The Nara Desert Camp welcomes guests every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, which makes it the ideal spot to enjoy the workweek.

February’s – ‘The Love Issue’ –  Download Now

Founder of NARA Desert Escape, Stephanie Danial tells us the secret to creating the ultimate bespoke experience.

What do your first 30 mins of the day look like, your morning routine?

The first thing I do in the morning is to wake up my kids with a big kiss, then I either go for a walk or do a yoga class with Nitai. I also play tennis twice a week with my coach, Michal.

What inspired you to launch a bespoke desert experience?

I have been living in Dubai for around 11 years and our visiting friends always wanted to experience the desert. However, I realized that nothing unique existed so I decided to create it.  I wanted to share my passion for the desert and create a bespoke uplifting experience for everyone to remember. My vision was to offer a unique dining experience in the desert where restaurant standard cuisine is set in the un-spoilt beauty of the Dubai Desert. Nara stands for the initials of my four sons, Neil, Adam, Ryan and Adrian and I founded Nara Escape almost 3 years ago, with one tent and a dining table in the middle of the dunes and now I’m lucky enough to have not only Nara but Sonara along with future projects in the pipeline.

nara desert safari dubai

What has been the biggest hurdle since launching and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge was finding the land to open the camp, there are very few spots available in Dubai. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and presented my project and vision for Nara. They loved the innovative and eco-friendly elements and supported me in the idea.

You launched NARA first. Tell us about why you decided to launch sister brand SONARA and how it differs?

Nara Escape is for our private events this is where an individual guest or group of guests are able to select their own cuisine, entertainment and activities.

Sonara functions like a restaurant, where anyone is able to book an experience or table and will be offered the beautiful Mediterranean sharing menu prepared by amazing French Chef, Franck Sanna. Alongside the incredible dining experience, guests are able to enjoy a host of other activities and entertainment alongside sunset drinks at our unique lounge bar set up high on the sand dunes.

Since the initials of NARA stand for my four children, Sonara was imagined as a family destination with something special for all ages where guests can enjoy precious family time together.

You’ve grown so swiftly as a brand. To what do you attribute this growth?

To find the right balance between Nara and my children. When you start a company it takes 200% of your time and finding the right balance is essential. By also taking the time to realize what an asset social media is, has made a difference to our bookings with many bypassing the website and going straight onto social, making it imperative to keep all our news updated on our Instagram and we keep checking messages on a regular basis to ensure we haven’t missed any guest requests or questions.

nara desert safari dubai

Which Instagram accounts do you follow for inspiration?

I follow event companies that create unique weddings or birthdays, along with inspirational women who are either entrepreneurs or work towards a better tomorrow.

What advice would you give to your younger self, starting out?

Believe in your dreams, build your life step by step, and tomorrow is another day.

As a young brand, what is your approach to scaling the business?

I take it one step at a time. I first opened Nara Desert Escape as a private and exclusive concept and then Sonara camp as a restaurant. We also offer Nara on-the-go creating our unique settings wherever you need. I organized an amazing event in December, Nara on the Beach in RAK with amazing DJs such as Jamie Jones and Bedouin.

Are there any exciting plans in the pipeline for Nara Escape?

The next step is to open Nara in other Emirates and then in other countries. After having created this brand, I want to expand it to the moon.

You’ve included wellness and relaxation practices within the brand experience. Tell us about this?

I have practised yoga regularly for 25 years and practising this in the desert gives it a completely unique dimension, more on the lines of – recharging outside of the busy city. As the desert is a fresh location and the perfect retreat from the city to practice yoga and meditation, at Nara we offer yoga and meditation as part of the activities and at Sonara we can arrange morning yoga to start the day followed by our sunrise breakfast experience. As I’ve been practising yoga for 15 years now, it helps me keep my balance when leading such a busy life.

If you had not launched the brand, which other role would you choose career-wise?

I used to be a Private Banker for East Africa for 18 years and having my own company was my dream. I could not imagine doing anything else now, especially since I’m so passionate about this concept.

