Airfare refund delay

My airfare booked with STA Australia due to covid-19 has not been paid after 82 days even though I am eligible for a refund after 60 days. They keep telling me the same excuses “backlog” whenever I asked them about my refund.

The knowledge of the staff at STA makes …

The knowledge of the staff at STA makes them really useful when booking your trip. The flight prices are very competitive, especially if booking a round-the-world trip, but don't bother with their add-ons. The reason for 4 and not 5 stars is that some of their staff (they obviously get incentives for extra sales) are a little too pushy trying to sell packages that are much cheaper to organize when they get there...unless that's your thing.

STA complaints dealing is shocking!

Has anyone here have their complaint resolve with STA travel? The complaint resolution with this company is absolutely disgusting! They're trying to wriggle they way out of the complaint to try and avoid liability. If you guys have any similar complaints or complaints that remain outstanding, let me know. Let's try and band together and expose this company for what it is! Contact me on Facebook - Marie Shakespeare. If we try and deal with this as a group they might finally try and resolve our complaints. Or better yet take to Dailymail.

Rude and ineffective

Wrong dates, luggage not included twice, no rude or late response to emails. Now been four months if complaints and still not had an apology or a refund for the additional luggage charges. Would advise against using them.

Superb STA Covent Garden agent Catryn Scantlebur

I had the pleasure of working recently with STA Covent Garden agent Catryn Scantlebur for a holiday booking to Greece. Cat was SUPERB. She stayed on the phone with me for nearly an hour initially identifying flights and hotels in Athens and Santorini that would suit my schedule and budget. She also spent additional time looking up alternative hotel options until we settled on the most appropriate arrangements for me. Cat was incredibly personable and conscientious, going beyond what I believe is the extra mile. I will definitely be using her services again in the future.

Don't get and STA travel card

Ordered an STA travel card. I'am pretty sure that the card has been cloned and we've been robbed of over £150. When contacting the "customer service team" I get painfully slow responses and have so far been unable to get any useful information. Great you can cancel the card and investigate. What help is that while I am still in Vietnam. Absolutely dreadful and disgustingly slow response. Since getting the card we have been unable to top it up, I had to call one of the stores in the UK so that we could have money on it as the website wasn't working, which was a fun unexpected cost and we have had the transaction list not work too which delayed us realising that we had money stolen by half a day.

Great service!

I booked a 5 week trip through STA and they were fantastic. Emma from the Newcastle branch dealt with my booking and organised everything including flights, tours, accommodation and insurance which made the whole experience very easy and enjoyable. The staff have a real passion for travel and are extremely knowledgeable so can tailor everything to your individual needs. I’d highly recommend and will definitely use again in the future.

DO NOT USE STA

We were mis sold an upgrade for a trip we booked with them, when speaking to them regarding the complaint they kept ignoring the main point we were trying to complain about and making it seem like our fault. Once they have taken your money they literally do not care and do not respond to your emails or phone calls. Had an email from my agent saying she would call in 15 mins when she had figured out how much our upgrade would be as she was just converting it into £! 3 weeks later I got an email after sending her email after email after email. STA travel card was also a joke didn’t work, wouldn’t let me load money onto it wasn’t showing my transactions. Emailed my agent surprise surprise NO reply so had to call the travel card people from America which cost me a lot just to try and sort it out, which after 5 days was working again. AVOID USING STA!

Terrible support when things go wrong

Can't help when anything wrong happens with your flight. Made our whole situation worse and even stopped the airline from helping us. Then took no responsibility. AVOID.

"No stress " visa

Going to Australia in a few weeks time . Purchased the "no stress" visa package . No stress ? Should be done for CPR . The visa passed off fine which was good but the set up of a bank account , atrocious . They booked me in for two different appointments and missed them both . I've had to call up to try get this sorted and the guy from Aberdeen had no idea and transferred me to the Cambridge branch which I have no affiliation with as I booked in online . I've called up the online team today after receiving the correct number . He said leave it with me I'll get back to you , this was at 9am and i haven't received anything . Do not buy the no stress visa package unless you want to pay about 80 quid more than just doing it yourself and probably saving you the trouble of going with this one . Please remove the no stress from the slogan .

