Welcome to the beautiful region of Puglia! Today, we will meet in Bari outside the Oriente Hotel at 9:30 am for a fascinating walking tour through the ancient alleys of Bari. We’ll stop at the towering Basilica of St. Nicholas, a stunning example of Romanesque architecture. We’ll also pay a visit to the exterior of the Swabian Castle, the bustling fish market. After seeing Bari up close, we’ll head to the picture-perfect town of Monopoli for a guided walk through the town’s waterfront. In the early afternoon, we’ll head to our final destination of LECCE , or as it’s often referred to Florence of the South , due to the astonishing number of Baroque and Romanesque-style buildings. We’ll spend the first three nights in a beautiful boutique hotel (or similar). We’ll have a welcome dinner tonight at a local bistro.

Meals : Breakfast & lunch on your own, dinner included

Accommodations: Overnight in Lecce

Day 2: BAROQUE SPLENDORS OF LECCE & APULIAN PIZZICA

Lecce is well known for its extensive collection of Baroque mansions and churches that are intricately sculpted from local soft sandstone. In the morning, we’ll take a private city tour to see the top sights. Besides remarkable architecture, Lecce is also known for its paper-Mache handicrafts, displaying skills and artistry that are hard to find elsewhere. Afterward , enjoy a typical caffe’ leccese before having the afternoon to yourself to explore the city. We highly recommend visiting the Museo Faggiano , giving you a greater insight into the city’s centuries-long history. This evening you will be enchanted by a local folk dance called the ‘pizzica’, an amazing cultural experience depicting the traditions of Puglia. You’ll fall in love with this private performance, while relaxing with a glass of prosecco.

Meals : Breakfast included, lunch and dinner on your own

Day 3: BURRATA CHEESE EXPERIENCE & THE TURQUOISE WATERS OF OTRANTO

This morning, we’ll wake up and depart for a visit with a cheese-making farm for a demonstration. Cheese is another pillar of Italian cuisine and an essential ingredient in many Italian dishes. Experience how fresh hand-made cheese is created and sample some of their hard work. Then, we drive towards Cape Otranto to visit a restored 19th-century lighthouse. On a clear day, you can see straight to the mountains of Albania! Afterward, we will visit Otranto, a charming harbor town perched on the shore next to the perfect turquoise blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. Here in Otranto, you can see the stunning Cathedral with its remarkably preserved 12th-century mosaic floor. After time on your own for lunch, we’ll end the day by relaxing on the soft, pillowy sand and swimming in the sea (weather permitting). You’ll have the evening on your own to stroll the town or visit the top sights.

Day 4: ANCIENT GALATINA, WINE TASTING & BIBLICAL MATERA

Today, we will leave stunning Puglia and head to the Basilicata region, a hidden gem in Italy. We are starting our tour in Galatina, an important Greek colony in the Middle Ages. This city is now renowned for being the home of the splendid church of St Caterina d’ Alessandria. The church contains alluring 15th-century frescoes with scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Afterward, we’ll meet our good friend Donato, who will show us around a well-known winery for a taste of their delectable red and white wines and a light lunch. We will end our evening in Matera, a fabulous troglodyte town, where we will stay for the next two nights at the boutique cave hotel.

Day 5: DIVE INTO THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL WONDERS OF MATERA

Matera is rumored to be one of the world’s oldest towns, with records showing its earliest inhabitants in the Paleolithic era. The area is littered with prehistoric grottoes, cave tabernacles, and Renaissance homes, all excavated into the luminous  limestone tufa rock. These rock-cut cave dwellings, known as Sassi, date back to the Byzantine times. With the help of a locally-grown expert, we will explore these historic structures and learn all about the stories and treasures they hold. Matera is home to over 3000 habitable caves, including a medieval church with legendary frescoes. You’ll have the afternoon to explore this unique town on your own before we reconvene for a delicious cena (dinner) this evening in a local restaurant.

Day 6: MAGICAL LOCOROTONDO & HANDS-ON-COOKING EXPERIENCE

Our day starts with a visit to  the whitewashed village of Locorotondo, easily one of the most picturesque towns in all of Italy. The historical center is so quiet you could hear a pin drop and the rosy red geraniums in the window boxes as a crisp pop of color. After a relaxing walk, we’ll visit an Apulian family who will welcome us into their colorful trullo house for a hands-on-cooking experience. Learn how to craft an authentic Southern Italian dish that you can recreate at home to share with family and friends. We will then drive to the white town of Ostuni, where we stay for the next two nights at a central boutique hotel .

Accommodations: Overnight in Ostuni

Today, we’ll explore the pillars of Southern Italian cuisine with a visit to a local Masseria for a tour of an olive oil farm and a tasting. Here, you will be shown an 18th-century Trullo House to give us an insight into their distinctive lifestyle and intriguing architecture. Following this, we will head back to Ostuni for some time on your own to explore. In the evening, dine with locals in a authentic Apulian bistro. Live as a local !!!

Day 8: SAIL THE DAY AWAY IN POLIGNANO A MARE & A TRIP TO CASTEL DEL MONTE

Wide horizons, bold colors, sometimes harsh and a bit lunar. Such is the landscape of the Murgia Valley from the Imperial Puglia, dominated by the presence of Frederick II. This morning, we’ll head to Polignano a Mare to sightsee and set sail on our private boat tour (weather permitting) that will take us along the spectacular coast. We’ll then take a walk through the postcard-worthy town perched on the edge of a cliff accompanied by a street food experience. Following this, we’ll head to the UNESCO World Heritage site, Castel del Monte, a massive and beautiful fortified castle that has stood the test of time. It’s the perfect example of the everlasting nature of mediaeval architecture. In the early afternoon, we will head to Trani, a coastal fishing village, for the final two nights in a central boutique hotel. Here you will have the evening to explore on your own.

Meals : Breakfast included, lunch & dinner on your own

Accommodations: Overnight in Trani

Day 9: A POSTCARD OF TRANI

Today, we will meet our tour guide bright and early for a walking tour of the captivating seaside town of Trani. We will see the famous Romanesque Cathedral of San Pellegrino, followed by the Swabian castle. We will also get to explore the town’s Jewish quarter with its maze of small alleys, synagogues, and artisan shops. This elegant port town is sure to steal your heart. Following this , you can explore the rest of Trani on your own. We recommend shopping in the markets or visiting the marina. Tonight, we will gather for a celebratory dinner at a regional restaurant.

Having only returned home to Australia last month, this is the first chance we’ve had to write a review. We’ve always described ourselves as predominantly independent travellers and so we were a little hesitant about joining a group tour of Puglia & Matera, which we did in April of this year. But now the problem is: how does one praise a perfect tour? For that’s what Secret Italia’s tour of this extraordinary region is. And what makes matters worse, is that all the reviews above have stolen our thunder, for they are absolutely accurate and cover everything we had intended to say. Our thanks must go to Aldo & Katrin’s brilliant work in planning and orchestrating the entire journey. Everything we did, saw and experienced was superb. Highlights for us were: the beauty of the lush countryside of the Itria Valley; the delightful, white-washed, hilltop town of Locorotondo, the exquisitely decorated hotel in Matera with THAT magical view; Primitivo wine; the cathedral in Galatina with its jaw-dropping frescoes; the pasta making experience; the boat ride at Polignano a Mare; everyone singing “Volare” at the tops of our voices, the food, the food, the food and the revelation of drinking Caffè Speciale in Polignano a Mare… We could go on. But most of all our praise must go to our wonderful guide, Paola, who is a super intelligent, empathetic, caring, fun-loving, extremely knowledgeable human being. She’s a marvel, and we thank her from the bottom of our hearts. Anyway, we’ll stop there. We’ve just decided to browse through possible Secret Italia tours for 2025.

Amazing Puglia Tour April 2024

This is a thank you message for Aldo, Karin, Paola and Manuela. We have just returned from amazing Puglia and our guide Paola. The trip was so perfect and the coordination of hotels, restaurants and sights was always well done. Bill and I thank you all for giving us a really relaxing trip with nothing to worry about at any time. From the beginning with Manuela to the ending with Paola it was an impressive and well run tour. We are already thinking about Portugal next year. Best to you all. Bill and Laurie Minch

Fabulous Puglia tour!

Dear Aldo, Katrin and your staff,

I did not think anything could be better than visiting my roots in Sicily but, Puglia was just fantastic. It was perfect from the first moment we met Paola in Bari until we hugged goodbye in Trani. The hotels were excellent and so perfectly located in each town. The s ites defied description. How do you describe the sites of Matera and sleeping in a beautiful cave hotel! Walking around the most quaint towns of Puglia, seeing the men slap the fish, repair fishing nets by hand and sell their olives dolce from their houses just made it all so real. All the hands on experiences and tastings were fabulous. I just can’t say enough about this tour. We knew all but two people on our bus. We met the two additions and they were a treasure ….as we made new friends.Paola, of course is a national treasure! She was proud to show us all with wit and kindness. We look forward to traveling again with Secret Italia.

Puglia small group tour

We recently participated in the small group tour of Puglia in May 2023. The tour was very well organized for its duration with excellent transportation and accommodations. There were 13 people in the group tour plus our knowledgeable amiable guide. The itinerary was fairly inclusive but not overwhelming with lots of free time available. The activities and highlights are well described on the website and include amazing historical sites, wonderful culinary experiences, and beautiful scenery. The small size of the group facilitates amicable interactions within the group . We selected this tour of Puglia from a list of 3 small group tour companies and were not disappointed. We would definitely do another tour with them. Way to go Aldo !!

Response from Secret Italia Tours

Thanks so much Joe…it was an honor to have you with us and hope to have you in future tours. Many thanks and Keep in touch!!!

We Love Secret Tours

Let me first state that I have travelled with Secret Italia Tours through Portugal, now Puglia and have plans to be with them in Greece next year. So I guess that I am sold on them. I think they are one of the best choices for a small tour group available BAR NONE. They have extremely well organized and thorough tours that are passionately constructed by Aldo. They hire amazingly talented and educated guides and drivers, and believe me, that makes a huge difference. The tours are not all church and museum but much more about the culture and people of the region. But if this is your first time and you are unsure, let’s address some of your concerns.

All Hotels are indeed boutique, unique, up-scale and mostly smaller in size, thus giving more time to your comfort. They are almost always right in the centre of the old towns you visit meaning you can walk to restaurants and most often, attractions. Remember that most old town centres have very small and winding streets so you often have to park the van outside the walls and walk into town. It is rarely more than a 15 minute walk but can be uphill going, but remember that they are down hill leaving. Luggage is moved by smaller cars when required.

