Guwahati in Assam and Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh both are the worth visiting cities of North –East India, and a bike trip from Guwahati and Tawang is a must-do, to add adventure to your visit to the North-East. The narrow roads, steep turns and deep gorges, as you can see in the image above will send a chill down your spine while riding through this road. Yet the scenic beauty of the panoramic view from the mountains, makes it a challenge worth taking.

The distance between both the cities is of 520 odd Kilometers, it will take you 13 – 14 hours to be covered owing to the risky terrain of the region. A ride on the roads of Assam is smooth and comparatively easy but the moment you cross the state border to enter Arunachal Pradesh, you’ll hardly find a proper road. The roads are in very bad condition and at many places you’ll find huge craters on the roads.

  • From March to October
  • Don’t ride in the dark else you won’t be able to spot huge craters on the road.

Riding on the roads surrounded by snow clad mountains of Great Himalayan ranges is such an amazing experience. Since the North-East India is the least explored region of our country, its flawless beauty is still well conserved and has the most adventurous terrains to be traced by road trips. You should ride through this pristine route at least once in your lifetime. The magnificence of this road lies in the unpredictability of terrains making your ride full of surprises and challenges.

This road used to be a part of very popular road for trade until 1962, before Sino-Indian War and was well-known with the name of Silk Route. This route is only 55 Km long and the distance can be covered within 2 hours. During a ride through this road don’t forget to stop at Tsomgo Lake also known with the name Changu Lake. Visiting this lake in winters will leave you with an astounded experience.

The condition of road is very poor. You may get stuck in the traffic for hours because of recurring landslides, snow or other road conditions.

  • The best time to visit the place is from May to October when the temperature remains a bit higher and suitable for riding as you won’t find any snow during this period. But if you want to see snow clad Nathu-La then the months of November and March are the best suited for this purpose and the route remains open for only these two months in winter. Nathula remains closed for public for 2 days of the week i.e. Monday and Tuesday.
  • If you’re going to visit in winters then first visit the stalls nearby Nathula that offer snow gears on rentals for temperature may go below -25°C.
  • Due to very high altitude at Nathula, the oxygen level in the atmosphere is quite low, so if you have any health problem or breathing problem then consult a doctor before visit.

There are a number of spots on the way worth taking photographs.

The summit of the hills is known with the name of Semmedu, a place flourishing with coffee, pepper plantations and paddy fields and offers a scenic pristine view of the valley, covered with lush green flora, from the top. Other worth visiting sites on this hill are Mini Falls, Masila Falls, Selur Nadu, botanical garden and Agaya Gangai Falls. Distance between Salem and Kolli Hills is less than 100 Km.

  • Summers are the best to visit Kolli hills.
  • Don’t ride your bike in the dark on this hill, for the hairpin turns in the hill makes the route very risky to ride at night.

This trip would leave an everlasting impression on your soul and will prove to be a biking trail that certainly gives you a high.

It is a stretch of roughly 400 Km and it takes about 6-7 hours to be covered.

  • From November to March i.e. during winters. Summers of Rajasthan are extremely hot, so not suitable for the ride.

Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar Bike Trip

All the routes I listed above are for the veteran adventure enthusiasts. I would like to reserve the last slot for the beginners who want to feel that adrenaline rush but are not in the stage to take a lengthy adventurous ride through dangerous terrains, hairpin turns, along the deep gorges and craters.

Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar bike trip is best for to begin with the bike trips because of the steady elevation of the mountain with the astonishing view on both the sides of the road with extensive flora. During the trip, you may relax at a few stopovers including Panchgani to have an eyeful of the scenic beauty of the plateau. 13. Delhi to Agra through Yamuna Expressway

Distance : 233 KM

National Highways : Taj Express Highway

A seldom mentioned long drive from the heart of the capital city to the city of the Taj, Agra is definitely one of the best road trip stretches! The Yamuna Expressway is probably the best road in the entire country, its long and wide and in perfect conditions for that hassle free driving experience, a must visit for all lovers of the road. This is an easy day trip from the capital city, where you can visit the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort and other areas and still be back to your cozy bed by the night.

The good road conditions make it easy to cover the 165 km of the route in a couple of hours. However, getting to the expressway from the city itself takes a drive of 60 km which should easily add another hour to your trip or even more. A good tip to keep in mind is to check your tire air pressure, fast driving on the road can cause too much heat that often causes tires to burst and can be dangerous. So, it is ideal to keep the tire air pressure filled at less than normal levels.

Another point to note is to pack in as much food and snacks and beverages as necessary because there are no delicious dhabas lining the expressway. There are a few small eateries that sell snacks after the toll gate, but they are not comparable to the cozy atmosphere and the filling food available in the dhabas.

