Tourism event brings 5,000 exhibitors to Shanghai

The 2024 Tourism Plus Shanghai, a tourism-themed event will be unveiled on March 26, according to "Shanghaitourism", the city's official WeChat account releasing culture and tourism information.

Covering 600,000 square meters, the event will invite more than 5,000 exhibitors from some 30 countries and regions and covering 12 segments this year. More than 400,000 passenger trips of professional visitors from over 120 countries and regions are expected to partake in the expo, according to the organizer.

The event will consist of two separate exhibitions. One is an expo with a focus on hospitality, business spaces and yacht shows taking place at the Shanghai New International Expo Center in the Pudong New Area between March 26 and 29, and the other with the theme pavilion and an expo specialized on hospitality and the catering industry will be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) from March 27 to 30.

Initially launched in 2021, the Tourism Plus Shanghai is a global event on tourism industrial chain. In the past few years, the exhibition has developed into a comprehensive tourism event covering all related businesses including catering, hospitality, transportation, traveling, shopping and entertainment.

Tourism Plus Shanghai expo

A comprehensive travel and tourism expo called "Tourism Plus \r\nShanghai" will be held from March 29 to April 3 in Shanghai, its \r\norganizers announced during a news conference on March 18.

More than 5,000 exhibitors will showcase their products and services \r\nat the expo, which will comprise four different exhibitions that spans a\r\n total of 600,000 square meters in three venues in the city.

The Hotelex Shanghai exhibition featuring the hotel and catering \r\nindustry will be hosted at the National Exhibition and Convention Center\r\n (Shanghai) from March 29 to April 1.

The Hotel & Shop Plus exhibition, which focuses on hotel and \r\ncommercial space, will be held at the Shanghai New International Expo \r\nCenter from March 30 to April 2.

An exhibition on theme tourism and the Boat & Lifestyle Show will\r\n be staged at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center \r\nfrom April 1 to 3.

Cheng Hongmei, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal \r\nAdministration of Culture and Tourism, said, "This is the first time \r\nthat these four exhibitions are being brought together to form an \r\nunprecedented grand expo in the world's tourism industry.

"It covers 30 market segments in the industry chain and provides an \r\nideal place for people from different companies to find resources and \r\ncooperate with each other."

Jin Hui, vice president of the China Tourist Hotel Association, said \r\nthat the expo will bring new opportunities to the domestic tourism \r\nmarket as it continues to bounce back from COVID-19.

According to a report released by the China Tourism Academy in \r\nFebruary, 4.1 billion domestic tourist trips will be made this year. \r\nThese trips are expected to generate a revenue of 3.3 trillion yuan \r\n($511 billion).

(Yicai Global) May 30 -- The second round of the Tourism Plus Shanghai exhibition opened at the National Exhibition and Convention Center yesterday.

The expo, which runs till June 1, covers the food, home, transportation, tourism, shopping, and entertainment industry chains and helps to drive consumption, investment, and innovation in the sector.

The event has a special area for the G318 National Highway National Tour Exhibition, which aims to develop tourism along the 5,476 kilometer highway that runs between Shanghai and Tibet Autonomous Region.

A coffee festival being held in the theme pavilion has given businesses in the booming industry the opportunity to meet and talk, while more than 300 coffee shops offer special products to visitors.

New business links between travel destinations and major health sectors, including healthcare, insurance, elderly care, wellness, and Chinese medicine, are also represented at the expo.

The cultural tourism industry's recovery is driving the catering sector's development. “The momentum of this year's consumption recovery has boosted our sales and has also driven the growth in financial results at our supply chain platform,” a staffer from Summer Farm, an ingredients supplier to tea and beverage firms, told Yicai Global.

Tourism Plus Shanghai is a grand tourism industry event combining tourism products, hotel and commercial spaces, tourism facilities, catering facilities and food culture, transportation and outdoor activities, international competitions and forums.

It covers every aspect of the tourism industry chain and is a more than a tourism event, empowering the robust development of not only the tourism industry, but also radiating out to catering, sports, shopping and entertainment fields.

It will boost consumption and power industry investment and innovation, promoting the in-depth integration and innovation of the cultural and tourism industry, officials noted.

"The expo, with an expansion and upgrade this year, is expected to serve as an 'accelerator' of the high-quality development of cultural and tourism industry, an 'incubator' of new types of consumption scenes, a 'catalytic converter' of business opportunities and an 'ignitor' of the consumption market, boosting confidence and the development of the industry," said Fang Shizhong, director general of the Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism.

