Journeys: Discover India

Tour operator.

It's easy to see the world's sights. To stand in long lines, push through the crowds, and generally have the same standard-issue vacation as everyone else. But that's not good enough for us, and it's not good enough for you. We believe that travel should be easy. It should be fun. It should be worth your time and the price you paid. It should re-energize and transform. And above all else, it should be beyond the ordinary. Because how you see the world matters.

In 1882, Herman Tauck arrived in New York City from Germany in search of the American dream. His determination and values were passed on to his son, Arthur Tauck, who would realize that dream. With ingenuity and an innovative spirit, Arthur started Tauck Motor Tours, a travel company that would give birth to a new industry. The first tour, through the back roads of New England, was created by this 27-year-old in 1925. It embodied the same successful formula used by Tauck today: do the right thing. Craft a life-enriching travel experience; provide it at a single all-inclusive price; ensure there is great value for money; and rely on recommendations of satisfied customers to build a following and grow the business.

Two elements that did change over the next 90+ years – and three generations of Taucks – were the scope of destinations served and the variety of modes of travel used. Today Tauck delivers life-enriching travel experiences to every corner of the globe, incorporating small cruise ships, premium riverboats, trains, helicopters and more. What started as a New England motor coach tour company has truly evolved into an extraordinary global travel company. The fourth generation of Taucks is now involved in the company. While remarkable in any business, this seamless continuity across generations speaks to shared vision and values.

Throughout its history, the concept of “family” at Tauck has gone far beyond those sharing the surname to include hundreds of valued employees, and hundreds of thousands of loyal guests. The story of Tauck is the story of a unique American family company celebrating a passion for travel – a story that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Location: chitwan national park, accommodation: resort, accommodation name: meghauli serai, a taj safari.

This morning fly to Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the foothills of the Himalayas. The flora and fauna are particularly rich here. One of the few remaining populations of single-horned Asiatic rhinoceros lives in the park, and it’s also one of the last refuges of the Bengal tiger. After lunch at your lodge, go on a river safari by boat and enjoy a sundowner.

Day 7 : Explore Chitwan National Park By Jeep

In an open-topped vehicle, head into Chitwan National Park for a safari and picnic breakfast. Later, watch the elephants take a bath in the river – and interact with them! After lunch enjoy a free afternoon as you wish.

Day 8 : Bhaktapur And A Mountain Resort

Location: bhaktapur, accommodation name: dwarika's dhulikhel.

Pack your bags for a morning flight back to Kathmandu. When you land, explore Bhaktapur, the third largest city in the valley, where cobblestone streets free from traffic make walking in this ancient, picturesque town of traditional art and architecture a pleasure. Its famous centuries-old craftsmanship continues; you will find potters, woodcarvers and weavers here as well as photogenic temples, courtyards and venerable squares, and you’ll have an opportunity to view their handiwork. This afternoon, head to your resort in the town of Dhulikhel, where the views of the mountains might just leave you speechless. Dinner will be at your resort this evening.

Day 9 : Singing Bowls And Cooking

Location: agra.

Today, you'll have the opportunity for a bit of rest and relaxation as you may indulge and enjoy the many amenities offered to you at your hotel. Tonight, a singing bowl demonstration and a cooking demonstration precedes dinner at the hotel.

Day 10 : Fly To Delhi & On To Agra

Accommodation name: the oberoi amarvilas, agra.

A morning flight takes you back to Delhi followed by a drive to Agra, home to one of the world’s most famous edifices – and monuments to love – the Taj Mahal, built by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, as a memorial to his wife. A perfectly symmetrical building, the monument’s marble relief work is inlaid with precious stones. Your stay at The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra will take you back to a grand era of emperors. Dinner is at your choice of two of the hotel's fine restaurants tonight.

Day 11 : The Taj Mahal & Agra Red Fort

This morning, explore the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a jewel of Muslim architecture renowned as one of the “wonders of the world,” on a sunrise visit or after you have breakfast – or both! Next up is a visit to the city of Agra and the 16th-century red sandstone Agra Fort, an enormous complex of fairy tale palaces and mosques once surrounded by a deep moat. This evening’s Maharajah dinner will mean special preparations, with ladies being shown how to wear their choice of a traditional sari (with a delicate touch of henna painting), and the gentlemen putting on traditional turbans.