The Sadras Dutch Fort, Alamparai fort ruins, Kalpakkam township, Serenity beach and Chunnambar backwaters are few low-key but yet definitely worth stopping by during your short bike journey to the French town. This is definitely the best motorcycle tour in India when it comes to the southern region.

road trip in india by bike

From self-drive motorbike adventures to tips on hiring a car and driver, here are the best road trips in India. Solovyova/Getty Images

Whether you've chartered a car and driver or hired your own motorcycle to venture out alone, rumbling across the varied roads and terrains of India is an unforgettable way to experience this sensational country.

The simple act of traveling from A to B will immerse you in the sights  and sounds of the world’s most colorful country. Though there are lots of options for traveling by bus and train , choosing a road trip gives you control over your itinerary and the freedom to stop where and when you want to explore further.

The good news is that you don’t need to brave the traffic yourself – it’s easy to hire a car or 4WD with a driver almost everywhere in India , meaning you can concentrate on the scenery while your driver deals with the sometimes challenging road conditions.

If you prefer to take the driving seat, renting a motorcycle is a wonderful way to explore the subcontinent, particularly if you stick to the backroads. Self-drive car rental is harder to arrange, but some adventurous souls travel around India with their own vehicles – a few hardy travelers have even navigated India in a modified autorickshaw!

Grab your sense of adventure and get ready to hit the road with our pick of the best road trips in India.

A magnificent red-stone fort with people walking in its gates

1. India’s Golden Triangle

Best road trip for Mughal monuments Delhi–Delhi; 1120km (696 miles); allow five days

Short and sweet, the loop from  Delhi to  Agra and  Jaipur packs a lot of wonders into a few days of driving. Your adventure begins in Delhi, where the ruins of eight cities tell the story of India’s great Islamic empires. Hit  the city's highlights , including Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb , the Jama Masjid and the bazaars of Chandni Chowk , which have changed only superficially since Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s time.

With a chartered vehicle or rented motorcycle, it’s easy to swing by the sacred cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where Krishna frolicked with milkmaids in the Hindu epics. After these peaceful stops, steel yourself for a mix of the stressful and sublime in Agra, where the glorious  Taj Mahal more than lives up to its reputation.

Find more Mughal magnificence at nearby  Fatehpur Sikri , the red sandstone city founded and later abandoned by emperor Akbar the Great. Once you follow the NH21 to Jaipur, you’ll share every fort, palace and mystical observatory with a crowd, so consider making the odd detour before you hit the Pink City’s palaces and bazaars.

Detour: Before zooming west from Fatehpur Sikri to Jaipur, consider a detour south to  Gwalior , whose beautiful fort is less mobbed than other stops on this circuit. Before you complete the third side of the triangle, tack on one more detour to spot tigers stalking ruined battlements in  Ranthambhore National Park before diving back into urban life.

2. Manali to Ladakh across the Himalaya

Best road trip for silence and serenity Manali–Srinagar; 800km (497 miles); allow ten days

Many people follow the mountain circuit from  Manali to  Ladakh and on to  Kashmir in a chartered 4WD, but we strongly recommend renting an Enfield Bullet motorcycle. This allows you the life-affirming thrill of pulling over by the roadside to find yourself alone in the silence of the high-altitude Himalayan deserts.

From the hippie hill resort of Manali, it’s a two-day slog over the 3978m (13,051ft)  Rohtang La to  Leh , through a landscape plucked straight from the heyday of the Silk Road. There’s little vegetation and even less shade, and the cold and altitude will hit you like a sledgehammer. Recuperate with trips to Buddhist monasteries and yoga classes in Leh, then hit the road again for a different take on the Himalayas in Kashmir.

The highway west to  Srinagar weaves between ancient villages, but as the hills turn from dust-yellow to lush green, the culture shifts from Buddhism to Islam before the minarets of Srinagar loom into view. The Kashmir valley is sometimes troubled, but when it’s calm, the experience of watching  Dal Lake appearing slowly through the morning mist from the deck of a houseboat is simply sublime.

Planning tip: Whether you drive yourself or let someone else take the wheel, it's imperative to respect the mountain climate. Snow closes the high passes into Ladakh in winter, and road travel is usually only possible from June to late September or early October.

A camel draws a cart on a road through a desert landscape

3. Rajasthan’s colored cities

Best road trip for desert colors Jaipur–Jaipur; 1630km (1012 miles); allow ten days

Desert driving in  Rajasthan is an incredible experience. Mighty fortresses loom dramatically out of the landscape, and you’ll share the dusty highways with camel carts and old-timers, some with vividly colored turbans and handsome mustaches. Kick-off in  Jaipur – the pink city – touring pink-sandstone palaces, bustling bazaars and the awe-inspiring fortress at  Amber .

