he Tokyo International Film Festival is one of Asia’s largest film festivals, bringing together outstanding films from around the world. Held annually in late October, the main venues this year are once again in Hibiya, Yurakucho, Marunouchi, and Ginza . 7-Day in Tokyo Autumn Itinerary (Nov-Dec)

Visiting Tokyo in autumn can be very rewarding, not only because of its beautiful parks and gardens but also for fun things to see and do. Are you interested in exploring its top sightseeing destinations this autumn?

Leaves change their color across Tokyo from as early as late-October all the way through early December . Peak season is generally considered to be the end of November to early December .

If you are not sure how to plan a trip to Tokyo in autumn , then follow this suggested itinerary that we are going to share with you here in this article, and we hope you will have a very good time in and around Tokyo this coming autumn foliage season .

Day 1 – Explore the places around Asakusa

Asakusa is my favorite area to stay in Tokyo. Instead of staying around Shinjuku or Shibuya, you should stay your nights in the Asakusa area of Tokyo city. Located within a walking distance of Kuramae Station on the Oedo Subway Line , this hotel in Asakusa is where I stay whenever I travel to Tokyo.

When you are in Asakusa, be sure to spend your morning time by taking a leisurely stroll along the Sumida River Walk (Part of Sumida Park) . This area is home to some of the most beautiful views of Tokyo Skytree , Japan’s tallest tower at 634 meters.

As you walk along the river, you will have great photo opportunities of Tokyo Skytree, Sumida River, and trains crossing the bridge over the Sumida River .

After spending a good time walking along the river, head towards the iconic Sensoji Temple . This is one of the best temples in Tokyo that you must visit and explore. Sensoji, the ancient Buddhist temple, is a must on any Tokyo itinerary , so explore each temple building, including the 5 story pagoda, garden, statues, gates, and halls you see there.

Another interesting attraction in Asakusa is Nakamise Shopping Street . This approximately 250m long approach leads you to the temple complex of Sensoji, filled with shops of different kinds. You will find many shops selling cute souvenirs and street foods.

Want to ride a rickshaw in Tokyo? There is no better place to enjoy this sort of popular cultural experience than in Asakusa. It is a fun and great way to explore the neighborhood of charming Asakusa and interact with a local guide.

Your next stop is Tokyo Skytree ! Watch the amazing sunset views from the observation decks of Tokyo Skytree. In fact, the view from the top is absolutely gorgeous no matter which direction you stare at.

Day 2 – Enjoy a Day trip to Lake Kawaguchiko to see the Majestic Mount Fuji

Today you will be heading to Yamanashi Prefecture either by bus or train, where you will visit some nice spots to enjoy the views of Mount Fuji.

The main attractions are: Chureito Pagoda, and Oishi Park.

To access Lake Kawaguchiko , you should take the Fuji Excursion Limited Express Train from Shinjuku Station. It is faster, with no transfers needed to reach the stop.

Get off when the train makes a stop at Shimoyoshida Station . From there, you will have to walk for a while to reach the observation platform of the Chureito Pagoda , part of Arakura Sengen Shrine. The views up from there are incredible, with Mount Fuji in the background.

Spend a couple of hours there before you continue your journey to Oishi Park , located on the north shore of Kawaguchiko. This beautiful park features stunning views of the lake and Mount Fuji in the distance.

Discover the scenery and take pictures of the surroundings. You can enjoy your meal at Oishi Park Café while gazing at the snow-capped Mt. Fuji!

We hope that the day you visit Lake Kawaguchiko is sunny and you can see Mount Fuji clearly. You can check out these live cams to see if the mountain is visible.

If you have enough time to travel a little longer, then get off at the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum Bus Stop as you depart from Oishi Park. From there, take a short walk to reach the site of the Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival , which takes place from late October to late November every year.

This is one of the best places around Lake Kawaguchiko to take photos of the amazing view of Mt. Fuji and gorgeous autumn leaves.

If you fail to catch the last train of the Fuji Excursion, be sure to get back to Tokyo by direct highway bus . It is convenient and cheaper.

Day 3 – Visit Showa Memorial Park in Tachikawa and Akihabara in Chiyoda

Today you will enjoy a day trip from Tokyo. Explore Tachikawa’s most popular park, called Showa Memorial Park or Showa Kinen Park. It is the largest park in Tokyo!

Take the Chuo Line from JR Shinjuku Station and get off at Tachikawa Station . From there, take a walk for about 15-20 minutes to reach the park.

Many locals and foreign tourists flock to this massive park for autumn color viewing every autumn. Here, the leaves begin to change colors in late October and peak in mid-November through the last week of November .

In autumn, rows of Ginkgo trees in the park will definitely make your trip unforgettable. Roam around the park on a bike, which you can rent for a fee. Alternatively, just use your feet and see how far you can go and discover.

Note that the park was built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Showa’s reign.

If you plan on visiting Akihabara , today is the right time to do it. Whether you are a fan of anime and manga or not, a trip to Akihabara is worth your time and it will help you experience the otaku culture of Japan .

In Akihabara, you will find plenty of electronic and otaku goods sold by various stores across the neighborhood. You can also visit a maid café and enjoy food and live performances by adorable maids wearing cute dresses.

Day 4 – Enjoy a Day in Central Tokyo

There is so much to do in autumn in Tokyo. You can see beautiful autumn colors everywhere, but some places are quite extraordinary. Today you will explore some of the best sightseeing attractions in Central Tokyo , including autumn leaves spots and historical attractions.

The places you will visit are: Yasukuni Jinja, Kitanomaru Park, The Imperial Palace East Gardens, Hibiya Park, Zojoji Temple, and Tokyo World Trade Center Building.

Yasukuni Jinja is one of Tokyo’s best shrines to visit. The large torii gate of this shrine, known as Daiichi Torii will impress you a lot! This is one of the largest torii gates in Tokyo. The shrine was built in 1869 to commemorate the war veterans who fought for the Emperor of Japan.

Next to the shrine is the beautiful Kitanomaru Park . Enjoy the impressive autumn nature, history, and culture in this public park in Chiyoda Ward.

Most of the trees at Kitanomaru are ablaze with autumn colors in early December . Those who visit the Imperial Palace must pay a visit to this wonderful park and appreciate the gorgeous fall foliage.

Besides, if you want to learn about Japanese culture, then take the time to visit the Science Museum or National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo .

It takes time to see everything that the Imperial Palace offers, so to save your time, my suggestion to you is – spend an hour or more just roaming around the Imperial Palace East Gardens . Situated on Edo Castle’s ruins, this fascinating attraction features moats, entrance gates, lawns, walls, pond, and a Japanese style garden.

Have lunch at one of the restaurants located near JR Tokyo Station before heading towards Hibiya Park. Note that there are many restaurants and cafes you can find around Tokyo Station and Marunouchi .

Hibiya Park is a popular place to enjoy a walk and admire the autumn colors in Central Tokyo. When you are traveling around Chiyoda, it is worth a visit, especially in the autumn when the leaves change colors vividly. Take a peaceful stroll and experience the red maples and golden ginkgo tree! 

Continue your walk to JR Tokyo Station and hop on a train to reach Hamamatsucho Station on the JR Yamanote Line. It is a short train ride. From Hamamatsucho Station, head over to Tokyo World Trade Center Building .

The building has an observation deck, from where visitors can enjoy a bird’s eye view of Tokyo. The view of the iconic Tokyo Tower is particularly amazing from the observation deck. If you are looking for a perfect place to take pictures of Tokyo Tower, this is the place you must visit.

Day 5 – Visit Rikugien Garden, Shinjuku Gyoen, Meiji Shrine, and Harajuku

The above places can be accessed by JR Yamanote Line . So, instead of using the subways today, you should use this JR Line. If you have a JR pass, then enjoy a day with free rides on the trains along the Yamanote Line .

Rikugien Garden is your first stop on the third day of the 7 days in Tokyo itinerary. This is a beautiful Japanese landscape garden, which was built around 1500 by Japan’s fifth shogun, Tsunayoshi Tokugawa. This garden alongside Koishikawa Korakuen is often considered the most beautiful Japanese landscape gardens. 

It is home to many maple trees. If you are seeking a place to see red maple leaves in abundance, consider taking a trip to Rikugien Garden. It does provide some of the best foliage scenes every autumn in Tokyo. 

Offering spectacular views of autumn leaves, Shinjuku Gyoen is one of the best places to visit in Tokyo in autumn. After spending your time at Rikugien Garden, move to Shinjuku Station by train, and then take a walk to Shinjuku Gyoen.

This spacious park in the Shinjuku area boasts an amazing display of cherry blossoms in spring and fall foliage in autumn. You have to walk a lot in order to explore the entire park. Get ready to witness plenty of autumn’s most attractive shades as you take a stroll around and enjoy the fresh air.

