What's the Most Sanitary Way to Store Your Toothbrush?

Toothbrushes

Have you ever done your business, flushed the toilet, then stopped to ponder the short distance between the whirlpool of human waste and your vulnerable toothbrush on the counter? Or are you a proponent of storing your toothbrush inside your medicine cabinet for this very reason?

Either way, there are some interesting (and potentially off-putting) facts to know about different modes of toothbrush storage. Read on for an expert-informed exploration of the most sanitary home for your toothbrush.

Where to store your toothbrush

We could spend all day debating the scientific merits of various toothbrush storage locations. While it’s an interesting conversation, it’s probably not worth actually stressing about this. As long as you’re not storing your toothbrush in an obviously filthy place (like, literally on your toilet), you’re probably just fine.

“For the most part, it makes no difference where one stores a toothbrush,” Amesh A. Adalja , M.D., a board-certified infectious disease and senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, tells SELF.

That’s because we live in a world full of germs , and that includes your toothbrush—no matter where you keep it. “It is important to remember that [your] toothbrush will never be sterile, [because] whatever environment it is placed in will have microorganisms that will settle upon it,” says Dr. Adalja.

With that said, it’s best not to keep your toothbrush really close to your toilet. That’s not because it poses a serious threat to your health, but because it’s honestly kind of gross.

Keeping your toothbrush out in the open in your bathroom exposes it to a little something called toilet plume , Omai Garner , Ph.D., assistant clinical professor, section chief of clinical microbiology and director of Point of Care Testing in the UCLA Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, tells SELF.

If you haven’t heard of this phenomenon, you’ve been living in blissful ignorance. Toilet plume is the aerosolized cloud of microscopic particles, including urine and feces, that sprays into the air and onto surrounding surfaces when you flush the toilet. Experts aren’t sure exactly how far toilet plume can reach, but if your toothbrush is on the counter, it’s probably well within range. The closer it gets to your toilet, the more likely it’ll get spritzed with that plume.

While that's not a pleasant idea, it’s no big deal when it comes to your health, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). The organization emphasizes that although toothbrushes have been found to carry bacteria (including from feces), there is no solid proof that this will actually harm you.

Scientists don’t have evidence of loads of people actually getting sick from toilet plume, let alone from using toilet plume-coated toothbrushes. Yes, Garner notes that it is technically possible, especially if someone with a highly infectious illness like norovirus uses your toilet. Norovirus causes more food poisoning in the United States than any other pathogen, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That potency is one reason why a 2015 review of epidemiologic studies and lab experiments published in the American Journal of Infection Control notes that norovirus may present the biggest risk of airborne infection from toilet plume. It also takes very few particles to transmit this infection, and norovirus can live on surfaces for days or weeks . Again, though, this may pose a much bigger theoretical risk than an actual one. Overall, toilet plume is more of a disgusting thing to know about than something to worry about every time you pick up your toothbrush.

How to store your toothbrush

“Toothbrushes should be stored upright in an environment that allows for them to dry out completely between uses,” Mia L. Geisinger, D.D.S., M.S., associate professor and director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, tells SELF. That’s why medicine cabinets are generally frowned upon for toothbrush storage.

Hypothyroidism Symptoms Are Easy to Miss&-Here Are Some Clues to Pay Attention To

A small, sealed off medicine cabinet creates a humid enclosure that may theoretically allow pathogens to thrive since moisture is conducive to microbial growth (like that of mold and bacteria). But as Dr. Geisinger points out, similarly with toilet plume, there is no evidence that storing your toothbrush in your medicine cabinet is directly linked with negative health consequences.

What you do here really comes down to how much you hate the ideas of toilet plume and microbial growth on your toothbrush in a medicine cabinet. If neither of these scenarios bothers you, feel free to keep storing your toothbrush the way you always have. If both gross you out and you’re not sure what to do, you could change your toothbrush storage based on the situation.

For instance, you can keep your toothbrush out on the counter but institute a lid-down flushing rule, more for the sake of your mind than your actual health. In fairness, that would be a lot easier to communicate to someone like a partner than a one-time guest, new friend, or group of people hanging out at your place.

In those cases, you might decide to keep your toothbrush in the medicine cabinet for a short period, or to leave it on the counter but put a toothbrush cover over the head. That may impact its ability to dry out as quickly, which is why Dr. Geisinger is generally against these covers. However, she says, short-term use is probably OK.

You might even be so grossed out that you’d rather keep your toothbrush on a stand in your bedroom. It’s up to you. Overall, though, don’t let this take up too much space in your brain. You’re much more likely to get sick in other ways, like by picking up a virus on the job .

A few more ways to stay on top of your toothbrush hygiene

Instead of worrying too much about toothbrush storage, make sure you’re taking care of all aspects of toothbrush hygiene. The ADA has some pretty simple rules to follow:

  • Don’t share your toothbrush. Duh. You could swap pathogens.
  • Rinse it well after every use. Wash off any remaining food particles and toothpaste. (We can also personally vouch for the vigorous wrist-flicking method.)
  • Don’t let anyone else’s toothbrush head touch yours. If you store several toothbrushes in the same holder, the CDC advises not letting the brush heads touch each other.
  • Replace it at least every three to four months. Toothbrushes become less effective over time. Swap in a new one before this if the bristles become visibly frayed.
  • Skip the disinfectants and sanitizers. According to the ADA , there’s not a ton of research on toothbrush sanitizing. And the CDC recommends against soaking toothbrushes in disinfecting solutions or mouthwash, which might just provide more opportunities for cross-contamination. To avoid damaging your toothbrush, they also advise against trying to use microwaves, dishwashers, or ultraviolet sanitizing devices.

Wherever you choose to keep your toothbrush, prioritize these basic tips for oral hygiene, and you should be good to go. And, you know, toss your toothbrush if you drop it in the toilet.

A travel toothbrush is a travel gear essential for maintaining your oral hygiene on the go. It’s designed to be compact, easy to pack and just as effective as your regular toothbrush. With a travel toothbrush in your luggage , you can keep your teeth clean no matter where you are.

