How to Travel from Brussels to Paris by Train, Bus, Car, and Plane

train travel time brussels to paris

Jarrett Campbell / Creative Commons

Most Euro-trips include obligatory stops in Paris and Brussels, two cities known around the world for their troves of classic paintings, Art Nouveau architecture, and delicious pastries. If you're traveling around Europe it can be difficult to decide what route to take, but the Belgian and French capitals are so close together and easily connected that it's the easiest leg you'll have to plan. The distance between them is about 195 miles, but a direct train from Brussels-South Station to Gare du Nord in central Paris gets you there in no time.

Travelers on a tight budget can also take a bus, which takes significantly longer but is potentially much cheaper, especially if you're booking last minute. Only one airline offers direct flights between the two cities, although the price is so exorbitant that only in the most extraordinary circumstances would it make sense to travel by plane.

How to Get from Brussels to Paris

  • Train: 1 hour, 25 minutes, from $32
  • Flight: 55 minutes, from $300
  • Bus: 4 hours, 25 minutes, from $10
  • Car: 3 hours, 30 minutes, 195 miles (312 kilometers)

Traveling around Europe by train is a dream vacation for many, but high ticket prices and the rise of budget airlines has made train travel less feasible. Fortunately, the rail route between Brussels and Paris continues to be fast, convenient, and affordable—if you purchase tickets early. Train schedules typically open four months in advance, and ticket prices creep up as you get closer to your travel date. Purchase your tickets directly from the train operator, Thalys , as soon as you know your plans. Standard class tickets start at $32 but can shoot up over $100 if you purchase them last minute.

In hopes to attract more travelers on a budget, Thalys also owns a low-cost subsidiary train service called IZY , which offers one or two trains per day from Brussels-South to Gare du Nord for as low as 10 euros, or roughly $11. The trip takes about an hour longer than the standard train for a total travel time of 2 hours and 25 minutes, the seats are not as comfortable, and you'll be subjected to the same strict luggage restrictions as a low-cost airline. But if your bank account is forcing you to choose between the IZY train or a bus, then definitely choose the train.

If you find yourself in Brussels and suddenly need to get to Paris, but the low-cost train is fully booked and tickets for the standard train have skyrocketed in price, you can always fall back on the bus. While not the most comfortable or speedy of transit methods, it is cheap, and thankfully the distance is short enough that you aren't forced to endure an overnight ride. Another perk of taking the bus is that there are several pick-up and drop-off stops, unlike the train which always departs from Brussels-South and always arrives at Gare du Nord. If your final destination in Paris is actually the airport or somewhere else outside of the center, the bus may get you much closer.

FlixBus is one of the most popular bus providers, with coaches leaving from Brussels all throughout the day. The trip takes about four and a half hours to get to central Paris, but could be longer or shorter depending on where you choose to get off. Tickets range from $10 to $40 for high-demand times, but it's possible to find a $20 ride even when purchasing for the same day, although you may be leaving in the middle of the night.

In smooth traffic conditions, it takes roughly three hours and 30 minutes to get from Brussels to Paris by car. However, it's important to keep in mind that during periods of heavy traffic (such as during bank holidays and summer holiday periods), travel times can skyrocket. You'll also need to factor in toll charges for your trip, something travelers often forget to include in their budget. American credit cards don't always work properly abroad, so be sure to carry an assortment of bills in euros with you so you aren't caught up at the toll booth.

Because Belgium and France are both members of the European Union, you don't have to worry about any type of border control when you cross from one country to the other. You aren't greeted by long lines or passport checks, just a muted blue sign that simply reads, "France."

With the affordability and efficiency of train travel between Brussels and Paris, there's almost no reason to take a plane. Brussels Airlines is the only company that flies direct between the two cities, and prices start at $300 for a one-way ticket. The actual flight time is only 55 minutes, but once you factor in time to arrive at the airport, go through security, wait at your gate, and all of the other hassles of plane travel, the total trip time is much longer than the train.

Other airlines offer flights with a layover, but the total flight time is at least three or four hours, if not more, and prices start at $75. An option for travelers who want to visit as many countries as possible could book a flight with a long layover in another city, leave the airport for a few hours, and then head back to catch the second flight to Paris. It's a cost-effective way to get an additional trip—albeit an express one—in another city that you wouldn't otherwise be able to see. Layover options from Brussels to Paris include Amsterdam, Rome, Vienna, and many others.