Continue your today’s trip towards the famous Meiji Shrine . You have to get off at Harajuku Station from Yoyogi Station/Shinjuku Station. You must visit this sort of historical landmark in Tokyo, especially when you travel around Shinjuku.

The giant torii gates, the shrine wooden buildings, and the gates will make your trip worthwhile. Enjoy the surrounding views and take your photos.

Your next destination is Harajuku, particularly the Takeshita dori , which is known for its fashion. Harajuku is located between Shinjuku and Shibuya. This popular shopping street is a 400-meter-long narrow pathway filled with boutique stores selling trendy clothing and food outlets to try a variety of street food.

Note that Harajuku is one of the perfect places in Tokyo to buy a souvenir to take home. Spend the rest of the evening exploring this neighborhood, or if you are interested in spending your time exploring Tokyo’s nightlife, you should head to Roppongi .

Day 6 – Visit Inokashira Park and Koishikawa Korakuen

Inokashira Park is another renowned autumn leaves viewing spot in Tokyo. It is a 5-minute walk from Kichijoji Station on the JR Chuo Line .

Consider traveling to the park in the third week of November . Though if you go there in the fourth week of November, the vibrant shades of autumn foliage will still impress you a lot.

Opened in 1917, even though Inokashira Park is considered one of the top 10 sakura spots in Tokyo , the autumn leaves there are incredibly mesmerizing. Take a leisurely stroll in the park, especially around the pond, where you will find many maple trees.

Feel its pleasant nature and relaxing atmosphere, as you walk around the park and discover a shrine, known as the Benzaiten shrine . Visitors can also spend a good time by renting a paddle boat, swan boat, or rowboat on the pond.

Don’t forget to pay a visit to the Ghibli Museum , which is located in the southern area of the park. If you have enjoyed watching Hayao Miyazaki’s anime films , then you must explore this museum.

Please note that an advance ticket reservation is necessary to enter the museum.

Next up is Koishikawa Korakuen ! Similar to Rikugien Garden , this is also a famous Japanese landscape garden visited by many tourists and locals alike year-round, especially during the koyo season (late November-early December). The park is a 5-10 minute walk from Iidabashi Station.

It was built in 1692 by Tokugawa Yorifusa . Being one of the oldest and best Japanese gardens , it attracts thousands of visitors during the hanami in spring, and in autumn when they want to catch a glimpse of the brilliant foliage in late November .

Discover its beautiful stone paths, bridges, ponds, and different kinds of plants.

In the evening, you may go back to the Sensoji Temple to see its night views . The atmosphere it creates after all those shops along Nakamisedori Street get closed is quite different and relaxing with fewer crowds visiting the temple.

Day 7 – Visit Ueno Park, Ueno Toshogu Shrine, Tokyo National Museum, Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue, and Shibuya

On the final day, we suggest visiting places like Ueno Park, Tokyo National Museum, and Jingu Gaien Gingko Avenue. And if your time permits, then you may think of visiting Shibuya in the evening.

Spectacular views of cherry blossoms and autumn foliage make this city park a famous tourist attraction. This is a spacious park where you can easily avoid the crowds and find a place to enjoy the beautiful autumn scenery.

When you are in Ueno Park , there are two iconic landmarks that you must explore: the Tokyo National Museum and Ueno Toshogu Shrine . The museum is home to the world’s largest collection of Japanese arts, including roughly a hundred national treasures.

Tokyo National Museum is the oldest museum in Japan, where the first exhibition took place in 1872. So, be sure to wonder around for awhile and discover those important national treasures that the nation is proud of.

On the other hand, a walk along the stone path to Ueno Toshogu Shrine is needed a great experience. You will be impressed to see several rows of stone and copper lanterns as you walk to the main shrine building. The shrine was built in 1627 to honor Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616).

The five-story pagoda that you see as you approach the shrine is actually located inside Ueno Zoo . This is an impressive pagoda of Kanei-ji Temple, which was built in 1631 and later donated to Toshogu Shrine.

The original version of the pagoda was destroyed in a fire and rebuilt in 1639. In fact, this is the pagoda that remains today in Ueno Zoo, nearby Toshogu Shrine. It is photogenic, no doubt about that.

Visit the following places in the Afternoon and evening

The most visited destination in Tokyo in autumn from late November through early December is Jingu Gaien Gingko Avenue , part of Meiji Jingu Gaien Park. This approximately 300-meter-long avenue is home to about 146 ginkgo trees that turn a brilliant golden color!

For incredible autumn scenery in Tokyo, this spot is hard to ignore, and there you can take many wonderful photos of yourself under those golden-colored gingko trees and fallen leaves on the grounds.

It is time to complete the 7 days Tokyo tour with some shopping to take home. Let’s get to Shibuya then! It is a popular shopping district in Tokyo, and there are many things to buy, some of which could be unique to your country.

Tokyo in autumn: the best things to do and see

Maple leaves at sunset. Shinjuku Gyoen botanical garden is one of Tokyo's largest and most popular parks. Famous for autumn colour as well as cherry blossom viewing.

From seasonal sights and arts events to traditional festivals and tech expos, there is a lot happening in Tokyo from late September through to December – making the autumn months a great time to visit.

See the leaves change

Tokyo’s parks and gardens are a treat any time of year but especially when the maple trees turn from green to torii (a traditional Japanese gate) red in late November. Rikugi-en , Koshikawa Kōrakuen and Hama-rikyū Onshi-teien are some prime spots to lose yourself in a kaleidoscope of colours; Rikugi-en stays open a few hours past dark, turning on flood lights for the occasion.

You can also head to the hills to immerse yourself in the autumn phenomenon: Takao-san and Oku-Tama are two popular getaways, an hour and two hours respectively, by train from Tokyo (though fair warning, they can get very crowded).

While the maples are definitely showstoppers, don’t miss Tokyo’s signature tree – the gingko – whose leaves go gold in early December. Admire them from the terrace at Royal Garden Café on the appropriately-named Ichō Namiki-dōri (meaning, Gingko Street).

Rake in some luck

Tori-no-ichi (Rooster Fairs) have been a Tokyo tradition for centuries, held at shrines in November (the month of the rooster according to the Chinese zodiac).

Vendors sell kumade (bamboo rakes), that have been so lavishly decorated with symbols for wealth (like the god Ebisu), longevity (pine boughs and cranes) and happiness (owls) as to totally obscure their use – except metaphorically.

Hanazono-jinja in Shinjuku and Chōkoku-ji in Asakusa both celebrate Tori-no-ichi. They take place two or three times during the month, on ‘rooster days’.

Go wild for Halloween

For decades Tokyo no more than raised an eyebrow at the spectre of Halloween; but now the city champions the American import. Thousands descend on Shibuya Crossing in costume for one big open-air party – you can elect to arrive in style, in a go kart and dressed as a cartoon or video game character, courtesy of Maricar .

Other popular gathering spots include Tokyo’s gay district, Shinjuku Nichōme – start the evening at Aiiro Café – and the rowdy bars and clubs of nightlife district Roppongi .

The city of Kawasaki (in between Tokyo and Yokohama ) hosts a massively popular, other-worldly parade over the weekend closest to Halloween. For parts of September and the whole of October, Tokyo Disney Resort has Halloween-themed parades and decorations.

Have a moon-viewing party

You already know hanami (cherry blossom viewing), now meet its autumnal cousin tsukimi (moon viewing). Full moons in Japan from September to December are big and golden, just like a senbei (toasted rice cracker) hanging in the sky. The traditional day for tsukimi is the fifteenth day of the eighth month, on the old lunar calendar.

Every year, the garden Mukojima Hyakkaen stays open until 9pm for three days on and around the full moon for a lantern-lit celebration with live koto (zither) music. Yokohama garden Sankei-en hosts a similar event with music and dance staged at one of the garden’s antique pavilions.

And if you can’t make it to an event, all month you’ll see restaurants offering seasonal moon-themed treats, like tsukimi-dango (rice dumplings). Don’t despair if you’re visiting out of season though, you can get tsukimi-udon , noodles topped with a bright yellow egg yolk year-round.

Catch a show

Over the last week of October, Roppongi Hills rolls out the red carpet for the Tokyo International Film Festival , which includes a mix of Hollywood blockbusters, the latest installments from Japanese veterans and new flicks from up-and-coming directors around Asia. In November, there’s Tokyo Filmex , another film festival, but with a less commercial focus. Both are open to the public; most films are screened with English subtitles (but it’s best to double check).

Festival/Tokyo , Japan’s biggest performing arts festival, runs throughout October and into November, with shows taking place in theatres – and on streets – around the city. Some are screened with English subtitles (or don’t use spoken language at all); check the website for details.

Tokyo's autumn foods

After a summer of beer, edamame and kakigōri (shaved ice), Tokyoites look forward to more earthy delights. King among them is the prized matsutake mushroom, which can cost hundreds of dollars per kilo. Look for them on sale at Tsukiji Outer Market . Saba (pacific saury) and sanma (mackerel) are the fish of autumn; both are delicious as sushi or grilled ( yaki-zakana ) at an izakaya (Japanese gastropub) like Okajōki .

