The travel aid pass allows Leicester residents who are unemployed to travel by bus for half fare on local bus services in Leicester and Leicestershire.

Who is it for?

The travel aid pass aims to make both job seeking easier and ease the financial cost of bus use while you are unemployed. It cannot be used for train travel.

The pass is free and is valid for a two-month period (56 days). You must still purchase a discounted ticket from the driver or bus company to travel.

Who is eligible?

  • You must be a Leicester City resident.
  • You must be registered unemployed, and receiving Job Seeker's Allowance or Universal Credit as a work seeker.
  • You must not already have an active older persons or disabled persons concessionary pass.

How do I use my pass?

Only you are able to use the travel aid pass. It cannot be used by anyone else.

You need to show the bus driver both your travel aid photo card and the ticket part. The photo card is proof you are the official card holder. The ticket shows that it is linked to the photocard and the dates your ticket can be used between.

The driver will then be able to offer you a 50% discount on the fare for your journey. The pass does not entitle you to discounts on tickets of a longer duration.

If challenged by a revenue inspector or an official person, you should show both your ticket and both parts of your travel aid pass.

Please note, if you lose either of the passes, you will not be able to get a replacement. You will need to apply again.

How do I apply?

Before applying online, please do ensure you have the following items ready to upload as proof of your identity:

  • either your: passport, driving licence, birth certificate or proof of residency (document showing your name and address) and;
  • proof of your entitlement such as your Universal Credit or bank statement.
  • passport sized photograph of yourself (in line with passport standards)

How long will it take to process my pass?

Once your application has been submitted we will review all the information submitted to us and then we will post out the pass.

Please allow up to 28 days for us to process your application.

A SCHEME offering cut-price travel to unemployed jobseekers in Leicester has been relaunched.

The Travel Aid programme is open to city residents and means local jobseekers can get a 50 percent discount on fares on all Leicester and Leicestershire bus services.

People can apply through Leicester City Council’s website, and passes are renewable every two months.

Travel Aid was running successfully in the city before the disruption of the pandemic, but is being relaunched as work and life return to normal.

Staff at the city’s three JobCentre Plus sites are giving information to jobseekers about the scheme, which has issued over 60 passes in the month since it was relaunched post-Covid.

Travel Aid is part of a wider package of city council transport initiatives designed to support low income and disadvantaged groups, as well as helping existing workers to travel to work in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.

Other schemes include the Wheels 2 Work programme, where people can hire electric bikes, with an option to purchase them.

The Santander E-bike Share scheme, which was launched in June 2021, also includes a range of targeting initiatives giving discounted cycle hire for unemployed job-seekers, low paid workers and other disadvantaged residents.

Cut-price bus travel is also available across the city – NHS workers can travel free on the electric buses operating from the city’s three Park and Ride sites at Enderby, Birstall and Meynell’s Gorse, while concessionary bus passes can be used at peak times on other services.

Under 16s who qualify for free school bus travel can also travel free of charge on any bus throughout the week and weekend.

Leicester deputy city mayor for transport and the environment, Cllr Adam Clarke, said: “With working life returning to normal following the pandemic lockdowns, we are relaunching this scheme to ensure unemployed jobseekers can get help to travel on the city’s public transport.

“We’ve already issued more than 60 passes over the last few weeks to people looking for work, meaning travel costs are not a barrier to people who need to commute to interviews, training or other placements as part of their search for employment.

“This is just one of the many ways we try to support people out of work and on benefits in Leicester - something which is more important than ever in the current economic circumstances.”

Bus passes and concessionary travel

The English National Concessionary Travel Scheme is administered locally by Leicestershire County Council for residents of the county and Leicester City Council for city residents.

What is concessionary travel?

Concessionary travel passes can be used by eligible older and disabled persons for free or reduced rates of travel on local bus services in Leicester, Leicestershire and throughout England.

To use your bus pass on local buses within England, show your pass to the driver as you get on. If the bus is fitted with a reader, touch the reader with your pass. You don’t need a ticket to travel, but on some services the driver may give you a zero-priced ticket to record their passenger numbers.

You can’t use your bus pass on services:

  • where most seats can be reserved, like coaches
  • that run for less than six weeks, like shuttle buses to special events
  • for tourists, like open-top bus tours, or services on vehicles of historical interest
  • that are running instead of a train – ‘rail replacement’ services
  • where the fare includes ‘extras’, like refreshments or car parkingMany coach operators offer half-price travel for older or disabled people. Ask the coach company for more information.
  • To find out about eligibility for the scheme and to apply for a concessionary travel pass please use the link below that is relevant to you.
  • All Concessionary Pass holders travelling on Leicester and Leicestershire’s Park & Ride after 9.30am and all day Saturday are charged £1.00 for a Day Ticket allowing all day travel on Park & Ride services.

