Tom Cruise's Colorado Mountain Estate Sells for $39.5 Million

The 320-acre Telluride ranch is where the actor vacationed with his children and ex-wife Katie Holmes.

According to TopTenRealEstateDeals.com , Tom Cruise's Colorado vacation home—where he enjoyed his free time with his children and ex-wife Katie Holmes—hit the market for $39.5 million in March 2021. Just two months later, and the home has sold for the asking price. The 320-acre ranch, located in Telluride, CO—an area known for world-class alpine skiing (and its fair share of celebrity residents)—is an ultra-private rustic dream surrounded by miles of natural beauty. Fans of Cruise may be acquainted with the retreat, as it was the location of a follow-up interview with Oprah Winfrey (that came shortly after his dramatic 2005 appearance on her show), but the property itself has much more to offer than what was revealed during their sit-down.

Protected by a gated entrance, once through you’ll ascend up a mile-long driveway, which leads to the 10,000-square-foot cedar-and-stone main house and three-bedroom guest lodge. Sweeping mountain views surround the property, which has easy access to forested trails and is near the historic downtown area. The home was sold by Eric Lavey and Dan Dockray of LIV Sotheby's International Realty. “If you spend any amount of time in this unique estate, you recognize that it is truly a once-a-generation type of offering—which makes it a bit impossible to let that opportunity pass you by,” says Lavey, the the lead agent on the listing. Let’s Take a Peek Inside Tom Cruise’s Property Portfolio

At long last, “Top Gun: Maverick” is set to land in theaters at the end of May. A-lister Tom Cruise will step back into the cockpit and reprise his role as test pilot Maverick.

Now 59, the seemingly ageless performer has been box-office gold since the 1980s. His hits include “Cocktail,” “Jerry McGuire,” and “A Few Good Men.” The father of three also starred in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, the latest of which is the upcoming “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.”

With the superstar set to take off on the big screen, we thought we’d take a spin through the actor’s real estate.

Along with starring in blockbusters over the decades, the “Mission: Impossible” star has been busy when it comes to pricey real estate. In many cases, the paparazzi-averse Cruise tends to buy up multiple lots in extremely private locales.

So don your aviators, and let’s head into the “property zone.”

Clearwater condos

The star’s latest “mission”: a move to a giant spread in Clearwater, FL . He dropped $9,580,500 on a 20,826-square-foot, two-level penthouse in 2017. It’s located in the Skyview tower , which was reportedly altered to accommodate Cruise, according to the Tampa Bay Times .

The actor’s lavish living quarters include four bedrooms, a gym, game room, home theater, roof deck with an infinity pool, hot tub, gardens, and a bar, according to the Times.

The penthouse boasts a private garage with a car elevator on the second floor. That level also apparently includes a flight simulator. (Perhaps Cruise could get in some practice for his “Top Gun” role?) There’s also office space and a sports storage area.

Cruise paid an additional $1,475,000 for three more condos in the Clearwater high-rise, perhaps for staff or relatives.

The building, developed by fellow Scientologist Moises Agami , is located just blocks from the Church of Scientology headquarters. Cruise has been a member of the church since 1986.

Terrific in Telluride

More recently, the “Risky Business” actor took care of a piece of business in the Rocky Mountain region. He sold his longtime Telluride, CO, ranch for a whopping $39.5 million.

Cruise had held on to the 320-acre mountain retreat for decades, before trying to quietly sell it for $59 million in 2014. It was relisted in March 2021 for $39.5 million and quickly sold.

Cruise spent years amassing the land, then built a 10,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom home in 1994.

The picturesque home was the setting for a photo shoot with Vanity Fair magazine featuring his daughter Suri  with his then-wife Katie Holmes . Oprah Winfrey also interviewed Cruise at the home in 2008.

The main house includes a chef’s kitchen, fitness center, rec room, den, office suite, two fireplaces, and multiple terraces. There’s also a three-bedroom guest lodge.

Though secluded, the retreat is just minutes to Telluride and a two-hour private jet flight from L.A.

Lavish in Los Angeles

Before decamping to the Sunshine State, the busy actor let go of his holdings in La-La land.

In 2016, Cruise sold the Beverly Hills compound he had shared with  Holmes . The 1.2-acre spread changed hands for a startling $38 million. He had paid $30.5 million in 2007.

The compound included a 10,000-square-foot mansion with seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms, a tennis court, a swimming pool, and a pair of guesthouses.

That sale came almost a year after he sold his Hollywood Hills compound to  Eva Longoria for $11.4 million.

Initially listed for $13 million, that property featured two adjoining houses built in 2005 on an ultraprivate 2.75-acre lot. The compound consists of a three-bedroom French villa, a four-bedroom guesthouse, two standalone studios, and a quaint stone cottage.

Cruise and Holmes leased a mansion in the 90210 for $55,000 a month from 2001 through 2008.

Last offered for lease for $100,000 a month in 2016, the three-acre estate includes a nine-bedroom main house, a guesthouse, a pool with a spa, and a tennis court.

Crash pad in New York City

Cruise sold his longtime East Village loft in the American Felt Building for $3 million in 2013. He had picked up the pied-à-terre in 1984, following his starring role in “Risky Business.”

The two-bedroom, 2,200-square-foot unit is said to contain a state-of-the-art gym. It’s located on the 10th floor of the 12-floor building.

Cruise reportedly shared the condo with all three of his ex-wives, including Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman . The building housed other notable residents, including author Bret Easton Ellis and the Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti , the Real Deal reported at the time of the sale. Cruise’s loft was sold in an off-market deal.

Inside Katie Holmes' $4 Million California Home

Katie Holmes $4 million house in Calabasas

Katie Holmes, the millionaire movie star and once-upon-a-time wife of Tom Cruise, sold her chic contemporary mansion in Calabasas, California, for $4.011 million in February 2020.

The sale came a month after reducing the original price of $4.625 million to $4.25 million. Holmes decided to part ways with the Calabasas home after her split with Jamie Foxx.

Take a look inside this six-bedroom, six-and-a-half bathroom house that is situated in the Oaks.

Holmes bought this house in August 2014, about two years after she filed for divorce from Cruise in 2012. She was living in New York City at the time.

Various media reports said that Holmes feared that the Church of Scientology was following her and was concerned about the church’s potential influence on her daughter.

According to a New York Post article in July 2012, "[a] team of beefy armed men parked themselves in a white Cadillac Escalade outside Holmes' place [in NYC] all day yesterday, snapping pictures of people outside the building and demanding to know who they were."

Holmes had been renting a $12,500-a-month apartment in Manhattan after leaving Cruise.

Things may or may not have been as bad as the media reported, and we’ll never know for sure. It took Holmes two years to move from New York City to Calabasas, although she kept a residence in the Big Apple, too.

"That time was intense. It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it," Holmes told InStyle in April 2020. "We had some funny moments out and about in public. So many people I didn't know became my friends and helped us out, and that's what I love about [New York City]."

Rare Opportunities

Holmes is now directing movies as well as acting. Her first film, "All We Had," debuted in 2016. It was an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Annie Weatherwax.

Her upcoming film, "Rare Objects," is also a book adaptation. She's turning the book by Kathleen Tessaro into a screenplay and will direct the movie, which is a historical drama set during the Great Depression.

For all the negative press that Cruise receives for being a Scientologist, the divorce between Holmes and Cruise seemed amicable.

The two were divorced less than two weeks after the announcement was made public, and Holmes received full custody of Siri.

Life Is Getting Easier

Holmes' life appears less chaotic now, too.

The media frenzy also has died off, which means fewer bogus reports. Like when Star magazine published an article in 2011 titled "Addiction Nightmare: Katie Drug Shocker!" and implied she was a drug user.

She sued them for $50 million, and two months later, the publication publicly apologized and made a contribution to a nonprofit charity on Holmes' behalf.

Is Holmes Saying Goodbye to California?

It's unclear if Holmes bought another pad in California or if she's sticking with New York City, but that appears to be the case.

Settling In New York City

During her interview with InStyle, Holmes discussed how she was very active in the New York City community.

She has a book club and goes to the Joyce Theater, does hot yoga and takes boxing classes.

If she does buy another place in California, it might be a vacation home.

A New Adventure

Katie Holmes in New York City

Holmes, 41, is entering a new part of her life, but she doesn't regret anything.