Thankfully, dozens of top-tier travel toothbrushes and toothbrush travel cases make maintaining dental care easier than ever. Before we dive into which are our favorites, let’s look at what you should look for in the ideal toothbrush for traveling.

What to look for in a travel toothbrush

Portability and size should play a major role in deciding what toothbrush is right for you. If you tend to throw a full-size travel cosmetic bag into your checked luggage , you can opt for a full-size toothbrush. But, if you pride yourself on just bringing a carry-on backpack with you when you travel, it might be better to go petite.

Foldable design

Speaking of petite, the ever-popular folding travel toothbrush is a fan favorite for a reason. The hinged design takes up half the space of a regular-size toothbrush without sacrificing ease of use when fully extended.

Manual vs. electric

If you already have an electric toothbrush at home , you might feel like a manual toothbrush just for travel feels like a downgrade. While electric toothbrushes are scientifically proven to better prevent tooth decay, if you’re planning a long-haul adventure, it might be more reliable to go with something that doesn’t require batteries or regular charging.

Dual voltage

That said, if you opt for an electric toothbrush, it might be worth looking into one that offers dual voltage. With this functionality, you won’t need to tie down a travel adapter or risk burning out your toothbrush when charging it abroad.

Antimicrobial

Shopping for a toothbrush with antimicrobial properties is key, especially if you tend to throw your toothbrush into the depths of your bag when commuting. Antimicrobial bristles hinder bacterial growth between uses, ensuring your mouth stays as healthy as possible.

Britsle type

Toothbrush bristles are available in soft, medium and hard varieties. Most people prefer a medium bristle variety, but if you tend to brush hard you might want to opt for a softer bristle to help protect your gums and enamel. Pay attention to the bristle type when picking out a new travel toothbrush.

FAQs about travel toothbrushes

What is the most sanitary way to travel with a toothbrush.

The most sanitary way to travel with a toothbrush involves several steps. Using a ventilated toothbrush holder that covers the brush head but allows air circulation to prevent bacterial growth is sometimes recommended by experts . Also, ensure your toothbrush is dry before packing it to reduce the risk of bacteria thriving in a moist environment.

You should try to protect your toothbrush bristles from contact with other items in your luggage by using a travel case or cover. While traveling, clean both the toothbrush and holder regularly by rinsing them thoroughly under hot water or soaking them briefly in antibacterial mouthwash.

When you reach your destination, allow the toothbrush to air dry completely outside of its holder. Some travelers prefer using a low-cost travel-specific toothbrush that they replace after each trip, which might be more hygienic.

Can I keep my toothbrush in a ziplock bag?

Ziplock bags trap moisture and prevent proper air circulation. That makes for an environment conducive to bacterial growth and could potentially lead to mold or mildew growth on your toothbrush.

Instead, we recommend using a ventilated toothbrush holder that covers the brush head while allowing for air circulation. If you don’t have a proper case, wrapping your dry toothbrush in a clean paper towel can be a temporary solution.

These inexpensive toothbrush covers keep your toothbrush clean when you travel. They're ventilated, which should help prevent bacterial growth if your toothbrush is wet when you store it in your toiletry bag .

$5 at Amazon

Further, keeping your toothbrush in a separate compartment of your toiletry bag can also help avoid contact with other items. The key is to keep your toothbrush as dry as possible between uses to minimize bacterial growth. If you must use a ziplock bag, ensure your toothbrush is completely dry before storing it, and leave the bag slightly open to allow for some air circulation.

Can you put an electric toothbrush in your suitcase?

Yes, you can pack an electric toothbrush in your suitcase, but keep a few important considerations in mind.

Battery-powered electric toothbrushes are generally safe for both checked and carry-on luggage. However, if your toothbrush has a lithium-ion battery, airline regulations require you to pack it in your carry-on . Most electric toothbrushes come with travel cases to protect them during transport and prevent moisture buildup.

Don’t forget the charger for longer trips, and check if you need a voltage converter for international travel. While electric toothbrushes are convenient, some prefer manual toothbrushes to avoid battery or charging issues.

Exploring the Best Travel Toothbrush Holders: Top 10 Picks

larisa author

Last updated on September 25th, 2023

travel toothbrush cases

Many doctors talk about the importance of keeping your toothbrush covered. They state that this way it will be protected from outside germs and bacteria. If we pay attention to the fact that a toothbrush is something that we use in our mouth, it’s essential to keep its hygiene.

Based on the rules of sanitation, it’s crucial to store your toothbrush in a travel toothbrush holder before exploring the world. There’s also a simpler way, which is buying a new toothbrush that is already stored in its packaging.

But imagine having short trips. It won’t be that convenient for you to buy a new toothbrush before each of the trips, will it? That’s why it’s more rational to use a travel toothbrush holder.

Features to look for before buying a travel toothbrush holder

Toothbrushes come in different shapes and sizes and picking a toothbrush holder that’ll make your travel experience more convenient is a real challenge.

When shopping for a travel toothbrush holder, there are some key features that should be under consideration if you want to make the right purchase.

Size and Portability

Is your toothbrush holder easy to carry in your travel bag? Does it have a travel-friendly shape that comfortably fits your luggage without taking too much space? Is it lightweight?

If your answers are “no” in a row, you should consider buying a new one and prioritizing these features.

Remember that the main reason for buying a toothbrush travel case is to keep your toothbrush clean. And if you buy a toothbrush container that doesn't have an easy-to-clean material, it will soon become not hygienic to use.

If you’re traveling alone, you’ll probably go on a toothbrush box that has a single slot. But if you have a partner with you, a toothbrush container with multiple slots is probably the best option to keep everything in one place and organized.

Easy to use

Before making a purchase, ensure that your toothbrush container is easy to open and close even if you’re in a hurry or have wet hands. Well-designed travel toothbrush cases provide you with immediate and effortless access to your toothbrush.

Price & Brand

You should also undertake a bit of comparison among toothbrush travel containers. By exploring different retailers and online marketplaces, you can get a better understanding of trustworthy brands. After reading several reviews, it’ll be easier for you to decide whether the price that’s mentioned is worth it or not.

