The Maldives is seeing a new push for sustainability, and the tourist sector is projected to rebound in the coming years following the worst downturn since the outbreak of Covid-19. President Ibrahim Solih praised the achievements of the tourism industry during his presidential address to the Inaugural Session of the Parliament.

Over 122,575 tourists arrived in the first month of 2022, representing a 43.1 percent growth over 2021. The figures suggest a favorable development following the re-opening of the borders, and the Maldives is one of the top nations to effectively continue tourism following the COVID-19 epidemic. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Maldives will be one of the top five economies in the world in terms of predicted growth in 2022. Based on this, the government predicts a 12% growth in Maldivian GDP in 2022 with 1.6 million visitors arriving this year.

This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Maldives tourism, and the Maldives will be commemorating the Golden Jubilee of tourism throughout the year. Currently, the Maldives has about 200 resorts, with approximately 10 of them that opened during 2021 and another 12 are set to open within 2022.

Tourist arrivals to Maldives by late-Jan 2022 exceed 100K

According to the latest statistical update from Ministry of Tourism the total number of tourist arrivals as of 26th January 2022 reached 109,842.

The arrival total by the review period observed a 48.0% growth compared to the corresponding period in 2021 during which the arrival total hit just 76,059.

Although arrivals to Maldives observed significant growth from 2021 to 2022, it is still noticeably below the arrival totals in both 2020 and 2019. As such, the tourist arrival for the review period is still 31.16% below that of the figure in 2020 during which the arrival total stood at 150,385.

On the other hand, arrival count for the review period is 12.93% below pre-pandemic levels observed in 2019 during which the arrival figure stood at 125,022.

Russia continues to maintain top source market spot since the current year started, with more than 20,000 Russian travelers already visiting the island nation. Statistics confirm that a total of 20,244 Russians, which is 18.4% of the total tourist arrivals to the Maldives so far in 2022, have arrived.

United Kingdom is currently the second strongest source market with 10,602 arrivals which is 9.7% of the total arrivals to the Maldives, India has bounced a rank up from fourth to third with 9,044 arrivals from the country so far which is 8.2% of the total arrivals.

Meanwhile, Italy is currently at fourth rank with 8,705 arrivals (7.9%) and Germany resting at fifth spot with 8,267 arrivals so far (7.5%).

Other major source markets to the Maldives include Ukraine (4.2%), United States (3.8%), France (3.8%), Saudi Arabia (2.6%) and Austria (2.2%).

Tourist arrivals increase 10.4% in 2022

Ministry of Tourism has recorded a 10.4% increase in tourist arrivals in November 2022 compared to the same period in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest statistics published in the Tourism Update Report 2022 released by the tourism ministry show that 43,687 tourists visited the Maldives during the first nine days of November, which is a significant increase compared to the 39,589 arrivals recorded in the same period in 2019. The statistics show that a total of 1.38 million tourists have visited the country so far this year which is an increase of 31.5% compared to 1.05 million tourists during the same period in 2021. It was also a 3.2% decrease compared to the 1.43 million tourists who arrived in the same period in 2019. The statistics show that 131764 tourists arrived in the Maldives in January, 149,008 visitors arrived in February, 150,748 visitors arrived in March, 145,280 visitors arrived in April, 125,522 visitors arrived in May, 110,889 visitors arrived in June, 133,561 visitors arrived in July, 131,862 visitors arrived in August, 111,986 visitors in September, 153,737 visitors arrived in October, and 43,687 visitors arrived until November 9. The statistics show that the highest number of tourists visited from India with 14% of the market share of 195,015 arrivals. The second-highest number of tourists visited from Russia with 170,821 arrivals, and the third-highest number of tourists visited from the United Kingdom (UK) with 151,358 arrivals. An average of 4,854 tourists arrive in the Maldives every day, according to tourism ministry. The government has set a target of welcoming 1.6 million tourists in 2022. The government also expects to reach this target by December 15 based on the current tourist arrival figures.

Male’, Maldives, 31st May 2022 – As of 25 May, the Maldives has welcomed 104, 046 tourists in May, exceeding the previous highest record for the month in 2019, set at 103, 022 tourists. The Ministry of Tourism expects the total number of tourist arrivals will be over 125, 000 by the end of the month. It took to Twitter to celebrate the news.

According the Ministry’s weekly tourism updates, there has been a 22.9% increase in arrivals from 2019 to 2022 for the month of May. This is a testament to how well the country is doing as a travel destination worldwide.

Interestingly, there has also been a change in the destination’s top markets. India has risen to the top position, ranking 1 st with 13.2% as of 18 May, whereas the previous top contender, the UK, has fallen to second place with 12.6% of market share. Russia has maintained its market position at third place, although there is a stark difference in tourist arrival numbers from before the Ukraine-Russia conflict and now.

The total tourist arrivals as of 25 May count at 680, 846 visitors. Although this is lower than the total number of tourist arrivals by the date in 2019 at 730, 753 tourists, the increase in arrivals in the month of May marks a change in seasonal tourism as it indicates the country is moving towards becoming a year-round travel destination.

The Minister of Tourism, Dr. Mausoom shared that the Ministry has considered the geopolitical climate (the loss of the China market and the impact of the Ukraine-Russia conflict) and adjusted their goal of total tourist arrivals for the year of 2022 from the previous 2 million to 1.6 million. This would indeed still be a great achievement for the Maldives, compared to the previous yearly total of 1.3 million tourists.