"I always wanted adventure, and I got it," Holmes told inStyle. "And I'm still on one. In life, you're supposed to have joy, pain, loss, calm. We're not supposed to say, 'If I could go back, I would want everything joyful,' because it's not going to happen. That's life. Nobody gets off free, and you're not supposed to. Because then you're going to miss things."

The Real Truth About Tom Cruise And Katie Holmes' Break-Up

Tom Cruise smiling

There's no end to news about Tom Cruise. Some of it's great, like the fact that "Top Gun: Maverick" was his first movie to gross over $100 million on its opening weekend . Nicely done. And some of the news is a little more exciting and sometimes bizarre. Some of the more disturbing things about Cruise's life have to do with his involvement in the Church of Scientology. He's also not a bit shy to take on studio executives if he feels he has a better way of doing things. For example, when Paramount proposed a release plan for "Maverick" that would bring it to a streaming platform after only 45 days in theaters, Cruise allegedly showed up with a lawyer and insisted on a three-month theater showing.

On a more badass level, Cruise can freak out his family and friends with his insistence on doing his own stunts , some of which are outright dangerous. In 2021, when Cruise was filming "Mission: Impossible 8," fans got footage of him strapped to a 1941 Boeing B75N1 Stearman biplane, The Sun reports, and the plane flipped and nosedived while Cruise was on the wing. Clearly, there are no stuntmen required for these projects!

But perhaps most exciting of all is Cruise's relationship history and, as far as we know, no stuntmen were hired for these gigs either. He's certainly made an impression because all of his exes had things to say about time spent dating him. But of all of these exes, Katie Holmes might have the most to say.

The strange selection process for Tom Cruise's girlfriends

Tom Cruise laughing

Before Katie Holmes came onto the scene, Tom Cruise had an unusual way of finding love. As Maureen Orth reported for Vanity Fair in 2012, the Church of Scientology had a way of vetting women to fill the role of Cruise's girlfriend. Apparently, Cruise's adherence to the church was a source of tension in two of his previous relationships with Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman. "There were allegations and counter-allegations about fidelity, but the central problem was Nicole did not want to deal with Scientology," a source told Vanity Fair.

Allegedly, A-listers like Sofia Vergara had been scouted but turned down the offer. Brendan Tighe, a former Scientologist, said on " Megyn Kelly Today " that Scarlet Johansson had apparently tried out for the role, a comment that garnered a response from the actor herself.

"The very idea of any person auditioning to be in a relationship is so demeaning," Johansson said in a statement, per a later publication by Vanity Fair . "I refuse for anyone to spread the idea that I lack the integrity to choose my own relationships. Only a man, a.k.a. Brendan Tighe, would come up with a crazy story like that." Orth reported on the experience of actor and activist Nazanin Boniadi as she was scouted and molded by Scientology, which included the encumbrances of being constantly accompanied by handlers. Boniadi was also never allowed to criticize the church. It didn't last, but it sure gave a heads up for what Katie Holmes was in for.

How an article for Seventeen changed everything

Katie Holmes smiling

Of all things, it was an interview that set things in motion between Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. In 2004, Holmes was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, after playing Joey Potter on "Dawson's Creek" and engaged to actor Chris Klein, per HuffPost . She was interviewed by Deb Baer for "Seventeen" magazine and was, naturally, being asked about upcoming wedding plans. Holmes quite innocently said, "I think every little girl dreams about (her wedding). I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise," (via The Hollywood Reporter ).

The behind-the-scenes workings of the Church of Scientology are unknown, but sure enough, six months after the article hit the press, Holmes and Klein broke off their engagement. Shortly after, Homes was introduced to Cruise on the pretext that there might be a part for her in "Mission: Impossible 3." However it happened, Holmes' admission of her childhood crush on that fateful day set the wheels in motion.

Baer later lamented her interview with Holmes in an op-ed for HuffPost, where she admitted that Holmes struck her as overly trusting and far too idealistic to see a relationship with Cruise for what it really was. "She was ridiculously easy prey," Baer wrote, noting that Holmes was young enough that she was still easily "starstruck" and lonely. "Once Katie was firmly in Tom's clutches, sometimes I'd lay awake at night, tossing and turning realizing that the quote I'd gotten from her at the first interview probably ruined the poor girl's life," Baer ominously wrote.

The couch-jumping episode

Oprah Winfrey and Tom Cruise at an event, smiling

It's not every relationship that gets a defining moment that involves Oprah Winfrey. Maybe Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are one of the few other couples who can compete with such an illustrious milestone. For Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, it came via the infamous couch episode. It was in 2005 and Cruise was wild in the interview, throwing around power poses, fit pumps, and athletic arm swings. "Something happened to you, something happened to you," Winfrey repeated. "I'm in love," Cruise told the audience with a radiant smile, followed by the actor taking a knee and giving another low fist pump.

"We've never seen you behave this way before," Winfrey said. It was after this comment that Cruise jumped on the couch. Hey, we've always known he's done his own stunts. It was as erratic and enthusiastic as anyone could imagine but Winfrey, being the pro she is, took it in stride. Cruise then ran backstage to get Holmes, who was 26 at the time, and brought her out in front of the audience. She continued to hug Cruise and looked charmingly shy.

Cruise was supposed to be promoting his 2005 film "War of the Worlds," directed by Stephen Spielberg and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Needless to say, the production company wasn't overly pleased,  The New York Times noted, when any talk of the upcoming film was completely derailed by Cruise's antics. No one remembered a movie after that.

Suri Cruise was born in silence

Tom Cruise holding Suri, taking her out of car

Tom Cruise didn't get down on one knee when he proposed to Katie Holmes in Paris in June 2005. The two dined at one of the restaurants in the Eiffel Tower, The Hollywood Reporter notes, and it was here that Cruise asked her. While Holmes didn't get a traditional, kneeling proposal, she did get a five-carat yellow diamond ring by famed jeweler Fred Leighton.

In October 2005, the couple broke the news that they were expecting a baby. In an interview with Barbara Walters for her special "The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2005," he admitted that he made a big, baby-related purchase. "I bought a sonogram machine," Cruise said, (via People). "I am gonna donate it to a hospital when we are done," he added, admitting that he was going to perform the sonograms himself. The news was worrying to many doctors, a later article by NBC News noted, stating that such procedures should be performed by a trained professional.

Thankfully, everything went off without a hitch and daughter Suri was born on April 18, 2006 in Santa Monica, California. But there was one unusual detail. Holmes had to deliver Suri in silence. The unusual requirement hailed from Cruise's belief in Scientology, where founder L. Ron Hubbard stated that words and sounds created by pain were harmful to both the mother and the baby, Today notes. We wonder what Holmes thought of this belief.

Katie's parents were upset about the relationship

Katie Holmes and her parents at an event, smiling

While Tom Cruise was jumping on Oprah Winfrey's couch, Katie Holmes' parents were allegedly a lot more skeptical about the budding relationship. When it came to Holmes and Cruise's 2006 wedding at the Odescalchi Castle in Italy, the Mirror notes, it was rumored that her parents were going to skip the wedding because they were so disappointed in the pending nuptials. They may have been worried about Cruise himself but they were also upset about Holmes' religious shift. She had been Catholic but dipped into the waters of Scientology, since it was a must in becoming Cruise's leading lady. As Catholics, they felt they could not attend a Scientology wedding.

Her father, lawyer Marty Holmes, wasn't one to have his leadership contested. "Marty is very rigid — it's his way or the highway," an insider told People . However, whatever differences her parents felt, they put it aside, at least for her rehearsal dinner. "It didn't take much time before I realized this Tom guy was a special guy — that he loved Katie, that he cared for her and supported her," Holmes' father said in a speech, per People. "Tom expressed his love many different ways — I like that. I respect men who are not afraid to show their feelings. I respect Tom for the commitment he has made to provide happiness and love to Katie." While they might not have loved her choice in partner, they at least stood by their daughter for part of the ostentatious events.

Why there were red flags at their wedding

Tom Cruise looking at Katie Holmes

Despite the fact that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes had a $3.5 million dollar wedding at the Odescalchi Castle in Lazio, Italy, there were some unusual moments about their big day. With all of the guests assembled and Cruise waiting at the front, Holmes kept everyone waiting for an uncomfortably long time. Leah Rimini, a Scientologist at the time, later wrote in her book "Troublemaker," that Cruise stood there smiling "for the next twenty minutes (but what seemed like an eternity)." Rimini also wrote that Holmes and Cruise asked her to invite Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony to the wedding, since Rimini was friends with them, per Vulture .