I have had the worst possible service …

I have had the worst possible service from STA. I had booked onto a tour in India, I had several confirmation emails from them, and a reminder of the tour 10 Days before I was due to travel. the day before I was due on the tour I called to check some details and was told by the tour company, not STA, that my place had been cancelled off the tour. I asked STA what was going on and to try and fix it, the day I arrived in India they apologised, recognised they had made a mistake but said they couldn’t get me on a the tour as it was now full, I was left with no accommodation as a single woman travelling on my own arriving in Delhi with nowhere to stay that night and all they did was offer me a refund which would take 14 days to go through. They ruined what was meant to be an amazing trip to India and offered no help whatsoever.

Terrible service and no after sales…

Terrible service and no after sales service! Booked and paid for a package at one rate, friends booked and paid for the same package after us and got a cheaper rate. When asked why, the agent said nothing can be done. Then booked and paid for a hotel in Argentina, facilities were fine, then got moved due to renovations which we get, but then got moved a third time because STA had overbooked the hotel as per the branch manager? When asked why can we not be moved to a hotel with the same facilities as we initially sign and paid for we were informed that we would be liable for costs? Friends who booked after us have been fortunate enough to stay at this hotel while we were moved out. Then also to be told by the BM that we can ‘just walk 350m’ to the sister hotel if we want to use this facility??? How is this normal to share with your clients??? All I received today was an email to say sorry we cannot accommodate you at your requested hotel... Unacceptable follow ups and service which is very poor to say the least! We fly next week and this is extremely unsettling!

STA Travel keeps a promise, even when it costs them money

Just had a very positive experience with James at STA Travel.com (the American website--seems to be different staff for different countries?). I had spent an hour or so going through various flight aggregator / search engines to find good prices / times on a fairly complicated trip, and STA had the best prices. I put a flight in my basket, entered my payment info, clicked pay and ... received a confirmation screen showing a price $500 than the price that had been shown in my basket. Suspecting that I had just entered into what was going to be a budget airfare nightmare, I said a few (many) pretty choice words, screenshotted everything, and fired off a blistering email to STA telling them there's no way I was paying this. James from STA got back to me and told me that the fare-class I was buying expired literally as my transaction was processing (midnight 30 days before departure), meaning that STA was on the hook for the $1400 ticket, and their computer system didn't have any record of the previous price, only the final sum. I sort of grudgingly accepted that this kind of thing happens when you try to book cheap tickets, and was going to just initiate a chargeback, write a pissy review and let Visa deal with it. However, James got back to me and told me that he had gone to bat for me with a higher-up, and that STA would eat the $500 difference, charging me $900 for a flight that would now cost them $1400. This was, to my mind, a pretty phenomenal bit of customer service--a company willing to lose a not insignificant sum of money to keep a promise to a customer--and I thought it was worth writing it up so that others would know about it. Thanks, James.

Our Editor’s Review

STA Travel’s International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is awesome! Are you a parent?  Even if you are not under 26 & a full-time student or teacher, it is worth the money to buy one for your kids.  Kids can get one after they turn 12.  That way they you can save cash every time you shop for them or go to restaurants with them.  Kids are expensive, and we think this is a great way to save with discounts at Macy’s, the Apple Store and more.  ISIC cards are only $22* for a full year!   Go, get one here .   We also love STA Travel’s student deals for spring break. Their prices are hard to beat.

STA Travel Fees

The STA Travel Guarantee: If you find a cheaper student flight, they will match it PLUS give you an ISIC Discount card good for 1 year. You must be a full-time student and under the age of 26 to qualify for student discounts and the ISIC discount card. $50+ Fee to Change or Re-issue airline tickets.  $100+ Cancellation fee for airline tickets.

