11 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Roswell, NM

Written by Becca Blond and Michael Law Updated Feb 22, 2024

Roswell throws its extraterrestrial obsession right at you the moment you reach its city limits. Whether you enter from the north or south, it's impossible to miss the bold neon flying saucer-themed welcome signs rising in each direction from the stark desert landscape.

An alien streetlight in Roswell

It's been more than 75 years since the "Roswell Incident," when a UFO supposedly crashed here in July 1947, an event some say the U.S. military covered up. But this small southeastern New Mexican town is still cashing in on the alien theme, attracting hard-core believers and skeptics alike in search of the truth (or lack thereof).

The town and many of the local businesses take advantage of the UFO phenomenon by plastering quirky images of aliens on storefronts and lampposts. A giant alien holds up the Dunkin Donuts sign, the McDonald's is shaped like a flying saucer, and another ET creature beckons you at Dominos.

But the small town has a deeper history to discover. Roswell has five museums and plenty of things to do nearby. If you don't care to prove the existence of extraterrestrial life, check out the outdoor attractions. Bottomless Lakes State Park is home to a series of small but very deep lakes, known as cenotes (like what you find in Mexico's Riviera Maya) in collapsed limestone caves that you can swim in. There are also hiking and biking trails and plentiful bird-watching opportunities at the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

International UFO Museum and Research Center

When the International UFO Museum and Research Center opened in 1992, few imagined that it would become such an international attraction for tourists and UFO fanatics. One of the most powerful parts of the museum is how it is organized. With no attempt to sway the visitor one way or another, the museum encourages people to question, doubt, research, and learn on their own. Exhibits and information are not limited to the " Roswell Incident ," and the museum also presents information about alleged abductions, crop circles, and the infamous Blue Book .

If you want a unique sightseeing experience, take one of the many Roswell UFO tours led by various groups in the area, which typically visit notorious sites like Building 84 at the Roswell Army Air Field , the site that many believe once held the remains of the downed UFO and its occupants.

Welcome to Roswell sign

UFO Spacewalk

The UFO Spacewalk is just down the street from the UFO Museum and is another one of Roswell's most popular alien-themed tourist attractions. The creation of Bryan Ward, it's a trippy blacklight experience that you walk through.

Upon entrance, you'll be "beamed up by an alien spaceship" (Ward's words) and taken to another planet where you'll encounter extraterrestrial creatures, galaxies, and other special effects before exiting into a gallery filled with Ward's neon-hued, space art. There is a small fee to enter this attraction.

Alien Zone: Area 51

The Alien Zone: Area 51 is also located on Main Street downtown and where enthusiasts come to snap social media pics and videos. Pay a small admission fee and you can take photos of yourself dining with an alien or hopping on the back of its motorcycle.

Signs Around Town

You'll also want to take pictures at the Roswell welcome signs on either side of town. The sign on the north side is the most iconic, a large neon green with red letter affair with a flying saucer perched on its edge like a hat. The sign on the south side of town is sponsored by the Roswell Chamber of Commerce and features an extraterrestrial family getting a jumpstart for their spaceship from a local farmer.

Finally, don't miss a trip to the town McDonald's. The kid's play area here is shaped like a flying saucer and lit up neon at night and this is the only space-themed McDonald's in the world.

Roswell Museum and Art Center

Featuring exhibits on the history and art traditions of the American Southwest, the Roswell Museum and Art Center hosts a fine array of sculptures, artifacts, prints, paintings, and photographs. Originally a product of the New Deal Work Projects Administration (WPA), the museum's collection includes works from early modernists, the Taos and Santa Fe art colonies, Native American arts, WPA art, and Spanish colonial works.

Along the Pecos River, these lakes are really sinkholes (also known as cenotes) , made from ancient limestone caves that have collapsed into themselves and then filled with water fed by underground seeps.

Lake Lea is the only body of water here that allows swimming . The water is cold, but on a scorching hot summer day feels super refreshing. Lake Lea is the deepest of the lakes with depths up to 90 feet and is one of the few places in this landlocked state where you can go scuba diving . Divers can check out endangered fish species and even see the large group of springs that feed this cenote.

Non-motorized boating is also permitted on the lake. The sandy beach is popular with sunbathers. Other activities include fishing, hiking trails, birdwatching opportunities, and even a 3.3-mile mountain bike trail . If you want to pitch a tent, the park campgrounds are open between mid-May and Labor Day.

