East Coast Road Trip
If youâre looking to hit the road, try an East Coast road trip! The East Coast is a fabulous destination with an endless list of places to explore. From historic cities to quaint little beachside towns, we promise you wonât have time to get bored.
East, Westâwhatâs best?
While the West Coast is known for its sheer beauty and natural sights, the East Coast will seduce you thanks to its rich history and culture, with dynamic places that have something to offer for everyone. Sure, you can travel from coast to coast, but, keep in mind the size of the country. Bus rides through the middle of the US can stretch 15 to 20 hours or even longer. If you have limited time (or patience!), itâs a safer bet to choose one region and explore it more thoroughly. The following road trip itinerary focuses on the East Coast of the United States.
Consider Going on Your East Coast Road Trip by Bus
Why? The reasons are numerous! Traveling by bus lets you leave the âhow are we getting thereâ part of the planning to the experts, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. Companies like BoltBus and FlixBus have established many routes across the country and are popular with students and budget travelers, while Greyhound , the biggest bus company in the country, has a combination of bus lines that makes it possible to go nearly anywhere. Plus:
- Taking the bus is cheaper than renting a car and paying for gas.
- It will give you the freedom of not having to find parking or pay outrageous parking prices.
- If you get stuck in traffic, you can read, listen to music, play games, and even catch up on work.
- Another bus travel perk: itâs more eco-friendly than taking the car.
East Coast Road Trip Itinerary
Now, the great thing about opting for an East Coast Road Trip is that it is possible to do a bus road trip for North to South or South to North in 12 days to over a month, depending on your itinerary. To help you kick off your road trip, weâve put together a list of main stops with optional stops or day trips along the way. We know that mapping out a road trip can be intimidating, especially when planning to travel long distances. There are many things to see, and you donât necessarily know where to stop or how much time to spend in each city you visit! Follow this itinerary to the letter or pick and choose what works best for you depending on your timeline, budget, and interests.
Now, letâs hit the road!
1. Visit Boston to kick off your East Coast Road Trip
If youâre heading South, a good starting point is Boston, Massachusetts. This historical city was founded in 1629 and is one of the oldest, biggest, and most interesting cities in the country. Not to mention that it has multiple bus connexions down the East Coast. Itâs the largest city in New England, an educational powerhouse, and a pivotal player in American History and also a beautiful and engaging city with tons for tourists to do, see, and experience.
Why visit Boston?
Boston has excellent public transportation, which extends to the neighboring cities of Cambridge and Brookline. So, if youâre traveling around Boston, you can visit the three cities as one large metropolis. Boston is also a fabulous place for sports fans and is home to many awesome bars and food markets.
How much time should you spend in Boston?Â
We suggest spending two or three days in Boston.
Things to do in Boston
Spend a day following the Freedom Trail through downtown Boston to hit up most of the historical sites all in one go, including Boston Common, Faneuil Hall, and Paul Revereâs home.
- Check out the Boston Freedom Trail – a man-made path with sixteen historical sites focused on the American revolution, spread out across the city.Â
- Boston Common , also known as âthe Commonâ, is the oldest city park in the US, founded in 1634. The park is filled with public artworks commemorating its 385 years of history. You can also play tennis or baseball or relax by its lovely frog pond.
- Faneuil Hall is Bostonâs waterfront marketplace comprised of three historic buildings.
- The Paul Revere House , built in 1680, was the colonial house of American patriot, Paul Revere. It now holds various exhibits about Revereâs life, Bostonâs history and a museum gift shop with various crafts, ornaments, and gifts.Â
Another great activity to do in Boston is to visit the Quincy Market. Set up in a fantastic building, the market boasts fresh food stalls, serving anything and everything from pan-Asian cuisine to vegan delights. You might also want to stop by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to browse the current exhibit, or if youâre more of a sports buff, head to Fenway Park to catch a baseball game. Check out our full Boston Travel guide for more inspiration on things to do while youâre in there.