The wedding was, unsurprisingly, a ceremony of Scientology and, as the Mirror reports, some of the vows were a little unusual. "Girls need clothes and food, tender happiness and frills, a pan, a comb, a cat," Cruise allegedly said to Holmes as part of his vows in a way of promising to provide for her during their marriage.

Besides some of the more unusual moments, the wedding was also lavish and magical. Giorgio Armani designed both of Holmes' dresses for the day, as well as Suri's dress, per People . When asked who was responsible for the whimsy of the evening, a guest said, "It was all Katie. It was the wedding every little girl dreams of." It definitely sounds like it was unreal. "It was so beyond what your mind could compute," Remini said.

People noticed that Katie started acting robotic

While Katie Holmes looked blissed out at her wedding, people started to notice a change in her during her marriage to Tom Cruise. No doubt, the stringent requirements of a life in Scientology meant that Holmes was constantly monitored. As Maureen Orth reported for Vanity Fair , Cruise and Holmes were always surrounded by handlers, even in their own home. On top of that, Holmes had to re-start her own life so it would fit in Cruise's world. "Holmes disappeared for a couple weeks after she and Cruise met, and she distanced herself from old friends," Orth wrote. Orth also noted that in 2010, she sat with Holmes and Cruise at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, where the couple was bombarded by fans throughout the entire meal. "My goodness," Orth addressed Holmes, "if this is what you go through here, what must it be like when you go outside?" Holmes replied, "Oh, we don't go outside very much."

Deb Baer, who interviewed Holmes for that famous "Seventeen" article that started it all later wrote of what she observed in Holmes throughout her marriage to Cruise. "I'd see her on Letterman or Leno, robotically calling Tom amazing for the 400th time and think, that is NOT the down-to-earth girl I met," Baer wrote for the HuffPost .

Jenna Miscavige Hill, daughter to Scientology powerhouse David Miscavige, later wrote in support of Holmes by sharing her own experience, per The Hollywood Reporter . "My experience in growing up in Scientology is that it is both mentally and at times physically abusive," she wrote.

Tom Cruise didn't see their divorce coming

Tom Cruise looking away

On June 29, 2012, Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise after five years of marriage, a move that allegedly blindsided Cruise, according to The Hollywood Reporter . "I didn't expect it," Cruise admitted to the German network ProSieben (via CBS News ). "Life is a tragicomedy. You need to have a sense of humor," he added. News of the divorce landed right before Cruise's 50th birthday. "To be 50 and to have experiences and to think, you have a grip on everything, and then it hits you: This is it, what life can do to you," Cruise added.

Despite Cruise's brave attitude, TMZ reported that both Cruise and Holmes were seen wearing their wedding rings after the divorce filing. Allegedly, Cruise's two children, whom he adopted with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, Connor Cruise and Isabella Cruise, stayed close by his side during the experience. "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out," a rep for Cruise stated.

Meanwhile, Holmes' attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, released a statement as well, according to People . "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Wolfe said. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest." Despite the big changes to come to both of their lives, reports aired that Holmes was photographed in New York looking happy and relieved.

Why Scientology factored into their split

Katie Holmes carrying Suri outside

After the news broke about Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's divorce, Cruise admitted that a major reason for their divorce was Scientology. Radar  got access to Cruise's deposition, which was eye opening when it came to the actor's religion and the impact it had. Lawyers asked Cruise if Holmes left in order to protect their daughter, Suri, from Scientology. "Listen, I find that question offensive," Cruise heatedly responded. "I find it, those statements offensive. Like with any relationship, there are many different levels to it. You know, I, I find it very offensive. There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion."

Cruise relinquished a little during the deposition. A lawyer asked him, "And Ms. Holmes has never indicated in any way that was one of the reasons she left you? ...To protect Suri from Scientology?" Cruise replied, "Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes." When asked if Suri was currently practicing Scientology, Cruise said that she wasn't.

Jenna Miscavige Hill, a former Scientologist, told The Hollywood Reporter that she understood Holmes' decision to protect Suri. "As a mother myself, I offer my support to Katie and wish for her all the strength she will need to do what is best for her and her daughter," Miscavige Hill said in a statement. Holmes asked for sole custody of their daughter, so clearly she wanted to make sure that she was in charge of parenting.

Finances after their divorce

It was very advantageous for Katie Holmes that her father, Marty Holmes, was a lawyer and one who really went to bat for his daughter when she divorced Tom Cruise. Marty, of course, wasn't the only lawyer on Holmes' side, but he was a key one. In fact, he had brought his legal talent to his daughter's aid even before her wedding. He had negotiated her prenup with Cruise, a document that "reportedly filled five bankers' boxes," Vanity Fair notes. It was shrewd planning on his part. "Because of it, when Katie Holmes made her bombshell announcement late last June that she was divorcing Tom Cruise, the case was able to be resolved in a mere 11 days," the outlet noted.

Interestingly though, Holmes didn't make out with as much money as one might have expected, considering Cruise's net worth of $600 million, per Celebrity Net Worth . Cruise only gave Homes $400,000 a year for child support, which will end when Suri turns 18, according to TMZ , totaling $4.8 million. Cruise was also made responsible for any other expenses, including medical costs, related to Suri.

There was considerable speculation as to why Holmes settled for so little. As CafeMom hypothesized, Holmes was able to maintain more autonomy in how she chose to raise Suri, including schools, because it would give Cruise less control over. Had Holmes gotten more money from Cruise, he would have had more say, which might have included an education in Scientology for Suri.

How Katie started to thrive after her divorce

Katie Holmes smiling

There was something remarkable about watching Katie Holmes after her divorce from Tom Cruise. She moved to New York City with her daughter, Suri, and friends told InStyle that Holmes was a resurrected woman, up for all that the city had to offer and eager for new adventures. "I feel like I can be more creative and have more time, have my voice," Holmes told InStyle. "It's sort of, like, just put your stuff out there and be yourself. It takes a while to be comfortable, though." Holmes admitted that she's never felt so creative and so peaceful at the same time. "You can get consumed by what people think, but suddenly you just decide to do things on your own terms," Holmes added. "I feel like I'm finally figuring that out. I'm getting the projects I want made and just relaxing a little."

Holmes found love again too with actor Jamie Foxx. The only problem was that Holmes had, as Radar  reported, signed an agreement in her divorce settlement that she wouldn't date anyone publicly for five years after her split from Cruise. On top of that, Holmes was forbidden to introduce any new love interests to Suri. Foxx and Holmes began dating in 2013 but ended up splitting after six years, People notes. However, the relationship was an emotional breakthrough for Holmes. "I don't have any fear now, I don't have a lot of rules for myself, and I don't take myself that seriously," she told People in 2014.

Tom Cruise's relationship with his children today

Connor and Tom Cruise at a sports event, seated

Tom Cruise shares two children with ex Nicole Kidman. The couple adopted Connor and Isabella Cruise, whom he remains connected to still. Isabella, who goes by Bella, is an artist and social media shy, though she does have an Instagram account where she showcases her art. Bella is still a member of Scientology and married Max Parker in London, according to the Daily Mail . Neither Cruise nor Kidman attended her wedding, which naturally led to speculation that her relationship had frayed with her parents. But she later cleared the air. "Of course [we talk], they're my parents," Bella told the Daily Mail. "Anyone who says otherwise is full of s**t."

Conner, who was born in 1995, has a few film credits under his belt and works as a DJ but, like his sister, he's media shy and rarely posts photos with his parents. However, in 2019, Conner and Cruise were photographed together in London, according to People , where they bonded over a private helicopter. Cruise learned how to fly choppers for "Mission: Impossible" because... of course he did.

As far as Cruise's relationship goes with daughter Suri, whom he shares with Katie Holmes, there's less evidence of a bond. In fact, as Hollywood Life notes, Cruise and Suri haven't been photographed together since 2012. "As challenging as things have become for him and his daughter, he still loves her," a source told the outlet in 2019 and added that Cruise hopes to rekindle the relationship.

Who else they've dated since their divorce

Katie Holmes and Bobby Wooten III smiling together

Tom Cruise started dating British actor Hayley Atwell in 2020 when they met on the set of "Mission: Impossible 7," where they filmed together in London and Rome. An insider on production told The Sun that they were a great pair. "Tom and Hayley hit it off from day one," the source said. "They've been meeting up after hours, and she's been to his London pad. They get on brilliantly, and both seem very happy." Atwell was even at the premiere for Cruise's next film, "Top Gun: Maverick."

