Star Trek: Picard

Star Trek: Picard is the eighth main series set in the Star Trek universe, the ninth including the companion series Star Trek: Short Treks , and the eleventh Star Trek series overall. Picard is produced by CBS Studios and stars Patrick Stewart , reprising the role of Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation . [1] The new series is set twenty years after the events of Star Trek Nemesis , [2] dealing with "the new chapter in Picard's life."

The series forms part of Alex Kurtzman 's five-year deal with CBS to expand the Star Trek franchise . The first season debuted on CBS All Access , which subsequently became Paramount+ . [3] Kurtzman serves as executive producer on the series along with Stewart, as well as James Duff , Akiva Goldsman , Michael Chabon , Trevor Roth , Heather Kadin , and Rod Roddenberry . In addition, Aaron Baiers serves as co-executive producer. [4] Writer Kirsten Beyer devised the concept for the series, [5] and she features as part of the writing staff alongside Kurtzman, Duff, Goldsman, and Chabon. Chabon served as the first season's showrunner. [6]

Production history

The series was announced at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention on 4 August 2018 , where Stewart appeared alongside Kurtzman to reveal his involvement. At the time of the announcement, the series was still early in pre-production, with no scripts written yet. [7] According to the actor, the possibility of Picard's return had been suggested to him about a year before, but he originally planned to reject the idea. However, upon revisiting episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and realizing the power and influence of the series, he changed his mind. [8] On making the announcement, Stewart referred to the news as "unexpected, but delightful". [9]

It was reported that, on the day before the announcement, CBS applied for a number of trademarks in classes relating to entertainment, which could be connected with the new series. Marks applied for included " Star Trek: Reliant ", and " Star Trek: Destiny ", a title that shares its name with a post-TNG Star Trek novel trilogy . [10]

Work in the writers' room began in September 2018 , and an image of the staff with Stewart was shared by the actor at the end of that month. [11] This image featured Stewart, Duff, Goldsman, Beyer, Chabon and also Diandra Pendleton-Thompson , who had not been previously announced as one of the series' writers. Production was expected to begin in April 2019 , according to Kurtzman, [12] and the series is filmed in California. [13] In December 2018, CBS Corporation Chief Creative Officer David Nevins stated that CBS expected the series to launch late in 2019. [14]

In January 2019 , Kurtzman announced that the series would acknowledge the prime universe elements of Star Trek , stating that " Picard's life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire . " [15]

On 1 March 2019 , it was announced that Hanelle M. Culpepper would be directing the first two episodes of the series. [16] This marks the first time that a black woman was directing the series premiere of a Star Trek series.

On 4 March 2019 , the first two series regulars besides Stewart were announced, Santiago Cabrera and Michelle Hurd . [17] Later in March, Evan Evagora was added to the cast as a series regular. [18]

On 17 April 2019 , it was announced that Alison Pill , Harry Treadaway , and Isa Briones were joining the cast. [19]

On 22 April 2019 , production on the show began. [20] The Star Trek: Picard production is based out of Santa Clarita Studios (SCS). SCS is an independent studio production facility based in Santa Clarita, California, 35 miles north of Hollywood. Although Star Trek was returning to Hollywood, like all of the previous series save Star Trek: Discovery , it is not being shot at Star Trek 's previous home of Paramount Studios. [21] Paramount lost not only its television division, but the entire franchise as well, when the former Viacom was split in late 2005 into the new Viacom (Paramount's holding company at the time Picard began filming) and the CBS Corporation , with Star Trek ownership passing over to the latter. (The two corporations re-merged to form ViacomCBS in December 2019; ViacomCBS was rebranded as Paramount Global in February 2022.)

Shortly before filming began, Michael Chabon was appointed as showrunner. [22] However, CBS did not announce Chabon's position until 27 June 2019 . [23]

On 13 May 2019 , the announcement was made that Amazon Prime had acquired the international streaming rights for the new series, each episode to be aired 24 hours after its American premiere on CBS All Access . [24] [25] Stewart confirmed the news the same day on his Twitter account. [26]

On 15 May 2019 , the first seven-second teaser, revealing the new show's title and logo, was released. [27] This was followed on 23 May by the first live-action teaser trailer in both the CBS All Access and Amazon Prime Video variants. [28] [29] The voice of the teaser trailer's female narrator was not from any of the then-known contracted actresses, but rather from voice actress Merrin Dungey . [30] It was after the series had premiered, that it became apparent that Dungey was also given the guest-starring part of Richter .

On 20 July 2019 the first official Season 1 trailer , coming in at 130 seconds, was unveiled at the 2019 San Diego Comic Con. The trailer featured footage of former Next Generation co-star Brent Spiner , and Star Trek: Voyager star Jeri Ryan reprising her role as Seven of Nine . It was also announced that Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis would each be reprising their roles as William T. Riker and Deanna Troi , respectively.

Robert Picardo revealed on 29 July 2019 that he has been approached about a possible appearance in a second season of the show. [31]

On 31 August 2019 , Michael Chabon posted on Instagram that filming for the first season had been completed. [32]

On 17 September 2019 , Patrick Stewart told The Huddersfield Daily Examiner in his native Yorkshire that " there is ... the possibility of a second Picard series filming in March next year. " [33]

On 5 October 2019 , a second trailer debuted at New York Comic-Con, and it was announced that the first season would air on CBS All Access beginning on 23 January 2020 .

On 7 October 2019 , Kurtzman confirmed that a second season of Picard was "already in the works". [34]

An interview released on 29 November 2019 mentioned Ayelet Waldman as a member of the writing staff for Picard . [35]

On 10 December 2019 , it was announced that Michael Chabon would step down from his role as showrunner, but would remain involved in the show. [36]

On 20 December 2019 , a third teaser trailer debuted almost exactly one month ahead of the CBS All Access series premier online. The teaser revealed new pieces of footage with Jean-Luc Picard in what appears to be Ten Forward , the bar on the USS Enterprise -D , among other quick new moments with William T. Riker , Dr. Agnes Jurati, and what appears to be a Borg flashback. [37]

The renewal of Star Trek: Picard for a second season was informally revealed on 16 December 2019 , and formally announced on 12 January 2020 . [38] [39] The same day, it was announced that Terry Matalas had joined the staff of Picard , and was likely to take over as showrunner from Chabon. [40] Also joining the writing team was Marc Bernardin .