Insider tip: Ask an MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) station manager for a free reusable Charlie Card for discounts on subway and bus fares.
Travel from Boston
Next: take the bus from boston to nyc.
Next stop on your East Coast Road Trip: New York City! There are over 90 departures per day between Boston and New York so youâll be able to catch a bus at almost every hour of the day. Most of the buses arrive and depart from the Boston South Station , located downtown at 700 Atlantic Ave. The bus ride from Boston to NY lasts between 4 and 6 hours, depending on the time of departure.Â
Bus tip: If youâre coming from the South, sit on the right side of the bus for a view of the entire New York skyline before the Holland Tunnel.
BOOK YOUR BOSTON TO NEW YORK BUS TICKETS
Optional route or day trip: Boston to BarnstableÂ
If you feel like taking the scenic route and extending your road trip itinerary, you can try an alternate route to Barnstable, on Cape Cod.
 So, why stop by Barnstable?
- Barnstable is the largest town on Cape Cod.
- Itâs the perfect quiet and quaint town for a beach getaway.
- Itâs located a short bus ride away from Boston (1:30).
BOOK YOUR BUS FROM BOSTON TO BARNSTABLE
If you choose to head down to the Big Apple next, note that the ride between Barnstable and New York is a little over six hours. Be careful, there are only two daily departures at 8:30Â am and 12:45Â pm between Barnstable and New York .
2. Next stop: check out the NYC attractions
New York City needs no introduction. Itâs the economic center of the world, the setting for countless movies and TV shows and one of the most iconic places on Earth. We could not pass on this stop for this East Coast road trip.Â
Why Visit New York City?
Ah, New York, New York! In the Big Apple, you will find some of the worldâs best museums, shopping, dining, and pretty much everything else you could imagine. Step away from Times Square, and you will see that New York is more than a clichĂŠ, itâs actually a real living and breathing city. Yes, New York is a city of split personalities from trendy Brooklyn to elegant SoHo, ethnically diverse Queens and the funky lower East Side. There is a spot for everyone⌠and every taste!
How much time should you spend in New YorkÂ
We suggest spending three days minimum in New York. Itâs not much, considering how much there is to see and do in the city, but it will give you a good feel, and hey, you can always come back for more.
Things to do in NYC
There are more fun things to do in New York than can possibly be named, but one of the best ways to discover the Big Apple is to explore the different neighborhoods on foot. You can get a New York Pass , which gives you free entry to 100+ attractions, including the Empire State Building. The price depends on the duration of your pass, but it is definitely worth it if you plan on visiting some of the touristy attractions.
Insider Tip: Read up on how to visit New York on a budget if youâre a little short on cash!
Travel from New York City
Most buses arrive and depart from the New York Port Authority Terminal . To avoid any unnecessary stress, arrive well in advance as the terminal is gigantic and gets extremely busy. This will give you plenty of time to locate your bus!
Next: Bus from New York to Philadelphia
Next stop on your East Coast road trip: Philadelphia! There are departures every 15 minutes from New York to Philadelphia , most of them leaving from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The bus ride is a quick one, taking between 1h50 minutes and 3 hours. Since there are so many departures, we suggest scheduling your bus trip according to its duration, in order to maximize your time both in New York and Philly!
Bus tip: Port Authority Bus Terminal has six floors: Lower level, Subway level, Main level, Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4. Bus gates are located on the Lower level, Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 only.Â
BOOK YOUR NYC TO PHILLY BUS TICKETS
Optional route or day trip: Bus from NYC to Bear Mountain State ParkÂ
One of the best day trips from NYC is to hop on the Coach USA bus to Bear Mountain State Park. A refreshing destination to escape the city, Bear Mountain is the place to go fishing, hiking or biking in beautiful surroundings.
Bus tip: Buses leave Port Authority Bus Terminal at 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue at 8:45 am and 11:15Â am, arriving back into the city at 5Â pm. On weekends, you can stay longer in the State Park if you catch the additional bus returning at 7 pm.