However, things got rocky between the two and they split once, reconciled, got back together, and split again. In June 2022, they had called it quits, a later publication by The Sun reports. There was no evidence that Scientology was a factor in their breakup.

Meanwhile, Katie Holmes found love after Jamie Foxx with chef Emilio Vitolo but after eight months, they split in May 2021, per Us Weekly . Holmes then began dating musician Bobby Wooten III, who is ten years her junior, Page Six notes. They seem to have quite the New York romance and have been photographed smooching in Central Park and walked the red carpet at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2022 for Holme's film "Alone Together." Their relationship continues to be a delightful hit and Holmes looks happy. She's come a long way since that Seventeen article.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes just bought a new “house” located at 42 West 12th Street in Greenwich Village in New York City. The home sold for $15 million and has 8,100 square feet. Here’s a floor plan for the new digs:

Perty sweet! I’m not from New York City so I don’t know a lot about real estate in the Big Apple, but it seems odd to me that Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s neighbor has window unit air conditioners. Is that normal? I guess retro-fitting those old buildings with central air would be mighty tricky and expensive.

Here are some more photos of the address from Google Maps Street View . Click a thumbnail to see larger images in the gallery:

It looks like both neighbors have window air conditioners. Go ahead New Yorkers, make fun of me! Also, it looks like the Cruise’s neighbor on the right is having some renovations done! Maybe Tom bought the fancy pad to assuage his pain from his recent worst week ever!

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes's Relationship Timeline: A Look Back

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were married for nearly six years before they called it quits.

Has anyone ever been more in love than couch-jumping Tom Cruise and  Katie Holmes ? We'll wait. Beginning in 2005, the actress and  fashion icon  (not just anyone can  pull off socks over sweatpants , alright?) engaged in a whirlwind romance with PDA-filled red carpet appearances that solidified their public image as TomKat. Within a year of meeting, they were engaged and welcomed a child together. A few months later, they tied the knot (Holmes's first marriage and Cruise's third). While many believed that the union wouldn't last — and it ultimately didn't — the pair still went on to share nearly six years together as husband and wife.

Since their 2012 divorce, we're remembering the Hollywood couple that once gave every teenager a glimmer of hope that it was possible — although highly unlikely — that maybe, just maybe, the dream of marrying their celebrity crush could become a reality.

Here's a look back at Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's relationship.

April 2005: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes first meet and are spotted together

As the story goes, after Cruise divorced  Nicole Kidman  and subsequently  split from then-girlfriend Penelope Cruz , the  Mission: Impossible  actor's beloved Church of Scientology set out to find him a worthy (and malleable) wife. After reportedly courting (and ultimately scaring off) famous women like  Sofía Vergara  and  Scarlett Johansson , the task proved more difficult than expected.

Eventually, church officials' prayers were answered through a  Seventeen  article,  per HuffPost . In October 2004, Holmes (then  engaged to Chris Klein ) told the teen magazine, "I used to think that I was going to marry Tom Cruise."

Six months later, Klein and Holmes announced their breakup, and on April 27, 2005, Cruise and Holmes were first spotted together in Rome. TomKat made their red carpet debut as a couple two days later on April 29 at the David di Donatello Awards. Coincidence? We may never truly know.

"When I met Tom, I was completely in love, and, yes, I admired him growing up — he's Tom Cruise!" she reportedly told  T: The New York Times Style Magazine  ( via  People ).

May 23, 2005: Tom Cruise declares his love for Katie Holmes on The Oprah Winfrey Show

Cruise jolted daytime television when he appeared on  The Oprah Winfrey Show  and ecstatically jumped on her couch while professing love for his new girlfriend (who he subsequently brought out from backstage). The appearance went viral, with many questioning Cruise's sanity, as well as the relationship's authenticity.

Shortly after going public with their relationship, Cruise announced at a press conference for  War of the Worlds  that he and Holmes were engaged. According to  The Hollywood Reporter , Cruise, then 43, proposed to Holmes, then 26, with a five-carat yellow diamond ring at a restaurant atop the Eiffel Tower.

"Today is a magnificent day for me; I'm engaged to a magnificent woman," he said, per  People .

April 18, 2006: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes welcome their first child together

Holmes gave birth to a baby girl, Suri, in Santa Monica, California, in April 2006. Their newborn daughter made her public debut on the October 2006 cover of  Vanity Fair.

The  Dawson's Creek  alum  told the magazine , " The moment the doctor handed me Suri, I was just ready. The feeling is indescribable. All I can say is the moment I looked in her eyes, I felt like ... Mom."

Since then, the celeb offspring and fashionista has inspired one of our favorite pop culture artifacts of all time:  Suri's Burn Book .

In November 2006, the  Batman Begins  actress's schoolgirl fantasy of marrying Cruise came true. Their wedding was marked by an extravagant ceremony and reception at an Italian castle that cost more than $3 million, according to E! Online .

The star-studded guest list included couples  Jennifer Lopez  and Marc Anthony, John Travolta and the late Kelly Preston, and  David Beckham  and  Victoria Beckham , among others. As for the bridal party, Holmes had her sister Nancy Blaylock as maid of honor, while Cruise chose Scientology leader David Miscavige as his best man.

Interestingly, after Cruise gave a  Playboy  interview in which he praised Holmes, she filed for divorce. Although the  Top Gun  star admitted that he "didn't expect" the divorce —  per CBS News  — the legal proceedings ran smoothly, and a settlement was reached in just 11 days.

Cruise and Holmes have rarely spoken on the record in regard to their split, but it's rumored that Holmes's motivation was to free her daughter from the unique constraints of Scientology. During his deposition against Bauer Media Cruise (whose tabloids claimed he'd abandoned Suri), Cruise was asked if Holmes left him "in part to protect Suri from Scientology."

Insulted, he said, "There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion."

However,  according to ABC News , when prodded again, specifically as to whether Holmes had mentioned that she was leaving in an effort to protect Suri from Scientology, Cruise responded, "Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes."

Holmes was granted primary custody of Suri in their divorce. Though Cruise was afforded ample visitation, it was widely reported that he rarely saw his daughter. In 2016,  InTouch Weekly  asserted  that the actor hadn't seen or spoken to his youngest child in over 1,000 days (or two-and-a-half years).

Inside Tom Cruise's Relationship With Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes on the red carpet

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were Hollywood's golden couple in the '00s. Though the pair, who share and daughter, had a star-studded wedding in Italy, their inevitable separation is one of the most speculated about celebrity relationship splits in Tinseltown. And while they've not been married for nearly a decade, their relationship came with much drama and eye-catching headlines.

In fact,  Vanity Fair notes that when many people talk about Cruise and Holmes' relationship now, Scientology is often brought into the conversation in some capacity. Nine years after their divorce, the Daily Star writes that fans are still asking questions about what went wrong, what role the Church of Scientology played in their relationship, and what kind of relationship do Cruise and Holmes really have now amid co-parenting Suri.

In an April 2020 interview, Holmes told InStyle, "You can get consumed by what people think, but suddenly you just decide to do things on your own terms. I feel like I'm finally figuring that out. I'm getting the projects I want made and just relaxing a little. I've been around for a long time, and I'm still here! I can't believe it."

Insider outlines that following their split, a lot of focus went into how the couple could separate while also looking after their daughter and taking her needs into account. While they were only married for six years, Holmes and Cruise's relationship has gone down in celebrity history.

Tom and Katie's union was a whirlwind romance

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes on the red carpet

When you were growing up you had stars that you spent hours daydreaming you'd one day marry, right? Well, for Katie Holmes, that star was Tom Cruise, who is 17 years her senior. Reportedly, during a 2004 interview with Seventeen magazine, Holmes gushed, "I used to think that I was going to marry Tom Cruise."

The Daily Star reports that Cruise and Holmes didn't start dating until April 2005 following the end of his 11-year marriage to Nicole Kidman. However, after they started dating things started to move pretty quickly. Insider reports that just a couple of months after they'd started dating, Cruise gave an interview with Oprah Winfrey which has gone down in pop culture history as he jumped on the sofa and declared his love. Holmes also told W Magazine that she was converting to Scientology.