This issue is ‘The Love Issue’ – what is love to you?

‘Love means never having to say you’re sorry’ – It is a quote in the 1970 movie, Love Story.

Valentine’s offer

Set in the Arabian desert with a stunning picturesque surrounding, guests can also enjoy a magical Romeo and Juliet experience within the Dubai Conservation Area, this Valentine’s day with your loved ones, as you sip on a delicious mocktail sharing a specially curated menu by the head chef while you enjoy the contemporary Romeo and Juliet story.

NARA DESERT ESCAPE: A UNIQUE DESERT EXPERIENCE

From the stillness and through the windy dunes of sand to a mesmerizing luxury and eco-friendly camping experience..

admin

THE NARA COLLECTION

Nara offers guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and serenity of the desert, beyond the hustle and bustle of the city all while enjoying comfort and exclusivity. “À la carte” and entirely bespoke, Nara provides guests with the possibility of creating their desert safari experience from beginning to end. With options of tailor-made menus and a variety of culinary options to choose from, all dishes are prepared with great attention to detail and curated by world class resident chefs.

Nonetheless, the desert camp experience does not end just yet. Nara offers a variety of activities for every age range including camel riding, horse riding, henna painting, drumming lessons and buggy riding to name only a few. Guests can also un-wind with cocktails in a Middle Eastern atmosphere with live music, captivating light shows and belly dance performances.

With two private venues to choose from, guests can experience the desert in the pinnacle of dunes at Nara Escape or in a hidden desert gem at Nara Oasis both located within the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR). Providing a complete bespoke and sustainable desert experience, both private venues have been recognized by numerous high luxury brands and companies such as Dior, Louis Vuitton, Audemars Piguet and various international banks to host only the most unique private events.

THE SONARA COLLECTION

In the wake of Nara came a new dining experience in 2019: Sonara Dubai – the ultimate desert restaurant experience. Only a few minutes by shuttle from Nara, the venue’s magic can be noted from afar. Sonara’s shimmering light structure warmly welcomes guests to indulge in a traditional culinary experience with a set menu as well as live performances and entertainment.

Following on from its success, Sonara RAK (Ras Al Khaimah) opens in doors in December 2021. Located in the Al Wadi Nature Reserve in the Ritz Carlton, Sonara RAK is set in the same glamourous tone as its sister venue in Dubai, but this time amidst the Arabian wilderness and alongside gazelles and oryxs.

nara desert safari dubai

Embellishing Stephanie’s luxury collection, “The Nest” by Sonara launches in September 2022. Merging almost naturally with the sand dunes, “The Nest” is a peaceful and innovative sleeping concept consisting of 14 Nests designed by world-renowned architect Gianni Ranaulo. Each Nest has a comfortable living area to cater for up to 2 kids and 2 adults, each with an ensuite bathroom and a private terrace. A Nest lounge menu is served to guests in the evening and breakfast is served at dawn on the following day.

THE NARA NOMAD COLLECTION

In the early months of 2022, “Nara Nomad” emerged. Nara’s Secret City Tour experience is dedicated to the globetrotters who wish to discover Dubai in a unique and tailor-made fashion. Nara’s tour concierge carefully hand picks destinations and hidden gems of the city for an all-around immersive tour of Dubai curated for each guests’ personal interests and desires.

Extending Stephanie’s passion from the desert to the marine world, “Nara on The Sea” is yet another of Nara Nomad’s offerings. Guests are immersed on a remarkable voyage amid the majestic nature of the Omani gulf with a range of water sport activities and delicious cuisine prepared by our private chef. Divided into 3 cabins with ensuite bathrooms, the experience on the Dhabab can be reserved for 1 to 4 nights and can be entirely tailored to fit any adventurous wishes.

