Clubs are the primary collectible item in PGA TOUR Golf Shootout , and its biggest gameplay feature.

Each player starts the game with a few clubs and more are granted through the game's tutorial . Additional clubs are collected by opening card packs , buying cards from the Pro Shop , or buying in-app purchase bundles . Some clubs are available to players by default, and additional clubs become available to earn and use as you increase your player level by gaining XP .

  • 5 Special Abilities
  • 6 Club Levels
  • 7 List of Clubs

Each club in the game falls into one of six types , reflecting real-world categories of golf clubs. Each category of club is a particular archetype that determines its general performance on the course, including strengths and weaknesses.

  • Putters are clubs that shoot along the ground and work best near the pin on the green.
  • Drivers work best from the tee and shoot for long distances.
  • Woods are best hit from the fairway for long, straight, accurate shots.
  • Hybrids are a cross between woods and irons, accumulating many of the strengths and weaknesses of both types.
  • Irons shoot for shorter distances but are very versatile and work great in unfavorable terrain .
  • Wedges hit the ball high, but not far, and are typically used near the green to chip in the ball.

Rarities [ ]

Every club has a rarity indicating how easy or difficult it is to collect through various means. A club's rarity doesn't have a direct impact on its stats or performance, and some of the most commonly used clubs by avid players fall into the lower rarities.

The rarities a club can have are:

Each collectible club in the game belongs to one of six fictional manufacturer brands (except for clubs of mythical rarity , which have no brand). Each brand has a persona that its clubs typically fall into. In many cases a particular brand's clubs have properties that make them work well together with other clubs of the same brand. The most lucrative solo challenges require a player to use an entire bag consisting of a single brand's clubs.

  • Corvid clubs specialize in defying physics and wind.
  • Forester clubs gain bonuses depending on their proximity to trees.
  • PALO clubs excel at tackling unfavorable terrain.
  • Ryusei clubs have unique special abilities that enhance themselves and adjacent clubs.
  • Stanchion clubs are among the most powerful, but they can be unpredictable and hard to control.
  • Willoughsby clubs have average stats but get great stat bonuses when used in conjunction with each other.

A club's stats are the primary measure of its performance on the golf course. Most clubs have a power , control , and spin stat, except for putters which only have power and control.

  • Power determines how far a club can hit a golf ball in comparison to other clubs of its type. However, how the power stat affects ball flight distance varies widely among club types. For instance, a driver with a relatively low power stat can still hit a ball much further from the tee than an iron or wedge of the same numerical power.
  • A club's control is a measure of how accurate it is, and affects multiple aspects of hitting the ball. A higher control stat makes it easier to hit a ball accurately, and gives you a better indication of where the ball will actually land when hit. A high control stat will also add more "forgiveness" to badly missed shots, sending them less off-course.
  • Draw and fade is how much you are able to curve the ball's flight path to the left or right of center when hitting. A high draw or fade can be very useful in setting up strong approach shots or curving your ball around aerial obstacles. A club's spin stat affects draw (left curve) and fade (right curve) equally.
  • Groundspin is how much a ball can roll along the course surface after landing. Groundspin is most useful on or around the green when you want to apply a bit of extra distance on a shot, or make sure a shot stops where you want it to. Groundspin often doesn't have a noticeable effect on other terrain types. Top spin (causing a ball to roll forward) is typically much more pronounced than back spin (causing a ball to roll backwards).

Clubs typically excel in only one or two stats out of the three, requiring players to make hard decisions and trade-offs about which clubs to use. Some clubs have very low relative stats overall among clubs in their category, but make up for this otherwise low performance with powerful special abilities .

The stats of a club usually increase at a steady pace as they level up, but the distribution of stats will generally be the same for a low-level club as it will be for a maxed-out club.

Special Abilities [ ]

Every club has at least one special ability, ranging from simple stat boosts to themselves or other clubs, to extreme powers that defy the laws of physics. Some special abilities are shared among clubs of a particular type or brand, while others are completely unique to a single club. Special abilities may affect only the club that holds the ability, clubs adjacent in the bag, clubs in a bag that fit a particular criteria, or all clubs in a bag.

Special abilities may increase in effectiveness over time as a club levels up, or be affected in real-time by factors on the course such as wind, terrain, nearby objects, or the club you hit with last. Some special abilities are locked and not available until a club reaches a certain level.