3. Next on the list: discover the many fun things to do in Philly
Whether youâve decided to take a day trip out of the city or not, Philly should be your next stop down the coast. Philadelphia is a great place to stop since arriving by bus from New York takes only two hours.
Why Visit Philadelphia?
Back when Washington DC was just swampland, Philadelphia was the capital of the early United States. Now, itâs a diverse and interesting city, where skyscrapers blend with colonial-era buildings. Most of the historic sites are clustered inside Independence National Historic Park, including the Liberty Bell and Constitution Hall (birthplace of the Declaration of Independence). The city is notable for its rich history and art scene so youâll have plenty to do.
How much time should you spend in Philadelphia?Â
To fully enjoy Philadelphia, plan two to three days to visit the city.
Things to do in Philadelphia
A great way to visit the city is to stroll down the trail in Philadelphiaâs Historic District. This walking trail features some 23 stops to discover the cityâs rich history and spans from the Delaware River to 7th Street and from Vine St to Lombard St. All the stops are located in the downtown area, home to many great places to unwind, eat and drink – as well as quaint boutiques and art galleries. Seize the opportunity and take a break from the trail by making a stop at the Independence Beer Garden. This immense venue is worth the detour to sip excellent beers as you take in the view.Â
Insider Tip: Youâll want to try a world-famous Philly Cheesesteak while in town. Head to South Philly to try one of two major Philadelphia institutions: Patâs King of Steaks or Genoâs Steaks.
Travel from Philadelphia
The Greyhound Bus Statio n is located a 10-minute walk from the start of the trail, which starts at the Independence Visitor Center.Â
Next: take the Bus from Philadelphia to Washington DC
Once youâre done taking in the sights of historic Philly, keep heading down the coast to the capital city, Washington DC. Here too, there are multiple daily departures between Philly and DC , with trips lasting between 3 and 5 hours, depending on the time of departure.Â
Bus tip: Most buses depart from downtown Philadelphia at the Greyhound Bus Station. However, the arrival stop may differ, depending on which bus you take. We suggest picking one that stops at Union Station in DC – since itâs located at 50 Massachusetts Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002 – a central location that is also well connected to all parts of the city.Â
BOOK YOUR PHILADELPHIA TO WASHINGTON BUS Â
Optional route or day trip: Philadelphia to WilmingtonÂ
If you want to extend your East Coast road trip, you can make a stop in Wilmington, Delaware before heading to Washington DC. Located only 50 minutes away from Philly, it can also be a day trip destination. Let Wilmingtonâs unique blend of old and new charm youâand be sure to visit the Nemours estate and gardens!
BOOK YOUR PHILADELPHIA TO WILMINGTON BUS TICKETS
You can leave from either Philadelphia or Wilmington to DC, as both cities have over 15 daily departures for the capital. Both trips take between three and four hours.Â
4. Next on the list: Washington DC attractions
This is it, the nationâs capital! If thereâs a stop you canât skip on this road trip, itâs this one.
Why Visit Washington DC?
Well known for its glistening marble monuments, the Presidentâs home address, and a whole bunch of free museums, DC also has a thriving foodie and nightlife scene.Â
How much time should you spend in Washington DC?Â
We suggest spending at least three to four days in Washington.
What to do in Washington DC?
Most of DCâs top tourist attractions are clustered together near the National Mall. Here, youâll find the monuments, the Smithsonian Museums (all free to the public), and the Capitol Building. Take a stroll in the trendy Dupont Circle neighborhood: lively nightlife, eclectic eateries, coffee shops, bookstores, and dive bars. To really see what DC is all about, you can also explore some of the colorful neighborhoods away from the monuments. Photograph the million-dollar townhouses in Georgetown, eat amazing international food in Adams Morgan, or dance all night along the U Street Corridor. Another fun thing to do in Washington is to swing by the Mall District. This 2-mile-long park runs through the center of the city and is home to Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, the Smithsonian Museum, and the White House. Oh, and one of the best things about DC is that most museums are free. Be sure to check out the National Air & Space Museum and the National Museum of Natural History!
