By: Travelweek Group
WASHINGTON D.C. — Agents can now enroll in CLIA’s Travel Agency Membership and Individual Agent Membership programs, both of which help members attract more clients and increase their earnings.
Travel Agency Membership (TAM) is open to travel agencies, while Individual Agent Membership (IAM) is open to travel agents associated with a 2020 CLIA Travel Agency Member. Membership to both is valid through Dec. 31, 2020.
“The extraordinary response to CLIA membership in 2019 — resulting in the largest and most qualitatively strong membership roster in CLIA history — is a clear indication that CLIA credibility and member benefits are what travel professionals need and want,” said Charles Sylvia, ECC, Vice President, Membership and Trade Relations, CLIA. “As we launch 2020 open enrollment, our team has once again put together a benefits portfolio designed to help members reach their full potential in cruise sales. Thank you to our loyal members. It is a privilege to serve you.”
Here’s an overview of membership benefits:
• Booking credentials: Travel Agency Members’ CLIA Industry ID Number is their key to booking directly with CLIA’s cruise lines and partners.
• 2020 CLIA EMBARC ID: All Individual Agent Members receive this ID, the official credential of the global cruise industry. It provides preferred member pricing for Cruise360 and other events as well as access to CLIA member benefits, including cruise line and partner commissions.
• Professional development: CLIA development and training programs are rated the best in the industry and are available in a variety of formats that easily allow members to polish their skills or become certified through CLIA’s members-only certification programs. New for 2020, CLIA is adding Virtual Courses plus a new series of professional development webinars focused on managing business.
• Bonus commissions & personal travel discounts: Travel Agency Members and Individual Agent Members receive more than $3,000 in cruise line bonus commissions.
• Exclusive Members-Only Discounts: Members enjoy discounted pricing on CLIA courses, event registrations and more. New for 2020 is the CLIA affinity program, which offers discounts on office supplies, shipping and computers.
• Connect with key cruise line, destination and industry representatives: CLIA events, including Cruise360, provide members with an opportunity to network with others in the industry while enjoying a week’s worth of professional development, ship inspections and the latest industry trends.
• Relevant and timely information: CLIA’s monthly ‘Travel Agency Cruise News’ delivers the latest information straight to their inbox the fourth Tuesday of the month. Members also receive regular CLIA emails with members-only news alerts, an onboarding series to help them make the most of their CLIA membership.
• Agent Finder: Members get listed on CLIA’s online Agent Finder to promote themselves to clients looking for knowledgeable cruise-focused travel professionals. Individual Agent Members can boost their profile by purchasing a listing, making them searchable by zip code.

How to Get a CLIA Card: Requirements for KHM Travel Agents
Written by: Guest on April 16, 2017
Just as travel agents and host agencies use IATA (International Air Transport Association) numbers, for air travel, CLIA provides membership to travel agents who are planning to book cruise travel.
Obtaining a CLIA number will provide vendors with a way to confirm and identify you or your host agency as a seller of travel, and being part of CLIA provides you with opportunities for cruise line training and education
What is a CLIA Card?
Now that you’re familiar with Cruise Lines International Association, you might be wondering how to obtain a CLIA card. As part of working with an established host agency like KHM Travel Group, you do not have to obtain your own CLIA number to obtain the card. Issued by Cruise Lines International Association, the CLIA card is your travel agent identification card showing your membership with CLIA. It allows you to identify yourself to travel suppliers as being a part of CLIA.
A CLIA card is often used as proof that you’re a seller of travel for industry events such as trainings, seminars at sea, or FAM (familiarization trips ).
How Do I Get a CLIA Card?
KHM Travel Group is a Premier Agency Member with CLIA, based on our number of agents and now pays a memberships fee annually to CLIA on behalf of its agents to participate in the program.
As a Premier Agency Member, all KHM Travel Group agents who qualify are eligible to apply for an individual CLIA membership under KHM Travel Group, and can also receive a discount on their annual membership fee.
CLIA recommends that agents generate a minimum of $5,000 in total agency commissions from cruise bookings within the 12 months prior to enrollment. Realizing that it might be difficult for some agents to meet that criteria, KHM Travel Group has been given the ability to waive that requirement in the first year for our agents that meet the following qualifications:
- Must have completed CLIA’s State of the Industry Course located on the CLIA site under the “My Training” tab and click on “Online Learning Courses”
- Must have completed KHM Travel Group’s Agent Orientation – Destination 1: Getting Started on Your Journey
- Be in good standing with KHM Travel Group (Your membership with KHM Travel Group has not been in decline for the past 6 months)
New annual training requirements from CLIA as well as renewals for existing CLIA card agents can be found on their website and are subject to change. Current KHM Travel Group agents can learn more about joining CLIA in the Portal .
KHM Travel Group offers professional support and education for travel agents , and part of that support is devoted to assisting our independent agents in obtaining a CLIA card.