Follow NH48 to the Jain and Muslim pilgrimage center of Ajmer, and duck west to reach the famous  Pushkar , with its temple-circled lake and legendary camel fair in October or November. Return to the NH48 for the rumbling ride to  Udaipur , the white city – draped like a silk scarf on the shores of tranquil Lake Pichola. Dose up on ice-white palaces, then deviate west to the temple-strewn hill station of Mt Abu.

Veering north to  Jodhpur , you’ll immediately spot the lapis-colored buildings that earned the Blue City its name. Get another blast of military might at  Mehrangarh Fort , then drive west through serious desert country to the sand-yellow city of  Jaisalmer , whose fortified walls look almost carved from the desert itself. Close off the loop via  Bikaner , where you’ll leave the tourist crowds behind before diving back into the thick of things in Jaipur.

Detour: Having your own transport opens up the opportunity to get off the tourist track in this heavily visited state. Consider tacking on a side-trip north from Jaipur to Shekhawati, famed for its mural-filled haveli mansions.

Monkey or Hanuman temple at sunrise in Hampi, Karnataka, India

4. Hampi and the Hoysalas

Best road trip for temples Mysuru–Gokarna; 1060km (659 miles); allow ten days

For many travelers, visiting the time-tumbled ruins of the Vijayanagar kingdom at  Hampi is the most memorable experience during a trip to India. Start off in  Mysuru (formerly Mysore), with its mesmerizing markets, fiery cuisine and famously extravagant  palace . Rumble north on the backroads to fascinating Sravanabelagola with its naked 17m (56ft) statue of  Gomateshvara , the first tirthankara  (spiritual teacher) of the Jain religion.

The temples just keep on coming in Karnataka. Slingshot through Hassan to Belur and Halebid, where the  temples of the Hoysala Empire represent perhaps the zenith of the Hindu temple-building art. A three-hour drive east will drop you in Karnataka’s capital,  Bengaluru , known for its cosmopolitan dining, shopping and nightlife. Enjoy its comforts; it’s a long drive to reach Hosapete, the leaping-off point for the ruins at Hampi.

Once you roll into Hampi’s centuries-old bazaar, allow at least two days to explore toppled temples and time travel across centuries in a landscape of stacked granite boulders. For more timeless temple architecture, duck onto the backroads to reach Badami, where blood-colored cliffs are pock-marked with  cave temples .

Detour: To mix things up, consider taking a side trip to Aihole, dotted with dusty ruins from the ancient Chalukya kingdom, then finish on the beach with some well-earned R&R in  Gokarna  – part pilgrim-town, part beach retreat.

5. Kolkata to Darjeeling

Best road trip for Himalayan views and side treks Kolkata–Yuksom; 808km (502 miles); allow eight days

The east of India is often overlooked by the crowds who surge north from Delhi, but the journey through West Bengal to the foothills of 8586m (28,169ft) Mt Khangchendzonga has an epic sense of mission. Start in crowded but cultured  Kolkata , visiting ashrams, temples and striking civic buildings reclaimed from British colonialism. Fit in a tour of the tiger-stalked swamps of the  Sunderbans before you head for the hills.

The journey north takes you past little-visited country towns to intriguing Shantiniketan, a university town with a long history of dance, theater and poetry. From here, you’ll break north to reach the emerald-green tea estates and delightfully dated grand hotels of  Darjeeling , where you’ll likely catch your first up-close views of the Himalayas.

To get intimate with the snow peaks, walk the Singalila Ridge trekking route or edge even closer to Mt Khangchendzonga by picking up a permit to enter lofty  Sikkim . A route through Kalimpong,  Gangtok and Pelling will reveal views that would make mountaineers itch for their ice axes. To cap it all off, you can get within touching distance of the snow on the trek to the Goecha La from Yuksom.

Planning tip: You’ll need a Restricted Areas Permit to enter Sikkim, but this is easily obtained in Kolkata, Siliguri or Darjeeling, or when crossing into Sikkim at Melli or Rangpo.

Exterior of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, formerly known as the Victoria Terminus in Mumbai, India

6. Mumbai to Goa

Best road trip for beaches Mumbai–Palolem; 650km (404 miles); allow one week

Short journeys don’t mean scrimping on excitement in India. From brash and brilliant  Mumbai , set out on NH66 and head south, detouring down to the coast to explore fascinating forts such as  Murud-Janjira , a legacy of centuries of coastal conquest. Pull into the low-key seaside resorts at Ganpatipule and Malvan before you hit the busy beaches of  Goa .