As the name Tourism-plus indicates, a cluster effect featuring the fusion of different industries is created at the expo, connecting tourism with catering, health and rural revitalization.

It's not the first time for Anouar Chetoui, chief representative of the Tunisian National Tourist Office in China, to attend the expo.

This time, the booth of the Tunisian office is even bigger.

"It is an important exhibition to us," he told Shanghai Daily.

"This event is a platform to connect people from the tourism industry and tourism is coming back," he said. "We see the smiles now so we are so happy.

"Tourism is recovering step by step, and we are optimistic about the full recovery of the market. We are here to work for the full recovery of the sector and to boost activities and connect."

Diversified activities

An international coffee food culture festival during the expo will bring together more than 300 boutique cafes to showcase their products, inviting coffee lovers to share coffee culture together.

At the 2023 Hotelex Shanghai Coffee and Food Festival, people can also taste ice cream and chocolates and experience a coffee cultural lifestyle in the bazaar.

Different types of fine wine will be featured as well.

The Shanghai International Wine, Spirits and Food Culture Festival will present a banquet of wine and delicacies as part of the expo, tempting the taste buds of gourmets.

It is more than a tasting event, as businesses are able to explore the development of wine and catering industries, with potential cooperation opportunities expected.

An exhibition about the G318 National Highway, the first exhibition about highway culture in China, is also part of the showcase, as well as a riverfront lifestyle festival and rural tourism resource display areas.

A banquet will be cooked up with an exclusive area for precooked food such as dim-sum and other dishes, and the coffee and tea section invites people to sip a cup of tea or coffee, some of which are making their debut.

At the intangible cultural heritage experience exhibition area, about 20 intangible cultural heritage items such as haipai (Shanghai-style) jade carving technique and paper crafts are featured.

A total of 13 competitions and 38 forums will be held during the event.

Baristas will compete in coffee brewing and latte art competitions, and chefs will challenge each other's cooking skills in another competition.

Bread baking and ice cream making competitions will be held as well.

The 2024 Tourism Plus Shanghai, a major expo cluster of the comprehensive tourism industry, started on Wednesday which featurs everything related to tourism such as lifestyle, watersports and delicacies.

The grand event is taking place at both the Shanghai New International Expo Center in the Pudong New Area, and the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) in Qingpu District. It will run through March 29 and 30, respectively.

The recruitment activity invites the public to participate in online discussions, recommend their experience at LEGOLAND®, and actively promote LEGOLAND® Shanghai Resort's role in fueling Jinshan to become a family vacation destination.

LEGOLAND® Shanghai Resort consists of eight major themed zones and a LEGOLAND®-themed hotel, providing visitors with immersive entertainment and accommodation experiences.

"Jinshan is in full swing in the development of the G320 cultural and tourism corridor in the north, and the construction of the resort is an important part of the plan," said Chen Zhong, deputy director of the Jinshan District Cultural and Tourism Bureau. During the expo, 26 giant cultural and tourism investment projects with a total investment of 117.5 billion yuan (US$16.25 billion) were revealed at the 2024 Shanghai Tourism Investment Promotion Conference.

This marked another step towards the city's goal of building an Asia-Pacific Tourism Investment Gateway, and is expected to further boost the development of the city's culture and tourism industry, and inject vitality into the cultural and tourism industry.

The projects cover haipai (Shanghai-style) and Jiangnan cultures represented by Expo Culture Park and L+SNOW, a snow-themed tourist resort, and fashion culture and tourism clusters.

As one of the three priority tourism events in the city between 2021 and 2025, the 2024 Tourism Plus Shanghai aims to improve tourist destinations, promote investment, consumption, and cooperation in tourism-related industries and thus empower the whole industry chain. It has been included in the Shanghai High-quality Tourism Project of the "14th Five-Year" Plan to help Shanghai become the tourism investment gateway in Asia.

It is estimated to attract more than 400,000 visits by professionals from 120 countries and regions.

"I think the outlook of the China market is very positive, just looking at the numbers of people attending the exhibitions here," said John Rishton, chairman of Informa PLC. "We have more plans to bring more exhibitions to Shanghai."

The 19th Tourism Plus Shanghai , Asia's leading tourism industry trade show, is scheduled to be held from March 30 to April 3, 2025, at Shanghai's top three exhibition halls. This year, the event will span 700,000 square meters and feature over 6,000 exhibitors, attracting more visitors than ever before.
