Séamus, the middle brother, wants to become wealthy; Tom, the oldest brother, wants to operate the family’s mining claim, and Pádraig, the youngest brother, wants to work at the only hospital in Dominion’s Creek.

In the series, an undercover police team in West Cork, Ireland, discovers 61 bales of cocaine after a drug-trafficking boat sinks off the coast. When word spreads that one bale is missing, the teens set out to find it and make a tidy profit.

Critica often described the series as like the dirtier version of the beloved treasure-hunting Goonies, where they get cocaine as rewrewardnstead of a chest full of gold.

The film’s link with Ireland lies mainly in its protagonist, Frank Sheeran, an American of Irish descent. His nickname “The Irishman” refers to his Irish roots, underscoring the importance of his heritage to his identity and the film’s narrative. Ireland itself is not a direct setting in the film, but Sheeran’s Irish heritage serves as a cultural backdrop that influences his interactions and his perception by others.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, this epic film brings together film legends such as Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. 5. Rebellion

Rebellion is undoubtedly the perfect series for understanding Dublin’s 1916 Easter Rising. This dramatic series takes you to the heart of Ireland, to the time of the struggle for Irish independence, when radical Irish nationalists decide to stage a rebellion in the middle of Dublin to throw the English out!

Considered one of the most crucial events in modern Irish history , the Easter Rising remains an epic episode, which the Rebellion series attempts to retrace.

Thus, this armed revolt against British rule is the starting point for the series, which explores with finesse the intertwined lives of fictional and historical characters, witnesses and actors in this moment of rebellion.

Through the destinies of these men and women, the series depicts the complexity of national feelings, divided loyalties and personal sacrifices. “Rebellion” doesn’t just recount military events; it offers an intimate view of the social and family impacts of the conflict, in an Irish society on the eve of profound transformation.

Netflix documentary “Au plus profond

In a completely different vein, “Au plus profond” (In the Deepest Depths) is a very successful feature on Netflix. It immerses you in the world of freediving, through the journey of two exceptional divers, Italy’s Alessia Zecchini and Ireland’s Stephen Keenan .

Directed by Laura McGann, this documentary skilfully combines breathtaking footage, poignant interviews and re-enactments to explore the extreme limits of Man underwater.

The program tells the true story of two freedivers, ready to do anything for their art and for their love affair.

You’ll discover the admirable story of Stephen Keenan , an Irishman who became a recognized expert in freediving safety. His relationship with Alessia Zecchini, at the heart of the documentary , offers an intimate perspective on their shared passion for pushing the boundaries of the human underwater.

However, the documentary is tinged with melancholy, suggesting impending tragedy. Without explicitly revealing the fate of his protagonists, McGann chooses to keep viewers in the present moment, following the divers on their spiritual and physical quest, while letting the shadow of death hang over them until the documentary’s conclusion.

7. The Wonder

The Wonder is on Netflix!

In a completely different genre, “The Wonder” is a story that transports you to rural Ireland in 1862. The film explores themes of faith, mysticism and skepticism through the prism of a captivating mystery.

Set a few years after the Great Famine, this work follows the story of an English nurse, Lib Wright, who is called to a small village to observe a case that defies explanation: a young girl, Anna O’Donnell, who is said to have survived without food for months.

What begins as a scientific mission quickly turns into a profound emotional and psychological journey, where personal beliefs are put to the test against local traditions and superstitions.

“The Wonder” deftly weaves suspense and reflection, asking questions about the nature of faith, the power of conviction and the price of truth in a community marked by its beliefs and secrets.

The story is beautifully rendered, capturing the austere atmosphere of post-famine Ireland and the complexity of characters navigating between the rational and the supernatural.

8. Sophie L’affaire Toscan du Plantier

This inspiring tale highlights the courage and resilience of these Irish soldiers under the command of Commander Pat Quinlan, brilliantly played by Jamie Dornan.

Despite being outnumbered and lacking support, the men from Jadotville put up a heroic defense, demonstrating remarkable discipline and bravery without losing a single man.

The film explores not only the military aspects of this siege, but also the political intrigue and manipulation that went on behind the scenes, highlighting the complexities and moral dilemmas of the Cold War in Africa. “Jadotville” pays poignant tribute to these forgotten heroes, finally recognized for their heroism in the face of extraordinary circumstances.

I’ve watched my fair share of good series on Netflix Ireland these last few months and more  than my fair share of crap ones!

In this guide, I’ll give you a quick insight into my favourites along with their Rotten Tomatoes score.