All the tours visit not only amazingly unique and beautiful churches and castles, they also take boat rides, go to cooking school and have wine tasting. In Europe, going to wine tasting means having a full and amazing lunch with the wine. In Puglia, we also visited a Burrata cheese Farm and made fresh cheese, an olive oil farm where the trees were still producing great olives even after 3000 years, worked with a paper mache master finishing a small statue and learning how to drape paper to look like cloth and made our own orecchiette for our lunch at cooking school as well as some secrets of Puglia cuisine.I could go on and on about all the amazing adventures we all had in a stunningly beautiful country.Trust me when I say that Aldo and his team have worked tirelessly to make sure each of his tours satisfies everyone. Puglia is no exception. There is a good amount of free time to shop and nap but not a ton. All of your breakfasts are covered, many of your lunches and lots of dinners which are usually in very gourmet restaurants. Everywhere we went, our gluten free and vegetarian travellers were taken care of royally. On our trip to Portugal, half of the travellers were returning visitors to Secret Italia. This trip to Puglia had almost half as well. A few of us talked about Greece for next year. So one of the best things to notice about any tour is the number of recurring travellers.I cannot say enough good things about our experiences on both of our trips and we know if we take another, it will be with Secret Italia. Thank you Aldo, Katrin, Paola and the rest of the great team for giving us such wonderful memories.

Puglia is a region with so much to offer even seasoned travellers. Puglia offers unique sights, such as the trulli conical stone houses, and the nearby cave town of Matera. Stunning landscapes, such as the very photogenic town of Polignano A Mare which is poised on the rocks high above the turquoise sea. Amazing food – the creamy burrata cheese, the ripe figs. Each day includes organised activities, visits to all the key sights and a progressive discovery of the local Puglia cuisine. We enjoy long lunches, taking time over the multiple courses to enjoy the atmosphere and to relax.

Our tours are a balance between being informative (examples of the culture and lifestyle, historical details) as well as having everything that makes for an enjoyable trip (long lunches in good restaurants, a relaxed pace). We plan the itinerary in the way that you would plan to travel yourself, or with a group of friends.

  • The UNESCO World Heritage sites of Alberobello (with its conical trulli houses) and Matera (with its cave houses)
  • Key locations such as Ostuni, Polignano A Mare, Lecce, Trani, Monopoli, Egnazia and Locorotondo
  • Discover how the range of civilisations that have settled in Puglia have all left their mark. For example, within walking distance you can find a Spanish palazzo, a Byzantine church and a Roman amphitheatre
  • A culinary focus - we try recipes handed down through the generations and allow you to connect with this ancient wisdom. Match this with Puglia’s wonderful burrata cheese, and with wines found only in this part of Italy – this is a food-lovers’ dream. Later in a masseria (a 16th century farmhouse), a chef helps us cook a fantastic final meal together
  • Experience ‘living traditions’, such as visiting a 4th generation olive oil producer, and a convent where the nuns make biscotti in a centuries' old manner (which we sample of course)

Puglia (6)-min

DAY 1 - BUONGIORNO PUGLIA!

small group tours puglia italy

We meet in Bari, the main city of Puglia, and from here we start our discovery of the region.

Our first stop is Polignano a Mare, a town situated on the coast, an impressive town clinging to a promontory suspended above the Adriatic’s turquoise waters. Polignano a Mare is situated on the coast, an impressive town clinging to a promontory suspended above the Adriatic’s turquoise waters. With a history spanning back to the 4th century BC as a Greek settlement, Polignano a Mare is a charming town centred around the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. The town was on the ancient Roman Trajan’s Way, and you can still see the remains of this route.

Towards evening we reach the town of Ostuni, where we stay in for the next six nights. We stay in the historic centre of town, where the piazzas have the traditional ‘passeggiata’ in full swing each evening. Over the next few days you’ll have plenty of time to explore the town at your own pace. Known as “la città bianca” (the white town), Ostuni is a cluster of whitewashed buildings perched on a hilltop overlooking the coast. Walking through the narrow streets of Ostuni is like being in a forgotten time, evocative and ancient, looking out over an expanse of olive trees. We advise keeping your camera at the ready!

Tonight we dine together, having our first introduction to the cuisine of Puglia. Throughout the week meals are in restaurants designed to showcase the region’s cuisine, with the specific venues all carefully selected by us. This is in order to provide a variety of food styles over the duration of the tour.

MEALS: DINNER (4 COURSES INCLUDING WINE)

DAY 2 – ALBEROBELLO - MONOPOLI

small group tours puglia italy

We depart for our first stop, Alberobello.

The picturesque Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a unique town with streets lined with ‘trulli’. In fact it is known in Italy as the “Capital of trulli”.

Trulli are small stone houses with a distinctive conical roof, built 300-400 years ago.

By walking along its narrow streets, you will be fascinated by the magical and fairytale atmosphere of this place. We explore this town together, and learn about why and how these dwellings were built, and about the cryptic symbols painted on the roof-cones.

Before lunch you have some free time to browse the shops of Alberobello and to wander around.

After lunch we visit Monopoli, a vibrant town on the coast. Monopoli has a long history. Established in the Bronze Age, and fortified since Roman times. The current walls surrounding the town were built by the Spanish in the 16th century, as was the castle. Monopoli is centred around a fishing port, with small wooden fishing boats heading out each day, and then selling their catch on the pier. Life carries on as it has for many generations – fishermen mending their nets, after docking with the catch.

We show you around Monopoli, plus leave you some free time to look at things that catch you interest.

MEALS: BREAKFAST, LUNCH (3 COURSES INCLUDING WINE)

DAY 3 - LECCE

small group tours puglia italy

Today we travel to Lecce, a city that flourished in the 17th century when extravagant and elegant baroque buildings were built by the ruling classes. The baroque style features ornate decorations covering the facades of churches and palaces.

We take a private tour around Lecce with a local expert guide to have the key sights explained to us. The baroque style here is distinct from that in other parts of Italy, both stylistically and in the use of the beige coloured local stone. As well as the architectural and historical features, we make a point of interacting with locals – artisans in their studio creating the local papier mache figures, nuns baking in their convent in the way they have since medieval times. Lecce is an elegant town in which to indulge in more modern pleasures. There are many interesting boutiques and cafes, and the piazzas are full of life in this important southern Italian centre. After some free time in central Lecce we have lunch in a local restaurant, where we dine on the food specific to this part of Puglia, called ‘the Salento’.

DAY 4 - MATERA

small group tours puglia italy

This morning we travel to the town of Matera in the neighbouring Basilicata region. Visiting Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is like a step back in time. In fact this is one of the oldest continually inhabited settlements in the world. The oldest cave dwellings go back to the Bronze Age. The town consists of houses carved out of the rock face along the side of a steep ravine. We meet with a local guide here who gives us an interesting insight into life in Matera, both now and in the past. In fact his grandparents lived in these caves. We visit the ‘sassi’ cave area, and enter one of the typical houses built into the rock, showing the difficult existence in these conditions. We also visit a cave church hewn out of the rock, featuring Byzantine frescoes and with interesting histories as their usage has evolved and adapted to the conditions over the years. Matera was used for the filming of Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” – you’ll see why it is so easy to imagine Matera as being completely removed from the modern age. Since we are in the Basilicata region, our lunch here focuses on the specialties from this inland region.

MEALS: BREAKFAST, LUNCH (4 COURSES INCLUDING WINE)

DAY 5 - EGNAZIA - TRANI

small group tours puglia italy

Today we have a day of two parts – history in the morning, followed by relaxing in a lovely coastal town in the afternoon.

Our first visit is to the ancient Roman site of Egnazia. This was a key stop on the Roman road Trajan’s Way, well used in ancient times as a route to the Near East. Egnazia was a significant town, and today we can see many reminders of its past importance – wandering through the town we see where bakeries, gymnasiums and temples were located. The Roman road runs through the town, the rut marks left by the carriage wheels provide a direct connection to the past. Looking out to the coast we see where the local boats docked, having loaded up with olive oil and grain.

Continuing on we reach the town of Trani, a key summer destination for Italians and it is invariably one of the most loved visits for people on our tour. We start outside the stunning Romanesque cathedral perched right on the waterfront, and go on firstly to one of the key locations for the Knights Templar. We see the site where this fascinating order based themselves, originally the final point for their missions to leave these shores to head to the near east. Moving through the old Jewish quarter of town reveals much about how the way life in Trani was conducted, in particular seeing how the synagogues have evolved through the eras.

Today the harbour in Trani is a fishing port ringed by waterfront restaurants. Each morning the fishermen sell their fresh fish from the pier where they dock. Lunch is in a seaside restaurant making the most of this fresh catch.

DAY 6 - MARKETS - LOCOROTONDO - WINERY - COOKING

small group tours puglia italy

This morning is the weekly market day in Locorotondo, we get to see how the locals do their shopping – rows and rows of stalls with cheese, seasonal fruit, vegetables, and other fresh produce. We take the time to look around Locorotondo, an absolutely gorgeous town, in fact voted as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy (“Borghi piu belli d’Italia”).

After browsing the market we depart to visit a family run winery, focussed on making quality wines from the traditional varieties that are grown in this area such as fiano minutolo and susumaniello. The winemaker takes us through the vineyard, and we taste a range of wines. Some of these wine varieties were so rare that they were not made commercially up until a few years ago.

Today we take the opportunity to show you a local folk dance called the ‘pizzica’. This is a fascinating experience, as it reveals much about the culture and traditions of Puglia. The pizzica dance is specific to this area, and many people who visit Puglia do not get the chance to see it. You’ll love this private performance, while relaxing with a glass of prosecco.

In the evening we have a special touch for our final evening, taking a cooking lesson from a local chef. Since you’ve been with us for a week now you will all be Puglia food experts. The focus will be on cooking typical Puglia dishes, first taking you through the types of ingredients used and their provenance. The cuisine of Puglia is based on the produce at a very local level, so is different to the food from other Italian regions.

Seasonal vegetables, as well as focaccia and other breads, dominate this cuisine. All these are based on the abundant fresh ingredients as well as the ever-present extra virgin olive oil – a simple and effective cuisine. Recipes have been handed down through the generations and are truly expressive of the Mediterranean diet. The session is hands on and we are all involved in making a series of dishes, and we finish off the session by dining on the meal we’ve prepared.

DISTINCTIVE CHARACTER, UNIQUE LOCATIONS

In Puglia we stay in the charming town of Ostuni. The historic centre is lined with elegant old buildings, evocative lanes amongst the whitewashed buildings, and piazzas with the traditional ‘passeggiata’ in full swing each evening. Ostuni offers many opportunities for eating out, wandering through the back streets, and finding stunning views out to the coast. We base our tours at the either the Hotel Monte Sarago or the Hotel Primo in Ostuni. Both are 4 star hotels, from which you can walk into the centre of Ostuni to enjoy the evenings.

L Z, CANADA

Italy With Pleasure curated an amazing itinerary and ultimately, experience in Puglia for our group of 7. Mark, our incredible tour guide, shared the history, highlights, and hidden gems in each glorious location. Daily, we shared delicious meals, all local recipes, made with fresh ingredients from the region…a true highlight of the entire experience. Each day had the right balance of group and free time and while I may be biased, I think our group was the best…a shared experience with amazing people from around the world! This was the first time I joined a tour and it will not be the last. I have my eye on Sicily next! My entire experience with Italy With Pleasure was superb and I highly recommend them for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the beauty and culture of Italy.