As you roll into northern Goa, swing by the famous market in Anjuna and the fun-filled beach hubs at Baga and Calangute. Head onward to  Panaji , Goa’s charming Portuguese-colonial capital, and the timeworn basilicas of Old Goa.

The mood changes as you roll south to laid-back  Agonda , the center of Goa’s nascent surfing scene. It changes again as you head inland through green hills dotted with spice farms for a peek at thundering  Dudhsagar Falls , India’s second-highest cascade. Finish up on the sand-sprinkled shore at lovely  Palolem (making time for a bird-spotting hike at the nearby  Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary ).

7. A drive through the northeast

Best road trip for tribal encounters Guwahati–Guwahati; 1700km (1056 miles); allow two weeks

With a hired 4WD and a driver who can speak local languages, a fascinating journey through the varied cultures of the northeast states awaits. Start in  Guwahati , the under-explored capital of Assam, and follow the mighty Brahmaputra River northeast to  Kaziranga National Park for close encounters with one-horned Indian rhinos.

Next, aim your sights north towards  Arunachal Pradesh and the awesome  Buddhist monasteries of the Tawang Valley (local travel agencies can arrange a permit).

Add on a wander through the tribal communities of Ziro and Daporijo, and loop back through Upper Assam, continuing east to the fascinating Konyak Naga villages around Mon in northern  Nagaland . Slip back to the plains via Kohima (ideally in December to catch the Hornbill Festival), then climb up onto the high plateau of  Meghalaya , where trees are woven into living bridges and markets sell bows and arrows as day-to-day essentials, before barrelling downhill from  Shillong to Guwahati.

Planning tip: A Protected Area Permit is required to enter Arunachal Pradesh, and you may need to be in a group of two or more to visit some areas. Contact travel agencies in Guwahati in advance to get the paperwork in place.

A road runs through lush green tea plantations

8. Around the tip of India

Best road trip in the south Kochi–Kochi; 807km (501 miles); allow 7 days

The bottom end of India feels like a different country. Start the journey through India’s steamy south in historic  Kochi , whose ancient streets tell a timeless tale of seafaring, trade and Keralan spices. As you roam south to  Alappuzha , park up for a day or two to explore the fascinating, waterlogged backwaters by boat.

As you pass through Amrithapuri, you can pause for a hug from a living guru before soaking up some rays on  Kerala ’s loveliest beaches at  Varkala . Next, whoosh through  Thiruvananthapuram (pause just long enough for some incendiary Keralan curries) to the southern tip of India. From here, you’ll head inland, through drier, rockier Tamil Nadu, to reach  Madurai , whose temple towers are encrusted with brightly colored deities and demons.

The trip back to Kochi will take you through the Palani Hills, a side spur of the Western Ghats, where the landscape surges upwards to  Kodaikanal , perhaps the most charming of India’s southern hill stations. Grab a cuppa amidst swirling tea estates in  Munnar , South India’s top tea-growing center, before you return to the coast.

Planning tip: The monsoon obscures the views from the Western Ghats from June to September, but waterfalls run at full force, so this is still a rewarding time to come.

9. Chennai to Puducherry

Best road trip for cultural variety Chennai–Puducherry; 232km (144 miles); allow 3 to 4 days

For a short, sweet and spicy trip along India’s southeast coast, consider the three-day trip from  Chennai south to  Puducherry (Pondicherry) . Start in Chennai, with its vast beach, famous-name ashrams and  delicious cuisine , then track south along the coast, wedged between the sea and the salt lake.

Stop one is the surprising surf resort at Kovalam, a worthy stop en route to  Mamallapuram  (Mahabalipuram), where you can view a riot of carvings and temples created by the Pallava dynasty. Duck inland to see the ancient Pallava capital at Kanchipuram, then return to the coast to close out the trip at charming Puducherry – a town best experienced in heritage hotels in the old French Quarter.

Top tips for hiring a car and driver in India

You’ll find drivers-for-hire offering their services at taxi and 4WD stands all over India, or you can make arrangements through hotels and travel agencies. Check that the driver speaks enough English to understand where you want to go and where you want to stop, and confirm that the driver is able to cross state lines – some vehicles are only licensed to operate in certain areas.

You’ll need to agree on a price for the trip before you start, and the cost should include fuel, accommodation and food for the driver for multi-day trips. Prices start at around US$40 per day, rising for 4WD vehicles. Be clear with your driver about what you want from your journey; if you want to avoid stops at tourist shops and commission-paying venues, make this clear from the outset.

