How long is the flight to New Zealand from the UK?

Planning a trip to New Zealand from the UK? We’re not going to beat around the bush here. The flight from the UK & Europe to New Zealand is one of the longest air trips in the world. In fact, you’ll need at least two flights to make it here. But don’t let that put you off. The trip is worth every minute. Don’t believe us? Almost 200,000 visitors make the trip every year from the UK, which is fantastic, we love making lots of new British friends on our tours every season. What’s more interesting is that, according to Tourism New Zealand, half of British visitors will have already visited at least once before.

That tells us that we’ve not only got a wonderful country to show off but the flight times are not much of a deterrent to visitors. Flying is a more comfortable experience these days anyway. And we believe it’s getting better every year. Today’s modern, fast aircraft with excellent in-flight entertainment systems make the whole journey a pleasant experience.

Flight times to New Zealand from the UK and Major European Cities

How to handle the flights.

There are a few ways of making the trip to New Zealand more pleasant.

Transit Stopovers – Get me to NZ now!

One option is to fly with the minimum stopover so you have 12-16 hours of waking time on the plane and 8 hours of sleep time. The more you can sleep the better, as it will help you get over your jet lag. Watch a couple of movies, read a book but don’t forget to move around and stretch during the wake times. On long-haul flights, there are a few places near the back of the aircraft where you can stretch your shoulders and legs and move around. This is important to help keep the blood circulating but also to help your body rest and sleep later on.

Short Stopovers – Let me off this plane so I can explore a new city!

The second option is to plan a stopover and break up the journey. Short stopovers of 12 hours are great for getting some vertical time at a hotel and also for stretching your legs. Some people like to explore a city for the full day and then return to the aircraft ready to snooze for the remaining journey. A full 24 hours or more of stopover time will give you the best of both. Obviously, this adds an extra day to your journey but for many people, breaking up the journey like this can reduce the jet lag effects. So, in effect, there’s no time lost. Longer stopovers are also great for seeing a new city for free.

If you can work it into your itinerary, even 12 hours is enough to see parts of wonderful cities in Asia and the US.

Let’s look at your options for flying from Europe to our little islands on the other side of the world.

Our favourite stopover cities

From the UK (and almost anywhere in Europe) you can fly to New Zealand via Asia or the US. The Asia route is shorter and more popular. The further south and east you go in Europe the shorter the trip to New Zealand via this part of the world.

A great option from London (or most of the other cities on the list below) is to fly via Dubai. Most London-Dubai flights leave in the evening time so you can snooze on the plane. When you arrive in Dubai early the next day you’ll be ready for a day’s adventure in the city.

Emirates Airways operate one of the longest flights in the world from Dubai airport. At 16 hours from Dubai to Auckland it’s currently the world’s longest commercial flight but will soon be beaten by the upcoming London to Perth direct route operate by Qantas. Dubai is not for everyone but it certainly has the wow factor. The world’s tallest building, mega-rich jet setters, the world’s largest man-made island, and the 5th largest mall in the world are all here. The summer months (June – August) can be quite hot in Dubai but winter months (Dec-Feb) are pleasant and temperatures sit around 20C. Every building has air conditioning and there are plenty of places to escape the heat.

You can also fly from London to Auckland via Bangkok, one of the world’s most exciting cities. Bangkok is exactly halfway between both cities and is an excellent stopover choice. Flight times are 11 and a half hours on each leg. Stopover times can be as little as 2 hours but Bangkok is an easy city to navigate and a great introduction to Asia so we’d recommend spending a few days here if you can. It’s a safe city, the people are friendly and the food is amazing. Thai Airways, Air New Zealand, Emirates, and British Airways are some of the airlines that fly to all three cities.

Another city on the stopover list and one that we’ll put near the top of our must-see-cities list is Singapore. The city-state at the bottom of Malaysia is one of the world’s best food destinations. Singapore a melting pot of cultures, mostly from Asia but there is a very large non-Asian expat community here. Think of the city as an easy entry to Asia. If you’ve never been to Asia this is a good (if not totally representative) introduction. Check out the truly beautiful Supertree grove, the Marina Bay Sands hotel, and the preserved colonial architecture. As one of the world’s safest cities, Singapore is perfect for a short stopover to relax and break up a long journey.

