A number of tourism businesses in Cornwall came away as winners from the 2022/23 South West Tourism Excellence Awards last night (Thursday, March 23) with a waterside restaurant being named the best restaurant in the region and a Cornish holiday park and glamping site gaining gold too.

More than 90 awards were handed out at the annual event as nearly 300 winners, supporters and tourism leaders celebrated at the Eden Project for the first time in ten years.

Over 480 entries were submitted from across the region including Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Bath, Bristol, Somerset, Dorset and Devon with many winning in county awards in Cornwall, Bristol, Bath and Somerset, Dorset and Devon before being selected for the regional ceremony.

The Idle Rocks at St Mawes won the Restaurant of the Year gold award. A spokesperson for the hotel said: "This is another brilliant accolade for the hotel and award-winning restaurant led by head chef Dorian Janmaat as it steps into spring. The award is a true testament to the culinary team at the hotel and their efforts in constantly going above and beyond to ensure that every guest leaves with an unforgettable experience."

Hendra Holiday Park in Newquay won the Holiday Park of the Year category while PK Porthcurno took gold in the Small Visitor Attraction of the Year section, and Rebecca Hedges, of Bodmin Jail , was one of the Unsung Hero winners. Visit Newquay Tourist Information Centre won Visitor Information Service of the Year. A glamping business near Looe , Lydcott Glamping, also took gold, as it did in the Cornwall Tourism Awards.

The awards are the culmination of 11 months of evidence gathering, online entry, judging and county awards. In what has been another difficult year for many in the industry they are recognised for their rigour and independence of judging with many winners progressing on to the national VisitEngland awards, in which the South West has been the top performing region for over five years.

All forms of hospitality business were amongst the winners, with cafes, pubs, watersports schools and falconries all celebrating alongside attractions, camping and glamping sites, holiday parks, B&Bs, cottages and hotels.

SW Tourism Awards shortlist

Cornish businesses feature prominently among the 90 finalists for this year’s South West Tourism Excellence Awards.

Tourism businesses from across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Bath, Bristol, Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall have been shortlisted for the regional final, which will be held at the Eden Project on March 23.

Among the local hopefuls are Hendra Holiday Park (Holiday Park of the Year), Budock Vean Hotel (Large Hotel of the Year) and PK Porthcurno (Small Visitor Attraction of the Year).

The news follows an awards process which started in April 2022, with 482 entries submitted, a rigorous judging process and many winning in their county schemes in Cornwall, Bristol, Bath and Somerset, Dorset and Devon.

The awards, which themselves won a further national accolade in 2022, achieving the ‘Outstanding’ accolade in the Awards Trust Mark scheme, are the culmination of ten months of evidence gathering, online entry, judging and county awards.

They are recognised for their rigour and quality of judging with independent judges spending months poring over entry submissions, websites, social media and review sites, as well as carrying out business visits, many of them mystery visits. Reports and recommendations were then submitted to an independent panel who made the final decisions.

Businesses and sponsors are looking forward to a return to Eden Project, ten years after the awards were last held there.

Up to four finalists have been announced in each category, but all will have to wait until March 23 to learn whether they have won Gold, Silver or Bronze trophies.  Many will also be nominated to represent the south west in the national VisitEngland awards later in the year.

Chair of judges, Dr Natalie Semley, lecturer in sustainable tourism management at Cornwall Business School, commented: “The level of excellence being sustained throughout the south west region was truly inspirational, and represents the extraordinary level of dedication and commitment from each and every business shortlisted.

It is clear that these finalists have taken responsibility, and have actively embedded resilience and sustainability into their organisations.”

Robin Barker, Director of Services for Tourism Ltd, who manage the Awards, added: “I am so looking forward to celebrating with the region’s best. To continue innovating, being ever more sustainable, and delighting customers at the same time as overcoming so much adversity is a real testament to their passion and commitment. Many congratulations to them all.”

Eighteen Dorset finalists are through to this year's South West Tourism Excellence Awards

The Eden Project which will host this year's South West Tourism Excellence Awards.

Dorset has no fewer than 18 finalists through to the 2022/23 South West Tourism Excellence Awards.

They range from museums and art centres to cafés, hotels and holiday parks.

In total 90 tourism businesses from Dorset, Cornwall, Bristol, Bath and Somerset and Devon have been named as finalists.

The awards ceremony takes place at the Eden Project in Cornwall on March 23.