STA Travel Reviews

The ISIC cards that STA Travel issues can get you good deals, but they literally could not do a single thing for me without making a mistake. It ended up taking me MONTHS to get my ISIC student ID card and I ended up having to pay twice as much money to get it because they kept messing up. STA Travel was very slow at responding to me when I tried to contact them with my concerns, and when I brought it up with them, they offered a refund but then never gave it to me even after I emailed them twice and they said they would! I would agree with the comment above mine that said that STA Travel seems to take advantage of inexperienced students, which is not a very smart move considering students account for nearly their entire customer base. Like I said, the ISIC student ID card can get you some great deals abroad, but be prepared to get ripped off by STA in the process!

I wrote a lengthy report of what my boyfriend and I experienced when he purchased a ticket to Poland through STA Travel: http://bit.ly/statravelfail

In a nutshell, we contacted STA Travel to find out what we could do once the ticket was canceled and we were given a different answer every single time we called. We were also promised a full refund TWICE. They made numerous customer service mistakes in handling our situation and we ended up losing $1200. I would absolutely recommend booking flights directly through the airlines. STA Travel does nothing to help you out as a customer.

I felt that STA travel went out of their way to help me get a ticket for the right price. I found them friendly and symathetic to my situation and genuinly concerned if I had a problem.

STA is misleading and takes advantage of inexperienced student travelers. Initially, I had a good experience booking my Fulbright ticket to Tirana through STA. They understood Fly America requirements for US-sponsored aid programs and found me a flight that departed from Washington, D.C., as I had requested.

I realized when I was booking my flight that my travel plans might change. Makayla, the agent who booked my flight, informed me that changes to my ticket, if made prior to 30 days before the flight date, would be $50 plus the difference in fare. Sounds great, right? Flexibility for the student life style.

What Makayla did not mention is that the phrase “changes to your ticket” only applies to changes in date- not to changes in city of departure. Today, I tried to change the city of departure on my ticket from Washington, D.C. To Chicago. This was not permitted by United, the US carrier that STA had booked the ticket under; I was later told by customer service rep Ken and manager Megan that “It’s actually not really allowed to do rerouting at all anymore.”

In order to make the change that I had requested, my ticket would need to be refunded and then rebooked with a charge of $400. I asked if STA would consider waiving the $400 refunding fee, since I felt that I had been misled when I booked the ticket. Megan refused.

In conclusion, your STA ticket is not as flexible as your STA agent may make it seem. You ought to be cautious about the terms and conditions when booking through an agent, online or on the phone, if the flexibility of the ticket is what’s holding the appeal for you.

Sta Travel Review: Gap Year Round the World Flights & Travel Insurance

By: Author Amar Hussain

Posted on Last updated: October 6, 2018

I have to say that I’ve used STA Travel for a number of years, for various bookings and for different trips. Let me do you a review of STA Travel and tell you about my experiences.

Sta-travel-logo

Quick Links

Sta Travel Round the World Flights

Sta travel gap year travel insurance, sta travel accommodation, sta travel review conclusion.

Before planning any trip that involves multiple countries I will ALWAYS pop into STA Travel first to check on my round the world route . You sit down with a consultant and they have those handy globes built in to the desks to explain what it is you’re trying to do. If you’re anything like me, you’ll have some wildly ambitious travel plan that flight wise, will just never work. Usually, the person you’re speaking to, or the guy at the next desk, has travelled to the part of the world you want to go to and can advise on what’s possible and how to make the most of your trip.

Also, their student and under 26 fares are unreal! I’ll give you an example. I wanted to fly from London to Vancouver via the USA. The flights at STA Travel came up at £570. The same flight, at the same time, with the same airline was coming up at £800 and £1200 at other places I checked. Even the other travel agents were perplexed as to how low the fare was!

I have to say that I have used STA Travel Insurance on numerous occasions, not only for my Gap Year but also their multi-trip travel insurance.  They have three levels of cover; Budget, Standard and Premier. They also cover three geographical areas; Europe, Worldwide and Worldwide excluding North America. Insurance can be from 4 days to 24 months. You can also extend your policy while you’re away should your travel plans change (trust me, they will change in some way or another, go with it).