Hong Kong is another Air New Zealand stopover more or less halfway between Europe and New Zealand. A thoroughly modern city with plenty of history stuffed into every corner, Hong Kong is one of the most interesting cities in Asia. Land is hard to come by here so naturally, rent is high for those that live in the city. But you don’t have to worry about that as a tourist. Hotel rates are reasonable enough so you can enjoy the city without the high cost of living there. Try the amazing food (we recommend Dim Sum), the tram up to Victoria Peak, and the Star Ferry passenger trip over to Kowloon. You can even visit the island of Macau if you’re staying any longer than a day. Hong Kong is small but there is a lot packed into this little space.

A less direct route between Europe and New Zealand takes you to Tokyo, the capital of Japan and the world’s biggest city. Tokyo is not as expensive as many people think and it can be quite affordable for short trips. The city offers many attractions and places of cultural interest. Japanese culture is fascinating and Tokyo is ground zero for everything new, exciting, and wacky in Japan. Take time to visit the beautiful gardens, shrines, and public squares that are very well preserved and open to visitors.

Air New Zealand operates a codeshare from the UK to New Zealand via the US. The stopover city is Los Angeles and what a great city to explore! This is especially true if it’s your first time in that part of the world. LA never ceases to amaze. Note that flying via the United States adds on another 6 hours total journey time so it’s not the best choice if you’re in a hurry.

What to expect when you arrive in New Zealand

Temperature wise, New Zealand is similar to northern Europe (excluding the Scandinavian countries). But the biggest change is the seasons. Down south the seasons reverse so if you’re leaving Europe in the cold of December pack your shorts and sun hat. At that time of year expect (mostly) fine weather in New Zealand. But if you visit New Zealand in July or August we suggest you bring a warm jacket, especially if you’re visiting the South Island. You won’t experience snowfall in Auckland’s milder climate but Queenstown, Christchurch and other major cities of the South Island can get a lot of snow in winter.

It might take a little getting used to the slower pace of life here, particularly if you live in a major city like London, Paris, or Berlin. But it should be a welcome change from the hectic pace of the big city. We Kiwis are a laid back bunch and we’d rather stop to chat than hurry on to our next appointment. There’s no rush and everything always works out in the end. You’ll get used to it.

If you’re coming from the UK or Ireland and you plan on driving a vehicle you’ll feel right at home. We drive on the left. Check out our guide to driving in New Zealand.

Why New Zealand is worth the trip

Considering the long flight, the change in seasons, and the cost, why come all this way to visit the other side of the world?

New Zealand was one of the last places on earth discovered by man. It’s a living breathing natural wonder with a small population of friendly people and even more friendly animals. The geography of the country means that there are several different climates with beaches and snow-capped mountains within hours of each other. The possibilities for outdoor activities are endless and the tourist services based around the activities are some of the best in the world.

With a world-class cuisine, wine and coffee culture, a safe and pleasant environment for travelling, and some of the friendliest people on earth, New Zealand is worth the trip. Just ask the almost 4 million visitors that come to these shores every year. Take our advice and make the most of your journey down under. Take in the highlights of a world-class city en route to New Zealand and avail of the opportunities to catch up on some reading, movies, or relaxation time.

Travel time from London to New Zealand

How long does it really take to fly from London to New Zealand? Here's a sample itinerary for a commercial flight plan. If you want to know the total travel time to reach New Zealand, you need to include time at the airports. Eventually, you'll be able to customize this itinerary to select other nearby airports and choose your preferred airline.

