PGA Tour Championship Winners and History

pga tour championship winners list

The final event of the PGA Tour season the Tour Championship has since 2007 been the final event in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

When it debuted in 1987, the PGA Tour Championship featured the top 30 players from the year’s money list. The tournament took place in November, just after the corresponding event on the European Tour. The event finalized the money list for the season.

To avoid the college and football seasons, the 2019 Tour Championship has been pushed up to August from September, where it had been scheduled since 2007.

The 2019 edition introduces other changes as well. First, the FedEx Cup playoffs were truncated from four events to three. Thirty players still qualify for the event, however.

Second, the confusing points system has been modified to give players “strokes” heading into the tournament. The playoff leader, for example, will start at -10. The second place player starts at -8. The third seed is at -7; fourth at -6; the fifth at -5. Seeds 6 – 10 begin the tournament at -4; 11 – 15 at -3; 16 – 20 at -2; 21-25 at -1. Seeds 26 – 30 start at even par.

The new system is both easier to understand and eliminates the possibility of having one player win the Tour Championship and another win the Fedex Cup. (for example, in 2008, the Tour Championship was won by Camilo Villegas, while Vijay Singh won the FedEx Cup. In 2009, Phil Mickelson won the Tour Championship, while Tiger Woods won the FedEx Cup.)

In the COVID year of 2020, the PGA TOUR Championship was rescheduled from August 27 – 30 to September 4 – 7.

A complete list of PGA TOUR Championship Winners follows. Beginning in 2019, the score displayed is in relation to par: -total with strokes (-actual to par)

List of FedEx Cup Champions

The 2024 FedEx Cup Champion will cash $25 million. Here's the list of past FedEx Cup Champions.

Since 2007, the PGA Tour has used the FedEx Cup Playoffs to determine the season’s champion. Winning the FedEx Cup not only comes with the title of FedEx Cup Champion, but a 5-year PGA Tour exemption and a nice payout as well.

In 2023, Viktor Hovland collected a cool $18 million for capturing the title. That $18 million came from a bonus pool of $75 million that was distributed among the 30 players who qualified for the Tour Championship, the final stage of the FedEx Cup playoffs, making it the biggest purse on the PGA Tour .

In 2024, that bonus pool is jumping up to $100 million, and the 2024 FedEx Cup champion will walk away with a $25 million bonus.

Let that sink in for a minute.

From 2007 to 2018, the FedEx Cup playoffs consisted of four playoff events to whittle 125 players down to one champion. However, complications arose throughout the Tour Championship as there were two titles in the balance, one for the tournament and another for the season-long FedEx Cup.

In 2019 the PGA Tour addressed this issue with a staggered start format for the Tour Championship. Under the new format, players begin the tournament anywhere from even par up to 10-under, based on their FedEx Cup standing heading into the championship. The winner of the tournament is then also the FedEx Cup Champion and receives a hefty payday . The playoff schedule also shifted from four tournaments to three, but still includes the top 125 players from the FedEx Cup standings.

List of FedEx Cup Winners

Here is the complete breakdown of all-time FedEx Cup winners since the playoffs began in 2007. From 2007-18, the winner of the FedEx Cup cashed a $10 million bonus check, a figure that increased to $15 million from 2019-21, and $18 million in 2022. Beginning in 2024, it's jumping to $25 million.

FedEx Cup Staggered Start Breakdown

Since 2019, the PGA Tour has used the following breakdown to stagger the start of the Tour Championship based on point standings, giving the leader heading into the final event a two-stroke lead on his nearest competitor, and a 10-stroke lead over the last five players to qualify for the finals. Here is the complete breakdown.

tour-championship-trophy-2023-g.jpg

Following an exciting regular season, the PGA Tour hosts a three-tournament postseason, the 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs, which concludes with a massive Tour Championship where the majority of the grand total $100 million purse is dished out to golfers. In fact, the $25 million top prize is tied for the largest payout on the PGA Tour this season with the Players Championship.

Only 70 golfers advanced to the first round of the playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, same as last season. With 40 of those players now eliminated following the BMW Championship, the field has thinned in terms of the best golfers in the world able to compete for the league's top prize. There's plenty of star power still remaining, though, with Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele atop the standings and other significant players like Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark in contention.