For the nature enthusiasts and for those looking to enjoy the great outdoors, Nara Nomad also offers “The Hike of Happiness”. With three hiking trails to choose from: The Showka Trail, the Hatta Trail or the Sheri Village Trail – the hikes unveil the beauty of the UAE through a memorable guided hiking trip. Destined to all hiker levels, the trail treasures wellness and bliss as a central aspect of the journey.

NARA IN THE CITY

Last but not least, “Nara in the City”, Stephanie’s latest catering concept launched in October 2022 brings both Nara’s expertise in cuisine and entertainment at the forefront of your doorstep. Whether it may be for a private party at home, a corporate event with large scale production, or on another hand, a special event in a unique venue of your choice, Nara in the City brings the magic to you anywhere, and at any time.

NARA SHOWS NO SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN

In the four years since its inception, Nara has grown from a solitary desert camp with two employees to a multi-concept, internationally renowned brand with close to 200 employees. What’s next for Nara? Stephanie shows no sign of slowing down in 2023, with enticing new concepts planned in Dubai’s desert hotspots alongside a string of global pop-ups.

Stephanie’s motto in life is “if you are capable of dreaming it, you are also capable of making it happen”

Monther Darwish

Founder and managing director, palazzo hospitality.

Over the last years, Palazzo Versace Dubai’s managing director Monther Darwish put the property on the map, coming up with innovative campaigns aimed at increasing occupancy and revenue. As a result, the property had one of the highest occupancies amongst city resorts in 2021/2022.

July 2022 set a milestone for the businessman, who launched Palazzo Hospitality, a new management company for luxury hotels, residential buildings and lifestyle brands that aims to reinvent the world of personalised luxury. Leveraging on the trusted expertise of a team of hospitality experts, Palazzo Hospitality will bring to the market a diverse range hotel brands, from ultra-luxury beach resorts to business and art properties. Founded by Monther Darwish, the company is dedicated to building world-class hospitality products.

The launch of Palazzo Hospitality comes after the success of the ultra-luxury hotel in Jaddaf Waterfront, which has witnessed an immense success due to the market positioning through different campaigns and new business products, like the e-commerce platform aimed to offer guests the ease to purchase an experience at Palazzo Versace Dubai.

The hotel’s e-commerce platform has generated millions in revenue. Darwish says: “Being an independent property gives you the freedom to experiment and that’s the beauty of Palazzo Versace Dubai. We’re free to throw into the market any crazy idea and our audience just likes how unique we are. We’ve been thinking outside the hospitality box for a while, bringing in new initiatives and projects that haven’t been implemented anywhere else in the industry. Our ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ idea was a tactic to attract younger guests, the new generation who like to experience luxury with ease of purchase”.

Palazzo Versace Dubai was also the first property to introduce a bidding platform for stays, while the F&B segment continued to be a focus for the property. F&B revenue increased, too, as Palazzo Versace Dubai came up with unique concepts that proved to be successful among UAE residents. The ‘Into the Jungle brunch’ at Giardino, Palazzo Versace Dubai’s all-day dining restaurant, was a concept focused on child-friendly activities and a great F&B offering. It has been fully booked every Friday since it launched in July 2020.

In 2022, the hotel revisited its strategies and formulated new ones to continue to bring in guests and stay above its competitors.

David Allan

Cluster general manager, radisson hotel group.

