The #1 Bestseller! Twelve-year-old Danny Walker may be the smallest kid on the basketball court – but don’t tell him that. Because no one plays with more heart or court sense. But none of that matters when he is cut from his local travel team, the very same team his father led to national prominence as a boy. Danny’s father, still smarting from his own troubles, knows Danny isn’t the only kid who was cut for the wrong reason, and together, this washed-up former player and a bunch of never-say-die kids prove that the heart simply cannot be measured. For fans of The Bad News Bears, Hoosiers, the Mighty Ducks, and Mike Lupica’s other New York Times bestselling novels Heat, The Underdogs, and Million-Dollar Throw, here is a book that proves that when the game knocks you down, champions stand tall.

Summary and Study Guide

Travel Team is a young adult novel by Mike Lupica published in 2004. Lupica is a former newspaper columnist with experience writing sports commentary for the New York Daily News. In addition to his young adult novels, Lupica has written several books for adults, including autobiographies co-written with Reggie Jackson and Bill Parcells. Lupica has also appeared on ESPN and on several sports-oriented radio shows. This guide refers to the 2006 edition published by Puffin Books, a division of the Penguin Books Young Readers Group.

Plot Summary

Travel Team begins with Danny Walker , a 12-year-old who is short for his age. Danny has just failed to make the Middletown Vikings, the seventh-grade travel basketball team and an activity made popular by his former professional basketball player father, Richie Walker . Richie played for the Golden State Warriors before a car accident ended his career. As Danny practices in his driveway after receiving the bad news, Richie appears. Their relationship is strained; Richie typically lives in Las Vegas, having left Danny’s mother, Ali. Danny tells him that he didn’t make the team because Mr. Ross , the president of the bank and the president of Middletown Basketball, had told the evaluators during tryouts that he wanted a tall team that year. Ali tells him later that night that Richie may stick around for a while.

The next day at school, everyone knows that Danny didn’t make the team. His best friend Will tries to cheer him up. Danny considers not doing basketball that year, but his mom tells him he must. His friend Tess likewise encourages him to stick with it, even if it’s just to spite the dads who underestimated him. Danny plays in a pick-up game with Mr. Ross’s son Ty, and the two talented players mesh well together. Richie watches from afar, giving Mr. Ross a hard time. The two had played on the travel team together when they were young, and Richie believes that Ross still holds a grudge that Richie became famous and he didn’t.

A few days later, Richie announces that he’s starting his own travel team, eventually called The Warriors. He admits many of the boys who didn’t make Ross’s team. He emphasizes that it’s important that they have fun while playing. Danny is skeptical of the team at first, not believing that they’ll be any good. Eventually, Richie invites Colby Danes, a seventh-grade girl, to join them. The boys dislike it but soon see how good Colby is.

The Warriors lose the first two games of the season. At the next practice, Richie shows up hungover. Ali admonishes him, and Richie adjusts his behavior. During the next game, Danny has the chance to score the winning point, but he misses feels bad for disappointing his team. They lose another game, but the team is getting better and getting along. When they go out to celebrate, Richie doesn’t show up because he is in a car accident. While Richie survives, he’s out for the rest of the season. He emphasizes that he hadn’t been drinking. Richie later confides that, while no one knew, he had been drinking when he had his first accident, and he and the police officer who found him covered it up. However, he has decided to stop feeling sorry for himself.

Richie suggests that Danny coach the team since he’s out for the season. Ali is skeptical at first but then gets on board. Tess also joins the team as its manager. Mr. Ross briefly tries to lure Danny away from the team by offering him a spot on the Vikings but Danny refuses. They win their next game, and Danny begins to realize how Mr. Ross and some of the other coaches don’t seem to value their players as much as they value winning.

The Warriors are slated to play the Vikings, and Danny has several players over to strategize. Tess kisses him on the cheek. Mr. Ross’s son joins the Warriors for the first playoff game, which pits the Warriors against the Vikings. Richie comes from the hospital to watch the game. Once Mr. Ross sees his son on the court, he decides to stop coaching and joins Richie in the stands. The game is close, but the Warriors score in the last few seconds to win, and Danny is lifted on his teammates’ shoulders.