For Scheffler, a FedEx Cup win would be his first, but it would also serve as a feather in his cap on the back of a stellar season that already includes six PGA Tour victories and an Olympic gold medal. The same goes for Schauffele, a two-time major championship winner this season.

Let's take a closer look at what has occurred and what we can still expect from this year's festivities.

2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs schedule

The top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings, via points accumulated throughout the year, played in the St. Jude Championship with 50 competing in the BMW Championship prior to the field being trimmed for the final time.

All three events are 72-hole, stroke-play tournaments, though the fields gradually get smaller as the playoffs roll on. The points change, too, as everything is quadrupled. During regular-season events, most winners receive 500 FedEx Cup points for finishing first at tournaments (in a handful of events, 600 points went to first place). The winners of the first two FedEx Cup Playoffs events will instead receive 2,000 points each. The point boost goes for every slot on the leaderboard: 300 for second becomes 1,200 and so on.

Only seven golfers surpassed the 2,000-point total during the entire regular season: Scheffler, Schauffele, McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Ludvig Åberg and Sahith Theegala. Scheffler opened these playoffs with nearly a 3,500-point lead on third-place McIlroy -- who has since fallen off the pace -- while Schauffele himself was 1,500 points up on the rest of the field.

Winners are disproportionately rewarded and deservedly so given this is the postseason. This provides the opportunity for golfers to go on a hot streak and rocket up the FedEx Cup standings like Hideki Matsuyama and Keegan Bradley did over the first two weeks.

The top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings after the St. Jude Championship move on to the BMW Championship. Then the top 30 after that move on to the Tour Championship.

2024 FedEx Cup standings

Scheffler and Schauffele are having extraordinary seasons. They rank No. 1 and No. 3 on the all-time single season money list at $29.2 million and $18.4 million, respectively, following the second playoff event. Those numbers are officially locked in as money from the FedEx Cup does not count toward a player's official money.

Here's a look at the top 30 in the standings following the BMW Championship.

Matsuyama made a move to third by winning the St. Jude Championship. Bradley was the big mover at the BMW Championship as he barely got into the second playoff event but is now in fourth as the Tour Championship begins.

2024 Tour Championship format

Heading into the Tour Championship inside the top five or top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings is important because of how scoring is dispersed. Whoever is first in the FedEx Cup standings after the BMW Championship starts the Tour Championship at 10 under, and the event is played under normal scoring conditions from there.

With so much money at stake (again, $25 million for first place), those margins become more meaningful than even a normal week. The eventual winners of the four FedEx Cups played under this format have all started in the top seven at the Tour Championship.

  • 10 under -- Scottie Scheffler
  • 8 under -- Xander Schauffele
  • 7 under -- Hideki Matsuyama
  • 6 under -- Keegan Bradley
  • 5 under -- Ludvig Åberg
  • 4 under -- Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns, Patrick Cantlay
  • 3 under -- Sungjae Im, Sahith Theegala, Shane Lowry, Adam Scott, Tony Finau
  • 2 under -- Ben An, Viktor Hovland, Russell Henley, Akshay Bhatia, Robert MacIntyre
  • 1 under -- Billy Horschel, Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Matthieu Pavon, Taylor Pendrith
  • Even -- Chris Kirk, Tom Hoge, Aaron Rai, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Justin Thomas

The figures are startling for the finale. The winner of the Tour Championship receives $25 million. Second place is $12.5 million! Here's a look at what the lucrative top 10 will look like at the Tour Championship.

  • 1st: $25 million
  • 2nd: $12.5 million
  • 3rd: $7.5 million
  • 4th: $6 million
  • 5th: $5 million
  • 6th: $3.5 million
  • 7th: $2.75 million
  • 8th: $2.25 million
  • 9th: $2 million
  • 10th $1.75 million

Last year, Viktor Hovland won the BMW Championship and then took the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup over Schauffele. Both players shot the same 19-under score at East Lake to end the year, but Hovland started the tournament at 8 under while Schauffele only started it at 3 under so Hovland easily won by five and took home the first prize of what was then $18 million.