Other foods to look out for include: kuri (chestnuts), usually steamed with rice or sweetened and used in desserts; kaki (persimmon); and kabocha (Japanese pumpkin). It’s about this time of year that the yaki-imo (roasted sweet potato) trucks start making the rounds of Tokyo neighbourhoods, selling potatoes hot off the coals (that double as hand warmers).

Head to Tokyo Game Show in September, to try out the latest video games, mingle with fans or pay homage to your favourite character – TGS is known for its cosplay gatherings. CEATEC Japan takes place in early October and is Japan’s biggest electronics trade show; the place to see the latest gadgets and gizmos before they hit the shelves.

The last of the big three autumn tech expos, in either November or December (and on odd years only), is the International Robot Exhibition . This is where you can meet and greet the creations from leading international robotics enterprises – that we are likely to be seeing more of in the future.

The best travel experience of my life was visiting Japan in October. As a fall foliage fanatic, I loved seeing the country decorated in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. And when you add in pleasant weather, cheaper travel, and traditional festivals, autumn in Japan becomes the ideal time for a trip.

I’m sure cherry blossom fans are shocked to hear this bold statement! However, I’ve been to Tokyo and Kyoto for sakura season, and I still feel the fall season in Japan is superior.

I could fill an entire book about why you should travel to Japan in October! But that would be impractical, so I’ll offer you this list instead:

• Magical walks through forests of red and gold
• Hot onsen baths on crisp evenings
• Centuries-old festivals with traditional events like horseback archery
• Pumpkin-filled taiyaki
• Comfortable, relatively dry weather across the country
• Fewer crowds at tourist attractions and popular cities
• Cheaper accommodation and airfare (compared to cherry blossom season and summer)

Is it cold in Japan in October?

Japan is a multi-island nation with a very diverse climate. October in Hokkaido looks (and feels) very different from October in Okinawa.

That being said, October is the rare month where weather is pleasant across the entire country. Even in the northern parts of Japan, high temperatures hover around 16°C/60°F.

As you head south, temps continue to rise. Central Japan (around Tokyo/Kyoto) and Kyushu see highs around 22°C/71°F, while Okinawa is a warm 25°C/77°F.

However, elevation plays a big role in how cold it gets. For example, the mountain areas of Kamikochi National Park are far cooler than nearby Matsumoto city, especially when the sun goes down.

Will I see fall foliage in Japan in October?

As I mentioned above, Japan is spread across multiple climates. This means that not all areas will get autumn foliage at the same time.

Koyo (fall foliage in Japanese) starts at Hokkaido in early October, and spreads south towards central Honshu over the course of the month. Mountain areas like Nagano will get autumn colors sooner because of the cooler temperatures.

By the end of October, autumn foliage will have peaked in places like Nikko and Aomori, but will have just kicked off in Tokyo and Kyoto.

This post will cover some of the best places to see autumn leaves in Japan. But to create your ultimate momijigari (leaf-peeping) trip, you should use an updated forecast .

The current year’s weather affects when the leaves start turning, so always check the koyo forecast before planning your itinerary!

Layers are the secret to dressing for autumn weather in Japan. Even in the northern cities, the midday highs in October are often warm enough for t-shirts and pants. But temperatures drop during the mornings and evenings, making a jacket essential.

I’m a big fan of minimalist packing and carry-on only travel. I managed to fit a week’s worth of clothes into my Tortuga Setout backpack, and they worked for 20°C/70°F days in Tokyo and 7°C/45°F evenings in the Nagano mountains.

Here’s what to include in your fall Japan packing list:

• Lightweight tops
• Long-sleeved shirt
• Pants/Long skirts
• Lightweight* rain jacket (I bring my Columbia Waterproof Jacket on every trip)
• Light gloves ( convertible mittens or touchscreen-friendly gloves are ideal)
• Comfortable, closed-toed shoes (versatile white Adidas Classics are my favorite)
• 1 dressier outfit (if planning to eat at a nice restaurant)
• *Heavier jacket required if heading to Hokkaido or mountainous areas

Nestled in the mountains of central Honshu, Nagano prefecture is an ideal place to spend October in Japan. It’s a nature lover’s paradise, with waterfalls, hiking trails, and scenic viewpoints galore.

Around mid-October, fall foliage spreads through the region, and peaks towards the end of the month. While nearby Tokyo is still pretty green, cities like Karuizawa and Komoro are awash in red and gold.

Luckily, Nagano is only an 80-120 minute train ride away from Tokyo, so you can easily take a leaf-peeping day trip.

Some of the best things to do in Nagano include visiting Shirato Falls in Karuizawa , hiking the Togakushi Shrine path, and watching the famous snow monkeys of Jigokudani take an onsen bath.

Kamikochi is widely considered to be one of the country’s most beautiful national parks. The pristine mountain valley is stunning year-round, but this famous place in Japan truly comes alive in October.

From golden larches reflecting in Taisho Pond to red Japanese maple leaves drifting on the breeze, Kamikochi is a wonderland for fall foliage in Japan. And the main trails are accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, so you can enjoy this autumn jewel without fancy hiking gear.

The only tricky thing about Kamikochi is that it’s somewhat remote, and there’s a motor vehicle ban in the park. However, it’s easy to travel here by bus if you do a little research.

Japan’s northernmost main island is a land of rugged natural beauty. Volcanic mountains and dense forests surround the island’s developed cities, providing plenty of opportunities for leaf peeping.

When people ask where to go in Japan in October, Daisetsuzan National Park is often the answer. Daisetsuzan is Japan’s largest national park, and it’s famous for being the first place in the country to get autumn foliage.

Lake Towada

This vast crater lake inside Towada-Hachimantai National Park is one of the most popular autumn destinations in Japan. Boat tours ferry guests around the lake, offering amazing views of the red and gold trees that surround the shore. And there are numerous hotels and onsen resorts that make for a relaxing home base.

Nearby Oirase Stream is also renowned for its stunning autumn colors, which peak around late October.

Waterfalls, canyons, golden mountaintop shrines… If Nikko isn’t on your radar, it should be!

Nikko is best known for Toshogu Shrine, the opulent final resting place of shogunate leader Tokugawa Ieyasu. The village sits at the edge of Nikko Nationa Park, which boasts some of Japan’s best places for fall color in October. Highlights include Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and Ryuokyo Canyon.

Nikko is only 2 hours away from Tokyo by bullet train, so it’s a great autumn day trip option. Its beautiful and peaceful location also make it ideal for visitors traveling to Japan alone .

With sacred deer roaming ancient temple grounds strewn in autumn leaves, it’s no wonder Nara is a fall favorite.

Fall foliage in Nara doesn’t peak until November, but places like Mt. Wakakusa will take on color starting in late October. Even if the weather pushes back koyo , you can still enjoy the town’s amazing attractions, like Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Grand Shrine, without heavy crowds.

Unlike other Japanese cities, much of Kanazawa has been preserved since the Edo period. You can explore centuries-old neighborhoods, a ninja temple, and the iconic Kanazawa Castle against a backdrop of fiery hues. Kenroku-en Garden, with its red Japanese maples, is especially lovely in late October.

Kanazawa is on a direct shinkansen line from Tokyo, making it an easy day trip or secondary destination.

Fuji Five Lakes

Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms are synonymous with Japanese beauty. But the sacred mountain and surrounding lakes are perfectly accentuated by fall foliage.

Aside from taking in the natural splendor, the Fuji Five Lakes area is home to Fuji Q Highland amusement park, hot springs resorts, and multiple museums.

Kyoto in October is all about the festivals. Though autumn colors don’t arrive until the last few days of October, the lighter crowds and cultural events make Kyoto a great addition to a fall itinerary.

On October 22nd, the grand Jidai Matsuri festival celebrates the founding of the city. Thousands of performers dressed as geisha, samurai, and other historical figures parade through the streets towards Heian Shrine.

In nearby Arashiyama, dozens of women dressed in colorful Heian period costumes participate in the Saigu Procession (Saigū Gyōretsu). This event recreates the purification and departure ritual of a royal woman leaving to serve as a shrine priestess.

Visiting Tokyo in October is a great idea. While you won’t see much autumn foliage, the lighter crowds and Halloween festivities more than make up for it.

Halloween may be a Western holiday, but in the land of cosplay, it’s a full-blown celebration. All month, shops and restaurants decorate with displays and sell themed food and merchandise. And on the 31st, the streets of Akihabara look like an outdoor Halloween party.

For the ultimate Halloween experience, head to Tokyo Disney. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter comes alive with pumpkins, giant cobwebs, and skeleton wreaths. And experiences like the Haunted Mansion and Spooky Boo! parade transform the park into a magical must-see.

