We love our versatile clothes. Not only does it help us pack light, but since we like a mix of urban and outdoor adventures, it prepares us for any activity. Since we’ve lived in all types of climates over the years, we’ve had the chance to test out different jackets, and here are our favorites.

We wouldn’t have survived winter in NYC without these jackets. We’ve had them for six years and wear them when traveling to cold destinations (I was hot wearing this parka in Antarctica ). It’s a 3-in-1, and you can wear it five different ways since you can detach the hood and the insulated layer from the shell layer. Plus, they have a clean design. Even though we’re not in NYC anymore, we often use it as separate layers.

You can get the  Vosque (synthetic)  or  Tres 3-in-1 parka  (100% recycled down) . They’re both comparable in function. We have the Tres, which is slightly warmer and bulkier.

We love our Duer Performance Jeans and have a few pairs each. Naturally, they take their tech and make jackets, too. Their collection changes each season, but we currently wear the Stay Dry Denim (men’s) and LuxTwill Trucker Jacket (women’s) with matching pants .

We have a few different Nomatic backpacks and suitcases , so we were excited to hear that they have ventured into apparel. Their outset jacket packs into itself so you can use it as a travel pillow too. Plus it’s one of the softest performance jackets I have. I love all the little details and organization it has without being bulky.

They don’t have a women’s version yet, but it can be worn by either. Jacob wears a small, so hopefully they release a XS so I can get one too!

4. Ministry of Supply Kinetic Blazer ($295) – Best Work Travel Jacket →

We love Ministry of Supply, especially since one of the co-founders is a Georgia Tech alum. Their tagline is “scientifically better,” and their goal is for their pieces to perform better than all your other clothes. I wear the Kinetic Blazer for conferences and anytime I need more business attire but don’t want to sacrifice comfort. I can even throw it over jeans and a tee to dress up a casual look. Jacob has the Velocity Blazer (photos coming soon!).

5. Anatomie Kenya Safari Jacket – Best Style ($398) →

This is one of the best jackets for travel if you’re looking for a mid-weight jacket. It works well dressed up or down while keeping me warm.

Both Kim (our million-mile writer) and I have this jacket and love it for all our trips that aren’t focused on hiking or climbing.

This is our go-to mild-weather travel jacket. It’s warm enough for cool evenings and small enough to pack away in a backpack when we don’t need it. We’ve also worn it as a mid-layer on outdoor adventures.

This jacket has a hoodie and non-hoodie version and is the warmest jacket I own (besides the 3-in-1 above, but I think of that as two jackets). Since I always run colder than Jacob, I decided to get one, and it’s extremely warm. I’ve had this jacket for over six years and continue to wear it often. It also packs down small, although not as small as the Patagonia Nano Puff.

Graphene is the most formidable and lightest material on earth. Infusing this material into a jacket and adding many features helps the Gamma Jacket earn a spot on the list. The best feature is the built-in heating option. All you have to do is plug in a power bank, and the jacket is heated!

This jacket has a hoodie and non-hoodie version and is one we prefer since it has a cleaner look than the waffle knit design. We have the hoodie version but might pick up a non-hoodie version, too, since we wear them all the time, especially when we’re out climbing. We wear it in mild conditions and have used it as a mid-layer for colder conditions.

This is Jacob’s favorite right now for cold weather. It combines warm down with Polartec stretch panels, giving you the insulation you need without sacrificing movement. He pairs it with his  Snaefell from 66ºNorth  when it rains.

This ultralight waterproof jacket packs really small into itself and even has a carrying strap. I love that the hood also tucks into the collar, so you can leave it in there if you don’t need it. The graphene-printed membrane makes it durable and breathable.

14. Nike Dri-FIT Bliss Bomber Jacket – Best Lightweight for Women ($105) →

I have a lot of jackets, but they’re all made for warm weather. I’ve been borrowing Jacob’s jackets until I recently found this Nike Bomber Jacket , a great casual lightweight jacket. I loved it so much that I got it in two colors.

15. Patagonia Nano Puff or Nanostorm – Best Overall (On Sale $119) →

This is one of the best overall jackets for both warmth and packability. It’s extremely light and comes in many different colors. The jacket also doubled as a pillow on the plane for me since you can stuff it into the pocket.

We don’t wear the Nano Puff as often anymore, but it has served us well over the years. Now, we either wear the interior of the 3-in-1 Parka or our  Nano Storm  is our go-to since that one is waterproof without feeling like a raincoat.

• Versatility  – Most of our trips will take us from outdoor activities during the day to fine dining in the evening. Ideally, our jackets can transition between outdoor and urban environments.
• Water-resistant is good if you are getting wet, but not for an extended period of time.
• Waterproofing is necessary if you’ll be outside in the rain a lot. It costs more and is generally less breathable.
• Down Material  – Most jackets will use synthetic or goose down. Generally, goose is warmer and more compressible but less breathable and less water-resistant.
• Packable  – We’re always looking for light and easy-to-pack jackets, although, that isn’t always possible with larger winter coats, so prioritize what you need for each trip.
• Comfort  – Since we’ll be wearing it a lot, we want jackets that are comfy.

When preparing for a trip, you always have to account for whatever kind of weather might come your way – which, in most cases, means packing a jacket just in case. Of course, space in your luggage is precious, and the bulk of a jacket may be more than what you want to pack. That's why many travelers seek out packable jackets that fold down compactly.

Choosing a packable jacket doesn't mean you have to sacrifice warmth, though – there are plenty of options that will keep you warm without the bulk. Read on to find the best packable jackets based on recommendations from travel experts as well as consumer ratings and reviews across a variety of retail sites.

There's no contest when it comes to the best packable jacket: The Patagonia Nano Puff is the tried-and-true choice for travel experts. "The warmth-to-weight ratio on this jacket is unmatched. It keeps me warm in cool temperatures or on a cold plane without making me overheat," says Lauren Maternowski, who has tried dozens of packable jackets in her role as managing editor at Pack Hacker. "And, if I add a few warm layers underneath, it adds enough warmth to feel comfortable in winter climates."

The jacket barely takes up any luggage space, either. "It compresses down to the size of a sandwich bag in its own interior pocket," says Melissa McGibbon, destinations editor at Powder. "I also appreciate that it's sustainably produced and lasts for years."

The Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket is available in a variety of men's and women's sizes as well as with a hood (the Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody , McGibbon's personal favorite).

Many travel writers recommend Arc'teryx for its packable jackets like the Cerium and – if you're looking for something particularly lightweight – the Atom LT. Though light, this packable jacket retains heat thanks to its synthetic insulation. It also protects from the elements with a water-resistant shell, making it suitable for a variety of climates.

In addition to the design, the overall fit of this jacket earns high praise. "One of my favorite things about the Atom LT is its fit and comfort," says travel blogger Ethan Williams of Traveling Gossip. "It's not too tight, allowing room for layering, but still has a flattering, streamlined design." He notes that the side panels are made of a breathable, stretchy material, which increases mobility.

If you're looking for a jacket with a hood, there's also the Atom LT Hoody . While both men's and women's sizes are available, note that the women's jacket is now called the Atom (without the LT). Some stores may still advertise it as the Atom LT, however.

The Cotopaxi Fuego Hooded Down Jacket features responsibly sourced 800-fill down, so you can feel warm and cozy (literally and figuratively) when wearing it. Its outer shell, which has two zippered pockets, is water-resistant, and an interior zippered pocket provides protection for your smartphone or other small essentials.