Exploring India by motorcycle or bike is for experienced riders

India’s roads are not for fair-weather motorcyclists, but if you have a few miles under your belt and fancy a challenge, it’s a fabulous way to explore this enormous country. Veteran hire companies such as  Lalli Singh Tours in Delhi have sent hundreds of travelers off on journeys across India, from the steamy southern jungles to the high passes of the Himalayas.

The best advice we can give is to ride slowly and defensively, always give way to larger vehicles, and carry a full repair kit and spares – and know how to use them! The nostalgic British-designed Enfield Bullet is the vehicle of choice for many travelers, but it’s a heavy brute; newer machines from the likes of Bajaj are lighter and easier to handle.

If you plan to pedal your way around India by bicycle, carry plenty of puncture repair kits and bring lights and high visibility gear. If you don’t want to transport your own bike into the country, consider flying into Delhi and buying a bike at the Jhandewalan Cycle Market.

6 Top India Motorcycle Tour Destinations and Tours

High Altitude Mountains, Beaches and Desert

road trip in india by bike

Not surprisingly, motorcycle tours in India are growing in popularity, as the country's vast and varied terrain holds great appeal to motorcycle enthusiasts. Initially, most motorcycle tours were lead by foreign organizers. However, in recent years, numerous Indian companies have formed and started running these tours as well. Local knowledge, coupled with innovative routes and reasonable rates, make these tours excellent options. Discover six of the best destinations and tours in this article.

If you have your own motorcycle, a trip along Maharashtra's Konkan Coast from Mumbai to Tarkarli (or beyond to Goa) is also popular.

Delhi-Chandigarh-Manali-Leh

Northern India, especially around the Ladakh region , is undoubtedly the most popular destination for motorcycle tours in India. The route there, to what feels like the top of the world, will take you through dramatic changes in scenery -- starting out from hectic Delhi , to planned city Chandigarh, followed by the lush mountains around Manali , then ascending up the barren landscape to Leh. Many people choose just to do the Manali-Leh stretch. However, one company that will take you all the way is Mumbai-based Ride of My Life.

Ride of My Life offers a range of eight to 13 day premium and luxury tours , for both Indians and foreigners, to Leh and beyond (the Nubra Valley, and Pangong Tso including Chang La, the world's second highest motorable pass at 17,800 feet). The tours operate from June to August, and are conduced using 500cc Royal Enfield motorcycles in mint condition. The two owners are passionate motorcyclists who have also founded a non-profit organization to encourage more people to take up motorcycle travel, and made award-winning documentaries about their motorcycle journeys to remote parts of India.

North East India

North East India , with its meandering roads (many of which are in challenging condition) and its abundant natural beauty, provides an appealing landscape for motorcycle tours. Numerous companies offer motorcycle tours throughout the North East region. However, the personal attention provided by Anuj Singh and Shahwar Hussain of Chain Reaction has become quite renowned. This duo are a photographer, and an automotive journalist and travel writer. They've been riding together as a team, doing adventure motorcycle travel stories, for many years.

Chain Reaction has 17 and 21 day tours that will take you through Kazaranga National Park , the tea estates of Assam , Arunachal Pradesh and Tawang Monastery , tribal Nagaland , and misty Meghalaya to the remarkable root bridges of Cherrapunji.

India's desert state of Rajasthan , full of old forts and palaces, always holds special appeal for tourists. You'll share rustic roads with camel and buffalo carts as you make your way through colorful villages and explore regal cities.

Aboriginal Motorcycle Adventures Tours offers a 22 day Jumbo Rajasthan Tour, which starts from Delhi and does a loop through top destinations including Jaipur , Mandawa , Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur , Udaipur , Bundi, and Ranthambore National Park . A stop at Agra to see the Taj Mahal is also part of the tour. If you don't want to spend so long on a motorbike, shorter 14 day Rajasthan tours are also available. The Indian husband and wife team that owns and operates Aboriginal Motorcycle Adventures Tours are avid adventure travelers. Atul Bhardwaj gave up retail business ownership to pursue his passion for motorcycle touring, and aims to provide honest, value for money tours, which he leads himself.

Are you a woman who loves to ride? Indian Rides offers this 16-day women-only guided motorcycle group tour through Rajasthan.

Tropical, laid back Kerala , will delight you with a combination of beaches and backwaters, spice estates, and scenic hill stations. The pace of life there is slow and unchanged for decades -- people still make their own spices and catch their own fish.