What to See in Paris

Paris is one of the most-visited cities in the world, and it's easy to see why. The city is expansive, and there's no possible way to see everything on one trip (or several, for that matter). Paris is one of those rare cities that travelers keep coming back to over and over again, because there's always something new to discover. If it's your first trip to Paris, there are a few must-see attractions that you shouldn't miss , like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and the winding cobblestone streets of the artsy Montmartre neighborhood. Once you've seen those, explore the rest of Paris however you see fit. Visit another museum, take a day trip to Versailles, or just get lost in the city while snacking on buttery croissants.

There is a direct train from Brussels-South Station to Gare du Nord in central Paris. Be sure to book tickets in advance to get the best price.

The distance between Brussels and Paris is about 195 miles.

If you take the train, the second fastest but most convenient option, it takes one hour and 25 minutes.

A first-timer’s guide to taking the Eurostar

train travel time brussels to paris

Plan your train travels with this guide to the international Eurostar service © Eurostar

It’s been 30 years since the Eurostar first connected London to mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel. As an Australian living in London, I cannot tell you how excited I was the first time I arrived at St Pancras “International” to board a Paris -bound train.

A few trips later, including a recent long weekend in Amsterdam with my kid to celebrate a milestone birthday, I have put together a first-timer’s guide to riding the Eurostar.

Here’s everything you need to know if you’re traveling the Eurostar on a Standard class ticket. And if you want to grab a bargain, sign up for emails to be the first to know when the cheap tickets drop.

A train at a station platform as passengers disembark

Where do you catch the Eurostar train from?

In London, it’s St Pancras International, which is right next to King’s Cross Station. There’s plenty of public transportation and dozens of places to eat and drink before you board, whether inside the train station or nearby at Coal Drops Yard (north of the station). Heading south over beyond Euston Rd, the area has a slight ghost town feel after dark.

In Paris, the train departs from Gare du Nord, which is located in the 10th arrondissement . Queues to buy tickets for onward travel on the metro are notoriously long, but you can buy tickets on the Eurostar. Be aware it’s also a prime target for pickpockets and scam artists. Don’t be distracted or, like me, you may lose a handbag while being asked a seemingly genuine question by a stranger.

When catching the Eurostar from Amsterdam Centraal , you’ll find the outbound platform is tucked away. Although in 2024 the station is having an upgrade, so watch this space. Stock up on provisions before you go through passport control. The area around the station is busy so take normal precautions, including looking out for trams and cyclists , who have right-of-way no matter what.

At Brussels Midi Station, you may notice a police presence due to heightened security in Europe. The station area is fairly safe, but it can feel less so after dark with fewer people around.

For Lille and Rotterdam , both smaller cities, the stations where the Eurostar alights are centrally located with shops, cafes and sights nearby. Public transport is easy to navigate, but these are also very walkable cities (if you're not carrying a lot of luggage).

First time visiting France? Here’s what you should know

Suitcases and wheelie bags stacked on a luggage rack on board a train

What can I take on the Eurostar?

You can take two bags up to 85cm/33.5in (at its widest/ longest point), plus one piece of hand luggage on the Eurostar. There’s no weight limit, but you do need to be able to lift your bags onto the train and potentially up to the rack above your seat.

There is luggage storage space at the end of carriages, but be aware that as we passed through Brussels on our way to Amsterdam, announcements were made to keep an eye on your belongings as thieves have been known to lighten the train’s load.

The best bit of traveling by train compared to flying: there are no restrictions on liquids. You can take all the products and bottled water you like (note that there is nowhere to refill on board). And if you’re up for a tipple, you can take one bottle of wine or bubbly or four cans of beer on board – except for during some major events, but you’ll get notified if that’s the case.

What else should I bring on the Eurostar?

There are UK and European plug sockets to recharge phones and laptops, although there are no USB sockets with Standard class seats. BYO book or download content to your devices in advance as the wi-fi and phone signal drops out regularly.

A small selection of food and drinks in a buffet car on a train

Can I buy food onboard the Eurostar?

There is a cafe carriage selling snacks and light meals for Standard class travelers (Premium classes get a meal delivered to their seats like on a plane). The menu changes twice a year, but the options are limited, so it’s often better to bring your own food, especially if you have dietary restrictions.

Buy your train supplies before you pass through passport control as the options inside the terminal at St Pancras were very busy the morning we traveled, while at Paris and Amsterdam they’re virtually non-existent.

What can’t I take with me on the Eurostar?

There’s a list of things you cannot take on the Eurostar on the website , most of which follow common sense: firearms, flammables, illegal drugs…. Perishable items like meat, fish and dairy are also on the list, but I am sure I could smell some scrumptious Dutch cheese in somebody’s bag on our way home!