The series premiered in North America on 23 January 2020 on CBS All Access with its first episode " Remembrance ", with the rest of the world following suit the next day through Amazon Prime Video.

In August 2020 , Alex Kurtzman said that the Picard writers' room had continued to meet via Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic. [41]

Opening credits

The opening title sequence for Star Trek: Picard was meant to connect viewers to Picard's journey in a way that was "more intimate" and "more emotional", containing imagery of Château Picard , a Borg cube , chips and pieces that would culminate into Picard himself. [42]

Development

Picard lead Patrick Stewart initially had no intention whatsoever to reprise his role, feeling that the role had run its course, but decided to accept the invitation for a talk with the producers, as he felt it was only courteous to explain his reasons for declining the part in person. However, during the meeting and its follow-ups, Producer Michael Chabon was able to change Stewart's mind as he was fully willing to take Stewart's vision of an older Picard into account. In the process, Chabon entirely discarded the original story treatment he had written for the opening episode, and started a new, heeding Stewart's concerns. ( TRR : " Remembrance ") Stewart himself has confirmed this (including his initial disinclination to take on the role again) during his appearance on the British talk show The Graham Norton Show (Season 26, Episode 16, 17 January 2020), shortly before the series premiered. [47]

Marina Sirtis appeared with the same wig and contact lenses that she wore in Star Trek Nemesis . She held on to them after that production finished, and informed Picard producers of this, likely saving them time and the US$10,000 it would have cost to make a new wig. [48]

In the months leading up to the premiere of the new series, a monthly prequel three-volume comic book mini-series, Star Trek: Picard - Countdown , was released by IDW Publishing , starting in November 2019. The comic book series introduced several characters, later featured in the live-action production, as well as dealing with events that led up to the ones featured on the show.

Additionally, the Star Trek: Picard Movie & TV Collection Blu-ray Disc set (which incidentally, included the exclusive sixteen-page Star Trek: Sky's the Limit comic book, likewise from IDW [49] ) saw an October/November release as an appetizer. [50] The majority of the titles included in the collection contained events referenced to in the series, which held especially true for TNG : " The Best of Both Worlds ", Star Trek: First Contact , and Star Trek Nemesis .

Picardilly Circus

The London, UK, "Picardilly Circus" subway station

Aside for Patrick Stewart's own remarks on the new show, it was also revealed in the above-mentioned The Graham Norton Show episode, that the London Underground station Piccadilly Circus was temporarily dubbed "Pica r dilly Circus" in anticipation of the new series, whereas Stewart himself had related how he came across a New York City subway line map into which an imaginary subway line was incorporated, outlining the Starfleet arrowhead logo. [51] Both of these occasions had been part of the official franchise overall marketing strategy. London public transportation Head of Customer Information, Design and Partnerships at Transport for London, Julie Dixon, clarified, " We're thrilled to partner with Amazon Prime Video to create this exciting takeover of one of London's most well-known Underground stations to celebrate the launch of Star Trek: Picard . The Star Trek franchise is a global sensation and we're excited to mark this next chapter in a creative and engaging way that connects with tens of thousands of people. We hope that the out of this world activity has brought a bit of unexpected fun to our customers and that they boldly go on their commute, young or old. " [52] The New York City MTA metro company Stewart had come across, additionally dispensed Star Trek: Picard -themed cards/tickets at six pre-selected metro stations, aside from displaying the series billboards and having adjusted its subway line map where the six stations were linked to form the Starfleet arrowhead. [53] [54]

Season 1 first poster

In its first season, Star Trek: Picard was nominated for five Emmy Awards , all in "technical" categories such as makeup and sound editing. It won one, "Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Limited Series, Movie or Special".

FanSets debuted its first Star Trek: Picard pins in 2019.

CherryTree previewed a prototype of its Borg Cube ATX Limited Collector's Edition computer in July 2019 , [55] and the final version reached retail in January 2020 . [56] Smaller ITX builds of this cube debuted in June 2020 . In 2021, the company displayed a prototype for its forthcoming computerized Star Trek: Picard Borg Cube Record Player . [57]

In June 2019 , Eaglemoss/Hero Collector 's project manager Ben Robinson reconfirmed that the company would manufacture starship miniatures from the series, and later indicated that they would be about 150 to 250 mm in length, similar to ships from its DIS starships partwork . The first four sets of CG starship assets were received from the production in March 2020 , and the first products, models of La Sirena , the USS Zheng He , Fenris Ranger vessel , and the Romulan Bird-of-Prey were scheduled. [58] In October 2020 , the company announced that its forthcoming PIC starship line would be combined with ships from Star Trek: Discovery (after the release of issue 33 of the DIS collection) and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds into a new partwork , which was subsequently named the Star Trek Universe: The Official Starships Collection and debuted in March 2021 . [59] Robinson added, " We've got 9 or 10 Picard ships followed by the Disco season 3 fleet. " [60]

In June 2021, Eaglemoss released its first, larger XL Edition model of a "hero ship" from PIC within its Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection . Three starship classes from the series are also covered in the second edition of the company's Star Trek: Shipyards - Starfleet Ships 2294 to the Future reference book . [61]

Hallmark has scheduled the release of its La Sirena Christmas ornament for October 2021 . [62]

On 13 July 2021 , ViacomCBS Consumer Products and Playmates Toys jointly announced that the latter had acquired new licensing for " action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories ", and slated the first of these products for retail release in 2022. Among other Star Trek series and films, this licensing encompasses Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Lower Decks , and Star Trek: Prodigy . [63]

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Series Finale Recap: Saying Farewell

In the end, the final season of “Picard” was a worthy send-off for the “Next Generation” crew.

Two men and a Klingon walk into a starship

Season 3, Episode 10: ‘The Last Generation’

“What began over 35 years ago ends tonight,” Jean-Luc Picard says, standing on his favorite bridge and glaring at his most distasteful enemy. It recalled his “The line must be drawn here!” from “First Contact.”

This was ostensibly a reference to the Federation’s longstanding battle with the Borg, but it also applies to “The Next Generation” franchise. (The show began airing in 1987 and 35 years ago would be 1988.) And if this is the last time we see these characters, that’s OK. Not because this season of “Picard” wasn’t a strong one. Quite the opposite, in fact: It was quite good and recaptured everything that made “Next Generation” what it was.