Royal Bike Riders offers a 13 day Golden Beaches and Spices motorcycle tour through parts of Kerala and neighboring Tamil Nadu. The company is a young and dedicated Delhi-based team who aim to make motorcycle touring fun. What stands out is their flexibility -- they offer both fixed departure and customized trips. The team puts a lot of effort into designing itineraries and selecting routes that are still relatively unexplored, yet offer an exciting blend of adventure, culture, and attractive accommodations. Go on their Kerala tour and you'll even be able to take a motorbike ride along the beach!

Also check out the epic 1,400 kilometer Spice Route Tour by Indian Rides. It goes down the Kerala coast from Kochi to Alleppey, then inland all the way up to Pondicherry and Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Coast

If you love the coast, you shouldn't miss cruising along the picturesque and smooth East Coast Road, from Chennai to Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu . It invitingly hugs the seashore. Chennai-based Date a Bike offers an easy overnight private trip . It's possible to rent luxury bikes, including Harley Davidsons, from them.

The Royal Riders offers a 13 Day South India Tour that starts in Pondicherry and takes the coastal route down to Kanyakumari (the most southern tip of India) and up the coast to Varkala in Kerala before heading back inland. You can choose from various shorter three and six day tours in Tamil Nadu as well. The team consists of a group of eclectic guys, including two from France and one from Spain, who all live in Pondicherry. Their trips don't follow the tourist trail, but rather their favorite routes discovered throughout years of riding adventures.

Rann of Kutch, Gujarat

Claude Renault/Getty Images

Want to get off the well-beaten tourist trail? The spectacular barren rural countryside of Gujarat's Kutch region is often referred to as India's "Wild West." Much of it consists of sprawling seasonal wetlands, incorporating the haunting white salt desert of the Great Rann of Kutch and smaller Little Rann of Kutch (famous for its Wild Ass Sanctuary ).

The Dream Riders, based in Ahmedabad, have come up with a Rann of Kutch Ride with premium and deluxe options and lengths of four or six days. There are frequent departures from November to January, and the ride is quite easy. The company has been in business organizing adventurous guided motorbike tours across India since 2009.

So are you planning to buy one such bike and disappear on the roads? we feel you! But please take the following things with you for a safe trip: Bike documents and driving license, a good helmet with proper riding gears, backpacks with all the ropes and knots, some snacks, a small bike repair kit, fluorescent tapes, flashlights, and most importantly insurance . And yes! Do not forget to get these things checked before starting the journey: Tires, Fuel, Wheel Alignment, Brakes, Chain/Belt, and Engine.

Why insurance is the most important thing to have before any bike trip:

Long drives can be fun but not without an insurance policy. Make sure you buy or renew your bike insurance policy before you start your journey. The bike insurance policy will save you from accidents, theft, fire, natural disasters, personal accidents, and third-party losses.

Other than this, a bike insurance policy can be useful in a bike trip because:

  • Roadside Assistance: Long trips may call for some unexpected challenges like bike breakdown. You cannot trust all motor garages to get your bike fixed as they may mislead you with the issues. Better is having insurance because then you can have assistance arranged by the insurer. They will make arrangements or guide you for a hassle-free repair.
  • Cashless Repair Facility: Only if you have insurance, you can get the benefit of the cashless repair at the network garages. You might not want to spend extravagantly when on a long trip. Hence, the cashless facility will be a benefit for you.
  • Quick claim process: When you have an online two-wheeler insurance policy, you can easily file the claim through your mobile phone. You can be on your trip, get the bike repaired, and still file a claim. And the claim process is completely online and super quick. It is paperless and some insurance companies say that their claim process takes a few minutes! Super Simple!

Gone are the days when you have go to the insurance office or talk to an agent to buy a bike insurance. These days buying insurance online is safer and better because it:

  • Will help you save time to purchase the policy. All the terms and conditions can be read online.
  • Allows you to choose the cover and add-on cover without bias.
  • Help you save premium because there are no middlemen involved when you buy the policy online.
  • Makes Quick policy receiving possible as soon as you deposit the premium.
  • Aids you compare the quotes online before making the final purchase of the policy.

The Ultimate First-Timer’s Guide to a Leh-Ladakh Bike Trip

Picture of Mark Ching

Leh-Ladakh is a land of unparalleled beauty, where towering mountains meet pristine lakes and vast desert landscapes.

Nestled in the northernmost part of India, this region offers an extraordinary blend of adventure, serenity, and cultural richness. From snow-capped peaks to ancient monasteries, Ladakh feels like a world apart, captivating travelers with its rugged charm.