The process started in April last year with 482 entries submitted, a rigorous judging process and many winning in their county schemes including the Dorset Tourism Awards last month.

South West’s top attractions win Gold

LONGLEAT HAS WON the Gold Award in the large visitor attraction category in the South West Tourism Awards. Silver went to The Big Sheep attraction, and other winners included Cothele, The Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan.

LONGLEAT HAS WON the Gold Award in the large visitor attraction category in the South West Tourism Awards. Silver went to The Big Sheep attraction, and other winners included Cothele, The Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan.  

The Eden Project  was the venue for this prestigious annual awards event, held on Saturday, 8 February. Given that the South West coast has been battered by the severest winter storms for centuries just recently, the awards gave a vital boost to tourism in the region.

More awards went to the most exciting small tourist attractions, festivals and events and a selection of excellent campsites and holiday parks. Here’s our round-up of the top winners. 

Large Visitor Attraction of the Year

The Gold Award went to  Longleat , Warminster, Wiltshire.  The Silver Award went to  The Big Sheep , Bideford, Devon. Bronze went to 

Cotehele , Saltash, Cornwall, and also to  Trebah Garden , Mawnan Smith, Cornwall. Highly Commended Awards went to:  The  Eden Project , Bodelva, Cornwall.  The Lost Gardens of Heligan , Pentewan, Cornwall,   RHS Garden Rosemoor , Great Torrington, Devon and  

Pennywell Farm , Buckfastleigh, Devon.   

Small Visitor Attraction of the Year

The Gold Award went to  National Trust Coleridge Cottage , Nether Stowey, Somerset.  The Silver Award went to  Geevor Tin Mine , Pendeen, Cornwall.  Bronze Awards went to:  St Austell Brewery Visitor Centre , St Austell, Cornwall,  Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life,   Tiverton, Devon,  The  National Trust Trerice , Kestle Mill, Cornwall and  Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary , Looe, Cornwall.  

South West Holiday Park of the Year

The Gold Award went to  Highlands End Holiday Park , Bridport, Dorset. 

The Silver Award went to  Wooda Farm Holiday Park , Poughill, Bude, Cornwall.  Bronze Awards went to  Cofton Country Holidays , Dawlish, Devon and also to  Gwel an Mor Resort , Portreath, Cornwall.  Highly commented awards went to four holiday parks:  Finlake Holiday Park , Chudleigh, Devon,  The Park Mawgan Porth , Mawgan Porth, Cornwall.  South Lytchett Manor Caravan and Camping Par k, Lytchett Minster, Dorset and  Perran Sands Holiday Park , Perranporth, Cornwall. 

South West Events of the Year

The Gold Award for Events of the Year in the South West went to the  Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival , Salisbury, Wiltshire.  Silver Awards went to two events:  Dorset Seafood Festival , Weymouth, Dorset   and  the  Falmouth Oyster Festival , Falmouth, Cornwall.  Bronze was won by  RNAS Yeovilton International Air Day , Yeovilton, Somerset.  Finally the Highly Commended Awards went to:  Exeter Festival of South West Food & Drink , Exeter, Devon and  Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach , Watergate Bay, Cornwall. 

Taste of The South West Award 

Delicious regional food is a highlight of any motorhome holiday, so we know you’ll appreciate the winners in this category. Joint Gold Awards went to  Bybrook Restaurant at the  Manor House, Castle Combe , Wilts 

River Cottage Canteen & Deli , Plymouth, Devon. Joint Silver Awards went to:  Eastbury Hotel, Sherborne , Dorset and  The Herring , Mawgan Porth, Cornwall. Highly Commended Awards went to:  Juliet’s Garden Restaurant & Bar , St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly,   Northcote Manor Country House Hotel , Umberleigh, Devon,  Porthminster Beach Cafe , St Ives, Cornwall and the  Tudor Farmhouse Hotel & Restaurant,  Clearwell, Gloucestershire. 

Tourism Pub of the Year

Pubs are also key attractions in Britain and the pub that won Gold in the South West Tourism Awards was  the  Pandora Inn , Mylor, Cornwall. Two Silver Awards went to  The Cornish Arms , St Merryn, Cornwall  and the  Start Bay Inn , Torcross, Devon. Bronze went to  The New Inn , Tresco, Isles of Scilly. Finally, Highly Commended Awards went to  The Inn at Cranborne , Cranborne, Dorset,  The Jack in the Green , Rockbeare, Devon and  The Lamb Inn , Sandford, Devon