Roswell's (pop 50,000) main tourism draw is rather 'out of this world'. Roswell is the closest settlement to the site of a mysterious and controversial incident that occurred in 1947 when some sort of craft crashed out of the sky. Many believe that the craft had otherworldly origins but the government claims that it was a weather balloon. Regardless of which is fact and which is fiction, the possibility that an alien spaceship crashed here spells big business opportunity, and Roswell has cashed in on the theory basing a good part of its economy on hosting UFO buffs and other curious visitors. UFO Museums, UFO 'research facilities' and a plethora of other outer space and alien themed attractions are available for exploration in Roswell. Visitors looking for more terrestrial, Earthling recreation will find Roswell also offers good access to a variety of activities in the LLano Estacado Plains which surround town.

Due to its popularity with the UFO hunting tourist set, Roswell has a good selection of hotel and motel rooms to choose from. Dining options in Roswell are also good, with excellent New Mexican and Mexican fare, along with a good number of standard Americana and steak restaurants to choose from.

Roswell sits at the junction of two popular highways, and is easily accessed from the north/south on US Highway 285 from Albuquerque and Carlsbad, and from the east/west on US Highway 380. In addition, Roswell hosts a small municipal airport with several flights on a local carrier offered on a daily basis to surrounding cities. New Mexico is one of the parts of the US that are on my bucket list and I found very inspiring posts on your blog with wonderful pictures of the scenery. Roswell, however, might be one place that I would skip. I’m simply not at all into extraterrestrial stuff – I find there are so many exciting things and places on planet Earth. For now, that’s good enough for me. But it doesn’t matter since it’s wonderful that each of us earthlings has our own interests and passions, right?

What a great introduction to Roswell. I was very fascinated by the alleged UFO sighting when I was younger and I read quite a lot about Roswell. I would love to visit all the museum and take in the trashy, touristy side too! I looks like a fun outing!

The Search For Aliens Continues In Roswell, New Mexico!

Driving along Highway 285 from the south towards Roswell through the New Mexico desert, travelers may be a little surprised to come across life-size cut-outs of an alien ship, little green men, and some locals trying to befriend them with pie. Coming into the city from any direction, there is ample warning of the wacky, weird, and wonderful still to come.

And there’s plenty still to come.

Roswell, in Chaves County, New Mexico, has fully embraced the “Roswell Incident” UFO brand with out-of-this-world museums, kitschy gift stores, and a number of roadside attractions. Whether coming in from the north, south, west, or east, visitors are greeted by signs decorated with spacecraft, and the universally recognized androgynous alien with the oversized head, large almond-shaped eyes, Voldemort nose, and long lanky arms.

Roswell was founded in 1871 by businessperson Van C. Smith who named the town after his father, Roswell Smith. After a slow start, the town’s growth and development took off when an aquifer was discovered in 1890 and continued with the arrival of the railroad in 1892.

Today Roswell is home to 50,000 residents and a booming tourist industry built around an unidentified flying object crashing in a nearby ranch in 1947. It soon became the focus of the “flying saucer” craze of the 40s and 50s, and since the 1970s, the city has cashed in on the controversy surrounding the alleged crash and subsequent military “cover-up.”

Things To Do

It has been explored in books, TV shows, and films, culminating in the now-debunked footage “Alien Autopsy: Fact or Fiction,” released in 1995.

All the information about this intriguing story can be gleaned at the International Museum and Research Center on South Main Street – the first stop on our itinerary in the ultimate travel guide to Roswell, New Mexico.

For those who want to continue enjoying Roswell's natural beauty, hiking through the Oxbow Trail is another easy option for adventurers. This trail runs for 2.3 miles and should take roughly 40 minutes to complete.

Some of the standout features of this trail are that guests can view a mix of desert and water terrain. There are also pink bluffs in the distance, making this a great place for photography. However, this trail may become muddy during rainy seasons, so keep that in mind before heading out.

After rainstorms, this trail may become muddy and hard to maneuver. If the weather calls for a storm, skipping this hike and waiting until the conditions improve may be safer.

How To Spend A Day In Intriguing Roswell, New Mexico

  • Destinations
  • United States

On a warm summer day in 1947, a New Mexico rancher stumbled upon mysterious debris strewn across the desert near his home. Although the rubber strips and bright pieces of tinfoil he collected and turned in to the authorities have since been found to be the result of Project Mogul , a military project that used high-flying balloons to monitor the Soviet Union’s atomic bomb tests, many people still enjoy the idea that aliens landed in Roswell. It’s a popular conspiracy theory on par with determining who really killed President John F. Kennedy or proving the moon landing was faked.

And so, curious visitors continue to flock to Roswell, a dramatic television series is based on the premise that aliens live among the townspeople, and the small southeastern New Mexico town embraces its connection to aliens more than 70 years later.

But once you’ve binged on all things alien, there is much more to see and do in Roswell.