Whether you’re drawn by its natural wonders or the thrill of high-altitude trekking and biking, a trip to Leh-Ladakh promises an unforgettable experience. The region’s peaceful isolation and dramatic landscapes make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking adventure, reflection, or simply a break from the ordinary.

Chapter Trail

How to reach leh-ladakh.

road to leh

Let’s start with the basics—how to get to Leh-Ladakh. There are a few different options depending on your preference for travel.

  • By Air: The easiest way to reach Leh is by flight. Leh’s Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is one of the highest commercial airports in the world and is about 4 km from the city center. Flights from major cities like Delhi operate year-round, making this a convenient choice. Fares from Delhi to Leh generally start around ₹10,000.
  • By Road: If you crave adventure, the road trip to Ladakh is an unforgettable journey. There are two main routes—one from Manali and the other from Srinagar. The Manali-Leh highway, open from June to October, offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas. The Srinagar-Leh route, also open in summer, is equally scenic, passing through lush valleys and high-altitude passes.
  • By Train: Unfortunately, Ladakh does not have its own railway station. The nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi, about 700 km away. From there, you can hire a taxi or board a bus to reach Ladakh.
  • By Bike: For true adventurers, a Leh-Ladakh bike trip through winding roads is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Popular with biking enthusiasts, the Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways are the main routes. Be sure to prepare well, as these roads can be challenging but incredibly rewarding.

Ladakh’s Geography

leh ladakh geography

Ladakh is India’s highest plateau region, located within the Himalayas. Its landscape is unlike any other in the country, often described as a cold desert.

The altitude of Ladakh ranges from 3,000 meters to 8,000 meters above sea level.   This region is home to some of the world’s highest mountain passes, such as Khardung La (18,000 ft) and Chang La (17,400 ft), as well as the mesmerizing Pangong Lake (13,800 ft).

The capital city, Leh, sits at 11,400 ft, while the famous Hunder Sand Dunes, located in the Nubra Valley, are at 10,300 ft. Ladakh’s high altitude and rugged terrain make it a haven for adventure seekers.

A Glimpse into Ladakh’s History

leh people

Ladakh’s history is as rich and fascinating as its landscape. The region was originally ruled by the Gon dynasty, with its first king being Skyid Lde Nyima Gon. After the collapse of the Tibetan Empire in the mid-1800s, Ladakh became part of the larger region influenced by Tibetan culture.

In 2019, Ladakh was designated as a union territory, separating it from Jammu and Kashmir . Today, Ladakh stands as India’s largest union territory, with a unique blend of Buddhist and Tibetan heritage.

Best Time to Visit Leh-Ladakh

leh ladakh shadow mountain

Though flights operate year-round, the best time to visit Ladakh is during the summer months, from May to September. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and most of the roads and passes are open, making it ideal for sightseeing, trekking, and biking. Ladakh is covered in snow for much of the year, so visiting outside of summer may limit your access to many attractions.

Ladakh’s Location and Map

leh ladakh plain

Ladakh is located in the northernmost part of India, bordered by Pakistan to the west, China to the north and east, and Jammu & Kashmir to the south. It is divided into two primary districts: Leh and Kargil. Leh, the most popular district, is home to the capital city and most of Ladakh’s famous attractions. Kargil, known for its historical significance, is the second district.

Transportation in Ladakh

The Ultimate First-Timer’s Guide to a Leh-Ladakh Bike Trip

Once you’ve arrived in Ladakh, exploring the region is an adventure in itself. The rugged terrain offers a mix of transportation options:

  • By Bus: There are regular bus services that connect Leh with other parts of Ladakh, including Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and Tso Moriri. This is a more budget-friendly option, though less flexible than traveling by car or bike.
  • Taxis: Private taxis are readily available in Leh, offering a comfortable way to explore the region’s remote areas. While more expensive than buses, taxis provide flexibility and ease.

All India Road Trip in bike for 78 days covering 22557 kms

Photo of tnpdiary

I am Siddharth. K " passionate long rider with molecular riding experience of 3 lakh+ kilometers, Infant larcener of Shadows (Photographer), relinquished my job for this dream" living in one of the Major cities of India- Chennai, TN.

This all India trip was a long term dream which sparkled between us. Us - oh yeah! I should say about this person. He is my pillion Rider, my friend, my support - emotionally and physically throughout the trip. I know him for past 6 years from Post Graduation. He is a wonderful person with identical kind of perspective, idea & dream like I had.

His name is Mr. Rajesh. S from Coimbatore and he is a Dreamer & Believer . We started our exploration together from 2014 and have traveled to most parts of South India covering Kerala, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Goa and some parts of Andhrapradesh.