"My favorite feature is the scuba hood, which – along with the jacket zipping up to my nose – keeps me extra warm on cold and windy days," says Leilani Osmundson , digital producer for travel at U.S. News. "I wear this jacket everywhere, from skiing and walking my dog in the winter to camping and backpacking in the summer. My other down jackets have stayed tucked away in my closet ever since I received this one!"

The Cotopaxi Fuego Hooded Down Jacket is available in a variety of the brand's signature color combos, which make it also stylish. "I seriously get compliments all the time," Osmundson says.

A packable rain jacket is essential for any vacation, and the Marmot PreCip remains a classic choice 20 years after it first debuted. This well-priced option is 100% seam-taped with eco-friendly materials to ensure you'll stay completely dry, whether you're chasing the Niagara Falls on a boat tour or exploring Thailand during the wet season. It's also so compact that its hood can be rolled into the collar, and the jacket itself is designed to fold down into its own pocket.

Amazon makes some surprisingly sturdy travel gear, including packable jackets. In fact, more than 44,000 reviewers in total across men's and women's options have given the Amazon Essentials Packable Jacket 4.5 stars, pointing to its value for the price. The water-resistant puffer jacket is lightweight yet provides just the right amount of coziness on cool days (and works well over a hoodie for added warmth). Travelers say the jacket has worked well for a variety of trips, including cruises to Alaska and backpacking through Europe.

The jacket is available in a variety of colors and sizes including children's and plus sizes , though many reviewers note the sizes are inaccurate (so you may want to purchase a few or use Amazon's Prime Try Before You Buy to find the right fit). The jacket comes with a packable carry bag and is machine-washable.

Price: $39.90 or less

Fashion meets function in the Pack-It-Down Jacket by Lululemon, which features a slim fit that also covers the buttocks. "One thing I very much appreciate about the Pack-It-Down puffer jacket is that it cinches at the waist, so it doesn't make me look like an amorphous blob like most puffer-down jackets do," says travel blogger Katie Caf. You'd never know the jacket has 700-fill-power goose down by looking at it.

Caf also notes that her coat still looks new even after three New York City winters and two years of full-time travel, including trips to warm weather destinations. "When I'm traveling in tropical climates, it's a no-brainer to still bring my Pack-It-Down jacket because it takes up almost no room in my bag and weighs next to nothing." The water-resistant jacket has a removable stuff pocket for packing it into luggage, as well as a removable hood and hand pockets with a hidden phone sleeve.

If you’re flying somewhere warm this fall or winter, the last thing you want is to be lugging around a parka or peacoat when you land. A bulky jacket won’t be useful either, especially if your travel plans include activities like hiking, running, or camping. Fortunately, that’s why packable jackets exist.

Insulated either with down made from duck and goose feathers or synthetic materials, packable jackets are ultra-lightweight, keep you warm, and magically stuff into their own pocket or carrying sack for optimal portability. While these jackets tend to look like puffers, they aren’t the big and bulky ones you’d see in a ‘90s hip-hop video. They’re much thinner and weigh next to nothing, making them perfect for layering. 

We tried out the best packable jackets available firsthand and wore them for our travels and day-to-day activities during the testing period. We found jackets that are not only comfortable, warm, and provide good value, but that also have travel-friendly features like inside pockets and stashable hoods. These are our favorites.

This is a no-nonsense packable jacket at an unbeatable price.

There’s no extra packing pouch or a way to pack it into its own pocket.

This Eddie Bauer jacket earned top scores during our testing, and for good reason. It’s the kind of jacket that’s perfect for cool summer nights, whether at home or on your travels. While it’s fairly thick, it’s not as bulky as a winter puffer, making it ideal for camping and hiking when you need an extra midweight layer — like packing for a trip to Iceland .

Filled with real down that’s responsibly sourced and made with recycled nylon and polyester, this jacket packs down super small into a backpack and quickly de-wrinkles upon pulling it out. After six months of testing, we think it's perfect for shoulder season when the days are warmer, but it gets cold at night. We also found it fashionable and unlikely to go out of style in the coming years. It’s a warm, high-quality down jacket that can handle drizzly weather.

It’s on the expensive side and it’s slightly heavier than others on our list.

The big issue with down is that it isn’t built for wet weather – it often clumps and loses its insulating advantage. Freeport, Maine’s L.L.Bean changes all that by filling this jacket with specially treated down that stays dry over 10 times longer than untreated down. The down is also 850 fill, meaning it’s more densely packed than many other down jackets so it’ll keep you more insulated and warm. Throughout our six-month tests, we didn't expect this to keep us as warm as it did, and were pleasantly surprised. Plus, it still looks good as new.

We found this jacket to be of excellent quality overall and very soft to the touch. We loved the pull cord in the hood, too, and found it very packable — being able to fold it into the left pocket to form a 9 x 12-inch pouch is a highly useful feature for travelers.

Best for Hiking

It’s a jacket that offers plenty of mobility, making it great for active ventures.

After six months of regular use, the jacket does show a few small stains.

This layer is the anti-jacket jacket. It’s extremely durable and comfortable — and feels as if you aren’t wearing a jacket at all. The chest pocket for storing a phone and other small belongings is convenient and the cuffs around the wrist are a nice touch as well.

We used this jacket for a cooler-temperature hike or even for running as it allows for full mobility. It’s great for traveling since it packs down super small and only took up a fraction of a pocket in our backpack. After wearing the coat almost daily for six months, it is still in good condition and likely to last for seasons to come.

We wish it came in more vibrant colors.

Built for taking your workouts outside, the Canadian yoga brand has made an excellent packable running jacket. We found it to be super versatile and remarkably insulated, despite being so thin. After using the coat for running up to two times per week for six months, we're happy to report that it does not retain odor. The pockets are convenient and we loved having a slot in the back during our runs. The jacket packs down well and its material features four-way stretch and sweat-wicking and anti-odor capabilities, making it perfect for sweaty activities.

In terms of style, we felt comfortable wearing this jacket everywhere from around town to the trail, and even on the Maid of the Mist boat ride in Niagara Falls — it’s water-repellent and there’s a hood to keep out drizzles. This jacket could also easily work as a base layer for when it’s colder outside.

It’s thicker and more insulated than many on this list.

It might be too heavy of a layer depending on your activity.

For colder-weather adventurers, this Rab jacket is wonderful. It’s made of warm, water-resistant down as well as high-quality polyamide including nylon. We loved the brimmed hood, which kept us as comfortable as if we were wearing a hat. It’s very easy to pack down and comes with an extra sack to stuff into.

While expensive, in terms of quality, insulation, and comfort, we feel that it’s certainly worth the price. After wearing the coat daily for six months, it shows no signs of wear and tear and has proven to be a durable winter coat.

This lightweight jacket is built for moderate temperatures, making it a great layer for spring and fall.

The zipper is a bit finicky. 

For years, outdoor gear was expensive, making it inaccessible to the vast majority of us who are curious about the outdoors but aren’t looking to spend our entire paychecks on gear. Then came Decathlon. The French retailer has proven that you don’t have to be flush to own high-quality gear. Case in point, this down puffer jacket. 

Made from warm, responsibly sourced 800-fill down and a water-repellent polyamide shell, it’s built for temperatures between 23 and 41 degrees Fahrenheit, making it ideal as an extra layer for your travels. The jacket stuffs into its left-hand pocket, which seems to magically expand to fit the rest of the material, and the jacket feels very durable overall. Even after six months of wearing the coat for daily activities including yard work and walking the dog, plus washing in a standard washer and dryer, it still looks new. It’s comfortable, too, and we definitely see it being a go-to for our next camping trip or hike.