If you’re looking for more traditional October festivals, you’re in luck. There are a number of fireworks festivals, parades, and fall markets in the city and surrounding suburbs. This article has a list of what to see and when.

Anyone interested in Japanese history and culture should visit Nagoya in October. Near the middle of the month, the city puts on its largest event: the Nagoya Festival.

It’s a cultural extravaganza featuring two days of parades, traditional folk music, horseback archery competitions, and plenty of must eat Japanese food . Modern elements, like marching bands and motor vehicles, are also woven into the festivities.

Autumn color doesn’t usually arrive in Nagoya until November. However, attractions like Nagoya Castle and the Sakae entertainment district provide plenty of amusement in addition to the festival.

Kurama Fire Festival

Known as hi-matsuri , Japanese fire festivals are beloved by locals and tourists alike. On the evening of October 22nd, the hot spring village of Kurama hosts an epic, flaming processional up to Yuki Jinja.

Hundreds of villagers clad in traditional garb carry torches through the streets, and add them to the bonfire once they reach the shrine.

Nagasaki Kunchi

From October 7-9, parades and performances take over the city of Nagasaki. This popular festival has everything from sailboat-looking floats to energetic traditional dancing. Foreigners should check out this website for more information on how to watch the events, as seated tickets are difficult to buy outside of Japan.

Your best bet for enjoying this festival is to book a local guide .

Nihonmatsu Lantern Festival

On the evening of October 4th, more than 2,000 red paper lanterns drift through the streets of Nihonmatsu. Locals bob and weave as they carry the seven floats holding lanterns and drummers. It’s one of Japan’s most impressive lantern festivals, especially when the floats travel in front of Nihonmatsu Castle.

Nada Fighting Festival

If you think Japan is all about quiet rituals and pretty lanterns, think again! Every October 14-15, male residents of Hyogo prefecture put on a wild show of strength and destruction.

Day one of the Nada Fighting Festival involves a blessing and parade of decorated floats. But on the second day, groups of men in traditional clothing ram three floats together in an effort to destroy one.

All this action is set to beating drums and chanting onlookers, making it one of Japan’s more lively fall events.

From capsule hotels to fancy resorts, accommodation in Japan spans all budgets and travel styles. However, I highly suggest booking a ryokan   for your autumn trip to Japan.

Ryokans are traditional guest houses that offer an authentic Japanese cultural experience. Expect to find woven tatami mats in your room, a wooden soaker tub in the bath, and plush futon mats for sleeping.

When we stayed at Yuzuya Ryokan in Kyoto , we enjoyed perks like afternoon tea in our room and amazing kaiseki dinners overlooking a Japanese garden. It was an unforgettable experience!

Many ryokans also have onsen (hot spring baths), which feel incredible after a long day of leaf-peeping.

Ok this is AMAZING. I have to agree with you— I love Japan in the fall. We’ve been to Kyoto in November and it is absolutely magical with all the gorgeous foliage and delicious seasonal cuisine. Will have to visit these other destinations in autumn next time! Hokkaido looks incredible.

Great question, Vanessa! 10 days is a fantastic amount of time to spend in Japan. The leaf forecast changes every year depending on the weather, but you’ll definitely see some great colors in Hokkaido and mountainous areas like Nagano prefecture. I did my 5 day Nagano itinerary in late October and saw plenty of autumn foliage. Nikko, Sapporo, and Daisetsuzan National Park would be great as well.

I have a tentative plan to have a small simple wedding ceremony in Japan next fall. Do you have any recommendations on this? I was thinking a small simple gathering in Hakone or Fuji lakes but open to more ideas. Goal is to have an intimate wedding with the beautiful fall nature background and then everyone can just enjoy being in Japan. Look forward to your thoughts!

That sounds lovely, Rachel! There are a ton of hotels and resorts in the Hakone/Fuji Five Lakes area, and I’d imagine many would be able to host your guests and do a wedding dinner. A ryokan would also be a good option if you only have a very small number of guests.

If you’re hoping for a view of Mount Fuji during the ceremony, I suggest an early morning or late afternoon ceremony, as the clouds and mid-day haze can obstruct the view. As I mentioned earlier, October is the best time for outdoor activities in Japan. One of the most recommended outdoor activities in Japan is cycling at Shimanami Kaido route. 8. Takayama Festival

Takayama Festival or Takayama Matsuri (高山祭) is a traditional festival held in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. It’s counted as one of the most beautiful festivals in Japan along with Gion Festival in Kyoto and Chichibu Night Festival in Saitama Prefecture. Takayama Festival is held twice a year in spring (April) and autumn (October).

The autumn Takayama Festival is called Hachiman Matsuri which takes place at Hachiman Shrine and the old town of Takayama City and features traditional floats, decoration, procession and lanterns at night.

From October until early November, towns and cities often hold matsuri , a festival or event that celebrates some aspect of the local community or culture. It is a wonderful opportunity to explore some of the unique aspects of Japanese culture and dive deeper into the country in a way most tourists miss.

From lesser-known celebrations and events like the Saijo Sake festival and Naha Tug-of-War to huge festivals such as the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony or Halloween in Tokyo Disney, there is so much that makes October one of the most popular months to visit Japan.

Average Temperatures in October Across Japan

Japan in October is one of the best times of year for weather. There is very little rain and temperatures start to drop after the summer heat, averaging between 60 and 70 Fahrenheit during the day, and between 45 and 55 Fahrenheit at night, depending on the part of Japan you’re visiting.

The day is mostly warm enough for a shirt or blouse, but a sweater is generally recommended in the afternoons, especially the further north you go beyond Tokyo, such as Ashikaga, Nagano, and Hokkaido.

October is a great time to travel throughout Japan. There are very few public holidays, travel prices are yet to rise ahead of the Christmas period, and there is plenty to see and do, just be sure to avoid traveling the weekend before Sports Day, the second Monday in October, when the opening of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics is celebrated, and domestic can increase.

1. usj halloween horror nights.

If you happen to find yourself in the Kansai area in the weeks running up to Halloween, you must visit Universal Studios Japan for their special series of events.

The park is open as normal during the day, but as the sun sets it transforms into a real-life interactive horror experience as actors dressed as zombies roam the streets and haunted house walkthroughs pop up throughout the park. It’s a lot of fun for teens and adults but please note it may be a bit too intense for young children.

2. Autumn Dessert Buffets

The arrival of Halloween is marked by a series of amazing all-you-can-eat Halloween-themed dessert buffets around central Tokyo. Extremely popular among groups of Japanese girlfriends and couples, you must make a reservation in advance to secure entry to some of the city’s top buffets.

If you’re looking to satisfy your scary season sweet tooth, you can usually find the best buffets in some of the city’s luxury hotels. The Hilton properties, Grand Nikko Hotel, and the Westin usually go all-out in their efforts.

During this popular lantern festival, hundreds of colorful lanterns decorate Odaiba Beach. On the evenings of October 5 and 6, visitors trickle off the overground train line within minutes they will be greeted by a huge display of paper lanterns arranged in various patterns and designs across Odaiba Marine Park Beach. As the sun sets, the city and the Rainbow Bridge glow across the bay in the background creating a memorable scene that you will want to capture on camera.

Traditionally held on Marine Day in July, the event was moved this year to protect visitors from the extreme summer heat.

4. Ibaraki Kochia Festival

While Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki Prefecture is open to the public year-round, between late September and early November the park is best known for the vibrant red and golden colored pom-pom-looking plants called Kochia (summer cypress).

An excursion to Hitachi Seaside Park in October is an easy trip from central Tokyo, making it an ideal day trip. As you enter the park you will quickly spot Miharashi Hill covered in the brilliant red and gold colors of more than 30,000 Kochia.

From mid-September until late October, Showa Kinen Park is filled with millions of colorful cosmos flowers across three fields offering a delightful photo opportunity at one of the largest flower festivals in the country.

Visitors are free to wander around the park and explore the 20,000 square meters of cosmos flowers in full bloom or participate in the cosmos-picking events and workshops taking place throughout the weeks-long event. The festival can be easily reached from Nishi-Tachikawa Station which is a 2-minute walk away.

6. Tokyo Ramen Festa

The Tokyo Ramen Festa (formerly the Tokyo Ramen Show) is an annual event held in late October in Komazawa Olympic Park in southwest Tokyo. The 11-day festival is the largest outdoor ramen event in Japan with more than 28 different kinds to try across 14 food stalls.

The festival has taken place every year since 2009 to help promote local seasonal foods and culture. Although entry is free, tickets are required to purchase ramen at one of the many stalls.

The festivities at Disneyland, which occur over a 6-week period, include a special spooky parade, a haunted mansion, fireworks, and novelty food items such as spooky-looking desserts and Nightmare Before Christmas-themed hamburgers. Any fans of the Japanese TV reality show Terrace House may recognize the small town of Karuizawa as the setting for the 2018 series, where the fall foliage is in peak season in mid-October. The festival period lasts around six weeks in total, with popular leaf-viewing spots including Kumobaike Pond and Kumanokotai Shrine, or guided walking tours of the area.