By June 2005, the couple announced their engagement, per The Hollywood Reporter . It's reported that he proposed at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. In October of the same year, they announced they were expecting their first child. In April 2006, Suri was born. In November of that year, the proud parents tied the knot in a star-studded ceremony in the 15th century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy. People reported the event included the 20-minute "double ring" Scientology ceremony and the traditional Scientology wedding pledge.

Tom never expected to get divorced

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes on the red carpet

During their six-year marriage, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes shared a lot of their lives in the press. In a 2010 interview with Marie Clare , Holmes spoke openly about her marriage. "It's an amazing life," the actress said, "but we always remind ourselves of how incredibly lucky we are." Holmes also revealed that the couple may have more children in the future.

So, when it was announced that Holmes had filed for divorce in 2012, it came as a shock to some fans. Cruise's publicist Amanda Lundberg told E! News, "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy." As many know, Tom shares two children with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

Around that time,  Vanity Fair  conducted an investigation into the involvement of the Church of Scientology in Cruise's love life. The outlet reported that there was almost an audition process for people to become Cruise's partner before he was with Holmes. After she filed for divorce, Goalcast writes that the Church of Scientology wanted to keep proceedings internal but that isn't what Holmes opted for.

According to the LA Times, Holmes hired three law firms in three states and made calls about the divorce on a disposable cellphone. Fans followed proceedings closely and People reported that the divorce was settled in just 11 days with Holmes getting primary custody of Suri.

What's Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' relationship like now?

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes on the red carpet

Following their separation, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise have kept their private lives just that – to themselves. According to  InStyle , there were rumors that part of the couple's divorce settlement included Holmes not dating publicly for five years following their separation, however, there are no reports to substantiate this claim.

Harper's Bazaar reports that Holmes dated Jamie Foxx for six years before they split in May 2019. In September 2020 the Daily Mail reports that she'd moved on with chef Emilio Vitolo Jr.

By December of that year, the Sun speculated that Cruise had started to date his "Mission Impossible" co-star Hayley Atwell after they were pictured together holding hands. This is one of the first times that the press has speculated about Cruise's love life since his separation from Holmes.

While Holmes and Cruise have rarely spoken about their separation since their divorce, Holmes told InStyle, "People say you don't really know yourself until you're 40. I'm 41. I have seen things. I have experienced things. I know what I'm talking about, and I know that my feelings and my insights are worthy. I'm going to listen to myself instead of deferring to someone else. That's a big step as a human. It takes time."

10 Years Later: All the Details From Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' Lavish Italian Wedding

The stars became husband and wife in an elaborate celebration at a castle in bracciano.

Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise Official Wedding Photo

"I think every little girl dreams about [her wedding]," Katie Holmes said in an interview with  Seventeen  in 2004. "I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise ."

"So let it be written, so let it be done."

As fate would have it, her childhood wishes came true less than a year later when, newly split from fiancé Chris Klein , she accepted the Oscar winner's marriage proposal, subsequently gave birth to the couple's only child, Suri , and went on to marry her girlhood crush in one of the most significant wedding ceremonies in Hollywood history.

As pop culture history goes, the marriage ended in a divorce settlement five and a half years later with primary legal custody of Suri granted to her mother.

Nevertheless, for nostalgia's sake, today marks a different milestone for those vows—their 10-year anniversary. On this day in 2006, the actors became husband and wife inside Bracciano, Italy's 15th-century Odescalchi Castle, a celebration that reportedly cost them upwards of $3 million.

With a price tag that grand, Tom and Katie's wedding cemented itself in celebrity bridal history. From the cream of the crop Hollywood guest list and double wedding gowns to a dinner serenade by  Andrea Bocelli , it seems no expense was spared on the night Holmes became Mrs.  Tom Cruise .

"If you get invited to that wedding, you go," Brooke Shields , a guest at the wedding, told Jenny McCarthy  in an interview on her  SiriusXM show  in January.

Before the wedding could begin, the bride needed a gown—or two. Holmes sported two dresses during the special night, both designed by wedding attendee Giorgio Armani . For the ceremony, the  Ray Donovan  actress donned an off-the-shoulder silk and lace design adorned with Swarovski crystals. The crystals alone took 350 hours to place, as People reported at the time.

Then, she switched into a one-shoulder off-white silk organza number embellished with more Swarovski crystals.

Katie wasn't the only one to dazzle the crowd in Armani—her groom and the wedding party all wore the label for the special night.

"Katie wanted a simple, elegant dress," Armani told People  at the time. "I wanted to make it modern but at the same time complement the sweetness and energy she conveys."

As fans would learn years later, Holmes accessorized with "something old" gifted to her by Shields. After being publicly criticized by Cruise for taking prescription medication for her postpartum depression, Shields said the actor came to her home to apologize. Soon after, she got a call from Holmes to invite her to their Italian nuptials.

"She said, 'It just wouldn't feel right without you there,'" Shields told McCarthy during the interview in January. "And I said 'OK, I'll bring the something old, as long as it's not me!' And she said, 'would you?'"

The former face of Calvin Klein ultimately delivered the bride-to-be an antique enamel compact.

The supermodel was just one name on the sprawling VIP list of famous attendees, which included  Will Smith  and  Jada Pinkett Smith , fellow Scientologists  John Travolta  and  Kelly Preston , David Beckham and Victoria Beckham , Jenny McCarthy and then-partner  Jim Carrey ,  Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez and former Scientologist Leah Remini .

Once inside the castle's armory doors, guests were greeted by flag bearers sporting traditional Renaissance attire. With Cruise's older children, Connor and Isabella , Holmes' maid of honor, sister Nancy Blaylock , and Cruise's best man, Scientology leader David Miscavige , present, the couple took part in Scientology's traditional "double ring" ceremony and sealed it with a kiss.

What followed was a seemingly endless celebration that carried into different halls of the castle, as People  described at the time. After a round of toasts, the bride danced with her father,  Martin Holmes , to  Louis Armstrong 's "What a Wonderful World" and joined Cruise for their first dance to  Fleetwood Mac 's "Songbird."

"It didn't take much time before I realized this Tom guy was a special guy—that he loved Katie, that he cared for her and supported her," Martin said during a toast at their rehearsal dinner at the Villa Aurelia. "Tonight, I am extremely proud and happy to raise my glass to Katie and Tom."

One five-tier wedding cake and fireworks display later, the guests danced the night away with music producer Mark Ronson spinning tunes and Lopez jumping in to perform one of her songs live when it came on.

A nostalgic moment arrived when Cruise sang  The Righteous Brothers ' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" to his bride—a nod to his iconic performance in  Top Gun .

Of course, the song now seems like a moment of foreboding as, five and a half years after they wrapped the late-night festivities and boarded a jet to the Maldives for their honeymoon, Holmes filed for divorce . The two have not remarried and Holmes continues to live with her daughter.

While their high-profile relationship was a subject of controversy and speculation since Cruise first jumped on Oprah Winfrey 's couch, the actress recently revealed she wouldn't do it differently.

"I really enjoy my life," she told Ocean Drive   a year ago. "I don't really regret anything that I've done. I've learned from everything, and everything sort of leads you to the next place. I just keep going."

10 years after Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes tied the knot, the A-Z of their lavish Italian wedding

There may not have been a happy ending but it was still a spectacular wedding

It's been 10 years since Katie Holmes became the third Mrs Tom Cruise .

The couple wed in a lavish ceremony presided over by a Church of Scientology minister in Bracciano, Italy.

The pair had a daughter, Suki, but sadly split six years after they tied the knot.

There may not have been a happy ending but it was still a spectacular wedding.

Here's our A-Z guide to the A-list nuptials...

A is for Giorgio Armani - the famous Italian couturier was busy with the old needle and thread. Not only did he design Katie's wedding dress and Tom's morning suit, but he also ran up outfits for the rest of the bridal party.

B is for the Beckhams - the best mates of the bride and groom. Sadly, Victoria attended the wedding on her own after David was ordered back to Spain by his club Real Madrid.

B is also for opera star Andrea Bocelli. The blind Italian tenor sang Ave Maria after Katie specially requested it - an attempt to appease her Catholic folks, no doubt.

C is for "cat and comb" - two bizarre offerings that Tom pledged to provide for Katie during their marriage. A Scientology minister reads: "Girls need clothes and food, tender happiness and frills, a pan, a comb, a cat."

