60 travel photo book title ideas

By Photobox on 31 July 2023

travel facebook title

A travel themed photo album is a great way to celebrate and share your favourite moments in new places, and the title on the cover works to set the tone of your story. It also gives your avid readers an idea of what’s inside, and helps the book stand out on your shelves.

The destination and date of your trip – such as ‘Italy 2023’ – is a very classic and popular travel photo book name idea, and a good way to kickstart an organised collection (because let’s be honest, you’re probably already daydreaming about your next adventure).

For a creative photo album name to summarise your travel stories, think back over what made your trip memorable and special, and what kind of theme the photos in your book follow. The places you visited can also be the *perfect* source of inspiration for your photo book name, from phrases in the local language such as ‘Paris, je t’aime’, to the style of holiday you had like ‘Summer by the Seaside’ for those beach trips.

Coming up with photo album name ideas can be a really fun part of creating your book, but if you’re not much of a wordsmith, it might be leaving you stumped. Not to worry – we’ve got you covered with 60 travel photo album title ideas to help your book make the best first impression.

Guide: How To Come Up With A Slogan For Your Travel Company

Why is your slogan important.

Slogans are critical when doing any sort of marketing or advertising for your business.

Your slogan's role is to help the customer understand the benefits of your product/service - so it's important to find a catchy and effective slogan name.

Often times, your slogan can even be more important than the name of your brand.

Because your slogan has the ability to show your customer the type of commitment you have to them and also tells them exactly what your brand stands for.

So, let's dive into all of the critical pieces to coming up with a great slogan for your travel company.

6 Tips For Creating A Catchy Slogan

1. Keep it short, simple and avoid difficult words

Similar to naming your business , your slogan should be short and simple.

A great rule of thumb is that your slogan should be under 10 words. This will make it easy for your customer to understand and remember.

2. Tell what you do and focus on what makes you different

This is a very important piece - and a lot of brands miss the ball and explaining what it is that makes them unique and different from the next competitor.

There are a few different ways you can incorporate what makes your business special in your slogan:

  • Explain the target customer you are catering your services towards
  • What problem do you solve?
  • How do you make other people, clients or your employer look good?
  • Do you make people more successful? How?

3. Be consistent

Chances are, if you're coming up with a slogan, you may already have your business name, logo, mission, branding etc.

It's important to create a slogan that is consistent with all of the above.

This will help when advertising your business and creating a powerful website.

4. Ensure the longevity of your slogan

Times are changing quickly, and so are businesses.

When coming up with your slogan, you may want to consider creating something that is timeless, and won't just fade with new trends.

Try to avoid using terms like "we are the only" and anything with the word "technology," because your statement could be contradicted at any moment.

5. Consider your audience

When finding a catchy slogan name, you'll want to make sure that this resonates across your entire audience.

It's possible that your slogan could make complete sense to your audience in Europe, but may not resonate with your US audience.

The confusion could be due to language barriers or cultural differences - so you will want to determine who your audience is, and how this could be perceived.

6. Get feedback!

This is one of the easiest ways to know if your slogan will be perceived well, and a step that a lot of brands drop the ball on.

Ask friends, family, strangers and most importantly, those that are considered to be in your target market.

Here's a few ways you can ask for feedback:

  • Ask for feedback on a Facebook group
  • Niche forums
  • Twitter communities
  • Product Hunt
  • Test a few different slogan(s) on Facebook Ads and see what performs best
  • Ask a stranger at your coffee shop!

Examples of Great Slogans And Taglines

Needing a little inspo? We put together a list of some of the best slogans and taglines of all times.

Each phrase offers all the key aspects we discussed above - short, simple, unique, consistent, timeless and targeted to their specific niche.

Here they are:

  • Adidas – Impossible is nothing

  • Airbnb – Belong anywhere
  • Alka Seltzer – I can't believe I ate the whole thing
  • Allstate – You're in good hands

31 titles to inspire travel during national book month.

31 Titles to Inspire Travel during National Book Month featured image

If you're anything like our team of travel experts, you really miss being on the road. Thankfully, we've found comfort in the pages of a book. From classic tales to photo journals, books transport us to familiar haunts and new adventures. Since today marks the start of National Book Month, a time to celebrate literature and honor top authors, we put together a list of books we loved reading (or can't wait to read) that will help you bring travel destinations to life.