Insider Tip: Everyone snaps pictures of the monuments during the day, but revisit at night to take dramatic shots with fewer tourists in the way.
Travel from Washington DC
Most buses depart from the Washington Union Station , one of the busiest spots for transit and travel in the country, with trains, local, regional and national buses. If youâre feeling a little lost, look for the bus gates, which are located on the Mezzanine Level of the station.Â

BOOK YOUR WASHINGTON TO VIRGINIA BEACH BUS TICKETS
5. Last stop: take a trip to Charleston
Every road trip eventually has to come to an end⌠And to end yours on a high note, your last stop can be Charleston, South Carolina. Whether you arrive from Washington, Richmond or Virginia Beach, Charleston is truly a great destination to wrap up your East Coast road trip. In addition to its rich history, the city is also a major culinary destination, with many fantastic southern-style restaurants.Â
Why Visit Charleston?
Charleston is the embodiment of old southern charm; a historic seaport town first established in 1670. It is renowned for its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and French Quarters but, unlike many southern cities, Charleston managed to escape the Civil War mostly unharmed, and is bursting with historic buildings, old cemeteries, and cobblestones. It is the best city to discover Southern hospitality and charm!
How much time should you spend in Charleston?Â
We suggest spending two to three days in Charleston.
Things to do in Charleston SC
Charleston has many major historical sites like Fort Sumter (the location where the Civil War began) and the old French Quarter. Consider taking a walking tou r to admire the Southern architecture. And, at night, take a stroll on the Battery promenade and in Waterfront Park both overlooking Charleston Harbor for amazing views.
Insider Tip: Try to find accommodation close to the city center. This will allow you to explore the shops, restaurants, and historical sites on foot. Also be sure to splurge on a meal at Magnoliaâs or Jestineâs Kitchen!
Potential day trip from Charleston
If your East Coast road trip has been filled mostly with visiting cities so far, it might be time to end on a relaxing note! Head out to one of the numerous beaches outside of the city, such as Folly Beach or Sullivanâs Island and discover the breathtaking sights of the East Coast.
If you want to keep going south, just a little while longerâŚ
If you havenât had enough, you can keep traveling south a little longer! Your next stop should be Savannah, Georgia , from which you can keep making your way south through Atlanta and then Florida, all the way to Key West, the southernmost point of continental US.
Bus Tip: In Charleston, the bus station is located outside of town. To get to the city center cheaply, cross the street from the bus terminal and take the #11 Airport bus towards the City Center.

- đ First Aid Basics: Band-aids, antiseptic cream, and more.
- đ Backup Supply: Extra doses for unexpected delays.
First aid kit
Including a comprehensive first aid kit in your travel essentials can ensure that youâre prepared for any unexpected medical emergencies during your journey. A well-stocked first aid kit should include essential items such as adhesive bandages, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and tweezers. Itâs also important to pack any prescription medications that you may need throughout the trip.
When managing medical emergencies on a bus trip, itâs crucial to stay calm and assess the situation before taking action. If someone is experiencing a serious medical emergency, itâs important to call for professional help immediately. In the meantime, having a well-equipped first aid kit can help alleviate symptoms or provide temporary relief until further assistance arrives.
When packing your first aid kit for a bus trip, consider the length of the journey and any potential risks associated with your destination. Itâs always better to be over-prepared than underprepared when it comes to ensuring your safety while traveling by bus.
First Aid Kit: Be Prepared!

Entertainment
Exploring different forms of entertainment can enhance the overall experience of traveling on a long journey. Whether itâs a book, music, or a movie, having something to keep you occupied can make the time pass more quickly and prevent boredom from setting in. When packing for a bus trip, itâs important to consider both must-have and optional entertainment items that will make the journey more enjoyable.