David has an ability to inspire and lead his team while continuing to fight at the forefront and his capability to communicate and comfort the owners and external stakeholders are only some of the traits where David differs distinctly from many of his contemporaries. Despite the challenging times, the hotels have been able to sustain a retention rate of over 90%, demonstrating the loyalty to his team and their commitment to each other. Everyone in the team has been a big part of supporting the wellbeing of others amidst the social distancing. From keeping the team healthy and fit by organising isolated fitness regimes, fun runs, or simply coming up with new ways of entertainment such as stay-home hobbies, story sharing, or cooking ideas, David was committed to supporting everyone’s mental wellbeing. Looking back, the teams have not only made it through 2020 with a smile, but they have also been able to achieve budget and forecast on the second half of 2020, a remarkable achievement given the circumstances. Looking at the financials for 2021, the hotels are in line with their forecast and ahead of budget for the first 6 months. His colleagues and team members will assure you; David is not only someone who lives and breathes hospitality, he is a true leader that does not only take care of business continuity but also understands what is required to meet the expectations of stakeholders, employees, and communities. “David is a highly gifted and very experienced General Manager who has not only coped with the arduous challenges of opening three full service hotels in three years, whilst continuing to manage all of them, but has successfully navigated a way through the pandemic growing market share, maintaining high levels of guest satisfaction and exceeding financial expectations. Whilst David has numerous achievements to be proud of, including being the first hotel to organise a vaccination day with DHA, he is most proud of not making any employees redundant despite the challenges of the pandemic, speaks volumes about his character”, said Bert Fol, Regional Director Arabian Peninsula & East Africa, Radisson Hotel Group.

Taking the lead for three hotel openings with total 1046 rooms within 4 years, in a competitive market, wasn’t tough enough, the biggest challenge has been the uncertainty of the past 16 months. Throughout the past year, the tourism and hospitality industry has very evidently been impacted by the crisis, leading to most hotels across the globe choosing to temporarily close due to low occupancy or restrictions. There is no doubt that this has been a difficult time for everyone, but no matter the circumstances, David would always try to emit calmness, underlining his commitment to his team, ensuring everyone’s wellbeing comes first while refusing to compromise on anyone’s job security. David did not only manage to retain all 369 team members across the three hotels, despite the very difficult cash flow situation that the hotels went through during the pandemic, he also secured business during the hard-hit period of the strict lockdowns and travel restrictions, by working closely with the Dubai Healthcare departments and offering support. Whilst many hesitated, David, recognised early that this new kind of business would help them to survive and get through the most difficult months. While the first weeks of lockdown and COVID-19 landscape and more than 700 repatriate stays, the teams had to learn to fully adapt. Between PPE equipment, strict hygiene measures, and self-isolating repatriates, David made sure to stay close to his team, while supporting and supervising them on this honourable journey. From controlling expenses, repurposing the hotel for essential service use, and temporary closure of another, David has had many factors to consider, but never forgot his responsibility towards his team members. Throughout the lockdown, David didn’t step foot out of the hotel, ensuring that his teams were looked after and never shied from questions. He made it a point to address all concerns as much as possible through personal interactions at the hotel as well as weekly newsletters. On the top of the agenda; transparency and support. Although the hospitality industry has had one of its most difficult years in terms of cash flow, David had made it his priority to support those with financial concerns be it rent or other commitments, through temporary accommodation in one of the hotels or financial support where possible. In terms of revenue results the grou had a record breaking profit conversion of 19.7 Million, a great achievement which could only be realised by a great team working under an exceptional leader.

Regarding revenue generation, Bill and his team adapted the hotel’s sales strategy during the pandemic, diversifying into long stay business for the hotel as well as reaching out to new markets, such as Israel. These new strategies helped maintain and support the business during the tough times and into 2021 helped drive more demand leading the hotel to achieve budget year to date. His kind and friendly demeanour combined with charismatic personality makes him approachable and well-trusted by his team which is reflected in the Associate Engagement results in 2021 where the hotel achieved 90% Engagement. And like a true mentor, Bill was overjoyed when promoting Nick Patmore (ex. Food & Beverages Director) to Hotel Manager last year. Nick’s promotion was a result of F&B exceeding its budget by 5 % in 2021, a huge achievement following a year where the hospitality and F&B industry were badly hit, helping for a speedy recovery for the hotel. If you were to ask Bill to pinpoint his favourite achievements, the avid animal lover would shout out the cat shelter project he has been part of lately. Timothy Kelly

Executive vice president and managing director atlantis resorts and residences.