Properly Storing Your Toothbrush While Traveling

What Is The Most Sanitary Way To Travel With A Toothbrush ? When it comes to maintaining oral hygiene while on the go, it's essential to ensure that your toothbrush remains clean and germ-free. Traveling exposes your toothbrush to various environments and potential sources of bacteria, so it's crucial to take the necessary precautions to keep it sanitary. Here are some tips on how to properly store your toothbrush while traveling:

  • Use a Travel Toothbrush Case: Investing in a travel toothbrush case is an effective way to protect your toothbrush from external contaminants. Look for a case that provides adequate ventilation to prevent moisture buildup, as damp environments can promote bacterial growth. Additionally, opt for a case that is easily cleanable to maintain hygiene standards.
  • Keep It Separate: Avoid storing your toothbrush with other items, such as toiletries or wet towels. By keeping it separate, you minimize the risk of cross-contamination and reduce the chances of picking up harmful bacteria from surrounding objects.
  • Allow Proper Drying: After each use, make sure to allow your toothbrush to dry thoroughly before storing it. Moisture can create an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, so proper drying is crucial. Shake off any excess water and store it upright in an open-air environment whenever possible.
  • Consider Disposable Toothbrushes: If you're concerned about the cleanliness of your toothbrush during travel, consider using disposable options. These convenient toothbrushes come preloaded with toothpaste, eliminating the need for carrying additional oral care products. Once used, you can simply dispose of them, reducing the chances of bacterial contamination.
  • Opt for Travel-Sized Toothpaste: To further enhance your oral hygiene routine while traveling, opt for travel-sized toothpaste tubes. These smaller containers are more convenient to carry and minimize the risk of leakage or contamination in your travel bag.
  • Clean Your Toothbrush Holder: Regularly clean your toothbrush holder or case to eliminate any build-up of bacteria. You can use mild soap and water or consider using an alcohol-based sanitizer for thorough cleaning. Maintaining the cleanliness of your toothbrush holder is just as important as keeping your toothbrush germ-free.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your toothbrush remains sanitary throughout your travels. Remember, good oral hygiene is essential for your overall health, so taking the necessary steps to keep your toothbrush clean and germ-free is vital. Incorporate these practices into your travel routine to maintain a healthy smile wherever you go. Safe travels!

Toothbrush Covers: How to Choose the Right One for Travel

When it comes to traveling with a toothbrush, one important consideration is how to keep it sanitary and protected from germs. One popular solution is to use a toothbrush cover, which can help shield your toothbrush from external contaminants and maintain its cleanliness. However, with so many options available on the market, it can be tricky to know which type of cover is the most effective for your needs. In this article, we will explore the different types of toothbrush covers and provide tips to help you choose the right one for your travels.

1.   Plastic Snap-On Covers:   These covers are commonly seen in travel toothbrush kits. They are designed to fit snugly over the bristles, forming a protective barrier. Plastic snap-on covers are lightweight and compact, making them convenient for travel. However, it is important to ensure that the cover has ventilation holes to allow for air circulation and prevent moisture buildup, which can promote bacterial growth.

2.   Travel Toothbrush Cases:   These cases are specially designed to hold toothbrushes securely and provide additional protection during travel. They typically have a hinged or screw-on lid for easy access. Travel toothbrush cases come in various materials such as plastic, silicone, or stainless steel. These cases offer more robust protection, shielding the toothbrush from external elements, and are ideal for longer trips or when traveling in bags or suitcases.

3.   Antimicrobial Covers:   Some toothbrush covers feature antimicrobial properties, which help inhibit the growth of bacteria on the bristles. These covers often use materials infused with antimicrobial agents such as silver or zinc ions. While these covers can provide an extra layer of protection against germs, it is still essential to thoroughly clean and dry your toothbrush before and after each use.

4.   Disposable Covers:   Disposable toothbrush covers are a convenient option for short trips or when you need to pack light. These covers are typically made of thin plastic and are designed for one-time use. They provide a barrier against contamination, but it's important to note that they may not offer the same level of protection as more durable covers.

When choosing a toothbrush cover for travel, consider factors such as durability, ease of use, and your personal preferences. It is also important to clean your toothbrush thoroughly with water and toothpaste before packing it, and allow it to air dry to minimize the growth of bacteria. Additionally, consider using a travel-sized toothbrush, as they are specifically designed for convenience and hygiene while on the go.

By taking these steps and selecting the right toothbrush cover, you can ensure that your toothbrush remains clean and germ-free during your travels, helping to maintain your oral hygiene while away from home.

Keeping Your Toothbrush Clean and Germ-Free While Traveling

When traveling, it's important to maintain proper oral hygiene, including keeping your toothbrush clean and germ-free. By following a few simple tips and practices, you can ensure that your toothbrush remains sanitary throughout your journey.

First and foremost, it's essential to pack your toothbrush properly. Invest in a travel toothbrush case or cover to protect the bristles from outside bacteria and dirt. There are various options available, including plastic cases, antimicrobial covers, and even biodegradable alternatives. Choose one that suits your needs and preferences.

Before placing your toothbrush in the case or cover, make sure it is completely dry. Moisture can promote the growth of bacteria, so it's important to allow your toothbrush to air dry thoroughly before packing it away. Consider using a towel or tissue to pat it dry if you don't have much time.

Additionally, avoid placing your toothbrush in a sealed plastic bag or container while it's still damp. This can create a moist environment where bacteria can thrive. Instead, opt for a case or cover that provides ventilation and allows the toothbrush to dry naturally.

When it comes to using toothpaste while traveling, consider using travel-sized tubes or packing small amounts of toothpaste in a leak-proof container. This not only saves space but also minimizes the risk of cross-contamination between toothbrushes.

Another useful tip is to keep your toothbrush separate from other items in your travel bag. Avoid storing it in the same compartment as your toiletries or personal care products. Residual moisture from these items can transfer to your toothbrush and compromise its cleanliness.

If you're on an extended trip or have limited access to clean water, using disposable toothbrushes can be a practical solution. These pre-pasted toothbrushes come with toothpaste already applied to the bristles and don't require water for rinsing. Once used, simply dispose of them in a waste bin.