Best for Layering

Patagonia nano puff jacket.

It’s surprisingly warm for how thin it is.

It doesn’t come with a hood, though you can pay a bit more for the hooded version. 

Patagonia needs no introduction. The height of sustainability and corporate responsibility, the brand is a reliable choice for travel gear, and this synthetic puffer jacket is no exception. Remarkably thin, we found that the Nano Puff kept us warm in windy, cooler temperatures. The absence of bulk makes it stand out as a base layer for activities like skiing and mountaineering, and while you could reasonably wear it for a run, it isn’t very breathable. 

The quilted pattern isn’t just a classic look, it’s also meant to prevent rips from spreading, and this jacket has a great system of pockets, including a zippered chest pocket that duals as a packable sack. Also since it’s synthetic instead of down, you don’t have to worry about getting it wet, and you can keep it packed down for longer without risking damage. Still, after six months of use its puffiness remains nice and plush, and it has kept us warm on milder days.

Most Breathable

Cotopaxi capa hybrid insulated hooded jacket.

This jacket has side meshing that allows for plenty of airflow.

After six months of use, we noticed the zips in the side pockets snag on the fabric frequently.

This synthetic jacket is stylish and functional. Bright colors combinations like wine/blue violet and mezcal/sunset are irresistible — but there’s even more to love about this packable jacket than style alone. The mix of a nylon shell and polyester/spandex sleeves make it super comfy and it fits snuggly on the arms. It’s also very breathable due to side meshing, and the sleeves feature convenient thumbholes.

This jacket is insulated with a recycled synthetic polyester material, PrimaLoft Gold P.U.R.E. (Produced Using Reduced Emissions), which is stretchy and temperature-regulating. And we love that it packs into the chest pocket, though we did find it simpler to toss it in a tote bag for easy grabbing. It also is still in great condition after multiple wash cycles.

Best Waterproof

Rab phantom waterproof pull-on jacket.

When water hits this jacket, it turns to droplets that roll right off.

There are no pockets.

The technology that British clothing brand Rab has put into this jacket is astonishing. While reducing water to droplets that slide right off, it’s paper-thin and at just 3 ounces, it feels like you’re wearing little more than a (comfortable) plastic bag. Since it’s so thin, it’s terrific for running and we found packing it to be a breeze — it rolls into a sack no bigger than a soda can. You can also roll the hood down when you don’t need it thanks to a nifty stash loop that we can’t believe is not more common. Speaking of the hood, it’s very well-designed with a wired brim to keep the rain off your face.

Note that this jacket has virtually no insulation, nor any pockets, and that it’s on the pricier side. But we see it as an ideal shell for the active person who wants to keep dry on all their outdoor adventures.

Best Splurge

Mountain hardware ghost whisperer 2 hoody.

It keeps you warmer than other options without sacrificing a light weight.

After six months of wearing, we've noticed some minor stains developing on the outer fabric.

We were very impressed with this jacket in all aspects, including packability (it stuffs into its pocket), warmth, weight, mobility, and comfort. The higher 800 down fill means that it can trap more air, thus ensuring greater insulation. Plus, it’s insanely stylish, perfect for everything from walking around town to hanging out at base camp.

Most Versatile

Vuori venture track jacket.

This sporty jacket is stylish enough to pair with various outfits.

There’s no hood and it’s not adjustable.

If you don’t like the feel of a puffer, check out Vuori’s soft and comfy Venture Track Jacket. This jacket manages to pack up to roughly the size of a mango without looking wrinkled when it’s unfurled. Wear it around town or to the bar, then scrunch it up and put it in the central console of your car, a bag, or even a pocket of a pair of cargo shorts. It’s also great for cooler weather workouts, and if it gets sweaty you can simply throw it in the wash (on cold) with like colors.

Note that this jacket isn’t built for temperatures cooler than 50 degrees, and the cuffs don’t have much stretch, so we couldn’t push them up to stay on our forearm or above the elbow on their own. However, this works as a great layering piece to wear above or below other pieces in your travel wardrobe.

Outdoor Research’s SuperStrand LT is a top of the line packable jacket you can count on. We loved how light and warm it was, and it felt durable enough to last for years. We felt great wearing it around town over a thin sweater, though it’s easily warm enough to wear on its own. Since it’s insulated with down, it’s not waterproof, so be careful not to get it wet. If you do, a little drizzle will be okay. Note that this jacket does not come with a hood, so you’ll need to wear a hat in the cold.

Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Parka

It’s terrific quality for the price.

Some feathers may fly out.

Japanese retailer Uniqlo has made down accessible for many of us by keeping its packable parka affordable, and very warm. It packs down into a small bag that conveniently attaches to the inside of the jacket when you’re not using it, and we loved how warm it kept us on a cool night outside watching Friday Night Football. The jacket is one of the lightest we tested and wasn’t at all cumbersome to wear. After six months of testing, we found this to be the perfect option for leaving in your car or day pack for spontaneous needs.

An issue we encountered was that a couple of down feathers escaped while we were wearing it, and we also didn’t feel like the material was quite as durable as others we tried.

Most Durable

Carhartt storm defender packable jacket.

It’s rugged and very waterproof.

It isn’t breathable.

If you’re in the market for a durable packable jacket, consider this one from American workwear brand Carhartt. This jacket is tough and exceptionally waterproof, even under heavy rain. It’s much lighter than you’d expect for something so durable and it packs up into its left pocket. 

One thing we really loved is that it comes with velcro cuff straps and a big hood that kept water from dripping onto our face. It also kept us dry in rain and snow throughout our six months of tests. The price is right as well.

Other Packable Jackets We Liked

A few of the other jackets we tested didn’t quite make our list of the very best, but were still worth an honorable mention. 

Coolibar Men’s Arcadian Packable Sunblock Jacket UPF 50+ : We loved how light and breathable this jacket was, but it felt too thin and not warm enough to be as versatile as we would have liked. 

Eddie Bauer Men’s RainPac Anorak : This jacket is a terrific water- and windproof shell that packs into a neat travel backpack. Unfortunately, the strings of the packable backpack felt uncomfortable when we put it on.

We tested firsthand the best packable jackets on the market for ease of use, design, comfort, and value over a three-month period. After unboxing, we tried the jackets on, tested out their zipper(s) and rated their comfortability and overall feel. We tested design features such as pockets, hood, and tightening cords. Then we tested the jackets’ packability by stuffing them into their sack, pocket, or directly into a bag or backpack. After packing them, we unfurled them to check whether they came out wrinkled or not (most came out wrinkled, but flattened out relatively quickly). Then we put the jackets into circulation in our daily routines for six months to assess their value and durability.

Tips for Buying Packable Jackets

Look for something lightweight.

The idea behind a packable jacket—just like a packable backpack —is that it’s something you can pull out when you need it, and won’t mind carrying around in your backpack or luggage. So make sure it’s as lightweight as possible so it won’t add extra bulk to your travel gear and won’t be cumbersome to wear while you’re out and about.

Consider your activities

The jackets on this list are meant to keep you warm and pack down small. After that, features vary widely. Not all are waterproof or windproof, and many aren’t breathable enough to wear for high-intensity exercise like running. If you want a jacket for activities that involve sweating, look for something that’s breathable by checking for venting and materials that wick away moisture. If general warmth or an extra lightweight layer is what you’re looking for, you’ll want to look for different features more suited to your needs.

