I made the weekly journey to Victoria to see my wife-to-be.

But sentiment aside, it’s a wonderful, elegant bridge, especially just after sunset when its thousands of lights are turned on.

There are several angles for an Albert Bridge sunset. If you walk along the Battersea Park side of the river, roughly halfway between the Albert and Chelsea Bridges, turn back towards the Albert Bridge for the orange and red glowing sky.

Stay around until dusk, when the shimmering lights of the Albert Bridge make a magical scene.

Tips: Even though this is quite a long way inland, the Thames tide makes a big difference to your shots of the Albert Bridge. At low tide, a large extent of muddy riverbed is revealed, so check your Thames tide times here.

The tower blocks of the World’s End estate also come into play, depending on how far along Battersea Park you walk. The Chelsea Bridge also makes a great subject at night.

Best time for this sunset: Most times of year

3. The Riverside Pubs In Barnes

Image of the White Hart pub and River Thames in London England UK

One of the best places to sit back and enjoy sunsets in London is at one of the riverside pubs in Barnes, in West London. This one is for the warm evenings of spring or summer, sitting al fresco at the tables of the White Hart or on the balcony of the nearby Watermans Arms with a pint or glass of wine. One of the best things to do in West London .

Best time for this sunset: May to September

Sunsets In London – North London

1. primrose hill.

Primrose Hill is a short walk from Camden Town and Chalk Farm, a small hill with a great vantage point over much of the London skyline. It’s a wonderful place to head on a warm evening with a picnic, takeaway and drinks to watch the light change on the landmarks of Central London, from the BT Tower to the City and Shard.

The sunset view from Primrose Hill – over Belsize Park – isn’t particularly special. Very few people look that way, as the sun sinks towards the horizon everyone is watching the rich light changing on the famous buildings of London, and the sky turns shades of pink, orange and red.

2. Hampstead Heath

Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath is the highest hill in London, 98 metres (322 feet) above sea level. Much of what we’ve said about Primrose Hill can also be said about Parliament Hill, in that the view of London from there is superb, and you visit at sunset to watch the changing light on the city below, and the colours of the sky warming up, as opposed to the sun setting behind some trees.

As with Primrose Hill it’s a wonderful place to bring some food and drink at the end of the day and watch it draw to a spectacular close.

Express Check-In: Pan Pacific London General Manager Anne Golden

The 33-year London resident shares, where to find awe-inspiring city views, some under-the-radar activities and the essential British pub.

Golden, a long-time London resident, knows the city very well.

If you want advice on London , Anne Golden can help. Golden serves as the regional vice president of Operations for the U.K. and North America and the general manager of Pan Pacific London , one of the hottest new hotels in the city and a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star winner.

The 33-year London resident says she loves the city. “It feels as if you are part of a global community, and there’s always something new to explore and experience,” she says.

To help your explorations in the U.K. capital, we quizzed Golden on her picks on everything from where to find awe-inspiring city views to the essential British pub.

Pan Pacific London’s chic accommodations.

What are London’s must-visit attractions?

The South Bank. Between Shad Thames and the Houses of Parliament, you walk past one of the largest concentrations of cultural institutions in the world, from 1,000-plus-year-old Borough Market, Shakespeare’s Globe and London Dungeons to the London Eye, Sea Life London Aquarium and Royal Festival Hall .

I also love Brick Lane for a curry and a vintage bargain, and [virtual concert series] ABBA Voyage is an incredible experience.

What are the best under-the-radar activities in London?

The City of London — also known as the Square Mile — conjures up business and tall modern buildings for many people, however, there are so many historical influences and stories to uncover, not just the “tourist” elements, such as the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

The city has its own government, mayor and police force, William Shakespeare lived in the city for a time and a Roman amphitheater was uncovered at the Guildhall in 1988 — it’s not just about financial institutions but more about the historical buildings that are still in use. Taking a guided walk opens your eyes to times gone by.

What are your favorite London museums?

