Passport Travel Tips

Safeguard your Passport. You must present your passport to the Customs and Border Protection officer upon arrival in the United States. Carry your passport—do not pack it in your checked luggage. We recommend you make a copy of your passport and put it in a separate place as a safeguard in case it is lost or stolen.

Traveling with Children. All children, including infants, must have their own passport or Trusted Traveler Program for U.S. entry. Carry documents for traveling with minor children.

  • If you are escorting a minor child without the parents, have a letter from both parents indicating that you have permission to travel with the minor.
  • If the child is accompanied by only one parent, the parent should have a note from the child's other parent. For example, "I acknowledge that my wife/ husband is traveling out of the country with my son/ daughter. He/She/ has my permission to do so."
  • If a single parent has sole custody, a copy of the court custody document can replace a letter from the other parent.

Western Hemispheric Travel Initiative

The Western Hemispheric Travel Initiative (WHTI) allows six types of acceptable documents required for travel in the Western Hemisphere, i.e., Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central and South America.

The goal of WHTI is to strengthen border security while facilitating entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate international travelers. WHTI makes the traveling process more efficient and convenient.

Introduction

Applying for a US passport can be an exciting and important step for travelers who are planning international trips. A passport serves as an official identification document and is required for entry into most countries. Whether you’re a first-time applicant or need to renew your existing passport, it’s essential to fill out the passport application correctly and provide all the required documents to ensure a smooth process.

In this guide, we will walk you through the process of filling out a US passport application form and provide helpful tips to ensure your application is completed accurately and efficiently.

Before we begin, it’s important to note that in order to apply for a passport, you must be a US citizen or a non-citizen national with a valid reason for obtaining a US passport. Additionally, if you are under the age of 16, the process and requirements for applying may vary.

Now, let’s dive into the details of what you need to know to successfully complete your US passport application.

Required Documents

When filling out a US passport application, you will need to gather several documents to establish your identity, citizenship, and eligibility for a passport. Having the necessary documents ready before starting the application process will help ensure a seamless experience. Here are the primary documents you will need:

  • Proof of US Citizenship: You will be required to provide an original or certified copy of your birth certificate, previous US passport, or a certificate of naturalization or citizenship.
  • Proof of Identity: A valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or state ID card, is necessary to establish your identity.
  • Passport Photo: One recent color passport photo is required. The photo must meet specific requirements in terms of size, background color, and facial expression. It’s vital to carefully follow the guidelines provided by the passport agency to avoid delays.
  • Passport Application Form: You can download and print the passport application form from the official website of the US Department of State. The form must be completed accurately and without any errors. Be sure to use black ink and write legibly.
  • Proof of Name Change (if applicable): If your name has changed since your previous passport or if the name on your citizenship document does not match your current name, you will need to provide legal documentation that proves the name change, such as a marriage certificate or court order.

It’s essential to note that these are the general requirements for a US passport application. Additional documents may be required in specific circumstances, such as if you are applying for a passport for a minor, or if you are applying for a passport for the first time as an adult. It’s advisable to consult the official website of the US Department of State or contact your local passport agency for precise information regarding your specific situation.

Ensuring that you have all the necessary documents before you begin filling out your passport application will save you time and prevent any potential delays or complications in the process.

Personal Information

When filling out the US passport application, you will need to provide accurate and detailed personal information. This includes your full name, date of birth, place of birth, gender, and social security number. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Full Name: Enter your full legal name as it appears on your citizenship document or proof of identity. Make sure to include your middle name if applicable.
  • Date of Birth: Provide your exact date of birth in the requested format (month/day/year).
  • Place of Birth: Indicate the city, state, and country where you were born. If you were born outside the US, specify the name of the country.
  • Gender: Select your gender from the provided options.
  • Social Security Number: While providing your social security number is not mandatory, it can help expedite the application process. If you choose not to provide it, be aware that it may cause delays.

It’s crucial to ensure the accuracy of your personal information when filling out the application form. Any mistakes or inconsistencies may result in processing delays or the rejection of your application. Double-check your answers before submitting the form and make sure the information matches the supporting documents you will be submitting.

Additionally, if you have had a name change due to marriage, divorce, or other legal reasons, you will need to provide supporting documentation to validate the change. This may include a marriage certificate or court order.

Remember, providing truthful and accurate personal information is crucial when applying for a US passport. Any false statements or omissions can result in severe penalties and potential legal repercussions.

