small ship river cruises france

The Champagne region of France has long been considered one of the greatest heartlands of Europe and has become a mecca for those who appreciate the best in gastronomy, thanks to its world-famous sparkling wine.

The region starts 75 miles from Paris, featuring numerous vineyards and champagne houses including Moët et Chandon. With stunning locations including the cities of Reims, Meaux, and Epernay, and the River Marne, you’ll find stunning horizons to explore as you enjoy some of the best food and drink in the country. Why not try creamy Brie and Coulommiers cheeses and mustards while you are there?

For passengers eager to explore the rich history of the area, you’ll find the finest medieval cathedrals in Europe, one of which is where 30 Kings of France were crowned, including most famously, Charles VII, orchestrated by the loyal but subsequently martyred Joan of Arc. Discover the beauty of the region with a river cruise in Champagne.

Champagne Cruise Highlights

Your classic cruise will give you the chance to explore the true beauty of the region while understanding its history and sampling some of the finest wine in the world. You can from two different classic cruises to give you a true insight into the region.

The first is the Panache cruise. For this cruise, you’ll start in Paris and arrive at your luxury barge moored in Châlons-en-Champagne. With a champagne welcome, you’ll then set off and cruise along the Canal Lateral à la Marne to Tours-sur-Marne. Here you’ll visit Reims and the 800-year-old Reims cathedral, before exploring the grand squares of the city and the elegant shopping arcades.

A visit to one of the best champagne houses in the world, Moët et Chandon, is a must for your trip. Founded in 1743, you’ll be taken on a guided tour of the underground cellars and finish off your visit here with a tasting of their more renowned vintages. Another private champagne tasting will take you to the boutique Grand Cru winery of Frerejean Frères, with a gourmet private lunch in the salon of the family domaine.

Your journey along the Marne will take you to Dormans, which is a water mill and World War One memorial. The 42-acre World War One American cemetery at Belleau Wood gives you the opportunity to learn about one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War. From here, your itinerary includes a visit to La Maison Pannier for a tour and private tasting. The final mooring at Château-Thierry gives you some of the most incredible views, as the town overlooks the river.

The classic La Nouvelle Etoile cruise is ideal for those looking for a different way to explore the region. Starting in Paris, you’ll cruise by Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower for some incredible photo opportunities. Travelling along the River Marne, you’ll be taken to the Chateaux of Vaux-le-Vicomte, before exploring the Meaux cathedral.

Meaux’s reputation proceeds it, making your trip to a local cheese maker of “Brie de Meaux” well worth it. Sample cheese and wine from the cellar before cruising to La Ferte. From here, you’ll travel to Chateau Thierry, the scene of American battles during World War One.

On to Reims, where you’ll visit the Cathedral and the Musee de la Reddition, which is well-known for its historical significance. Next is a trip to the Abbey of Hautvilliers, where you can discover the history of champagne and learn more about monk Dom Perignon’s first champagne. You’ll enjoy a meandering journey to the village of Cumieres, just outside of Epernay, where you’ll enjoy a private wine tasting.

Prices quoted here are often dependent on currency fluctuations. Please check with (01432 507450 or [email protected] ) for the very latest price, which may well be cheaper than the one advertised here.

Guests are met in Paris and transferred to the barge moored in the heart of Paris for a wonderful champagne welcome. Time to relax as we cruise past Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower. This evening, enjoy your first of many gourmet meals on board.

This morning we cruise out of Paris onto the River Marne.  After lunch onboard, we visit the magnificent Chateaux of Vaux-le-Vicomte. Rejoin the barge in Meaux in time for a stroll and a visit to the cathedral.  Dinner on board.

After breakfast, we visit a local cheese maker of ”Brie de Meaux”.  Enjoy a tasting of the various Brie’s of a master cheese maker, along with wines from his excellent cellar.  This afternoon we cruise up the river Marne to La Ferte.  Dinner on board.