Proper hygiene practices extend beyond storing and packing your toothbrush. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly before and after brushing your teeth while traveling. This simple step can help minimize the transfer of bacteria to and from your toothbrush.

Maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of your toothbrush while traveling is crucial for oral health. By packing it in a suitable case, ensuring it is dry before storage, and practicing good hygiene habits, you can greatly reduce the risk of bacterial contamination. Prioritize your oral hygiene routine even while on the go, and your toothbrush will remain clean and germ-free throughout your travels.

The Importance of Using a Travel-Sized Toothbrush for Hygiene

When it comes to maintaining oral hygiene while traveling, one essential item you should never forget is a toothbrush. However, not just any toothbrush will do. Using a travel-sized toothbrush is crucial for ensuring proper hygiene while on the go. Here's why:

Compact and Portable:   Travel-sized toothbrushes are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easy to pack and carry. They take up minimal space in your luggage or travel bag, allowing you to bring along other essentials without sacrificing cleanliness.

Hygienic Storage:   Travel-sized toothbrushes often come with protective cases or covers, ensuring that the bristles stay clean and free from potential contaminants. These cases help prevent the bristles from coming into contact with other items in your bag, reducing the risk of bacterial or viral cross-contamination.

Effective Cleaning:   Despite their small size, travel-sized toothbrushes are designed to provide efficient cleaning. Their bristles are just as effective as those on standard-sized toothbrushes, helping to remove plaque, food particles, and bacteria from your teeth and gums. By using a travel-sized toothbrush, you can maintain proper oral hygiene even while away from home.

Convenience:   Traveling can often disrupt our daily routines, but using a travel-sized toothbrush can help you maintain consistency in your dental care. With a compact toothbrush on hand, you can easily brush your teeth after meals or whenever necessary, promoting fresh breath and preventing dental issues such as cavities and gum disease.

Often Comes with Travel Kits:   Many toothbrush manufacturers offer travel kits that include not only a travel-sized toothbrush but also toothpaste, floss, and other oral care essentials. These kits are convenient for travelers as they provide everything needed for maintaining optimal oral hygiene while on the go.

Eco-Friendly Options:   If you're concerned about the environmental impact of using disposable toothbrushes, there are eco-friendly travel-sized toothbrushes available. These toothbrushes are made from sustainable materials and can be reused by simply replacing the brush head, reducing waste and promoting a more environmentally-conscious approach to oral hygiene.

Using a travel-sized toothbrush is vital for maintaining proper hygiene while traveling. These compact and portable toothbrushes provide effective cleaning, hygienic storage, and convenience, ensuring that you can prioritize your oral health no matter where you are. So, before embarking on your next journey, be sure to invest in a travel-sized toothbrush and make it an essential part of your travel kit.

Travel Convenience: Alternatives to Traditional Toothbrushes

When it comes to travel hygiene, one essential item that should never be overlooked is the toothbrush. However, carrying a full-sized toothbrush can be inconvenient and unhygienic during your travels. Fortunately, there are alternative options available that provide convenience and maintain the cleanliness of your oral care routine. Let's explore some alternatives to traditional toothbrushes for travel convenience.

1. Travel-sized Toothbrush:   Investing in a travel-sized toothbrush is a wise decision for any traveler. These toothbrushes are specifically designed to be compact and portable, allowing you to conveniently carry them in your backpack, purse, or toiletry bag. Travel-sized toothbrushes usually come with a protective cover, keeping the bristles clean and preventing the transfer of germs.

2. Disposable Toothbrushes:   Another option for maintaining oral hygiene on the go is a disposable toothbrush. These toothbrushes come pre-packaged with toothpaste, eliminating the need for carrying a separate tube. Simply open the package, use the toothbrush, and dispose of it after brushing. Disposable toothbrushes are lightweight, hygienic, and perfect for short trips or when you don't have access to a proper toothbrush holder.

3. Electric Toothbrush:   If you are a fan of electric toothbrushes, you'll be pleased to know that there are travel-friendly electric toothbrush options available as well. These toothbrushes often come with a travel case that protects the bristles and keeps the handle secure during transportation. Some electric toothbrushes also have a built-in rechargeable battery, eliminating the need for carrying charging cables.

4. Silicone Toothbrush:   Silicone toothbrushes are an innovative alternative to traditional toothbrushes. They are made from soft, flexible silicone bristles that are gentle on your teeth and gums. Silicone toothbrushes are easy to clean, as they are resistant to bacteria buildup. Additionally, they are compact and lightweight, making them an excellent choice for travel.

5. Toothbrush Sanitizers:   To ensure that your toothbrush remains truly sanitary during travel, consider investing in a toothbrush sanitizer. These devices utilize ultraviolet (UV) light to kill bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that may be present on your toothbrush. Portable toothbrush sanitizers are small enough to fit in your toiletry bag and provide an extra layer of cleanliness to your oral care routine.

Incorporating alternative toothbrush options into your travel routine can greatly enhance your convenience and maintain optimal oral hygiene. Whether you opt for a travel-sized toothbrush, disposable toothbrush, electric toothbrush, silicone toothbrush, or a toothbrush sanitizer, choose an option that best fits your preferences and travel needs. By making the right choice, you can ensure that your toothbrush remains clean, germ-free, and ready to use wherever your travels take you.

When it comes to traveling with a toothbrush, maintaining proper hygiene and cleanliness should be a top priority. By following the guidelines discussed in this article, you can ensure that your toothbrush remains sanitary and germ-free throughout your journey.

First and foremost, it is essential to store your toothbrush properly while traveling. A toothbrush holder or case that allows for proper ventilation and keeps the bristles protected is crucial. This will prevent the build-up of moisture and bacteria on your toothbrush. Additionally, storing your toothbrush in a separate compartment or zip-lock bag in your toiletry kit will further protect it from any potential contaminants.

While there are various types of toothbrush covers available on the market, their effectiveness can vary. It is important to choose a cover that allows for air circulation and prevents the growth of bacteria. Caps with ventilation holes or containers with built-in drying mechanisms are recommended. Remember to remove the cover once you reach your destination to allow the toothbrush to air dry properly.