PAST CHAMPIONS

pga tour championship winners list

Already the best in the world, Scottie Scheffler added another layer to his legend Sunday. He became the first player to win back-to-back in 50 years of THE PLAYERS Championship by matching the biggest comeback and the lowest closing round by a winner.

pga tour championship winners list

Scheffler ran off five straight birdies in the middle of his round, built a six-shot lead and left all the drama to everyone else on his way to a 3-under 69 to win the richest prize on the PGA TOUR by five shots.

pga tour championship winners list

In a dynamic conclusion to five days of bad weather and high drama, Smith one-putted eight of his last nine holes with his pure stroke and delivered one of the gutsiest shots of his career for the cushion he needed to win.

pga tour championship winners list

While others melted down, Thomas went 5 under on holes 9-12, including an eagle at the par-5 11th hole, to seize control. He went even par the rest of the way for his 14th PGA TOUR victory.

pga tour championship winners list

McIlroy, a former FedExCup champion, earned 600 FedExCup points, a $2.25 million check and is the proud owner of the redesigned PLAYERS trophy.

pga tour championship winners list

Simpson’s record-setting streak continued on moving day, where he fired a 68 to tie the 54-hole scoring record and extend his lead to seven strokes, the largest 54-hole lead in THE PLAYERS history. Simpson had not only conquered the Stadium Course; he had outplayed the best field in the game.

Remarkably, the experience provided the confidence Kim, 21, needed to become the youngest winner of THE PLAYERS and join Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia and Jordan Spieth as the only players with two PGA TOUR wins before the age of 22.

pga tour championship winners list

Day had started with a record-tying 63, added a 66, and went 73-71 on the weekend for 15-under 273 to win by four over Kevin Chappell. It was simple, said his opponents: Day is ferocious off the tee, relentless with his irons, and has arguably the best short game going.

When THE PLAYERS folklore is circulated, Fowler at the island-green 17th will resonate loudly. He birdied it in regulation, then again in the playoff (as did Kisner). Now a sudden death back at 17, Fowler for a third time in less than an hour stuffed his shot within 7 feet, made his third birdie, and prevailed when Kisner missed. (For the week, Fowler birdied 17 five out of six times.)

pga tour championship winners list

When one final par putt fell, a slippery 3 ½-footer on 18, Kaymer with a 71 was done at 13-under 275, one better than hard-charging Jim Furyk (66).

pga tour championship winners list

It was Woods’ 78th career win, but more notable was this: He became just the sixth player with at least two wins in THE PLAYERS.

pga tour championship winners list

With water everywhere at 16-17-18, Kuchar needed the “What, Me Worry?” persona like never before. And he delivered: A birdie at 16 put him back up by three, a bogey at 17 hardly crushed his chances, a par at 18 for a round of 70 and at 13-under 275 he won by two over a foursome of talented names (Fowler, Laird, Ben Curtis and Zach Johnson).

pga tour championship winners list

Choi, 40, and Toms, 44, each shot 2-under 70, but the closing swings of momentum were memorable — a bogey for Toms at 16, a birdie for Choi at 17, a birdie for Toms at 18. The three-putt bogey by Toms at the island-green 17th in the playoff provided the clinching drama.

pga tour championship winners list

Clark had piled up massive amounts of prize money without winning, making him sort of a trivia answer. But thanks to a perfect storm — third-round leader Lee Westwood shot a closing 74 and his closest pursuers, Robert Allenby and Lucas Glover had 70s — Clark put on a mid-round blitz of five birdies in six holes, shot 67, and claimed the $1.71 million prize.

Few have risen to the occasion at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass quite like the Swede did that day. He made six birdies and recorded the only bogey-free fourth round, matched the low score of the day, and made a five-stroke deficit evaporate.

pga tour championship winners list

Warm and blustery winds moved wildly and indiscriminately throughout THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, but that was nothing compared to the haphazard dash made by thousands of fans after the final hole of regulation at THE PLAYERS Championship 2008.