I’m constantly pushing the point that gap year travel insurance is important. I had an accident while I was away a few years ago and trust me, you don’t want to get left with the medical bills. The other point I want to make is that you get what you pay for with travel insurance. There is no “good deal”. A lot of travel insurances are generally “equal” but where they differ a lot is with what activities are covered. This is why I am such a huge fan of the Premier level of cover from STA. The activities list is extensive. I do a lot of stuff and I am yet to tick all the activities off. Please guys, don’t skimp on insurance. It might seem like an added expense but get yourself the best level of cover with everything included. When you’re travelling you’re going to be trying lots of activities that you’d never do at home. Get Travel Insurance!

I’ve used STA Travel to book accommodation for places that I am unsure of or where internet research didn’t pull anything up. For example, I wanted to do Spring Break in Cancun but couldn’t really decipher where the action was or where the best located hotels were. Trying to find this information and book online myself was a nightmare as all the websites are built for Americans who want to book package Spring Break trips. STA Travel found us a decent hotel at a price within our budget (I actually expected to pay more so was surprised with the deal we got).

In conclusion, for anyone planning a Gap Year and doesn’t know where to start this is it. I’ve had the same level of quality service from calling as I have in the three branches I have used over the years; Corporation Street – Birmingham, Clapham – London and Islington – London. Knowledgeable travel consultants and competitive prices makes STA Travel a no brainer.

Amar Hussain

Amar was born and raised in England and embarked on an 11-country round-the-world gap year after graduation and then became well and truly hooked. The first gap year inspired a second, which ended up being a 23-country down-the-world trip from Canada to Antarctica. Since then, Amar has spent the last 14 years traveling the 7 continents.

Gap Year: Reloaded – Lessons From My First Gap Year For My Second

Sta travel reviews ( %countitem ).

2020-Feb-15, my son booked his flight through STA for his Study Abroad Experience departing 2020-Mar-6. In his itinerary and booking confirmation (***), the rules repeatedly stated: “Ticket is refundable minus a $400 penalty prior to departure”. Students were notified 2020-Feb-28 at 5:54 p.m. that the trip was cancelled. Several conversations followed including: 2020-Feb-29 at 1:28 p.m., Manager Shelby B emailed, “Just to confirm, Hayden’s ticket is refundable prior to departure minus a $400 penalty.” and at 8:11 p.m. on 2020-Mar-2 she wrote, “There have been no updates from the airline in regards to the waiver for cancelation penalties. I can confirm the ticket is refundable minus the $400 penalty prior to the originally schedule [sic] departure date.” 2020-Mar-03 at 11:56 a.m. Petra emailed, “In case of cancellation, you will receive a refund or [sic] around $1400 USD. If you wish to proceed further with the cancellation, please confirm the last 4 digits and expiry date of your card.” 2020-Mar-4 at 4:09 p.m. Booking Agent Doug M said, “We would have to cancel it with the $400 cancellation penalty. We can wait another day if you would like.” And the next day at 8:33 p.m., “Just reply back to me when you want me to cancel the space. I will be in till [sic] close tomorrow so we can give it as much time as possible. Just make sure to let me know by 9 p.m. Eastern. If you would like me to take care of it right away with the $400 fee, I can do so right away.” At 8:15 p.m., Mr. M wrote, “Unfortunately, the flights are still operating, and a waiver has not been issued. I am going have the ticket refunded for you with the $400 cancellation penalty.” We received an updated Booking Confirmation that stated the refund would be $1,529.37. On 2020-Mar-20, Mr. H called and Lynn informed him that STA had changed their refund policy and were no longer going to honor the contract and refund the money they had repeatedly promised.

I've contacted STA regarding my refund for booking number *** on 3/13/20. Due to the COVID pandemic, my flights were csncelled. I spoke to Betti and Rucsandra and was guaranteed a full refund to my card. They stated that the refund might take up to 20 days to actually go back to my card. So I contacted STA on 4/6 to followup on this matter and was told that their policy changed and cannot refund my ticket? Why would you tell me that the refund was processed at the first place via 2 separate emails? Even if your policy changed, someone should've notify me of this change. This is just ridiculous.