Here are some ideas for must-have and optional entertainment items for bus trips:
- Must-Haves:
- A good book or e-reader
- Headphones/earbuds
- Phone/tablet/laptop charger
- Travel games (such as playing cards or board games)
- Portable DVD player or tablet with movies/shows downloaded
- Puzzle books (such as crosswords or Sudoku)
- Coloring book and colored pencils/markers
- Travel journal/sketchbook
- Podcasts/audiobooks
By packing these essential items, youâll be prepared for any downtime during your bus trip. Remember to also pack light so that youâre not weighed down with too much luggage. With the right mix of entertainment options, youâll be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!
When embarking on a long bus journey, having access to a variety of snacks can make all the difference. Choosing healthy options is important to maintain energy levels and prevent hunger pangs, ensuring a more comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.
Some great healthy snack choices include:
- Granola bars
In addition to choosing healthy options, itâs also important to consider budget-friendly choices. Snacks bought at convenience stores or gas stations can be expensive and add up quickly.
Packing snacks beforehand not only saves money but also allows for more control over portion sizes and choices. Consider packing items such as:
- String cheese
- Crackers with hummus or peanut butter
- Applesauce cups
- Homemade snack mixes
This provides an easy and affordable option on your next bus trip.

Water bottle.
In addition to snacks, staying hydrated is crucial during bus trips. Bringing along a reusable water bottle can help you save money and reduce waste compared to constantly buying plastic bottles at stops. Additionally, using a water bottle with a filter can ensure that you have access to clean drinking water even in areas where the tap water may not be safe.
When choosing a water bottle for your bus trip, there are several factors to consider. First, look for one that is durable and leak-proof to prevent any spills or damage to your belongings. Second, consider the size â a larger bottle will provide more hydration but may be bulkier to carry around. Lastly, think about features such as insulation or built-in filters depending on your needs and preferences.
Benefits of using a reusable water bottle:
- Saves money by eliminating the need to buy single-use plastic bottles
- Reduces waste and helps protect the environment
- Provides access to clean drinking water with built-in filters
Remembering these tips when choosing a reusable water bottle will help ensure that you stay hydrated during your bus trip without sacrificing convenience or sustainability.
Travel pillow
When it comes to getting some rest during long bus trips, a good travel pillow can make all the difference. A quality travel pillow offers essential neck support and helps prevent stiffness or pain upon arrival at your destination.
Additionally, a compact design makes it easy to pack and carry with you, while versatile options allow for comfortable sleeping positions no matter how you prefer to rest.
Whether youâre traveling for business or leisure, investing in a reliable travel pillow is an excellent way to ensure that you arrive feeling rested and ready to take on whatever adventures lay ahead.
Neck support
Effective neck support is crucial for comfortable bus travel, as it can prevent stiffness, pain, and fatigue. When traveling long distances on a bus, passengers often find themselves sitting upright in uncomfortable positions for hours at a time.
Without proper neck support, the muscles in the neck and shoulders can become tense and painful, causing discomfort throughout the entire body.
To ensure that you have adequate neck support while traveling by bus, it is important to consider your specific needs when choosing a travel pillow or other supporting device. Some factors to consider include the firmness of the pillow or cushion, its size and shape (i.e., whether it is designed to wrap around your neck or provide support behind your head), and any additional features like built-in heat therapy or adjustable straps.
By taking these factors into account when selecting your neck support device, you can help ensure a more comfortable journey on your next bus trip.
Compact design
Moving on from the importance of neck support, another crucial aspect to consider when packing for a bus trip is the compact design of your items. As you travel on a bus, you will likely have limited space to store your belongings. Therefore, itâs essential to pack smartly and efficiently to ensure that you can bring everything you need without taking up too much space.