9. Saitama Kawagoe Matsuri

Usually held near the end of October, this festival just outside Tokyo features elaborate two-story floats with giant dolls on top paraded through the city’s streets. The festival has taken place for more than 300 years and the highlight of the event is the “Hikkawase,” where festival floats compete through a traditional Japanese orchestra performance.

10. Nagoya Festival

Nagoya’s biggest autumn season event sees more than seven hundred participants in samurai costumes parade through the city’s streets to celebrate three local heroes who were influential during the Sengoku ‘warring provinces’ Period of the 16th century: Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Festival sites, including marching bands, festival floats, battle reenactments, samurai horseback archery, and martial arts performances, take place across the center of Nagoya City and concerts are held around Hisaya-Odori Park. The two-day event is usually held around mid-October and attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the city.

11. Kyoto Jidai Matsuri

Considered one of the top festivals in Kyoto, the Jidai Matsuri (Festival for the ages), takes place on 22nd October every year.

This event starts around midday at the Imperial Palace and features a five-hour-long procession to Heian Jingu Shrine to celebrate the history and culture of Kyoto. Participants wear costumes inspired by different periods and famous individuals from Japanese history, with many outfits made using the same techniques that were used 1,000 years ago.

12. Sawara-no-Taisai Aki Matsuri

The charming Edo-period town of Sawara holds a large autumn festival during the second weekend of October and makes for an easy day trip from Tokyo. Together with the summer festival ‘Yasaka-jinja Gionsai’, they are known collectively as the Sawara Grand Festival .

The UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage-listed festival, which has taken place for more than 300 years, sees 14 giant floats bearing four-meter-tall historical figures pass through the town whilst paper lanterns light the streets lined with food stalls. It’s a real glimpse into old Japan.

• Interesting Fact: Matsuri floats, known as dashi or sansha, were originally constructed to look like mountains, where people believed spirits resided. People often used to ride on top of the floats to welcome the gods during festivals

13. Nagasaki Kunchi Festival

Nagasaki’s famous autumn festival of Suwa Shrine began around 400 years ago.

One of the main highlights includes dance performances by one of seven groups representing the 58 different city districts, each year the groups are rotated. Dances such as the dragon dance, whale spouting dance, and kokkodesho are designated as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties by the Japanese government.

The festival lasts three days from October 7th to 9th every year. Delicious foods include hashimaki-okonomiyaki wrapped around chopsticks and mochi potato.

14. Takayama Autumn Festival

Thousands of people travel annually to the small mountain town of Takayama to see the handcrafted floats covered with colorful decorations and marionettes.

The Takayama Festival includes two festivals, Sanno Matsuri in spring, and Hachiman Matsuri in autumn. The autumn season festival is a new harvest celebration and is usually held on October 9th and 10th. The festival atmosphere comes to life after dark when hundreds of lanterns are lit on each float and the procession begins so if you can stop overnight you can enjoy it to the fullest.

• Interesting Fact: The autumn festival, which originated sometime in the 16th century, is the annual festival of the Sakurayama Hachimangu shrine, which is home to Ujigami, a guardian god that protects the residents from the northern half of Takayama city

15. Onomichi Lantern Festival

The scenic coastal town of Onomichi in Hiroshima prefecture has its own stop on the Shinkansen (bullet train) line making it an easy place to visit.

During the lantern festival in early October, approximately 30,000 lanterns are placed around the town. An overnight stay here is highly recommended to spend time the following day exploring the Shimanami Kaido, Japan’s most scenic cycling route that crosses the Inland Sea via a series of suspension bridges.

16. Nada Fighting Festival

Held annually in late October, the Nada Fighting Festival is one of the most popular events in the castle city of Himeji, which sees participants slam their portable shrines into each other to the sounds of drums and chanting in a tussle for the prize of approval from the gods!

As the festival opens the mikoshi (floats) are taken to the shrine for a special purification ceremony by a Shinto priest. On the second day, the action begins as participants dressed in ceremonial headbands and fundoshi are also blessed before fighting their mikoshi until one of them breaks.

• Interesting Fact: Only men between high school age and 45 can participate in the fighting mikoshi and are separated by the weight of their mikoshi according to their age, with the oldest men carrying the heaviest float

17. Naha Tug-of-War

The Naga Giant Tug of War event in Okinawa takes the tug-of-war games you played at school to another level!

Attracting thousands of visitors and with up to 30,000 participants, all are welcome to participate. The rope used in the event weighs 40 metric tons and is 200 meters in length, making it the world’s largest tug-of-war event. Alongside the tug-of-war, there are also other events including the traditional Eisa folk dance, festival stalls, and a parade that features lion dancing and martial arts performances.

18. Shimanami Kaido

Also called the Nishiseto Expressway, the Shimanami Kaido is a 70 km long scenic but challenging expressway across the network of bridges that span Japan’s Inland Sea, connecting Onomichi city in Hiroshima with Imabari city in Ehime prefecture.

For lovers of the Japanese countryside, a cycling route was constructed as part of the expressway with easily accessible ramps, inclines, and stops along the route. Since opening in 1999, it has become one of the most popular long-distance cycling routes in Japan due to the attractions and natural beauty of the islands. Early October is the best time of year to travel across the route due to the ideal average temperature and pleasant weather conditions.

19. Halloween Festival at Huis Ten Bosch

Things are done a little differently at Huis Ten Bosch throughout October as the entire park embraces the Halloween season with a spectacular month-long festival. Some of the special Halloween events at the park include the Haunted Halloween Palace horror walkthrough experience, the Nighttime Lantern Show projected onto the side of one of the main buildings along the canal, and the huge Halloween Night Fireworks event along with a fountain and music display.

Visitors are also encouraged to come to the park dressed in their own Halloween costumes and those who do so will be invited to join in the Halloween parade and have their photo taken in front of the spectacular backdrop.

20. Ashikaga Flower Park Illuminations

Wisteria was introduced to Japan from the United States at the end of the 19th century and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful and romantic flowers in Japan. One of the best places to view wisteria flowers in Japan is Ashikaga Flower Park where different colors and species of wisteria cover 23 acres of parkland.

In October, the ‘Light Flower Garden’ display covers the park with spectacular illuminations. Thousands of colorful blinking lights in tunnels, themed displays, and fields give the Ashikaga Flower Illuminations the title of one of the top illuminations of Japan.

21. The Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony

Now in its fifteenth year, the Grand Tea Ceremony in Tokyo is a display and a celebration of one of Japan’s most famous and cherished cultural pastimes, the tea ceremony. It is an opportunity for masters and beginners alike to enjoy and discover the history and traditions surrounding the ceremony.

The event isn’t just for locals, as foreign tourists can also watch and participate in outdoor tea gatherings in English. The event takes place over two weekends in mid to late October, at the Hama-rikyu Gardens and the Edo Tokyo Architectural Museum.

• Where & When: The 2024 Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony is due to be held at Edo Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum on October 19 and 20 and at Hama-Rikyu Gardens on October 26th and 27th

22. Saijo Sake Festival

This small town 30 minutes outside of Hiroshima city is famous for its premium sake. The annual outdoor festival takes in early October over a weekend and draws hundreds of thousands of sake lovers to sample more than 900 different types of sake.

The event opens with Osakebayashi Mikoshi, a Shinto ritual that pays gratitude to the god of sake for a safe event. It is packed with other events including live music, tours of the 10 local breweries, a water tea ceremony, a karaoke tent, parade floats, a bishunabe stand, and a meat and vegetable hot pot dish cooked in sake.

23. Ueno Tenjin Festival

Not to be confused with Ueno in Tokyo, the Ueno Tenjin autumn festival is located at Sugawara Shrine in Iga City, Mie Prefecture. The UNESCO cultural heritage-listed festival takes place across three days and features nine hand-decorated wooden floats pulled through the city by ropes.

One of the most popular elements of the festival is the procession of demons, or Oni, which can be seen nowhere else in Japan. When the celebrations move into the evening, thousands of paper lanterns beautifully light up the floats as they pass the many stalls of crafts and seasonal foods that line the streets.

24. Kanuma Autumn Festival

Almost every autumn since the 17th century, the citizens of Kanuma City in Tochigi prefecture take to the streets to give thanks to the gods for bringing rain and to celebrate overcoming the hardships of the year with a procession of Yatai, large hand-carved wooden floats.

The festival’s biggest draw by far is Buttsuke, a passionate musical performance between the floats where they attempt to outdo each other in front of the lively crowd. The performances continue into the evening beneath the light of hundreds of lanterns and onlookers.

The two-day festival also includes a citizen’s parade. Dance, theater performances, and food and drink stands throughout the parade.