Dear STA Travel Management, I am writing to you to request a FULL CASH REFUND for the cancellation of Lufthansa Airlines flight ***. My daughter *** was booked on flight *** from Marseille, France to Frankfurt , Germany and flight *** from Frankfurt, Germany to Detroit, Michigan. This flight was cancelled by Lufthansa on March 12, 2020 (see attached) with no re-booking. Per communication with Lufthansa and a order by the US Department of Transportation; all airlines MUST "fully refund airfare to passengers whose flight have been canceled during the outbreak of Covid-19, the US DOT ordered on Friday, April 3, 2020. I have contacted your agency on three different occasions and was informed that STA Travel will 'NOT be giving cash/credit card/debit card refunds', only vouchers. This is unacceptable...per DOT and Lufthansa...my daughter (***) is due a FULL return flight refund (which is 40 to 50 percent of cost of ticket). Also, I am requesting that the $300.00 charge to change ticket be refunded as well due to Lufthansa cancelling all re-booking fees during the COVID-19 crisis. Your agency has been horrific in the way it has treated me during these difficult times and I would never do business with you in the future. Your agents has been very rude and unaccommodating when speaking with them by phone, after waiting for hours on hold. Your unethical business practices are not going unnoticed and I believe that you should not be allowed to treat your customers in this manner. Lastly, I am requesting a additional refund for the cost of the American Airlines flight (see attached) that I had to book due to your agency staff member Drew falsely stating on 3/13/2020 that he would contact me back with a resolution to re-booking my daughter a flight home per the original cancellation of flight ***, after waiting on hold for more than four (4) hours. With a humble and understanding deposition, I thank you for your prompt attention to this most Urgent matter. Best Regard, *** EMAIL: *** PHONE:

I booked a flight through STA travels. At the time of the booking, my scheduled connecting flight had sufficient transfer time. However, my second flight *** had a time change and no one from STA travels notified me or change my flights to accommodate for the change. Thus, this left me with only 40 minutes to transfer at AKL (Auckland, New Zealand), which is insufficient amount of time. I didn't make the transfer and the flight left without me. No one from Air NZ can help me because the ticket holder is STA Travel. I tried to call STA Travel but the NZ company is independent from the US/UK so they wouldn't help me. I tried to email and tweet, but due to high volume of calls the STA travel messaged me back 2 hours after I made the inquiry. The email replied "Please contact our sales department on 9 AM Pacific time at +*** option 1" But I was at New Zealand time and would've like to go home as soon as possible. I also had no international call with my phone carrier. I tried to make inquiries for 5 hours at AKL. I finally got someone from United Airlines to help me reschedule and purchase a new ticket to LAX. My original destination is SFO. I paid $830 extra for the flight to LAX and $1040.22 for the original flights. I also spoke to a manager who told me I will be getting a fast (next day) reply, but it has been under "investigation" for about a month now and no one has sent me any updates to my case. I had to pay out of pocket for a mistake that STA travel made.

Hi We are no longer affiliated with you please ask the customer to submit their complaint to [email protected] Thanks Parisa ESTA Travel Cares Manager|STA Travel

Revdex.com: I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID, and find that this resolution would be satisfactory to me. I will wait for the business to perform this action and, if it does, will consider this complaint resolved. Regards

Very upset with STA travel. My opinion is STA relies on taking advantage of students. My daughter bought a ticket from them and the main parameter were shortest flights with 2-plus hours layover in between flights. She found the perfect flight meeting all requirements. For the return flight STA contacted her stating flight was changed, it now entailed a 3 leg flight with a 1 hour layover at one of the airports. She agreed to the change with the understanding that if the original flight was re-scheduled, STA (Francisca N- agent) would honor the original booking. Two weeks before the flight my daughter found the flight she was originally booked. About 7 phone calls and transfers to agents from STA, they refused to do anything. We have yet to hear from the agent (Francisca N). (Proof of e-mails attached below ).