Scroll through the list to uncover literary adventures for every age!

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn , Mark Twain General Travel & Adventure, Middle School and above

Hop aboard Huck's raft for a riveting ride down the mighty Mississippi! Likely based on the author's childhood friend, Tom Blankenship, this coming-of-age tale sees Huckleberry Finn flee his father and the constraints of civilized society. Joined by Jim, Miss Watson's fugitive slave, the search for freedom leads Huck to an unlikely friendship , a deeper connection to nature, and a feeling of empathy for the society he left behind. Required reading for many students, this American classic is an assignment any lifelong learner can appreciate.

The Alchemist , Paulo Coelho Spain & Egypt, High School and above

Fueled by a dream of faraway treasure, the young shepherd Santiago leaves behind his home in Andalucía and heads off to the pyramids of Egypt. The journey and the return home are an allegorical tale empowering us all to follow our dreams. Originally written in Portuguese (and in only two weeks! ), this best-selling novel has been translated into more than 80 languages and published in over 100 countries. In 2013, Coelho set a "quirky" Guinness World Record when he signed 53 different translations of the book at a fair in Germany.

Road Signs in Arizona on Route 66

Examine our national identity from an outside perspective as you follow along the author's graphic novel-style memoir. An epic road trip along "the Mother Road" from Santa Monica to Chicago leads Shing Yin Khor, a Malaysian immigrant, to reconcile her two visions of America—glitz and glamour versus poverty and desolation—all while witnessing iconic landmarks across the Southwest.

Around the World in 80 Days , Jules Verne General Travel & Adventure, Middle School and above

How far would you go to win a bet? After hearing that a new train route in India makes it possible to travel around the world in 80 days, Phileas Fogg accepts a wager and recruits his valet to join him on this transcontinental dare from London, with stops in Egypt, India, America, and more. While most of us envision a hot air balloon when we think of this tale, the journey is completed on railways and by sea. Since the novel's publication in the 1870s, many have attempted to recreate the adventure—most famously, journalist Nellie Bly did it in 72 days .

The Art of Travel , Alain de Botton General Travel, College and above

While most travel guides suggest where you should go , "we hear little of why we should go and how we could be more fulfilled doing so." De Botton combines personal experiences and historical accounts from famous writers and travelers to delve into the " peculiar activity of travelling ‘for pleasure.'"

Atlas Obscura: An Explorer’s Guide to the World’s Hidden Wonders , Joshua Foer, Dylan Thuras, and Ella Morton General Travel, High School and above

From a " global community of explorers " comes an "off-the-beaten-path travel guide to the entire world... like traveling with a local , rather than relying on... top-voted spots ." This thorough and comprehensive tome reminds us how many treasures are waiting to be discovered " and actively encourages its readers to explore the world, rather than travel it."

London - Paddington Bear Statue at Railway Station

Charming readers for over 60 years, this childhood classic introduced a very prim bear with a love of marmalade, a well-traveled suitcase, and an uncanny knack for finding trouble. Originally from Perú, the bear is found wandering Paddington Station and taken in by the Brown family. Bond based his inventive tale on a lone bear he found at the railway station's gift shop and on " the groups of children he saw on station platforms in London during the war. "

The Bucket List: 1000 Adventures Big & Small , Kath Stathers General Travel & Adventure, High School and above

Travel the world with a purpose! A great read for visual learners, this adventure guide features must-do activities in specific destinations around the world. From the deep blue sea to the tallest mountaintops—and everything in between—Stathers' guide will have you building a travel wish list across the continents.

The Call of the Wild , Jack London Alaska, Middle School and above

Become one with nature as a dog named Buck takes you from California deep into the Alaskan wilderness. Surviving the "brutal cruelty from humans and the wilderness," he ends up leading his dogsled team and is eventually rescued by John Thornton. The story's backdrop is the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s, which Jack London joined to escape his impoverished roots in Northern California. The animal cruelty he witnessed there led to classic tales and "unforgettable adventures."

Destinations of a Lifetime: 225 of the World's Most Amazing Places General Travel, Middle School and above

The experts at National Geographic have compiled a collection of stunning photographs and write-ups from around the world that will motivate even reluctant readers to learn and explore across the globe.