- Enlisted US Sailor Detained in Venezuela as Tensions Between the 2 Countries Simmer
An enlisted American sailor was detained by authorities in Venezuela on Friday and is still being held by the nation, a U.S. official confirmed to Military.com.
The official said Wednesday that the sailor was "not authorized to travel, meaning not on official travel or approved leave" when they were detained. The State Department is working with the Venezuelan authorities to secure the sailor's release, they said.
This sailor is now the third enlisted service member to be held by a hostile country in the span of just over a year: A U.S. soldier was briefly detained in North Korea , and another soldier is imprisoned in Russia . The news of the sailor's detention also comes just days after the Department of Justice announced the seizure of a private jet that was used by Venezuela's leader, President Nicolás Maduro.

The sailor's detention, which was first reported by CNN , seems to be the latest in a series of events that has showcased the growing tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela. Those tensions have been building since Venezuela's July 28 election between Maduro and Edmundo González, which officials from several countries say was stolen by Maduro.
On Monday, a judge aligned with Maduro's government issued an arrest warrant for González after the opposition leader published voting tallies claiming to show Maduro lost the election, according to The Associated Press.
The State Department has long warned U.S. citizens not to travel to Venezuela, citing "a high risk of wrongful detention."
The travel warning also notes that Venezuela's "security forces have detained U.S. citizens for up to five years" and the U.S. "is not generally notified of the detention of U.S. citizens in Venezuela or granted access to U.S. citizen prisoners there."
The unnamed sailor is just the latest in a string of service members to find themselves in the jail of a hostile nation after failing to heed travel warnings.
In May, Staff Sgt. Gordon Black was arrested in Russia and has been in prison there ever since.
Black was assigned to the Eighth Army at Camp Humphreys , South Korea, and was supposed to travel to an Army base in Texas, but he instead flew to Russia to meet his girlfriend, Aleksandra Vashchuk. Social media posts showed that the pair were in a relationship for at least a year while she was in South Korea.
Russian state-run media reported that while Black was in the Russian port city of Vladivostok he and Vashchuk got into an argument, during which he grabbed her by the neck and stole 10,000 rubles -- around $115 -- and spent the money on his hotel room.
The 34-year-old soldier was convicted of stealing and making threats of murder by a Russian court in June, and was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.
Before Black, Pvt. Travis King drew international attention in July 2023 when he left a tour group and dashed across the Demilitarized Zone into North Korea, which detained him for about two months.
King was also stationed at Camp Humphreys in South Korea and was supposed to board a plane back to the States after a spate of arrests by South Korean authorities led to jail time for him there.
The two cases suggest that the consequences for the sailor now detained in Venezuela will largely depend on whether U.S. officials are able to secure their return.
Lawyers for King said that the soldier reached a plea deal with the Army just last week over some of the charges he faced in the wake of his dash into North Korea.
Meanwhile, the only action the Army has taken on Black was to place him on "CCA," or "Confined Civilian Authority," status on May 13 -- just days before he pleaded guilty in his case.