To maintain the cleanliness of your toothbrush while on the go, there are a few essential tips to keep in mind. Rinse your toothbrush thoroughly after each use and allow it to air dry before storing it. It is also advisable to avoid sharing toothbrushes with others, as this can lead to the transfer of germs and bacteria. If you need to replace your toothbrush during your travels, opt for a travel-sized version to ensure proper hygiene.

Using alternative options to traditional toothbrushes can also provide convenience and hygiene benefits while traveling. Disposable toothbrushes, pre-pasted toothbrushes, or even travel-sized electric toothbrushes can be excellent alternatives. These options eliminate the need for carrying toothpaste or worrying about brush head contamination. They provide a convenient and sanitary way to maintain oral hygiene on the go.

Practicing proper toothbrush storage, choosing effective covers, maintaining cleanliness, and selecting the right toothbrush for travel are all crucial for ensuring optimal hygiene. By implementing these recommendations, you can travel with peace of mind, knowing that your toothbrush is sanitary and germ-free. Prioritizing dental health while on the go contributes to overall well-being and contributes to a healthy and confident smile.

Toothbrush holder

We brush our teeth twice a day (hopefully), and whether it’s with an eco-friendly toothbrush or an electric toothbrush we’re gonna toss it back into some kind of holder when we’re done — and probably never think about it again until the next time we’re brushing.

You know what doesn’t forget about that holder and its slowly growing collection of water and residue at the bottom? Bacteria.

The best toothbrush holder not only keeps the toothbrush head from rolling around in cabinets or on countertops, but it works to keep your brush from creating more dirt and mildew. Besides, who doesn’t like a pop of style every time you walk into the bathroom ? SPY has compiled a list to help you choose the best toothbrush holder that will add style, organization and hygiene to your routine.

(You floss  too, right? Just checking!)

What to Consider in the Best Toothbrush Holders

  • Type : Removable bottoms or a drainage system can stop mildew and mold from developing. Likewise, covered holders can prevent germ exposure. While single-compartment holders are more affordable, ones with independent compartments can keep multiple toothbrush heads from touching.
  • Material : Try to opt for materials that won’t rust, like porcelain, stainless steel or bamboo. Plastic alternatives are inexpensive and lightweight, making them suitable options as well.
  • Capacity : If you have more than two people sharing the same bathroom, consider a wall-mounted option, a larger cup or a toothbrush stand to hold multiple brushes.

1. Joseph Joseph Toothbrush Holder

Available in small and large sizes, this toothbrush holder from Joseph Joseph checks all our boxes with its features. What’s the Most Sanitary Way to Store Your Toothbrush?

  • June 6, 2022

travel toothbrush holder sanitary

DISCLOSURE: Noelle Copeland RDH is the oral care specialist and dental consultant to the Brilliant and Baby Buddy oral care lines through Compac Industries. See terms below.

This is a great question and one I wish more people would ask. Think about this, your toothbrush goes inside your mouth… and what’s inside your mouth? Germs! Leftover food! Bacteria! And sometimes viruses and  fungus. When you say it out loud like that it sounds really gross! Well you know what else is gross? The way some people take care of their toothbrushes or should I say the way some people don’t take care of their toothbrushes.

The sanitary way…What you SHOULD do…

  • Before starting your oral care routine, start with clean hands, washing them with warm soapy water.
  • Take your toothbrush and wet the bristles with warm water to soften them.
  • Place a small amount of tooth gel onto the bristles and begin to brush your teeth. You don’t need a long swirly slab of gel. A pea-sized amount is plenty.
  • Spit out saliva and tooth gel build up every 30 seconds as you brush while cleaning your teeth and gums.
  • When you have completed at least 2 minutes of brushing, spit and rinse your mouth well.
  • Now rinse the toothbrush bristles with warm water while using a clean thumb to apply a little pressure, while rubbing against the bristles, helping to dislodge any stuck food, stain or debris.
  • Also be sure to clean the brush handle of any dripped paste. This keeps paste build up at bay so the handle doesn’t get crusty spots that trap germs.
  • Tap off excess water on the edge of the sink, removing as much as you can.
  • Store toothbrush upright, not lying down, either inside of a cabinet or underneath the sink in a closed cabinet. Be sure that air can fully circulate around the brush head so that it can completely air dry, you don’t want the bristles to retain any moisture.
  • Replace your toothbrush at least every 3 months or sooner if needed. Always replace your toothbrush after recovering from an illness.

The unsanitary way…. What you should NOT DO

  • Don’t bite, suck, chew, or gnaw on your toothbrush, this damages the bristles and causes micro tears and abrasions that can trap and harbor more bacteria into the fibers of the brush and the handle.
  • Don’t store your toothbrush on the counter of your bathroom if possible. Your toothbrush is exposed to bathroom air and the elements that float around in the air of a bathroom, like the spray from a flushed toilet, called toilet plume, or the mist from an air freshener or cleaning product.
  • Don’t let your toothbrush sit in a puddle of water on the side of the sink, remember it has to air dry, upright.
  • Don’t leave stain, food, or toothpaste in the bristles.
  • Don’t share your toothbrush with anyone, even your significant other and especially not your children. Whatever bacteria or viruses are in your mouth or on your toothbrush are easily transferred to someone else from a toothbrush.
  • Don’t let your toothbrush touch someone else’s toothbrush when put away for drying. Each should have its own slot or holder.
  • Make sure the toothbrush holder stays clean. If it’s a cup, regularly change it out and run it through the dishwasher.
  • Don’t keep a toothbrush for too long, replace your toothbrush at least every 3 months.
  • Do not keep a brush head covered with a travel cap or inside a travel case. Air should be able to circulate freely and easily on a daily basis. Travel containers are meant for traveling and not designed for everyday use.

Should you sanitize your toothbrush?

A toothbrush is not sterile and cannot become sterile and I think people confuse sanitize with sterilized. So that’s one reason I get asked this question a lot and it bears some needed explanation. So thats the first thing to comprehend, the second thing to comprehend is that keeping your toothbrush clean on a daily basis as I outlined above is a sanitizing process, so sanitizing your toothbrush is something you should do everyday, with a regular, clean, oral care routine.