Size up if you plan on layering

Most of these jackets fit snugly to the body, allowing you to layer a rain shell over them, but if you plan to wear layers underneath — such as a fleece jacket —consider getting a size larger than you usually do. Many packable jackets are inherently lighter weight to account for wearing more layers on top or underneath.

The Patagonia Nano Puff Hoodie takes the prize of best overall travel jacket for a variety of reasons. I have traveled with this jacket in my backpack for the last seven years. It has been with me to over 20 countries and at least 3,000 trail miles and counting. It is the best all around jacket and the most versatile travel jacket on this list.

The Nano Puff hoodie is made out of synthetic down, so it is a bit water-resistant, unlike natural down. It is lightweight and very packable at 12.8 ounces making it perhaps the best jacket ever!!!! If you want more protection it’s best to combine it with a waterproof Patagonia jacket .

A good down (or synthetic down in this case) is an absolute must for most backpacking trips. Even in warm, tropical countries, I have ended up using my Nano Puff every day as a pillow on buses and whilst camping. When it’s windy out but not too wet I also like to combine it with my Patagonia Houdini for a bit more protection.

At $249.00 USD this Patagonia travel jacket is priced in the mid-range in terms of its competitors. It is not necessarily the best travel jacket ever but is very high quality, versatile and priced in the mid-range making it affordable. It also feels absolutely lovely to wear – its soft, light, warm and is kind of like being hugged by kittens!

Though My Nano Puff has seen a ton of abuse, it is still going strong after all this time. When the zipper on my Nano Puff died, Patagonia replaced it for free. Apart from the zipper I have had zero issues.

In addition to their excellent warranty, Patagonia is a great company to support in general. Each Nano Puff Hoodie is made from 55% post-consumer recycled content. You can feel good about supporting a company that actually gives a shit about the earth and their own impact on it. Best Rain Jacket to Take Traveling  – Arc’teryx Beta AR

Arc’teryx is famous the world over for making some of the best quality gear for adventures. I have had several rain jackets in the past that claimed to be waterproof. There is nothing more frustrating (and potentially dangerous) than being out on a backpacking trip in the mountains and having your rain jacket fail you. Arc’teryx make some of the best traveling jackets out there though so that won’t happen with any of their gear.

After being a rain-soaked-hiker one too many times, I bit the bullet and bought an Arc’teryx Beta AR rain jacket. I have never once looked back. My hiking trips have never been the same and my happiness levels have stayed consistently high since that day, for me, it’s the best travel anorak on the market bar none.

You feel like you are wearing an invisible suit of waterproof armor. It’s Gore-Tex Pro Shell three-layer laminate fabric is waterproof, snow-shedding, windproof, breathable, lightweight and durable. If you’re going somewhere very rainy, like a Sri Lankan adventure , be sure to bring a jacket as waterproof as this one. (Or this one).

The Beta AR features taped seams like a tent so you are guaranteed to stay dry even in the most heinous of storms. It also features zipping watertight pockets for stashing your snacks (very important) or phone (meh). At just over 1 pound, it might just be the most useful piece of clothing you will pack for your adventure by weight. In fact, if you’re looking for the best outdoor jacket on the market , this might just be it!

The major drawback. For many backpackers, the Arc’teryx Beta AR is cost prohibitive. And for good reason. Who wants to spend $600 on a jacket?! I admit it was really tough for me to fork out that kind of dough for a jacket. But hey, serious adventures call for serious, quality gear. Arc’teryx Beta AR is the definition of quality and serious. Unfortunately, $600 USD is the price you will have to pay if you want the luxury of never being wet and cold again. Look at it as a lifelong investment in backpacking comfort.

Once you have this jacket on your body in a rainstorm you will know what I am talking about and you will thank me. When they say waterproof, your $600 guarantees that not a single fucking rain drop will be felt inside the jacket!

Best Ultralight Down Jacket: Feathered Friends EOS

This one is a great lightweight warm jacket for travel, hiking, or for casual city use. Offering maximum amount warmth compressed into a tiny package, the Feathered Friends EOS jacket apart from the rest. Feathered Friends have been producing some great travel down jackets and sleeping bags for years. The EOS is yet another fine addition to their down layering arsenal. It’s a packable travel jacket which is great for popping inside your backpack.

We tested this jacket in the Pakistani mountains on several long treks and found the EOS to offer the perfect blend of warmth, lightweight, and packability. To put it bluntly, the EOS kicked ass and felt great to trek in when the temperatures dipped on the glacier. What’s cool is that this jacket isn’t just a one-trick pony. It’s a solid choice for your Autumn adventures , regarding its weight, comfort, and packability.

The FF EOS jacket has a fitted cut so it hugs the body whilst maximizing warmth. At just under $340, the EOS is not the cheapest jacket out there, but in our opinion, well worth the investment. Unlike true ultralight jackets, the Flinders can take a fair bit of abuse as the fabric is not paper thin. Plus, you would be hard pressed to find another jacket with Ethically-sourced 900+ fill power goose down power with the same warmth to weight ratio. 

The  Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer for example, while an excellent ultralight option, simply can’t take the punishment other down jackets can. That’s not to say that it is poor quality though. If you don’t do lots of climbing or bush-bashing anyway, this shouldn’t be an issue for you if you want to really go ultralight.

Patagonia’s Micro Puff® Hoody

• The good: Extremely lightweight, zippered outside pockets, windproof, center-front zipper goes all the way above the chin, packs into an 11.5 x 6.5-inch rectangle.
• The bad: Water resistant but not waterproof, makes the wearer’s head look like an egg when zipped all the way up with the hood on.

Don’t be fooled by the name of this puffy by Patagonia: It’s much more than a hoodie, it’s a proper winter jacket that’s as versatile as it is practical. You can certainly wear it in early fall over a long-sleeve shirt to protect you from the season’s chilly air, but it is also appropriate for wearing in colder weather on top of multiple layers to keep you toasty when the temperatures plummet or the wind picks up. While the tight elastic cuffs and hood, as well as the drawstrings at the hem, help keep the wind out, note that because it’s water resistant but not waterproof, the Micro Puff is not meant for playing in the wet snow or in heavy rain falls. Also, while it’s warm, it’s not the jacket you want in extremely cold temperatures (20 degrees should be the cut-off.) That said, if you get caught in a downpour, know that Patagonia’s Micro Puff dries extremely fast.

My partner took his Micro Puff with him on a 10-day trip to Iceland in September and it proved to be the perfect travel jacket for the fall weather on this near-Arctic island nation. It was warm enough to protect him when exposed to the wind during hikes and it was sufficiently water-resistant for the few showers we experienced.

The biggest asset of Patagonia’s Micro Puff is its ridiculously lightweight (10.5 ounces or 298 grams) and its capacity to pack into an 11.5 x 6.5-inch rectangle by being stuffed into the left pocket. This jacket will take minimum space in your carry-on or checked luggage, but you can also just toss it in a small backpack in case you need it, whether you’re going for an urban walk or a hike.