P B, AUSTRALIA

I can't thank the small tour group, Italy With Pleasure, enough for a fantastic trip to Puglia. The group size was perfect and our guide, Anita, was amazing, knowledgeable and so caring of everyone. This area of Italy for non-Italian speaking guests was the absolute best way to visit. I was amazed at the beautiful cultural sites in all the towns AND the fabulous late luncheons featuring the local specialties. Spectacular! I have never had such great food on a tour or anywhere. Thanks again and I have already shared our great experience with a number of my friends and family. View Review

J I, AUSTRALIA

The tour was first class, excellent in every way. An amazing way to see & learn about Puglia. The accomodation, sightseeing, superb food & mini van with great driver and Anita leading the group was sensational. We highly recommend this is the best way to see and learn about Puglia. View Review

Rupestrian churches, houses, caves, and ancient streets create a unique and suggestive landscape, where Mel Gibson chose to shoot the movie, The Passion of the Christ. You will enjoy a fascinating walking tour through the unique and ancient Sassi di Matera and visit of a Casa Grotta museum (ancient cave house museum) fully furnished as it was in the past. Best Experience! We wanted to see the Puglia region and booked this 8 day, seven night tour at the recommendation of one of our friends. We usually travel on our own and book private tours of certain cities that interest us. This tour was just outstanding and we are glad that we used them to visit Puglia. They are very easy to work with and can and will customize your experience. They are very knowledgeable of the area and gave us some very unique experiences that we just wouldn't have been able to do without them. They handled all of the transportation, accomodations and actually location tours. All 1st class!

Beautiful Puglia....an Italian treasure! We are leaving Puglia with an understanding of the history and an appreciation for the beauty and culture of this part of Italy. Our trip was busy but with a pace so we never felt rushed. The care taken to be sure each lunch experience was true to the region visiting was appreciated by the 5 of us. We loved this trip and encourage anyone visiting Puglia to use Arrivederci Puglia Travel. They are a joy to spend time with and become family. Lunch at a winery known for Puglian Primitivo wine A visit to Alberobello's famous limestone  trulli  houses

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

Explore the long heel of Italy's boot to discover sights, tastes, and gorgeous seascapes you'll find nowhere else... like Matera, where the Sassi houses are caverns and the streets are sometimes the roofs of other houses... Trulli houses, tiny fairy castles made of limestone slabs, built without mortar...

Baccanti ristorani, matera, explore polignano a mare, discover the cliffside grottoes and seaside charms of polignano a mare on the adriatic.

If you're of "a certain age," you might remember an Italian pop song from the late 1950s that crossed the Atlantic and became an international hit. Its actual title is "Nel blu dipinto di blu", but it's better known around the world as "Volare" ("To Fly"). It was co-written and performed by Italian singer, songwriter, actor (and, later in life, politician) Domenico Modugno, and is closely identified with his hometown, Polignano a Mare, perched on the Adriatic Sea near Bari in Puglia. Spend some time exploring this seaside town known for its cliff diving and the deep blue grottoes that inspired the song.

The "Sassi" cave dwellings of Matera

Ride a tuk-tuk amidst the "sassi" cave dwellings of matera, a unesco world heritage site.

Hop aboard a tuk-tuk for a ride through the winding streets of Matera in Basilicata, where you'll see a series of rock or cave dwellings that date back to Paleolithic times. Known as Sassi (for "stone"), these dwellings, piled atop one another across a steep ravine, were once natural caves and grottoes that over the centuries were adapted by human settlers as homes. Devoid of residents since the 1960s, the Sassi of Matera are now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which you'll explore with a local guide who will share insights on the site, which served as a location in the Mel Gibson film "The Passion of the Christ."

The trulli houses of Alberobello

What are trulli.

On visits to Alberobello in Italy's Puglia region, you'll notice these peculiar cone-roofed homes lining its streets. Known as trulli, these buildings are a remarkable example of mortarless construction, a technique by which carefully selected interlocking stones are used to bind a structure, and one that dates back to prehistoric times! Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996, today trulli stand as a symbol of human ingenuity.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.

  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

While it is common for airlines to allow passengers to check more than one piece of luggage per person, space constraints during your Tauck journey make it difficult to accommodate extra luggage. We ask that you limit your checked luggage to one average size suitcase per person.

Recently, airlines have adopted policies enforcing strict number, size and weight limits. Luggage exceeding maximum restrictions may require expensive overage fees, frustrating and hurried re-packing at the ticket counter, or even risk being left behind.

Many carriers require that checked luggage not exceed a weight of 50 lbs (22.7 kg) per piece. Airlines revise luggage policies frequently and often without notice; therefore, we cannot be held liable for the accuracy of the weight limit listed above. We urge you to check with your airline before traveling to determine current number, weight and size restrictions. It is also important to note that restrictions for luggage number, weight and size may vary with the same airline based on the class of service you select. First and Business Class ticket holders may have different restrictions than Coach Class travelers. You may wish to consult the website, luggagelimits.com , by clicking here .

We cannot be held liable for additional fees or inconveniences imposed by the airline due to luggage number, weight and size policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Italy is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do at the various sites and towns is at your discretion.

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Puglia enjoys a comfortable Mediterranean climate with hot sunny summers and mild winters. Summer lasts from June until September, and is hot and sunny with rainfall increasing after July, to a peak in September and October. The average summer temperature is not too hot and ranges between 26°C (79°F) and 30°C (85°F), and remains warm through September with an average of 26°C (79°F). The beaches along the Adriatic coast benefit from being sheltered and the average water temperature of between 20°C (68°F) and 26°C (79°F) makes it comfortable for bathers for the whole summer season. Because of Puglia's southern position on the Italian peninsula, it has long summer days with as many as 14 hours of sunshine per day at the height of summer.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

When packing for your trip to Italy, it is important to keep in mind the time of year you are traveling and the current weather conditions for that time. The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but certainly be comfortable.

Most Catholic churches in Italy require that your knees and shoulders be covered when you enter, even during the hot days of summer. This is particularly important when you visit St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, where shorts and tank tops are not allowed.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. By law in Italy, irons and ironing boards are not made available to guests at the hotels. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Italy:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

PUGLIA TOURS 2024 - SOUTHERN ITALY

As a licensed tour company, we are proud to advise you on the different activities, locations and tours you can enjoy in Puglia, Italy. We know that an unforgettable trip doesn't depend only on a good selection of places to see. A memorable tour is created out of the perfect harmony between you as travellers and us as hosts. Whether you are travelling alone, with your family or with friends, feel free to contact us! After talking with you, we'll be able to offer you a personalised tour that allows you to discover Puglia in an authentic way.

Ciao, I'm Pietro!

I’m a travel designer and tour guide. I was born and raised in Puglia, but I spent many years studying and working abroad. During my years outside of Italy, I enjoyed showing my international friends the hidden places of my homeland while on vacation in Southern Italy.

I was always very proud and happy to arrange holidays for me and my friends and experience together undiscovered places of Puglia. One day, six years ago, I realized this must be my job! So I moved back to the south of Italy and started working as a tour guide with big groups in Puglia.

This was such a joy for me, but I felt I was still missing something. I didn't appreciate guiding a lot of people in overcrowded places! But most of all I was missing the human contact with my guests. One year later, I decided to focus on small and individual guided tours of Puglia.

I’m Pietro, tour designer and guide. I was born and raised in Puglia, but have spent many years studying and working abroad. During my university years outside of Italy, I enjoyed showing my international friends all the hidden places of my region while on vacation in southern Italy. I was always very proud and happy to arrange holidays for me and my friends and experience the undiscovered places of Puglia together. Then one day, seven years ago, I came to the realisation that I should make this my job! So I moved back to the south of Italy and started working as a tour guide, taking big groups around Puglia. This was such a joy for me, but I felt that I was still missing something. I didn’t appreciate guiding a lot of people in overcrowded places, moving quickly from place to place without having the time to really make the most of it. But, most of all, I was missing the personal contact with my guests. One year later, I decided to focus on small and individual guided tours of Puglia. And so Puglialy was born.

TRAVEL TIPS - TOURS TO PUGLIA

Are you looking for a different kind of trip off the beaten path, but don’t know exactly where? Are you passionate about Italian food and culture but have never discovered Puglia? Puglia might lack the reputation and popularity of other corners of Italy such as Tuscany, Venice, and Rome, and is not as visited by tourists as often as the northern Italian cultural sites, but it is exactly this – together with the age-old cultural and gastronomic traditions, the beauty of its undiscovered landscape, and the fascinating history and architecture – that make this less touristy region of Italy even more charming and authentic.

If you’re still in two minds if Puglia is the right place for your next holiday, I’m here to provide you with all the information you need to decide whether you should visit Puglia or not. And, let’s face it, who is better placed to advise you than a passionate native? Feel free to contact me for any general information – I’m happy to get back to you as quickly as possible with recommendations on where to visit, when to visit, how to get here, and anything else related to my homeland.

TRAVEL PLANNING - PLACES TO VISIT FOR PERFECT TOURS OF PUGLIA

Planning a trip can be hard work and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the information you might find on the internet.

I remember when I planned my first trip to Ireland and found so many blogs, websites and guides that it really confused me. It made me think: “if only I had an Irish friend, willing to help me decide where to stay, what to see, and what to do when visiting his homeland?” That could have spared me all my efforts. I would have saved a lot of time and I would have been sure I wouldn’t miss anything.

Now imagine you had an Italian friend by the name of Pietro, a native Pugliese who was very passionate about his roots and culture, knew your language and culture, and even worked as a tour guide in Puglia? Wouldn’t it be the perfect solution to all of your questions?

Guess what? Here I am! And I’m ready and happy to help you plan your tour of Puglia! All you need to do is write me a few lines to let me know all the relevant information about your planned trip, such as dates, preferences, number of guests, etc, and I’ll quickly design and send to you a personalised day-by-day itinerary for a southern Italy tour to Puglia that suits you perfectly.

PUGLIA - WHY TRAVEL HERE?

You might be wondering if Italy has places like Rome, Naples, Venice, and Florence to offer, why you would want to travel to Puglia in the first place. However, a better question might be why don’t you want to travel to Puglia? As a fairly undiscovered part of Italy, our Puglia tours will take you to some of the best places the country has to offer, but without the tourist crowds. In Puglia you can marvel at wonderful examples of architecture from different eras of history, taste delicious Puglian cuisine, and visit the corners of the area that would be impossible if you were travelling by yourself.

The region is home to a number of beautiful places which you’ll have the chance to explore on one of our tours of Puglia, Italy. Some offer great examples of Baroque and Romanesque architecture, such as Bari and Lecce. Some architectural styles go even further back in time, like the sassi in Matera, one of the oldest cities in the world, or are simply completely unique, such as the traditional trulli houses in Alberobello and the surrounding area. Puglia also has many picturesque coastal towns and villages for you to wander around and enjoy the sparkling waters of the Adriatic, like Polignano a Mare and Trani.

But it’s not just cities and towns that you can visit. On our Puglia guided tours, we offer a whole host of traditional Puglian experiences for you to enjoy, such as cheese tasting, wine tasting, olive oil tasting, and a visit to a street food market.

Puglia has some of the best natural areas in the whole of Italy and for the active among you, we can arrange tours of Puglia which will introduce you to spectacular scenery. One day you could be hiking through the Parco della Murgia Materana, where you can discover many examples of humankind’s history from Prehistoric times while admiring the abundance of flora and fauna here. The next day you could find yourself biking through Parco delle Dune Costiere, taking you past ancient olive groves and arable land.

