Another tourist following GPS drives down same ramp into water at Big Island harbor

tourist boat ramp hawaii

It was hard to believe it happened once. But for the second time in a month, a tourist following GPS in Kailua-Kona drove down the same ramp directly into the water at Honōkohau Small Boat Harbor.

This time it was a blue 2020 Ford Edge that went for a swim at about 7:45 p.m. on Monday.

Harbor worker Justin Pasamonte was washing a boat when he saw the driver take the same route as another tourist did on April 29 when she was following directions to a manta ray dive tour. That woman had to be rescued as water began to fill her car.

Pasamonte said the sole occupant of the vehicle on Monday got out safely without help.

“There was a boat that had just came in they threw her a float and got her up on his boat,” Pasamonte said.

Hawai‘i Island police responded to the harbor at 8:01 p.m. Police spokesperson Denise Laitinen said crews were able to remove the car.

The driver told police she was using GPS when it led her straight to the water.

Witnesses told Hawaii News Now the driver apparently thought the water was a big puddle. While her vehicle was slowly submerging into the water, a witness was surprised by the woman’s slow reaction.

The other tourist who drove into the water also moved slowly, with video showing no sense of urgency to get out.

Tourists rescued from sinking car in Hawaii harbor

Good Samaritans sprang into action to help.

Good Samaritans jumped into action to help rescue a pair of tourists who apparently followed their GPS directly into a harbor in Hawaii.

As first reported by the Washington Post , the incident happened on Saturday at the Honokohau Small Boat Harbor in Kailua-Kona, the west coast of the Big Island.

"I jumped into the water and got to the window and spoke to the driver," Sean Hutchinson told ABC News. "It was relatively deep the way they were drifting out. The weather was really bad."

The passenger made it out the window first, but the driver was still inside the car, video of the incident showed.

Other witnesses, including a trained rescue diver, sprang into action to help. The driver told them she has a heart condition and climbed onto the window edge, according to Hutchinson.

"We knew we had to try and get the people out, [that] was the priority," Hutchinson said.

After carefully helping her out of the car and walking the driver and passenger back up the boat ramp, the van began to sink underwater, according to Hutchinson.

Law enforcement has not commented on what caused the incident, but Hutchinson's wife Christie, who recorded video showing the Dodge Caravan and rescue efforts, said the area around the harbor is difficult to navigate.

"They may have gotten distracted looking for the manta tour that they were looking for and they were said that they had been following the GPS," she told ABC News. "I don't know the reasons for them going into the water. But it happened -- all we had to do was save them."

Tourists follow gps directions straight into sea: ‘one expensive vacation’.

You have not reached your destination.

A sailboat crew jumped into action to save two tourists out of their sinking van after they drove into Honokohau Harbor, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Video of the incident captured by local Christie Hutchinson shows the quick-thinking crew swimming up to the driver and passenger and helping them out of the silver Chrysler Town & Country through the front windows.

Meanwhile, another pair of men tied a rope to the back of the van, attempting to pull it back onto the boat ramp, but ultimately failed as it quickly became fully submerged.

“Pretty sure that wasn’t supposed to happen,” Hutchinson can be heard saying from behind the camera as she recorded for nearly four-and-a-half minutes.

Hutchinson later explained in a Storyful report that the crew of the Nanea sailboat had returned from a day of sailing when they witnessed the car drive head-on into the harbor beside them.

woman in drivers seat of van that is sinking in harbor

“The passengers were tourists trying to find a Manta Ray Snorkel tour company in the harbor and had been following their GPS directions when they took a wrong turn into the water,” Hutchinson said.

Online, viewers of the farcical footage have pointed out that “The Office” characters Michael Scott (Steve Carell) and Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) found themselves in a similar predicament in an episode of the NBC-aired sitcom.

“I just watched this episode of ‘The Office,'” one fan wrote .

“Michael Scott already did this episode,” another joked .

For many others, the incredible incident and subsequent report have left one pressing question unanswered: How does this happen?

“It’s as easy as looking out the windshield … What am I missing?” one asked . Mocked another, “So when you see water you still drive into it?”