Passport Photo

One of the essential elements of the US passport application is the passport photo. The photo serves as a visual representation of the applicant and must adhere to specific requirements set by the US Department of State. Here’s what you need to know about the passport photo:

  • Size and Dimensions: The passport photo must be 2×2 inches (5×5 cm) in size. The image of your face within the photo should measure between 1 and 1 3/8 inches (2.5 and 3.5 cm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
  • Background and Lighting: The background should be plain white or off-white, with no patterns or shadows. The lighting should be even and without any harsh glares or shadows on your face.
  • Facial Expression and Appearance: The photo should have a neutral facial expression, with both eyes open and looking directly at the camera. Your face should be fully visible, with a natural skin tone and no red-eye or glare caused by eyeglasses.
  • Clothing and Accessories: It’s recommended to wear normal everyday clothing in your passport photo. Avoid wearing uniforms, hats, or head coverings (unless for religious or medical reasons). If you wear prescription glasses, ensure that there is no glare and that your eyes are clearly visible.

When getting your passport photo taken, it’s advisable to go to a professional photography studio or a passport photo service provider who is familiar with the requirements. They will ensure that your photo meets all the necessary specifications. Avoid using smartphone selfies or home-printed photos, as they may not meet the required standards, leading to delays or rejection of your application.

Once you have obtained a compliant passport photo, affix it to your completed application form. Avoid bending or damaging the photo in any way; otherwise, it may not be accepted. It’s also a good idea to keep spare copies of your passport photos in case they are needed for future applications or renewals.

Remember, a high-quality and accurate passport photo is essential for the successful processing of your US passport application. Take the time to ensure that your photo meets all the specified requirements before submitting your application.

Additional Information

When filling out your US passport application, there may be additional information that you need to provide depending on your specific circumstances. Here are some common scenarios that may require extra details:

  • Emergency Contact: You may be asked to provide the contact information of a person to be contacted in case of an emergency during your travels. It’s essential to choose someone who is readily available and can be reached easily.
  • Travel Plans: You may be required to provide information about your upcoming travel plans, including the expected dates of travel and destinations visited. This information helps authorities determine the validity period of your passport and ensure sufficient time for processing.
  • Previous Passport: If you are renewing your passport, you will need to submit your previous passport along with the application. This helps establish your identity and citizenship.
  • Expedited Processing: If you require your passport urgently due to travel plans or exceptional circumstances, you may be eligible for expedited processing. In such cases, you may need to provide additional documentation to support your request for expedited service.
  • Passport Book vs. Passport Card: You have the option to apply for either a passport book or a passport card. The passport book allows for international travel by air, while the passport card is valid for land and sea crossings between the US, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. Choose the one that suits your travel needs.

It’s important to carefully read and understand the instructions provided on the passport application form and online resources. These resources will guide you on any additional information or documentation required for your specific circumstances.

Remember, providing accurate and complete information is crucial for the processing of your application. Any discrepancies or false information may result in delays, penalties, or even the rejection of your application.

Take your time to thoroughly review the application form and ensure that you have included all the necessary details before submitting your application. This will help ensure a smooth processing experience and expedite the issuance of your US passport.

Parental Consent (if applicable)

When applying for a US passport for a minor (under the age of 16), parental consent is usually required. This ensures that both parents or legal guardians are aware of and grant permission for the child to obtain a passport. Here’s what you need to know about parental consent:

  • Both Parents’ or Legal Guardians’ Consent: In most cases, both parents or legal guardians must provide consent for the issuance of a passport to a minor. This is to prevent any potential unauthorized travel or child abduction. If one parent has sole legal custody, they must provide evidence of such authority.
  • Consent Forms: To grant consent, parents or legal guardians must fill out the appropriate consent form, known as Form DS-3053. This form can be found on the official website of the US Department of State. It must be completed, notarized, and submitted along with the passport application.
  • Special Circumstances: There may be situations where one parent is unable to provide consent due to various reasons, such as being overseas or having an estranged relationship. In such cases, additional documentation, such as a court order granting sole legal custody or a death certificate, may be required.
  • Applying with One Parent’s Consent: If only one parent is able to provide consent or in cases where sole custody has been granted, additional documentation must be submitted. This includes the parent’s valid ID, evidence of sole legal custody, and a written statement explaining the circumstances for the absence of the other parent’s consent.