Sanitizing refers to the action of reducing microorganism and bacteria exposure down to a safe level, this is done by removing potential contaminants, (like food, paste, or toilet flume exposure spray) that can sit on toothbrush bristles and proliferate.

In all actuality, you need to sanitize your toothbrush everyday by following the directions under “ The sanitary way…What you SHOULD do” above.

Extra ways to keep it clean

However, If you need a little extra cleaning help- say you just bought a more expensive toothbrush and you accidentally dropped it on the floor or somehow contaminated it unintentionally some other way.

  • You may soak the brush head in a mug of hot water, baking soda, and vinegar for 10-15 minutes and this will add extra cleansing support instead of throwing away an almost new toothbrush.

Another option…

  • Use a little mouthwash as a soaking solution for the brush head, again, for 10-15 minutes and only on occasion, not on a daily basis.

It stands to be said that any solution you use to soak anything that goes into your mouth should be discarded after each individual use, never reuse a soaking solution for multiple sessions. Keep in mind that this may damage the bristles of your toothbrush, depending on the design and quality of the bristles, so use at your own risk.

What does the American Dental Association say?

The ADA says “There is insufficient clinical evidence to support that bacterial growth on toothbrushes will lead to specific adverse oral or systemic health effects. Read more about that here https://www.ada.org/en/member-center/oral-health-topics/toothbrushes

  • However…. Some of us like to be “EXTRA”, so following the guidelines above are not only considered safe but recommended by many in the oral care industry when needed.

Special Needs advice

If you have a special needs child or adult in your life, I realize the information above can be overwhelming to adhere to. You probably use a much more expensive specialty toothbrush or some other version of the best toothbrush for kids or adults that you can get your hands on.

Making their oral care regular and routine is usually the number one hurdle in special needs oral care. So start there and ask for help. There is a struggle often encountered between the caretaker performing the oral care and the special needs person wanting to do their own oral care. When it comes to these challenges the best strategy is to “Do Your Best” and don’t worry about what you can’t do.

I do recommend for you to have a close relationship with your loved ones dental hygienist and dentist, because they will be more than happy to come alongside you in finding the best way to safely and hygienically perform oral care at home.

Special needs oral care routines often struggle with:

  • The Toothpaste : They either love it or they hate it. If they love it, use it, but be sure it’s monitored and you are the one dosing it out in small amounts and that they are spitting out as much of it as they possibly can. If they hate it, don’t use it. Wet the bristles with warm water and brush without it. However, they will most likely need some other form of plaque and fluoride control if you cannot use toothpaste. Swabs around the mouth with fluoride or xylitol containing mouth rinse may be used, or other at home treatments can be used as prescribed by your dental professional. If this is something you struggle with, talk to your dentist about it today.
  • The Toothbrush bristles : If sensory stimulation is a hurdle for your homecare routine then starting out with extra fine bristles is usually best. Once your loved one has adapted to the extra fine bristled toothbrush being used daily, then you can graduate to the next level of fineness, most likely a sensitive or special soft toothbrush and repeat the process until you can acclimate your loved one to the feeling and stimulation of a regular soft toothbrush . This may not always be possible but it should be at least “attempted”. Using anything harder than a soft toothbrush is not recommended.

If your special needs loved one can perform their own oral care you still want to be sure you are directly supervising them and watching their routine. This allows you to correct any activities that may adversely contaminate the oral environment or the toothbrush itself and helps prevent any accidental injury.

Oral care is important for everyone! Talk to your dental professional about any challenges you may encounter or questions you may have and remember to brush Brilliant®.

How to Store Your Toothbrush Safely

Medically Reviewed By Colgate Global Scientific Communications

Two brushes in the glass brush holders

Toothbrushes need to be maintained so they can remove plaque to help keep teeth and gums healthy. Toothbrush storage is vital for maintaining cleanliness for your oral care. Read these tips for storing your toothbrush at home and while traveling so that your toothbrush can work hard to help you keep your mouth healthy.

Use holders made for toothbrushes

The best way to store your toothbrush is to use a holder made for this purpose. Do not use random household items like plastic bags, pieces of toilet paper, or foil. Toothbrush holders will have air holes to ensure proper drying, and they will not damage the bristles as makeshift covers do.

Let your toothbrush dry completely

Air is essential for toothbrushes. You may assume that keeping tight covers on your toothbrushes or hiding them away in a cabinet or drawer keeps them away from bacteria. However, if there isn't enough air to dry your toothbrush, it may grow more bacteria stored in a damp area. Cabinets or drawers can be good places to store them as long as there is enough air to dry it after use.

How to store toothbrush when traveling

Before you go on a trip, invest in a travel toothbrush cap or a portable holder to keep the toothbrush head protected from other items in your travel bag. However, don't store the toothbrush forever like this. A toothbrush builds up bacteria even if it isn't used frequently. Every toothbrush, travel or not, needs to be replaced every three months.

Where should you keep your toothbrush holder?

Keep your toothbrush holder away from the toilet and sink. Did you know that flushing the toilet can create an aerosol effect, spraying germs through the air? Shutting the toilet lid can help, but keeping toothbrushes as far away from the toilet as possible can reduce the amount of bacteria that may land on them.

Keeping toothbrushes away from the sink can also keep them more sanitary. When you use the sink to wash, water, soap, and bacteria can splash on your toothbrushes. Find a good place away from the toilet and as far away from splashing water as you can. You can invest in a wall-mounted toothbrush holder or a holder with a lid (as long as there is enough airflow to dry the toothbrush!) or use the medicine cabinet.

Don't share toothbrushes

Ensure that each family member has their unique toothbrush, so you don't mistake another toothbrush for yours! Even toothbrushes that are cleaned frequently shouldn't be used among multiple people because it increases infection risk . Store toothbrushes away from each other too, so bacteria can't spread across toothbrushes.

Clean your toothbrush holder frequently

Clean your toothbrush and your toothbrush holder frequently. Regularly cleaning them will clear your items from dust, germs, and dried toothpaste. Depending on the holder, you could put it in the dishwasher, wipe-down with sanitizing wipes, or use soap and water.