D is for daddy and discord . Martin and Kathleen Holmes were reportedly unhappy about their daughter's choice of boyfriend. Katie's dad, a divorce lawyer, is said to have clashed with "controlfreak" Cruise.

And, as a practising Catholic, said that he would not attend a Scientology wedding.

E is for the Eiffel Tower . Paris is the city for lovers and it was at its famous landmark, on June 17, 2005, that Tom told the world that he and Katie were engaged after a whirlwind seven-week romance.

F is for favours . Wedding guests took away a pair of £550 Chrome Hearts sunglasses after a £100,000 order was placed at London store Mallon & Taub. F is also for flowers. The sleepy Italian town of Bracciano spruced itself up for the big day by planting lots of red and white blooms.

G is for George Lucas . The Star Wars director offered the couple the use of his super-secret Italian hideaway if they wanted to elude the press for their nuptials.

H is for helicopters . They were allowed to buzz over Odescalchi Castle, where the couple wed, after their request for a no-fly zone was refused. H is also for Hassler - the luxurious hotel where Tom and Katie stayed in the run-up to their wedding. They reserved the seventh-floor £2,500-a-night penthouse suite.

I is for Isabella and Connor (Tom's adopted kids with Nicole Kidman) who flew to Rome with their granny, Mary Lee, to be at the Big Day.

J is for John Travolta , Jennifer Lopez and Jada Pinkett- Smith (wife of Will Smith) who jetted into Rome's Ciampino airport ready for the big day.

Guests also included Brooke Shields, who patched things up with Tom after he criticised her for taking anti - depressants.

K is for Chris Klein - Katie's ex-fiance. The pair were engaged for five years before Katie decided the American Pie star wasn't to her taste after all. Soon afterwards, she began dating Tom.

L is for limousines . Cruise hired a fleet of these luxury cars to whisk his A-list guests the 37 miles from Rome to the wedding venue.

M is for money-minded Mayor Patrizia Riccioni , who charged the media £675 for positions overlooking the wedding venue and £200 to park a satellite truck.

She said: "While we welcome the wedding it's not fair the citizens of Bracciano should pay for these costs. We've had to bring in extra staff and extra security."

A private terrace overlooking the route of the wedding cars was offered to a TV crew for £68,000.

N is for No.3 . Katie was Tom's third wife. He first got hitched to actress Mimi Rogers in 1987 - they split three years later. Second time down the aisle was with Nicole Kidman. They married in 1990 and separated just shy of their 10th wedding anniversary.

N is also for Nino's, where more than 100 people gathered for a pre-wedding dinner. Owner Anna Guaranacci said: "Tom rang personally and asked us to prepare a menu including a big beef steak for him and similar for the guests."

O is for the ivy-clad Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano - the magnificent wedding venue which boasts six towers, spectacular gardens and its own chapel. It is owned by Princess Maria Pace Odescalchi and has been in her family for 500 years. Mayor Riccioni has confirmed that the authorities have been asked to restrict traffic at the entrance of the building today.

P is for perfume . Katie wafted down the aisle in a cloud of Clive Christian No.1 scent. It comes in a diamond and crystal flask and costs £1,245 an ounce. Phew!

Q is for queues . Not of the A-list wedding guests - who were ushered straight into the castle by security - but the crowds lining the town's streets in the hope of catching a glimpse of a few famous faces.

R is for rose-and-coffee-scented candles . Cruise ordered 6,000 of these fragrant decorations for inside Odescalchi Castle.

S is for Scientology . Tom's aides confirmed that the service will be conducted by a Church of Scientology minister flown in from the US. A civil ceremony also took place because the Scientology service is not recognised in Italy. S is also for Suri, their daughter.

T is for toilets . The town of Bracciano hired dozens of portaloos to cater for expected mass influx of TV crews and celebrity-spotters. It also laid on special shuttle buses to run visitors into its historic centre.

U is for underwear . During a shopping trip in LA, Katie splashed out £2,000 on sexy undies to wow Tom on their wedding night. At a West Hollywood store called La Bra Lingerie, she bought the Chantilly Lace Bridal collection of silk stockings, a black suspender belt, a £400 silk nightie trimmed with ostrich feathers, and a lace bra studded with crystals.

V is for Walter Veltroni , the Mayor of Rome. He asked Tom and Katie - together with baby Suri, Tom's kids Isabella and Conor and the Holmes family - to dinner at City Hall before the wedding.

W is for Oprah Winfrey . It was on her show that Tom famously declared he was crazy about Katie by jumping all over the furniture in a bizarre display of public affection.

Strangely, the chat-show queen was not invited to the nuptials. Oprah said: "It's not that I'm not going. It's that they had a limited number of people that they could invite.

"I was not one of the invitees. That's fine. I don't get invited to everyone's wedding.

"I have a great deal of respect for their relationship and so I'm trying to think of what to get them. What do you give Tom Cruise?"

X is for extra help . Tom reportedly flew in 60 members of his staff to help prepare for the wedding.

Y is for yummy cocktails . Guests quaffed Bellinis made from delicious Italian sparkling wine Prosecco. Cheers!

Z is for zabaglione - a traditional Italian dessert made from raw eggs and Marsala wine. Tom and Katie ordered it as part of their wedding breakfast. They also hired the Del Bolognese restaurant in Rome to feed their guests. Also on the menu was mozzarella and parma ham, followed by pasta with a meat or fish sauce, then a choice of beef or fish.

A Calculated Breakup

By Jacob Bernstein

  • July 13, 2012

THERE she was in her little blue dresses and her nifty sunglasses, the newly single mom holding her adorable 6-year-old daughter as she raced around New York City. One minute, she was carrying an ice cream cone for the child. The next, they were feeding animals at the Central Park Zoo.

Stars, we are told, are just like us. But few have done quite as well as Katie Holmes at winning over the sympathies of a tabloid-buying public, of convincing people that she really is their type. People magazine practically described her as a feminist icon, far from the “passive, demure” plaything she had once supposedly been.

About two weeks ago, Ms. Holmes, 33, announced her split from Tom Cruise, 50, a breakup that reportedly threw the famed action star for a loop. And she quickly followed that news by taking the unusual path of being photographed all over the city, showing up for a scheduled shoot for “Project Runway” and appearing on the cover of the August issue of Elle in what now seems to have been a cannily timed interview.

It’s far from the “please respect my privacy” stance that most celebrities take when they announce a divorce. (Even the ubiquitous Kim Kardashian laid low after splitting from Kris Humphries.)

It all seemed a bit too calculated. Having made millions of dollars as an actress, first as the star of the WB drama “Dawson’s Creek” and then as Christian Bale’s love interest in the Batman franchise, did Ms. Holmes really need to run out for milk on a recent day when dozens of paparazzi were outside her door?

Perhaps not, but few are holding it against her, if conversations with magazine editors, fashionistas and Hollywood publicists are to be believed.

As Janice Min, the editorial director of The Hollywood Reporter, put it: “The whole narrative on Katie Holmes was ‘She’s been brainwashed and lobotomized. She’s a zombie for Scientology.’ That’s what made this whole saga breathtaking. Forget the princess in ‘Brave.’ This is the heroine of the moment.”

Liz Rosenberg, the publicist for many celebrities who have been through nasty breakups and divorces, among them Madonna and Cher, concurred.

tom cruise katie holmes house

“People see her as a battered wife who got out,” she said. “I don’t know why. I don’t have the hatred for Tom Cruise other people have, but whatever went on between them, she came out smelling like a rose.”

Indeed. Whatever Ms. Holmes’s strategy was, it seems to have worked. The couple reached a settlement (the terms have not been disclosed, but have reportedly left the former Mrs. Cruise well off, as well as with primary custody of Suri) in near-record time, suggesting that the sweet-looking actress is very savvy.

Even the fashion crowd, which previously grumbled that Ms. Holmes’s clothing choices were a bit of a bore, is now applauding her style sense.

“I’m fascinated by what she’s been wearing,” said Charlotte Cowles, an editor at New York Magazine’s fashion blog, the Cut. “It’s simple relatable clothing. She’s playing the mom role she wants to portray herself as: a loving parent and as a normal person, America’s sweetheart. It’s a clichéd term, but Tom Cruise is a wild card, and she knows she needs to play the opposite. She’s been very smart.”

Nor does it hurt that many of the clothes Ms. Holmes has been wearing are ones she designed for her fashion label, Holmes & Yang (which she started with the stylist Jeanne Yang). Hence the paparazzi shots of her have become something akin to a stealth ad campaign, Ms. Holmes’s very own product-placement extravaganza.