Maldives achieves a new record of tourist arrivals for May 2022. During the ongoing month of May, tourists arrivals has already surpassed 2019 May’s Record of 103,002 tourists and expects to exceed over 125,000 tourists before the end of the month.

India is currently dominating as the top market for Maldives tourism contributing nearly 13.6 percent market share followed by the United Kingdom coming in second with a market share of 12.5 percent.

According to the latest daily statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 1,180 tourist accommodation facilities are in operation this year including resorts, guesthouses, safari vessels and hotels. The total operating capacity is currently recorded as 54,852 beds.

This year, Maldives is also getting ready to celebrate an exceptional year, marking 50 years – the Golden Jubilee celebration of tourism in the Maldives.

Maldives tourist arrivals in 2022 exceed 2021 annual total

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the total tourist arrivals to Maldives so far in 2022 as officially exceeded 2021 annual tourist arrival total.

The ministry confirmed tourist arrivals to the island nation as of November 02, 2022 reached 1,354,828. Total tourist arrivals to the Maldives in 2021 stood at 1,321,937.

In annual terms, tourist arrivals in 2022 increased by 32.5% from January to November 02, when compared with the same period in 2021; during which arrival total reached 1,022,828. Despite this increment, tourist arrivals so far in the current year was still 3.4% below the corresponding period in 2019; during which arrival total stood at 1,402,626.

Meanwhile, daily arrival average in annual terms is at 4,428. The average duration of stay in annual terms is currently 8.1 days.

Top source market rankings remain unchanged. Moreover, arrivals from India is close to hitting 200,000 in annual terms. The source market rankings as of November 02 are;

Maldives ends 2022 with 1.67m tourists

A total of 1.67 million tourists arrived in the Maldives in 2022, according to statistics.

According to immigration data, the total number of tourists that arrived in the Maldives as of Saturday is 75,662 more than the tourism target set by the government last year. The tourism target set by the government last year is 1.6 million tourists.

In addition, the tourists who visited the Maldives last year are:

• 368,159 tourists more than 2021
• 1.1 million more tourists than 2020
• 9,347 tourists less than 2019

The highest number of tourist arrivals in the last 12 months was recorded in December. In December, a total of 184,044 tourists visited the Maldives which amounted to about 5,900 tourists a day.

PADI-Certified NASA Astronaut Brings Ocean Exploration to COMO Cocoa Island, Maldives for Exclusive Diving Event.

Luxury private island resort, COMO Cocoa Island, recently hosted an extraordinary “Island Astronaut Camp,” offering guests a unique chance to explore pristine dive sites alongside NASA astronaut and aquanaut Nicole Stott.

Shambhala Reef, known for its vibrant coral formations on a sloping reef top, is located between the resort’s arrival jetty and a nearby sandbank. Bay Reef, situated in a 12-meter-deep lagoon, boasts a thriving coral garden and coral propagation frames. Both reefs provided breathtaking backdrops for divers of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced adventurers.

As part of a captivating COMO Conversation event, veteran NASA astronaut Nicole Stott shared fascinating stories from her 104 days in space across two NASA missions. She discussed the rigorous training astronauts undergo and highlighted the surprising similarities between space exploration and deep-sea diving. Stott also spoke about her time aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and her underwater living experience in the Aquarius habitat, further emphasising the deep connection between the ocean and space.

Just a 40-minute speedboat ride from the capital, Male, COMO Cocoa Island offers 33 luxurious overwater villas, the PADI Cocoa Island Dive Centre, and holistic wellness treatments at the COMO Shambhala Retreat. Tourist Arrivals in Maldives on the Rise in 2023

The Ministry of Tourism in Maldives has reported that the country has received over 220,574 tourists as of 8 th February 2023. This represents a 31% increase compared to the same period in 2022 and a significant improvement from the 116,991 arrivals recorded in 2021.

The data shows that January saw 172,536 tourists arrive in Maldives, while the first week of February saw an additional 48,038 tourists visit the country. The average daily tourist arrival stands at 5,656 and the average length of stay in Maldives is 8 days.

Russia has emerged as the leading source market for Maldives tourism, with a market share of 13.1% and 28,873 recorded arrivals. India has risen to the second position with a market share of 10.9% and 24,127 recorded arrivals, while Italy follows in third place with 9.4% of the market share and 20,962 recorded arrivals.

The highest number of arrivals in a single day was recorded on February 4, with more than 6,800 visitors landing at Velana International Airport. The Maldives government aims to reach a target of 1.8 million tourist arrivals by the end of 2023 and successfully achieved its goal of 1.6 million tourist arrivals in 2022 on December 20.

China, which has recently lifted some of its COVID-19 restrictions, is now the eighth largest tourism market for Maldives with 7,018 recorded arrivals. With a diverse range of offerings and a thriving tourist industry, Maldives continues to attract visitors from around the world, making it a popular destination for tropical getaways.

The Maldives is poised for a successful year in tourism, with a significant increase in arrivals compared to the same period last year. With a focus on attracting visitors from around the world and maintaining a thriving tourist industry, Maldives is well on its way to reaching its target of 1.8 million tourist arrivals by the end of 2023.