Best of all, you can discover all these places with a native Pugliese who will not just take you around these wonderful places, but will also give you an insider’s view and lots of information about the history and culture of everywhere you go. Because we run small group and individual tours, you get a much more personalised experience as we have the time to get to know you, regale you with our stories and share our love of Puglia with you. On our Puglia Italy tours you’ll not just go home at the end of your trip feeling relaxed and fulfilled, but also feeling that you have learned something about our wonderful region.

Immerse yourself in unexpected beauty.

Our Puglia guided tours are designed so that our travelers are able to experience this Italian region to the fullest extent. And they are designed as such because we want you to be exposed to an authentic Italian lifestyle that is virtually untouched by time.

Puglia is much more than just a place where historical buildings still stand to this very day. It’s also a place where many of the citizens have a profound respect for customs that are somewhat lost in other regions of Italy that have adopted modernity.

In Puglia, old customs and traditions are still practiced to this very day. And through our guided tours of Puglia, you’ll be able to witness them in person.

Nada’s Italy Small Group Tours of Puglia

If you yearn to discover an Italian region that’s been barely touched by time, you will find this in Puglia. And this is because a trip to this Italian region will expose you to a myriad of historical sites, authentic Italian traditions, and equally authentic Italian food and wine.

While here, you’ll learn about plenty of customs that are practiced nearly every day including the art of papier-mâché and the traditional Southern Italian dance of “Taranta”. Such customs are an integral part of this Italian region, which is why it’s a Puglia must see for travelers who search for something out of the ordinary. You’ll also be able to experience and witness up close many of the historical buildings that occupy this Italian region as some are adorned with accessories that highlight their beauty even to this day. But most of all, of course, you can indulge yourself in the food and wine culture as you witness the practice of Italian cuisine in person.

Our authentic Puglia tours are a definite must for anyone and anybody who wants to learn and even see in person what authentic Italian culture is like.

Friday | Day 1 | Benvenuto: Welcome!

Welcome to Puglia! Start your journey uncovering one of Italy's last hidden gems. Tonight you will rest in a luxury hotel within walking distance of "Bari Vecchia" (the historic district of Bari) and relax after a long trip overseas. Enjoy a leisure walk through the picturesque streets of Bari with our expert City Guide who will introduce you to the main sites, churches, buildings, and traditions that Bari is known for, including the Basilica di San Nicola, which holds St. Nicholas' tomb under its main altar. We'll walk along the ancient walls, so we can better enjoy the view of the sea and harbor. The old town of Bari appears to revel in its own traditions. You may run into old ladies sitting by their front door, kneading fresh pasta and leaving the "orecchiette" (ear-shaped pasta) to dry out in the sun. Enjoy a delicious home-style meal with regional specialties with your fellow travelers.

Meals included: dinner

Saturday | Day 2 | Castel del Monte & Lecce

We'll leave the city of Bari to head inland, where we'll slowly see the stern and imposing Castel del Monte in the distance. This impressive structure dominates the surrounding countryside from a high viewpoint, where nothing interrupts its 360-degree view. There is a strong element of mystery within the castle, built in the 1240's by Emperor Frederick II of Svevia. The intent was not to create a defensive fortress, but rather a study & knowledge center where science, theology, philosophy, and alchemy experts from all over the Mediterranean could meet and exchange their thoughts & findings. The number 8, symbolizing the infinite nature of the Divine, appears repeatedly, almost obsessively, within the 8 rooms, the octagonal base, 8 towers each with 8 sides, and other architectural elements within the castle. We'll take a guided tour of this amazing site, a Unesco World Heritage site since 1996. We continue our drive to Lecce, aka "the Florence of the South". We continue our drive to Lecce, aka "the Florence of the South", we will have a g roup lunch on the way to Lecce, then we'll check into one of the most elegant parts of the city, where different architectural styles live together in perfect harmony. Enjoy a group dinner, carefully chosen among dozens of local traditional restaurants.

Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Sunday | Day 3 |  From the Sea to the Olive Groves

Leave Lecce and head East for a relaxing day on the water of the Adriatic Sea. From the port of Otranto, we’ll be boarding a traditional sail boat that will take us along the beautiful coast of the region, where sandy beaches alternate with green-blue caves and craggy outcrops facing the clear waters of the Adriatic.  We’ll enjoy a typical aperitivo on the boat, perhaps take a refreshing swim, before heading back to Otranto to continue our journey. Once back in Otranto,  the easternmost Italian city, with a charming historical center, an imposing castle “Castello Aragonese”, and many picturesque viewpoints of the sea. Not to be missed is the Cattedrale dell’Annunziata, where you can see a massive mosaic floor dating back to the 12th century, with semi-precious stones depicting the Tree of Life, with fascinating scenes that mix sacred stories with profane ones. Walk around the cobblestone alleys decorated with flowers and stop by hidden gems such as the Byzantine Basilica of Saint Peter’s. Once we return to Lecce, you’ll be able to enjoy dinner on your own..

Meals included: breakfast, Aperitivo

Monday | Day 4 |  Elegant Lecce

After breakfast, an expert local guide will meet us at the hotel to introduce us to Lecce's famous landmarks including the splendid Roman Amphitheater, the richly decorated Cathedral of Maria SS. Assunta. The way the light reflects on the buildings of Lecce is truly remarkable; making them spectacular by day, almost made of gold, but most strikingly dramatic at night time. We’ll be driving north, stopping at a local boutique winery, where the intense and full-bodied Salice Salentino wine is made from dark purple grapes of Negroamaro (which translated to “black-bitter”). We’ll learn about the production of the area, aging techniques, and then sit down for a wine tasting and delicious home-made lunch. We return to the hotel. We visit a traditional papier mâché workshop, where you can learn all about the ancient craft and why it bloomed in Lecce. You enjoy the rest of the evening on your own.

Meals included: breakfast, lunch

Tuesday | Day 5 |  Galatina & Gallipoli

Today we'll be visiting Gallipoli, a fishing village with beautiful sea views and alleyways lined with clotheslines and locals leaning over balconies, conversing and greeting visitors as they walk by. We continue on towards the west coast, stopping in Galatina, a village where ornate palaces, rich portals, and Baroque churches boast the most elegant embellishments of Rococo' style. A must-see is the Romanesque-Gothic Basilica of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, where you'll be able to admire some of the most breath-taking frescoes from the School of Giotto, of which the importance is only second to the Basilica of Assisi. Before we head out to dinner back in Lecce, we'll be entertained by a local dance crew performing the famous "Taranta", among the most recognized forms of traditional southern Italian folk dance. It's characterized by a fast upbeat tempo, performed by a supposed victim of a "tarantula" bite, who is able to "shake off" through contortions and perspiration the delirium attributed to the spider's venom .

Meals included: breakfast, dinner

Wednesday | Day 6 | Altamura & the Magical Matera

Today we are exploring Altamura  a charming town with beautiful palaces and churches such as the imposing Cattedrale dell’Assunta. Here, we’ll stop for leisurely lunch. Taste the first bakery product in Europe branded “DOP” (a certification that protects the traditional recipe, process, and place of production) the famous Pane di Altamura, prepared with “mother yeast”, ground wheat flower from the Murge area of Puglia, and baked in a wood brick oven. It dates back to Medieval times and is often in the shape of a “priest’s hat”.  We’ll visit a local bakery where you’ll learn how this traditional bread is made. After some free time to stroll around Altamura, we continue our drive to  Matera's deep and complex history through the centuries. Said to be one of the world’s oldest towns, dating back to pre-historic times Matera is known for its "Sassi", incredible cave dwellings dug into the limestone rock. The dramatic landscape surrounding the town as it rises from a deep gorge created by the Gravina river, give Matera an almost surreal atmosphere.  Enjoy a group dinner, carefully chosen among dozens of local traditional restaurants.

Thursday  | Day 7 | Puglia's Wine & Culinary Tradition

After check-out, we’ll be driving south, and stop along the way in the picturesque village of Ostuni. From the road below, it looks like a floating mirage of white light mid-way between the sea and land.  From the ancient town, up the hill, you can see a beautiful coastline wrapped by lush green fields. The medieval heart of the town, called “Terra”, is crisscrossed by narrow alleys, steep stairways, craft shops, family-style restaurants, and small courtyards adorned with geranium planters. The 15TH century Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral boasts a rare 24-SPOKE rose portal.  We’ll be driving, stopping at a local Masseria to enjoy a fun group cooking class at a traditional family Masseria, a fortified farmhouse in typical Pugliese style, dating back to the 1600’s. This charming building allows to really sample life in southern Italy with the family’s warm hospitality.  After lunch with local specialties, we’ll arrive at our resort, where you can relax , spending time on your own, and completely free your mind before your group dinner.

Friday | Day 8 | Reflections of the Past

Today we’re exploring the beating heart of the Valle D’Itria, the heart of the region of Puglia. Visit Locorotondo, a circular-base village with stunning views of the countryside. We enjoy a pleasant walk in the narrow streets around the white-washed houses of Locorotondo.  Time in the afternoon to explore Martina Franca, the largest town in the Valley. Explore its old center which boasts beautiful baroque architecture and quaint streets. Taste some local Gelato and then have some free time.  Enjoy a group dinner, carefully chosen among dozens of local traditional restaurants.

Saturday | Day 9 | Alberobello and the Trulli

Explore the beating heart of the Valle D'Itria, Alberobello, one of the world's most unique places and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We'll visit the community of Trulli, dating back to the 1400's with our expert City Guide, who will tell us about life in these peculiar cone-shaped dwellings and how they came to be. Enjoy lunch on you own in Alberobello, before heading altogether towards Cisternino, considered one of the most fascinating villages in the whole area. Time to stroll around before returning to the hotel for some time to rest.  Tonight, you’ll learn about olive oil and savor home-made dishes at a nearby family-owned farm, surrounded by thousand-year- old olive groves and beautiful lush gardens with large tropical plants and fragrant citrus trees.

Sunday | Day 10 | The Coastal Flair of Polignano a Mare

After checking out from the hotel, we'll drive back up to Bari. On the way, we'll make a stop in Polignano a Mare a small village sitting on the edge of a dramatic cave overlooking the sea and then continue to Monopoli where we will enjoy a group lunch, before we head back to Bari.. After check-in, enjoy some extra time to experience the history and liveliness of Bari, explore its vivacious nightlife and bustling streets. Let the memories of the trip fill up your thoughts before returning home.

What Our Clients Say

This was our second memorable tour with nada’s..

Like last year every day was fun and full of great sites, food and experiences. We really enjoyed the other guests on the tour especially Frank & Jane, Lori & Don, Bobby, Susan. Thank you Marco our tour guide. His experience, knowledge and professionalism made our vacation perfect. We hope to do this every year with Nada’s, because Italy is our favorite country. All of these memories the big and the small are going to stay with us for the rest of our lives.

Above and Beyond!

I would just like to give a special ‘shout out’ to our wonderful tour director, Marco Scaglioni. Sometimes the unexpected happens and you just have to figure out how to get through it. After two years of planning for our second Nada’s Italy tour, I had the misfortune to pull a hamstring on our first day in Milan. Marco was already dealing with a lost luggage problem and we hadn’t even had our first transfer to Lake Como!! What were we in for??? Not to worry. Marco is a treasure. Ever the professional, he just pivoted to accommodate. I was able to fully enjoy this wonderful country Italy.