“The way she’s getting photographed today, she’s in a position to get more exposure than ever before,” said Robert Burke, a former Bergdorf Goodman executive and prominent consultant to numerous fashion brands. “She’s not waiting for fashion editors and stylists to come and pull her clothes.”

Still, Mr. Burke was mostly amazed at the larger story, and how deftly Ms. Holmes had executed an image overhaul.

“More than anything, she looks like a strong individual, which is probably the most appealing factor,” he said.

So again: how exactly did this happen?

Some Hollywood intimates thought they were witnessing the handiwork of the actress’s father, Martin Holmes, a lawyer in Ohio who helped guide his daughter’s career before she met Mr. Cruise. He is said to have been suspicious of her famous husband for some time.

Others viewed the split as part of the natural evolution of a woman who had been on a long journey toward finding herself.

In that interview with Elle (wearing Holmes & Yang, naturally), which was conducted well before the public split, Ms. Holmes spoke in a way that suggested a growing schism with Mr. Cruise.

“I’m starting to come into my own,” she said. “It’s like a new phase.”

But wherever her newfound sense of independence comes from, it’s clear that Ms. Holmes is in a very different mental place from the one she was in when she first met Mr. Cruise in 2005, when she was an up-and-coming young actress and he was a global star with two marriages behind him, including a 10-year union with Nicole Kidman.

Shortly after the couple announced their engagement, Ms. Holmes was the subject of a withering profile in W Magazine, where the writer Rob Haskell suggested that the marriage was arranged, described Ms. Holmes’s eyes as being focused on “nothing in particular” and used every effusive comment she made about Mr. Cruise against her.

“The lady doth protest not nearly enough,” Mr. Haskell wrote.

In almost no time, the influence of Mr. Cruise on his future bride’s life became the subject of endless tabloid speculation, which only grew more intense after she announced her involvement with the Church of Scientology, fired her agent, switched publicity teams and became pregnant with the couple’s daughter.

In public, Ms. Holmes pretended not to let the scrutiny get her down. But she was clearly aware of it.

On the set of the 2008 film “Mad Money,” a caper about three women who commit a robbery, the director, Callie Khouri, recalled a day when a costume staff member was with Ms. Holmes in her trailer. The wardrobe person wanted Ms. Holmes to change into her on-camera outfit and suggested taking her jewelry off there and leaving it behind.

Ms. Holmes flinched.

“She said, ‘If someone gets a picture of me without my ring, I will not stop hearing about it for weeks,’ ” Ms. Khouri said. “And I thought ‘Oh, my God.’ Imagine having to be that conscious of all that stuff.”

Still, Ms. Khouri said that she never quite bought the idea that Ms. Holmes was a damsel in distress, captive in a marriage she did not want to be in.

“She was not stupid, in my experience,” Ms. Khouri said. “Quite the opposite. When I was working with her, she seemed very happy. If things changed, the fact that she was able to do this without making it a big ugly public thing is not unlike what I would expect. She’s a dignified girl and she’s been in show business since she was a little kid. She’s not a neophyte.”

Katie Holmes Talks Tom Cruise Split and Moving to New York with Suri

"That time was intense. It was a lot of attention..."

  • Katie Holmes was married to Tom Cruise from 2006 to 2012, with whom she has a daughter, Suri .
  • Following her divorce from Cruise, Holmes dated Jamie Foxx until 2019.
  • In a new interview, Holmes has opened up about life following her split from the Mission Impossible star.

Katie Holmes is currently enjoying a prolific period of work, with the release of movies Brahms: The Boy II and The Secret: Dare to Dream , and as she prepares to direct Rare Objects .

Amid her recent success, Holmes reflected on past challenges during a new interview with InStyle . In particular, the former Dawson's Creek star spoke about what it was like moving to New York with daughter Suri in 2012, right around the time she also filed for divorce from Tom Cruise. Holmes explained, "That time was intense. It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it. We had some funny moments out and about in public."

But as she's gotten older, the actress has come to terms with life in the public eye, and sounds more at peace with herself than ever.

She told InStyle , "Obviously, as a public person, I've gotten a lot of attention at different periods in my life. And when you have a lot of attention, sometimes you don't want to leave the house because it's just too much."

She continued, "You can get consumed by what people think, but suddenly you just decide to do things on your own terms. I feel like I'm finally figuring that out. I'm getting the projects I want made and just relaxing a little. I've been around for a long time, and I'm still here! I can't believe it."

But we can believe it, and we can't wait to see what Katie does next.

Tom Cruise's Palatial English Estate Is a Scientologist's Dream Home

tom cruise katie holmes house

While Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible franchise keeps growing, his real estate portfolio is shrinking. The superstar has been selling off properties over the past couple years, including a $59 million Colorado lodge put on the market in 2014 and an $11.4 million Hollywood Hills estate he sold to actress Eva Longoria in October. Now, Variety is reporting that he just put Dormans Park, his charming English estate, on the market for about $7.4 million.

The four-floor, five- to six-bedroom mansion is located about 30 miles outside London and is not only notable for its grand design, but also because Tom purchased it with then-wife Katie Holmes in 2006. While the marriage didn't have a happy ending, the 11,331-square-foot house is happily poised to be a money-making investment since Tom purchased it for around $4.75 million, millions below its current listing price. The home sits on more than 14 acres and, despite its classic brick design, was built in 2003 – though parts of the original Victorian-era property still exist. In addition to the main residence, there is a 1,436-square-foot guest house perfect for visitors or staff.

Not surprisingly, the home is equipped with every luxury amenity and move-star-worthy feature, including a sprung-floored dance studio and gym, a luxe screening room, and a game room. There's as much to do outside the home as there is inside it. Encased by lush park-like gardens, the grounds include a heated outdoor pool, spa, tennis court, and a series of interconnected ponds.

We're guessing part of Tom's attraction to the property was its proximity to Saint Hill Manor , the former family residence of L. Ron Hubbard and current British headquarters of the Church of Scientology. It's located a short six-mile drive or four-mile walk from Dormans Park.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes reached a settlement in their divorce case, putting an official end to the much-scrutinised romance less than two weeks after Holmes unexpectedly filed for divorce.

"The case has been settled and the agreement has been signed," Holmes attorney Jonathan Wolfe said in a statement. Cruise's rep Amanda Lundberg confirmed the settlement. An assistant in Wolfe's office who would not give her name would not elaborate on the agreement. "We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life," the statement from Holmes' attorney said. "We thank Tom's counsel for their professionalism and diligence that helped bring about this speedy resolution." Cruise, 50, and Holmes, 33, had a romance that ended as it began — as tabloid fodder. Earlier Monday, they asked for privacy for their family with 6-year-old daughter Suri. "We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents," read the statement from Lundberg and Holmes representative Nanci Ryder. The resolution was notably quick, particularly in Hollywood terms. By way of comparison, Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries are still negotiating a divorce for an August 2011 marriage that lasted less than three months. "A quick settlement indicates that they were able to agree that they'll both do some co-parenting," said Steve Mindel, a managing partner in the Los Angeles firm Feinberg, Mindel, Brandt and Klein who has handled bi-coastal divorce cases. Mindel said the next step would be for Holmes or Cruise to file to have their status changed to divorced, but that the actual financial and child custody details won't get filed in court unless there's some later dispute. In the celebrity news media, Holmes has been portrayed with overwhelmingly more sympathy. Whether true or not, the narrative that emerged was of a locked-away Holmes breaking free from the servitude of a strange, corrupting marriage. Us Weekly has reported that the couple "fought viciously" over Scientology parenting. The Daily News has trumpeted Holmes entering "a new phase." A TMZ headline blared "Tom treated me like a robot." That may also be the most convenient view of a relationship that even at its start spawned "Free Katie!" T-shirts. Cruise's camp vigorously denied such a reading. Cruise's lawyer Bert Fields has said they were letting "the other side play the media until they wear everyone out." The Church of Scientology, too, didn't want to be portrayed as the schism between the couple. The quick settlement and joint statement may put out some of that fire. "It's not entirely certain that it's all about Rapunzel fleeing the castle, which is the motif that people love to use," said Larry Hackett, managing editor of People magazine, which broke the news of Holmes' divorce filing. He called this the biggest celebrity story in two or three years, excepting the sudden death of Whitney Houston. In Touch Weekly and its sister magazine, Life & Style Weekly, are among the many outlets to focus on the Holmes-as-escapee angle. Their covers on the divorce read "The Fight for Suri" and "Katie Breaks Free," respectively. "We're intrigued by who the real Katie is," says Dan Wakeford, editor-in-chief of both magazines. "She's been hidden for so long and dominated and controlled by Tom, so we really want to know what she's like and how she's going to change." In the week and a half since filing for divorce, Holmes also captured the spotlight with a handful of public appearances. She stopped by to tape a guest judge appearance on Lifetime's "Project Runway," was snapped taking Suri for ice cream, and was seen taking a trip to the Children's Museum of the Arts. The appearances have only fed the view that Holmes is now living easier and freer — and conversely, that she's orchestrating a public relations campaign. On the other hand, Holmes may have simply been trying to regain a measure of privacy, said celebrity publicist Howard Bragman, vice chairman of reputation.com. "I think she's being smart. If you engage in a bunker mentality, you build up demand" for photographs, Bragman said. "My clients who are under siege by paparazzi, I say go on and live your life. It lets some of the air out of the balloon, if you will." Cruise has two children with his previous wife, Nicole Kidman. The actor was also previously married to Mimi Rogers. This was Holmes' first marriage. Their divorce case lasted less than two weeks, but Mindel said that's not uncommon for high-profile breakups: "There's too many incentives on both sides of the equation for settlement." When actress-singer LeAnn Rimes' husband filed for divorce in December 2009, it only took a day before the couple filed a judgment. Actor-comedian Russell Brand's divorce from singer Katy Perry took a little over a month to resolve, while director Cameron Crowe and singer-guitarist Nancy Wilson resolved their 2010 divorce in less than three months. Cruise and Holmes may have saved more than just their dignity by not fighting out their divorce in court — Mindel said a drawn-out custody battle would have likely cost more than a million dollars in legal fees. Mindel said the issue for Holmes and Cruise going forward is how they navigate their parenting as Suri grows up. "The question's going to be did they have enough time to flesh out how they're going to resolve future disputes," Mindel said.