One of the best ways to save space in your luggage is by using space-saving tips and folding techniques. Rolling clothes instead of folding them flat not only saves room but also reduces wrinkles. Another great tip is to use packing cubes or compression bags that can compress bulky items like jackets or towels into smaller sizes.
Moreover, try choosing multi-purpose items such as a scarf that doubles as a blanket or an umbrella that has UV protection built-in so that you donât have to pack multiple separate items. By utilizing these techniques and selecting multi-purpose products, youâll be able to efficiently pack all of your essentials while still leaving some extra room for any souvenirs or unexpected purchases along the way.
Versatile for different sleeping positions
Adapting to various sleeping positions is a crucial factor to consider when selecting travel pillows, as it ensures that travelers can get the rest they need while on long bus journeys. The best pillows for comfortable bus sleeping should provide ample support and comfort for different sleeping positions.
Here are some tips for staying comfortable on long bus rides:
- Choose a pillow with adjustable firmness levels that can be customized according to your preference.
- Opt for a pillow with multiple functions, such as one that can be used as both a neck pillow and lumbar support.
- Look for pillows made from breathable materials like cotton or bamboo to ensure proper ventilation and prevent overheating.
- Consider investing in bedding accessories like eye masks, earplugs, and blankets to enhance your overall sleep experience.
By following these tips and choosing the right travel pillow, passengers can ensure they are well-rested during their bus journey, allowing them to arrive at their destination feeling refreshed and ready for their next adventure.
Incorporating earplugs into oneâs travel essentials can offer a peaceful and uninterrupted journey, making it an essential item for any traveler. The benefits of using earplugs while traveling are numerous. Firstly, they reduce external noise levels, which can be particularly helpful during bus trips where the sound of the engine or other passengers chatting can disturb your sleep. Secondly, they can help prevent ear infections by keeping out dust and bacteria from entering your ears. Lastly, wearing earplugs can also aid in regulating air pressure inside the eardrum during takeoff and landing.
Choosing the right type of earplug is crucial to ensure that you get maximum comfort and effectiveness when using them on long bus trips. When selecting earplugs for travel purposes, consider factors such as size, material type, noise reduction rating (NRR), and whether they are reusable or disposable. To make this process easier for you, here is a table outlining some of the best earplugs available on the market specifically designed for bus trips:
By incorporating these simple yet effective tools into your packing checklist for bus trips, you will be able to enjoy a more comfortable journey without being disturbed by external sounds and distractions.
In addition to earplugs, another essential item that bus travelers should consider bringing along is an eye mask. Eye masks are incredibly useful for blocking out light and ensuring a good nightâs sleep, especially during long bus trips.
The primary benefit of wearing an eye mask during a bus trip is that it helps block out any unwanted light and create a more comfortable sleeping environment. This is particularly important if youâre traveling overnight or in areas where there might be streetlights or other sources of artificial light. Additionally, studies have shown that exposure to blue light from electronic devices can interfere with our bodyâs natural sleep-wake cycle. By wearing an eye mask, you can minimize this exposure and improve the quality of your sleep on the bus.
When choosing an eye mask for your bus trip, there are several factors to consider. First, look for a mask that fits comfortably over your eyes without being too tight or slipping off during movement. Consider materials such as silk or satin which feel gentle against the skin and help regulate temperature. You may also want to choose a mask with adjustable straps so you can fine-tune its comfort level throughout the trip.
Ultimately, by taking these steps to ensure a good nightâs rest on board your bus journey will become much more enjoyable!
Chargers are an essential item to pack when going on a bus trip.
Your phone charger should be at the top of your list as it ensures that you can stay connected and navigate through your journey without worrying about running out of battery.
A portable charger is also a great addition as it allows you to charge your phone on-the-go, especially if there are no power outlets available on the bus.
Additionally, if you plan to travel internationally, donât forget to bring adapters for different countriesâ electrical outlets.