The characters all used special skills to work together and save humankind. Some of the dialogue was campy. There were plot holes. And there were classic “Star Trek” tropes, like Jean-Luc nonsensically going to the Borg cube, when he was likely the least physically capable of the old crew in fighting off the Borg.

But overall, this season was a worthy send-off for the crew. It wasn’t perfect, but neither were the show or any of the movies. But it was worth doing. The story justified its existence, advancing each of the main characters and filling in some gaps.

And it confirmed one last time that “The Next Generation” was greater than the sum of its parts. That might have been why the first two seasons of “Picard” didn’t work as well. Jean-Luc wasn’t the best character he could be without his old friends. The chemistry wasn’t as fluid, and the story wasn’t as deep.

In the finale, we learn a bit about what the Borg have been up to, though I remain baffled that no one brings up Jurati or the whole Good Borg thing from last season . (Maybe it was for the best.) There was no collective left — only the Borg Queen remained, she claimed, though we know from last season’s events that this isn’t exactly true.

It was Jack who found the Borg Queen, at least in her telling. She speaks in a way that is contrary to what we’ve known about the Borg: She says she was lonely and that the Borg were left to starve. (This kind of undercuts the Borg’s whole message of being the perfect beings.) But now, the Borg want to evolve rather than assimilate, and Jack is the perfect partner to do that. (In order to survive, the Borg Queen, I think, resorted to Borg cannibalism. Yikes! Hope those drones won Employee of the Month or something.)

The Borg and the changelings came to an agreement in which the changelings would be the Borg’s vehicle to carry out some villainous plan to help them procreate. Aside from an ill-fated revenge that they didn’t really need the Borg for, I don’t know what the changelings really got out of this alliance.

Elsewhere, classic Star Trekking happens. Worf and Riker fight off some baddies on the cube. Beverly uses her now finely honed combat skills to fire weapons. (It’s somewhat amusing that Geordi refurbished the Enterprise D for display at the fleet museum and also included a loaded torpedo system. Thank goodness he went above and beyond!) Data shows off his lightning fast piloting skills, assisted by his newly acquired gut instinct.

Beverly is faced with an impossible decision: Blow up her son and save the galaxy, or, uh, don’t. I loved that Geordi is the one who asks her permission, because he now understands a parent’s love for a child. And when it comes time to fire on the beacon, Geordi really, really doesn’t want to do it.

Jean-Luc finds another solution. He assimilates himself so he can get in contact with Jack in the Borg collective. Jean-Luc isn’t human, of course. He is an android — apparently, he can just plug himself in to the network like a flash drive. Jean-Luc tells Jack that he is the missing part of Jean-Luc’s life. (Patrick Stewart plays this perfectly.)

Jean-Luc is finally able to admit to himself how lonely he was outside of Starfleet, and that Starfleet merely covered up that loneliness rather than filling it entirely. Jean-Luc gives his son something he’s craved his whole life: approval and unconditional love. And Jean-Luc also won’t let his son go. He offers to stay in the hole with him so they can climb out together, and Jean-Luc gets to be the father he never knew he wanted to be.

Eventually, Jean-Luc pushes Jack to unassimilate himself and turn against the Queen. And that’s that: The universe is saved again. Our thanks to the crew of the Enterprise for the umpteenth time.

The episode ends in the only appropriate way for the “Next Generation” crew: They sit around and toast one another. Jean-Luc quotes Shakespeare, and then they whoop and play cards just like at the end of “All Good Things…,” the series finale of the original “Next Generation.”

The end wasn’t perfect, but it was proper. And that’s about all you can ask from a season like this. I don’t need any more — I want the Enterprise D crew to Costanza it and leave on a high note. They’ve earned it.

Odds and ends

Somewhat amusingly, Jean-Luc does not express any concern for or otherwise mention Laris throughout this season , another example of the team behind “Picard” trying to erase the first two seasons of the show from existence. But Laris, for her part, actually appeared in the season premiere and, one could argue, help put the events of the reunion in motion.

I keep thinking about that scene early this season with Riker and Jean-Luc at the bar, when Riker has to defend the honor of the Enterprise D. We didn't know it then, but that foreshadowed the whole season.

I would have liked to hear more about what Worf has been up to since the events of “Nemesis.” At the end of “Deep Space Nine,” Worf was named an ambassador to Qo’noS. In “Nemesis,” Worf somehow just becomes a member of the Enterprise crew again with little explanation. In this season, it is implied that Worf helped destroy the Enterprise E — more detail would have been nice.

The “Worf as comic relief” thing, as when he fell asleep on the bridge immediately after he helps to save civilization, also wore thin. But there is a fun callback in the last scene of the episode: Beverly saying Worf should have another glass of prune juice. A warrior’s drink!

Pavel Chekov’s son, Anton, being president of the Federation was a nice touch. Anton is likely a reference to Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov in the rebooted feature films beginning in 2009. He died in 2016 as a result of a car accident .

When Seven and Raffi figure out a way to transport assimilated crew members off the bridge using phaser rifles, it’s quite the deus ex machina. That technology would’ve been helpful all season!

That was a funny moment when the cook is ordered to pilot the Titan. He didn’t even finish flight training, why is Seven making him take the wheel? Have Raffi do it! (Within minutes, the cook executes complicated evasive maneuvers, so that must have been some training.)

At first, I found New Data to be jarring but after a couple episodes, this version grew on me. When he says he hates the Borg, you can see the Lore side of him burst through. It’s a fresh take on Data and Brent Spiner pulls it off.

That was a nice bit of wordless acting from Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis when Riker heads down to the cube for yet another mission with Jean-Luc. The swashbuckling Riker gives the slightest of smiles, as if to say, “You know who you married. You know why I have to do this.” And Troi reluctantly agrees. Later, when Troi tells Riker he will only have a minute or so to save Jean-Luc once the Enterprise fires on the Cube, he responds again with cool confidence in a near death situation.

There will certainly be some disappointment among fans that Kate Mulgrew did not reprise her role as Admiral Janeway this season. The events in “Voyager” presumably are the reason the Borg cube was in such terrible shape when Jean-Luc beams aboard. Given the multiple references to Janeway and what was happening on Earth, it would have been nice to have gotten a glimpse of her. (And man, how gnarly does the Borg Queen look now?)

Ah, there’s Tuvok, offering Seven her own ship. As Vulcan as ever.