• Interesting Fact: The event started in 1608 as a rain-making festival in response to a prolonged drought. When a thunderstorm occurred the following day, the citizens continued the festival for three days and nights

Sports Day – This annual national holiday is held on the 2nd Monday of October to commemorate the opening of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and promote sports. Expect domestic travel over the weekend prior to be busier than usual so it is a good idea to plan ahead as much as possible.

Walks, Galleries & Workshops for An Artful Fall

This time of year, you’ll find exhibitions that celebrate the season’s harvest, ikebana or textile works that harness fall plants and flowers, or hands-on workshops that, much like the season, inspire creative change.

Autumn signifies many things, but for the artists of Japan, it’s “geijutsu no aki” —autumn of art. Have a full-day art walk through stylish neighborhoods like Shimokitazawa and Roppongi or visit a special gallery to appreciate rice field art, autumn ikebana, mid-autumn moon sculptures and more. Here’s a look at some autumn art events inspiring an artful fall in Tokyo this year.

Moon Art Night Shimokitazwa

Giant tsuki (moon) and usagi (rabbit) sculptures, sound and light installations, handcrafted plants that glow in the moonlight and other delightful artworks will be scattered throughout Shimokitazawa. Just in time for tsukimi (moon viewing), you may take part in many activities such as “harvest moon yoga” on the rooftop, crafting moon-rabbit bamboo lanterns and tasting many tsukimi-inspired treats. Moon Art Night also encourages artistic exploration through a “Moon Viewing Stamp Rally,” where you can collect digital art stamps at participating locations and win a special Rabbit NFT.

Roppongi Art Night 2024

The theme “a festival of city, art and future” will spread throughout Roppongi Hills, The National Art Center, Mori Art Museum, Suntory Museum of Art and other spaces in the city. There will also be special performances by the Watermelon Sisters drag queens as well as MeimageDance Taiwanese dancers.

Tachikawa Pottery Market

Pottery craftsmen from Saga, the birthplace of Japanese ceramics, will gather at Tachikawa Pottery Market to share autumn-colored decorative items and tableware that pair beautifully with tasty fall dishes. An exhibition of highly regarded porcelain and lacquerware craftsmen, as well as a “Crafts Marche” between pottery artists from all over the Kanto region, will also be held. Cozy up your living space with a fall-inspired Japanese pottery piece.

Shibu Art & Walk

Begin your walk at a participating location, such as Toguri Museum of Art, Shibuya City Shoto Museum of Art, Cerulean Tower Noh Theatre, Jissen Women’s University Kosetsu Memorial Museum and other museums in Shibuya. Learn the history of Kinuta fabric as you dye or print your own handkerchief using autumnal plants and flowers harvested from the park. Afterward, lay down your own cloth blanket and enjoy a peaceful fall picnic.

Sogetsu Ikebana Exhibition

Autumnal ikebana are flower arrangements made of marigolds, pomegranates, maple leaves , oyamabokuchi (a thistle used to make soba), trifoliate orange and many other fall flowers that bloom and ripen early in autumn. The 105th Sogestsu Ikebana exhibit at Nihonbashi Takashimaya will be a grand display of autumnal ikebana masterpieces. Having gathered plants and flowers that flourish during the autumn season, masters of the Japanese flower arrangement will intuitively arrange their materials on site in a limited time frame, finding a balance between shapes, colors, textures and movement. Feel the connection between artists, ikebana masterpieces, and the beauty of the season.

Autumn, Monet and Van Gogh

It has been said that Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints inspired impressionist and post-impressionist artists of the West, including Monet and Van Goh. At Immersive Museum Tokyo, grand displays of Hokusai’s “Great Wave” will undulate side by side with Van Goh’s “Starry Night.” Other scenes, including European and Japanese landscapes, will also engulf the space. As you step into these immersive paintings, experience a special connection between East and West, past and present, and the changing seasons.

Exhibition: Autumn, Gratitude for the Harvest

Illustrations, photographs and nishiki-e (colorful woodblock prints)—of autumn rice harvesting will be on display at the “Autumn, Gratitude for the Harvest” exhibition. At Obento Gallery, you’ll see nishiki-e of rice fields, storehouses and waterwheels, as well as photographs of farmers. Detailed works give insight into the laborious cultivation process—planting rice, cutting stalks with a sickle, hanging it to dry, removing husks (threshing) and polishing brown rice into white. Images of popular rice field art using ornamental rice will also be on display. The Japanese idiom “ ryuryu shinku ,” or grain hardship, describes how each and every grain is a symbol of a farmer’s hardship. Through this exhibition, we are reminded to appreciate the bounty autumn brings.

Autumn Walk at Tenbo Park

Handmade nut wreaths, food replica charms and autumn-scented candles are some of the crafts you’ll create at Autumn Walk at Tenbo Park. Perfect for families with children, enjoy the feeling of momijigari (admiring the changing leaves) indoors with seasonal decorations, autumn-themed books, autumn-inspired food items and mid-autumn moon drinks. They will also hold a tsukimi moon and star gazing event, in which a telescopic view of the moon will be projected.

You can go to one of the grand tournaments if you happen to be in Japan at the time one of them takes place(odd months of the year), but you can also see these impressive wrestlers in action during one of their morning practices. Some sumo stables allow visitors to sit in during practice, but it is good to note that if you aren’t fluent in Japanese you can only do this on an organized tour. Right next to the famous Meiji Shrine is Yoyogi Park, which is easy to recognize by the nearby Yoyogi National Gymnasium and its interesting design. When the weather is good, buy a picnic sheet in the 100-yen store on Takeshita Dori, pick up some tasty snacks and drinks from the nearest convenience store and enjoy a nice little picnic on one of the park’s vast lawns! When you are in this beautiful garden it makes you feel as if you are in a whole different part of Japan, making for a refreshing experience.

The Meiji Jingu (Meiji Shrine) is one of the most visited shrines in all of Japan, and for good reason. Dedicated to former Emperor Meiji and his wife, this large shrine has a minimalist design and covers a huge area. It is also situated in one of Tokyo’s largest green spaces with over 100,000 trees, making it a true oasis of tranquility in the middle of the city. Many people combine a visit to Harajuku or Yoyogi park with a peaceful stroll through the grounds of Meiji Jingu.

Coming with kids, or still a kid at heart yourself? A visit to the Tokyo Disney Resort will surely delight you, and you can choose between the classic Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea, which is slightly more geared towards older kids and adults(you can buy alcoholic drinks there as well). If you can’t choose, simply go to both parks, but in that case do make sure to set aside two full days as you will easily spend a full day in either park. You are never too old to have fun at this legendary theme park.

While it may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about shopping in Tokyo, thrift shopping is gaining popularity amongst an environmentally-conscious younger crowd. There are several areas that are good for finding second-hand clothing, and trendy Shimokitazawa is one of the areas with the highest concentration of vintage clothing shops and you will be able to find just about anything you are looking for. Make it a nice afternoon out with lunch in one of the area’s many modern cafes.

While the Emperor’s residence itself is private, a large part of the grounds that belong to the Imperial Palace, is accessible to the public. Many tourists first go to the Imperial Palace Plaza with its characteristic Megane Bridge (“eyeglasses bridge”) for pictures and then take a walk around the evergreen Imperial East Gardens. This is also a great place to go running as there is a nice course around the palace. Will you be in Tokyo during the latter half of August? Then you are in luck, as you will have the chance to attend the Koenji Awa Odori Dance Festival! This bustling, colorful traditional dance event is visited by more than a million people every year, and is accompanied by lots of food stalls, drinks, and other festivities. If you make it to the festival don’t be shy and just join in on the dancing! The locals in the Koenji area are especially friendly and would love for anyone to join in on the festivities.

Not to be confused with the upscale neighborhood that shares its name, Yanaka Ginza is a traditional shopping street that takes you right back to the Showa period. People come here, especially for the food, so if you come hungry, you will leave happy! This shitamachi (old downtown) area is part of a larger neighborhood known as Yanesen which was spared during the WWII bombings in the 1940s and exudes a nostalgic and historical vibe. There are lots of great spots for photo ops as well as delicious restaurants and cafes throughout the area.

Japan’s most popular sport is baseball, surpassing even soccer in popularity. Tokyo has multiple teams, of which the Yomiuri Giants have the most impressive stadium. Plenty of tickets are available for most games, and the season runs between April and October. If you want to watch a baseball game in Japan, catching a game at Tokyo Dome is sure to be a fun experience!

Are you in Tokyo between late March to early April? Then chances are that you will be able to see the pink cherry blossoms in full bloom! Hanami , or ‘flower viewing’, is a popular activity for locals and visitors alike, and Ueno Park is one of the most famous places to do so. With a main lane lined with old cherry trees, over 1,000 cherry trees can be seen all around the park during the blossoming period, and the pavements are lined with blue sheets where picnickers sit to enjoy their food and drinks. But even if you come outside of the cherry blossom season, Ueno Park is still well worth a visit for its many historical treasures and things to do.