Doubt Lefty at your peril, because he’s a fascinating study in determination and he proved that again at the 34th edition of this showcase event on the PGA TOUR. Every world-class player was in attendance, but it was Mickelson who shined brightest as he overtook 26-year-old Sean O’Hair in the final round, the highlight to his three-win season.

pga tour championship winners list

His third back-nine 33 of the week gave him the best score of the day, a 5-under 67, and at 14-under 274 he whipped Retief Goosen (69) by six in the 25th go-round for the championship at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

pga tour championship winners list

Funk’s fourth-round 71 came on a day when the field average was 76.512. He birdied the par-5 16th to seize the lead, then made a 5-foot putt to save par at 18 and secure a one-stroke win over Luke Donald (76), Scott Verplank (70) and Tom Lehman (66).

pga tour championship winners list

A wedge to 10 feet set up his putt for 70 and 12-under 276, good for a one-stroke win. The youngest winner of THE PLAYERS, Scott did it in his debut, no less.

Love was determined to answer critics who felt he had underachieved, despite 15 wins. So, while there was quantity (a $1,170,000 prize), Love embraced quality — golf’s best field and purest test in the 30th anniversary of the showcase event on the PGA TOUR.

Consider March 24, 2004, the final round of THE PLAYERS Championship when Craig Perks left everyone giddy, though speechless and stunned at the same time.

pga tour championship winners list

Woods stormed back with a third-round 66 punctuated by a 60-foot birdie putt at the island-green 17th that rode two tiers and broke three times before falling. “Better than most,” was the iconic call by NBC’s Gary Koch, and indeed it might have been as good as anything fans had ever seen.

pga tour championship winners list

Consider the closing moments to THE PLAYERS Championship 2000 when Hal Sutton coached his ball toward the final green. “Be the right club,” Sutton said as his 6-iron shot from 179 yards tracked the flagstick. “Be the right club today.”

THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass was firm, fast and tough — conditions that suited Duval’s focused personality. He was a kid from Jacksonville Beach. Just a few hours down the Florida coast, Duval’s father, Bob, was in contention at a PGA TOUR Champions tournament.

There were wild cheers for Leonard’s brilliance — with a fourth-round, 5-under 67 to finish at 10-under 278, he won for the third time in nine months, each time overcoming a final-round deficit.

With rounds of 66-69-68-69, Elkington finished at 16-under 272 to establish THE PLAYERS record for margin of victory, seven strokes over Scott Hoch, who stumbled home with a closing 74.

As for Couples, who finished at 18-under 270 to join select company with two wins in THE PLAYERS, this was life at the other end of the golf spectrum: “It was a pretty easy 64.”

Up by two, Janzen showed his heralded grit with up-and-downs from a bunker at the island-green 17th and greenside rough at 18 for 1-under 71 and 5-under 283, one clear of Langer.

A $250,000 purse in 1974 was now $2.5 million and with Norman’s victory, it meant that of the 21 championships played during Beman’s tenure, a future Hall of Famer had won 12 times.

When Price scratched out a win in 1991 and two more in 1992, he felt relieved. But when he put on a clinic at THE PLAYERS Championship 1993, the Zimbabwean knew he had arrived.

Fred Couples had set a course-record 63 Saturday to get within one of Love, but never got closer. This time, THE PLAYERS was truly a Love story.

Birdies early (Nos. 2 and 3) and late (island-green 17th) were instrumental for Mudd, then in the midst of his best season. He would also win the TOUR Championship in the fall and finish fifth on the money list in 1990. Six years later, however, Mudd walked away from the game at the age of 36.

Everything about the bottom line to THE PLAYERS Championship 1989 had a consistency to it that made sense. The deepest and toughest field of the year was won by the season’s best player, Tom Kite, leading money-winner ($1.395 million) and Player of the Year.

McCumber had every reason to be emotional after a brilliant performance (65-72-67-69 for 15-under 273) to establish a new 72-hole scoring mark at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

pga tour championship winners list

The first playoff at the Stadium Course and the first $1 million purse at THE PLAYERS ended at the next hole with mixed results on putts for par – Jeff Sluman missed his 12-footer, Lyle made his 8-footer. “I have a fairly low heartbeat in those situations,” Lyle said.