The shell of Patagonia’s Micro Puff is made of 100 percent post-consumer recycled nylon and its insulation is made of an extremely durable 100 percent recycled polyester developed by Patagonia that’s warm like down plumes but much lighter and way more ethical. – Morgane Croissant

• The good: As light as a feather, packs into a rectangle that fits in the palm of your hand, extremely breathable, very comfortable, zippered chest pocket for small items.
• The bad: Water resistant but not waterproof, not warm

Patagonia’s Houdini® Air Jacket is not one you take with you to a destination where you know you’ll have to face low temperatures, high winds, and heavy rain. It’s meant for keeping you warm and dry during intense outdoor activities in mild temperatures and in case of a sprinkle. It’s the perfect jacket if you jog at dawn or at dusk and want to keep the chill away from your body when you sweat, or if you go for a bike ride or hike and want to make sure you have some protection in case the weather turns. The elasticized cuffs and the drawstrings on the hem and the hood keep the wind out. It’s best worn on top of a base layer or quick-dry t-shirt, not under a bulky sweater. The cut of the jacket is meant to facilitate your movements, allowing you to keep going in comfort, no matter what. When wet, Patagonia’s Houdini Air Jacket dries at record speed.

My partner took his Houdini Air Jacket (as well as his Micro Puff) with him on a hike-filled trip to Iceland in September and it came in handy when the weather was sunny and warmish, but he needed something to wear on the chilly way up the side of a volcano or after a sweaty hike. It’s very breathable so your clothes are not trapped in a damp and sweaty shell even while you give it your all in the outdoors.

Because it’s so incredibly tiny when packed into its stuff sack (7 x 3.5 inches), it’s worth adding to your luggage, whether that be your checked suitcase, your smaller carry-on, or your backpack. It’s smaller and lighter (4.1 ounces or 116 grams) than a balled-up pair of socks. – Morgane Croissant

Jack Wolfskin’s Pack & Go Shell

• The good: Extremely waterproof, windproof, breathable, very light, packs into a small trapezoid, zippered side pockets.
• The bad: Only two pockets, not warm (it’s a shell), few choices of color

Jack Wolfskin’s Pack and Go Shell is a no-frills, rainproof, and windproof shell that does exactly what it’s meant to do: Keep you bone dry even in heavy rain, and safe from blowing winds. It’s also very breathable so you can wear it while hiking without fearing dampness. Note that because it’s a shell, it won’t keep you warm in low temperatures, but layering underneath it is always an option.

The best feature of this jacket is, of course, its packability. The left pocket doubles as a stow pouch. After stuffing it in, you’ll be left with a light (11.6 ounces or 330 grams), 9.8 x 7-inch trapezoid that you can throw in any bag or luggage. But there’s more to praise about this package jacket: The fabric is soft, not crinkly, and barely wrinkles; the hood, the hem, and the sleeves are adjustable so no drop of rain or draft can get to you; and the two side pockets are deep and can be zipped shut so your belongings don’t escape. My personal favorite detail is the zipper pulls, which are the perfect length and are covered in a grippy material that feels lovely on your fingers. (Every little thing counts when you spend a lot of time outdoors in the wet.)

Jack Wolfskin’s choice of color for this packable jacket, for both men and women, is thin (three colors available for men and four for women), so here’s hoping they have a bigger selection in the future. I went for the hedge green while my partner has the night blue version, both of which are discreet and work just as well in the great outdoors as in any urban setting.

After looking at the size chart on Jack Wolfskin’s website, I was advised to order a size XL. It seemed surprisingly big since I’m usually a size M, but I decided to follow the brand’s guidance. Upon receiving it, the jacket was unfortunately too large, as initially expected. I placed a new order for a size L jacket and it’s a perfect fit. I would advise to order one size up if you’re in between sizes, especially if you plan to wear layers underneath. – Morgane Croissant

I stared at the pile of jackets on my bed.

Trevor, my husband, sighed.  “It’s time for bed. Just pick one.”

I threw up my hands, paced the room a little, fingered one jacket and another. See, I hate being cold and wet when I’m traveling. Actually, let me amend that statement. I hate being cold. If I’m semi-warm, being wet is tolerable and maybe even enjoyable.

Which means picking the right jacket for travel is tricky. Like walking into a casino with a dim notion of how to play blackjack and betting your life savings.

At least that’s how it feels to me. So when I find the right jacket for the right weather situation, I’m the lucky winner with gold coins raining down on my head, dancing like Psy in the  Gangnam Style  music video.

Thanks to its slim fit, you won’t look like an overstuffed marshmallow. But inside, you might feel as warm and cozy as a fire-toasted one.

One reviewer on Amazon raves:  “This is the perfect travel jacket for multiple weather conditions. It is probably not for Arctic weather, but works great for layering and easy roll up and shove into a backpack or even purse . This jacket is ready for anything you throw its way. Seriously.

With an organic cotton-nylon blend stretch canvas shell, it can handle whatever your trip throws down. Rain? No problem. Snow? Bring it. Brisk wind? Let’s do this. Sudden change in the weather? Got you covered.

Thanks to an attached hood, you’ll ward off any chillier-than-yesterday breezes without trouble. Did I mention it even looks adventure-ready with safari-style pockets?

Lululemon Men’s City Sweat Zip Hoodie French Terry ($128)

Jeremy, co-founder of Tortuga, recommends a Lululemon hoodie like this one. He says,  “They’re super comfortable for flights and tend to have an abundance of sleek pockets that are either zippered or have snaps. They last forever and dress up or down. All of mine have been in black.”

This particular hoodie boasts Lycra fabric so your jacket doesn’t go saggy and hidden pockets for your smartphone and coins. All the better to travel without looking like a tourist.

Ministry of Supply Intelligent Heated Jacket: Men and Women ($495)

This smart jacket “uses artificial intelligence to learn your preferences, and automatically heats to your optimal temperature” according to their website. Ok, you have my attention.

With your smartphone app, you control the jacket’s thermostat. Thanks to its ability to repel wind, snow, water, and odors, this jacket is primed to be your travel buddy on every trip.

Patrick, designer at Tortuga, says: “I’ve worn it in a full range of temperatures from 60F to 15F. It takes some time to heat up enough for temperatures that low, but it’s definitely doable.”

Icebreaker Women’s Merino Quantum Hoodie ($169)

Don’t let the word hoodie fool you. This is a women ’s jacket that can hold its own.

Reflective details, breathable fabric, warm midweight merino wool, and a fitted hood. Yup, this jacket checks all the correct boxes for a travel-ready summer jacket to fend off cool English nights or those Scottish moor winds (romantic in theory, chilly in practice, a no-go for long-haul traveling).

Even better, because of merino’s natural odor resistance, you’ll smell as sweet as the day you set off. Oh thank goodness.

The Best Rain Jackets for Travel

When you say “waterproof travel jacket” or, more simply, “rain jacket”, you mean a shell. Shells have been a crucial part of  winter packing  forever, and while the outer layer shell hasn’t changed much in the past 20 years, there are still some pretty great options.

Craghoppers NatGeo 250 Jacket ($200)

The Craghopper NatGeo 250 travel jacket was designed for adventurous photographers and journalists. If this jacket can live up to the rigorous field test of NatGeo employees, it can handle whatever adventure you have in mind.

Featuring “Aqua Dry” and “Thermo Air+” waterproofing and breathability, as well as a pocket with built in RFID shielding technology ( not really necessary ), this jacket is for the pros.

Columbia Watertight II Windbreaker ($55)

The Columbia Watertight II windbreaker is definitely the lightest travel jacket on the list, and easily my personal favorite. A slim, carry on friendly top layer, this travel jacket simply performs. It keeps you warm, dry, and doesn’t weigh you down. What else are you looking for?

I packed this rain coat for my 800km hike across Spain on the Camino de Santiago this past October. When every ounce counts, you want a jacket that’s worth it, and the Watertight performed beautifully. This jacket stuffs into its own pocket (easy to pack), and it kept me dry in several downpours in the high altitude of the Pyrenees.