Remember keeping your toothbrush clean helps your oral care as well. The most sanitary way to store your toothbrush is to keep the toothbrush in a clean holder where airflow can dry the toothbrush. Yet, it won't be contaminated by bathroom germs. Maintaining your toothbrush, storing it in a sanitary way, and cleaning your toothbrush's holder will prevent bacteria buildup and won't damage the bristles.

The 10 Very Best Toothbrush Holders

A row of electric toothbrushes or a Jenga-like tower of the manual kind can make a mess of your bathroom real estate. A toothbrush holder will restore some order with a spot for a tube of Colgate and even a backup brush (in case you forgot to charge your Sonicare). But because it’s often in situ on the sink, you’ll want one that’s aesthetically sound while playing the functional part well.

So I set out to find the very best (and best-looking) toothbrush holders. As antiques dealer Erica Weiner says, “Anything can wrangle a toothbrush, really.” That rang true in the making of this guide: I heard from store owners, interior designers, and prop stylists about their (sometimes) improvised solutions, like organizer Laura Cattano recommending lassi cups and Catbird chief creative officer Leigh Plessner using an old Moroccan tea glass. But I also heard about many “official” toothbrush holders — read on for sculptural stands, practical wall-mounts, and whimsical alternatives.

What we’re looking for

Toothbrush holders come in many materials, including ceramic, glass, plastic, and even silicone. Porcelain was one of the most popular among those I talked to for its durability and clean aesthetic (and according to interior designer Betsy Burnham , “The same goes for natural stone” like marble, limestone, and the occasional onyx). Glass was another favorite, despite its fragility.

Design details

Toothbrush holders are usually simple, design-wise. But there’s often a standout feature that makes you think, That’s the one . Maybe it has an etched edge or a chinoiserie pattern. Perhaps there’s space for a whole family’s worth of toothbrushes or removable parts to make cleaning easier. I noted these design details for each of the recommendations below.

The measurements for each toothbrush holder below are listed either in diameter by height or length by diameter by height.

Best overall toothbrush holder

Muji Porcelain Toothbrush Stand

Material: Porcelain | Design details: Center opening for a single toothbrush | Size: 1.6” x 1.2”

The best-in-class blue ribbon goes to Muji , which came up the most in interviews for this guide. The minimalist Japanese label makes everything from brooms to boy shorts that have the Strategist seal of approval, and two staffers favor this straightforward toothbrush stand. The squat porcelain ring holds a single brush upright and earned marks for aesthetics, functionality, and durability — some folks I talked to have had theirs for years . Strategist writer Erin Schwartz told us the company’s stoneware is “solid across the board,” and this stand is no exception. (It sometimes sells out, so here’s a respectable dupe that comes in a two-pack for around the same price per piece.)

Liz Lipkin of Liz Lipkin Interiors likes that Muji’s design is almost not noticeable, takes up very little space, and is easy to clean: “Once a week I’ll give it a swipe inside and out as I’m cleaning the sink,” Lipkin says. Coming Soon co-owner Fabiana Faria keeps hers on a shower ledge, with “water just running through it.” Its plainness is a big part of the appeal. New York features editor Katy Schneider says the stand has a “really quite charming” effect in her “dreary” bathroom. Schwartz compared it to an octopus sucker, while Wall Street Journal photo editor (and illustrator) Alexandra Citrin-Safadi calls hers a “little porcelain doughnut.” Citrin-Safadi adds: “It’s so precious; the seat of power your toothbrush deserves.” Though it’s made to match a series of Muji-branded toothbrushes (which craft stylist–slash–ceramicist Kate Parisian always has on hand for their simplicity and small bristles), it will hold other manual brushes that you’re already loyal to (Lipkin’s, for example, holds an Oral-B).

Best toothbrush holder for the shower

XoYoZo Silicone Toothbrush Holder

Material: Silicone | Design details: Four flexible prongs to hold a single toothbrush; mounts to the wall with included adhesive | Size: 1.38” x 1.38” x 1.38”

Ngaio Parr , creative director and Some Things newsletter writer, stuck these cheap knobby hooks in both her shower and medicine cabinet. “Neurodivergent folks often have trouble with routine tasks,” Parr explains, adding that having a toothbrush and toothpaste within reach (and in two spots instead of just one) has helped with her dental habits. These are unobtrusive and come in five colors (black, white, green, pink, and purple), and there are four in a pack. There’s an adhesive sticker on the back of each one to mount them to the wall — Parr attached one to her shower tile and says that as long as the surface is clean and dry when you’re installing, they’ll stay securely in place.

Best open-concept toothbrush holder

Sin Buoy Toothbrush Holder

Material: Stoneware | Design details: Open-air design; can hold multiple brushes | Size: 3” x 1.75” x 5.25”

Prop stylist, set decorator, and designer Marina Bevilacqua turned me onto the Buoy by Brooklyn–based Sin (the brand’s founder, Virginia Sin, designed the porcelain paper plates used at famed Flatiron restaurant Eleven Madison Park ). Since hand soap is the only other thing on her bathroom counter, Bevilacqua wanted her toothbrush holder to be “simple while still feeling interesting and pleasing to look at.” The architectural aesthetic of the Buoy won out, and now she’s been using it for more than three years. “It has held up fabulously,” she says. “I’d say it’s as good as new.” Since the sides are open, the holder doesn’t hold in moisture or get too gross: “I’m really only wiping off a bit of toothpaste splatter,” Bevilacqua adds. It comes in black or white (the gray is sold out), and Bevilacqua went with the black “to break up the airiness” of her bathroom, which features a cream-colored shower curtain and waffled white towels .