In the grand scheme of things, this is still only the second most successful attack by the Borg on Earth. Sure, they get to Earth, bring down the planetary defense systems and attack cities directly, all while using Starfleet ships. But in “First Contact,” they actually went back in time and assimilated all of Earth before the pesky Enterprise crew initiated a do-over. And honestly, if Jean-Luc and his merry band hasn’t been able to rescue Earth from Evil Jack, they could have just done what they did last season or in “First Contact”: Go back in time. It’s easy!

Troi gets to drive the Enterprise D again. It went better than it did last time, when she crashed it.

Beverly is an admiral now? What a promotion, considering the decades she spent out of Starfleet running a rogue operation. I wonder if Riker, Geordi or any of the others were like, “Hey, what about us?”

Ed Speleers did an admirable job as Jack Crusher. It’s not easy to go toe-to-toe with Patrick Stewart, but Speleers fits in seamlessly as Beverly and Jean-Luc’s son. (While we’re here, what’s up with Jack’s brother, Wesley?)

I hope all of you stuck around for the post-credits scene. Q is still alive! Of course he is. We don’t acknowledge last season around these parts.

  • You are not prepared for the final season of Star Trek: Picard

The last season of Picard is truly wild, and while it’s filled with action, it never seems to lose that sense of wonder that makes Star Trek Star Trek.

Two old men stare at a younger blond woman. They are all dressed in Star Trek uniforms.

After two middling but slowly improving seasons of Star Trek: Picard , the show has returned for one last hurrah — and god damn, was it worth the rest. If you have ever considered yourself a fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation (or even, to a lesser extent, Deep Space Nine or Voyager ), then get ready for the love letter coming your way on February 16th.

While this season puts its characters in terrible spots, and there are rumors a few will die by season’s end, this wild ride has a real genuine affection for all the players. It's the absolute most fun I’ve had watching Paramount Plus’ myriad of Star Trek shows. And part of my love of this final season comes from how excited the show is to take some of Star Trek ’s most flawless heroes and find the humanity in them. These characters are messy dumbasses, and it makes the adventure all the better.

Back in Deep Space Nine , Worf, new to the station and struggling with the many conflicting personalities of the crew, speaks fondly of the crew of the Enterprise-D from Star Trek: The Next Generation. “We were like warriors from the ancient sagas,” he says wistfully, “there was nothing we could not do.” Which was true. The crew of TNG fought gods, survived wars, discovered new species, traveled through time, got turned into monsters and back to people again, and occasionally got busy with alien ghosts inhabiting antique candles (you had to be there).

An older woman points a phase rifle at someone off-screen.

But the problem with TNG was the characters seemed to be without significant flaws. Sure, Picard liked Shakespeare a bit too much, Riker had his love of the trombone, and Troi’s fatal flaw was her love of chocolate. But when put up against other crews, like the Deep Space Nine one (it had a terrorist on the team!) and Voyager (it had multiple terrorists on the team!), the TNG crew felt more sanitized. For many fans, this was the boring crew.

Yet, if you squinted, you could see where the show glossed over what might be some significant character issues. Picard’s love of adventure got him killed multiple times, while Crusher was so sure of herself she’d regularly ignore commands and once even was convinced the universe was the broken one. Riker cracked jokes and put his career first to avoid intimacy, and Geordi LaForge was so obsessed with engineering he fell in love with a hologram. These characters have always had flaws, but they rarely, if ever, drove the action.

Until Star Trek: Picard .

Twenty years after Nemesis , this crew’s last big adventure together, they’ve all returned, and they finally feel like messy humans instead of warriors from the ancient sagas. Picard and Riker race to save Crusher, Worf deals with a new threat to the Federation, and Troi, Geordi and whoever Brent Spiner is playing this time around get caught up in the action too. They all still feel like the characters of TNG — only pried out of the 1990s syndicated space adventure mold and put into the 2020s prestige streaming show mold.

A young Black woman dressed in a Starfleet uniform stares at something off screen with concern.

Watching the first six episodes of this season, I kept thinking this was what it must have felt like to be a fan of the original series and finally get great movies like Wrath of Kahn and The Voyage Home . These are still the same characters, played by the same actors, but we’re seeing them in a way the original show never could have allowed. And I don’t just mean that it’s more violent, although Worf does dismember some people. Sometimes the characters make bad decisions in Picard . They mess up. They fight.

But when you worry Picard is starting to feel like a too-edgy sequel, there will be little moments of wonder you can only get in Star Trek . New discoveries. Clever puzzles that get solved. Old villains reappear and feel more menacing thanks to the bigger budget and better special effects of Picard .

Picard and Riker flank Seven of Nine on the bridge of the Titan. They are all seated, with Seven seated in the center.

Like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, this feels like a proper Star Trek show in a way a lot of live-action Star Trek has failed to. But because these are characters we’ve known since 1987, there’s real emotional weight to these adventures. And some shockingly good acting. Jeri Ryan is back as Seven of Nine, and she continues to steal every scene she’s in by virtue of just being that good, but she’s not carrying the whole show on her back like she sometimes did the last two seasons. Patrick Stewart seems to sometimes doze his way through Picard , but there’s a scene with him and Gates McFadden’s Crusher that will have you sitting up straight — eyes glued to the screen. Michael Dorn and Michelle Hurd both have their own scene-stealing moments as Worf and Raffi, respectively, and in one scene, Brent Spiner reminds us of why he and his characters Data and Lore had such fervent followings in the ’90s. There’s something a little electric as all these characters come together.

There are still four episodes of Star Trek: Picard I haven’t seen, and the show could drop the ball spectacularly. The wildness of this show (you should really make an effort to avoid all spoilers) could veer into absolutely absurd territory. But in these first six episodes, you have a very goofy, very thrilling, and very fun sequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation .

Star Trek: Picard airs weekly on Paramount Plus beginning February 16 .

Star Trek: Picard : 7 Things To Know About the Final Season From the Cast and Showrunner

The next generation is back to steer the paramount+ sci-fi series' last season into dock. the shows' star patrick stewart and more cast members along with showrunner terry matalas offer insights into season 3 and what fans may find beyond its final frontier..

TAGGED AS: Paramount , Sci-Fi , science fiction , streaming , television , TV

Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) is about to embark on his final mission in the third season of Pararmount+’s Star Trek: Picard . Of course, never say never when it comes to Stewart reprising his role or, indeed, the rest of his Star Trek: The Next Generation castmates finding a place a in Star Trek ‘s future. You need only look at bonus features on the Blu-ray releases of The Next Generation to see the group wrestling with notions of both retirement and continuing.