Tuesday, 5:22 pm :  start in London drive for about 1 hour most airlines recommend you get to the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight, so arrive by 7:30 pm at the latest

7:05 pm :  get your boarding pass and go through TSA security allow enough time for long security lines during busy travel seasons or holidays, and prepare for the wait time

8:05 pm :  arrive at the gate once you're ready to board, you can get something to eat in the airport or just relax near the gate

8:35 pm :  prepare for boarding check your boarding pass for your group number or listen to the gate agent as they announce boarding, some airlines require you to be in the boarding area 10-15 minutes before departure or risk losing your seat

8:50 pm :  board flight you can search for other airlines that fly this route

9:00 pm :  this is your scheduled departure time but remember flights can be delayed, so take that into account it takes the plane an average of 15 minutes to taxi to the runway

9:15 pm :  wheels up! take-off from LGW fly for about 24 hours in the air

Thursday, 10:03 am (local time) :   Wellington International (WLG) New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of London so the time in London is actually 9:03 pm technically you arrive 2 days after you left taxi on the runway for an average of 15 minutes to the gate

10:18 am (local time) :  arrive at the gate at WLG deboard the plane, and claim any baggage if you're renting a car, check if you need to take a shuttle to car rental agency, otherwise you can ride in a cab, limo, or Uber for about 2.5 hours to your destination

12:42 pm (local time) :  arrive in New Zealand

Now finally, let's look at an example flight from LGW to WLG and figure out how long it would take to fly including take-off and landing, and time to taxi on the runway.

So now we can finally get an idea of the total travel time from London to New Zealand including time spent getting to/from the airports, an estimated wait time of 2 hours at the airport for TSA security lines and waiting at the gate, and the actual flight itself.

Total travel time: 29 hours

How far is New Zealand from London? Here's the quick answer if you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line.

Flight distance: 11,654 miles or 18755 km

Flight time: 23 hours, 48 minutes

Compare this to a whole day of commercial travel with the airports and waiting in line for security, which ends up taking a total of 30 hours, 20 minutes .

Flying private is roughly 1.3x faster , and saves you about 7.5 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

This is a fairly long flight, so unless you have a Gulfstream G650 or your own Boeing or Airbus, you might be booking a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. The flight itinerary at the top of the page takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

The most common route is LGW to WLG, so that's what we used in the sample itinerary. However, you may want to explore travel alternatives, you could try one of these routes:

  • LHR to WLG London Heathrow to Wellington International
  • LTN to WLG London Luton to Wellington International
  • STN to WLG London Stansted to Wellington International
  • LGW to WLG London Gatwick to Wellington International
  • BQH to WLG Biggin Hill to Wellington International
  • LCY to WLG London City to Wellington International

The best time to go to New Zealand

Journeying to New Zealand and exploring Aotearoa is a good choice any time of the year – but your experience will vary depending on what season you choose to visit.

During summer, you can enjoy a southern hemisphere adventure by hiking New Zealand 's Great Walks and partying at the year's best music festivals, while the more affordable months of autumn lend themselves to RV vacations. Winter is the time to combine snow sports with urban experiences, while spring marks the arrival of flavor-packed festivals showcasing local beer, wine and seafood.

Here's our guide to the best time to visit New Zealand.

December to February is the best time for outdoor activities and festivals

Summer in New Zealand means busy beaches , (usually) good weather for hiking (known locally as "tramping") and leisurely cricket matches. On the festival front, highlights include Gisborne ’s Rhythm & Vines and Wanaka ’s Rhythm & Alps , two DJ and dance music multi-day events. In February, Napier is enlivened with a celebration of all things art deco, while Splore attracts Aucklanders for three days of Burning Man-inspired art, music and dance. Eating and drinking exceptionally well is the focus at the Marlborough Wine & Food Festival . Booking ahead for the most popular festivals is vital – both to score event tickets and secure accommodation.

Summer school holidays from mid-December to early February increase accommodation prices for hotels, motels and holiday parks. Try and book ahead, especially across the Christmas and New Year periods, when popular North Island beach resort towns like Tauranga ’s Mt Maunganui and Whitianga are packed with Kiwi families and revelers. Waitangi Day, New Zealand’s national day, is celebrated on February 6.

If you’ve seen New Zealand’s wild lupin flowers flooding your social feeds, December to February is the best time to view these colorful blooms around Central Otago and the Mackenzie Country. Note that some areas of the South Island (especially around Lake Tekapo, where they once flourished on the shore) are attempting to eradicate the spread of the invasive species.