The London Museum is amazing, also the Science Museum and the beautiful V&A .

What’s an unusual activity that visitors may not know about?

London isn’t all about what happens above ground — there are fascinating secret underground tunnels, disused stations, abandoned platforms and wartime shelters to be discovered, as well as traveling on the secret tube that used to ferry posts beneath the streets of London.

The Devonshire is a classic London pub.

What culinary experiences do you recommend in London?

Every city has great restaurants, however, if you want a taste of London, head to Bermondsey for some street food in Maltby Street Market , or try the fresh seafood from Electric Avenue, Brixton. You can’t go wrong with a trip to The Devonshire in Soho for great food in an authentic old pub atmosphere — quintessential London.

What’s one dish everyone should try in London?

Sausage roll.

What’s your favorite London pub and what should we order?

The Holly Bush in Hampstead Village, and you should order the Sunday roast — the lamb is delicious, and it has authentic Yorkshire puddings.

Where do you go to relax in London?

Anywhere in North London — Muswell Hill, Hampstead, Highgate, so many lovely neighborhood pubs and restaurants and so dog-friendly.

What’s the best way to experience London’s rich culture?

Just walk around. It’s one of the best cities for walking and seeing things you may not have noticed before. There are some really fun walking tours, ghost walks, history tours, etcetera. Or wander along the river — so much of London is free.

The City of London itself is very cool, steeped in history and home to some of the world’s top cocktail bars hidden down side streets. Spitalfields Market , Shoreditch and Hoxton are all great areas to experience London’s diverse culture.

Where’s the best place to enjoy London’s art scene?

On the streets. Street art is phenomenal in London, like Brick Lane and Waterloo tunnels, to name but a few.

Where can you find the hottest nightlife in London?

Wherever there’s a queue outside a club!

London is filled with cultural attractions and famous landmarks.

What adventures would you recommend in London?

I love a boat ride along the Thames in either direction — to Kew Gardens and Hampton Court , or to Canary Wharf and the Thames Barrier. It’s great to be able to hop on and off to explore and see the city from the river perspective.

And there’s always London’s fantastic tube and bus network to navigate the city and create your own adventures.

What are the best souvenirs to bring home from London?

Something that will always bring a smile and a memory. There’s an array of art, fashion and design that sums up London style.

Where’s the best place to go shopping in London?

There is such a broad choice for shopping — from thrifting for vintage and pre-loved in Shoreditch to designer labels and boutiques in Bond Street. There is something for everyone, some of the well-established markets are also a great place to bag a unique find.

What are the hottest neighborhoods in London?

Close to Pan Pacific London are the very popular Hoxton and Shoreditch neighborhoods, which offer a great introduction to East London.

Where can you find the best views in the city?

There are various viewing platforms, including the Shard and the recently opened Horizon 22 at 22 Bishopsgate, which offer spectacular views. For the walkers, there are rewarding views from Primrose Hill and Parliament Hill.

What are London’s best green spaces?

According to the United Nations, London has over eight million trees, making it the world’s largest urban forest.

Every park and green space offers a different perspective and history. As a North Londoner, my favorite is Hampstead Heath. Just four miles out of central London, its 800 acres of wild park and woodland boasts some of the most spectacular views of the city. There are swimming ponds, walking trails and Kenwood House, which has been featured in many period dramas. Londoners come to walk their dogs, picnic or fly a kite with their children. Famously, it’s the place that inspired C.S. Lewis to write The Chronicles of Narnia .

Horizon 22 offers some of the city’s most incredible views.

Share an insider tip about your city.

Climb 257 steps within the great dome of St Paul’s Cathedral and you will find yourself in The Whispering Gallery. This sits 98 feet above the nave of the church and is a circular walkway that hugs the base of the dome structure. If you whisper anywhere along the curved wall, someone standing on the other side of the room will be able to hear you because of a quirk with the acoustics.

What’s your go-to room service order?

Chicken noodle soup — ultimate soul food.

What’s your favorite hotel amenity?