“One expensive vacation,” quipped one savvy traveler. “Hope they got the extra coverage on their rental car.”

A visitor following drove a 2020 Ford Edge down the ramp at Honokohau Small Boat Harbor on Monday night. She told police GPS directions directed her down the ramp.

A tourist following GPS directions on Monday night drove her SUV down a ramp into the water at Honokohau Small Boat Harbor in Kailua-Kona.

The Hawaii County Police Department said it responded to the incident at about 8 p.m. Monday.

The woman had proceeded straight down the boat ramp in a blue 2020 Ford Edge into deep water, according to police.

Fortunately, the woman — the only one in the SUV — was able to get out safely without injuries, police said. She relayed to police that she was using a GPS that led her to take this route.

The vehicle has since been removed from the water, police said.

Drew Solmonson captured the moment on Instagram, saying that it happened after he had returned to the harbor following a fishing trip.

In the video, good Samaritans can be heard urging the driver to hurry and get out of the car before it took on water, and then to swim with the help of a float thrown her way.

This is the second time tourists have followed navigation directions down the boat ramp into the water.

According to various media reports, another woman and a female passenger drove their SUV down the same boat ramp into the ocean at the boat harbor a few weeks ago on their way to a manta ray excursion.

The moment was also captured on video, and good Samaritans can be seen diving in and assisting the driver out of the water before it sunk.

Police did not have details on the rental car companies or GPS systems used in both cases.

Tourists follow GPS, drive car into Hawaii harbor

A witness captured video as bystanders rescued the driver from the sinking van

tourist boat ramp hawaii

It was a normal Saturday on Hawaii’s Big Island for resident Christie Hutchinson and her husband, Sean. They had spent the day sailing on their boat, the Nanea, with their friends. It had started to rain, but they were about to haul the boat out of Honokohau Small Boat Harbor in the town of Kailua-Kona. Then a Dodge Caravan rolled down the boat ramp.

“I was just sitting there trying to seek shelter from the rain, and then the next thing, I saw a car drive directly past our boat straight into the harbor at a pretty decent speed,” Hutchinson said. “It was so confidently done, they didn’t have a look of panic on their face. They were still smiling.”

Hutchinson started filming a video of the incident with her phone as the tourists, who she says were two sisters, were already headlights deep in the gray harbor water, their windshield wipers still wiping. In the video, as rain continues to fall, you can hear Hutchinson ask aloud, “What ... is going on?” followed by “pretty sure that was not supposed to happen.”

The driver of the sinking car is shown sitting with her seat belt on. The front-seat passenger crawls out of her window and wades to shore, while the driver unbuckles her seat belt and tries to climb out of her window. Several men, including Sean Hutchinson, dive into the water and toss ropes and a buoy to attach to the van. Eventually Sean Hutchinson helps the driver from the car and carries her to the ramp.

“She mentioned she’s got a heart condition, and that’s why it took her so long to get out of the water,” Hutchinson said.

It didn’t surprise Hutchinson that her husband jumped in to help.

“He’s grown up in water his whole life surfing. He’s worked at boat docks,” she said. “I feel like that’s a natural response for him, so I was very proud.”

A local's guide to Honolulu

After the rescue, Hutchinson said, the tourists mentioned they had been following their GPS to find a manta ray tour. Seeing the Hutchinsons’ car parked on the ramp, ready to pull their boat out of the water, may have confused the driver. No matter the reason, the car was doomed shortly after making contact with the water. In the 4 minute and 26 second video, the car disappears below the surface. Hutchinson said the rescuers anchored the van so it wouldn’t float farther into the harbor and be a danger to boats. It was hauled out a few hours later by a tow crews, HawaiiNewsNow reported .

“It’s not the first time, and it probably won’t be the last,” said Ashley, a staff member of Manta Ray Dives of Hawaii, which operates from Honokohau. (She spoke on the condition of anonymity to maintain her privacy.) “Usually it’s more at night when it happens ... but this was a little bit before sunset so there was still plenty of daylight.”