Some examples of special abilities clubs can have are:

  • Brand Loyalty , giving a bonus to the club based on adjacent clubs in a player's bag that share a brand.
  • Bag Wind Resist , giving additional resistance to the effects of wind on ball flight, no matter which club in the bag made the hit.
  • Control Boost , giving a bonus to the control stat of the immediately adjacent left club.
  • Magnetism , causing the ball to be sucked toward the hole within a certain radius around it.
  • Chain abilities, giving a stat bonus to the next club fitting a certain criteria after hitting with the club that carries the ability.

Club Levels [ ]

Each club is first collected by a player at a certain level based on its rarity, and levels up over time to a maximum level of 12.

Clubs are leveled up by earning a certain number of cards per level, then paying coins to perform the upgrade to the next level. When a club levels up, either its stats or special abilities will increase. A club may also gain new special abilities when it reaches a certain level.

The number of cards and amount of coins required to reach each new level threshold is based on a club's current level and rarity.

List of Clubs [ ]

As of update 2.2.0 , there are 51 total clubs to collect across the different types , rarities , and brands .

PGA TOUR Golf Shootout Guide: Tips, Cheats & Tricks to Level Up Fast

By: Author Sean O'Reilly

Posted on Last updated: April 27, 2019

Any self-respecting fan of golf should know what the PGA Tour is all about. That is why it comes as no surprise that PGA TOUR Golf Shootout has quickly become one of the top sports games since it was launched. Available on Android and iOS platforms, the game lets you experience what it is like to participate in the PGA Tour competition. You can sink birdies and hit holes in one in perfectly manicured courses.

Enjoy the stunningly realistic visuals are you compete in the most respected tournaments in golf. You can hone your skills by taking on the TPC courses in single-player mode while completing multiple Daily challenges. If you’re feeling a bit competitive, you can go against some of the best players around the world in Versus mode. There is a lot of content waiting to be unlocked, and you will need the help of our PGA TOUR Golf Shootout tips, cheats and tricks to get them all for free!

1. What Are Levels For?

You are probably wondering why there is a level system in a sports game like PGA TOUR Golf Shootout. First off, you get to have bragging rights as a veteran player if you have a higher level. More importantly, however, you gain access to more features of the game. Even though the game can be downloaded for free, a lot of its content is locked behind level requirements. You will need to level up quickly in order to fully enjoy everything that the game has to offer.

pga tour golf shootout tips

The level system also isn’t like more other games where you just keep playing and you automatically get experience for nearly every tap you make on the screen. Here you need to level up golf clubs in order to gain experience. You will have to put in a lot of work if you don’t want to spend real money in order to level up.

2. How To Level Up Clubs

If you are familiar with games like Clash Royale , you would be able to understand the club levels more quickly. Clubs are acquired mostly through opening packs. When you open a pack, you will see a countdown timer. You will need to wait until the timer reaches zero in order to get the contents of the pack. You can spend real money to skip the countdown timer, but that would be a waste. Packs contain random cards, so you will need to open up a lot of them in order to get what you need.

To level up a club in PGA TOUR Golf Shootout you need silver coins and enough duplicate cards of that club. You gain experience every time you level up a card, but the costs for the next level also increases. The good news is that you get access to even better clubs while you grind for experience. This makes you stronger while allowing you to unlock more content.

3. Open More Packs

Since the contents of packs are random, you won’t always get what you need to level up your clubs. That is why you need to open up as many packs as you can. If you have unlocked Challenges, you should complete all that you can in order to get more packs. Some Challenges reward you with packs that can be opened instantly. You should also check on your Clubhouse rewards for more packs.

If you are tired of waiting around for packs to open, you can speed up the process by spending premium currency. You get some premium currency for free from time to time, so you won’t have to spend real money. A better way to speed up packs, however, is by watching video advertisements.

4. Claim Your Freebies

When you have free time, you should drop by the in-game store. You can watch video advertisements from the store in order to get some freebies. Tap on the Free Rewards button at the bottom of the screen to watch the ads. This is an easy way to gain resources needed for upgrading your clubs. Try to watch a few videos every day in order to maximize your resource gain. You can watch up to five ads per day, and we recommend that you watch all of them because you get premium currency after the fifth video.

pga tour golf shootout tricks

Another freebie that you can get your hands on comes every 24 hours. You can claim this from the game’s main screen, and it can be opened without having to wait for timers. Even if you don’t have time to play for the day, make sure you still try to log in every 24 hours to claim your free reward.