Those same concerns may become text in Picard ‘s final 10-episode run. As announced when the program was still streaming episodes of the second season, the majority of Stewart’s TNG shipmates – Jonathan Frakes , Brent Spiner , LeVar Burton , Marina Sirtis , Michael Dorn , and Gates McFadden – return as their classic characters (mostly). The intent of the season: to give the group the proper send-off they never quite received in the Next Generation ’s feature film series.

Nevertheless, Picard ’s final season acknowledges the gap of years between their last film, Star Trek: Nemesis , and now; in fact, that distance has been a constant in the show’s various storylines. And if you haven’t been keeping up, but want to see the last mission of the Next Generation crew, here are a few things we were able to learn from the cast and showrunner Terry Matalas about Picard ‘s third season.

1. It’s Set in the 25th Century

Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes and Jeri Ryan in Star Trek: Picard

Although Picard always took place in the last years of the 24th century – the era first explored in TNG and continued in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Lower Decks – the third season proudly announces itself as entering a new century. To TNG faithful, the century shift should offer a sense of momentum and reaffirm Star Trek ‘s commitment to setting out further in its own fictional history and future while Star Trek: Discovery tells stories in its far removed future and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seeks out new life in the original Star Trek ‘s 23rd century.

At the Television Critics Association winter press tour in January, Trek universe executive producer Alex Kurtzman suggested employing the various time periods allows Trek to grow while also holding onto its core ideals.

“It’s still always about [ Star Trek creator Gene] Roddenberry’s vision of optimism,” he said. “[But] you meet different crews who face different situations.”

2. The Ship Featured Is U.S.S. Titan  and Its Captain Is Unmissable

Todd Stashwick in STAR TREK: PICARD

One new crew viewers will meet in Picard ‘s third season is the complement of the U.S.S. Titan . The ship was first referenced in Nemesis as Captain Riker’s (Frakes) first command following a 10–12 year stint as Picard’s first officer. He has also been seen taking the ship out for missions on Lower Decks and the first season of Picard .

But the ship will be different this time around. Photographed with cooler color temperatures and featuring none of the famous carpeting adorning TNG ‘s Enterprise , the steeler vision of the ship also reflects the sterner disposition of Captain Shaw (Todd Stashwick), its less-than-approving commanding officer. When speaking with Rotten Tomatoes, Stashwick joked that Shaw is “barely noticeable.”

“Fans want to see new things with characters that they love,” he continued. “He certainly is new. The way he treats them, we really haven’t seen that before; that sort of irreverence. That sort of passive aggression. I think they’re going to love it.”

As an ongoing character for the season, Stashwick said Shaw will get to “poke at their whole legacy” and that, eventually, fans will enjoy the character, who gets to be a critic of the Next Generation . Of course, it remains to be seen if that enjoyment will be direct or in a “love-to-hate” manner.

Jeri Ryan in STAR TREK: PICARD

Despite Shaw presenting the ship as an icier environment for the TNG gang, there will be one familiar face aboard the Titan : Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). Although the topic of her name – an aspect of the character going right back to her earliest Voyager days – continues to be a source of conflict for her.

“It’s very deep-rooted personal thing for Seven, and it took a long time for her to accept being [Seven versus ‘Seven of Nine’],” Ryan said. As fans who have seen the season 3 trailers know, Seven is finally in a Starfleet uniform, but despite its utopian ideals, she will “be butting heads with somebody else who doesn’t want that to be her name and wants this [her human name] to be her name.”

Ryan added it will be “frustrating for her” to once again tackle the issue of her name when “she has finally embraced it and accepted herself.”

3. Echoes of “All Good Things…” Are Inevitable, But Not Necessarily Intentional

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, Patrick Stewart, 'All Good Things...'

Reuniting the TNG cast 20-or-so years after Nemesis will undoubtedly put the group’s TV finale, “All Good Things…,” into the minds of fans. The Next Generation  two-hour closer sees Picard experiencing a possible future some 20 years ahead. His crew has scattered, some are estranged, and Picard himself has retired to the family winery in France. Naturally enough, Picard , as a whole, features some similarities to “All Good Things …,” but Matalas maintained direct thematic connections are not intended, although they may still occur.

“We did look at it,” he said. “It’s the greatest television finale of all time, and it is a proper send-off to Star Trek: The Next Generation . This [season] is a send-off to them now, post feature films and looking at them decades later.”

Gates McFadden in STAR TREK: PICARD

For McFadden, whose ultimate future may feature a few more ties to the one seen in “All Good Things…,” added, “I loved the way it was dealt with this time because all of our characters have such a huge history, both as people, the actors, and as the characters.”

That history matters in either vision of the future, but where “All Good Things…” reverted to TNG ’s status quo – something largely unchanged in the Next Generation feature films as well –McFadden felt Matalas and Picard ’s overall tendency for character examination opened a “new world of exploration, of conflict in our characters, and the loneliness and the vulnerabilities and the humanity of our characters.”

At the TCA press conference, Stewart echoed her comment, wishing “more of those elements with Beverly could’ve been touched on earlier.”

Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut in Star Trek: Picard

Burton noted the life of his character, Geordi LaForge, diverts “significantly” from the one Picard glimpsed in the TNG finale. But one commonality does exist: “I’m really, really pleased that Geordi has kids and that we see him as a father. That was hugely attractive to me, and I thought really a satisfying arc for him,” he explained.

The one definitely intentional call-back to TNG ’s final mission log, the names of Geordi’s daughters, Alandra and Sidney, were pulled directly from a scene in “All Good Things …,” Matalas added.

“I thank Terry Matalas for that,” Burton continued. “He agreed with me that it was important to right what I considered a great injustice done to Geordi in terms of his inability to form healthy and lasting relationships with human beings [during The Next Generation ]. And so he addressed that right away, right off the bat, and I’m really grateful.”

4. Picard and Riker Get To Have an Informal Adventure

Jonathan Frakes and Patrick Stewart in Episode 301, Star Trek: Picard

One of the more fun elements of the season is a chance to see Picard and Riker pal around on an adventure while no longer being tied to the rigid Starfleet command structure.