Loved everything.

There was a nice mix of city and history and relaxing to absorb the natural beauty throughout. I especially loved Sorrento, Ravello and the day we spent on the boat enjoying the coast line.

Absolutely awesome trip!

We loved the truffle hunting, the rice farm visit, the winery visit, all different and unique. We also loved the cooking class. I felt like I was at home cooking with family. Least favorite was probably St Moritz. It was okay but I would much rather have had that day in Milan or Turin to see more of what can be seen there. It was a lovely train ride but we didnt think it fit in with the itinerary. It felt more like a filler day than anything else.

Favorite Vacation!

One of my favorite vacations. Nada's tour directors are terrific and make sure that everything you want and/or need is taken care of. I would definitely go on another tour with Nada's Italy tours.

We loved our Puglia Paradise tour.

We loved our Puglia Paradise tour. Leo is a terrific guide, the accommodations were excellent and the food superb. I strongly recommend keeping an open mind when it comes to food. I wound up loving some of the seafood which I had expected I would dislike. Try everything! There were so many unique and interesting places to see on this tour. And the size of the group allowed us to get into smaller places without crowding.

It was a wonderful trip. I would love to take another trip in the future.

Nada makes you feel like you are loved and very, very special on her tours.....

Nada makes you feel like you are loved and very, very special on her tours. The tour guides never appear to be "working" as they love their time and energy shared with you. There is no better way to immerse yourself in the Italian culture.

Our small group tour to Italy with Nada's Italy was very organized and professionally executed, from start to finish. And the tour guides and drivers ARE GREAT!! They are flexible when they need to be and go out of their way to please. There is a good mix of "on your own time" along with the scheduled tour stops. It truly is the "tour for people who don't go on tours".

Memorable experience.

I don't think there are enough adjectives to describe the experience we had on a recent trip to Italy with Nada's...and now, I cannot imagine taking another trip to Italy without them! From start to finish everything was perfect - hotels, meals, drivers and the tour guides are just fabulous. They could not do enough for us and it was a very memorable experience. I have already recommended them to numerous friends and will continue to do so.

You will truly experience Italy..

I have been a regular traveller with Nada's Italy for 7 years. I am a single traveller and was hesitant to venture to Italy alone until I found Nada's Italy! I dreaded being herded onto a big tour bus!!! Their small, personal, friendly groups of just 12 are perfect whether you are single, a small group of friends or family or a couple. The tours are exceptional with excellent accomodations, fascinating itineraries, the best tour leaders in Italy, wonderful food and wine and comprehensive planning! You will see the sites you expect to see as well as some off the beaten path experiences you never imagined seeing. You will truly experience Italy....not just get paraded from site to site! I truly feel that Nada's Italy is the best and only way to see and experience Italy...or even Spain or France....I highly recommend them to anyone interested!! This fall I will be going on yet another of my many trips with them and am sure it will not be my last!!

Excellent!!!!

Excellent tour of Italy - everything was top notch! Nada is the very best guide and leader for a fun-filled tour - the wine, the food, the shopping and the most wonderful scenery. I cannot wait to take another Italian adventure with Nada!!

Nada's Italy provides you with an effortless and amazing experience while traveling in a small group setting. Best way to see Italy and not feel like a tourist.

Everything was absolutely perfect.

This was the best trip we have ever taken. I would recommend Nada's Italy to anyone that wants to have the trip of a lifetime!

Traveling with Nada's Italy is a unique experience where you are able to experience the authentic Italy. Really an incredible experience unlike any other.

We could not have asked for a better honeymoon! We are both busy surgical residents and didn't have time to plan a honeymoon! Nada's did all the work for us! The trip was perfect! Everything went so smoothly! We would not change a thing! A++++

Perfect Balance!

It was a perfect balance of scheduled and free time. The small group allowed us to build friendships. The locations were a perfect blend of off the beaten path local sites with minimal "touristy" events. And Sergio was the best. He was personable and engaging from the first email to the last goodbye. He made us laugh throughout the trip and became a friend.

Thought of Everything!

It seems you thought of just about everything from water on the bus, a nice variety of experiences, wonderful accommodations, never ending food and drink and scheduled time on our own just when we needed it towards the end of the trip.

Nada's tours are amazing. Each trip we have done has Nada's personal stamp - she spoils us with little surprises and the detail is amazing. On top of all that her tour guides are second to none.

Amazing Time!

I cannot use enough superlatives to describe the amazing time our two groups have just had in Italy thanks to your wonderful organization and your amazing leaders. From the moment that Sergio greeted us for our first ten days with his all-encompassing humor, energy and care, we floated through Italy amid perfectly chosen accommodations, sumptuous repasts, fascinating information and above all extraordinary care and attention. The fact that we are already planning our next Nada Experience says it all.

Unforgettable!

Nada's pre-tour with the ByDesign department is the best way to travel on your own without a care in the world but having fun! The pre-trip to the Amalfi Coast, staying in Positano for four nights and day trips to the jewels was fabulous! Nada's Puglia tour is very special, a delight at every turn in every town. You won't necessarily have heard of the towns before, but you won't forget them after visiting them, they are unforgettable! And thank you to Sergio for being a fabulous tour guide and friend.

You will not just see Italy...

My first trip to Italy was with Nada in 2011. It was so fantastic that I immediately booked another. It exceeded all expectations! To date, I have been on 6 of these magnificent tours...Sole Terra (Tuscany), Jewels of the Amalfi Coast, Venetian Splendors, Sizzling Sicily, Dolce Vita (Umbria) and Puglia Paradise. The first 3 were led by Nada who left no detail to chance and took us to places that were not the usual tourist stops. The next three were led by Leonardo, Alice, and Sergio. Also, as a single traveler, I was hesitant to venture off to Europe alone. But on these trips, I soon felt like I was on a trip with close friends. To me, this is the best and only way to see Italy!!

Highly Recomend!

This was our third tour with Nada's Italy and all three have been excellent. Her tour guides are all experts in the area of the tours. We look forward to traveling on our 4th trip in June. We highly recommend these personalized tours all of which take you to see the real Italy off the beaten path of the touristy areas.

Great Tour Leaders!

Sergio was fantastic and really made this a special tour. We were very happy with all aspects of the tour. Thanks - it was a treat to travel with you!

Keeps You Coming Back for More!!

Pre-trip email with helpful hints and names of fellow travelers is always great. The office is very helpful also with additional help for travel before and after the tour. The best and only way to REALLY experience Italy is with Nada's Italy. Traveling in style with just 12 or less makes it a first class experience. And the tour leaders are undoubtedly the best! You will want to go back again and again as I have!

Fabulous Time!

Nada's Italy Tours is the perfect tour for your visit to Italy. Its more about the good company and the great food!

As a tribute to the tour guides, you never would have known this was a inaugural tour. From a traveler's perspective everything was seamless. Having three guides as talented, witty and knowledgeable as Leo, Sergio and Antonella added greatly to the enjoyment of our experience. Looking forward to our next Nada's experience.

Explore the Stunning Puglia Region of Southern Italy

About puglia.

The “heel of Italy’s boot,” Puglia, also known as Apulia (Latin), is a charming region that can be visited all year round. The region contains some of Italy’s most vibrant nature, history, tradition, tastes and even spirituality.

Geographically, Puglia is located at the spur of the Italian Boot. It is an enchanting region that spreads lengthwise along the Adriatic sea and possesses marvellous beaches that will delight every traveler.

Join us on one of our small group tours as we explore the Puglia region in all its beauty. Take a dip in the crystalline waters of the Ionian Sea before relaxing with a glass of wine and local delicacies at one of our secret “slow food” restaurants.

Our recent trip to the Puglia region

Angela and Andrew recently visited the Puglia – they explored the region from North to South, meeting with local restaurant owners and tour operators to uncover the hidden gems for the upcoming holiday season. On their trip they stopped at the beautiful white city of Ostuni, the ancient town of Locorotondo and the stunning, baroque town of Lecce, to name a few. Our passion for Italy, and our knowledge of Puglia, is what makes an experience with Italy Touring unique.

Our difference – why you should tour Puglia with Italy Touring

Italy Touring is not a giant travel conglomerate. We’re a family owned business with a passion for Italian travel. We regularly visit Italy to uncover some of the country’s best kept secrets. If you decide to travel with Italy Touring on one of our intimate, small group tours, we promise that you will experience the magic of Italy in a way that no other tour operator can offer.

How to Spend the Perfect One Week in Puglia Itinerary

Last Updated on 13th September 2024 by Sophie Nadeau

This post may contain affiliate links. Please check out my  privacy policy  and  disclosure  for more information.

Puglia is the sun soaked heel of Italy’s boot , known as the “land of two seas” , you’re never too far from crystal clear waters and breathtaking coastlines. It is a region of Italy filled with charming historic centres and uniquely littered with traditional Trulli. Puglia is where fine wine, olive oil and good living thrive! Here’s your guide on how to spend one perfect week in Puglia , as well as top tips to know before you go!

sophie nadeau in mesagne

Side note: Deep into the south of Italy, this part of the country is where Italians have been known to holiday for generations. A region steeped in tradition and until fairly recently, Puglia remained relatively undiscovered by travellers.

However, with a recent surge in popularity thanks to social media, and the Italian government’s interest in drawing people to visit and live in the area, the heel of Italy is rapidly modernising and opening up to the world (and for good reason!)

Retaining the balance between tradition and modernity is important for the people of Puglia and its heritage, while an increase in visitors is good for economic reasons, those who travel to destinations like this must do so responsibly and respectfully.

What is Puglia known for?

Just a note to say, this itinerary is ambitious and in its entirety it is best suited to those who love to do something at every moment of every day. we wanted to share every place and the joys of the puglian region we fell in love with (hence why we were so eager to fit everything in) however, if you prefer a more leisurely pace, you can still see enough to fall in love with southern italy. feel free to pick and choose your favourite destinations from the following mentioned, and enjoy your travels how you like, one week in puglia suggested itinerary.

  • Acaya

Torre Sant Andrea

Grotta zinzulusa.

  • Otranto

Grotta della Poesia (if you have more time)

Gallipoli , santa maria di leuca , specchia , presicce , lecce , vincent city , visit a vineyard (cantine san pancrazio), san vito dei normani, ostuni , spiaggia di torre pozzelle, monopoli , polignano a mare , san vito .

  • Strada Arco Basso (if time allows)

Mola di Bari

Conversano , grotte di castellana , alberobello , martina franca, taranto , grottaglie , where to stay in puglia.

The region of ‘Apulia’ as it is known in English or ‘Puglia’ in Italian and ‘Les Pouilles’ in French, is a little more rural than other parts of Italy. Puglia is most famous for its unique cuisine  (which is very vegetarian focused) , as well as its olive oil production.

fresh produce truck

Indeed, olive oil is more than just a Puglian pride, the region produces an impressive 40% of Italy’s annual olive production output, which is vital for jobs and its economy. Home to some 60 million olive trees (including ancient ones), this means that Puglia alone currently has one olive tree per person to Italy’s entire population.