We are now in the Champagne region and on our way to Charly-sur-Marne. Stop to enjoy the wonderful champagne of a small family vineyard before an afternoon cruise to Chateau Thierry, the scene of American battles in World War I. Optional visit to Belleau Wood battlefield.  Dinner on board.

Enjoy breakfast this morning as the Marne takes us through covered hills dotted with small wine villages to the delightful little town of Damery.  Lunch on board before our drive to Reims. Here we visit the Cathedral and the Musee de la Reddition where Eisenhower had his Map Room and where the ending of WW2 was signed. Dinner on board.

After breakfast, we visit the Abbey of Hautvilliers, where the monk Dom Perignon first made champagne. Upon return, we set off for our last cruise to the village of Cumieres, just outside of Epernay.  Lunch onboard before our afternoon visit to the cellars of Moet et Chandon for a private wine tasting.  Captains Farewell Dinner on board.

After breakfast, disembark La Nouvelle Etoile and transfer to Paris.

This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change. On alternate weeks the cruise is in the reverse direction.

Vessel Type: Hotel Barge

Length: 127 feet

Passenger Capacity: 8

Kir Royale, the latest addition to our fleet, has a fascinating history. Converted to a beach landing craft in World War Two, she was sunk before being refloated and eventually transformed into a hotel barge. She now cruises the beautiful region of Champagne with its plethora of vineyards stretching across the rolling hillsides as far as the eye can see. There will be plenty of opportunities to sample the sparkling wine to which the region has given its name with private tastings at renowned champagne houses.

Her saloon is spacious and airy and has been the subject of a complete refit with bespoke furniture and a bar, piano and separate dining area. The four generous and individually decorated suites are each over 200 sq ft in area and are also newly renovated. They have ultra-modern en suite bathrooms with his and hers sinks, and a luxurious oversized rainforest shower.

Outside, there is a small forward sun deck to watch the progress of the barge, a large and sheltered aft sun deck with covered dining area, sun loungers and heated spa pool, plus an upper observation deck with a panoramic view. Imbued with an air of style and elegance, Kir Royale is a great choice for discovering Champagne – whether you’re cruising alongside the rolling vineyards, or perhaps on a private tour, savouring the wines, history and culture of this famous region.

small ship river cruises france

By adopting the “French chic” spirit, the ship’s design emphasizes elegant and graphic classicism, inspired by the friendship between Coco Chanel and Auguste Renoir. Powder pink colours subtly alternate with dark grey tones which provide the ship with a warm atmosphere.

The cabins are spread over two decks: on the upper deck, they have large bay windows with French balconies; on the main deck, they have large windows. Located on the upper deck, the restaurant, where all meals are served during the trip, offers delicate cuisine in a refined setting, where large bay windows allow you to fully enjoy the panorama. On this same deck is also the lounge / bar with a dance floor. Comfortable sun loungers are provided on the sun deck with a large shaded area, the ideal place to relax and admire the surrounding landscapes.

Itinerary of seine river cruise from paris to normandy.

small ship river cruises france

There’s a huge choice when it comes to cruising the Seine, with many trips beginning in Paris , where you’ll see all the major sights – including the Eiffel Tower , the Louvre Museum, the Champs Élysées , the Cathedral of Notre-Dame and the Arc de Triomphe . It’s a great way to get a taste of this most romantic of capital cities.

Leaving the scenic delights of Paris behind, you’ll soon find that Normandy is just as charming. Stopping at Vernon, you’re just a stone’s throw from the beautiful house and gardens of Claude Monet at Giverny. Back in Vernon, meanwhile, you’ll discover an endearing town lined with half-timbered houses medieval streets and a lovely 12th century gothic church.

Les Andelys

Set in simply idyllic countryside on a chalk cliff-lined bend of the Seine, Les Andelys also boasts a couple of historical gems – the ruins of Château Gaillard , a medieval military masterpiece built by Richard the Lionheart in 1196; and the Notre Dame Collegiate Church, dating back to the 13th century.