Below, you’ll find everything from dark dramas and comedies to a handful of Irish shows on Netflix, like Derry Girls.

There’s series that have been recently added (generally the ones at the top) along with some older shows that are well worth a watch.

1. The Fall of the House of Usher (90% on Rotten Tomatoes)

“The Fall of the House of Usher” is one of the strangest shows on Netflix Ireland that I’ve watched in recent years, but it was very addictive.

This is a gothic horror drama that tells the story of the wealthy Usher family who own Fortunato Pharmaceuticals.

Loosely inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe, the show sees a brother and sister at the helm of a business empire. However, things start to fall apart when their heirs start to get ‘taken out’ in horrendous circumstances.

2. Still Game (95% on Rotten Tomatoes)

“Still Game” is a heartwarming (and very funny!) Scottish sitcom that delves into the everyday lives of pals Jack Jarvis and Victor McDade, two aul lads living in Craiglang, a fictional suburb in Glasgow.

Two widowers, the show follows Jack and Victor and a host of their elderly friends as they battle everyday challenges, get into heated exchanges in the pub and cause plenty of mischief.

Although it isn’t quite “Only Fools and Horses” standard, if you’re looking for something that’s easy-to-watch and humorous, this is one of the best shows on Netflix Ireland.

• Starring: Ford Kiernan, Greg Hemphill and Paul Riley
• Plot in a nutshell: A humorous and poignant look at the lives of two elderly friends in Glasgow as they get up to all kinds of trouble

3. Fisk (98% on Rotten Tomatoes)

“Fisk” is an Australian comedy that centres around the character Helen Tudor-Fisk – a high-end contracts lawyer who’s on the back of a personal and professional downfall.

She finds herself working at a modest, suburban law firm that specialises in wills and probate.

Initially, Helen thinks that working with deceased clients would spare her from ‘people issues’, however, she couldn’t be more wrong.

• Starring: Kitty Flanagan
• Plot in a nutshell: A high-end contracts lawyer moves to a suburban law firm handling wills and finding humour in unexpected challenges

4. Arcane (100% on Rotten Tomatoes)

There are  plenty  of animated series on Netflix Ireland, but few pack a punch or have rave reviews like “Arcane”, which is set in the universe from “League of Legends”.

The story takes place in the twin cities of Piltover, a utopian realm, and Zaun, its oppressed underground counterpart and it follows sisters Vi and Jinx.

The duo are on either side of a conflict that’s set to boil over. Hit play about to see more.

• Release date: November 2021
• Starring: Hailee Steinfeld, Kevin Alejandro and Jason Spisak
• Plot in a nutshell: In a fictional universe, two sisters find themselves on opposite sides of a conflict in a world where magic and technology clash

5. Marcella (70% on Rotten Tomatoes)

The show follows Marcella Backland, a former detective with the London Metropolitan Police Service as she rejoins the force, arguably long before she is fit to do so.

Marcella not only battles complex criminal cases but also grapples with marriage woes, tragic loss, and memory blackouts.

If you’re looking for a good series on Netflix Ireland that’s easy to watch, albeit dark, this is worth considering.

• Starring: Anna Friel, Ray Panthaki and Nicholas Pinnock
• Plot in a nutshell: A former London detective rejoins the force amidst personal turmoil, tackling cases that resonate with her own life’s mysteries

6. Bodyguard (93% on Rotten Tomatoes)

“Bodyguard” is a British political thriller that follows the day-to-day of Police Sergeant David Budd – a troubled veteran suffering from PTSD.

Budd works for the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch of London’s Metropolitan Police Service. The plot thickens as he is assigned to protect the Home Secretary Julia Montague.

7. Informer (80% on Rotten Tomatoes)

If you’re looking for something you can binge in a day or two, “Informer” is arguably one of the best series on Netflix Ireland. This is a crime drama that follows Raza.

Raza gets coerced into becoming an informer for the a specialist unit in the Police, a role that sees him attempt to balance his civilian life with the demands of being a police informer.

This intense drama navigates through the grey areas of morality within the realms of national security and personal liberty​​​​.

• Starring: Paddy Considine, Bel Powley, Nabhaan Rizwan and Jessica Raine

8. Derry Girls (99% on Rotten Tomatoes)

Derry Girls is one of the best-reviewed Irish series on Netflix. The Rotten Tomatoes review score at the time of writing is 99%.

Created and written by Lisa McGee, the series draws inspiration from McGee’s own teenage years in Derry, Northern Ireland, during the 1990s and the final years of “The Troubles.”