Phone charger
The inclusion of a phone charger in oneâs travel essentials ensures uninterrupted communication and access to digital resources during the journey. It is important to be informed about the different types and features of phone chargers available in the market before purchasing one.
There are several types of phone chargers such as wall chargers, car chargers, portable power banks, and wireless chargers. Each type has its own unique features that cater to specific needs.
When buying a phone charger for travel purposes, there are several tips that can come in handy. Firstly, look for a charger with multiple USB ports so that you can charge more than one device at a time. Secondly, choose a charger with fast charging capabilities as it saves time and ensures your devices are fully charged quickly. Thirdly, opt for a portable power bank if youâre going on long journeys or camping trips where access to electricity may be limited. Lastly, invest in high-quality chargers from reliable brands as they tend to last longer and offer better performance compared to cheaper alternatives.
By keeping these tips in mind when purchasing a phone charger for bus trips, you can ensure that you stay connected throughout your journey without any interruptions due to low battery life.
Portable charger
In the previous subtopic, we discussed the importance of bringing a phone charger on your bus trip. However, what happens when youâre on the go and donât have access to an outlet? This is where a portable charger comes in handy.
Not only does it eliminate the need for wall outlets, but it also allows for multiple charges without any interruptions. The benefits of using a portable charger are numerous. First and foremost, they are incredibly convenient for travel as they allow you to charge your devices while on-the-go.
Additionally, they come in various sizes and capacities making them suitable for different needs. When choosing the right portable charger, consider factors such as battery capacity, charging speed, portability, and compatibility with your devices. By selecting the right one that suits your requirements best, you can ensure that all your devices stay charged throughout your journey!
Adapters for international travel
For the global traveler, having the right adapters for international travel can be a symbol of preparedness and an essential tool for ensuring electronic devices remain charged while abroad.
Adapters come in various shapes and sizes, designed to adapt to different sockets around the world.
Understanding which type of plug is needed in your destination country is crucial as it varies from region to region.
In addition, some countries have different voltage requirements that may require a voltage converter to avoid damaging your device.
Travelers should research their destinationâs electrical standards before purchasing an adapter or voltage converter.
Some common plug types include Type A used in North America, Type C commonly found in Europe, and Type D used in India and South Africa.
Voltage converters are also important to consider since some countries use 110-120 volts while others use 220-240 volts.
Failure to use a converter could lead to irreparable damage or complete failure of electronic devices such as laptops or hair dryers.
By being aware of these differences and investing in the appropriate adapters and converters, travelers can ensure they stay connected while exploring new destinations without worrying about battery life or damaging their devices due to incompatible electrical systems.
Cash and ID
Prior to embarking on a bus journey, it is recommended to ensure one possesses sufficient cash and identification documents, as these items are fundamental for navigating through the various stages of the trip.
In terms of budgeting tips, it is advisable to carry enough cash for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. This could range from having enough money for food and drinks during long layovers or delays, to being able to pay for transportation in case electronic payment methods fail. It is also important to research beforehand if there are any additional fees or taxes that may be required when crossing borders or traveling between different states.
In addition to budgeting tips, safety precautions should also be considered when carrying cash and identification documents on a bus trip. Keeping large sums of cash in one place can make you an easy target for theft, so it is best practice to distribute your money amongst different pockets or bags. It is equally important to keep identification documents such as passports or IDs in a safe place where they can easily be retrieved when needed, but not visible enough for potential thieves.
Furthermore, always have backup copies of important documents stored electronically or with someone trustworthy in case anything happens along the way. By prioritizing these two key factors before embarking on a bus journey, you will significantly reduce any stressors that may arise throughout your travels and ensure a smoother overall experience.
Maps and travel guides
When it comes to maps and travel guides, travelers have the option to choose between paper or digital formats.
While some may prefer the traditional feel of a physical map or guidebook, others may enjoy the convenience and accessibility of digital options.
Regardless of format, these resources provide valuable information such as local recommendations and tourist attraction details to help enhance oneâs travel experience.