“That provided us with a new starting point obviously, but also the opportunity for a new type of behavior since the hierarchy of the [Horatio] Hornblower military setup that Roddenberry set was not there,” Frakes said of the storyline. “We were there together as peers, if you will, or brothers.”

He also thanked Matalas for pitching a “Butch-and-Sundance type of thing” to him and Stewart as an opening adventure for the season. And, as viewers will quickly see, the informality between the two characters pays dividends.

5. Raffi Gets Back To One

Michelle Hurd of the Paramount+ original series STAR TREK: PICARD

Although the second season of Picard wrapped up the stories of nearly all its supporting characters, Michelle Hurd ’s Raffi carries on as a major part of the story. Introduced as Picard’s attaché at the time of the Romulan relief effort and as a capable intelligence officer, Raffi’s more obsessive traits saw her booted from Starfleet by the time Picard ’s first season began. Across the two previous seasons, though, she returned to the fold and now returns to gathering intelligence. In Hurd’s estimation, it is the character’s best destiny.

“This is what she did before she was in Starfleet. She’s a master spy,” the actor said.

When viewers first met Raffi, she was quite critical of some Starfleet actions and its politics, but according to Hurd, “Starfleet was always this force that kept her grounded, kept her sober, because it was a place for her to be and she had a job.”

As the season begins, Raffi is at the helm of the starship La Sirena , formerly owned by departed Picard character Cristobal Rios ( Santiago Cabrera ), and “given free rein [aboard that ship].” Once again working as an intelligence agent, she’s “able to really use the skills that she’s always had.”

“She’s able to navigate and she doesn’t have to deal with anybody else talking in her head,” Hurd continued. “I think it’s just a natural progression.”

Michael Dorn in STAR TREK: PICARD.

Raffi’s continued presence on the series also maintains a level of crossover for Picard with the character holding the banner for the group assembled in its first year, Seven bringing her continued story from Voyager , and Dorn feeling he represents both his time on TNG and his work on Deep Space Nine .

“[The DS9 writers] really delved deeply into [Worf] and into the Klingon Empire, and the stories they came up with were spectacular and it gave him a lot to do,” he said of his time on the third live-action Star Trek spinoff, the first to use serialized storytelling and set itself away from a starship.

As seen in the season 3 trailer, Worf claims to adhere to pacifism at this point in his life, but as Dorn clarified at the TCA press tour in January, “Worf has always been on a journey for who he is” and the teasing comment in the preview is the latest step in that trek.

6. Some Things Never Change

LeVar Burton in STAR TREK: PICARD

Although modern Trek follows more of the serialized storytelling of DS9 and looks more like a feature film each week than its 1980s and 90s TV antecedents, the cast said actually shooting the show feels very much the same from the days on the Paramount lot in the 20th century.

“It certainly felt familiar being together,” Burton explained. “We have acted with one another more than anyone else in our respective careers. We’ve spent hours on soundstages in each other’s company, and plus the nature of our relationships offscreen got deeper over time. And so we were all able to bring that depth [to the characters].”

Brent Spiner of the Paramount+ original series STAR TREK: PICARD.

Also supporting the ongoing TNG atmosphere are several other cameos from established characters and actors. The two revealed so far: Spiner returning as Data’s corrupt brother, Lore, and Daniel Davis as the holographic but sentient construct of Professor James Moriarty. Additionally, Matalas teased in January “there are a few Next Gen –adjacent characters who will return this season, but we’re holding them back until [the episodes] air.”

7. It May Not Be the End

Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: PIcard

Although this third season Picard is billed as its last, it may not be the end for the characters. Back in January, Stewart told reporters during the show’s TCA press panel that he would consider subsequent appearances after Picard ‘s final episode streams.

“If we can maintain the work we did on seasons one, two, and three, than yes. There is still enormous potential in the narrative. And there are doors left open,” he said.

Kurtzman added at the time that while the show was always envisioned as a three-year mission, “anything is possible.”

When McFadden spoke to us, she expressed her hope that even as Star Trek continues to expand into the 25th century, it still has a place for the TNG cast. “I read all those 10 scripts and I didn’t see it as a send-off as much as we are engaged in the present of the world,” she said. “It’s a new world, things have changed, and there is so much yet to be done.”

“You can do anything you want to do [with Trek ],” added Dorn. “You never know what’s in studios’ minds, but it seems like it’s the right thing [to continue with the characters.]”

Ed Speleers in STAR TREK: PICARD

Matalas, for his part, suggested more stories set in the new century may happen. For one, Ed Speleers (pictured above), who has appeared in Outlander and Downton Abbey , plays a new character in season 3 of Picard .

“What [this season of Picard ] does feel like is a completion of the Star Trek Next Generation arc. It does feel like a passing of the torch to sort of a ‘next generation.’ I think that these legacy characters should be a part of that [and] I would love nothing more than to see [it happen].”

He continued. “I don’t want to say what happens to Beverly Crusher [as an example], but let’s just say that she has a role in, possibly, the future of the Federation that’s important. And so it is very much an ending and a beginning at the same time.”

And, just as it seemed on those now 10-year-old Blu-ray bonus features, the future of Star Trek and the Next Generation characters is something the cast welcomes if and when the call comes to join Starfleet once more.

Star Trek: What Is The Picard Maneuver?

Jean-Luc Picard looking serious

Plenty of Star Trek captains  perform brave or cunning battle operations to cement themselves in Starfleet Academy. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) beat the Kobayashi Maru , and in another timeline, his own father, George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth) gave his own life to save those fleeing the USS Kelvin. When it comes to the timeline of the enigmatic Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" though, a clever tactic came back to haunt him in ways he never imagined when he was forced to revisit his own maneuver during Season 1, Episode 9 — "The Battle." The Picard maneuver sees Jean-Luc play a game of warp-speed chicken of sorts, when the USS Stargazer (his vessel at the time) goes into high warp speed directly in front of an enemy ship, screwing with the opponent's sensors.

As a result, the Ferengi ship detected what appeared to be two of the same vessel on their scanners, when it was actually Picard and his crew appearing faster than the enemy could recognize. The Ferengi incorrectly fired upon the wrong signal, allowing the Stargazer to outsmart and overpower their attackers. The brave captain even created a variation of this years later on "Picard." This seemingly revered battle strategy wasn't perfect though, and it was only when Jean-Luc fell victim to some good old fashioned mind control that one of his own crew found a flaw in his legendary maneuver.