The show follows the turbulent lives of five teenagers – Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle, and James as they get caught up in mischief.

9. A Nearly Normal Family (80% on Rotten Tomatoes)

I tend to avoid shows on Netflix Ireland that are dubbed or subbed, but I found this one intriguing enough to make me overlook the subtitles.

This is a Swedish drama that follows the story of a seemingly ordinary family whose life is upended following the passing of 32-year-old entrepreneur Christoffer “Chris” Olsen.

The show follows the family as they navigate the aftermath of the incident, revealing the extraordinary lengths they are willing to go to protect one another.

• Starring: Björn Bengtsson, Alexandra Karlsson Tyrefors and Lo Kauppi
• Plot in a nutshell: The life of a normal family is thrown into chaos following an incident, revealing their hidden depths and desperate measures to protect each other

10. Money Heist (94% on Rotten Tomatoes)

“Money Heist” is a Spanish heist crime drama that follows two meticulously planned heists led by the enigmatic “Professor.”

The heists, one on the Royal Mint of Spain and the other on the Bank of Spain, are told from the perspective of Tokyo, one of the robbers.

Amidst the tensions of an impending world conflict, Kate must also balance the challenges of her career with personal struggles, including her marriage to Hal, played by Rufus Sewell.

12. Ozark (82% on Rotten Tomatoes)

Ozark is widely regarded as one of the best series on Netflix Ireland for good reason – this is a peach of a show and I’m onto my second run of it at the minute.

The story follows the Byrde family, led by Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) after a money laundering scheme for a cartel goes ar**ways and they’re forced to relocate to the Ozarks.

There, they face various challenges from local criminals and the Police. Things escalate as Marty begins to expand the business.

• Genre: Crime Drama/Thriller
• Release date: July 2017
• Starring: Jason Bateman and Laura Linney
• Plot in a nutshell: A married couple involved in money laundering for a cartel move their family to the Lake of the Ozarks

13. You (91% on Rotten Tomatoes)

“You” has been doing the rounds for a while now and it’s based on the books by Caroline Kepnes. The story follows Joe Goldberg.

Joe has a tendency to develop obsessive infatuations with women that, without fail, result in catastrophic events. The first season, set in NYC, catches you hook line and sinker as Joe obsessives over a customer.

If you’re a fan of thrillers and a bit of dark humour, this is one of the more addictive series on Netflix Ireland.

• Starring: Penn Badgley, Elizabeth Lail, Luca Padovan, Zach Cherry and Shay Mitchell
• Plot in a nutshell: A bookstore manager becomes obsessively infatuated with women, leading him down a dark path of manipulation and danger

14. The Snow Girl (100% on Rotten Tomatoes)

The Snow Girl is one of those series on Netflix Ireland that was recommended to me several times in the last few days.

This is a Spanish mystery thriller that revolves around the gripping tale of a young journalist, Miren, who is determined to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of a child.

Miren’s investigation runs parallel to that of veteran journalist Eduardo and inspector Belén Millán, each unraveling different aspects of the case.

• Starring: Milena Smit
• Plot in a nutshell: A journalist embarks on a determined quest to find a missing girl, unraveling a web of mystery in a small community

15. The Spy (86% on Rotten Tomatoes)

The Spy is a mini series on Netflix Ireland starring Sacha Baron Cohen from Ali G fame. Eli Cohen is a spy who infiltrates the Syrian government in the 1960s.

It chronicles his double life as a Mossad agent and his efforts to gather crucial intelligence while navigating dangerous situations.

The show explores the moral and emotional dilemmas faced by Eli as he becomes deeply entrenched in a world of espionage, deception, and personal sacrifice.

16. The Alienist (77% on Rotten Tomatoes)

“The Alienist” is a psychological thriller set in late 19th-century New York City. It follows Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl), a criminal psychologist.

He teams up with newspaper illustrator John Moore (Luke Evans) and Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), the first female employee at the NYPD, to investigate gruesome incidents.

I really thought I’d hate this one but it was one of the best series on Netflix Ireland that I’ve watched as of late.

• Plot in a nutshell: Follow Dr. Laszlo Kreizler as he and his team investigate gruesome incidents with the help of cutting-edge forensic and psychological methods

17. Pine Gap (67% on Rotten Tomatoes)

“Pine Gap” is a political thriller that delves into the complex world of espionage, intelligence, and international relations.