Puglia has also earned the nickname the “breadbasket of Italy”, beyond its many agricultural riches, thanks to its fertile soil and hot, dry Mediterranean climate; it is one of the best places to produce wheat. For this reason, bread and pasta are staples in the Apulian diet.

40 Sayings & Quotes About Italy That Will Make You Want to Visit

Getting around.

Due to limited public transport and many remote or secluded locations in Puglia, the best way to explore the Italian region is by car. For this itinerary, you’ll need your own means of transport to see every destination mentioned.

Day 1 in Puglia

Acaya  .

Start your adventures in Puglia by exploring the small commune of Acaya, one of the few fortified villages left in Apulia. This small settlement dates back to the 16th century and is among one of the oldest villages in all of Italy.

Acaya is an enchanting, crumbling hamlet home to a mere 400-something residents and evokes a time warp as you wander through what feels like the Middle Ages.

One of the best things to visit while exploring Acaya is the Castello di Acaya, a masterpiece of military architecture. The Renaissance fortress was built between 1535–1536, and today, it houses a fascinating collection of archaeological artefacts.

acaya

Around a 20 to 30-minute drive from Acaya is an unmissable stretch of coastline where you can soak up some of the weird and wonderful rock formations that carve out Salento’s East coast.

Torre San’Andrea is a picturesque beach which is most popularly visited for its remarkable white rocky towers, or as they are geologically referred to as, sea stacks.

These fascinating cliffs have been shaped by the erosive powers of the Adriatic sea and wind for millions of years, beating against the malleable stone and forming natural archways and hidden coves.

torre sant andrea

Heading further down Italy’s heel you’ll find the Zinzulusa Caves which extend around 150 meters inward and stretch up to 15 metres high. These impressive caves were first officially discovered in 1793, though it’s likely that fishermen would have entered before this time.

Zinzulusa Caves are best known for their beauty and fascinating stalactites and stalagmites, which create visually interesting objects. Exploring the deep depths of the caves will bring you across the “Corridor of Wonders”, which is as enchanting as it sounds or the “Duomo”, where you may even spy some of the bats hanging out.

The caves are huge, and only part of the excavated portion of them can be explored by the public. You can only visit Grotta Zinzulusa by guided tour, which usually lasts around 30 minutes. Book a boat tour of the caves like this one.

Grotta Zinzulusa

Otranto

End your day in Italy’s easternmost town, Otranto, a delightful maze of cobbled streets, stunning vistas, and ancient fortifications. This Puglian city is best known for its proximity to the strait of Otranto, the stretch of water which connects the Adriatic Sea with the Ionian Sea and separates Italy from Albania.

Otranto is home to two UNESCO-listed sites, the old town ‘centro storico’ and the remains of its medieval castle. Some of the town’s unassuming ecclesial buildings include the Cathedral of Otranto, which is considered to be one of the largest it Italy and a fine piece of Romanesque architecture. It houses a 12th-century floor mosaic which depicts the ‘tree of life’.

otranto puglia italy

Spend your first evening in Puglia (and every evening after for that matter) the Italian way. ‘La passeggiata’ is a cultural tradition, especially in the smaller towns, which essentially just means an evening walk. The Italian “passeggiare” translates as “to stroll” and its an opportunity for locals to exercise in the Mediterranean fresh air as well as see one another and share the tranquil hours of the evening.

Spend a few hours shopping for Puglian delights or exploring the port area, before you head out for dinner in Otranto. Then you can choose from sushi joints to rooftop bars, with breathtaking views over the Adriatic sea and beyond. There’s no shortage of incredible nightlife experiences to have in Otranto. Read our guide on the best things to do in Otranto.

historic port otranto

If you have more time on your first day, then you could also consider checking out Grotta della Poesia, or as it’s translated into English ‘the Cave of Poetry’ . This grotto is a natural pool, surrounded by limestone cliffs and fed by sea water that tunnels in from the open sea.

It has been listed as one of the 10 most beautiful natural pools in the world by National Geographic. Though, it’s worth noting that this kind of destination is what comes to mind when thinking of the definition of over-tourism. However, if crowds don’t bother you then it’s definitely worth a trip! Read our guide on how to visit Grotta della Poesia here.

grotta della poesia

Day 2 in Puglia

Spend the morning exploring and embracing the fishing port city, Gallipoli. Located in the province of Lecce in Apulia, the city was formerly known as Kallipolli, which translates to mean ‘beautiful city’. It’s stunning old town sits on a tiny island in the centre and is connected to the rest of the settlement and its sprawling suburbs via a series of bridges.

Visitors to the Gallipoli of Puglia should ensure that they aren’t confused by the name ‘Gallipoli’; the name is also used for a peninsula in Turkey, which was the site of a WWI  military campaign.

Perhaps the most defining architectural feature of Gallipoli is that of its 13th-century fortified castle. Though the fortification dates back to the Middle Ages, it has seen several uses over the years.

The other striking landmark in old town Gallipoli is the city’s main ecclesiastical building. The cathedral of Saint Agatha was constructed between 1629 and 1696 to replace a previous church on site. It is built up from local stone in the beautiful and ornate Baroque style.

Just outside of the old centre is The Greek Fountain, an interesting architectural water feature that dates back to the 16th century and is intricately carved with mythical creatures and symbols of Gallipoli.

As one might expect from a town which was historically constructed on the fishing industry, one of the best places to get a true sense of Gallipoli is to head to the fish market. Selling fresh catch of the day, in southern Italy it’s not uncommon to eat raw seafood straight from the vendor. The “sushi of Italy” has been consumed since the 1500s, just be sure not to eat right in front of the market itself.

Need more convincing?

The Best Things To Do in Gallipoli

The very tip of the heel of Italy’s boot, and indeed the most southern point of the country, is found in the form of Santa Maria di Leuca, which is often abbreviated as just ‘Leuca’.

This area comprises the very end of Salento’s peninsula and is most famous for its striking white-washed lighthouse, which was constructed in the first half of the 18th century and stands 47 metres tall.

Another highlight to visit while exploring Leuca is the ecclesial building, the Basilica of Santa Maria De finibus terrae (at the ends of the earth). This beautiful 18th-century stone cathedral stands at a place where the Adriatic meets the Ionian Sea.

santa maria di leuca

The speck of a town that is Specchia boasts as being one of the most attractive towns in the region thanks to its honey-hued buildings, narrow streets, historic palace, and beautiful Baroque church.

Much of the interest in Specchia can be found centred around its main piazza, Piazza del Popolo. Like many  towns in Puglia , the settlement of Specchia centres itself around a ‘centro storico’ (historic old town) and it’s here where visitors will soon discover the most architecturally interesting and ancient buildings.

It’s worth noting that although much of the town has been renovated and restored over recent years, there’s an enchanting draw to Specchia that feels as though it could crumble away at any moment, and a chance to visit the town feels that bit more magical. Read our guide on the best things to do in Specchia.

Church of the Virgin Mary

Less than a half-hour drive away from Specchia, the wonderful town of Presicce which spreads out from one of the most beautiful Baroque churches you’ll ever see and is interspersed with piazzas, historic homes and most importantly, la panetterie (bakeries) and gelaterias (ice cream shops).

The true heart of the town lies underground. One of the biggest draws to Presicce is the 23 olive oil mills that are embedded below its historical centre, where the ancient presses and millstones are still preserved.

It’s worth taking a peek to truly understand the workings behind the process for which most of the region’s economy has long been based on.

In recent years, authorities in Presicce have been offering a sum of money to encourage people to live here, in hopes of breathing new life into a part of Italy which is slowly depopulating. So, if you fall in love with Presicce, you could be in with a chance of having your own Under the Tuscan Sun moment!

Presicce

End your day in the honey-hued historical city, Lecce, which is renowned worldwide for its Baroque architecture; as such the city is often referred to as ‘Signora del Barocco’ or ‘Lady of Baroque’. Thanks to the distinctive golden-yellow and malleable Lecce stone, which the city is built from, Lecce shines warm tones from morning till evening.

Lecce is also nicknamed “The Florence of the South”, however, unlike some of Italy’s bigger cities, where the architecture is much more refined and clean, Lecce’s architecture is angled, wonky and full of charm- every building wants to be seen!

Lecce is a city of art and churches, however, it was also once an entertainment hub, this can be seen through the two Roman sites which were uncovered in the 1930s. The Roman Amphitheatre and Roman Theatre of Lecce are well-preserved sites which offer a glimpse into the city’s past.

lecce amphitheatre

Another absolute must-see while in Lecce is Museo Faggiano. This museum houses a collection of bones, relics, pieces of ceramics and several artefacts that are believed to span over 2,000 years of archaeological history; all of which was accidentally discovered thanks to a leaky pipe when Luciano Faggiano was renovating for his restaurant.

Other fascinating places to visit in Lecce include the three ancient city gates, or as they are known in Italian ‘portas’ , the magnificent Lecce Duomo and the underground Jewish Museum which illustrates the history and lives of the Jewish community in the city.  Read our guide on the best things to do in Lecce.

Day 3 in Puglia

Start your morning by exploring one of the lesser-visited attractions of Puglia, a chaotic, yet fabulous and eccentric house museum created by artist, Vincenzo Maria Brunetti. Also known as Vincent’s Eremo or Vincent’s Hermitage, this brainchild, Alice in Wonderland-like palace is nestled in swathes of olive trees and found in Guagnano, where the artist was born.

Vincent is one of Salento’s colourful characters and a local celebrity. His hermitage is an explosion of creativity, where dreamlike visions, religious depictions and a strong influence from the hippie culture can be found in the form of mosaics, statues, and paintings.

For 20 years, Vincent has created an inspiring playground that can only be summed up as, an extraordinary piece of art. No matter where the eye is drawn, you’ll likely find it wandering away to the next part, as there’s so much to see here. Even upon arrival, you’ll find yourself staring at the facade for at least 10 minutes or more!

Vincent’s world opens up a new and playful perspective, and the philosophy of life he holds has been conveyed through his art. In a recent interview, he emphasises his joy for disco music (so it might be worth bringing headphones, if it’s not already playing in the house itself that is!)

In a world where art, religion and nature have been fused, Vincent’s Hermitage feels somewhat akin to Antony Guadì’s Parc Güell in Barcelona. Read our guide on how to visit Vincent’s house.

Let’s be honest, no trip to Puglia would be complete without visiting at least one vineyard. After all, Puglia is one of Italy’s oldest and most important wine regions and has a history of winemaking that dates back centuries.

Vast stretches of sun-kissed vineyards cover Apulia, to be precise the Puglia wine region covers 83,000 hectares of land, 80% of which is planted with red wine varieties of grape.

Some of the popular wines from Puglia include  Primitivo ,  Nero di Troia  and  Negroamaro , which are known for their velvet texture and richly intense flavours, typically of darker fruits like plums and blackberries, as well as spicy notes like black pepper.

To start your wine adventures, head to Cantine San Pancrazio, where you are taken through a journey of history, scents, production from vineyard to bottle and, of course, plenty of tasting! Cantine San Pancrazio Winery produce all colours of wine, including some sparkling.

San Vito dei Normani is a small Medieval town which you’ll only want to set aside a couple of hours to explore. Home to a handful of beautiful churches, including the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria and the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, there are also a few historic castles to visit.