Pagoda in a Tokyo garden

Written and illustrated by a student for her peers, this graphic novel provides a refreshing and relatable look at the search for home and identity. Inzer crafts " a humorous account of her rediscovering her place of birth" after ten years of living in the States. Coming home from Japan with notes and illustrations, she self-published the book in 2014 before it was picked up for wide release a year later.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul , Jeff Kinney Road Trips, Elementary & Middle School

What do you get when you cross a cartoonist with a teenage diary? A best-selling, record-breaking book series! In the ninth installment, follow Greg Heffley and his family on a disastrous road trip that gives way to an unforgettable adventure.

For Whom the Bell Tolls , Ernest Hemingway   Spain, High School and above

One of Hemingway's most influential books, this war novel places us near Segovia in the 1930s, where a young volunteer joins the Spanish Civil War. " All of life—hope, fear, and love—plays out in three days of intense action ." B ased on the author's experiences as a news correspondent at the time, "his finest novel" is an early look at political and military strife at the dawn of World War II.

Gulliver's Travels , Jonathan Swift General Travel & Adventure, Middle School and above

Did you know this is a "satirical masterpiece that's never been out of print "? The voyages of Lemuel Gulliver take him to strange lands, giving him the distance necessary to examine the benefits and challenges of his own society back home. Since its anonymous publication in 1726, adults have appreciated the cultural and political commentary, and children respond to the fantastical journeys. For teachers , the book is a lesson in literary satire, historical allusions, and unreliable narrators .

Koala in a tree in Australia

Let a best-selling travel writer be your humorous, knowledgeable guide across " the country that doubles as a continent." Though Australia lays claim to vicious wildlife and a sometimes unforgiving climate, Bryson also brings to life the "the beauty of this country, home to ravishing beaches and countless unique species ." If a trip Down Under isn't on your bucket list, it's sure to be after this captivating read!

The Innocents Abroad , Mark Twain Europe, Egypt & the Middle East, High School and above

Twain's "irreverent" and fictional retelling of his own excursion through Europe and into Egypt and the Holy Land is another example of literature helping us define ourselves by encountering "what we are not."   The author famously claimed that "travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness," and he brought American and international readers along on trips to faraway places some could scarcely imagine. Since being published in 1869, illustrated versions have helped Twain's "portraiture" of American tourists on a world tour come to life.

Girl by clock at Orsay Museum

When his father passes away and his uncle disappears, Hugo hides away maintaining the clocks in a Paris train station. Determined to restore the automaton first discovered by his father in a museum, Hugo's adventures connect him to "an eccentric, bookish girl" and a toymaker with a big secret. Anchored by hundreds of intriguing illustrations, this prize-winning book has a cinematic feel independent of its film adaptation.

Julia and the Art of Practical Travel , Leslie M. M. Bloom General Travel & Adventure, Middle School and above

The search for home and family takes 11-year old Julia Lancaster and her aunt from New York to California in the late 1960s. They pack up "only the most practical travel things " (like candlesticks and carpets) for a journey that introduces the pair to hippies, a voodoo queen, and a sheriff who wears many hats in his town-of-one. Through the windows of their station wagon and the lens of her camera, Julia documents the people and places that shape her as she tracks down her long-lost mom.

Paris - Skyline_Pixabay3296269

In  The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the nooks and spires of the cathedral became a supporting character, but in Hugo's epic saga of the Romantic era, the city itself becomes a driving force. As we follow Jean Valjean from prisoner to businessman to father, the sights and sounds of 1800s Paris help us understand its people, society, and politics. Selling out its first edition in 24 hours ,  Les Misérables is both deeply local and a universal tale of love and loss, poverty and wealth, oppression and defiance, struggle and redemption.

Love & Gelato , Jenna Evans Welch Italy & Road Trips, Middle School and above

Lina begrudgingly spends a summer in Italy to honor her sick mother's final wish—that father and daughter get to know each other. While there, she discovers her mother's old journals and sets off on a " road trip across Tuscany" that helps her cope with her grief and introduces her first love.