Day 12 : The Temples Of Khajuraho

Location: khajuraho, accommodation name: the lalit temple view khajuraho.

Take a train this morning from Agra to Jhansi followed by a drive to Khajuraho for an overnight stay. This small town is the site of a famous group of temples built between the 9th and 10th centuries by the Chandella Dynasty, praised by UNESCO for striking a perfect balance between architecture and sculpture; visit them today.

Day 13 : Bandhavgarh National Park

Location: bandhavgarh national park, accommodation name: mahua kothi, a taj safari.

Drive to Bandhavgarh National Park, a wildlife reserve where leopards, deer, jungle cats, wild dogs, and tigers live – although it is very rare to spot the elusive tiger, a master of camouflage. After lunch embark on a jungle safari in an open-topped Jeep for a chance to catch sight of the wildlife. You’ll stay three nights in this remarkable park.

Day 14 : Jungle Safaris Morning & Afternoon

Location: bandhavgarh forest booking office.

At daybreak, drive with expert trackers into the heart of the Bandhavgarh Forest, one of India’s most scenic areas. Keep your camera handy – the wildlife at home here include tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wild boar, jackals and a variety of birds. A lecture on the ongoing tiger conservation efforts in India precedes lunch back at the lodge then another jungle safari. Enjoy dinner this evening at the hotel.

Day 15 : Safari Drives & Village Life

Enjoy a morning’s jungle safari drive in Bandhavgarh National Park; in the afternoon, you can choose between further exploration on another jungle excursion, or lending a hand with one of several ongoing community projects alongside village residents. Attend an interactive cooking demonstration prior to dinner at your hotel.

Day 16 : Flight To Mumbai

Location: mumbai, accommodation name: the oberoi, mumbai.

Depart Bandhavgarh National Park this morning for a flight to Mumbai on the Arabian Sea. Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai today is India’s richest city: hip, multicultural, cosmopolitan, home to Bollywood and a thriving financial center. Arrive in Mumbai mid-afternoon, then take a brief guided orientation tour of landmark city sights en route to your oceanfront luxury hotel. Dinner is at leisure in the hotel tonight.

Day 17 : Colonial Mumbai

Begin today's discovery of Mumbai, India's economic powerhouse, with a visit to the famed Gateway of India, a regal arch built to commemorate the 1911 visit of King George V and Queen Mary during the British Raj; this colossal waterfront monument is sometimes called “the Taj Mahal of Mumbai.” Explore the city's Heritage area, including a stop at the Baroque-style train station known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) and Central Railway Headquarters building – Mumbai's only UNESCO World Heritage Site – resplendent with vaulted roofs, arches, Gothic spires, flying buttresses, gables crowned by neoclassical sculptures, stone carvings, and friezes. After an afternoon spent as you please in marvelous Mumbai, join us for a farewell cocktail reception at your hotel this evening.

Day 18 : Journey Home

Meals included: breakfast.

Tour ends: Mumbai. Fly home anytime. A transfer is included from The Oberoi, Mumbai to Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. Most international flights depart between 2:00 – 3:00 AM; you should allow a minimum of 3 hours for flight check-in.

Reviews from travellers on this tour, northern india and nepal.

OMG what can I say. It was all so exciting and wonderful from cold Delhi to warm Nepal to flying over Mt. Everest and listening to a Sherpa tell us bout her scaling the mountain TWICE! Tigers on the safari and a python too. A first for our driver too!! Lunch Box brigade in Mombai and "Bus Bazaars" all so much fun. Visiting a home and school and seeing the happy children who have practically nothing but eager to learn. And of course the cows all over. Holy Cow now I know where that phrase came from.

A memorable albeit demanding trip. Lots of firsts. Great people met and lots of sights seen. Biggest negative about the trip is the area covered is reasonably large so there is a fair amount of time spent traveling either by air, rail or or suv. Not much way around this, though if you want to see the sights! Seeing a tiger in the wild, the Taj Majal, Nepal (and the Himalayas), and the people we met.