Finally, you get free packs whenever you win in Versus mode. These are timed packs, so make sure you open them up as soon as you can. You should also set an alarm in order to claim them as soon as their timer is done. You can only have one pack queued up to open at any given time. That means every second that there isn’t a new pack queued up is wasted.

5. Improve Your FedEx Cup Rank

Gold is the premium currency in PGA TOUR Golf Shootout. Every pack you open has a small chance of containing some Gold. We also mentioned earlier that you can get some more gold by watching five ads per day. If you want more Gold, however, you will need to increase your FedEx Cup Rank. You can do this by simply playing more matches against other players. The game gives out rank rewards at the end of each season. The reward pack you get improves every 10 ranks. The better the reward, the more cards, coins, and Gold you will get when the season ends.

6. Play In Solo Mode

Everyone wants to play live PVP games, but there is some benefit to playing in solo mode. Aside from providing you a good way to practice your shots, you also earn a decent amount of loot in clearing single-player stages. This will help you level up more clubs and raise your player level even faster. Remember, the key to leveling up is getting as many resources as you can, even if it means playing against the AI once in a while.

7. How To Win Matches

How good you are in the game influences how fast you level up since you need to keep winning in order to get more cards, coins, and Gold. While the game relies heavily on skill, there are still a few things you can do to improve your chances of winning matches. First off, understand how the game works. Before you take a shot, you will need to choose a club. The game sets a default one for you, but you can choose a different one if you like. The game’s recommendation is usually a solid choice, so switch only if you know what you’re doing.

Once you have a club selected, you can drag on the ball to get a bird’s eye view of the course and see where your ball will most likely go. Keep in mind that wind and other conditions can still affect the final position of your ball. You can also influence the behavior of the ball by choosing where to first touch it before you drag. Touching the top side of the ball will give it a topspin, allowing it to bounce and roll when it lands. Touching the bottom side will make it roll backwards depending on the surface it touches.

pga tour golf shootout guide

Clubs also have a great impact on your gameplay. That’s the whole point of collecting them and leveling them up. They have different basic stats and special abilities. Make sure you pay attention to the descriptions before making your choice. You should also have multiple bags assembled, so you can switch between them depending on the kind of course you get. For example, if you are up against a narrow par 3 course, you should pick a Driver with higher accuracy. Power isn’t needed as much since it’s a smaller course. Packing bags with clubs that are designed for specific courses make it easier for you to gain the upper hand during a match. You get to have two bag slots for free. If you have the extra currency, you can unlock even more. For now, you can stick to one bag for smaller courses, and another for bigger ones.

A final tip for winning more games is to stop yourself from getting tilted. Golf is just as much a mental game than anything else. If you get a bad shot, don’t give up right away. If you’re lucky, your opponent might mess up even worse, giving you a chance to catch up. Even if you don’t win, you still have the chance of getting a tie. The game gives out Tie Tokens which gives you the chance to earn better packs if you win next time.

Leveling up in PGA TOUR Golf Shootout is easy, especially when you rely on the tips, cheats and tricks we have listed above! If you have anything to add, don’t hesitate to let us know using the comment box below!

Ratings and Reviews

Almost there. 3d course shots has potential but crashes / doesn’t load.

The reason to use the AVP version of the PGA Tour app is the 3D view of the course / holes. The problem is that it crashes and then no easy way to restore the 3D view. Sometimes the button is not even there. Closing the app does not work, power cycling the AVP does until the 3D course view crashes again which pretty much every other shot if you are trying to follow a player. Sometimes it is difficult to also move the 3D course view window. There is a pop up window with more shot detail that pops up into the 3D course view that seems a bit odd. The AVP PGA Tour pro is a cool add on but it just needs some polish. Almost there…

From the grounds: Sights and sounds from 2 days of Presidents Cup prep

The prep is done and the practice is over. It's time for the Presidents Cup to start.

But first, here's a random assortment of sights and sounds from the grounds at Royal Montreal ahead of Thursday's opening tee shot.