Japan has its fair share of traditional festivals called matsuri . In particular, between late spring and autumn, there is a good chance that you will be in Japan during one of these festivals. Some of the biggest festivals in Tokyo are the Kanda Matsuri, which falls on the weekend closest to May 15th, the Sanja Matsuri on the 3rd Sunday in May, and the Sanno Matsuri in mid-June. In addition to these three big festivals, there are loads of other smaller festivals that take place in all of the different wards and towns of the Tokyo area.

Tokyo Skytree might be taller, but when you go to the top of the Skytree you won’t see the high tower itself! So how about taking in the views from Tokyo Tower as well? Tokyo Tower is one of the most iconic structures in the city, and the design was inspired by the Eiffel Tower. From the beautifully decorated decks, you get amazing views of the city for a lower price than Tokyo Skytree, and afterward, you can stop by the impressive Zojo-ji temple nearby.

Not far from Tokyo, you will find the beautiful Mount Takao. Although it is not Fujisan, you will still have sweeping views of the area from its summit at 599 meters. If you are lucky and the weather is clear, you will also get a clear view of the famous Mount Fuji from here. The hike up isn’t too strenuous, and if you want to make it an even more relaxed experience, you can take the steep cable car so you only have to walk the last bit up. It is also a great place to see autumn leaves and cherry blossoms in both of the respective seasons.

Roppongi may be best known as a party center for expats, but there is much more to do in this centrally located neighborhood. Modern art aficionados will want to stop by for the area’s outdoor public artwork, and also for the distinguished Mori Art Museum on the 53rd floor of the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower that often has various different art exhibits throughout the year. There are also of course lots of great places to eat in the area if you want to make an afternoon out of it.

No doubt among the list of things to do in Tokyo you should add the celebrations that take place in the month of October. With the arrival of autumn, a traditional practice called momijigari, or hunting for autumn leaves, begins. Also, at the end of the month, Halloween celebrations are very popular, which despite not being a holiday originating in Japan, are very iconic.

Other celebrations are traditional in Japanese culture and are ideal if you are looking to learn about this oriental country. They include visits to Buddhist temples, food festivals and much more. Traveling to Tokyo, one of the most important urban centers in the world, is a special opportunity to learn about customs totally different from your own , especially if you go in October.

1. Enjoy momiji, the changing color of the autumn leaves

Autumn is a very popular season in Japan, especially because of the reddening of the leaves of the maple trees . This change known as momiji starts at the end of September and lasts until October. During this period, the Japanese often go on excursions and outings to enjoy the scenery. This practice is known as momijigari, which means "hunting for autumn leaves".

This tradition has its spring version when you enjoy the cherry trees, but if you go in October the maples will accompany you. Originally it was a custom of the nobility , but it became popular over time. One of the things you can do in Tokyo in autumn is to visit several places where you can appreciate the momiji in all its splendor.

You can go to Koshu Kaido Icho-namiki Street in Hachioji or Meiji Jingu Gaien Street in the Aoyama district. You can also go to Koishikawa Korakuen Park or Rikugien Park in Tokyo. Other great places to enjoy momiji are Ueno Park, Yoyogi Park and even downtown Tokyo. All are places where you can enter for free and take beautiful pictures with dreamlike landscapes, to which you can even dedicate a tour.

2. Celebrate Halloween in Tokyo

If you like Halloween you could celebrate it in a different way in Tokyo. In the Shibuya and Shinjuku neighborhoods every year on the night of October 31 there is a high concentration of people in costume. The authorities close the streets during the event to avoid accidents, but there is no major organization. If you like, you can go dressed up and take pictures with other people wearing Halloween costumes or go to a bar in the area.

If you are a fan of anime and manga , then you should attend the Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival that takes place between October 29 and 30. The entrance fee is about 10 € and you should prepare your costume at the festival site.

You can also attend the Kichijoji Halloween Festival , a family event, especially aimed at mothers and their children whose ticket costs an average of about 15 €. If you do not feel like going to a parade or festival, I recommend visiting shopping malls or stores. 3. Taste the typical autumn food in Japan

The autumn season brings not only different festivals, celebrations and weather changes, but also the typical food of this season. If you are in Tokyo you will surely find restaurants where you can try this seasonal food. Keep in mind that on average a plate of food in Tokyo can have the value of 10 € or more , although this also depends on the place you choose to eat.

Among the favorite dishes of this season is oden , ideal for lunch or dinner. It is made with a dashi broth flavored with soy . You can also have boiled egg, Japanese radish, fish cakes and cabbage or tofu rolls.

As for drinks, it is mandatory that you try the sake of the season , which in this case are Hiyaoroshi and Akiagari, distilled in winter and aged for months until the arrival of autumn in October.

Rice is always present in Japanese gastronomy and autumn is precisely when the first harvest is obtained, so you cannot miss the opportunity to eat shinmai or new rice . Other foods you should try are nashi (Asian pear), kuri (Japanese chestnuts) and yakiimo (roasted sweet potato).

4. Celebrate sports and health day

The Japanese government decreed the second Monday of October as the National Sports and Health Day or Taiiku no Hi. This is a holiday that also commemorates the 1964 Tokyo Olympics , an event that popularized many foreign sports in Japan. Judo was also introduced as an Olympic sport at those games.

All around the country, sports and a healthy lifestyle are promoted . In addition to finding events related to this celebration, keep in mind that many people take advantage of the day off to do other activities. Hotels and restaurants can easily fill up from the weekend.

On this day you can take the opportunity to practice some sport in the parks of Tokyo, especially if it is of Asian origin. Many martial arts and even baseball may be available to you on this holiday. However, it is more of a celebration to share with the family . Schools and clubs are the ones that organize activities and friendly sports competitions to which you can go without inconvenience.

5. Celebrate Oeshiki festival and visit Ikegami Honmonji temple

In mid-October, the Oeshiki festival is held, an event commemorating the anniversary of the death of the monk Nichiren Daishonin . This is an important historical and religious figure for Japan as he was the founder of Nichiren Buddhism, one of the most important cults in East Asia.

The Ikegami Honmon-ji temple in Tokyo, where the festival is held, receives around 300 thousand people during these days. One of the most outstanding activities is the Rinmetsu Doji Hoyo service, in which monks and believers gather to pray to give thanks to Nichiren.

In addition to this activity, during the procession you can see street food stalls and enjoy the cuisine they offer. There is also the manto parade, held towards the end of the festival from 6 p.m. to midnight.

The manto are commemorative objects in the shape of 5-tiered towers that are decorated with flowers and roses made of washi paper. They are illuminated from the inside and are a typical object in Japanese celebrations. During this event about 3000 people carry 100 shawls through about 2 kilometers on the streets of Tokyo. It is a beautiful image.

6. Attend Mori no Takigi Noh of Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

At Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden every year in late October or early September an event called Mori no Takigi Noh is held. It is a performance that mixes traditional Noh drama and traditional kyogen or Japanese comedy .

The area where the performance takes place is decorated with lighted torches that come to life in the late afternoon. This is the ideal environment for this artistic and traditional act that aims to raise awareness among its audience about climate change and its effects on life on planet Earth. Ticket prices range from approximately 30 € to 60 €.

This garden also offers different spaces to the public such as the formal garden, a landscape garden and a traditional garden . It is undoubtedly one of the most important gardens in the country as it offers landscapes that can not be seen elsewhere in Japan.

7. Celebrate the Tokyo Ramen Show

If you are a fan of Japanese food and even more of instant food, the Tokyo Ramen Show should be one of the celebrations to attend when you travel to Japan. This festival dedicated to ramen is held at the Komazawa Olympic Park and general admission is free.

However, if you want to try the ramen you must buy a ticket which has an average cost of 6 €. This festival has been held since 2009. It usually takes place in the last days of October and may coincide with the first days of November. It has an average duration of 2 weeks . Ramen stores from all over Japan gather here, so you can taste the best food.

As I said, it is the ideal event for you to taste Japanese food. During the event you will have the opportunity to try different types of ramen that you may have never tried before. 8. Enjoy urban arts at the Tokyo Ramen Festival

For urban art fans, October is the best month to visit Tokyo. During this month is the Tokyo Festival , a comprehensive celebration of urban arts held in the Ikebukuro area of Japan's capital. The festival is held throughout the month of October and to attend each event it is necessary to purchase a different ticket whose price can vary between 10 € and 15 €.

The aim of this celebration is to connect with the world through the rich cultural scene of Tokyo . In this city the arts and culture are very varied, in addition to having very talented artists. Attendees will see a variety of plays, dances and other artistic expressions.

9. Enjoy traditional dances at the Tokyo Yosakoi Festival

If you want to see the customs of Japan I invite you to the Tokyo Yosakoi festival. This event is held during October and is the second half of Fukuro Matsuri, the annual festival of Ikebukuro. To see it, you just have to find out which streets the dancers will pass through. These are usually streets in the Ikebukuro district, great for walking.