Set in the secretive Pine Gap facility, a joint Australian-American space surveillance base, the show follows a team of analysts and intelligence officers.

They grapple with high-stakes situations, including global crises, cyber threats, and the tension between their professional duties and personal lives.

• Plot in a nutshell: The Pine Gap facility is where Australian and American intelligence professionals work together. The series explores the challenges they face

18. Collateral (79% on Rotten Tomatoes)

“Collateral” is a British crime drama that revolves around a single investigation and its far-reaching implications.

The show follows Detective Inspector Kip Glaspie (Carey Mulligan) as she investigates the seemingly unrelated incident involving a pizza delivery man.

This is another good series on Netflix Ireland that’s easy to get into and it delivers its fair share of twists and turns.

19. The Law According to Lidia Poët (100% on Rotten Tomatoes)

“The Law According to Lidia Poët” is an Italian series inspired by the life of Lidia Poët, Italy’s first modern female lawyer.

Set in Turin in 1883, it follows Lidia Poët (Matilda De Angelis) after she is disbarred by an appellate court.

Undeterred, Lidia takes on a job at her brother’s law firm and strives to overturn the court’s ruling.

• Starring: Matilda De Angelis, Eduardo Scarpetta, Pier Luigi Pasino and Sinéad Thornhill
• Plot in a nutshell: The story portrays the challenges faced by Lidia Poët, Italy’s first female lawyer, who is disbarred by an appellate court

20. Baptiste (86% on Rotten Tomatoes)

“Baptiste” is a British crime series that follows Julien Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo), a retired French detective who is drawn back into the world of crime-solving.

While vacationing in Amsterdam, Baptiste becomes embroiled in a case involving the disappearance woman.

His pursuit of the truth takes him into the dark and dangerous underworld of the city.

21. Wednesday (72% on Rotten Tomatoes)

This is the last type of series on Netflix Ireland that I ever thought I’d find myself watching, having disliked the original show from back in the day.

“Wednesday” is an American coming-of-age supernatural comedy horror based on Charles Addams’ character, Wednesday Addams.

The story follows Wednesday as she attends Nevermore Academy, a private school for monstrous outcasts, after being expelled from her previous school.

• Genre:  Comedy Horror
• Release date: November 2022
• Starring: Jenna Ortega, Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome and Jamie McShane
• Plot in a nutshell: Expelled from school, Wednesday Addams is enrolled in Nevermore Academy, a school for monstrous outcasts

22. Top Boy (95% on Rotten Tomatoes)

It’s been around a while now, but this is arguably one of the best series on Netflix Ireland that I’ve watched this autumn/winter.

“Top Boy” offers an authentic portrayal of life in East London’s drug-infested neighborhoods. The show explores the gritty world of drug dealers, their criminal activities, and the challenges faced by the residents.

'Adrian Dunbar's Coastal Ireland': everything you need to know about the Channel 5 series

The Line of Duty favourite goes on an epic tour in Adrian Dunbar's Coastal Ireland.

Adrian Dunbar's Coastal Ireland gives viewers a look at its stunning coastline, presented by the much-loved Line of Duty actor. 

As he travels around, he gets the opportunity to achieve a lifelong ambition to visit the Skellig Islands, as well as meeting up with old friends along the way. The first episode saw him crossing treacherous seas to reach the islands, and also showcases the spectacular Mizen bridge, which is suspended 45 metres above sea level.

Julie Wakley, Tourism Ireland’s Head of Great Britain, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to support the production of this new TV series, Adrian Dunbar's Coastal Ireland .

"With around two million people across Britain set to watch the programme, it’s a great way to shine a spotlight on Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland, reminding viewers of our spectacular coastline."

Adrian Dunbar's Coastal Ireland continues on Thursday February 11 at 8pm on Channel 5. If you missed the first episode, you can catch up on My5 . It's available until August, so you've got plenty of time!

What should we expect from the second episode?

In the second episode of Adrian Dunbar's Coastal Ireland , the actor travels along Causeway Coastal Route, a scenic 130 mile route. He will also visit the shores of Strangford Lough in County Down, reconnecting with the landscape and people who live there. Other locations include Glenarm Castle, Mount Stewart House and Gardens and the Mourne Mountains.

As well as this, Adrian will also get the opportunity to eat a delicious meal cooked by chef Simon McCance, who makes a traditional dish using Glenarm’s Shorthorn beef.

Adrian Dunbar will soon be seen back in uniform as Ted Hastings in Line of Duty Season 6 . The hit drama is expected to return to BBC1 in the Spring.