Royal Montreal

It's tough to gauge how players feel about Royal Montreal as a venue.

Sahith Theegala called it "boring in a good way," and Scottie Scheffler said, "It's a pretty simple golf course for the most part."

Those aren't exactly rave reviews.

However, there were some positives said about the course.

"I really like it," said Max Homa. "It's very interesting. The front nine is incredibly different from the back. The greens are interesting."

We'll have to wait and see how it plays throughout the week. All that really matters in a match-play setting is whether or not the course provides drama, which it should since the finishing stretch starting from No. 14 has plenty of risk-reward shots that could be match-deciders.

This is fun

One of the biggest takeaways from two days of practice is how much the players seem to be enjoying themselves.

Does Sungjae Im look concerned about which player may leave the PGA TOUR next or how the current state of men's professional golf will repair itself? Not at all.

Gangnam Style Sungjae is the best Sungjae. #IntlTeam pic.twitter.com/D7RRpdFHij — Presidents Cup International Team (@IntlTeam) September 25, 2024

The vibe on the American side is no different. According to several different American team members, the team room is full of non-stop laughs, and the class clowns of the team are perhaps the least suspecting players.

Xander Schauffele and Scheffler - the two best players in the world - are apparently the ones loosening the mood in the American team room, not someone like Homa, whose reputation on social media would lead you to believe he's the one with all the jokes.

In a time when tournaments are usually riddled with dialogue about money, rival tours, a divided game, etc., this week is providing a cleanse from all the outside noise.

Presidents Cup's place

The Presidents Cup is often considered a Ryder Cup rip-off created from thin air. While the first part may be true (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery), nothing about this event feels manufactured.

There's no denying the Presidents Cup's history doesn't run as deep as the Ryder Cup's, but the passion and focus that are so obvious to see in the players and captains suggest it means equally as much. The Americans don't want to be the first team since 1998 to lose, and the Internationals so badly want their losing streak to end.

As a longtime Presidents Cup critic, always looking for ways to tweak the event to make it better, attending the event has been eye-opening. Nothing about this tournament needs to change.

Palpable buzz

The Canadian crowds are already showing out despite the rainy weather and cold temperatures. There were head-turning cheers from the galleries surrounding a couple of holes, mainly when a Canadian player hit a close shot or made their way to the green.

If two days of practice-round action are indicative of what's to come, the fans in Montreal are ready to support their fellow countrymen and the International team.

The International shield

pga tour game app

It's hard to envision the International team competing without a logo, but they did so for 12 editions of the Presidents Cup. Yes, it's just a made-up logo created in 2019, but the International team would still be searching for an identity without it.

It's been proven difficult to bring a group of players from different countries together, but now in its third event, the shield Ernie Els developed does exactly that. Watching the Internationals enter the practice area as a unit, donning the shield while wearing all black with hints of yellow, solidified the fact that the International team logo is helping to unify this group.

Is NBC calling the shots?

It was discovered while speaking to a volunteer at the 14th hole - a short par 4 at a pivotal section on the course - that NBC, the broadcaster of this year's Presidents Cup, is trying to put its thumb on the scale by requesting the hole be drivable.

There's a tee deck available that would make the hole roughly 300 yards and reachable by everyone in the event. The PGA TOUR has the final say in course setup, but if its media partner requests the hole be shortened to increase drama down the stretch, the TOUR may have no choice but to oblige.

Instilling knowledge

Mackenzie Hughes was third on the PGA TOUR in strokes gained: around the greens in 2024, yet he spent several minutes with Els in a greenside bunker on the 14th hole discussing how to play a certain shot.

On the same hole, International assistant captain Camilo Villegas shared his knowledge on how to judge a lie in the rough with Si Woo Kim. The two discussed the slight differences between a couple of lies after Kim's approach shot into the green didn't react how he intended.

This is only a tiny sample of the knowledge sharing occurring during team competition weeks. Players - especially rookies like Hughes - are soaking up everything they can learn from their teammates and captains. Witnessing knowledge get handed down to a younger generation of pros is fun to watch.

You wouldn't know Montreal lost its MLB team 20 years ago based on the number of Expos logos on the property at Royal Montreal. Hats, jerseys, shirts - you name it. The beloved Expos are clearly missed.