Timothy Kelly, the Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Atlantis Resorts and Residences has grown the business from strength to strength after coming on board in November 2017. Although he has seen many successes over the years, these are a few of the most recent achievements to date: He successfully navigated Atlantis, The Palm through some of the most challenging years in hospitality history, not only to survive but to thrive, resulting in 2021 being the best year financially for the company since opening in 2008 (whilst also caring for over 3,000 colleagues).

Tim is not only leading the way for resorts in the Middle East but creating a product that is game changing on a global scale. During the pandemic, Tim took the move to embark on the world’s largest waterpark expansion and increased the waterpark by a third, so that with an additional tower and 28 new rides and attractions, we’re now home to the largest waterpark in the world offering over 105 different experiences to our guests. He also shook up the entertainment sector by bringing a slice of Ibiza to Dubai with Palmarama at WHITE Beach – a first of its kind partnership that had never happened before in the region that brought world class entertainment to the city in the middle of the pandemic in a responsible way.

2020 was a wonderful opportunity for Atlantis to give back to the community from a social standpoint and had the opportunity to do so in the partnership with the world-renowned artist Sacha Jafri. For over six months, Tim donated the space for Sacha to create the world’s largest canvas which was sold at a glittering auction at the resort for a staggering $62 million, raising money for children in need across the globe. This also achieved the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest painting.

In June 2021, Atlantis, The Palm announced its commitment to do business in ways that are good for both people and the planet with the resort’s first sustainability initiative Atlantis Atlas Project.

Tim is considered a hospitality heavyweight not only for his achievements, but mostly for his visionary leadership to helm not only one of Dubai’s, but one of the world’s leading entertainment destination resorts.

Co-founder and CEO, Lavoya Group

After more than two decades in the industry, restaurant pioneer Walid Hajj took on a new challenge and co-founded the new group Lavoya in 2021. His start has been something to behold.

In the past year alone, Walid has launched three hugely popular franchises: Joe & The Juice, Dave’s Hot Chicken and Barbar and has proved once more what a savvy operator he is, continuously seeking ways to innovate and cater to developing market demands.

Lavoya’s most recent launch, Joe & The Juice, has already cemented itself in the UAE dining scene, with the first two stores in Dubai rocketing to the top of the global locations, ahead of cities such as London, New York, and Paris.

Dave’s Hot Chicken, the LA-born street food sensation, backed by celebrities Drake and Samuel Jackson also broke a global sales record in the first week of operation in both Dubai and Qatar openings.

Barbar was already an icon in Lebanon when it launched in Dubai and Riyadh, with a 45-year history to draw upon. Now, the Hessa Street flagship store and the outlet in Riyadh’s Tahlia Street, rank as the top two in the Barbar’s franchise, while the recently opened Doha branch is also making waves with the World Cup visitors.

Before establishing Lavoya, Hajj founded Cravia, one of the GCC’s leading food and hospitality groups that brought world-class franchises to the Middle East, including Zaatar W Zeit, Seattle’s Best Coffee, Cinnabon, as well as Five Guys in Saudi Arabia. Thanks to his astute vision and leadership, Five Guys in Saudi Arabia currently outperforms all the brand’s global counterparts in sales and revenue.

Today, the company’s portfolio includes over 100 franchised restaurants across the Arab-speaking world, employing more than 3,000 individuals.

From brand negotiation to achieving operational excellence, Hajj strategically directed the growth story of Cravia, from inception to its circa US$200 million acquisition in 2016.

The restaurateur possesses an intrinsic sense of the ingredients for success. One thing that will quickly become apparent if you are planning a day tour or even an overnight experience out into the UAE desert is not all Dubai desert tours are alike!

Whilst the scene of 4×4 crashing their way through the dunes in Dubai might be a familiar one, understandably, for many, this is not their idea of fun, nor the most environmentally-friendly approach to seeing and experiencing the Dubai desert.

Understanding that this rich desert eco system needs to be protected, the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve was established in 2003. Covering an area of 225 square kilometres (nearly 5% of the Dubai Emirate), the area was designated as the country’s first National Park.

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is the premier destination for authentic nature-based experiences in the Dubai Emirate.