Elastic on the cuffs, waistband, and even the trim of the hood kept the wind and wet off my skin and locked in my body heat.

The color options are stylish enough to wear in town without any tourist shame, and while this jacket doesn’t have any insulation to speak of (it’s super thin), the jacket kept me warm without overheating thanks to the breathability. Worth packing as a great top layer for wind, rain, and chilly mornings and evenings, and when you just don’t have any room for a bulky winter coat–even a “travel jacket.”

Pro Tip : If your jacket doesn’t pack into a stuff pocket, save space by rolling it into a tight cylinder and wrap a thick rubber band around it to keep it bundled in the bottom of your bag until you need it.

Helly Hansen Squamish CIS 3-in-1 Travel Jacket ($225)

I love the flexibility of a 3-in-1 travel jacket, but so often the insulated layer/outer shell combo is more like a 3-in-none than a candidate for the best travel jacket. Not so with the Helly Hansen Squamish jacket.

 The insulated layer is great for keeping you warm around the bonfire or a chilly clear night out without the added protection of the outer shell. Just zip it off and you’re good to go.

  Bonus:  It doesn’t look like the “inside” of a jacket, so that’s good.

The outer shell layer is perfect all by itself for a fall hike with rain in the forecast. Fully seam sealed so it’s wind and waterproof, the jacket features nice touches like a storm flap on the front zipper pocket, and waterproof pockets for your phone, as well as adjustable cuffs (super important). If you wear both layers together, take solace in the fact that you can adapt to warmer temps or sunny weather as the day changes.

The Best Winter Jackets for Travel

Icebreaker Merino Women’s Stratus Zip Hooded Jacket ($262)

This full-length jacket is lined with New Zealand merino wool to keep you warm. The jacket’s outside is treated with DWR, so sleet or snow slides right off. Reviewers recommend buying a size larger than needed.

Women’s prAna Long Jacket ($199)

This long, insulated jacket comes with a removable faux fur hood detail. Plus, it’s made from a recycled wool blend, so you can feel good about saving the planet.

 Tortuga writer Meg just took this jacket on a winter trip to notoriously chilly Chicago. She says,  “I love that it’s longer (covers your butt!) and it’s super warm without being too bulky or making me feel like that kid that can’t put his arms down in a Christmas Story.”

Patagonia Men’s Nano Puff Travel Jacket ($199)

If you want to take your winter jacket to the limit, the even slimmer Patagonia Nano Puff travel jacket is the way to go.

Insanely lightweight while still being warm, this jacket is windproof, water-resistant (DWR treated), and will maintain up to 96% of its warmth rating even when wet.

Not bad for a jacket you can crumple up in your fist.

Baubax Men’s and Women’s Windbreaker 2.0 ($178)

Equipped with 13 pockets for on the go digital nomads, the ScotteVest Pack Jacket is a tech friendly beast.

In addition to the standard two zippered pockets this jacket has two chest pockets, an extendable key holder,  sunglasses  pocket, passport pocket, iPad pocket, phone pocket (with headphone cable access) and the “weight management system” to keep everything in place and balanced  so you don’t bulge and sag like a tourist. Featuring a water-resistant, super lightweight, stretchable “ninja” fabric weave, breathable back vents, contoured hood, reflective strips, and adjustable cuffs and hem. The action jacket is designed to be tailor fitted to your body so you forget you’re wearing it. 

However, the coolest part has to be the phone pocket. The seam sealed zipper and adjustable tension strap keep your phone dry and snug against your arm. No more bouncing around on that morning jog, or sprint through the airport terminal.

Best Fashionable Jackets For Travel

Canada Goose Brookvale Hoody ($525)

I know, I know. Canada Goose is super expensive and you’re totally “that traveler” when you wear one, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention these top of the line travel jackets.

 The Brooklvale Hoody is a lighter, leaner jacket than the flagship parka, and the versatility really comes through.

 This jacket looks great, but really is built for winter.

The quilting and patented duck down means this jacket is rated for -15C (that’s icy), and the “Veraflex” fabric means you can wear it in practically any environment. Even better, the Brookvale hoody packs down into its own stuff pocket for increased packability. Expensive, but worth it.

Strafe Drifter Jacket ($249)

A modern twist on the classic bomber look, if you’re not weathering any major storms, this is the jacket for looking good in winter.

Made from a stretchy, breathable fabric filled with warm, “diamond quilted Primaloft Silver insulation” (so fancy), the Strafe Drifter Jacket is a premium lightweight stylish travel jacket.

TopShop Rosa Biker Jacket ($88)

I’d be amiss—and Tom Cruise would be sorely disappointed in me—if I didn’t add in a black leather bomber jacket to this list.

Want to look BA and fashionable? Want to look dangerous, mysterious, and charming?

A black leather bomber jacket gives you all that, plus warmth and decent wind-blocking abilities. But really, if you just want to drape yourself in bad boy allure, that’s cool, too.

That’s the main reason why I bought one.

Pro-tip:  This bad boy does NOT pack down, and doesn’t apologize either.

A travel jacket can make or break your trip. No joke. One time in  Boston , the constant rain was so bad, I walked into a store and bought a raincoat. Who cares what the price was. Just no more rain ruining my day.

That’s the benefit of a great jacket: to keep you dry and warm so you enjoy the sights you traveled so far to see.

We live in a Golden Age of water repellency. Before nylon shells and Gore-Tex membranes, humans devised hydrophobic clothing using vinyl or oiled canvas — and, beven efore that, cured seal and whale intestines. Now, thankfully, that’s all in the past; today, waterproofing happens at a molecular level with advanced membranes that keep water droplets out but let body vapor (i.e. sweat) through.

The advancements have allowed rain jackets to become lighter, more breathable, packable and no less rain-proof. Rain jacket technology keeps getting better too — today, companies are experimenting with new fabrics to make rain shells softer and more comfortable and adding stretch for increased mobility (and less of that trademark crinkly jacket sound).

Style hasn’t fallen by the wayside either. The new class of rain jacket is light enough, durable enough, breathable enough and waterproof enough to handle multi-day treks through misting rain as well as the inevitable deluge during commuting hours.

Testing a rain jacket is inherently weather-dependent: as the name suggests, you’ve got to have a little rain for true testing to take place. Lucky for you, our testers are strategically located across the greater U.S. and tested these rain-defenders in a variety of conditions, from the streets of New York City to the hiking trails of coastal California and everywhere in between.

We tested these jackets during springtime showers, torrential fall downpours and the occasional unexpected sprinkle. We concentrated on materials, weight and fit as our parameters and come up with this list of capable, style-forward options that leave your dad’s raincoat in the dust. Here are our top picks.

Patagonia is synonymous with quality and the Granite Crest jacket is no exception, featuring all of the performance and functionality we’ve come to expect from the Ventura, California-born brand. And, as usual, it is made with earth-conscious craftsmanship: its NetPlus 100 percent post-consumer recycled nylon ripstop is made from recycled fishing nets and is finished with PFC-free DWR.

Our tester loved the features you get with this jacket: a helmet-compatible hood, pit zips to keep things breezy when temperatures rise and a number of clever pockets that to keep everything close by whether you’re climbing or just shlepping to the grocery store. The waterproofing is excellent, as you’d expect; plus, it packs down into its own pocket, and the adjustable waist is a great addition.