Microadventures: Local Discoveries for Great Escapes , Alastair Humphreys General Travel & Adventure, College and above

Travel doesn't have to be a big production. Humphreys takes the spirit of big adventure and squeezes it into a few days—or even a few hours! If you're looking for a trip idea " that is short, simple, local, cheap—yet still fun, exciting, challenging, refreshing and rewarding," your search begins here .

Siena Skyline

Matar won the Pulitzer Prize for 2016's The Return , documenting his travels to Libya to unearth the truth about the kidnapping of his father, a political dissident. In his next memoir, he explores his connection to Sienese paintings , crafting a story " as much about the city and its people as it is about the famous artworks." These masterpieces helped him mourn his father decades earlier and became a " refuge and a way to think about the world outside the urgencies of the present."

On the Road , Jack Kerouac Road Trips, High School and above

No travel book list is complete without the quintessential novel of the Beat generation . Searching for " the moment when you know all and everything is decided forever," main characters Sal and Dean "zig zag across the continent,"  much like their real-life versions, Kerouac and his friend Neal. Controversial for its portrayal of drug use and counter-culture since its publication in 1957, it's also "revered" for featuring jazz & bebop and other experimental aspects of post-war America.

Cuba - Car on Street in Havana

The only spy novel on our list, this British comedy gives modern audiences a look at Cuba in the late 1950s — before Castro. James Wormold, a vacuum cleaner salesman, begins working with MI6 for sheer convenience, selling them false information and skimming funds by recruiting fake agents. A former intelligence officer  himself, Greene is quite adept at poking holes in the world of espionage.

Peak , Roland Smith New York, Thailand & Mt. Everest, High School and above

The next time you hear a student say reading is boring, hand them this antidote ! A best-selling author of young adult fiction, Smith reaches new heights with the tale of 14-year old Peak Marcello, who loves to climb. After he's arrested trying to scale a Manhattan skyscraper, he's sent to live with his father... whose team is preparing to climb Mount Everest. He soon realizes his father's selfish interests, pushing Peak to become the youngest climber to reach the Summit. Will he give into the appeal of fame and glory — even though it could cost him everything?

The Penguin Lessons , Tom Michell South America, Elementary School and above

While teaching in Argentina in 1975, 23-year-old British expat Tom Michell spends a weekend in Uruguay, where he rescues a penguin from an oil spill, nurses it to health, and attempts to return him to the ocean. But "the bird won't go," and as we witness Michell's "explorations" smuggling his penguin companion into a country under threat of military coup, we must ask—who's saving whom?

The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise , Dan Gemeinhart Road Trips, Elementary School and above

Since losing her mom and sisters in a car accident, Coyote and her dad have lived on the road for five years . They've turned an old school bus into their home, " never staying in any one place for very long." When she gets word that her old park is being demolished (along with the treasure she buried there), Coyote embarks on her toughest journey yet—going home.

Balconies in the French Quarter

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1947, Tennessee Williams' tumultuous family drama is still a must-read in high school and college English classes. Down on her luck after losing Belle Reve, their family's old plantation, Blanche DuBois rides the famously-named streetcar through New Orleans and shows up at her sister's apartment uninvited and unannounced. The cramped quarters heighten tensions between Blanche, her pregnant sister Stella, Stella's Polish-American working-class husband Stanley, and his friend Mitch. Through the striking metaphors in this "fine and deeply disturbing " Southern Gothic play, Williams explores the pitfalls of desire, masculinity and femininity, delusion versus truth, and the decline of the Old South—all while depicting the Vieux Carré as equal parts poetry and despair.

Ten Years a Nomad , Matthew Kepnes General Travel, College and above

A true travel journal, Kepnes' guide " takes you on a trip around the world from start to finish : getting the bug, the planning, setting off, the highs, the lows, the friends, what happens when you come back ." He recounts his decade of travel as a lifestyle and not a vacation, how travel made him reevaluate his priorities and requirements for a good life, and how his wanderlust affected his personal relationships and led him to put down roots. Part guide and part philosopher, Kepnes' " stories will have readers plotting trips of their own ."

The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World General Travel, Elementary School and above

The experts at Lonely Planet created a comprehensive guide with an accurate and inspiring title! With 850 photos of 230 countries, you'll learn not only where to go and when, and what to see or do when you get there, but " how to learn more about the country’s culture from its film, music, food and drink."