Zoo seeks ‘outgoing’ workers to wear eagle costume and scare seagulls

The tourists were not Manta Ray Dives customers, Ashley said, but three of the company’s employees were part of Saturday’s rescue, helping provide equipment to the volunteers from other tour operators in the water. Honokohau Small Boat Harbor, which is on the west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, is home to several tours, including whale-watching excursions, scuba diving trips and catamaran charters.

While such accidents may have happened before at Honokohau, Samantha Tavares, information specialist for Hawaii’s Department of Transportation, said it’s “kind of rare” statewide.

“Usually GPS is pretty accurate in Hawaii,” she said. “It’s not exactly normal for that to happen.”

Ellen Edmonds, the director of external communications for AAA, said the federation does not have data on how often this type of incident occurs. But “based on our research, AAA strongly recommends having a vehicle escape tool in the event of an emergency,” Edmonds said in an email.

Car windows are made with either tempered or laminated glass, and standard escape tools can’t break the latter. It’s a good idea to know which your car has and have an exit strategy in case of an emergency. You could even test whether your escape tool works properly before driving. One way to do so is by tapping it against a piece of wood to see if it leaves an indent.

If you do get trapped in a car, Edmonds said, remember AAA’s S-U-R-E way out acronym : stay calm; unbuckle seat belts; roll down or break a window; and exit the vehicle quickly and move to safety.

Tavares also offered advice for tourists driving in Hawaii: “If you see a body of water, don’t drive towards it.”

Tourists following GPS directions mistakenly drive van into Hawaii harbor

KAILUA-KONA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A pair of tourists had a terrifying experience on Saturday evening when their van mistakenly ended up in the Honokohau Small Boat Harbor in Kailua-Kona.

According to witnesses, the driver and her passenger were buckled in their seats as water poured through the open windows of their Dodge Caravan.

The passenger was able to escape through their window, but bystanders had to jump in the water and pull the driver out and carry her up the boat ramp.

Good Samaritans said the tourists misunderstood GPS directions to a manta ray excursion, and their GPS led them straight into the harbor.

“I think they just must’ve taken their eyes off the road for a second, and I think everyone is a bit shocked because we saw this car go straight into the harbor,” said Christie Hutchinson, a witness to the incident.

“And it took us a second to figure out what was going on because they didn’t seem panicked or have any sense of urgency to get out of the car.”

Sources say no one was hurt in this incident.

Tourists in Hawaii followed their GPS and drove their car straight into a harbor: 'Pretty sure that was not supposed to happen'

  • A pair of tourists in Hawaii followed a wrong GPS route straight into a harbor.
  • Christie Hutchinson filmed two women trying to get out of a car partially submerged in the harbor.
  • "Pretty sure that was not supposed to happen," Hutchinson said in her video.

Insider Today

A pair of tourists drove their car into a harbor after mistakenly following GPS directions in Hawaii, and appeared confused when the car started filling up with water.

The incident happened on Saturday at the Honokohau Small Boat Harbor in Kailua-Kona, a region on the west coast of Hawaii, per The Washington Post .

A video by Christie Hutchinson, a witness to the incident, showed the two women buckled into their Dodge Caravan while it was headlights deep in the murky water.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Christie H (@thehutchess)

"I was just sitting there trying to seek shelter from the rain, and then the next thing, I saw a car drive directly past our boat straight into the harbor at a pretty decent speed," Hutchinson told The Post. "It was so confidently done, they didn't have a look of panic on their face. They were still smiling."

Hutchinson's video on Sunday shows the car's windshield wipers still moving as the car slowly tipped forwards, but the women did not appear to be panicking.

"And it took us a second to figure out what was going on because they didn't seem panicked or have any sense of urgency to get out of the car," she told Hawaii News Now .

"Pretty sure that wasn't supposed to happen," Hutchinson said in her video, while other witnesses shouted at the tourists to get out of the car.

Eventually, the tourists unbuckled themselves. The passenger climbed out through the window and waded out, while the driver sat on the window, seemingly unsure of how to escape.

The video also showed several men stepping in to try to save the women, and get the car out of the harbor. At one point, a man stepped in to help the driver get out of the vehicle, and onto dry land.

The video also captured the moment the car sank into the harbor — dipping into the water nose first, then disappearing beneath the surface.