Sadly taking a bike with you is a lot harder than one would hope, given the increase in interest in cycling to get around and cycling holidays in Europe. For full-sized bikes, you need to pre-book passage and disassemble your bike to check it in as luggage. Folding bikes and children’s bikes can be brought on board with you, but they need to be in a protective bag.

Do I need to print my Eurostar tickets?

Print your ticket out if you want a paper back up, but you can scan tickets directly from the Eurostar app at arrival gates. If your seat has changed for whatever reason, a fresh paper ticket will be printed for you at the gate.

Next, you move onto border control via security, like you do at an international airport.

Do I need a visa as well as my passport?

Make sure you are up-to-date on what documents you need for European travel, which varies by nationality.

As well as your passport, from late 2024 biometric information (a face scan or fingerprints) will be collected at European borders, which is expected to slow down the check-in process and may have a knock-on effect on the number of passengers that can be booked and processed per train.

Also note that from 2025, all non-EU citizens (that includes the British, obviously) will need an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) – a €7 visa-waiver scheme like the US ESTA – to enter Europe.

Wondering about your visa situation? We have guidance for France , the UK and Belgium

Do you really need to get there 90 minutes before your Eurostar train departs?

Yes, you really do. Cutting it fine can work out, but there are sometimes multiple trains from St Pancras, so queues can build quickly. Also seating inside terminals is limited, so do yourself a favor and get there on time.

What happens if I miss my train?

This has happened to me (or should I say, yes, I did this to myself), and Eurostar kindly rebooked our group on the next service headed to Paris. However we did lose our seat bookings and found ourselves in the backward-facing seats with no window views on the later train. Luckily the cafe carriage has large windows, so we congregated there for most of the journey.

A carriage on a train with seats in a two-by-two formation and an aisle in the center

How do you choose seats?

You’ll be allocated seats with your booking, but you can change these online or via the app. I recommend you do that as soon as you can because (as mentioned) there are seats on the Eurostar with no or partial views, and while 30 minutes is under the Channel, the rest of the journey is a chance to see the changing landscape.

Some Eurostar travelers also recommend bringing some kitchen towels or wet wipes and giving your window a clean – inside and out if you can – to improve the view.

Are there sleeper trains from London?

You’ve probably seen the headlines about Europe’s new golden age of train travel with more passengers embracing the greener alternative to short-haul flights. In 2024 there has been an uptick in sleeper train services in Europe, with new overnight routes from Paris to Berlin and Vienna to Hamburg on ÖBB's Nightjet.

There’s talk of the European Sleeper company connecting London to its night services via the Eurostar, so watch this space. And a sleeper train direct from London to further European cities may well be on the horizon.

Despite the challenges Brexit has put in its path, Eurostar maintains its ambitions to reach 30 million passengers by 2030. Given the London-to-Paris train journey emits 10 times less carbon per passenger compared to flying (22kg of CO2 per person versus 224kg of CO2), it really does make sense to get to and from Europe by rail.

Decoding Europe’s Train Tickets: A Guide to Budget-Friendly Journeys

T here’s nowhere else in the world where you can jump on a train and be in another country within minutes. Europe is a continent where you can have a morning coffee in Brussels and sit in a Parisian cafe overlooking the Seine for lunch. As a person who grew up in a vast country (Australia), I have always found the concept of country-hopping novel. Here’s why you should consider train tickets for your next visit to Europe.

Why Train Tickets Are a Great Way To See Europe

From the moment I wanted to travel, I started looking into the best way to go about it, and one of the first things I saw was Eurorail. The idea is simple—one fare and you can travel on any train within Europe. It sounds convenient and straightforward until you know the price. One of my first thoughts was, “Surely, there has to be a better way. Surely, this isn’t what people in Europe pay to travel.”

The Basics of European Train Ticketing Systems

Each country in Europe operates its own unique train ticketing system. Travelers can save a significant amount of money by comparing the cost of individual tickets to the options available with Eurail passes. Various factors influence ticket prices, but with flexible plans and early booking, you can bypass expensive ticketing systems and secure more budget-friendly fares.

Most countries have easy-to-use online ticketing systems. It’s just a matter of doing a Google search for the place you’re traveling to. For example, you’ll find Spain’s railway system is called  Renfe . Finding the right operator is essential for optimal savings, as each country’s train operator offers discounted fares for early bookings. For example, booking a Brussels to Paris train ticket through the RailEurope site costs from USD 55 for a one-way ticket and the same on SNCB International, but you’ll be paying a USD 9.50 booking fee on RailEurope.