Hikers in Spanish Pyrenees

Giving a new meaning to "road trip," Steven Newman put his feet to the pavement for a four-year walk around the world—21 countries and five continents! From the Midwest to the Mediterranean and back again, this memoir reminds us we can make friends wherever we go, we learn the most about ourselves when we get out of our comfort zones, and adventure can be found anytime, anywhere.

Where To use Travel slogans

Where do you use travel slogans? Everywhere! You see them on billboards, in commercials, and even online. They are a great way to get your message across to potential customers and inspire them to take action.

There are many different types of travel slogans, and each one can be used in a different way. Some slogans are designed to be playful and funny, while others are more serious. Some slogans are used to promote specific companies or corporations, while other examples feature general information about travelling.

If you’re looking for travel slogans that will reach your target audience, it’s important to know who you are trying to target. Are they young professionals? Families with children? High school students? Once you know who your audience is, it will be easier to search for a variety of slogans that appeal to them.

If you’re in the business of promoting different modes of transportation, a good place to start looking for travel slogans is on billboards and posters located near transit stations. Transit riders are often people on their way to or from work, so they are typically considered to be busy professionals. It’s a great place to reach this type of passenger with fun and easy-to-remember slogans that reflect your company’s core values.

If you want an example of a travel slogan that targets either high school students or families with children, look no further than National Car Rental’s “Go Places” campaign. This slogan is fun and memorable, and it encourages people to explore new places. It also highlights the company’s focus on customer service, which is a key selling point for National Car Rental.

Creating a slogan for your travel company can be tough. You want something that’s catchy and memorable, but you also need to make sure it accurately represents your brand. Here are a few quick tips to help you create a slogan that will capture attention and inspire travelers to explore the world.

1. Keep it Short: A good slogan should be short and sweet, catchy enough to make it memorable, but not so long that potential customers lose interest. A slogan should be able to fit in a tweet or Facebook post without any difficulty.

2. Make it Clear: Try to use words that are easy to understand and convey the message you want your travel company’s slogan to send out.

3. Be Unique: A good slogan is unique and stands out from the competition. It should be something that people will remember and associate with your brand.

4. Inspire Travel: The best slogans are those that inspire people to explore the world. They make people want to pack their bags and travel to far-off destinations.

5. Integrate Your Brand: If possible, find a way to work your company name into the slogan in some way. This will help customers easily recall it and can make sure they know who you are even when using a different phrase or word in place of the company name.

5 Successful Travel Company Facebook Ad Examples

The first of our travel Facebook ad examples is TourRadar , a well-known online travel marketplace that specializes in multi-day tour group offerings. To boost conversions on their website they set up a campaign using Facebook travel ads and destination ads.

Results they achieved

The campaign was a great success, and over a twelve-month period they doubled their conversion rate and halved their cost per booking. Additionally, they reached over 1.2 million people with relevant ads every month.

Ad format used

How did they do it? They used carousel ads which provided tour headlines, gave prices, showed destination images, mentioned discounts, and had a call to action to showcase their tours to interested travelers who had browsed online but not booked.

To pack more punch, they also set up destination ads which used relevant images and product information to target people who had shown interest online in a destination. The goal here was to entice them to visit the TourRadar website. These ads were also directed to people who had viewed specific tours on their own website.

TourRadar targeted travelers who had already shown interest in a particular tour or destination with key information curated into one visually appealing ad. As a result of using their own first party data which they passed onto Facebook, they were able to fulfill the objectives of the campaign.

Trentino Marketing

Next on our list of success stories is Trentino Marketing . This public tourist board wanted to develop tourism in the very scenic Trentino in Italy. We’ve included them as one of our Facebook ad examples to show how they managed to raise awareness and reach new markets for the destination.

Campaign results

Their four-month Facebook advertising campaign saw a 4.2X year-on-year increase in holiday offers viewed, resulted in an 18.4% increase in organic search traffic on brand keywords after the campaign, and reached 13 million people across Europe and the US in that timeframe. Additionally, 1.5 million people viewed their videos adverts in full, indicating their relevance to the target group.

How did they do it

All of this was achieved using canvas with video ads and the carousel format. Canvas is an interactive media experience ad which encourages viewers to interact with it by swiping and clicking around to see it.

To kick off the campaign and grab travelers attention, Trentino used short eye-catching videos which encapsulated the scenery of the destination.