Data found Picard's maneuver was just hot air

Data looking forward

During "The Battle," it is discovered that Picard is being manipulated by a thought maker, a tool used by DaiMon Bok. Jean-Luc believes himself to be captain of the Stargazer once more, and that his brand new ship, the Enterprise, is another ship set to attack. When Jonathan Frakes' Riker (famous for a maneuver of his own) anticipates his captain's old strategy, he appoints Data (Brent Spiner) to figure a way out of this textbook trick that could doom the Enterprise.

Thankfully, Data does the job by looking at the compression of gas in space around the real spacecraft, allowing the Enterprise to snag the Stargazer in a tractor beam and avoid Jean-Luc's methods. While his android Lt. Commander Data might have found a hole in Picard's plan, it didn't stop Starfleet Academy from recognizing the achievement and rewarding Jean-Luc for his achievement. On "PIcard" Season 1, Episode 1 — "Remembrance," it's revealed that the now-retired admiral was awarded the Grankite Order of Tactics, Class of Excellence. It's one the many intensely sharp demonstrations of capability in space warfare that Picard was able to display so brilliantly. Kirk can have the likes of the Kobayashi Maru and even the Corbomite Maneuver, but he's one of the few explorers who can put his own name to such a space-saving strategy.

Every Picard Family Member In Star Trek

Jean-luc was already synthetic before becoming an android in star trek: picard, no one noticed star trek: picard season 3 subtly set up uss enterprise-d’s return.

  • Jean-Luc Picard's regret about not starting a family in Star Trek Generations was resolved in Picard season 3.
  • Picard discovered he had a son, Jack Crusher, who joins Starfleet and carries on the Picard legacy.
  • Jack Crusher serves on the USS Enterprise-G, alongside Captain Seven of Nine, potentially facing adventures with Q.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) expressed a particular regret in Star Trek Generations, but Star Trek: Picard season 3 fixed it for him. Throughout his time on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Picard prioritized his Starfleet career, devoting his life to serving the United Federation of Planets. Picard's crew on the USS Enterprise-D became his family, but he still kept them at arm's length most of the time. Even when enduring traumatic experiences and facing off against frightening foes, Picard rarely let his fear or anxiety show.

Star Trek: Picard season 2 revealed that Jean-Luc's childhood trauma kept him from opening up and gave him reservations about being a father. Jean-Luc chose to focus on his career and he rarely regretted that decision, although Picard did express some regret about not starting a family. In Star Trek Generations , Jean-Luc learned that his brother Robert (Jeremy Kemp), sister-in-law, and nephew René (David Tristan Birkin, Christopher James Miller) died in a tragic accidental fire, meaning no one was left to carry on the Picard legacy. But S tar Trek: Picard season 3 changed that.

Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), too, prioritized exploring the stars over starting a family, but several Star Trek captains have successfully managed to do both.

Admiral Jean-Luc Picard is part of a proud family of explorers and wine-makers. The Picard family spans generations of Star Trek.

Jean-Luc’s Biggest Star Trek Generations Regret Was Fixed By Picard Season 3

Jean-luc expressed regret about never starting a family in star trek generations..

Upon learning of the death of his brother and nephew in Star Trek Generations, Captain Picard opened up to Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis). Picard had considered his nephew the closest thing he would ever get to having a son and he felt comforted that René would continue the family line. Without the "responsibility to carry on the family line," as Troi put it, Jean-Luc had few regrets about devoting his life to Starfleet. René left Jean-Luc lamenting that after him, there would "be no more Picards."

Jean-Luc, Beverly, and Jack were together as a family,

Star Trek: Picard season 3 reunited the original crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation , revealing that Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and Jean-Luc Picard had a son. The existence of Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) came as a surprise to Jean-Luc, as Beverly had kept him a secret. After Picard got over the shock of discovering he had a son, he sat down with Jack and the two began to get to know each other. By the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3 , Jean-Luc, Beverly, and Jack were together as a family, and Jack had joined Starfleet, following in the footsteps of his impressive parents.

Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher are both Starfleet Admirals at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3.

Will Jack Crusher Take His Father Jean-Luc Picard’s Last Name?

Now that jack has a relationship with his father, will he add picard to his name.

Dr. Beverly Crusher raised Jack on her own, and he took the name Jack Crusher to protect Jean-Luc's son from his many enemies. It remains to be seen whether Jack will change his surname to Picard. Star Trek: Picard established that Kestra (Lulu Wilson), the daughter of Deanna Troi and Captain William Rike r (Jonathan Frakes) uses Troi-Riker as her last name, so Jack could take on the name Crusher-Picard or Picard-Crusher. Regardless of what name he chooses to go by, Jack still carries on the Picard line with his very existence.

Jack Crusher breezed through Starfleet Academy in one year, which he attributed to "nepotism."

Not only did Jack Crusher join Starfleet at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3, but he also landed a position on the newly rechristened USS Enterprise-G. While it remains unknown exactly what Jack Crusher's position as Special Counselor to the Captain entails, he will serve on the bridge alongside Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). Hopefully, Seven and Jack's adventures will someday make it to the screen, especially considering Q (John de Lancie) appears to have an interest in Jack. Whatever happens, Jean-Luc Picard should feel comfort in the fact that he now has a son to carry on his Star Trek legacy.

Star Trek: Picard

How did Wesley Crusher turn into a time-traveling space god on 'Star Trek?'

Dr. Crusher's eldest son has come a long way since hanging out on the Enterprise.

Image of a young Wesley Crusher in a gray Starfleet Uniform.

Who is Wesley Crusher?

Who is the traveler, what did wesley do next.

  • What has he been up to since "TNG"?
  • Why did he turn up in "Star Trek: Prodigy"?
  • What happened to him after the timeline was restored?

SPOILER WARNING for "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Prodigy," "Star Trek: Nemesis," and "Star Trek: Picard."

When "Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG)" first left Spacedock in 1987, Wesley Crusher was an ordinary — albeit super-intelligent — kid who became a valued member of Captain Jean-Luc Picard 's Enterprise crew. Fast forward to the latest season of " Star Trek: Prodigy ," however, and he's a bona fide master of space and time, effectively "Star Trek's" answer to " Doctor Who ."

Below we explain how Beverly Crusher's eldest son made the journey from enthusiastic teen to time-travelling space god — and how the seeds for Wesley's evolution were sown as far back as the very first season of "TNG."