It’s important to note that parental consent requirements may vary based on the specific situation, legal agreements, or court orders. It’s advisable to consult the official resources or contact your local passport agency for detailed instructions regarding your unique circumstances.

Ensuring that all necessary parental consent forms and supporting documentation are correctly completed and submitted will prevent delays in the processing of your child’s passport application. Additionally, it’s crucial to communicate and coordinate with the other parent or legal guardian to obtain consent and avoid any potential complications.

Remember, parental consent is a vital aspect when applying for a US passport for a minor. It serves as an added layer of security and ensures that both parents have given their approval for the child to travel internationally.

Declaration and Signature

At the end of the US passport application form, you will find a declaration and signature section that requires your attention. This section is crucial as it signifies your agreement to the information provided and confirms the accuracy of the details. Here’s what you need to know about the declaration and signature:

  • Read the Declaration: Take the time to carefully read the declaration statement before signing. It outlines the legal implications of providing false information on the application form.
  • Signature: Sign your full name in the designated space on the application form. Use black ink and ensure that your signature matches the one on your identification documents.
  • Date: Write the current date next to your signature to indicate when you signed the form.

By signing the declaration, you are confirming that the information provided on the application form is true and accurate to the best of your knowledge. It’s crucial to review all the information on the form before signing to ensure that there are no errors or omissions.

It’s important to note that for minors under the age of 16, their application must also be signed by both parents or legal guardians. This ensures that everyone involved is aware of and consents to the issuance of the passport for the child.

Take your time when reviewing the application form, ensuring that all fields are completed correctly, and check for any missing information or mistakes. Any inaccuracies or incomplete sections may result in delays or the rejection of your application.

Once you have signed the declaration and completed the necessary sections of the application form, it’s crucial to keep a copy for your own records. This will serve as a reference point and proof of the information provided in case of any future inquiries or updates.

Remember, your signature signifies your commitment to providing accurate information and complying with the legal requirements of applying for a US passport. Take this step seriously to ensure a smooth processing experience and the issuance of your passport.

Submitting the Application

After completing the US passport application form and ensuring that all the necessary documents are gathered, it’s time to submit your application. Here’s what you need to know about the submission process:

  • Check for Accuracy: Before submitting your application, carefully review all the information provided. Check for any errors or missing details to ensure the accuracy of your application.
  • Make Copies: It’s advisable to make copies of all the documents you are submitting, including the completed application form, supporting identification, and proof of citizenship. These copies will serve as backups in case any issues arise during the application process.
  • Payment of Fees: Ensure that you have the necessary payment for the passport application fees. The fees vary depending on factors such as the type of passport, processing time, and any additional services requested. Payment can typically be made through credit or debit card, check, or money order.
  • Submit Application in Person or by Mail: You can submit your application in person at an authorized acceptance facility, such as a post office, courthouse, or public library. Some passport agencies also offer expedited processing services. Alternatively, you can also mail your application to the address specified on the official website of the US Department of State.
  • Track Your Application: After submitting your application, it’s a good idea to keep track of its progress. The US Department of State provides online tools to track your application and monitor its processing status.

When submitting your application in person, make sure to bring all the necessary documents, including the originals and copies, as well as the payment for the fees. Follow the instructions provided by the acceptance facility and cooperate with any additional requirements they may have.

If you choose to mail your application, use a secure and traceable mailing service to send your documents. Ensure that you have included all the required forms and supporting documentation to avoid any delays or issues with your application.

Lastly, note that the processing time for passport applications can vary depending on various factors, including the time of year and any additional services requested. It’s advisable to submit your application well in advance of your travel plans to allow for sufficient processing time.

By following these steps and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of your application, you’ll increase the likelihood of a smooth and efficient processing experience.

Application Fees

When applying for a US passport, there are various fees involved, depending on the type of passport, processing time, and additional services requested. Here’s what you need to know about the application fees:

  • Passport Book: The application fee for a passport book for adults (16 years and older) is generally higher than that for minors (under 16 years). The fee covers the cost of processing, issuance, and the passport book itself.
  • Passport Card: The passport card is a wallet-sized alternative to the passport book, valid for land and sea crossings between the US, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. The application fee for a passport card is typically lower than that for a passport book.
  • Expedited Processing: If you need your passport urgently, you can request expedited processing for an additional fee. This expedites the processing time, and your passport will be delivered faster than the standard processing time. However, it’s important to note that expedited processing may not be available in all circumstances.
  • Additional Services: There may be additional services you can request, such as overnight delivery for the return of your passport, or a file search fee if you need to obtain a copy of a previous passport record. Each additional service comes with its own fee.