Written by Callie Labrador

Danny Walker is the best basketball player at St. Patrick's School and one of the two best players in the whole of Middletown. Blessed with good basketball genes - his father, Richie, was drafted in the first round of the NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors - Danny was unfortunately not blessed with great height and is not only short for basketball but short for his age. When he is left out of his travel basketball team because they want to "go bigger" this year, Danny is understandably frustrated and upset, especially when his being left out becomes the talk of the school. Danny's father comes to the house the day that the basketball team is announced, trying to cheer him up. He has been a mostly absent parent but Danny loves his visits even though he knows they will be short. This visit, though, is different and Richie tells Ali, Danny's mother, that he wants to start a new travel team and coach Danny himself.

Danny's best friend Will Stoddard agrees to play but at first the rest of the team is mediocre at best. Richie tries hard to coach them up to standard but the only player on the team with any real ability is Danny, who by now feels like he is on the wrong team entirely and wishes he was still a part of his old team, the Vikings.

As they are waiting for the girls' basketball team to finish playing Richie starts to watch their star player, Colby Danes, and after speaking with her father invites her to join the team. Danny aside she is by far the most talented player on the team. Richie manages to find a space in the travel league for the Warriors but despite the combined talents of Danny and Colby, they lose their first few games. Danny is dejected and almost gives up but his father changes his mind, aided by Danny's special friend Tess Hewitt who cannot bear to see Danny feeling downhearted.

History repeats itself when Richie, whose basketball career was brutally ended as a result of a car accident, loses control of his car and is rushed to the hospital. Anxious to avoid letting the team down he persuades their favorite coach from summer basketball to coach the Warriors for one game but afterwards they are back to square one - coach-less, and with a game to play. This time, the plan devised revolves around Danny who will be the team's coach, although his mother will actually be listed as the official coach on League documentation; Tess assumes the role of team manager.

Danny also has help in his coaching role from a surprising source : Ty Ross . Despite the fact he was injured as a result of playing Danny's team, Ty still regrets that he and Danny were ever split up and finds the Warriors a much more enjoyable team to be around than the Vikings. He draws up some plays for the Warriors who end up winning the game, but his father, who coaches the Vikings, is furious, verbally billing Ty after the game. Later Danny receives an instant message on his laptop from Ty telling him he wants to play on the Warriors.

Even though his arm is still injured Ty manages to play in the penultimate play-off game against his former teame that, if they win, will take the Warriors to the finals. Danny is overjoyed to see Richie, on crutches, come into the auditorium with Ali who picked him up from the hospital just in time for the game. Still the pride of Middletown, Richie is given a standing ovation. The game is close and hard fought, and Colby, the third best player on the team now Ty has joined it, is close to fouling out. It is a tense, hard and foul-filled game which Danny feels slipping away from them. When he and Ty look over to Richie's section they are amazed to see that Ty's father has taken the seat next to him and they are watching the game together. The boys realize that if Mr Ross extending an olive branch to Richie is possible, then anything is possible, and in true underdog fashion they win the game.

After celebrations, the Walkers go home and feeling bolstered by the victory, and the upcoming championship game, Danny measures himself against the height marks on the wall at the back of his closet and finds that he has grown almost an inch and a half! It also seems likely that his father will be staying in Middletown, making Danny happier even than winning the championship could do.

Travel Team Questions and Answers

The Question and Answer section for Travel Team is a great resource to ask questions, find answers, and discuss the novel.

Did the Warriors win the championship in the end and if they did who did they beat

The boys realize that if Mr Ross extending an olive branch to Richie is possible, then anything is possible, and in true underdog fashion they win the game. The Warriors beat Middletown.

What had Jeff Ross done after the tryouts?

Jeff Ross called Danny personally to tell him that he'd made the team. Danny's parents were old friends of his.

Who is a static character?

I might consider Ali Walker. She is still strong at the end of the book.

Michael or Mike Lupica (born 11th May, 1952) is, probably, the most popular and best-known sports columnists in United States. He started his newspaper career at 23 years only with the New York Post in 1975 and at that time he covered the games of New York Knicks. In the year of ’77 he was the youngest columnist ever for the prestigious Daily News where he presently writes as many as 4 syndicated columns per week. In his illustrious career he has successfully worked for The National & the New York Newsday. Since 1987 he has been writing a column for the Esquire magazine. His works have been published in Parade, Playboy, Tennis, Sport Magazine, the World Tennis et al. Mike Lupica has also been a regular on the Sunday morning show – The Sports Reporters – that airs on ESPN. In 2003 he bagged the coveted Jim Murray Award from the National Football Foundation.

Lupica has written several fiction and non-fiction books and the majority of these books have been a bestseller. He has also co-written a number of non-fiction books in his career. In fact, he is #1 bestselling author for the books for young readers and his works include Fantasy League, Heat, and Million-Dollar Throw etc.