Best high-design toothbrush holder

Degen Face Vessel (Medium)

Material: Handblown glass | Design details: Smiley face splatter pattern, can hold multiple brushes | Size: 1.75–2” x 2-3” (small), 2.25–2.75” x 3-4” (medium), 2.5–3” x 4-5” (tall)

The Face Vessels from design label Degen are a favorite of the Coming Soon crowd; each is one of a kind, handblown by glassmaker Neal Drobnis . “To be honest, it’s hard not to try to keep every Face Vessel that comes to the store,” Faria admits. That’s why she started using one as a second toothbrush holder (in addition to the Muji that took the “best overall” title): “I thought any extra use I can get out of them is a great excuse to collect another one.” It stands on a floating shelf beside her sink, fitting right in with a whimsical toilet-paper holder from Katie Stout , Dusen Dusen striped towels , and Cold Picnic’s Tushy bath mat . “They’re always smiling at you and a good reminder to brush your teeth,” she says. And while the Face Vessel is glass, it’s strong enough that Faria can run it through the dishwasher. (An honorable mention for a similarly cheerful toothbrush-corralling vessel comes from Kelsey Keith , brand creative director for Herman Miller , who uses a now-decade-old Splatter Mug by artist Peter Shire : “It was a pretty ad hoc arrangement, chosen so that we would have something beautiful to look at during a quotidian moment.”)

Best decorative toothbrush holder

Kassatex Orsay Toothbrush Holder

Material: Porcelain | Design details: French toile-inspired pattern, double opening for multiple brushes | Size: 2.83” x 4.06”

Burnham’s line of work often leads to “installing a house” by arranging furniture and adding finishing touches. Kassatex, which is headquartered in the Garment District, is one of her favorite dealers for all things bath related. Its accessories come in an assortment “ranging from organic to manicured,” with each item feeling high quality and “very upscale.” For a recent guest-bath renovation that involved marble countertops and subway tiles, Burnham selected the company’s Orsay collection , which is “reminiscent of timeless chinoiserie.” She bought the matching wastebasket , tissue cover, tray, and toothbrush holder, and reports that they are “durable, fade-free, and easily cleaned. Win-win.”

To get a similar look, Weiner also recommends looking for old Transferware, which is easy to find on Etsy . Weiner owns several pieces, including a mismatched collection of charming French storytelling plates (called assiettes parlantes , “talking plates”) and Napoleonic-era ones that have lasted through “countless washings in the dishwasher,” even though they were made before the advent of dishwashers. She uses a Transferware tumbler printed with urns as a toothbrush holder.

Best glass toothbrush holder

Kinto Aqua Culture Vase

Material: Glass | Design details: Two-piece cup and dish combo; can fit multiple toothbrushes | Size: 3.2” x 5.2”

Utibe Mbagwu , social-media strategist and content producer at Instagram , found tableware-maker Kinto through an internet friend with the “most intriguing taste.” Mbagwu repurposed one of the line’s vases for her toothbrushes. It sits beside a Diptyque wash on the sink or inside her mirrored cabinet. Though the “vase–cum–toothbrush holder” looks delicate, it’s plenty durable. And since the top separates from the bottom, you won’t have much trouble getting to hard-to-reach places to clean it. “It’s picturesque as is, but then you can remove the plate for an even more minimalist look,” Mbagwu explains. Its sculpturalism complements her setup of a Dorai bath stone , Nickey Kehoe towel bars , and a Rothko-inspired shower curtain she bought from Society6.

Best (less-expensive) glass toothbrush holder

Front General Store Moroccan Tapered Drinking Glass (Medium)

Material: Glass | Design details: Tapered at the top; can hold multiple toothbrushes | Size: 2.7 x 2.72 (small), 2.9” x 3.5” (medium), 3” x 4.75” (large)

Strategist kitchen and dining writer Emma Wartzman has long admired the glassware at Front General Store in Dumbo. She’d like a full set of its drinking glasses — but since she already had enough glassware in her cabinets, her compromise was to get two: one for her hairbrush and the other for her toothbrush. “It’s really just mostly that I think they’re pretty,” Wartzman says, pointing out their not-too-transparent color with a light-blue hue and solid, sturdy glass. The glasses come in small, medium, and large, each of which could accommodate a number of toothbrushes, but Wartzman has the medium (though she’s in a household of two, there “always seems to be more than two” in there). Whenever Wartzman notices the glass “getting gunky,” she simply rinses it with soap and water and “it’s sparkling” again.

Best toothbrush tumbler

Mosser Glass Addison Rose Tumbler

Material: Glass | Design details: Diamond-cut decoration; can hold multiple toothbrushes | Size: 2.75” x 4.5”

Amanda McClements , founder of Salt & Sundry , has been stocking the shelves of her store with Mosser Glass glassware since opening over a decade ago. ( The Ohio-based brand has appeared on the Strategist before; I use the Bathing Beauty dish to hold jewelry .) That’s how she came upon the Addison tumbler, which “looks like something from your grandma’s cupboard, because she probably has some of the originals.” (The company is a half-century old, after all.) McClements says it’s “super-sturdy for glass.” She’s had hers for seven years, and it’s still in mint condition, currently holding a “freebie toothbrush from the dentist and a tube of Tom’s.” Plus, it could be multitasker if you want it to be: “I could wash it, reclaim it for the kitchen, and serve a cocktail in it,” McClements points out.

Best stainless-steel toothbrush holder

OXO Good Grips Stainless Steel Toothbrush Organizer

Material: Stainless steel | Design details: Angled opening with cover, removable interior divider, holds multiple toothbrushes | Size: 4.12” x 3.75” x 9.5”

OXO’s toothbrush organizer appeared in an earlier version of this guide, and since the kitchenware company — especially its Good Grips collection — has made appearances all over our archives, I decided to include this well-reviewed stainless-steel holder. It’s the only one on this list that features a lid, and it can fit up to four toothbrushes and a tube of toothpaste (or you could squeeze in another brush). There’s a divider on the inside for each to have its own place, and it slides out for easy cleaning.

Best toothbrush holder for travel

Steripod Clip-On Toothbrush Protectors

Material: Plastic | Design details: Clip-on, covers bristles | Size: 3.5” x 1.1” x 6.63”

If you need a toothbrush “holder” to take on the go, one of our resident travel writers (and frequent flier) Katherine Gillespie recommends this Steripod clip-on bristle protector. She never travels without one, snapping it onto the head of her Curaprox . The gadget is “one of those incredibly simple concepts that nonetheless proves totally life-changing,” Gillespie says. It works on both manual and electric toothbrushes, “adding zero bulk” but making sure the bristles “don’t get squashed in transit.”