March to May means more festivals and good-value road-tripping

Transitioning from late summer to a southern hemisphere autumn (fall), March to May in New Zealand offers cool but pleasant weather, and a warmish ocean that’s still okay for swimming and watersports – especially at North Island beaches around March and April.

With often settled and drier weather in most regions, it’s a great time to explore Aotearoa. Due to fewer Kiwis traveling (the exception being around Easter, when kids are out of school for two weeks) visitors can expect better value accommodation and shorter lines at key attractions . There’s also less traffic for road trips from Auckland to the Bay of Islands and the Coromandel Peninsula , or for motor home journeys on the most popular routes in the South Island.

Popular March festivals include WOMAD NZ ( New Plymouth ’s annual celebration of global beats and world music) and the quirky Wildfoods Festival . The latter, held in the South Island town of Hokitika, is where you can sample local beer, venison and eel, alongside more challenging dishes such as lamb’s testicles and fried locusts. At Auckland’s Pasifika festival, also in March, vibrant music and dance from Auckland’s Pacific Island communities are paired with food from Samoa, Tonga, Niue and the Cook Islands.

June to August is the best time for city breaks and snow sports

Popular summer destinations such as Golden Bay , the Coromandel Peninsula  and the Bay of Islands will be very quiet during the cooler months of June to August. In these areas, many tourist-oriented businesses close down for the winter. It’s also not the best time to embark on many of the country’s Great Walks, with challenging and often dangerous conditions on alpine and sub-alpine tracks in the South Island and Tongariro National Park. It is, however, usually a good time to experience the Abel Tasman Coast Track . Wrap up warmly for cool mornings, but look forward to blue-sky conditions later in the day.

The snow sports season also kicks off at this time of year, especially around Queenstown and Wanaka in the South Island. Booking ahead for accommodation is recommended, particularly during another set of school holidays in July. Note that skiing in New Zealand is increasingly popular for Australian families, so it’s also worth checking when Australian school holidays fall.

In New Zealand’s cities, shorter days and longer nights mean there is a focus on indoor events. Wellington comes alive in August with the craft beer and culinary combination of Beervana and Wellington on a Plate (WOAP) , while the historic South Island town of Oamaru is enlivened by the quirky Steampunk festival in June. Highlights of winter in Auckland include Elemental , the city’s annual July and August festival focused on arts and culinary events. Restaurant Month in Auckland is a great opportunity for discounted dining at some of the city’s best eateries.

First inaugurated as a national public holiday in 2022, Matariki is a celebration of the Māori New Year. The actual date varies depending on the lunar calendar, but incorporates a Friday holiday weekend around late June or early July. Matariki events and cultural celebrations are becoming increasingly popular throughout New Zealand.

Winter is also one of the best times to experience New Zealand’s Dark Sky Sanctuaries, thanks to clearer skies and longer nights. Popular destinations for stargazing include Aotea/Great Barrier Island off the coast of Auckland, and the South Island’s Mackenzie Country.

September to November is the best time for hiking and foodie festivals

A spring rain shower is never far away from September to November, so definitely pack a lightweight waterproof jacket. New Zealand’s shoulder season usually offers better accommodation prices, although another two-week burst of school holidays in September can impact demand and pricing for hotels and motels.

The snowsports season largely concludes around early October, meaning October and November can be a good time to visit Queenstown or Wanaka, especially for mountain biking amid still cooler weather. New Zealand’s Great Walks hiking season also kicks off in late October and runs through until April. Bookings to secure trail access and hut accommodation can be made on the Department of Conservation (DOC)’s website , usually from May. It’s essential to book ahead for popular experiences including the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler Tracks.

Spring festivals include Crayfest Kaikōura , pairing everyone’s favorite crustacean (crayfish) with local wine and craft beer. It’s also a good time to incorporate some whale watching at Kaikōura . Toast Martinborough attracts Wellingtonians across the Remutaka Range for a one-day November pinot noir-fuelled celebration of food, wine and music.

Awesome as always. I wish though the cabin for premium was upgraded.... Same old sane old :(

When boarding, after business class should be premium economy, but economy class already lined-up at the gate blocking premium economy to board. Singapore airline crew should done a better job to organize this chaos :( Thank you.