When The North Face released its Futurelight waterproof fabric technology in late 2019, it only showed up in outerwear made for skiing, snowboarding and other mountain adventures. Now though, the brand is rapidly rolling the tech into everything from hiking footwear to tents. Like other waterproof membranes, Futurelight is impermeable, but thanks to a unique manufacturing process, it’s also remarkably breathable. That makes it the perfect material for a lightweight rain layer, like the new and improved Dryzzle.

Rain jackets tend to become clammy as soon as temperatures rise, so the additional breathability of Futurelight is a welcome upgrade to this TNF classic. We’ve worn the similar pullover version, the Arque Active Trail Futurelight Jacket, ( $198.95 $99.48) through the New York City subway system, which becomes a sauna in the summertime and had no sweaty issues.

The Dryzzle is a classic rain jacket with an adjustable hood and hem, an exterior chest pocket and two hand pockets. Our tester appreciated the simplicity of its aesthetic, which worked in both urban and outdoor environments.

Best Budget Pick: REI Co-op Rainier Rain Jacket

Most rain jackets that cost less than $100 use a two-layer construction consisting of a shell fabric with a waterproof laminate bonded to its interior (it’s often white and feels plasticky to the touch). These jackets can be good at keeping you dry, though they tend not to be nearly as durable — we’ve seen some laminates begin to flake away after one or two seasons of hard use.

REI’s Rainier Rain Jacket has a 2.5-layer construction, which means that in addition to its recycled ripstop nylon shell and Peak waterproof laminate, it has a light interior lining that makes a protective sandwich that helps this jacket last more than a few seasons. We liked its other features, too, like a collar separate from the adjustable hood (which allowed for easy adjustments during shifting weather), though we did find it isn’t as lightweight or packable as some of the others on this list.

Our tester usually sticks to black and dark blues for their outerwear, but when testing out the sunshine-yellow Cielo raincoat, they started re-thinking their approach to colorful outerwear. That’s not only thanks to the happy hue — the jacket itself makes a compelling case for hoping for some more spring showers. The silhouette is marketed as “urban” but our tester wore it on trails, running errands and on wet travel days, and appreciated the super-soft fabric, a recycled polyester with a PFC-free DWR treatment.

The rain jacket has plenty of features besides its good looks: the full seam taping, two-way zipper and zippered hands pockets provide utility and the ability to customize fit, to an extent, along with the velcro cuff adjustments and internal waist cinch. The only feature our tester really didn’t like was the freestanding collar: in her opinion, it sits too close to the throat, and when fully zipped, pushes up against the chin. It’s a distracting and oddly fixed feature for such an adjustable jacket, but overall, she’d still recommend the Cielo to anyone looking for a little color, and a lot of coverage, in their day-to-day wardrobe.

Best Ultralight Upgrade: Snow Peak Light Packable Rain Jacket

If you’re a generally sweaty person, like me, you probably have trouble finding a rain jacket that you can wear in the warmer months. This is where the Light Packable Rain Jacket from Snow Peak comes in. Made from a breathable 3-layer recycled polyester, it is a stretchy, packable garment that is light as a feather (3 ounces, to be specific) — ensuring that you don’t overheat when rain comes on the warmest of days. The jacket is so paper-thin that you can see through it, which adds a bit of style that separates it from other, more utilitarian rain jackets. This doesn’t mean it doesn’t perform. Snow Peak straddles the line between style and function better than most, making extremely technical garments that look good with the rest of your wardrobe.

I tested this thing on numerous humid, warm, rainy days and never got wet, even though I could see my skin through the jacket. The two front pockets are perfectly placed, the hood covers my head with ease and it packs down small enough to carry around in a tote bag without even knowing it’s there.

All the jackets on this list will provide ample protection from a storm. But if you live in a particularly rainy area or one prone to epic deluges, Norrøna’s high-end mountaineering jacket is an industrial-strength option. “It kept me bone dry in the middle of a downpour on a bicycle commute riding into a headwind,” raves our reviewer. “Despite the blustery conditions, every part of my body the jacket covered stayed dry. If only that were the case with the rest!”

The key ingredient is the Gore-Tex Pro membrane, which employs a lightweight woven liner to minimize bulk, increase breathability and deliver reliable waterproofness. If you get too hot, lengthy pit zips help you dump heat (though they may let some rain in too), while articulated elbows, DWR-treated chest pockets and an adjustable, helmet-friendly storm hood round out the premium package.

Best for Urban Environments: Arc’teryx Beta Jacket

The Beta Series from Arc’teryx is the brand’s line of all-around mountain shells that are built to take on any adventure in (virtually) any conditions. While there is a broad range in price from the lower-tiered Betas to the top-tier Beta (the new Beta Down Insulated Jacket is a whopping $1,000), they all serve the same function: kick ass in rain, snow, sleet and wind. The Beta features everything you need without the frills: it’s made from highly breathable, waterproof Gore-Tex fabric with Gore C-Knit backer tech, keeping you cool and dry when things take a turn for the worse. It’s light enough, even, to be comfortable over a t-shirt on a relatively muggy summer day in the Northeast.

Whether you’re taking on a summer thunderstorm in the mountains or need to stave off winter showers, the Beta is adept. The fit is a bit roomy, which lends itself well to layering in the colder months. I was able to rock a down jacket underneath mine with no issues.

Best Stretch Rain Jacket: Black Diamond Stormline Stretch Rain Shell Jacket

Stretch is one of the biggest trends in rain jackets at the moment, but it’s easy to write off as a feature only available on jackets at the upper end of the price spectrum. The Black Diamond Stormline Stretch shatters those preconceived notions. We found it to be impossibly stretchy, while still offering the 100-percent waterproofing that you’d expect in a high-end rain jacket and comes in at a price of just $149. Bring your lunch to work for a week or two and you’ll have saved up enough for it.

Beyond price, Black Diamond brings some serious performance to the table with its BD. Dry waterproof breathable membrane. It beads water on par with more expensive jackets on this list, and while other features beyond stretch are sparse, you get far more than you pay for.

Best for Hiking: Exposure/2 Gore-Tex Paclite Jacket

Like many of the jackets to make our list this year, Mountain Hardwear’s Exposure/2 Gore-Tex Paclite consists of a fabric that’s not only lightweight but also slightly stretchy. Also superseding older jackets is the Exposure/2’s packability. Mountain Hardwear employed Gore-Tex’s Paclite Plus fabric, which combines these qualities with high durability in a two-layer construction.

The Exposure/2 doesn’t come with underarm vents, but its two oversized hand pockets are lined with mesh on the interior and can be left open to allow heat to escape. The jacket also has an exterior chest pocket and an adjustable hood and hem. At only 9.6 ounces, it’s one of the lighter jackets on this list and perfect for stashing in a backpack when the forecast isn’t confirmed. That factor, along with its durability, makes the Exposure/2 perfect for the trail .

For $9 more, you can also find an excellent minimalist hiking jacket in Outdoor Research’s Motive AscentShell ($199) . It’s slightly heavier at 10.9 ounces but plenty breathable and includes some stretch.

Best for Cycling: Rapha Commuter Jacket

Umbrellas aren’t an option for those who commute by bike, making a rain jacket all the more essential. Yes, any rain jacket will do, but Rapha included a docket of features that make its Commuter Jacket particularly adept at the task. One is a bike-specific pattern that includes a longer rear to protect from road splatter, and another is reflective detailing that beams back headlights for visibility. The jacket also features a hood small enough to fit beneath a helmet and a zipper slightly offset to minimize skin abrasion.