No visit to Normandy would be complete without a stop in one of the most historic sites in France, Rouen . Crammed with stunning Gothic architecture, including the splendid cathedral, you can also visit the main market place where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. It’s an ancient city with a turbulent past, but it also has a great deal of art and culture to discover. From Caudebec-en-Caux, down river from Rouen, there are tours to the Normandy landing beaches as well as to the 7th century Jumièges Abbey, a ruined monastery that is one of the oldest in the world.

Arriving in the impossibly pretty coastal town of Honfleur , you’ll immediately see why it provided much of the inspiration for Monet’s paintings and is celebrated as Eric Satie ‘s birthplace. Tall, colourful houses line the harbour, while narrow streets wind their way through the ancient town. Honfleur is also a great base for day trips along the Normandy coast, including the glamorous seaside resort of Deauville and the stunning cliffs of Étretat.

Cruising the Seine has something for everyone, from superb culture and shopping, to natural beauty, history and world class food and drink.

Beautiful Seine Places

The Louvre in Paris at dusk

How much does it cost to take a Seine River cruise in France?

Prices for river cruises can vary widely because they are based on a variety of things: the time of year, the qualities of the ship itself, the suite type that you choose and on which deck level, and whether alcoholic drinks and excursions are included.

The top luxury 7 day cruises can be had for around 9,000 GBP per person, including a choice of immersive excursions each day, whereas the less luxurious ships offer suites from around 1,500 GBP per person with extras for drinks and excursions and so on. It’s important to get in touch with our partners in the UK and the US to discover the differences between each cruise line, and which accommodations will suit you best. And there are always great bargains for early booking and last-minute cruises.

Where do Seine River cruises leave from?

Most river ships moor up at one of the two major ports on the left bank (the southern bank) with departures from Quai de Grenelle or Quai André Citroën. However, depending on the cruise and package purchased, Charles de Gaulle airport could be your pick-up point or even, in some cases in the UK, from your home!

Where does the Seine River cruise start and end?

The size of the ship determines its precise destination when leaving from Paris. Although all river cruise ships head for Honfleur, some river cruise ships are too large to enter the harbour there and must dock on the Seine itself, opposite the port of Le Havre. Honfleur is a beautifully picturesque town, its harbour surrounded by the tall, multi-coloured dwellings of centuries past, and it’s the starting point for visits to the poignant war-time beaches of Normandy.

A cultural cruise following in the footsteps of the Impressionists

Aboard the MS Renoir for a cruise on the theme of the Impressionist painters - Paris

Reading time: 0 min Published on 20 September 2024

Besides painting, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and Auguste Renoir have something else in common: they all fell in love with the treasures of the regions of Normandy and Ile-de-France. It’s your turn to be whisked back to the era of the Impressionist painters on a romantic cruise along the Seine. On this week-long bucolic trip along the river, you’ll be exploring the villages and unique scenery that inspired the greatest artworks from the painters of the Impressionist movement. Hop aboard in Paris and sail to Honfleur.

Day 1: A stroll around Paris, the capital of the arts

The Musée d’Orsay is where the CroisiEurope cruise on the theme of the Impressionist painters begins - Paris

Your cultural quest in the footsteps of the master Impressionist painters begins in the heart of Paris, the ultimate destination for romance and artistic creativity.

Start with a stroll around the iconic Jardin des Tuileries, a lush-green oasis, before then heading to the famous  Musée d’Orsay  which houses the most extensive collection of artworks by Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Pissarro. These painters are well-known across the globe for their revolutionary approach to depicting light and colour.

Then you’ll be sailing along the river as the sun goes down, as you listen to a captivating talk from passionate experts about this movement, including how it first began and how it differs to other artistic movements. This first evening will really plunge you into the world of Impressionism.

Day 2: Barbizon, the painters’ village

Around sixty kilometres south-east of Paris, on the edge of Fontainebleau forest, the village of Barbizon awaits you for an unforgettable interlude. This charming little village is the beating heart of the pre-Impressionist movement and served as a place of refuge and muse for many painters and artists on a quest for inspiration in this idyllic place. Go on a bucolic stroll in the footsteps of these artists, exploring all the hidden little places around the village where some major artworks took shape.