Every thing was fine. Some ild classical Hindi movies should be add

The singapore airline now compared before covid, I like the service before covid. SQ was the best of all airlines but now I am going to look for different airline if I am travelling in asia.

Perfect experience from boarding through to leaving the flight, comfortable and personalised service from all staff, highly recommended

Transfer within the same terminal and lots of facilities at the airport.

I did not like anything. Flight experience was bad overall.

All was good. Emirates should restart allowing fast track immigration for business class at Manchester airport. Saves a bit of time

Flight got canceled without any prior information and it caused lot of trouble

My Experience was ok. But the gentleman next to me vaped the whole flight and the attendants did nothing, whether they were aware, I’m not sure.

Checkin and boarding staff at Delhi Airport is not cooperative with passengers Their behavior very humiliating . They don’t allow Lap top bag and Ladies’ purse/vanity bag which most of the airlines allow besides cabin baggage and check in baggages. They try to charge extra payment on the pretext of small variations which normally other Airlines staff don’t do. Airline staff should be courteous & cooperative but check in staff of Emirates Airline at Delhi was not so at all.

Superb experience. I hope they bring back the fast track option at Heathrow immigration.

Newly reconfigured 380 I assume. Has a new ife with usb c ports and Bluetooth connections

Had the salad which tasted awfully spat it out but still got food poisoning 1 after running to toilet crew would not let me sit near toilets I was stuck in window seat

I liked theAVML food. Taste was alright and quantity was enough. Sometimes during the flight I felt that the smell from toilet was coming to the cabin

Food was not eadable. Testless and not apealing. order for indian vegitarian, recived spice less. combination of main course and side iteams are far away from traditonal food, serve less iteams. , but eadoble. Thanks

Overall emirates continues to amaze me with their. Awesome service . I had shifted away from emirates , because I lost luggage and watch in emirates in 2019 that drifted me away from this airline , but I am willing to give it try

Cabin crew on our flight showed lack of any customer service gruff and acting annoyed if you asked anything and I mean anything Example a man on the seat over dropped his beer on my husbands blanket We asked if we could switch out blankets cabin crew Said. No we don’t have any extras OK well can you take the wet one Cabin crew looked disgusted and annoyed Took it no OK or yes just a growl

Quick flight. But cabin crew were very noisy and talking too much, especially when we were seated at the back of the plane trying to sleep through the night .

My ticket was for Premium Economy and all the seats were taken, I was placed in Economy class and I’m looking for a refund.

Unfortunately delayed 2 hrs due to faulty tyre.. which had to be changed, but better safe than sorry.

The delay was an issue. Other than that. Every thing good

Hi vergin Atlantic service was good but the flight ticket agent travel up charge me extra 57 pounds as a airport charges, actually I refuse to pay but they say if I not pay £57 then they say you will not be able to travel from Heathrow to goa ,so for me there was no option and it was just 3 day before my departure so i paid, so please look in to the matter. And I have a receipt of £ 57 as well .thanks

Staff didn’t check cabin well for landing seemed more interested in chatting to each other. Food was poor and differed from pre order.

We were in the last group to be called to the flight - which was 30 minutes late taking off. While we were lucky enough to have been given bulkhead seats (due to a medical condition I’d told them about beforehand) the seats weren’t particularly comfortable. A crying baby for the whole trip made things worse, so the crew managed very well with coping. The final thing I’d say was that there wasn’t enough food served during the flight.

Very good. Glad we had Premium for the flight out.

We flew Upper Class from London to The Turks and Caicos. Check in was amazing. Our ldriver too us directly to a special entrance to terminal 3. It took 10 minutes to check in and clear customs. Amazing! The VA lounge is large and comfortable. Boarding the flight was easy and without a wait. The crew was excellent. But the seats were awful, strange and uncomfortable. Having a comfortable flat bed seat is the reason we pays 1000s extra. The VA 787 uses a reverse herringbone configuration. Look it up. You have your back to the window and are facing the aisle with no privacy. Turning the seat into a bed requires assistance from the crew so not very spontaneous. . The food was ok. A bit tasteless and meager portions. Had to pay for WiFi. I believe VA has other configuration on their dream airbus flights. Lots of stuff about all this on YouTube where you can see what I have been describing. I can not recommend taking VA on a long flight with these seats.