Next, they progressed to retargeting carousel ads to travelers who had either watched the video for a certain amount of time or who had clicked through to their website. These ads showcased the four different types of holidays travelers could to choose from.

Lastly, they set up five different travel Facebook ad examples in three different languages to take the final step and push conversions.

Ultimately the combination of ad formats captured travelers attention and drove people to the Trentino Marketing website. Furthermore, they helped raise the visibility of both the company as well as the destination on search engines.

Meliá Hotels International

As one of the best Facebook ad examples showcasing how dynamic ads for travel can be successfully used to target a broad audience and find new customers, we have selected  Melia Hotels International success story.

Their success story

The Spanish Hotel chain wanted to target new customers in the UK and drive down the cost per booking compared to their previous UK ad campaigns.

This time they managed to secure a 3.2X lower cost per booking, as well as a 2.8X higher return on ad spend compared to previous campaigns.

Ad solution

Melia Hotels had previously used dynamic ads for travel and been successful with it. However, they wanted to find a way to continuously draw-in new customers from around the world. This led them to try out the ad format using a broad audience target.

They ran their dynamic ads for travel with a broad audience target for one month and delivered them to people in the UK who had travel plans to a specific destination. The ads were customized to each individual, displaying a hotel in a specific destination that was likely to suit their needs.

Why they were a hit

After the trial run had achieved impressive results, Melia setup similar campaigns to run for all of its’ global markets. The very relevant and personally tailored experience that these Facebook ad examples delivered to their target audience made the campaign a huge success for the company.

Now we will take a look at an example of how Facebook ads for travel companies generated interest in El Al's flight fares and improved their click-through rate over a period of five months.

Campaign goals

The Israeli airline wanted to promote special fares and new routes, as well as increase flight searches on its’ website. Ultimately they achieved 5X more flight searches, had a 25% higher click-through rate, and 50% lower cost per flight search than previous campaigns using Facebook ad examples.

Products used

Using Facebook ads for retargeting with a website conversion ad objective, Fialkov Digital put together a campaign that saw El Al retarget travelers who had browsed flights within the last 21 days but not yet booked. The campaign featured ads showing the exact routes people had searched, and appeared across Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, they linked to flight auction site bid2fly to give travelers an even more attractive incentive to book.

Winning all the way

Because the Facebook pixel gives you the power to target a highly relevant audience, El Al was able to match their product with interested travelers. With a prominent CTA, their click-through rate shot up and their website views increased greatly.

Travel Department

To end off our list of Facebook ad examples that travel companies have successfully used to promote their business, we will examine a case study on Travel Department . This holiday company wanted to try out a new way of advertising, as well as boost awareness and sales.

Results of their campaign

They too worked with an agency, Wolfgang Digital. A three-phase campaign was put together and run for three months. Their video ads saw a 27X return on spend, the dynamic and slideshow ads saw a 30X return, while the dynamic ads saw a 131X return.

Formats used

To start with, they used video ads to showcase the stunning destinations and describe their expert services.

In the second phase, they retargeted carousel and slideshow ads to people who had interacted with videos from phase one of the campaign. Carousel ads allowed them to showcase up to ten destinations in one space, and the slideshow ads have almost the same effect of video ads without the related costs.

In the final phase, they used dynamic ads with the Facebook pixel to retarget travelers who had viewed products on the site or added to their basket without completing checkout.

The end story

Again, the various ad formats provided Travel Department with the opportunity to reach a wide audience. They were then able to narrow their audience down to those who expressed interest in their product and successfully target them with relevant ads.

Axon-mimicking Materials for Computing

September 12, 2024 By Michelle Revels

Axons

A team of researchers from Texas A&M University, Sandia National Lab - Livermore, and Stanford University are taking lessons from the brain to design materials for more efficient computing. The new class of materials discovered is the first of their kind – mimicking the behavior of an axon by spontaneously propagating an electrical signal as it travels along a transmission line. These findings could be critical to the future of computing and artificial intelligence.

This study was published in Nature .

Any electrical signal propagating in a metallic conductor loses amplitude due to the metal’s natural resistance. Modern computer processing (CPU) and graphic processing units can contain around 30 miles of fine copper wires moving electrical signals around within the chip. These losses quickly add up, requiring amplifiers to maintain the pulse integrity. These design constraints impact the performance of current interconnect-dense chips.