Stop by the  Musée des Peintres de Barbizon for a fascinating tour inside the authentic Auberge Ganne. There’s a wide range of cultural activities and talks here so you can really feel the excitement of the artistic world back then. The day ends on a high note with an enjoyable evening as you head towards your next stop.

Day 3: (Re)discovering Monet and Paris

The Claude Monet room at the Musée Marmottan - Paris

For the third day of your adventure on the water, it's time for another cultural experience in Paris! On the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, the   Musée Marmottan   Monet is a 19th century architectural gem that houses the biggest collection of Claude Monet’s work in the world, as well as some wonderful artworks from other talented artists such as Eugène Delacroix, Boudin, Manet, Degas, Pissarro, and Gauguin. Just take in the magic of their paintbrushes.

Head to Mantes-la-Jolie at sunset, before beginning your exploration of the charming little village of Giverny in Normandy.

Day 4: The stunning Giverny, Claude Monet’s muse

Fondation Monet in Giverny - Normandy

75 kilometres north of Paris, come and explore Giverny, a wonderful treasure of Normandy that Claude Monet fell in love with. It was in this picturesque village that the master Impressionist painter produced his very last artworks up until 1926. Plunge into  the world of Monet    as you visit his colourful house, legendary studio, and then wander around the amazing bucolic gardens surrounding the house, where he drew inspiration for some of his most famous paintings. Admire the scenery all around where every flower, every reflection on the water appears to have been touched with Monet’s paintbrush.

If you have enough time left, go and visit the  Musée des Impressionnismes in Giverny to really make the most of your time here, before getting back on the boat to head to Rouen.

Day 5: Rouen, capital of Impressionism

Taking some time out in Rouen - Normandy

Welcome to Rouen and its beautiful, colourful narrow streets. Once your boat has docked in the harbour, go on a guided tour on the theme of the Impressionist painters. Rouen goes by the nickname “the town of a hundred bell towers” and is well-known essentially for its  Notre-Dame Cathedral, a Gothic-style treasure that captivated the imagination of countless Impressionist artists including Claude Monet who devoted a series of 30 paintings to this monument.

Don’t miss the  Musée des Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts Museum), a venue that houses a superb collection of Impressionist artworks. And for a final, gourmet touch to your adventure, stop by the  Brasserie Paul , a real institution where scholars and artists would once get together.

Day 6: Honfleur and the coastal scenery of the Côte d'Albâtre

Honfleur port

It’s time to drop anchor in the pretty harbour of Honfleur. The range of pastel shades in this coastal town captivated the imagination of many an Impressionist painter. For this sixth day, come and embrace the enchanting atmosphere at the old harbour in this medieval town. Wander around the narrow streets, past the atypical little houses, walking in the footsteps of some of the greatest Impressionist painters. Finally, stop by the  Musée Eugène Boudin to admire the remarkable collection of artworks there.

Continue your exploration in the afternoon and admire the beautiful cliffs along the Côte d’Albâtre, a few kilometres away from Le Havre.  Just take in the spectacular sight of these white cliffs and the stunning light bouncing off them. They have been an endless source of inspiration for Impressionist painters.

Day 7: Time to explore Le Havre

André-Malraux Museum of Modern Art in Le Havre

Your cruise comes to an end as you arrive in Honfleur, but that does not mean your Impressionist adventure ends there. Make the most of this 7th day for one last historic and cultural excursion to Le Havre, Claude Monet’s muse for his famous artwork, “Impression, Sunrise”. You can easily get there by bus, and on the way you’ll have a chance to admire the magnificent scenery, especially as you cross the Normandy bridge and pass through the picturesque landscapes of the Seine Estuary Natural Reserve.

When you get to Le Havre, venture inside the  André Malraux Museum of Modern Art , where you’ll come across other treasures from the Impressionist artistic movement. Then, round off your trip with an exceptional culinary experience at the  Jean Luc Tartarin Michelin-starred restaurant, well-known for its exceptional dishes and great atmosphere.