Anything can happen over those closing holes; unfortunately for Larry Mize it was all negative, bogeys at 15, 16 and 18 allowing Mahaffey to storm into the winner’s circle by one at 13-under 275.

No one who studied the landscape would have called it a surprise, not with Peete’s uncanny driving ability. It was Peete’s ninth PGA TOUR win since 1982, and no one had won more in that time frame.

What was for Couples, whose syrupy swing authored trips of 71-64-71-71 for 11-under 277 and for the second straight year a 24-year-old earned the game’s richest prize against the best field in golf.

Considered to have been Rookie of the Year in 1982, Sutton used his win at THE PLAYERS to top the money list in 1983 ($426,668) and win Player of the Year honors.

The perfection reached a crescendo at THE PLAYERS Championship 1982 when Pate authored an unforgettable script to usher this showcase event into a new era.

Not only did he take THE PLAYERS prize of $72,000, but Floyd — a winner the week before — earned a $200,000 bonus for having won two straight on the Florida swing.

Coming home in 2-under 70 for a 10-under 278 total, Trevino outshined Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, both of whom shot 73.

In Round 4, conditions were again demanding, but Lanny Wadkins was at his ball-striking best, a closing 72 eclipsed only by Tom Watson’s 71. At 5-under 283, Wadkins beat Tom Watson by five as Lee Trevino faded to a share of fifth with a 79.

pga tour championship winners list

Nothing scintillating about his round, Nicklaus conceded, but his smile confirmed that there was everything to like about winning THE PLAYERS for the third time in five years.

Mark Hayes claims THE PLAYERS 1977 title in 40 MPH winds

Six behind after the first day, the then 27-year-old Hayes, a two-time winner in 1976, shot a second-round 74 in 40 mph winds. Weekend scores of 71-72 left Hayes at 1-over 289, the only over-par score that won a PGA TOUR tournament that season.

The final-round 65 for 19-under 269 quieted the doubters. It also accounted for Nicklaus’ 60th career win and was a fitting way to usher THE PLAYERS into its new home base, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

pga tour championship winners list

The only man to break 70 each day, Geiberger won for the second time in 1975 and it was the seventh of his 11 career wins.

THE PLAYERS was launched fittingly: The best player won the TOUR’s best tournament against the strongest field.

2024 Tour Championship past winners: List of last 10 years winners explored

T he Tour Championship is upon us. The golf world, for the last time this season, will turn its focus to the PGA Tour for the final tournament.

After 36 events and the last two weeks of playoffs, just 30 golfers remain and only one will be crowned the season champion this weekend. Which golfers have been given that honor in the last decade?

Previous Tour Championship winners explored

The PGA Tour staggers points for all golfers in the Tour Championship. For example, this year, Scottie Scheffler enters ranked first, so he begins the tournament 10 under. That makes it easier for him and others at the top to win. In most years, someone who has had a good start ends up winning.

In 2023, that was Viktor Hovland . He shot 27 under across the weekend, defeating Xander Schauffele by five strokes. Rory McIlroy shot 21 under in 2022. That was enough to defeat Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im by one stroke.

In 2021, Patrick Cantlay was also -21, putting him one stroke above Jon Rahm for the victory. Rahm and Kevin Na had the best total output in the tournament, but the staggered scoring left Rahm without a win.

Dustin Johnson also shot -21 in 2020. He won the Tour Championship by three strokes over Schauffele and Justin Thomas . McIlroy was also the champion in 2019, shooting 18 under to beat Schauffele by four strokes.

Tiger Woods took home the trophy in 2018. He shot 11 under, beating Billy Horschel by two strokes. Schauffele earned the win the year before, shooting 12 under and landing one stroke up on Thomas.

McIlroy won again in 2016, this time in a playoff. His -12 wasn't enough initially to beat Kevin Chappell and Ryan Moore. Jordan Spieth won in 2015 thanks to a nine-under outing. That was four strokes up on Danny Lee, Henrik Stenson, and Justin Rose.