Katie Holmes radiates joy as she counts down to special day in stunning new photo

Katie Holmes was all smiles in a brand new photo shared on social media at the start of the week, ahead of a big moment in her career.

The Dawson's Creek star has been counting down the days until the premiere of her new Broadway show, Our Town , on September 17, and she looked radiant in a picture posted on Instagram with her co-star, Michelle Wilson.

In the photo, the mother-of-one looked stylish dressed in a white blouse tucked into a pair of elongated black pants, and wore her long hair down in a sleek straight 'do.

Her co-star looked equally as chic, dressed in a white waistcoat styled over a T-shirt and teamed with linen pants and sneakers, as they both posed in front of a tree.

"Such an honor and so much fun working with the incredible @michellelynnwilson in @ourtownbroadway. Preview performances begin September 17," she wrote alongside the image.

Katie has been sharing several behind-the-scenes photos ahead of the show's debut, including a recent group photo of the entire cast and crew.

In the caption, she wrote: "Thank u @iamkennyleon for this incredible journey creating @ourtownbroadway preview performances begin September 17. Opening October 10! Come join us!"

Katie will be starring alongside four-time Emmy Award winner Jim Parsons as the show returns to Broadways in the first time in 20 years.

The official synopsis reads: "In Wilder's timeless tale of a small town, a stage manager narrates the daily lives of its locals, depicts a childhood friendship turn into marriage, and sets the stage for magnificent truths of what it means to be alive. Don't miss this strictly limited engagement of an essential American classic."

The show takes place at the Barrymore Theatre in New York's Broadway. Katie plays Mrs Webb in the much-anticipated show.

Rehearsing for Our Town has been a great distraction for the doting mom, who recently became an empty nester after her daughter Suri, 18, left home to attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Katie is a devoted mom to Suri and will no doubt be visiting her daughter regularly, while also allowing her to have the space to thrive in her new chapter.

While she has prefered to keep her family life out of the spotlight over the years, the star has given several glimpses into their sweet bond in previous interviews.

On raising her daughter in New York City, Katie once told InStyle: "The city has a lot to offer, and I use it. Yes, it's a little too exposed at times, and we work hard to maneuver and navigate.

"But what I love about New York is that for me and my child, this is our vibe. When there are 25 things to do every night, it takes you out of your own thing. And you know what else I discovered? There's a place not far from my house that does foot massages until midnight. That's what New York offers!"

Inside the glam nyc rental that katie holmes calls home.

Since splitting from her megastar husband, Tom Cruise, back in 2012, Katie Holmes has regained her independence and moved around a bit, setting up shop in Los Angeles and New York City .

Right now, the Ray Donovan starlet certainly has a gem in her rented three-bed, two-bath condo in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. Located in a luxury postwar building that pairs modern architecture with contemporary design, Holmes’ 2,400-square-foot penthouse pad, which has views of the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, and the World Trade Center, comes with every amenity you could think of (doorman, bicycle room, full “smart-house” technology, etc.).

Inside, the open floor plan is flooded with natural light. A corner living/dining room captures your attention thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows and a wood-burning fireplace. The kitchen, where surely Holmes and her daughter cozy up for hot chocolate in the winter, is the custom-designed centerpiece of the home, complete with Miele appliances, including a double wall oven, five-burner range, and a built-in espresso machine.

The master suite is Zen-inspired. A dressing area and en-suite bathroom features a dual-basin vanity, huge walk-in shower, heated towel rack, and a laundry closet. The second bedroom, where Princess Suri most likely rests her head, has its own windowed bathroom and a custom Murphy bed. The third bedroom, which doubles as a library with built-in bookcases, has plenty of storage space.

The landscaped terrace, which has its own irrigation system, boasts a variety of wicker furniture and an outdoor shower, which must come in handy in the middle of Manhattan. It’s not Dawson’s Creek , but it’ll do.

Katie Holmes: How She Planned Her Split from Tom Cruise

"She was talking to Tom on the phone until last week saying, 'I love you,' " says a source

tom cruise katie holmes house

Katie Holmes ‘s decision to leave Tom Cruise may have seemed sudden , but it involved meticulous planning.

And no one was more shocked than Cruise himself.

“She was talking to Tom on the phone up until last week saying, ‘I love you,’ ” a source tells PEOPLE of the actress.

“Her inner circle has been planning this and switching out cell phones since she was in China [in mid-June],” adds the source.

“When new cell phones arrived, then nobody could reach her. Her old best friends from last week don’t have her new number, no email. She’s unreachable.”

Holmes, 33, also rented her new apartment in New York City in early June. “[Tom] knew that she moved there, but [he thought it was] for different reasons,” says the source.

“She said she moved there to drive into the underground garage. There are fewer paparazzi and it’s less intrusive for her,” says the source. “It was the first phase of getting everything out of the house, and that’s why she was able to say she’s moving without giving an indication that she was going to divorce him.”

Then, last week, her father, Martin Holmes , arrived in New York and helped his daughter clean house, firing many of the people around her shortly before Holmes filed for divorce anonymously in New York City.

Cruise, then filming in Iceland, “had no idea this was coming,” a source tells PEOPLE in the magazine’s new cover story, on newsstands now.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes

Still, despite relocating to New York and beginning her life as a single mother, Holmes remained tight-lipped about her divorce. In 2016, Radar Online claimed that the couple’s rapid divorce, which was finalized in just 11 days, featured a clause that prevented Holmes from speaking out about her ex-husband. In exchange for $4.8 million in child support and $5 million for herself, Holmes allegedly agreed not to talk about Cruise, Scientology or even date publicly until 2017. This leads us on to one of the Dawson’s Creek alum’s rare admissions about her divorce which she shared in 2020.

While speaking to InStyle , Holmes reflected on her 2012 move to New York City after her divorce. She recalled: “That time was intense. It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it. We had some funny moments out and about in public. So many people I didn’t know became my friends and helped us out, and that’s what I love about the city.”

The proud mom has given us occasional glimpses into her and Suri’s life over the years and if those tidbits of information, and the rare paparazzi photo we get, are anything to go by, a now-17-year-old Suri is growing into a happy young woman. Still, the rumors continue to swirl about Cruise’s absence from his daughter’s life. The father-daughter duo have not been photographed together in over a decade and a March report stated that the actor is missing key events in Suri’s life such as her high school graduation and her college application process.