The specific fees and payment methods can be found on the official website of the US Department of State. It’s important to review the fee schedule and ensure that you have the necessary funds available to cover the costs.

When submitting your passport application, payment can usually be made by credit or debit card, check, or money order. Some acceptance facilities may also accept cash, so it’s advisable to check with the facility in advance to confirm the acceptable payment methods.

It’s important to note that the application fees are non-refundable, even if your application is denied for any reason. Therefore, it’s crucial to carefully review all the requirements, eligibility criteria, and documentation needed to ensure a successful application.

By understanding the application fees and submitting the correct payment, you can ensure that your passport application is processed efficiently and on time.

How to Get a Passport in the U.S.

us travel passport application

  • What You Need to Apply
  • Steps to Apply
  • Tips and Tricks

Tetra Images / Getty Images

A passport is a travel and identification document accepted by governments around the world. You need a passport to enter and return to the United States from most countries, and it's worth getting, even if you don't have any upcoming travel planned. It's usually better to get a passport through the U.S. government and not a commercial passport application agency; even if you need to get a passport fast , they won't speed up the process any more than you can.

What You Need to Apply for a Passport

  • Passport application forms
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship
  • Proof of your identity
  • Two current photographs
  • Your social security number
  • Applicable fee payment method

Steps to Apply for a Passport

Step 1: download and fill out the forms..

The first step requires you to download the relevant U.S. government forms. You can grab a passport application from any U.S. post office or download the passport application forms online and print them out from home.

If printing, note this advice from the government: "The forms...must be printed in black print on white paper. The paper must be 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches, with no holes or perforations, at least medium (20 lb.) weight, and a matte surface. Thermal paper, dye-sublimation paper, special inkjet paper, and other shiny papers are not acceptable."

Once you have the passport application form in hand, start reading the instructions printed on the first and second pages. Complete page three using this information, and then read page four for further details on filling in the form.

Step 2: Gather proof of American citizenship.

Next, you need to gather proof of your American citizenship, in the form of any one of the following, according to the U.S. Department of State.

  • Certified U.S. birth certificate issued by the city, county, or state (not a copy). Call the state's government in which you were born to get an official version with a notary's seal. Know that the birth certificate must list the full name(s) of your parent(s). If you don't have a birth certificate, you can still get a passport.
  • Records of birth abroad if you weren't born in the United States
  • Naturalization certificate
  • Certificate of citizenship

Be prepared to prove your identity with any one of these:

  • Previous U.S. passport (altered or damaged passports are not accepted)
  • Current, valid driver's license
  • Government ID: city, state, or federal
  • Military ID: military and dependents

Step 3: Get passport photos taken.

Get two passport photos taken to submit with your application. In your photos, you should make sure to wear your regular, everyday clothes (no uniforms) and nothing on your head. If you usually wear glasses or other items that alter your appearance, wear them. Look straight ahead and don't smile. You can get your U.S. passport photos taken at the post office—they'll know the drill and requirements. If you get passport photos taken elsewhere, read up first on passport photo requirements to make sure they'll qualify.

Step 5: Pay application fees.

Prepare to pay the application and execution fees; get those dollar amounts online as they change periodically. As of 2021, first-time adult passports cost $165, and adult renewals cost $130. Minor passports for those under age 16 are $135. You can receive expedited processing for an extra $60 plus overnight fees. Check with the location where you'll be applying to find what payment methods are accepted, and then gather the money for payment.

Step 6: Submit your application.

Find the passport office location nearest you (it might just be the post office). Hand in your completed forms, passport photos, and money for the passport. Provide your departure date for your next trip, and you can then expect to receive your U.S. passport in two weeks to two months. For an additional fee of $60 plus overnight delivery fees, you can rush a U.S. passport application, and you may even be able to get a passport on the same day that you apply.

Step 7: Check your application status.

Beginning about a week after you submit your application, you can check your application's status online to see when your passport might arrive.