Other Factors To Consider

The European train ticketing system varies based on the type of train and the country you’re traveling in. Buying train tickets directly at the station is usually convenient for local, regional, and suburban trains since prices are fixed, and reservations are not typically required. However, fares operate similarly to airlines with dynamic pricing for long-distance trains in countries like France, Italy, Spain, and others.

Booking in advance can offer significant savings, but tickets have specific terms like limited refunds or changes. Traditional ticketing methods apply in countries like the UK, Germany, and Austria, with flexible and advance-purchase options available, each with its pricing and reservation rules. Understanding these nuances, including booking options, stopover policies, and special fare considerations like senior or youth discounts, is essential to navigating the system effectively and securing the best travel deals.

15 Best Books To Read Before Visiting Europe

When to use eurail.

If you take our Brussels to Paris example from above, you’d be paying $141 if you bought a Eurail pass for the same trip plus seat reservation fees. Eurail does have its advantages, though. If you plan on traveling frequently during your trip, the pass may be worth it. For example, if you plan on visiting six destinations over a month, a Global Pass will cost you $391 and allow you seven days of unlimited travel. If you plan on more than seven days of train travel, you can get an unlimited pass for a month, costing $991.

With Eurail, you can choose your travel days within a specified period, freeing you from rigid dates and allowing for plan adjustments. Additionally, the ease of booking and modifying your itinerary through online platforms and mobile apps streamline your travel planning. Moreover, certain Eurail passes offer extra benefits like discounted or complimentary access to attractions, ferry routes, or buses, further enriching your journey with additional options.

Remember you can also use your Eurail pass for train tickets within one country, but it is only available for some forms of transport. For example, you can use the London Overground in the UK, but not the Underground. If you have the time, do some research and see what your options are. If the Underground seems like your best choice to get to places you want to visit, Eurail isn’t for you.

Understanding Fare Classes and Seat Reservations

Some trains offer multiple fare classes, each with its amenities and pricing. Additionally, understanding when seat reservations are mandatory versus optional helps travelers plan better. For instance, while regional trains may not require reservations, high-speed or intercity trains in countries like France and Spain often do, sometimes at an additional cost.

On trains such as Eurostar, which travels through the UK, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Germany, you’ll have an option for first and second-class seating. Sometimes, the price difference might not be a lot; if that’s the case, opt for first class—it provides seats offering additional space and amenities, which may even encompass complimentary food and beverages.

Seasonal Considerations

Seasonal fluctuations impact train tickets and their prices across Europe. High tourist seasons, such as summer or significant holidays, often increase demand, leading to higher prices. Conversely, traveling during off-peak seasons can result in more affordable fares. Being flexible with travel dates or opting for shoulder seasons can be an intelligent strategy for budget-conscious travelers.

Loyalty Programs and Rail Passes

Some European countries offer loyalty programs or discount cards that provide perks like reduced fares, lounge access, or priority boarding. While it might seem strange to join a loyalty program when you’re only going to be in a place for two weeks, joining up can sometimes have benefits. Exploring these options could lead to substantial savings for frequent travelers or those planning an extended European stay. Similarly, aside from Eurail, consider other regional rail passes tailored to specific countries or regions, such as France’s SNCF pass or Italy’s Trenitalia offerings, which might offer better value depending on your itinerary.

Navigating Language and Currency Differences

Many European train ticketing platforms offer English translations. If they don’t, you can ask Google to translate the page for you—right-click on the page and choose “Translate to English” from the drop-down list. Additionally, being aware of currency conversion rates and potential foreign transaction fees when booking from abroad ensures you get the best value for your money. At the moment, there’s not a massive difference between Euros and US Dollars; however, it’s still worth converting the fares to your local currency.

Benefits of Train Travel Over Air Travel

Trains are more environmentally friendly than airplanes or cars on a per-passenger basis, making them a greener option for those concerned about sustainability while touring Europe. A standout benefit of Europe’s rail system is the efficient boarding process. Unlike airports where you might arrive hours in advance for baggage checks and security screenings if your train departure is at 9 am, you can typically arrive closer to that time without extensive waiting or security procedures. While some countries implement a simple luggage scan, others may have minimal to no security checks, streamlining your travel experience.

So, when considering your options to travel between European countries, consider grabbing train tickets and embarking on an unforgettable journey through Europe’s rail network, where convenience, affordability, and sustainability harmoniously converge. Whether indulging in a morning coffee in Brussels or immersing yourself in the scenic beauty along the Seine, the experience transcends mere transportation.