I think it’s time that somebody set a standard for the temperature in the cabins. I would rather it be colder than anybody that wants to have a blanket have a blanket to keep it so warm at times is unbearable and quite uncomfortable. That’s the only thing I would add.

For the price we paid, we had a really good flight. The seats and bed (business class) was extremely comfortable. I have no complaints. The crew were very attentive and helpful. They spoke English and there were no misunderstanding although their English wasn’t perfect or fluent. You will never go hungry as there was ample food and drinks but their food for mediocre. The entertainment was limited to older movies and the wifi didn’t allow you to access some Social media. Apart from the above, it was a very pleasant flight. Would highly recommend them.

Good airline for the price. The Air stewardess are great, nothing is to much trouble. Will use again.

Great staff and food. Seats pretty uncomfortable but plenty of legroom. Entertainment system outdated.

The flight was cancelled without any reason. But the next flight to Shanghai has to be cancelled to pay penalty.

Gatwick London-Shanghai -Bangkok.. Would have liked entertainment screens, but I know these planes are not that new. Cheap flights at the time of booking, Emirates wanted double so you get what you paid for. I would fly again with them, but if Emirates was the same price I would go with them.

How do you run out of beer after one hour of a twelve hour flight?!

Couldn’t fly since they wouldn’t issue a boarding ticket. Something to do with not taking the departing flight since it was cancelled due to weather. No notice or anything about the trip being invalid. The app made it seem like I was all good for it. Never trusting travel agency

I will never fly through China again. Maybe it was the mandatory retinal scan just to transfer to another flight or the complete set of fingerprints they require. There are many better and inexpensive flights to Asia if you look.

A lot of value considering the cheap ticket prices. All meals served were Chinese food. Would fly them again considering the ticket was half the price of any others

I realize it almost has to happen, but giving up one carry-on is difficult. With the standard one in the overhead and one under the seat, I believe it could have worked. We chose British Airways because of its baggage allowance, but giving up on carry-on is a major negative in choosing BA in the future. Again, it is understandable. Everything else is top notch. Thank you.

Timely service. London city is easy to get in and out once you reach the airport

The flight was excellent with very attentive and friendly staff. Food was delicious and amenities were nice. Only trouble was the 1 hour and 20 mins I had to wait for luggage. Guess there was an electrical problem at the gate.

Economy class has no legroom so if you have the money worth to upgrade! Food was absolutely horrible! The crew was super nice!!!!!

the crew was very friendly. The check in staff was a different story. I was flying club and when I arrived at the check in desk the two people behind the desk waved me to another person. They were too busy chatting. This person checked me in and said to walk to the gate immediately. At it was 1h12mins before the flight, I asked if I could use the lounge. No, he said. Straight to the gate. Obviously it was crowded, uncomfortable and irritating as the flight was delayed and a herd of people were standing in front of the gate, hoping to get in first

Flight canceled two hours beforehand, BA reticketed us so that we would have had to leave from Edinburgh instead of Glasgow, where we were already at the airport. We would have arrived in Boston too late to get home to Vermont. Instead with some pressure we were reticketed from Glasgow on Lufthansa, which avoided Heathrow, a great benefit after our horrible experience at Heathrow when we arrived in Britain three weeks earlier. (Kayak assebled an itierary that did not leave adeqate time for the connection at Heathrow, where thousands of people were trying tio get through inadequate and badly staffed security and staff did not know the slightest details about where and which lines we should get in.) The British Airways travel experience is not to be recommended these days.

One of the flight was cancelled. My experience was poor.

THe flight, crew and service was good. The only problem was the long delay and that the Captain's announcment about the delay was only in English on a BUDapest Hungary flight.: And no one spoke Hungarian from the flight crew.

Horrible check in process. The app was unusable and the website very confusing

The food could have been better, but that is secondary. I felt safe.