For even more insight into Puglia’s renowned olive production, you can also visit The Museo dell’Olio, where you can learn about the process as well as sample some of the delicious golden liquid for yourself!

San Vito dei Normani

Next, head to Ostuni, which is known as the ‘White City’  (La Città Bianca in Italian)  thanks to the white-painted old town which crowns the very top of the city. Rising above a sea of olive groves and the twinkling Adriatic coastline, Ostuni was strategically built here to protect the town from invaders in centuries gone by.

The magnificent Duomo di Ostuni (Cathédrale Santa Maria Assunta) can be found at the highest point of the town. Its Romanesque architecture has blended with the Gothic style thanks to renovation works done after a significant earthquake in the 15th century.

One of the best things to do while exploring Ostuni is to simply get lost in its maze of little lanes and forgotten streets, allowing the town and its crumbling facades to slowly reveal themselves to you, layer by layer.  Read our guide on the best things to do in Ostuni , for more inspiration!

A Guide to the Best Things to do in Ostuni, Puglia

Spend your afternoon taking a (probably well-needed) respite from the heat and enjoy soaking in the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.

Torre Beach Pozzelle is the closest beach to Ostuni and aside from its obvious stunning beauty, one of the unique aspects to this beach is that you’re surrounded by the luscious green hillsides that roll down the landscape from the white-washed town.

End your day in Mesange, a town best known for its growing of grapes and olives! This unassuming town is a little quieter than some of the more popular ones, it’s for this reason that wandering around as a tourist here can feel as though you’ve accidentally happened upon a hidden gem.

Highlights of Mesagne include a Norman castle, several medieval churches, and a maze of streets that form its historic centre, or as it’s more beautifully pronounced in Italian, ‘centro storico’.

For dinner, I highly recommend reserving a table at Osteria Braceria Tigelleria Antico Forno. This cosy ristorante serves delicious traditional cuisine, which you can indulge in under the twinkling lights of the stars on their charming terrace.

Day 4 in Puglia

Start your day by exploring one of Puglia’s most underrated towns! Monopoli is a picturesque fishing town which lies on the southeast of Bari. The sleepy seaside town is known for its beautiful coastlines, hidden rocky caves and charming ambience.

Founded by the Greeks in 500 BC, “Monos polis”  derives from the Greek to mean unique and singular. Some of the best things to do in Monopoli include: exploring the old town and spying out the influences of the various cultures that have left their mark, going swimming out by the rocks like a local and people watching in Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Upon visiting the ancient harbour area, you’ll likely notice the 16th-century fortress, Castello Carlo V. This impressive fort was built during the Spanish domination of the town and was constructed to accommodate the Spanish military and their families. Read our guide on the best things to do in Monopoli here , for more inspiration!

porto antico

One of the most iconic and popular towns in all of the Puglia region can be found clinging to the cliff face, contrasted by the azure of the sea. Polignano a Mare is most famous for its incredible viewpoints and breathtaking beauty!

The best time to experience this small resort town is in the late afternoon when you can soak up the final hours of sun at the beach, indulge in a late lunch of traditional Apulian cuisine or sip on a refreshing Aperol spritz as you slowly let yourself absorb the definition of “good living”.

Some other highlights of Polignano a Mare include heading to the contemporary art museum of Fondazione Museo Pino Pascali and watching the world go by on the main square, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. Read our guide on the best things to do in Polignano a Mare .

church polignano a mare

Located just 3 miles from Polignano a Mare is the delightful town San Vito, which is centred around a little fishing harbour (known in Italian as the porto antico) The town itself remains somewhat of a hidden gem of the Puglian coastline.

One of the most popular things to visit is the Abbey of San Vito, a former monastery which sits on the waterfront and was built in the 10th century. Shrouded in legends, the story goes that in 801, the Princess of Salerno, Florenza, was drowning in the Sele River in Campania. But, she managed to escape from death thanks to St. Vito. In gratitude, the princess had the remains of St. Vito and his tutors taken to the abbey.

The town is sprinkled with little coves and beaches to explore, all of which make for the perfect evening passeggiata as you watch the sun melt into the horizon.

Day 5 in Puglia

Strada arco basso  (if time allows).

If there’s one street you should visit when exploring the gateway to Puglia, it’s Strada Arco Basso or, as it’s now more commonly referred to, Strada delle Orecchiette or The Pasta Street.

Found in the heart of Bari, a tradition which has been going on since the 1950s has become a ritual and way of life for the local women, who sit out daily, making and selling fresh pasta, mainly orecchiette, to passers-by.

Historically, while their husbands were out at sea, the women had to fend for themselves and make a living to get by. So, what better way than to rely on the humblest of ingredients that the region has been gifting them for centuries?

Over the years this pasta making community has become an act of solidarity, where passion and love is shared between the women who work here.

A wander down this street offers a glimpse into the coming together of tradition, as well as the joy and excitement that can be brought by the simplicity of semolina and water. Arrive no earlier than 10 am, but also no later, as the pasta here sells out fast!

Technically, these pasta-makers aren’t legally allowed to sell the pasta as there are no regulations, but as with much of southern Italy, you’ll find that tradition struggles against bureaucracy so much so that they will end up outlasting it. Although they cannot sell to restaurants, selling for personal use is loosely permitted.

Found on the outskirts of the bustling city of Bari is the quaint coastal village, Mola di Bari (referred to as Mola). An important historical sight to see is the impressive Castello Angioino, which protected the settlement for centuries, and was built in 1279. It stands as a stark reminder of the vulnerable position Puglian towns once had, lying along the coastline.

Another landmark and meeting point of the village is the Piazza XX Settembre, where a monumental fountain lies at the centre and is dedicated to the local sailors. The mother church of Mola is a beautiful 13th-century Romanesque building that can be found in the old quarter.

The greatest way to experience Mola is to simply wander around, soak up the history and enjoy the peaceful pocket of life that exists just outside of the region’s main transport city.

mola di bari

Another sleepy town on the outskirts of Bari which is worth visiting is Conversano, an ancient commune best known for its cherries. Ciliegia Ferrovia , which translates to “Railway Cherry,” is the variety of cherry that grows here between mid-May to early June. The fruit is celebrated annually on the final weekend of May at the Cherry Festival.

One of the most striking architectural features in the town itself is the beautiful Monastero di San Benedetto, which dates back to the 6th century. You’ll likely only need an hour or two to wander around this settlement.

conversano

End your day by visiting the nearby and fascinating Castellana Caves. A complex karst cave system where shards of limestone pierce out the ceiling, and piles of stalactite and stalagmite formations form the kind of surreal landscape you only see in cinema.

Castellana Caves are Italy’s longest natural subterranean network and they comprise several “rooms”. The main cave is known as La Grave (as abyss), the others being Black Cavern (Caverna Nera), White Cave (Grotta Bianca) and Precipice Cavern (Caverna del Precipizio).

As with most of the cave systems in Italy, you’ll have to book a guided tour to go around. The tour typically takes 50 minutes, and you’ll explore around 1 km into the depths of the caves.

Day 6 in Puglia

Start your day in one of the most popular (and busiest) towns of the region, Alberobello. This quintessentially Apulian town is a charming settlement where the traditional trulli dwellings reside by one another in harmony, standing as the perfect picturesque scene of life in southern Italy.

This is a particularly special place to visit if you have specific interests in Apulian architecture. Alberobello is home to Trullo Sovrano, which translates as ‘king’ or ‘ruler’ and stands as the only two-story trulli in the town.

Trulli (or singular, trullo) are traditional Italian dwellings that are typically built from a dry construction method, made up of stones. During the 14th century, when property taxes were high, Trulli came in handy, as residents could simply remove their roof when the taxman did his rounds, and rebuild it once he went again.

These beloved structures have become synonymous with the region; thanks to their use of prehistoric building techniques, they are considered to be so important that UNESCO has designated the buildings in Puglia as part of its World Heritage List.

Another important historical building with an interesting past is the Casa D’Amore, which was built in 1797 and was the first house in the area to include terracotta & mortar in its façade.

It’s worth emphasising that Alberobello can be extremely busy, so if you plan to visit (especially during peak season), I suggest aiming to get here as early as possible. The crowds can swell making the experience of the town is somewhat non existent as you have to battle through people to see the main sights.

Alberobello

Home to a population of around 11,600 residents, Cisternino is a tiny Puglia settlement that offers unparalleled views over the Itria Valley. For some of the best vistas in town, visitors need simply to head to Cremeria History Vignola which serves light snacks, drinks, and other refreshments.

Cisternino is indeed one of a trifecta of delightful towns in central Puglia; Martina Franca, Locorotondo, and Cisternino are all a stone’s throw away from one another (all within 10 km of one another).

Martina Franca is the largest of the three towns and, as a result, has the largest selection of eateries, as well as the biggest old town. Pick up a tourist map for free from the tourist office  (Piazza XX Settembre n. 3, 74015 Martina Franca Italy)  , and you’ll soon discover that there are several self-guided routes to follow.

One of the greatest joys while exploring Martina Franca has to be simply marvelling at the stunning Baroque architecture.

When it comes to eating in the Puglia town, there is no shortage of options. We personally loved our meal at the well-reviewed La Tavernatta. The dishes were well-cooked simple and local Italian cuisine such as pasta dishes served with local wine.

End your day in the white-washed gem Locortondo, where a glass of the sparkling wine, Bianco Locorotondo tastes best! Sitting perched on a hilltop among swathes of olive groves, the picturesque little town of Locorotondo has often been nicknamed the “round place” due to its circular structure.

Simply wandering around the labyrinth of narrow streets and allowing the town to slowly reveal itself to you is one of the best ways to experience Locorotondo. For the best viewpoint in town, head to the spot known as Lungomare, which boasts breathtaking views overlooking the Itria Valleyand, where huge stretches of vineyards and olive groves sprawl across the landscape.

A particular highlight while visiting Locrotondo is seeing Trullo Marziolla, which dates back to 1559 and is believed to be the oldest traditional dwelling of its kind.

End your evening in town by indulging in the local cuisine (and wine!) Apulian cuisine is renowned for its vegetable-focused dishes and simplicity, one of the best dishes to sample while in Locrotondo is Eggplant Parmigiana , which originated in the town.

Locorotondo

Day 7 in Puglia

Your final day in Puglia will be spent exploring just the two cities, giving you a chance to soak up the region’s beauty at a more leisurely pace for the last time… that is, until you inevitably return.

Taranto is known as the ‘city of two seas’ thanks to its location between the Ionian Sea and an inland basin named the Mar Piccolo. Historically, this destination has quite a tumultuous past, having been used at one time as a huge naval port, full of warships and submarines, which ended up being striked in November 1940.

Today, Taranto remains a bustling hive of activity and is the second-largest city in Puglia. Offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history, traces of Greek, French and the Normans can be found to have left their mark here.

Right in the heart of the city lies The Cattedrale di San Cataldo, a beautiful 11th-century Baroque-style cathedral with  Byzantine influence. Another important landmark to visit is the 15th century Aragonese Castle, which was built by King Ferdinand of Aragon. During the 18th century the fortress was used as a prison.