Yosakoi is a type of dance that has been practiced since 1954 and is a modern interpretation of another dance known as Awa odori. It is an energetic dance that combines the traditional with modern music. The dances are performed in large groups, which is why large shows such as those presented at the festival are organized.

This type of dance is so important that there is even a Yosakoi Cultural Association in charge of promoting this dance and its tradition. Do you dare to enjoy this traditional dance?

10. Bring the kids to celebrate Halloween at a parade for them

The Omotesando Hello Halloween Pumpkin Parade is an event that has been held since 1982 in which approximately 3000 children of 12 years of age or younger participate. Each of them must be in costume and accompanied by their representative.

In addition to enjoying the costumes and parades, attendees can sample the menu offered by nearby stores and cafes . All the locals decorate their facilities with the Halloween theme. Overall it is a very colorful, colorful and special event for the whole family.

Where to travel in October

​October marks the start of autumn, with a bountiful crop of destinations to whet the appetite, for food, culture and wildlife travel. Here are five of our favourites for this month.

October heralds the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness: the perfect time for trips that embrace the natural world, its changing hues and abundant produce. From mushrooms to apples, pumpkins to olives, tours across the UK and Europe are ripe with foodie opportunities, whether encountered through a harvest or on a foraging course. This is also a great time to be bagging the last beach break of the season while easy access destinations in Southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East are still basking in sunshine and coastal resorts and seasonal ferries have yet to shut up shop. But if you're weary of sun and sand, October also comes with some tempting urban escapes. From Montreal to Manhattan, Boston to Baltimore, cities along North America's east coast are at their most atmospheric this month, rich with fiery autumn colours and Halloween festivities.

1. New York, USA

Combine a city break during Halloween season with a tour upstate to explore hill country when it's vibrant with fall foliage and spooky festivals. Along with the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade which sees some 100,000 costumed revellers walk, dance and sing along Sixth Avenue from Canal Street to West 15th Street, Manhattan hosts a packed calendar of events in October including Open House New York , when sites across the city rarely open to the public throw open their doors, from rooftop gardens to design studios and historic houses. Meanwhile upstate, don't miss The   Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze , where 7,000 artfully carved pumpkins light up the riverside near Van Cortlandt Manor in the Hudson Valley.

Sustainable travel tip:   Skip the road trip in favour of a two-wheel tour. Making its debut last year, the Empire State Trail offers 750 miles of greenways, repurposed railway lines and bike paths that can, if you have the legs for it, take you from Manhattan to the Canadian border. We suggest the Hudson Valley Greenway section taking riders through the historic towns and waterfront villages along Hudson River, where general stores are replete with pumpkins and the tree-carpeted Catskill Mountains burn fiery orange to the north.

2. New Forest, UK

October is a fun month for fungi foraging, and it's also a great time to harvest walnuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts and damsons. The New Forest is a top autumn break spot; the UK's smallest national park packs in a hugely diverse range of landscapes, from marshy coast and heathland to its an ancient woodland populated by free-roaming ponies. For fungi alone, it's one of the most important sites in Britain, with over 2,700 different species calling the forest home. In autumn, the woodland is also home to hundreds of rootling pigs who are allowed free-range to clear the ground of acorns, beech mast and chestnuts that are harmful to livestock in a practice that dates back to the forest's founder, William the Conqueror.

Sustainable travel tip: Foraging is best done under expert guidance, to ensure nature's larder is raided sustainably and safely. The New Forest National Park has a 'no pick' policy for mushrooms in Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Permission is given for walks and educational tours with licenced fungi foray groups. Wild Food UK offers a wide range of foraging courses, from days out, to camping and wild food weekends and trips away to hotels with gourmet chefs. While Go Foraging offers guided walks in Hampshire, the West Country and Wales.

3. Normandy, France

It's peak apple harvest season, so why not make a celebration of it with a tour of Normandy's venerable cider houses , calvados cellars and Pommeau purveyors (calvados-fortified cider). Around 800 varieties of apple grow in this region of Northern France, where the fruit-based booze has been made since the 12th century. An easy itinerary follows the dedicated 25-mile-long   Cider Route , where you can visit 16 producers of apple libations set against a backdrop of Norman cathedrals, ancient villages with half-timbered houses and some sobering Second World War coastal sites. And as this is France's dairy-producing heartland, you can expect lots of indulgently creamy dishes to fortify you en route, with a special shout out to local legends: camembert, Pont l’Eveque, Neufchatel and Livro. Sustainable travel tip: Why not pop your bike on the ferry, and explore Normandy under pedal power ? Normandy has four ports served by ferries from the UK with most operators including a bike in your luggage allowance. Or book with a tour company offering specialist cider route bike trips, such as Utracks or Cycling for Softies . Though you can reach Normandy by Eurostar via Gare St Lazare, it's got trickier to carry bikes across the Channel by train since the pandemic.

4. Churchill, Canada

Between late September and November, the shores of Hudson Bay are populated with polar bears, padding about the beaches waiting for the winter sea ice to form. And once it does, away they go, in search of the ringed seals and their pups. But until then, the 'polar bear capital of the world' sees these magnificent beasts amass in the hundreds, with the town of Churchill the most accessible place for close-proximity viewing. Wilderness trips to the Torngat Mountains on Canada’s remote Labrador Peninsula or aboard an expedition ship into the waters of the Northwest Passage offer adventure tourists the chance of sightings, but a flight from the UK via Winnipeg to Churchill puts travellers in place where sightings all but guaranteed right from the tundra town. Having long coexisted with the world’s largest land carnivore, Churchill offers a unique frontier Canada experience, with lots of choice for tours to track bears off-road in the wild.

Sustainable travel tip: Churchill Wild offers on-foot, low-impact tours from its three ecologically sensitive lodges along the shores of Hudson Bay. Frontiers North Adventures , a long-established, family-owned company specialises in sustainably minded tourism in Churchill and across Canada's north.

If there’s ever a season for travel to Japan, autumn is arguably prime time. Rivalling spring's cherry blossom season, October is when parks, gardens and mountains across the central islands and Alps are ablaze with colourful trees. This is a time for momijigari ('red leaf hunting') tours, with train rides in and around Kyoto a popular way to take in rural landscapes.

Sustainable travel tip: Walk Japan specialises in on-foot exploration across some of Japan's most beautiful rural and cultural destinations. Its low-impact tours, guided and self-guided, go off-the-beaten-track, often from village to village, staying in local guesthouses. These include tours that visit its community project in Kunisaki Peninsula   in Kyushu.

Sustainable infrastructure: The best ideas from the 2022 GII Summit

The pathway to sustainable infrastructure is neither straight nor short. But its successful navigation to reach net-zero emissions is the unrivaled business challenge of a generation of leaders.

Since 2012, the Global Infrastructure Initiative Summit has convened many of the world’s most senior leaders to connect and collaborate in pursuit of smart, resilient, and future-ready infrastructure. The eighth GII Summit took place in Tokyo, October 19–21, 2022, and focused on creating the pathway to sustainable infrastructure.

And indeed, the top of the CEO agenda is now unavoidably—and rightfully—dominated by sustainability. Meaningful strides in decarbonization, the energy transition, social equity, resilience, digital transformation, and talent acquisition will require bold commitments, matched by action and collaboration across the value chain.

Decarbonization and the energy transition

• Drive energy outcomes at an ecosystem level: combine carrots (incentives), sticks (regulation, taxes, carbon pricing) and tambourines (praising and supporting successes) to move the needle
• Break ground now—the next 5–10 years are crucial, and going from brown to green is just as important as developing green infrastructure
• Embed carbon and resilience into the time, quality, and cost equation
• Establish a capital stack across the public and private sector, trading reduced risk for the private sector up front for outsized government returns later in the life cycle

Digital and analytics transformation

• Radically reduce waste, then digitize processes via people-first design
• Understand cybersecurity as a cost of doing business
• Establish collaboration incentives—adopt common data standards, foster transparency, co-invest in tech
• Protect the digital economy (and its expected growth) through physical asset investment—bring together tech, power generation, and fiber to drive upgrades and expansion

Leadership and workforce development

• Reimagine the value proposition for the industry—promoting purpose, addressing hybrid vs onsite challenges head-on, and strengthening the role of apprenticeship
• Access a more diverse talent base through nontraditional talent, sharing a version of the future earlier, and ensuring underrepresented populations can see themselves in leadership
• Radically transform how work is done to increase quality and productivity—doing more, in different ways, with different capabilities

Project development and delivery

• Put the team first: Collaboration, not contracts, delivers successful projects
• Get serious on moving capital project delivery methodologies into the manufacturing age
• Standardize the standardization process—international standards and shared operational best practices
• Create responsibilities for project outcomes, not individual slices of the value chain
• Courage: state and live by the ambition to deliver every project at technical limit cost and speed