Tips and Tricks for Passport Applications

  • The U.S. passport fee is $165 if you are 16 and older, and the U.S. passport is good for 10 years.
  • The U.S. passport fee is $135 if you are under 16, and the new passport is good for five years.
  • Some countries require that your passport be valid for six months after you leave that country to return to the U.S. Make sure you apply for a new one while you have plenty of valid months left on it.
  • Remember that you need a passport or other WHTI-compliant document to travel back to the U.S. from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
  • Leave a copy of your passport at home, and email a copy to yourself with other important travel documents. If you lose your passport overseas, having a copy will make getting a temporary or replacement passport far easier.
  • Note that passport books are different than passport cards .

Passport Backlog Eases: Your Questions Answered

Find the solutions to common passport questions about cost, timing and more.

a passport application sign inside a NYC Post Office

Veronica Stoddart,

This year is on track to set a record for the highest demand for passports, according to the U.S. State Department. From October 2022 to September 2023, the State Department issued more than 24 million passport books and cards, the most ever. Passport processing delays were lengthy as a result. Now the State Department said processing times are at pre-pandemic levels.

Amid all the confusion around getting a passport, here are some tips to guide you through the ins and outs of the process.

Passport application and renewal

How can you apply for a passport.

If it’s your first time, you have to apply in person at a  passport acceptance facility .

How   should   you   renew   a   passport?

To renew, mail the  application  and supporting documents (your most recent passport, a photo and passport fees) through the U.S. Postal Service. Make sure you’re  eligible to renew  before you mail in your application.

How long does it take to get and renew a passport?

As of Dec. 18, the State Department reports that  processing time  for routine applications takes six to eight weeks, down from seven to 10 weeks, for new passports and  passport renewals .

Mailing can add up to two weeks for the application to arrive at a passport agency or center and up to two weeks for you to receive your passport.

Expediting a passport

How can you expedite a new passport or renewal.

You can upgrade your passport application from routine to three categories:  expedited , urgent travel or emergency for an additional $60 (on top of the application fee of $130 for a new or renewed passport plus the execution fee of $35 for a new one).

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT

You can also add one- to two-day delivery for $19.53.

  • Expedited:  Choose this  service  if you’re traveling in less than 10 weeks from the date you submit your application. Processing takes two to three weeks, down from three to five weeks (not including mailing time). You can expedite a renewal by mail or a new passport at an acceptance facility such as a post office, clerk of court, public library or other local government office that accepts passport applications.
  • Urgent travel:  Choose this  service  if you are traveling within the expedited service time of two to three weeks. Call 877-487-2778 to make an appointment at a  passport agency or center  within 14 calendar days of your travel date if you have not already applied or within five calendar days if you have already applied (appointments are accepted only by phone). Note: Passport agencies and centers are operated by the State Department and are different from passport acceptance facilities. Appointments are limited and cannot be guaranteed.
  • Emergency:  Choose this  service  if you have a life-or-death emergency that requires travel within three business days. Call 877-487-2778 or 202-647-4000, depending on the day and time, to make an appointment at a passport agency or center and provide proof of the qualifying emergency and proof of travel.

Another option is to use a private passport expediter or courier service. Some of these companies are registered with State Department passport agencies and are allowed to submit expedited passport applications on behalf of customers.  Check the website  for language that says “Authorized/Registered by State Department.”

Holland America Line

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

These companies may charge several hundred dollars for expediting services, or charge for services that are offered for free by the State Department, such as making an appointment and filling out a form. Buyer beware: The State Department may not be able to honor appointments booked via third parties, according to a department spokesperson.

Passport types and options

What is an electronic passport.

An electronic or  e-Passport  contains an electronic chip with the same information that is printed on the passport’s ID page. It provides protection against identity theft and makes it difficult to use an altered or forged passport.

All U.S. passports issued from 2006 to 2022 were e-Passports, distinguished by the international e-Passport symbol on the front cover. Since then, new passports are Next Generation Passports, redesigned to be safer and smarter with enhanced security features, according to a State Department spokesperson.

When should you get a “backup” passport?

A  second passport  is useful in a number of situations. For example, if you plan to visit two foreign destinations within a tight time frame and need visas for both.

There may not be enough time to wait for the first visa to be added to your passport before you need to submit your passport to apply for the second visa.

Travel writer and former  Travel + Leisure  international editor Mark Orwoll discovered this the hard way when he was planning back-to-back trips to countries that both required visas.