In 2014, Horschel finished three strokes ahead of Jim Furyk and McIlroy to capture the Tour Championship.

This year, Scheffler will look for the first such victory of his career and he begins 10 under to help him do that. Schauffele, who does have a win but plenty of close losses, will be right behind him at eight under.

Hideki Matsuyama (-7) and Keegan Bradley (-6) are also not far behind to start the tournament this week.

It's shaping up to be a wonderful competition and one of the golfers in the field will add their name to this historic list. The tournament begins August 28 and ends September 1. Unsurprisingly, Scheffler is this weekend's betting favorite at -110 to win it all (CBS Sports).

PGA Tour Championship

Saturday marked the final moving day of the 2024 PGA Tour season at the Tour Championship in Atlanta. The 30 players in the field tried their best to be in position for a strong final round tomorrow at East Lake Golf Club.

However, the course was playing a slightly bit harder than yesterday with some challenging pin locations and firm greens.

Here are 10 winners and losers from the third round of the 2024 Tour Championship.

Winner: Scottie Scheffler

PGA: TOUR Championship - Third Round

Scottie Scheffler just continues to hold on to the lead, shooting 5-under 66. Despite an opening bogey on Saturday, Scheffler shot 6-under par the rest of the way. He now has a five-stroke lead going into the final round. Scheffler finished strong with three straight birdies and four in the final five holes. He is 18 holes away from possibly having one of the best seasons in PGA Tour history. Scheffler has six wins, a green jacket and an Olympic Gold medal this year and could have his first FedEx Cup title tomorrow.

Winner: Collin Morikawa

PGA TOUR Championship - Third Round

Collin Morikawa did his best to keep up with Scheffler, firing a 4-under 67. Morikawa’s only birdie came sandwich in between two birdies at the par-4 seventh. Like Scheffler, Morikawa finished strong as well, making three birdies over his final four holes. Morikawa will look to put together a comeback FedEx Cup win like Rory McIlroy did a couple of years ago trailing by six to win against Scheffler.

Loser: Xander Schauffele

PGA TOUR Championship - Third Round

If Thursday’s struggle were a low, Saturday was worse for Xander Schauffele. Everything did not go Schauffele’s way. He was negative in all four strokes and gained statistics (off the tee, approach, around the green and putting). Schauffele just hit 6-of-14 fairways and 10-of-18 greens in regulation. As a result, he had to scramble eight times. Schauffele made bogeys on the opening hole and the par-4 fourth to set him back from the start. He was able to make birdie on the par-4 fifth and the par-3 15 th to salvage his round.

Winner: Viktor Hovland

PGA Tour Championship

Viktor Hovland did what Schauffele did yesterday, bouncing back. After a 1-under 71, Friday, Hovland shot a 6-under 65. He was bogey-free 4-under through his first 12 holes before his only bogey Saturday on the par-4 13 th . However, he responded with back-to-back birdies, including making a 17-foot putt on the par-3 15 th . Hovland took advantage on the other par-5 of the back nine, the 18 th to put the cherry on top of a solid round. He ranked third in strokes gained and fifth in strokes gained approach to fuel his round.

Loser: Tony Finau

PGA TOUR Championship - Third Round

After a great second round with a 5-under 66, Tony Finau struggled in Saturday’s third round with a 3-over 74. Finau did not get off to a good start either with a double bogey on the opening hole. He then bogeyed the par-4 seventh before another bogey on the 12 th . That came before his only birdie on the day on the 14 th . Finau was also last in both strokes gained around the green and strokes gained putting.

Winner: Sahith Theegala

PGA Tour Championship

Sahith Theegala had a strong back nine Saturday to move into third place heading into Sunday’s final round. Theegala shot 5-under 66, which included making seven birdies over his final eight holes and five straight to finish. He was given a two-stroke penalty for grounding his club in the bunker on the par-3 fourth. Theegala was fourth on the day with 1.990 strokes gained putting and second in greens in regulations.