In order to control the fragile desert ecosystem while still allowing visitors to connect with nature, only a very limited number of tour operators and hospitality companies are permitted within the reserve’s boundaries, and they must operate according to strict guidelines.

You cannot enter the reserve unless you are part of an organised tour group. The currently authorised operators are:

If you are interested in free camping spots in Dubai, outside of the DDCR, check out this camping article .

It can certainly be confusing establishing which company to use when you see an endless list of Dubai desert tours advertised, so we have helped you here by picking out the tours on popular booking platforms Get Your Guide and Viator that are, in fact, based in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve rather than other parts of the Dubai desert.

We have not personally tested every one of these operators, so we’d be happy to hear any feedback in the comments – good or bad – you have about each of these mentioned; we can update our listing accordingly to be of most help to future visitors to Dubai.

A relatively new addition to DDCR is the Visitor Centre. Accessible by standard 2WD vehicles at the entrance to the park, you can find it here:

a map of where to find the dubai desert conservation centre in the UAE, marked with an Oryx

The DDCR Visitor Centre welcomes you to learn more about the indigenous fauna and flora of the Reserve and how they are working to protect the fragile ecosystem of the UAE’s first National Park.

You are guided through interactive displays and audio presentations. Children will enjoy the interactive Arabian Hare guiding their journey, and there’s plentiful information on the native species, from mammals and reptiles to insects and birds that frequent the reserve.

Finish your journey with views of the reserve from the rooftop deck and refreshments from the on-site Costa coffee shop.

Interactive displays in the DDCR visitor centre dubai desert education

The walk-in entry feee for the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Visitor Centre is:

  • AED 35 adults
  • AED 25 kids (5 to 18 years)
  • Discounts are available for Emirates Pass holders and Emirates Platinum Cardholders
  • Open daily 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Note that hot air balloon experiences may mention that you visit the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. They may fly over the air space of the DDCR, but in order to protect the fragile ecosystem, they cannot actually take off and land in the protected reserve.

You will find they are most likely using neighbouring farms as the launch point. Here are some bookable online experiences with views over DDCR:

  • Balloon flight with breakfast and falconry – (approx 4 hours) City pickups start from 4:30 AM in the hope of getting you up in the air for sunrise and a one-hour journey, including a falconry show from the balloon. After your balloon adventure, enjoy a cold-cuts gourmet breakfast before city return transfers . (Recommend over 5’s)
  • Balloon flight only with pick ups – (approx 3-4-hours) starting around 4:30 am for your hotel pick up, its a 45-minute drive out to the launch sites and you’ll get 40-70 minutes in the air, weather dependent.
  • You are looking at a cost of approximately AED 1100 for kids and AED 1350 for adults, on a shared basis. If you want complete privacy and seclusion, their packages go all the way to AED 12,950.

When you look for ballooning experiences in Dubai online, most are subsidiary tour companies making the booking and transfers on behalf of the actual balloon company – eg Nice Dubai Tours or Best Dubai Trip (Via Viator)

Hot Air Ballooning in the Dubai desert takes place from mid-September through until the end of May each year. You will not be able to go hot air ballooning in Dubai over the peak of summer .

Do check out some of the other tour providers below that can combine your hot air balloon experience with other overnight and breakfast experiences.

The licensed operators for daytime and nighttime safaris in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve include Arabian Adventures, Platinum Heritage, Travco and 57 Safari.

Please note that these are NOT your typical dune-bashing desert safari experiences ending in bedouin camp dinner. These are much more sedate affairs with an eco-tourism focus.

Platinum Heritage Safari

The leader in Dubai luxury desert experiences, there’s a high likelihood if the tour is advertised as Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, it is run by Platinum Heritage.

They offer a huge range of desert experiences from morning to evening, as well as camel treks and overnight camping options. Some favourites for day camps that we would highlight include:

  • 5-hour morning tour with breakfast (from 7:30 AM) – You will be picked up from your hotel in town and enjoy breakfast at Al Maha as well as an open-top vintage Land Rover nature tour.
  • Winter 2023-34 they are advertising a unique Royal Platinum desert dining experience with Michelin Star Chef Claudio Filippone, involving a six-course fine dining menu.