Transport assistance

Ukrainian guests hosted in Leicestershire as part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme are being offered a travel grant to support their travel needs.

The travel grant of £65 will enable the purchase of a short-term bus pass, or help with other travel costs when Ukrainian guests arrive in Leicestershire.

The travel grant is only available once for each guest, and only to those who have been hosted on the Homes for Ukraine scheme in Leicestershire and currently live in Leicestershire.

It will be paid on the same payment card system used for the initial Homes for Ukraine £200 welcome payment. New arrivals from November 2023 receive this £65 at the same time as their welcome payment.

A travel grant provides flexibility as it could:

  • be used on different bus routes, taxis, multiple single trips over a longer period
  • go towards the purchase of a bicycle
  • allow travel over an unspecified time frame
  • be better for rural areas where bus travel may not be an option.

A Helping Hand Along the Way

Travelers Aid International is an international network of social service agencies, airports and train stations representing a safety net to individuals of all abilities to connect with a support system or place.

TAI is committed to uplifting the human experience, using the skills and talents of a diverse group of volunteers and staff. Our programs share a combined passion and desire to create a culture of caring and support. We succeed when a family living on the streets gets a roof over their head, when a young woman escapes from a sex trafficking ring, when a hungry child can stop wondering where his or her next meal will come from, or when a traveler unable to navigate the airport alone receives a friendly guide. This ongoing challenge to seek a better life for those in need continues to motivate us — and we will always strive to be “A Helping Hand Along the Way.”

WE ARE ONE TRAVELERS AID working together...

The Heart and Soul of TAI

Although Volunteer Appreciation Month and all the events celebrating it are behind us, the simple truth that can never be said often enough is — volunteers are the heart and soul of Travelers Aid International.

The mission, vision, and dream of TAI cannot happen without the support, hard work, and dedication of the volunteers who serve TAI and its member agencies. Their commitment to TAI, but more importantly to the millions of travelers they assist day in and day out 365 days a year is what continues to propel Travelers Aid International upward.

~Ever with thanks~

Before you arrive

If you are travelling to the University from outside the UK there are many things to think about, but we are here to help make your arrival as smooth as possible.

Getting to Leicester from the airport

We would strongly advise that you book your flight once you have accepted your offer and you have obtained your visa or entry clearance.

Airport taxi

You can also book an airport taxi to pick you up from arrivals. We have negotiated a set price with Airport Taxis Narborough so you can be sure that you’re paying the correct fee for your journey (costs quoted are correct as of July 2024).

  • Heathrow Airport to Central Leicester = £140 plus £13 ULEZ charge from 29 August 2023. Plus any parking charges and bank charge if appropriate
  • Birmingham Airport to Central Leicester = £68 plus any parking charges and bank charge if appropriate

To book, please send an email to [email protected] with the following details:

  • University of Leicester course details
  • Arrival airport
  • Accommodation address in Leicester
  • Flight date, time and number

Airport Taxis Narborough will then respond with how to pay. Confirmation of your booking will be complete once they have received full payment for your taxi service. Please note there may be a charge to send payment from a foreign bank account.

Waiting time is charged at £18 per hour, which starts 1.5 hours after the flight lands unless instructed to arrive later than the estimated flight arrival time.

Ex-Aldi worker shares 13 insider secrets including best time to find reduced groceries

An Aldi worker has shared the things you never knew about the budget supermarket, including the best time to find reduced price groceries and just how to pack your bag as the cashiers whizz through your shop.

Aldi is well-known for its straightforward approach, affordable prices and high-quality products, making it one of the UK's favourite supermarkets.

The store's middle aisle is a treasure trove of incredibly cheap and highly desirable items, ranging from advanced tin openers to leaf blowers, and it's the kind of shop where you might go in for tea bags and leave with a kayak.

Emily Carubia, a former Aldi employee, has revealed 14 things that the average customer may not know about the budget supermarket, these include when to find the best discounts and special buys and how to pack your bag as the cashiers speed through your shopping.

All perishable food products nearing their sell-by date are reduced throughout the day, with up to 75% off. This includes bread, meat, and produce, while imperfectly packaged items like rice, cereal, and tinned food are discounted by 30%.

The best time to find reduced items is usually towards the end of the day, but you might find some before then too. Keep an eye out for the red stickers, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Unlike other supermarkets, Aldi doesn't group its red sticker items together, so you'll need to keep a lookout for offers scattered around the store.