Loser: Aaron Rai

PGA Tour Championship

Aaron Rai shot 5-under 66 Thursday but has fallen since. He shot 1-under 70 yesterday and recorded 1-over 72. He fell back to 5-under par for the tournament and tied for 22nd entering the final round. It was only a five-hole stretch that prevented Rai from having a good round. He bogeyed No. 3 and 4 before a double bogey on the par-4 fifth. Although he recorded a birdie on the par-5 sixth, he gave that stroke immediately back with a bogey on the par-4 seventh. He was able to make three birdies over his final four holes to salvage his round heading into Sunday.

Winner: Shane Lowry

PGA Toru Championship

Shane Lowry joined Hovland by shooting 6-under 65 for the best round on Saturday. Like Hovland, Lowry made one bogey, which came on the par-4 12 th . Outside of that, Lowry made seven birdies, including three straight from holes No. 13-15. Lowry made four birdies on the opening 11 holes before his lone blemish, as he went back-to-back on the par-5 sixth and the par-4 seventh.

Loser: Tom Hoge

PGA Tour Chamionship

It had been a couple of good days for Tom Hoge before Saturday. He was 5-under par through the first 36 holes. However, he gave all five of those strokes back Saturday, with a 5-over 76 with no birdies. Hoge bogeyed the opening hole before recording a double bogey on the par-4 fifth as a result of not getting his approach on the green in regulation. Ten straight pars came before finishing his final three holes with two bogeys. Hoge went into the water on the final hole as a result of not hitting the fairway off the tee. He was last in the field with -4.491 strokes gained approach.

Winner: Russell Henley

PGA Tour Championship

Russell Henley also had a solid, bounce-back performance in the third round. After an even par 71 Friday, he recorded his second 4-under 67 of the week. Henley recorded three birdies over his final five holes, including back-to-back on the par-4 16 th and the par-4 17 th . He was able to get his approach to about 11 feet on both holes to set up both birdies. Henley was fifth in both strokes gained putting and strokes gained around the green to fuel his round.

Here's What Each Player Will Earn From 2024 Tour Championship's $100 Million Jackpot Purse

Jeff ritter | aug 29, 2024.

East Lake is once again the site of the season-ending Tour Championship, where $100 million in prize money is up for grabs

The 2024 PGA Tour season wraps this week with the Tour Championship at East Lake, and the finale is also a huge-money week for the 30 Tour pros who advanced to the playoffs' final round. A staggering $100 million in prize money is up for grabs.

The winner this week will claim a $25 million bonus, which is a $7 million jump from Viktor Hovland's first-place prize from this event in 2023. Second place this week will bag $12.5 million and third will take $7.5 million. Scottie Scheffler started the event as the betting favorite , no surprise given that he also started at 10 under par, good for a two-shot advantage thanks to his status as the top-ranked player in the standings. Xander Schauffele, second in the standings, began at 8 under, while third-place Hideki Matsuyama started at 7 under. Players ranked 26-30 began the event at even par. The Tour Championship has used this staggered-start format since 2019, when the winner received $15 million.

Every player in the field who cracks the top 12 this week will earn at least $1 million. Last place pays $550,000.

Despite the staggered start, there's usually room for players to make moves at East Lake as the course traditionally yielded low scores. But this year it could play much differently thanks to a massive redesign .

TOUR Championship leaderboard without FedExCup Starting Strokes

Change Text Size

The TOUR Championship utilizes the FedExCup Starting Strokes format to reward players who’ve had the best seasons thus far. They’ve earned an advantage over their competition for the final week that decides the FedExCup.

From a betting perspective, players’ scores this week (not including the Starting Strokes) are also important. There are active betting markets for the low 72-hole score this week.

Collin Morikawa is behind top seed Scottie Scheffler in the race for the FedExCup but is one shot clear of his rival in the low 72-hole score chase.

Morikawa’s Saturday 4-under 67 moved him to 17-under for the week, one shot clear of Scheffler who moved to 16-under with another silky 66.

Sahith Theegala has moved into third place at 14-under following a 66 of his own, a score that included a self-imposed two-shot penalty for accidentally moving sand in a bunker. The young gun still has a chance to chase down the leaders on Sunday.

Veteran Australian Adam Scott is fourth at 12-under with Wyndham Clark rounding out the top five at 11-under heading to the final round.