It’s our Singa lion cub [mascot] for our younger visitors. We have a wonderful seamstress who makes new outfits for all occasions, so there’s always the opportunity to update Singa’s wardrobe on return visits.

When you’re traveling, what are a few essentials that are always in your luggage?

Definitely my hair straighteners.

What’s an overrated hospitality fad?

The club sandwich. It’s so hard to eat. Champagne as an amenity is overdone and not to everyone’s taste. Hospitality excellence is personalizing the guest’s experience, so amenities tailored to the individual show more care and creativity in my humble opinion.

Eurostar could drop popular London route next year – despite only launching six years ago

  • Kara Godfrey , Deputy Travel Editor
  • Published : 10:24, 25 Sep 2024
  • Updated : 12:50, 25 Sep 2024
  • Published : Invalid Date,

EUROSTAR could ditch one of the most popular train routes from London next year.

Ongoing maintenance works could see the direct London to Amsterdam route scrapped for the entirety of 2025.

Eurostar could scrap the London-Amsterdam route for all of 2025

The direct route has already been suspended since June 15, due to renovations at Amsterdam's main train station.

Instead, Brits have to travel to Brussels and change there, taking an extra hour.

But plans to restart the direct train in early 2025 may not be possible.

Eurostar CEO Gwendoline Cazenave warned that all trains running to Amsterdam may be scrapped entirely next year.

Eurostar passengers face longer train journeys this summer - here’s why

This is because it has not yet been confirmed that the international terminal at Amsterdam Centraal station will reopen in time.

She told local Dutch media Het Financieele Dagblad: "We are concerned there are no guarantees or clear commitments about the readiness of the surrounding infrastructure to reconnect Amsterdam and London.”

"Without clarity on behalf of the Dutch railway network [...] Eurostar will be forced to suspend services between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, on the one hand, and London and Paris, on the other, during the course of 2025.

“This will not be Eurostar leaving the Netherlands, this would be Eurostar being pushed out from the Netherlands.”

She added that the deterioration of the train lines has resulted in "reliability problems, capacity restrictions and particularly inconvenient delays for passengers".

Trains on the high speed lines have also reduced its top speed since 2023, going down from 99mph to 50mph.

Despite this, Cazenave said they still hoped to restart the services next year, if they can get the go-ahead.

The London-Amsterdam route launched back in 2018.

This follows Eurostar's first ever London route back in 1994, running from Waterloo station to Paris and Brussels.

This later changed to London St Pancras in 2007.

A second UK train service was added at Ashford International back in 1996, although this was scrapped during Covid and is unlikely to return.

The UK to Disneyland direct service - which launched in 1996 - has also been scrapped, with Brits now having to change at Lille or Paris.

Despite this, Cazenave revealed Eurostar's future plans for new European routes, as well as additional trains being added to the fleet.

But other train operators have revealed they could soon enter the market with UK routes.

Sun Travel's favourite train journeys in the world

sun travel london

Sun Travel's journalists have taken their fare share of train journeys on their travels and here they share their most memorable rail experiences.

Davos to Geneva, Switzerland

"After a ski holiday in Davos, I took the scenic train back to Geneva Airport. The snow-covered mountains and tiny alpine villages that we passed were so beautiful that it felt like a moving picture was playing beyond the glass." - Caroline McGuire

Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen

"Nothing quite beats the Shinkansen bullet train, one of the fastest in the world. It hardly feels like you're whizzing along at speed until you look outside and see the trees a green blur. Make sure to book seat D or E too - as you'll have the best view of Mount Fuji along the way." Kara Godfrey

London to Paris by Eurostar

"Those who have never travelled on the Eurostar may wonder what’s so special about a seemingly ordinary train that takes you across the channel. You won’t have to waste a moment and can tick off all the top attractions from the Louvre to the Champs-Élysées which are both less than five kilometres from the Gare du Nord." - Sophie Swietochowski