Arabian Adventures

Owned by Emirates, Arabian Adventures is one of the premier desert experience providers in Dubai. Some of their advertised desert adventures DO involve traditional dune bashing, whereas other VIP experiences and camel riding experiences are focused on the DDCR.

Please contact Arabian Adventures directly to find out which of their programs are based in DDCR and would suit your needs best.

Several overnight camp providers include a sedate, wildlife focused safari as part of their package – more on these below!

If you’re looking for a completely immersive overnight experience in the desert, these are the main providers licenced to operate within DDCR.

Al Maha A Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa

The most incredible Dubai desert views can be enjoyed from the tranquillity of your own private tent and infinity pool. This is not just any ordinary glamping ; this is 5* and more.

Guests can enjoy the privacy of their own room; with only 42 luxury suites on the site, they are well spread out, and your privacy is assured.

Guests can also join in with communal dining at the resort restaurant, indulge in the spa or take a look at the extensive recreation program, which includes nature walks, camel treks, desert safari, horse riding, wildlife drives, archery and falconry displays.

Al Maha Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

Note that this property is restricted to guests aged ten and over – even more of an excuse for an exclusive romantic retreat in the desert!

Sonara Camp

Sonara Camp, run by Nara, offers evening desert safaris, dinner, and luxury overnight camps. The meeting point for that self-driving is at the DDCR Visitor Centre, or most visitors will use their door-to-door pickup service from the city.

Sensational Dubai Glamping Spots - Sonara

After dark, bush meals are prepared while bedding is made ready, and a ranger takes you on a night tour to spot animal tracks. Enjoy your cosy night’s sleep before enjoying breakfast and a chance to meet the birds of prey.

They also offer desert safaris, focused on the indigenous wildlife and an opportunity to meet around the campfire, before you’re comfortable return to the city overnight.

  • Learn more about the Sand Sherpa overnight offering here.

A relative newcomer, your overnight experience with 57 Safari includes city pick-ups, followed by a vintage Land Rover nature trail experience. At your camp, enjoy a falcon show, camel rides, sisha lounge, 4 course dinner and evening entertainment.

Platinum Heritage

We will mention Platinum Heritage here as well, but do note that their over overnight camp experience takes place from a neighbouring property, you’re not actually sleeping in the DDCR protected area.

You can expect an evening desert wildlife tour followed by dinner and entertainment. When the evening-only guests leave, you will head to your accommodation in traditional-style Bedouin-style stone huts (all bedding provided and wash facilities, no showers), followed by breakfast in the morning and return to Dubai.

  • Check pricing on Get Your Guide for the Platinum Heritage overnight Desert Safari here (also offered here on Viator )
  • Check pricing on Viator for Platinum Heritage overnight + Morning Balloon experience

If you still can’t resist the pull to try some dune bashing and desert sports such as dune buggies , quad bikes and sand boarding, there are plentiful areas of the vast Dubai desert that have been set aside for this purpose.

Guests can check in with a welcome drink and nibbles before grazing through the curated tapas menu from Chef Franck Sanna and sipping from the complimentary mini-bar. A desert haven for nature, a living heritage for people

nara desert safari dubai

Our objective

nara desert safari dubai

DDCR was created to preserve the original landscapes and protect the indigenous flora and fauna of Dubai’s inland desert. Through careful and effective management, we aim to encourage the natural processes that lead to the rewilding of the desert habitat. Today, DDCR provides an authentic desert experience for people to enjoy the beauty of a natural environment and explore the living heritage of Dubai.

THE DUBAI DESERT CONSERVATION BOARD

In 2002, under the chairmanship of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, also the Chairman of Emirates, a management board composed of tourism, conservation specialists and government figures was chosen to oversee the establishment and operation of the DDCR.