Too Good To Go

What happens to all the reduced items that don't sell?

Aldi offers the Too Good to Go scheme - if a food item is nearing its sell-by date and hasn't been bought, it will be scooped up and put into a box full of food items with a value of no less than £10, but you can get it for £3.30. It's an excellent way to help prevent food wastage and get loads of great food for your money.

Specialbuys

The best time to grab Specialbuys is right when the store opens at 8am. Due to their limited availability, it's crucial to be prompt to avoid missing out.

Aldi's Specialbuys aisles

Aldi offers two days of Specialbuys: Thursday and Sunday. The colour of the signage above the aisle indicates which day they're available - blue for Thursdays, orange for Sundays.

These are typically located in the middle aisles at the back of the store. Stay updated on upcoming Specialbuys by following Aldi's Instagram page @aldispecialbuysuk or downloading the Aldi app.

Timing and Targets

Employees are not only expected to achieve a scanning target of 1,500 items per hour, but they're also timed on how quickly they can work through a palette of stock. This allows for frequent restocking throughout the day and helps the store maintain low prices.

There's nothing quite like discovering a great dupe. Something that performs just as well as your go-to moisturiser, boasting an equally impressive ingredients list, but for a fraction of the cost.

Aldi's hair and beauty Specialbuy items are truly top-notch. From Clinique moisturiser dupes to Dior lip oil dupes, the beauty products never fail to impress.

The ELEMIS cleansing balm dupe in Aldi

Plus, they're always at least half the price of the original product. However, make sure to grab them while you can - most items don't stay on the shelves for long. One Aldi employee praised the "amazing" tangle teezer brush dupe, describing it as feeling like a "feels like a head massage".

Don't overlook the flower section! The flowers are significantly cheaper than at other supermarkets and they have a decent lifespan. Just make sure to check their best before date.

Ever wondered why Aldi doesn't stock cigarettes?

This dates back to the 1960s when the founders of the store, German brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht, had a disagreement over whether to sell tobacco products.

This disagreement led to the chain being divided into two: Aldi North, managed by Theo, which sold cigarettes; and Aldi South, owned by Karl, which did not.

When they expanded internationally from Germany, they split the world's countries between them, and it is Karl's Aldi South that operates the Aldi stores in the UK. Consequently, unlike most of the traditional, large supermarket chains, Aldi stores in the UK do not sell cigarettes.

Best food dupes

If you're hesitant about trying non-branded items, here are a few Aldi products to start with. You might not even notice the difference.

Nutoka tastes almost exactly like Nutella - and it's a fraction of the cost. Belmont biscuit spread tastes just like Lotus Biscoff spread. A current Aldi employee told the ECHO: "I think the Racer bars are better than the real Snickers to be honest."

Best alcohol dupes

Aldi has built a reputation for offering splendid alcohol dupes at competitive prices. Capitalising on this success, the supermarket has extended its Wine of the Week promotion year-round.

Noteworthy amongst their offerings is the award-winning Haysmith's Rhubarb and Ginger gin, priced at only £14.99 and boasting a Gold Outstanding medal from the IWSC Spirits Awards. Equally impressive is St Germont Vodka, also £14.99, whose quality rivals that of the more expensive Grey Goose, currently tagged at £41.50 in Morrison's.

Pack after you pay

To facilitate quicker checkout times, Aldi encourages shoppers to pack their groceries post-payment, citing that this strategy allows them to keep hiring to a minimum and consequently maintain low prices for their customers.

Aldi has a number of alcohol dupes

Boxes for bags

In a clever tip shared with all supermarket goers, if you find yourself without a shopping bag, grab an empty cardboard box from the produce aisle. Many come with handles and are a sustainable alternative to plastic bags.

Electric price cards

Many Aldi stores are now fitted with electronic price cards that automatically update pricing information. This technology also indicates when an item is out of stock, saving customers time spent searching for unavailable products.

If this is the case, you can be certain that there won't be any additional stock in the back. However, if this message isn't displayed on the card, staff will be more than willing to check in the back for you.

Magnificent memories

This may no longer be the norm, but once upon a time, all Aldi in-store colleagues were required to memorise the prices and codes of 750 products. Although barcode readers now aid with this task, staff still need to remember the codes for many items, especially produce.

Constantly hiring

Aldi is always on the lookout for new team members. If you don't mind early mornings and a bit of hard work, it's a fantastic job opportunity. Perks include paid breaks, a pension scheme, and potential career progression. Find out more here.