Glasgow to Fort William by Scotrail

"From mountain landscapes and serene lochs to the wistful moors, I spent my three-hour journey from Glasgow to Fort William gazing out the window. Sit on the left-hand side of the train for the best views overlooking Loch Lomond." - Hope Brotherton

Beijing to Ulaanbatar

"The Trans-Mongolian Express is truly a train journey like no other. It starts amid the chaos of central Beijing before the city's high-rises give way to crumbling ancient villages and eventually the vast vacant plains of Mongolia, via the Gobi desert. The deep orange sunset seen in the middle of the desert is among the best I've witnessed anywhere." - Ryan Gray

Virgin Trains could launch  between the UK and Europe.

And start-up  Evolyn  has revealed plans to launch train services between London to Paris.

Other routes that have been scrapped are from Ashford International and Disneyland Paris

The London Road restaurants and cafes you need to visit

London Road is a melting pot of different cultures and nationalities, and that's reflected in the restaurants, cafes and shops on offer in the area

There's nowhere in Liverpool quite like London Road. It's a melting pot of different cultures and nationalities, a fact which is reflected in the restaurants, cafes and shops on offer in the area.

Last year, the ECHO reported on how London Road 'was left without its biggest draw' following the closure of TJ Hughes . But I'd argue that, while the street has changed, it's as exciting as ever - certainly from a food and drink perspective.

Take Taza supermarket for instance, which specialises in Turkish, Asian, Middle Eastern and Eastern European food, as well as Halal meat, this international food store truly sells everything - and at bargain prices. The shop bakes fresh bread, pastries, and cakes perfect for any occasion - I've used them for two birthdays this month.

Its butcher offers top-quality meats, and there's a vast selection of colourful fruits and vegetables to choose from - not to mention every spice you can possibly think of. During my visit with friends yesterday, I picked up a freshly baked cheese borek, a type of pastry found in the Balkans, Turkey, Armenia, the Levant, Northern Africa and Central Asia. The pastry surrounding the soft feta cheese was flaky and crisp - a significant step up from a Greggs cheese and onion bake in my opinion.

Flaky pastry lovers, take note: Kurdish cafe Bekas might just be your new go-to for baklava. Our recent visit saw us indulging in four pieces of the flaky Turkish delight, paired impeccably with aromatic Arabic coffee that had just a hint of cardamom, and both presented with elegance. The baklava hit the perfect note of sweetness and texture.

Bekas is truly a social hub, frequented by everyone from students to neighbourhood locals, all finding comfort in a cuppa alongside their Kurdish breakfast spreads. A stone's throw away, Happy Brother Canteen buzzes with energy; this small and lively Chinese restaurant is a lunchtime hotspot, particularly loved by members of the city's Chinese community.

Non-native speakers, be forewarned: you'll be navigating menus in Chinese. We threw caution to the wind and chose our dishes on a whim. Presenting our selection to the waitress prompted a surprising query: "Are you sure you can eat that? " We confidently affirmed, still unaware of what we had ordered.

To our astonishment, the mystery dish revealed itself as duck wings accompanied by its heart and tongue - a far cry from your usual British Chinese takeaway offerings. Cooked in an exquisite sweet-salty sauce, they were a treat. Our other choice appealed to a more universal palate, featuring char siu pork, roasted duck, Chinese sausage, and chicken wings, all expertly spiced and cooked to perfection, served with a generous bowl of sticky rice for good measure.

Our next stop was Pshdar Kurdish Restaurant, another London Road favourite - this time for the Kurdish community - where I had one of the best kebabs I've ever tasted. The Kurdish kebab was spicy, juicy and perfectly charred from the grill. It came with fresh naan bread, salad and yoghurt, and you have the option to pair it with chips or rice - or simply enjoy it on its own. The sides of grilled halloumi and cheese pastries were fresh and satisfying - plus, they serve you complimentary soup as soon as you take a seat.

We ended our journey at Infinity Lounge, a chilled-out spot with fantastic Arabic tea. Even our non-smoker friend found it enjoyable.