The last trip before this all India trip was from Chennai - Hampi - Goa - Dudhsagar Waterfalls Exploration - Mangalore - Bangalore and back to Chennai riding almost 2100 kms as New Year Special.

Idea of Traveling All India

It was a sunny evening, we were exploring the roads across the Kochi- Kerala. The roads, beach views, greenness greeted us with pleasure and suddenly we put through the wringer for us - "Why shouldn't we explore full India instead of covering part by part?"

That question sparked! A causal quest between us, developed to extreme eagerness of challenging the question to Dream of traveling all India. Beyond any doubt, the true strength of Belief in accomplishing the dream made us to achieve them.

Our Authentic Companion

Our travel companion is Pulsar 220F - about 4 years old now. It's a 220cc sporty bike acquired only for long rides.

Photo of All India Road Trip in bike for 78 days covering 22557 kms 1/3 by tnpdiary

Course of action

And finally we drafted for about 3 months spending all the weekends in course of action for the All India Trip and we perfected the entire plan 2 months prior to the travel date. We tried to reaching out for sponsorship for this achievement by approaching the leading manufacturers like Bajaj, Shell, MRF, Indian Oil and so on. But no one was in a position to encourage us in making this achievement. Instead everyone doubted our capabilities which gave us a negative thoughts of attaining this trip.. "thinking whether it would be so challenging to complete as the companies are rejecting us"

But, soon after we realized to change the negative vibes to Positive one of executing this trip with our own efforts in terms of every support. When I verge upon my parents, it was so hard to convince them but after making them realize of our dream, plan and safe travel we got the major support from them.

We also reached out many magazines and newspaper editors through mail, calls and none supported us. We outlined to take a Safe Travel insisting an idea of safety and so we named this trip as "ALL INDIA TRIP FOR ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS"

Meanwhile, my bike have already reached 80000 kms by our previous trips and when I beared my bike to the Bajaj Authorized Service Centre, they gave me a shocking news that "my bike engine was entirely worn-out so I have to replace the entire engine spares which would cost about Rs. 25000 and even after absolute replacement, there is no certainty that the bike would take the trip fully", worried me of taking this trip.

I doubted their statement of engine problem and reviewed with many other Authorized Service Centres in Chennai but everyone said the same. Being much worried, accidentally I got to meet a service technician Mr. Gopi near Aminjikarai, Chennai when I went leave my friend's Royal Enfield for service. Mr. Gopi and his brother Mr. Rahmad surveyed my bike and gave a hope that the bike is in good condition where there is no need for replacing engine spares.

Preferring his advice, I gave my bike to him for rectification at his service station - FRIENDS AUTOWORKS and he just changed the Clutch Plates, Timings Chains, Tap- Head Barrings. Also, he renovated by making Chain Adjustments, Carburetor Cleaning, Cone-set adjustments, replaced & services oil seals for shock observers and brake fine tuning.

When I was with him in this service station - FRIENDS AUTOWORKS , I came to know about the GPS device which can be placed in the vehicle for tracking and immobilizing remotely through a mobile phone application in case of thefts and other such situation. Since, I assured my parents and friends for the safe travel we installed the GPS device in my bike and the service provider "KINGSTRACK GPS" provided us a online portal through which my bike position and running can be tracked remotely via PC's. This online portal gave my parents and friends an additional hope of safe travel.

Accompanying the service, we ordered Safety items such as Rider Jackets, Gloves, Knee Pads, Elbow Safety pad and we also went to Decathlon for buying Tents, Hand Gloves for Cold Climates, Rain Coats and Bag safety covers and so on. Meanwhile I went for some other essentials purchases like 52 ltrs Travel Bag, Track Pants, 3/4 Pants from Adidas.

Coming to the Bike spares to take along with travel, I ordered the "BOLT Bike Charger" online, purchased 8 liters of Engine Oil - Shell 10w-40 Full Synthetic Variant, Tubeless Puncher Kit, 14" Spanner for opening the oil flush bolt, Leg Air Pump, Tyre-pressure Gauge digital, Insulation Tapes, Spark Plugs, Disc Oils, etc.,

At last, their comes the carrier for the bike to take all the things with us. A day before, I went to carrier making place where I had to make the person make a new carrier for my bike and all was set at 1600 the previous day of the trip.

Ready to Trip

The bike was too good to start the trip after some replacements and rectifications but the bike engine was untouched, it was the same manufactures Engine- nothing has been changed. Mr. Gopi - Service technician have played an excellent job and bike was ready for the trip with all the accessories, carrier and other stuffs stuffed packed and ready to go.

When we started, our odometer was 84749 kms and since we have planned where to travel, we decided to stick on to the plan.