Autobiographies

Lupica has co-written autobiographies with Bill Parcells and Reggie Jackson and has also collaborated with noted author, William Goldman.

Mike is also a noted novelist and his famous mysteries include the fictional NYC TV reporter Peter Finley. One of his books, Dead Air, was nominated for the prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Award. He has also written a wonderful novel for the young readers titled, Travel Team. Among his novels, Bump and Run & Wild Pitch were bestsellers and deserve special mention here.

Heat is a novel for young adults that were published in 2006. The events of the book take place in Bronx, NY. Michael Arroyo, a highly gifted baseball player, is the main character of this novel. The coaches from all the teams say that Michael is so good in the game that it is hard to believe that he is just 12 years of age. But things are not rosy for him as he has no parents and his birth certificate is lying in his native home in Cuba. The onus lies on him, his best friend Manny and his brother Carlos to prove to the world that he is really a 12 year old boy. As the book progresses we learn that Michael meets a beautiful and mysterious girl named Elle. Also he has to lie to almost everyone he meets otherwise he will get separated from his brother. His loving brother is just 2 months away from turning 18 years which will make him a legal guardian. Michael remembers his father from time to time who actually died just a few months before the plot of the story unfolds. Michael’s father was a great man and always encouraged him to do well in almost everything and always wished that his son excels in baseball.

TRAVEL TEAM

Travel Team is about a young basketball player named Danny Walker. The story revolves around how this young boy was rejected from the travel team of his town as he was a bit short. He became so dejected that he felt like giving up on basketball but his friends and family members egged him on to get on the YMCA League. But his dad who was a professional basketball player himself decided to start their own travel team. They qualify for the league but their first few games they are beaten quite comprehensively. In fact, they lose all their matches. The majority of the book is about how they try and overcome from being one of the worst teams in the league.

The plot of this fascinating book is set in a small town on the east coast. The town is basically known for its basketball as Danny’s dad was instrumental in leading his 7th grade travel team to the ESPN championship. So Danny decided that he should follow the footsteps of his famous father. Will is Danny’s best friend in the book and essays a magnificent supporting role. Ty Ross is the best player in the town and we also get to know, through the course of the book, that Danny’s parents are now divorced but they come together to help Danny in his endeavor.

Travel Team is definitely not a typical sports story as it follows the passion of a 4’4” teen who just wants to play basketball and be good at it. The reader can easily relate to many events that have been described in the book and many high school teens can easily connect with the character of the book, Danny. Lupica, through this book, tries to explain that irrespective of the difficulties and adversities, one should never ever give up on a dream even if it seems a bit far-fetched.

This is truly one of the better books of Mike Lupica and it is no surprise that this novel was a bestseller. There is too much suspense in this book and the readers are never sure how this book will end. This book ends in a real cliffhanger and proves why Mike Lupica is still a highly respected and celebrated author in the US and elsewhere.

BOOKS TO MOVIES

A few of the books of Lupica have been turned into a TV series or movie. Dead Air, for example, became a CBS TV movie – Money, Power, Murder – for which he wrote the teleplay.

TV & RADIO WORK

Since 1988 Mike has been on of the rotating experts on the ESPN Show – The Sports Reporters. He also hosted a chat program on ESPN 2 titled The Mike Lupica Show but it was largely unsuccessful. He is also a recurring guest on Good Morning America and CBS Morning News.

PERSONAL LIFE

Mike spent his childhood in New Hampshire and graduated from the prestigious Bishop Guertin High School. He first came into limelight as a sportswriter and wrote the column for the much popular Esquire magazine for a decade and at presents writes regularly for Travel + Leisure Golf. He now lives in Connecticut with his wife , 3 sons and a daughter.

Hi Mike Just finished reading Broken Trust. I commend you on keeping the series going as I have read every one of the Spencer, Sunny Randall and Jesse stone novels. You have captured the characters just as Robert B Parker created them. Thank you so much and keep up the Great writing.

Is Mr. Lupica going to continue writing Jesse Stone books and, if so, when may we expect his next one? Also, the last one that I read was “Fallout”. Has there been another since that one?

Loved Robert B Parker’s work; his heirs picked the right author to add to his titles. Thanks!

I’m looking for a Mike Lupica book for my 11 y/o grandson…about hockey. Has Mike written such a book? If so, can you tell me the title?? Thanks.