Related: Best 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' episodes

Captain Jean-Luc Picard showing a young Wesley Crusher around the bridge of the USS Enterprise. Dr. Beverly Crusher, Wesley's mother, is standing in the background.

Wesley is the son of Dr. Beverly Crusher , chief medical officer of the USS Enterprise-D, and Jack, her late husband. Jack was Jean-Luc Picard's best friend at Starfleet Academy, and they served together on the USS Stargazer, Captain Picard 's first command. Picard was still blaming himself for his friend's death in the line of duty when Beverly and Wesley arrived on the Enterprise.

Despite his friendship with Jack and the will-they-won't-they romance with Beverly, Picard didn't warm to Wesley right away. But the boy's prodigious intellect — and a recommendation from a mysterious alien known simply as "the Traveler" — quickly led to Wesley being granted the rank of Acting Ensign.

The Traveler, an extraordinary being, takes an interest in the boy genius, Wesley Crusher (who is wearing some fabulous orange knitwear).

Reportedly from Tau Alpha C and with a given name "unpronounceable by humans," the enigmatic Traveler (played by Eric Menyuk) first stopped by the Enterprise in the Season 1 episode " Where No One Has Gone Before ." He was brought on board to assist in experiments that would allow the Enterprise to break speed records.

Thanks to the Traveler's mastery of space and time — and an ability to "focus thought" — he was able to manipulate the ship's warp engines to transport the crew to a faraway galaxy. After bringing the Enterprise home — via a " 2001: A Space Odyssey "-style light show — he vanished into thin air.

Before his abrupt departure, the Traveler told Picard that Wesley "and a few like him are why I travel," comparing the boy to a certain Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. "Not with music," he explained, "but with the equally lovely intricacies of time, energy, propulsion…"

The Traveler urged the captain to nurture Wesley's abilities, without telling the boy — or Beverly — about his full potential. This conversation explains why Picard made the bizarre decision to give an unqualified teenager full access to the bridge.

The Traveler, Geordi La Forge and Wesley Crusher standing in the starships control room. Wesley is now wearing a red Starfleet uniform.

By the time the Traveler reappeared in Season 4's Episode 5, " Remember Me " — in which he helped Wesley rescue Beverly from an imploding warp bubble — the young Crusher had replaced his trademark knitwear with a standard issue Starfleet uniform . He was also given the keys to drive the USS Enterprise .

When Wesley left for Starfleet Academy a few episodes later, however, his career didn't unfold as planned. After an accident involving his Nova Squadron flight team caused the death of a fellow cadet, it turned out that Wesley and his colleagues had been practicing a banned maneuver. Their attempted cover-up led to Wesley having to repeat the year.

Wesley's most pivotal moment came in the final season of "The Next Generation," when a vacation on the Enterprise took an unexpected twist. He was already disillusioned with the Academy when a vision of his late father told him "to find a path that is truly yours."

Wesley Crusher and the Traveler meet again.

He subsequently resigned his commission to protest against orders that would forcibly relocate Native American settlers from a world the Federation had agreed to surrender to the Cardassians. During a fight on the planet's surface, Wesley unwittingly stepped out of time, and one of the settlement's leaders revealed he was actually the Traveler in disguise.

The Traveler told Wesley that he had evolved to a new plane of existence and was "ready to explore places where thought and energy combine in ways you can't even imagine." Mr. Crusher left the Enterprise-D for the final time, embarking on an adventure in space and time with the Traveler as his guide.

What has Wesley been up to since "The Next Generation"?

Wesley Crusher gives the Traveler's recruitment spiel to Kore.

Wesley made a brief appearance in " Star Trek: Nemesis ," sitting at the top table during Will Riker and Deanna Troi's wedding. He was clearly wearing a Starfleet uniform, which suggests he briefly came back to Starfleet after his resignation. (A deleted scene from the movie — not technically canon — revealed that Wesley had agreed to manage the Engineering night shift on the USS Titan, under the command of Will Riker.) It's safe to assume, however, that Wesley's return to the rank and file was short-lived.

A future incarnation showed up in 2024 Los Angeles in " Star Trek: Picard "'s second season. He told Kore , a clone created by scientist Dr. Adam Soong, the following: "A long time ago, I was known as Wesley Crusher, but now I am a Traveler of all space and time."

He explained that the whole of time is a grand and fragile tapestry, and that he, his fellow Travelers, and the Supervisors who work for them are on a mission to ensure that everything unfolds as it should (sounds rather like the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Time Variance Authority who protect the Sacred Timeline, as seen in the " Loki " TV show). Wesley successfully recruited Kore to join the organization.

Why did Wesley turn up in "Star Trek: Prodigy"?

scene from a sci-fi tv show, depicting a bearded man in a red shirt with squid-like creatures cruising through the air near him

In the second season of " Star Trek: Prodigy ," Dal, Gwyn, Jankom, Zero, Rok and Murf inadvertently altered the course of history by preventing the USS Protostar from crashing on the prison colony of Tars Lamora. That meant they could never discover the ship in the first place, never meet Admiral Janeway, and never be in the right place to alter history by preventing the USS Protostar from crashing — the TL;DR version is that they broke the very fabric of time . Pretty serious stuff. They also unleashed the Loom : vicious, interdimensional monsters that have an insatiable appetite to consume everything out of existence.

Wesley hoped to use his unique mastery of space, time, thought and history to get things back on track, saving the universe in the process. And, yes, he still had a fondness for knitted sweaters.

What happened to Wesley after the original timeline was restored?

He did something he should have done years ago and visited his mother, who immediately introduced him to his new baby brother, Jack. We're assuming Wesley already had some idea about Jack Crusher 's destiny in "Star Trek: Picard"'s third season…

After that, it looks like he'll spend the rest of his life exploring the cosmos, tinkering with timelines — and presumably cameoing in future "Trek" episodes and movies whenever the plot demands.

Richard's love affair with outer space started when he saw the original "Star Wars" on TV aged four, and he spent much of the ’90s watching "Star Trek”, "Babylon 5” and “The X-Files" with his mum. After studying physics at university, he became a journalist, swapped science fact for science fiction, and hit the jackpot when he joined the team at SFX, the UK's biggest sci-fi and fantasy magazine. He liked it so much he stayed there for 12 years, four of them as editor.