I purchased an package of flights from STA travel (Boston to London Heathrow, London Gatwick to Athens). The package they sold me had an unfeasible connection time between Heathrow and Gatwick which was made even shorter when the first leg of my journey was delayed. When we arrived in Gatwick, the flight to Athens had already departed. I called STA Travel from Gatwick to receive assistance in rebooking the second leg and they were unwilling to assist me. My traveling companion and I were forced to rebook a new flight at our own expense. I have been in contact with the airline (Virgin) and STA Travel for the last seven months about receiving a refund. Virgin has acknowledged that we are entitled to a refund for the first leg of the flight and says they sent a check to STA Travel in July. However, STA Travel claims they have not received the check and have been completely unhelpful throughout this whole process.

I was contacted by STA and believed that I had to book my study abroad flight through them. They sent me over about 5 different flights options because everytime they sent me one they said that the offer would expire within the hour or in the next fifteen minutes. Being as I did not live on my computer I was unable to book the flight until about a month and a half before my trip because they "were unable to send my an itinerary any more in advance" I eventually booked my flight to Barcelona for a little under $1,500. At the same time I was looking at flights on the exact days I had told them for $700. I went ahead and booked with them because I thought I had to. In addition I requested a flexible ticket so that I could change the return date if needed for no additional fee. My STA agent Jessica Rogers informed me that STA does not have a flexible ticket. While my other friend who booked with STA has assured me that she in fact does have a flexible ticket through them and does not have to pay a change fee. Jessica also neglected to inform me that STA offers student discounts that I was eligible for. I requested to change my return flight and received an email saying I would have to pay $100 for the change fee and an additional $69 for the change in fair. However I am looking at flights for half the price of what they are saying once again. When I expressed this concern for where they're finding these expensive flights they stopped responding. In January I also wrote to Jessica and STA asking why their flights where so much more expensive than what I was finding, and once again they stopped responding.

My friend and I were scheduled to go on a trip to Amsterdam this Saturday (11/18). Last night I unfortunately fractured my foot and per doctors orders am on bed rest, making travel impossible. We booked our flight through STA so after receiving the doctors order I immediately contacted their emergency line, as I was instructed to do by one of their customer service representatives. I called in and explained the reason for my cancellation. I was then told that my cancellation fee was equal to the price of my ticket and there was no way for them to refund me. After speaking with them, they later said they could refund me only $100 or change my flight date. This offer was later rescended and they claimed no compensation could be given. I explained that this was a medical issue, one I could not control. They said I had the ability to cancel but no money would be given back to me despite my circumstances. This clause is written in tiny writing on their itinerary page and is not revealed upon purchase. Additionally, it was not told that our tickets were under the same refund policy as any other ticket. The $400 is an exorbitant and grotesque amount to be charging for a cancellation especially when it is due to a medical emergency. I am writing to the Revdex.com as my last hope as the company is unwilling to offer support to a college student. I hope you will do your best to help rectify this issue and offer some sort of compensation.

Hi ***, We are sorry that you are not happy with our previous responses. At the time of booking the full terms and conditions are agreed to and then sent through to you via email. I understand that these were confirmed by your friend however as you were both on the same booking she has agreed to these terms on behalf of everyone in the booking. The cancellation fees from the airline are $400 and therefore we are not able to offer you a refund and we would recommend that you contact your travel insurance to try and claim the funds back as you are cancelling due to a medical issue. If you need any further help or information please contact STA Travel again directly via your previous emails. Regards Natalie

Sta Travel Round the World Flights. Before planning any trip that involves multiple countries I will ALWAYS pop into STA Travel first to check on my round the world route. Both my children have used them for flights during backpacking holidays in Australia & Thailand. STA seem to target this market and sell cheap flights. My experience was that the tickets were cheap and inflexible, which is a problem for young people who's plans change.

So far, one of the most affordable flights I have found is with STA Travel. However, after looking them up online it seems like STA has received some pretty bad reviews. Are these bad reviews consistent with your experience with STA? Some advice would be greatly appreciated!