Things To Do In Roswell

You can’t go to Roswell and not do at least one thing related to extraterrestrials, whether you envision them as little green men with hollow black eyes or your high-school crush . That would be like visiting San Francisco and not seeing the Golden Gate Bridge or visiting New York and skipping the Statue of Liberty.

Stop By The International UFO Museum And Research Center

Located in the heart of downtown Roswell, the International UFO Museum and Research Center , established in 1991 as a nonprofit educational organization, is a great way to kick off a day in Roswell. It takes about an hour to explore the exhibits related to the 1947 Roswell incident and learn about other unexplained phenomena related to UFO research. And the gift shop is full of unique alien gifts to help you remember your visit.

Enjoy Other Alien Adventures

Along Main Street, there are many other alien-themed boutiques and experiences. My kids always get a kick out of Alien Zone , a unique gift shop with a variety of alien selfie stations. And each year in early July, the UFO Capital of the World hosts the UFO Festival .

For a different kind of otherworldly experience, check out the Goddard Planetarium at the Roswell Museum & Art Center. Covering topics from the origins of the universe to our efforts to explore Mars, out-of-this-world films are shown on the domed screen three times a week.

Explore The Historic Downtown

Many decades before aliens allegedly crashed in the desert, Roswell was home to John Chisum’s Jingle Bob Ranch, the largest cattle ranch in the United States . As you explore downtown Roswell, it’s easy to be captivated by the McDonald’s shaped like a spaceship, the murals of little green men, and the alien-shaped streetlights. But also watch for public art displays and other nods to the city’s ranchers.

And you can’t miss the Chaves County Courthouse on Main Street, a beautiful beaux arts building topped with a green tiled dome. Completed before New Mexico became a state, the courthouse is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Head To The Roswell Museum & Art Center

In addition to the Goddard Planetarium, the Roswell Museum & Art Center houses a collection of more than 11,000 works of art and historical artifacts. The museum focuses on the indigenous Pueblo tribes and artists of the region, but the collection also includes works by Dali, Picasso, O’Keeffe, and other world-renowned artists.

From a historical perspective, the museum focuses on the history of the American West, from the impact the Spanish conquest and European-American settlers had on the region to New Mexico’s tie with missiles and space. In fact, the planetarium is named for Robert H. Goddard, the founder of modern rocketry, who built the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket and broke the sound barrier with a rocket launched in the open desert near Roswell. Don’t miss the opportunity to see a recreation of his rocket engine workshop at the museum when you visit Roswell.

The museum now displays more than 500 works of art, from intriguing paintings to impressive sculptures, in its 12 galleries.

Bottomless Lakes State Park near Roswell, New Mexico.

Experience The Great Outdoors At Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge Or Bottomless Lakes State Park

With its mild climate and abundant sunshine, Roswell is a great place to enjoy the outdoors.

Located on the northeastern edge of town, the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge is home to bobcats, badgers, and deer. The refuge is also a great place to observe thousands of migratory birds. While the scenery is always gorgeous, the best time to catch the critters is within a few hours of sunrise or sunset.

Just a few miles southeast of Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge is Bottomless Lakes State Park . This is another great place to go birding, but you can also kayak, canoe, fish, or even scuba dive at Bottomless Lakes. The state park got its name from the sinkholes that make the lakes appear to be bottomless. Some are as deep as 90 feet! In addition to the water, Bottomless Lakes State Park offers nearly 5 miles of hiking trails, campsites, and picnic areas.

Sample New Mexico Wines At Pecos Flavors Winery & Bistro

Did you know that the first wine grapes in the U.S. were planted in New Mexico? Before Prohibition, the Land of Enchantment was one of the largest wine-producing regions in the nation. How about that, California? Enjoy New Mexico wines, Land of Enchantment beers, and a bite to eat at Pecos Flavors Winery & Bistro just a few blocks west of Main Street.

Green chile spots.

From Alamogordo to Williamsburg, the 47th state is known for its chiles. While Roswell is more than 200 miles from Hatch , the Chile Capital of the World, there’s no shortage of delicious ways to enjoy green chiles in Roswell.

At the Pecos Flavors Winery & Bistro, try the green chile cheeseburger or turkey with green chile jelly sandwich. To enjoy the flavorful chiles in more traditional New Mexican fare, check out El Toro Bravo , Popo’s , or Amigos .

Cattle Baron

Embrace Roswell’s cattle-ranching history with a burger or steak at the Cattle Baron . And, if you want green chiles and beef, this regional steakhouse chain has you covered with its green chile wonton appetizer and green chile stew. Plus, you can always get a side of green chiles!