When he found out he could get a second passport, he had to pay an expediting service $649 (in addition to the State Department’s $60 expedite fee) to rush it and to facilitate both visas so he could get them on time. “I hated to spend so much money, but the expediter got it for me in a matter of days,” Orwoll says. “Because I travel so much overseas, I decided it was worth it. And besides, it’s pretty cool to have two passports!”

Another reason to have two passports is if a foreign country denies you a visa or entry because your passport has stamps showing travel to certain countries. For example, an Israeli entry or exit stamp will prevent you from entering some Arab countries, such as Kuwait, Lebanon and others. Two passports will allow you to divide your entry stamps.

The second passport will be valid for four years or less, instead of 10 for the original one. You must meet several additional requirements to get it.

Can you add visa pages to a passport?

No. If you need additional visa pages in your passport, you must renew it. If you travel overseas frequently and anticipate needing extra visa pages, apply for a “large book,” which provides 24 extra blank pages for stamps and visas at no extra charge.

Should you keep a photocopy of your passport when you travel?

Yes. Losing your passport on an international trip can be very disrupting. To facilitate getting a replacement, keep a photo of your passport ID page on your cellphone or bring a photocopy with you and store it in a separate place from your passport so you have a record if your passport is lost or stolen, says Kevin Coffey, author of  Traveler Beware! An Undercover Cop’s Guide to Avoiding: Pickpockets, Luggage Theft, & Travel Scams . To get a  replacement , bring your copy to the nearest embassy or consulate, complete a loss report and an application form, show an additional government ID and supply one recent passport photo.

someone filling out a passport application or renewal form

Passport card

What is a passport card, and where can you use it.

A passport card is a wallet-size document that can only be used to reenter the United States at land border crossings and seaports of entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. It provides a less expensive ($30), smaller alternative to the passport book for those who travel frequently to these destinations by land or sea.

Passport cards cannot be used for international travel by air.

To  apply for a passport card , use the same form as applying for a passport book. You can apply for both simultaneously. The processing time for the card is the same as for the book, but cards are only sent via first-class mail.

Editor's note: This article was originally published on Nov. 8. It has been updated to reflect new information.

The fastest and easiest way to get a passport.

Before you start your passport application, the first step is to make sure you're allowed to get a U.S. passport. This means checking if you are a U.S. citizen or a non-citizen national. Here's how you can tell if you qualify:

U.S. Citizenship or Non-Citizen National Status

Who can get a u.s. passport.

To apply for a U.S. passport, you need to be a U.S. citizen or a non-citizen national. Most people get their passport using their U.S. citizenship. This includes people born in the United States and some people born outside the U.S. to American parents.

What is a Non-Citizen National?

Non-citizen national status is less common. This status is for people who were born in American Samoa or Swains Island, which are parts of the United States but don't grant full U.S. citizenship at birth. Non-citizen nationals can still get a U.S. passport, but their status is a bit different from citizens.

Already have a passport?

If you already have a U.S. passport and need to renew it, you're eligible and we've got you covered. Check out our Ultimate U.S. Passport Renewal Guide for step-by-step help and tips to make renewing your passport as easy as possible. This guide is perfect for current passport holders looking for updated information and advice on the renewal process.

Remember: confirming that you're eligible for a U.S. passport is the first important step in the process. Once you know you qualify, you're ready to get your application process started!

When you're ready to apply for a U.S. passport, picking the right form is your next big step. There are different forms depending on if it's your first time applying, if you're renewing, or if you're getting a passport for a child. Let's break down which form you'll need and how to fill it out without any mistakes.

Choosing the Right Passport Application Form

  • First-Time Applicants: Use Form DS-11 . This is for people who have never had a U.S. passport before, kids under 16, and those who got their last passport before they turned 16.
  • Minors: Parents applying for their children under 16 will use Form DS-11 and need to follow special rules , like both parents showing up to the application appointment and completing extra paperwork.

Filling Out the Form Correctly

  • Read Carefully Make sure to read each question carefully before you answer. This helps prevent mistakes that could slow down your application.
  • Black Ink: Use black ink if you're filling out a paper form. This makes it clear and easy to read.

Visit our guide on How to Schedule Your US Passport Appointment Online for a step-by-step walkthrough on making your appointment. This guide will save you time and help make sure you've got everything ready for your visit.