Dick and Muriel

Spectacular experience in every way. A little concerned about the 4-star difficulty level, but even with iffy back, saw everything with no problem. As usual, wonderful accommodations and food, seamless connections and transitions, and wonderful hosts at every stop. Choosing the India trip with visit to Nepal is highly recommended. Seeing Mt. Everest up close; tigers, leopard, and rhinos; and a sense of Indian life were highlights. We lost a couple of game drives due to Holi, the national holiday. But, by far, celebrating Holi with the lodge staff and guides will be remembered most. So ready to return with granddaughters!! Would go next year if they were just a bit older.

Truly the Trip of a Lifetime

There is not enough space to describe how great this trip was. (1)memorable sights of Delhi (2)Nepal turned out to be an amazing place, with such a different culture and outlook, and of course rhinos in the national park! (3)Agra, views of the Taj Mahal from our hotel, and visits to the monument at sunrise. (4)monuments at Khajuraho! (5) Mumbai! Of all the many memorable moments, mine is perhaps a personal one. While touring Mumbai on foot, two of us got to join locals in a pickup game of cricket! Did you ever hear of that? But we saw tigers, rhinos, and crocodiles, and did a safari on the back of an elephant! Besides all of that, Nepalese culture was worth the whole trip!

Fantastic New Itinerary

The new itinerary with extended time in Nepal, including a jungle safari is fantastic. Getting to do a safari on an elephant was a great experience. All of the accommodations were outstanding and the meals were an excellent variety of local cuisine and quite interesting. The devastation and rebuilding after the 2016 earthquake were enlightening. Experiencing the people and their culture was the big WOW for me. Even more so than Mt. Everest, the Taj Mahal or three tiger sightings. But every day brought memorable moments. A big thank you to our Tauck tour guide and all the local guides.

India and Nepal

Outstanding trip, although not for the faint of heart or culturally chalenged! It was physically challenging with early mornings and long distances to reach the national parks. After 4 days on safari, managed to see only one tiger. Some in the group saw two. They are very elusive animals! Hotels second to none. Oberoi in Agra is a palace! Flight seeing the Himalayas. Taj Mahal and the Oberoi Amervalis in Agra. That hotel is a destination unto itself!

Northern India and Kathmandu

This is a long trip that covers lots of territory. The people, food and accommodations are excellent. Several days are spent traveling both by air and by private car which makes the trip onerous. And walking on the rough surfaces in Nepal can be trying. DO NOT take this trip unless you are physically fit! Am I glad we did it? Absolutely! It is difficult to pick just one; however, the most unexpected and pleasant was being rushed by the Indian teenagers in New Delhi and Agra to have their pictures taken with us. Their enthusiasm is contagious; and no they are not trying to pick your pocket.

This is a rigorous trip, and quite an awakening to another culture. Our tour guide Abi made the trip extraordinary. He was knowledgable, compassionate, and handled difficult situations with grace and humor. Too much time was spent getting to the national parks and looking for the elusive tiger. The rest of the trip was brilliant! Finally seeing the bengal tiger! Watching the guide and spotter get so excited when she finally appeared. And we got to see 2….the male and the female. And Mumbai and the lunch boxes was just like the movie. What a treat! And spending time with the sherpa who did the first ascent on Mount Everest…India was an awakening of what is possible!

lost opportunity

going on safari to see tigers rhino etc was the hook especially tigers. when we arrived for india safari we were supposed to have 5 outings. they scheduled a morning and pm safari on national holiday which closed everything so we lost 2 of them. it's important to have the full 5 to get chance to see the wildlife. they dropped the ball. we did manage to have one close tiger sighting.

This trip needs a lot of re working!!!!!!!!

People need to be aware that this trip is not as advertised. There are several long travel days. Some more than 7.5hrs in small suv's.The Tauck hand out that was given on tour states"each of these vehicles seats 4 people comfortably" This would only be true if your were small in size or had no driver.WHAT HAPPENED TO THE COACH AS STATED. The sights were very good as was the quality of hotels.