After a major environmental audit of the surrounding areas and research on potential threat to endangered species, as wells as the long term quality of Dubai's tourism experience, the Dubai Conservation Reserve was established by special ruler's decree by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai and Vice President of the UAE. The conservation team of the Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa, which already managed the 27km2 conservation reserve in the area, then officially took over the operations of the DDCR.

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum

Chairman of Emirates and President of the Department of Civil Aviation

Mr. Ali Soori

Executive Vice President

We've set the following strategic management goals for a period of five years until 2024.

  • A new rewilding paradigm for regional desert conservation that fosters thriving habitats and a diversity of indigenous species
  • Achieve and maintain a balance between all species populations, particularly ungulates and the natural regenerative properties of the available vegetation.
  • Ensure that all management interventions and practices are sustainable and geared towards natural habitat rehabilitation.
  • Maintain the reserves position as an IUCN Green List protected area with effective management, good governance and planning that optimise conservation outcomes.
  • Maintain the DDCR's position as a regional leader in biodiversity conservation and building resilience to climate change in arid land ecosystems.
  • Become the premier destination for authentic nature-based experiences in the UAE.

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR), an area of 225 square kilometres, 4.7% of Dubai’s total land area, was created to protect the last remaining pristine desert landscape of this forward thinking emirate.

Resort managers began a major environmental audit of the surrounding areas. Researchers were tasked with exploring current and potential threats to endangered species and disappearing desert habitats, as well as the long-term quality of Dubai’s desert tourism experience.

The Al Maha management submitted proposals to the government on the formation of a formal national park.

The proposal was accepted and the Dubai Conservation Board was established.

The Board established a detailed constitution and all the necessary regulatory measures were in place for the physical creation of the Reserve. Emirates airline entered into a five year sponsorship deal worth over US$ 14 million. Additional funds of US$7 million were set aside by the Dubai Government to create the initial infrastructure and facilitate the start-up work.

The Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa was established with a 27km² conservation reserve, for the protection of desert fauna and flora.

70 Arabian oryx are re-introduced 6000 indigenous trees and shrubs are planted.

FLORA AND FAUNA

The importance of species diversity.

nara desert safari dubai

Maintaining a balanced ecosystem is critical to our goal of creating a sustainable natural desert habitat.

Starting with 70 Arabian oryx in 1999, there are 400 oryx currently on the reserve, the largest free-roaming herd of its kind in the UAE. In addition, there are approximately 300 Arabian Gazelles and 100 Sand Gazelles.

Along with the reintroduction of oryx, we planted 6,000 indigenous trees and shrubs. Acacia trees and Calligonum shrubs have since become a welcome, naturally occuring addition to the original seeding project.

In 2003, there were 60 recognised birds in the DDCR. With the improvement of the environment, we now record 126 species. Other species that occur naturally include the Gordon’s Wildcat, Arabian Hare, Ethiopian Hedgehog and the Arabian Red Fox. There are also a number of reptiles as well as both resident and migrating bird species.

Currently, 74 plants, 18 mammals, 26 reptiles, 140 bird species and 300 arthropods call DDCR their home.

Preserving our desert habitat with you

With the support of our approved tour operators and the public, we've put measures in place to help maintain the DDCR.

  • Using solar power to pump water from water holes
  • Recycling waste at all the tour operators' camps
  • Providing limited access to designated areas on the reserve to selected tour operators for minimal impact
  • Training tour guides in best practice methods for conducting desert excursions and increasing their knowledge of wildlife and conservation practices
  • Placing strict limits on all activities that have an environmental impact
  • Careful zoning within the reserve to limit vistor trafic and unnecessary interference on the more vulnerable habitats and particularly sensitive locations

No effort has been spared to protect the fragile desert ecosystem. The Reserve represents a permanently protected area ensuring the future of the region’s desert habitats and bio-diversity managed according to sound scientific ecological principles, aimed at protecting natural resources and maintaining original desert landscapes.