Best for Transitional Weather: Outerknown Apex Jacket by Kelly Slater

When the weather is transitional (aka, temperamental and moody) it can be hard to decide what to wear: should you chance it and wear your hoodie, hoping it doesn’t shower, or should you wear your bombproof, weather-proof parka, only to face sun for the entire day? For in-between days where weather protection is desired but not guaranteed to be needed, our tester likes to slip on the Apex Jacket from Outerknown. Its styling is modern, while utilitarian, and the four-way stretch fabric and water-repellent coating are a far cry from the rubbery, uncomfortable rain jackets of the past. Functional features like a packable hood and interior pocket increase its usefulness, even when it’s not raining. The material is so soft and comfortable, this easily became our tester’s go-to travel jacket — even when there’s no rain on the forecast.

Best Overall Lightweight Rain Jacket: Houdini The Orange Jacket

Snow Peak’s Light Packable Rain Jacket might be the best splurge lightweight rain jacket, but not everyone can afford (or wants to shell out for) a single layer costing upwards of $400. That’s where Houdini’s The Orange Jacket comes in: it weighs roughly 6.9 ounces for a men’s large, so it is slightly heavier — but The Orange is also $140 cheaper, making it much more approachable. It kept our tester dry for an hour-long bike ride in the rain last week, thanks to its ultralight, three-layer fully waterproof shell. A master class in minimalism, the Orange has just the essential features: it’s coated with a fluorocarbon-free DWR finish, has one chest pocket and a stash-able hood. Oh and the name? That refers to its size when conveniently packed down.

Most Innovative Rain Jacket: Columbia Outdry Extreme

• Membrane/Laminate: OutDry Extreme

Compared to other rain jackets, Columbia’s OutDry Extreme immediately looks different . That’s because OutDry Extreme, one of Columbia’s proprietary waterproofing technologies, is constructed differently than Gore-Tex, Dermizax or other commonly used barriers. Instead of layering the waterproof membrane between a liner and a shell, Columbia put it on the outside, where it’s exposed directly to the weather.

That construction has multiple consequences: the fabric-lined interior wicks and is left soft; the exterior feels more like a classic, slicker-style raincoat that won’t wet out (when a coat’s shell fabric gets saturated). It also means that the seams are taped on the outside, which adds to the jacket’s unique look. It also has two large pockets and underarm zips for venting. The OutDry Extreme doesn’t follow the most recent trend in rain jackets — it doesn’t have any stretch — but it’s still comfortable, breathes quite well and is impenetrable to rain.

Best Softshell Rain Jacket: Rab Kinetic 2.0

If you’re still wary of whether a softshell rain jacket can indeed keep you dry outside, Rab’s Kinetic 2.0 will be the one to convince you. Its recycled outer fabric feels almost T-shirt-like, but wear it in a downpour (we did) and watch water bead right off. That fabric enables lots of stretch and breathability, too, which makes this jacket great for faster-paced activities. We also liked the elasticized hood liner, which makes a snug fit so that when you turn your head, you don’t wind up staring at the inside of your coat (it helps when you’re looking for traffic before crossing a road or merging on a bike). The Kinetic 2.0 doesn’t have many features beyond that — most notably, two oversized, harness-compatible pockets.

Best for Hunting: Sitka Dew Point Jacket

Stalking game often requires straying off-trail, where brushing up against moisture-laden vegetation can leave you as doused as standing in a storm. Waterproofing is essential; it doesn’t have to be overly bright or bulky, though. Sitka built the Dew Point as such with Gore-Tex’s three-layer fabric equipped with a C-Knit backing that keeps it soft instead of sticky. The jacket is more minimal than a lot of other hunting rain gear — it weighs 12.5 ounces — but it still has pack-friendly zippered pockets, pit zips for venting and an adjustable hood.

Located in southwestern Russia, on the banks of the Donets river near the border with Ukraine, Belgorod has a population of only a few-hundred thousand, and an industrial aesthetic that largely hearkens back to Soviet times. With this being said, Belgorod is one of Russia's fastest growing cities. It's also almost completely lacking in tourists, which makes it the perfect place to have a truly authentic experience. Marvel at an 18th-Century Cathedral

The most obvious antidote to the decidedly Soviet aesthetic of Belgorod's city center? That would be Smolensky Cathedral, a beautiful but humble Russian Orthodox church that dates back to the 18th century. Clad in a turquoise-colored paint that looks great during any season and under every light, this is definitely among the top things to do in Belgorod. The cathedral is still open to parishioners daily, allowing visitors to marvel at the interior as well.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side

Another way to transcend the concrete housing blocks that definite Belgorod's cityscape is to take a more figurative approach. Namely, the lions and tigers and bears that call Belgorod Zoo home are, in spirit if not in reality, a perfect antidote to the feeling of being back in Soviet times, which might occasionally befall you elsewhere.

Have a Scream in Central Park

Known officially, in Russian, as Tsentral'nyy Park Kul'tury I Otdykha Imeni V.i. Lenina, Belgorod's answer to Central Park is neither as grand nor as well-manicured as its New York counterpart. However, this green space isn't just for relaxing. In fact, it's home to a number of roller coasters and other kid-friendly rides, which make it a great spot for the whole family to have a thrill—although you can definitely chill, too.

Watch a Battle Unfold in Miniature

The Battle of Kursk was one of the decisive dramas of World War II for the Soviets in their firsts against Nazi tyranny. The hostile conditions that underlied this battle, which took place not far from Belgorod, have thankfully let up significantly. However, if you visit the aptly-named Belgorod Diorama Museum , you can observe a painstaking model of the battle, from start to finish, that local artists have put together.

Admire Terrific Taxidermy

Belgorod's has an interesting history—and not just related to military conflicts. Belgorod's history, human and animal alike, are on display at the Belgorod State Historical Museum ; including taxidermied bodies of animals that make their home in surrounding Belgorod Oblast.

Learn About Vladimir Mayakovsky

Although the Belgorod Literary Museum features the work of a number of writers, the focal point of its exhibition is Vladimir Mayakovsky, who originally hailed from Georgia for what it's worth. Even if you can't read Russian, it's fascinating to learn about the story of Mayakovsky, who was a renowned writer before the Russian Revolution, and who used his considerable skill to stealthily craft satire about Soviet communism until his death by suicide in 1930.

Enjoy a Lush Botanical Garden

Construction of buildings in Belgorod might've taken a utilitarian approach, but the botanical garden at Belgorod State University is anything but. With expansive exhibitions both outdoors and indoors, which allows plants that couldn't otherwise survive in Russia to bloom and thrive, the garden is a veritable explosion of color and lushness, and a trip there might make you forget exactly where you are.

Like much of the rest of Russia, Belgorod has cold, wet and even snowy weather for much of the year. Discover Different Churches

The aforementioned Smolensky Cathedral is probably the most traditionally Russian counter-example to the Soviet architecture that otherwise dominates the city, but there are other options as well. Churches such as the Church of the Holy Martyrs Faith are particularly atmospheric, as their use of unpainted wood evokes the forests that surround Belgorod city.

Take a Beach Day (if It's Warm)

While it's not a typical beach day, one of the best things to do in Belgorod on a sunny day, is to head to the shores of the Donets River. Aim to visit the portion of the river that forms forms a sort of lake just northeast of the city center. It's is neither tropical nor particularly idyllic, but it's an ideal spot for some R&R by the water.

Continue on to Ukraine—Or Not

Because Belgorod sits near the Russian border with Ukraine, many travelers who pass through the city (and, in spite of all the things to do in Belgorod, many visits are doing just that) are ultimately bound for Ukraine or the Crimean Peninsula.