Related stories

The video was later hauled out of the water by tow crews, per Hawaii News Now.

Hutchinson told Insider that the tourists told her their car was not insured.

She added that she believed that the tourists were sisters, but that she did not have any other information on them. However, no one was hurt in the incident, she said.

When on land, the tourists said that they were on their way to a manta ray tour, Hutchinson told Insider.

"There are manta companies directly on either side of the ramp and I can see how such a mistake could happen in heavy rain perhaps," she said.

Samantha Tavares, an information specialist for Hawaii's Department of Transportation, told The Post that the occurrence was "kind of rare" because the GPS directions are usually accurate in the state.

Tavares gave advice for tourists in Hawaii, telling The Post: "If you see a body of water, don't drive towards it."

The Hawaii Police Department did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment sent outside of regular business hours.

Hawaii Tourists Following GPS Directions Rescued After Driving Car 'Straight into the Harbor'

"Pretty sure that wasn't supposed to happen," said a witness who saw the tourists drive into the water

A vacation in Hawaii took a dramatic turn for two tourists when GPS directed them straight into a harbor, and they followed through with the directions.

The tourists were on their way to a manta ray tour in Kailua-Kona on Saturday when they ended up driving their Dodge Caravan into the Honokohau Small Boat Harbor, according to The Washington Post .

"I think they just must've taken their eyes off the road for a second," one witness, Christie Hutchinson, told Hawaii News Now .

Hutchinson was about to haul her boat in from the harbor after a morning on the water with her husband and their friends, when she saw the car suddenly head down the boat ramp and into the water, according to the Washington Post ,

"I was just sitting there trying to seek shelter from the rain, and then the next thing, I saw a car drive directly past our boat straight into the harbor at a pretty decent speed," Hutchinson told the newspaper.

According to Hawaii News Now, the pair were buckled into their seats.

Hutchinson filmed the van's descent on her phone. In the video (which she later posted on social media ), the smiling driver seemed befuddled but not particularly alarmed by what was taking place. "Pretty sure that wasn't supposed to happen," Hutchinson can be heard saying in the video while people around her shout at the women to get out of the vehicle.

"I think everyone is a bit shocked," Hutchinson said while speaking with Hawaii News Now, adding that it "took us a second to figure out what was going on because they didn't seem panicked or have any sense of urgency to get out of the car."

Neither woman, whom Hutchinson said were sisters, sustained injuries, per The Post . However, witnesses at the scene had to spring into gear to help the driver flee as the vehicle sank.

The passenger escaped through the windows while Hutchinson's husband helped the driver get out of the car and the water, the newspaper reported.

The vehicle was fully underwater by the time emergency crews arrived later to tow it out, per Hawaii News Now.

Samantha Tavares, information specialist for Hawaii's Department of Transportation, told The Washington Post that while these type of GPS mishaps have happened there before, they are rare.

"Usually GPS is pretty accurate in Hawaii," she told the paper. "It's not exactly normal for that to happen."

Captain Casey, Jenna, and Kayla made our experience better than we ever could have dreamed. I have recommended this to every stranger I've passed since on the island, because everyone should experience this at least once!"

Manta Ray Night Snorkel

Check it off of your bucket list.

Manta Ray night snorkel is a MUST DO while in Hawaii. It’s a lifetime opportunity to see up close giant manta rays at night feeding and interacting with other ocean creatures under the neon lights. Join us for a memorable and magical moment as we watch beautiful manta rays gracefully gliding through the water. (Option for those that do not wish to snorkel also available)

This schedule may be changed according to the weather, traffic and situation of manta rays.

What’s Included in The Tour:

  • Snorkel, mask, optional safety jacket
  • Snacks (chips, granola bars, juice and water)
  • Wetsuit top included
  • GoPro rental upon availability

What to Bring:

  • Swimsuit (Please put it on before departure), change of clothes
  • Warm long-sleeve jacket or sweatshirt
  • Motion sickness medicine (Most effective taking pill in the morning and at least an hour before the tour). It is tropics here and weather may change without notice. We operate on the open ocean and water conditions are not always perfect.