The Cowboy Cafe

From its Wild West decor to its mothership burger, The Cowboy Cafe brings Roswell’s rich history together in one delicious menu. Whether you enjoy biscuits and gravy, huevos rancheros, the chile relleno burger, or the chuckwagon plate, the portions are very generous. But you’ll want to be sure to save room for a slice of pie. I highly recommend the pecan!

Big D’s Downtown Dive

Whether they’re topped with green chiles or not, some of the best burgers in town are at Big D’s Downtown Dive . For a green chile burger with a twist, try the Holy Guacamole with housemade guacamole. For something other than burgers, try the Cuban sandwich or the crispy Monte Cristo. Be warned: Big D’s motto is “Great burgers, sh * y parking,” and they’re telling the truth! Try to visit outside of peak mealtimes for shorter waits and better parking opportunities.

Best Places To Stay In Roswell

Although my stops in Roswell have been short ones on New Mexico road trips, there are many places to stay in Roswell if you plan to spend the night. The city has a variety of hotels and motels, from national chains to local gems. You can also find vacation rentals through services like Vrbo and Airbnb, enjoy a bed and breakfast like the Clary Sage , or book a campsite.

What To Know Before You Go

Many travelers are surprised to learn that New Mexico is the nation’s fourth-highest state . While the elevation in Roswell is 3,500 feet, it only takes a change in altitude of 1,000 feet to trigger altitude sickness. Be sure to drink plenty of water and take other measures to avoid altitude sickness .

Throughout New Mexico, be prepared for the state question, “Red or green?” to determine if you’d like red chiles or green chiles added to your meal. If you want to try both, simply reply, “Christmas.”

Bottomless lakes state park.

Bottomless Lakes State Park is aptly named for the nine small, deep lakes that are located within the park atop the eastern escarpment of the Pecos River Valley, 14 miles southeast of Roswell along the Pecos River.

roswell nm tourist

The Bottomless Lakes are a collection of nine small but extremely deep lakes. The lakes are old caves that have collapsed, carved out of limestone by the river and aquifer. Cenotes are the technical name for underground leaks that feed them.

Around Lazy Lagoon, the cliffs have eroded. Each year, a large number of visitors come to the cenotes to participate in a range of outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, swimming (only in one of the lakes), fishing, and wildlife viewing.

Seven of the lakes are encircled by towering cliffs, but Lea Lake has a broad, sandy coastline on the western side, formed by the river that is constantly eroding the mountain’s limestone cliffs.

Fishing, non-motorized boating, SCUBA diving, a 3.3-mile mountain biking trail, and significant bird-watching opportunities are among the other activities available in the park. A good campground with a combination of 42 serviced and non-serviced sites are also available at the park.

International UFO Museum and Research Center

The International UFO Museum and Research Center, which opened in 1991 as a nonprofit educational organization in the heart of downtown Roswell, is a great place to start a day in Roswell. Take one of the many Roswell UFO tours given by various companies in the area if you want a unique sightseeing experience. These tours often visit notorious places like Building 84 at the Roswell Army Air Field, where many think the remnants of the crashing UFO and its passengers once lie.

The museum is one of Roswell, New Mexico’s most popular tourist attractions. It has a wide range of exhibits, displays, and information regarding the history of UFO encounters, as well as a large library on the subject. The museum also offers a gift shop with unique UFO-themed items and a large collection of UFO-related books.

It really is!

I was in Roswell, NM and I enjoyed it a lot. It's a perfect destination, especially as a family trip. Mc Donalds is so funny, and the UFO Museum is fabulous! But I had no time to visit Robert H. Goddard Planetarium. I add it to my list for my next trip. It's an exciting and detailed guide to Roswell.

You are so right, kids absolutely love it! Thanks for reading and commenting!

Roswell is SUCH a fun New Mexico town! It's a bit out off the normal route we drive between Kansas City and my Mom and Dad's house in Las Cruces, but when we adjust to visit, we always have a blast!

It really is!!!

Wow, this is a great article. I have driven by Roswell, NM on the highway twic about 20 years ago, but never bothered to stop. I really like the murals and, like you, I think I will take some photos with the 'aliens'.

Thank you, Rudy. Next time you're driving by, stop and explore!

I had no idea there were so many fun things to keep you occupied in Roswell! Yes, the UFO angle is enjoyable and provides much food for thought, but the natural beauty of the surrounding area is something I wasn't aware of, including the State Park, Wildlife Refuge and Sand Dunes. Previously I might have thought of spending a weekend there at the most, but given everything you have shared, a week now seems probable.

Saturday 25th of December 2021

I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed the post! Roswell is such a fun, quirky town, and there is really so much to see and enjoy that isn't just the "alien" scene.