If you’re looking for somewhere traditional, no-fuss and plain delicious to eat, consider having lunch at Trattoria L’Orologio. This beautiful stone-vaulted restaurant serves delicious Apulian cuisine, including the freshest of seafood. Taranto is particularly famed for its “cozze” (mussels).

If you fancy seeing a little more history before leaving the city, head to the National Archaeological Museum. This museum houses a collection of Greek, Roman and Apulian artefacts that illustrate the city’s rich cultural heritage.

Nearby Taranto is a small town built atop a rock of limestone that is synonymous with ceramics. Grottaglie is one of the thirty Italian towns which is allowed to use the official designation, as such the city has been nicknamed ‘Citta di Ceramiche’ (City of Ceramics).

Not only this, but Grottaglie takes its name from the fact that the countryside surrounding it is littered with deep ravines, opening into the limestone surface and creating beautiful caverns. The origin of these caves dates back to the Palaeolithic age, though most of what is seen today is when they were inhabited in the Middle Ages.

One of the best things to do while exploring Grottaglie is to discover ceramics in the ceramics quarter. As a destination where this tradition has been ongoing for over 1,000 years, there are several family run ceramic shops selling all kinds of treasures, and even making pottery before your very eyes!

There’s also the Museo della Ceramica, which is a museum showcasing the history and importance of this craft. And, if you want to get your hands deep into clay and learn for yourself, you could even consider taking a ceramics workshop. Book a workshop like this one.

Other sights in the town include Casa Vestita, a beautiful artistic residence and gardens and the Monastero di Santa Chiara, which dates back to the 16th century and is adjoined to a church.

If you have more time…

If time allows, or you wish to visit instead, opt to head to Matera (though technically not in the Apulia region) the city is found in Southern Italy, located on the border of Basilicata and Puglia.

Historically Puglia is Italy’s poorest region. Matera is one of those destinations where poverty and hardship are a recent memory, and it’s important to know this before visiting. The ravine city was once dubbed ‘the shame of Italy’, and was a place where less than 70 years ago people were crammed into cave houses, dying of hunger and disease.

Today, Matera is Italy’s ancient archaeological gem, known as the ‘City of Caves’ . It is the third oldest city in the world  (after Aleppo and Jericho)  and is known for its ancient habitations and as such has been hailed with the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Read our guide on How to Visit Matera & The Best Things to Do

For this itinerary, we suggest spending your first four nights based in Lecce and then the remaining three nights in the Itria Valley. Here are suggestions of where to stay based on places we have been to ourselves (twice now!):

Lecce – Torre Del Parco – Situated just a 10-minute walk from Lecce’s Old Town. There are only a few rooms in the hotel, and it was super relaxing. There are several courtyard areas to relax in, and they offer a delicious breakfast. Check prices and availability here .

Itria Valley (Locorotondo) – Trulli Pentassuglia – This is a great base for which to explore the Itria Valley, plus you get to stay in a traditional trullo! We booked the accommodation via the Airbnb website, it’s a family run guesthouse where the owners are living on site, renting out their extra trullo.

One Night in a Natural Cave Hotel in the Ancient Sassi of Matera, Italy

One Night in a Natural Cave Hotel in the Ancient Sassi of Matera, Italy

small group tours puglia italy

Welcome to One Night In , a series about staying in the most unparalleled places available to rest your head.

My mother had two requests for her birthday trip to Italy. The first was to visit our long-lost relatives in Puglia. The second was to spend the night in a fancy hotel. That’s what brought us to Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita , an 18-room albergo diffuso ("scattered hotel") built into centuries-old caves in the mountainside city of Matera in southern Italy.

Evidence of human settlements in Matera’s natural caves, known as the Sassi, trace back to the Paleolithic era. Though it wasn’t all that long ago that the prehistoric caverns served as homes for many thousands of the city’s residents, with rock-hewn churches and cemeteries mixed in among the calcarenite houses. In 1945, Italian activist Carlo Levi wrote about the appalling, deprived living conditions in the overcrowded Sassi, earning Matera’s cave complexes the nickname la vergogna nazionale ("the shame of the nation")—and its citizens an eviction notice. In 1950, Italy’s prime minister instituted an ill-conceived plan to relocate the Sassi’s entire population to new housing developments outside the city, and the abandoned cave networks went into disrepair. But after a slew of restoration and preservation efforts in the 1980s, and a 1993 UNESCO World Heritage Site designation , the first cave hotels started to open in Matera, with renovation oversight by conservation experts. In the decades since, the same caves that were once the locus of Italian shame have played a major role in the city’s tourism boom and economic prosperity .

Now, I’ll admit to a degree of skepticism about the comfort of sleeping inside a rocky grotto, and I was a little dubious about whether the hotel stay would lean toward kitsch, or feel uncouth (even with the architectural direction from Pritzker Prize winner David Chipperfield and the aforementioned preservation oversight). All the more reason to find out.

Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is located in the oldest part of the prehistoric cave-dwelling districts of Matera, Italy, known as the Sassi.

Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is located in the oldest part of the prehistoric cave-dwelling districts of Matera, Italy, known as the Sassi.

8 a.m.: My family and I are on the road to Matera after grabbing a cappuccino and croissant at a cafe called Almond. We’ve been in Italy for three days already and are anxious for a change of scenery from the lush Puglian countryside to the rocky Basilicata region. We are exhausted. Miles of windmills dot the landscape to our right. We try to identify where the line of them ends, but every time we think we’ve seen the last, another spinning needle reveals itself in the distance. We argue about the Italian word for cow. I nod in and out of sleep.

10:30 a.m.: We arrive in what we will soon understand to be "new" Matera—the part of the city erected after the Italian government’s 1950 mandate to evacuate the Sassi. There is a narrow green space between two main roads where cyclists skirt traffic and old men sit on benches. This is where the parking garage that Sextantio has directed us to leave our car and wait for the pickup shuttle is located. I press my forehead against the window to try and catch a glimpse of the Matera I’ve seen in pictures, a honeycomb of sand-colored rock structures clustered in a jagged heap, but wherever it is, it’s blocked by a series of plaster facades.

We pack into the pickup van with a couple who has just flown in from Florida. I ask how they decided on Sextantio; the woman replies that they "wanted to do the cave thing." I get my first peek at the old city as we zigzag through streets that raise caution for a vehicle of our size. After about 10 minutes, we arrive.

The albergo diffuso ("scattered hotel") comprises 18 guest rooms in restored natural caverns, as well as a common space with a dining area in a rupestrian church.

The  albergo diffuso  ("scattered hotel") comprises 18 guest rooms in restored natural caverns, as well as a common space with a dining area in a rupestrian church.

11 a.m.: A robot with two conveyor belts for legs and a crate for luggage carries our bags up several stone steps to the reception area. (Historic sites and 21st-century luxuries can coexist.) The hotel has no "lobby" per se, only a large outdoor space with rustic furniture—Sextantio’s own piazza . When I arrive, a woman sips a cappuccino at a table with a lone bench that looks out onto Alta Murgia National Park opposite the hotel. I step inside a chamber on the piazza marked "Reception."

My first impression from inside one of Matera’s cave dwellings, aside from the 30-second period of blindness I experience while my eyes adjust to the lack of sun, is how lovely it smells in the calcarenite room. I look around to find the source and spot wooden diffusers in a wall divot. Scentless candles light up many of the cave’s natural nooks. Classical music echoes off the high ceilings. I walk past another guest and she recommends I take the hotel’s weaving class. I lament that I will not have the time.

11:30 a.m: My family and I decide to explore the city and find lunch while we wait for our rooms to be prepared. As we trundle up the stairs toward a level street, we pass a group of German tourists who have stopped at a nearby lookout. I hear the guide refer to Sextantio by name and take note that our hotel merits mention. Considering the 18 guest rooms are individual caves carved into a singular rock face, it is not entirely clear where the hotel grounds begin and end. A small public walkway veins through the cluster of accommodations, while small metal gates distinguish each as its own property. (Later, while donning a robe and slippers, I’ll wave to a pair of tourists peering over said gate, perhaps wondering if my room is a gift shop.)

The hotel rooms are carved into the calcarenite (limestone) rock.

The hotel rooms are carved into the calcarenite (limestone) rock.

2 p.m.: We have sandwiches outside a restaurant where Bruno Mars plays on repeat. An errant rock falls from a nearby roof and a gaggle of policemen caution us to move tables. I receive a text saying that our room is ready and we head back to the hotel. On the way to our room, we’re shown inside the rupestrian church turned hotel dining room , as well as a monastery chapel recently discovered on the property and left untouched—a peek into the dark, rough-walled caves of yore.

Our room is a little less of yore, but not without it. Sextantio’s accommodations offer modern comforts like porcelain bathtubs and plush mattresses, but most of the furniture is sourced from the original caves. Ours has one king bed and two twins, all rudimentary wooden bed frames with slim metal legs. The rocky floors feel textured under my bare feet as I unpack my luggage. I accidentally brush against one of the unadorned stone walls and leave a small trail of sediment in my wake.

Then, I settle into one of the beds for what will be one of the deepest naps of my life. The rest of my family follows suit.

2:50 p.m.:  We are jolted awake by my phone’s alarm and clamber outside for our scheduled walking tour in a hazy delirium. Somehow, we make it on time. One of our stops is a small cave church where an older man dressed in traditional clothing plays a song for us on a putipù, a friction drum typical to the region. He shares that he was born in Matera before the cave settlements were evacuated, and this is the church he frequented as a child.

6 p.m.: After a long tour up, down, and around Matera’s sinuous streets, we remember that the hotel offers an aperitivo until 7. Persuaded by the prospect of an Aperol spritz and charcuterie board, we head downstairs to the piazza. Our taglieri arrives as an aesthetic array of local meats and cheeses decorated with prunes, dates, and two different types of jams. In addition to our spritzes, we order a fennel tea—an unexpected crowd favorite. Already full, we head to a restaurant for dinner, and then, stuffed, to a gelateria for dessert.

Each of the cave dwellings maintains its original shape.

Each of the cave dwellings maintains its original shape.

8 a.m.: I open our heavy wooden shutters to a spectacular view of the Murgia across the canyon. I can make out the sound of clanging cowbells from the mucche grazing in the nearby valley. Birds fly at our window level, the city high enough to match their gliding altitude. We start to pack our bags for 11 a.m. checkout.

9 a.m.: The hotel breakfast is served buffet-style. This is not, however, your typical waffle-machine continental. Cured meats and fresh cheeses fill one table; an array of savory and sweet breads on another. There’s also a (largely neglected) basket of hard-boiled eggs. We take our plates and sit outside. A waitress named Vita comes to our table to take our drink orders: quattro cappuccini, per piacere.

When Vita returns with our coffees, we strike a conversation and discover that she has been working at the hotel for over a decade. She teaches the weaving class that I heard about from the other guest at check-in. It’s a shame we won’t be able to take the class, I tell her. Vita tsks her tongue, asks us to wait where we are, and disappears. She returns holding a key. "Let’s go," she says, motioning us up the stairs toward the cavern that houses the loom. On the way, I sidestep the luggage robot. It’s being loaded with a new bundle of carry-ons from a fresh group of guests ready to "do the cave thing."