If you need a passport fast , you will need to get an appointment at one of the 26 regional passport agencies located across the country. These appointments can sometimes be challenging to both get and attend depending on when and where you need to go. In these situations, many applicants opt to get help from registered passport expediting services.

Gather the Correct Supporting Documents

Getting together the right documents is a crucial part of your passport application. These documents prove who you are and confirm your eligibility for a U.S. passport.

Here's a rundown of the documents most people will need to provide, along with some special cases to be aware of.

Commonly Required Documents

  • Passport Photo: You'll need a recent photo that meets the strict passport photo requirements .

Paying for your passport is an important step in the application process. There are different fees depending on what you need and how quickly you need it. Understanding these fees can help you plan better and avoid any surprises.

Understanding Passport Fees

  • Standard Fees: These are the basic fees for getting a passport. They vary depending on whether you're applying for a passport book, card, or both, and if it's for an adult or a child.
  • Optional Service Fees: There are other fees for optional services like overnight delivery of your passport or obtaining a file search for missing citizenship documentation.

Payment Methods

You can pay passpot application fees in several ways, including checks, money orders, and, at some locations, credit or debit cards. It's important to check what payment methods are accepted at the place you're applying.

Cost-Effective Planning Tips

  • Choose What You Need: Think about whether you need both a passport book and card or one or the other. The passport card is less expensive but can't be used for most international locations. It also cannot be used for any type of air travel.
  • Budget for Optional Services: Pay careful attention to optional services like overnight delivery or file searches that you may need. These can add up.

By being informed and planning ahead for the different passport fees associated with your application, you can ensure avoid any last-minute stress. Make sure to review the fee structure and budget accordingly for your passport application.

Applying for a U.S. passport involves several important steps: confirming your eligibility, choosing the right application form, gathering necessary supporting documents, and understanding the fees involved.

UK to expand digital travel to more visitors

By April 2025, all visitors who do not need a visa will need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) to travel to the UK.

us travel passport application

The government is taking major steps towards delivering its ambitious aim to digitise the UK border and immigration system and has today set out new implementation dates for the electronic travel authorisation (ETA) scheme.

Everyone wishing to travel to the UK – except British and Irish citizens – will need permission to travel in advance of coming here. This can be either through an ETA or an eVisa.

Today we are confirming that from 27 November 2024, eligible non-Europeans can apply for an ETA and will need an ETA to travel from 8 January 2025. ETAs will then extend to eligible Europeans from 5 March 2025, who will need an ETA to travel from 2 April 2025.

ETAs are digitally linked to a traveller’s passport and ensure more robust security checks are carried out before people begin their journey to the UK, helping to prevent abuse of our immigration system. An ETA costs £10 and permits multiple journeys to the UK for stays of up to 6 months at a time over 2 years or until the holder’s passport expires – whichever is sooner.

From today, information about ETA eligibility is available on GOV.UK . Anyone needing to apply for an ETA will be able to do so through a quick and simple process using the UK ETA app.

Gulf Cooperation Council visitors already need an ETA to travel to the UK.

The introduction of ETAs is in line with the approach many other countries have taken to border security, including the US and Australia.

Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Seema Malhotra, said:

Digitisation enables a smooth experience for the millions of people who pass through the border every year, including the visitors we warmly welcome to the UK who are predicted to contribute over £32 billion to our tourism economy this year. The worldwide expansion of the ETA demonstrates our commitment to enhance security through new technology and embedding a modern immigration system.

People who need a UK visa to live, work or study in the UK are now issued with an eVisa, providing digital proof of immigration status, instead of physical immigration documents which can be lost, stolen, or tampered with. eVisas mean people no longer have to wait for or travel to collect a physical document, streamlining their experience.

The government is asking migrants in the UK who currently use a physical immigration document, including a biometric residence permit (BRP), or a passport containing ink stamps or visa vignette stickers, to take action now and create an online account to access their eVisa .

Most BRPs are due to expire on 31 December 2024, and BRP holders are urged to take action before their BRP expires.

Creating the account enables people to use online services to prove their rights and manage their data, such as their personal details and passport information, and won’t impact their underlying immigration status. Through government funding, extra support is being provided for vulnerable people who need to take action to move from physical documents to an eVisa.

The government continues to work closely with global airline, maritime and rail carriers, who are crucial to ensuring smooth implementation of our digitisation programme.