To combat this limitation, the researchers took inspiration from axons. Axons are a portion of a nerve cell, or neuron, in vertebrates that can conduct electrical impulses away from the nerve cell body.

“Often, we want to transmit a data signal from one place to another, more distant location,” said lead author Dr. Tim Brown, a post-doctoral scholar at Sandia National Lab, and a former doctoral student in materials science and engineering at Texas A&M. “For example, we may need to transmit an electrical pulse from the edge of a CPU chip to transistors near its center. Even for the best conducting metals, resistance at room temperature continually dissipates transmitted signals, so we typically cut into the transmission line and boost the signal, which costs energy, time, and space. Biology does things differently: some signals in the brain are also transmitted across centimeter distances, but through axons made of much more resistive organic matter, and without ever interrupting and boosting the signals.”

Biology does things differently: some signals in the brain are also transmitted across centimeter distances, but through axons made of much more resistive organic matter, and without ever interrupting and boosting the signals.

According to Dr. Patrick Shamberger, associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M, axons are the communication highway. They communicate signals from one neuron to a neighboring neuron. While the neurons are responsible for processing signals, the axons are like fiber optic cables that move signals from one neuron to its neighbor.

Like the axon model, the materials discovered in this study exist in a primed state, allowing them to spontaneously amplify a voltage pulse as it passes down the axon. The researchers took advantage of an electronic phase transition in lanthanum cobalt oxide that causes it to become much more electrically conductive as it heats up. This property interacts with the small amounts of heat generated as a signal passes through the material, resulting in a positive feedback loop.

The result is a set of exotic behaviors not observed in ordinary passive electrical components – resistors, capacitors, inductors – including amplification of small perturbations, negative electrical resistances, and unusually large phase shifts in ac signals.

According to Shamberger, these materials are unique because they exist in a semi-stable ‘Goldilocks state . ’   Electrical pulses neither decay away nor exhibit thermal runaway and break down. Instead, the material will naturally oscillate if it is held under constant current conditions. The researchers determined they could harness this behavior to create spiking behavior and amplify a signal that travels along a transmission line.

“We essentially harness internal instabilities in the material, which continue strengthening an electronic pulse as it passes along the transmission line. While this behavior had been theoretically predicted by our co-author Dr. Stan Williams, this is the first confirmation of its existence.”

These findings may be critical in the future of computing, which is driving an increasing demand for energy use. Data centers are anticipated to use 8% of United States power by 2030, and artificial intelligence could dramatically increase that demand. In the long term, it is a step toward understanding dynamic materials and using biological inspiration to promote more efficient computing.

We essentially harness internal instabilities in the material, which continue strengthening an electronic pulse as it passes along the transmission line.

This research is supported by the Department of Energy, through the Reconfigurable Electronic Materials Inspired by Nonlinear Neuron Dynamic (REMIND) Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC).

“I first had the idea for an edge of chaos active transmission line 12 years ago,” said Dr. Stan Williams, a co-author on the study, the director of REMIND, and professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Texas A&M. “To make it an experimental reality required the resources, expertise and teamwork of REMIND.”

The REMIND EFRC, established in 2022, seeks to develop foundational scientific knowledge underpinning the function of massively reconfigurable computing architectures that approach fundamental limits of energy efficiency and speed, enabling real-time learning and embedded intelligence emulative of specific neuronal and synaptic functions of the human brain.

“The Department of Energy EFRC program is distinctive in its nature and has allowed the REMIND to swing for the fences and work on some of the grand challenges in modern computing,” said Dr. Sarbajit Banerjee, associate director of the REMIND EFRC and professor in the Artie Mcferrin Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. “This work exemplifies the power of collaborative research and Texas A&M’s distinctive national lab partnerships.”

Other contributing members of the EFRC include Jenny Chong, a master’s student in Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M, who helped develop a simulation to understand the phenomenon and designed transmission lines that better amplify signals, as well as researchers Dr. Suhas Kumar, Dr. Elliot Fuller, and Dr. Alec Talin from Sandia National Lab – Livermore. This work was performed in collaboration with the research group of Dr. Eric Pop at Stanford University.