With so many options available, it is important for travelers to carefully consider their needs and preferences before selecting a map or travel guide.
Paper or digital options
The section highlights the available options for note-taking during travels and suggests ways to consider their advantages and disadvantages.
When it comes to packing checklists, there are two main options: paper or digital. One benefit of using a digital packing checklist is that it can be easily edited and updated. This means that if you forget to add an item or decide to remove something from your list, you can do so quickly without having to start over from scratch.
On the other hand, some people prefer the tangible nature of a paper checklist. It allows them to physically cross off items as they pack, which provides a sense of accomplishment and helps reduce anxiety about forgetting essential items. However, one downside is that if you lose your list or accidentally throw it away, you may have difficulty remembering everything you need to bring on your trip.
Ultimately, the choice between digital and paper options depends on personal preference and travel habits.
Local information and recommendations
This section presents valuable insights into obtaining local information and recommendations for travel destinations, which can enhance the overall travel experience.
One of the best ways to get a sense of your destination is by trying out the local cuisine. Food is an integral part of any culture, and trying new dishes can be a great way to immerse yourself in the local way of life. You can ask locals for their favorite eateries or look up recommendations online. Donât be afraid to try something new â you may discover a hidden gem thatâs not listed in any guidebook.
In addition to food, itâs important to research transportation options and safety tips when visiting a new place. Public transportation is often the most affordable and convenient option, but make sure you know how to use it safely before setting out on your own. Researching crime rates and dangerous areas beforehand can also help you avoid potential dangers while exploring your destination.
Local tourism boards or hotel staff may have additional recommendations for safe places to visit or activities to avoid at certain times of day or year. By taking these precautions, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip while discovering all that your destination has to offer.
Tourist attraction details
Now that you have a good grasp of the local information and recommendations for your upcoming bus trip, itâs time to dive into the tourist attraction details. Whether youâre a seasoned traveler or new to exploring, this section will provide an overview of the top-rated attractions and off-the-beaten-path spots that are worth visiting.
First on the list are the top-rated attractions that should not be missed. If youâre looking for iconic landmarks, then make sure to visit places like the Empire State Building in New York City or Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. For history buffs, thereâs no better place than Washington D.C., where you can visit national monuments like Lincoln Memorial or Smithsonian National Museum of American History. For those who love nature, national parks like Yellowstone or Grand Canyon offer breathtaking views and outdoor activities. These popular attractions may require some planning ahead as they tend to draw large crowds throughout the year.
But if youâre looking for something more unique and off-the-beaten-path spots, then consider exploring hidden gems such as abandoned ghost towns in Arizona, quirky roadside attractions along Route 66, or natural wonders like Antelope Canyon in Arizona or Niagara Falls in New York. These lesser-known spots offer a chance to experience something different from mainstream tourism and give insight into local culture and history.
Whether you choose to stick with tried-and-true sights or explore lesser-known destinations depends on what kind of traveler you are â but no matter where your interests lie, there is always something new waiting around every corner on your bus journey adventure!
Supportive for walking and standing
This section provides recommendations for items that can alleviate discomfort and facilitate mobility during periods of prolonged standing or walking.
When selecting shoes for a bus trip, it is important to prioritize comfort and support over fashion. Look for shoes with thick soles and arch support to prevent foot fatigue and pain. Additionally, shoes with adjustable straps or laces can provide a custom fit that will keep your feet secure during bumpy rides.
In addition to comfortable footwear, consider bringing compression socks to improve circulation in your legs and reduce swelling. Stretching before and after long periods of sitting or standing can also help alleviate discomfort.
Finally, if you know you will be standing for extended periods of time on the bus, consider bringing a small folding stool or cushion to provide extra support while waiting in line at rest stops or attractions.
By prioritizing comfort and mobility when packing for your bus trip, you can enjoy the journey without being held back by discomfort or fatigue.
Easy to slip on and off
Ensuring ease of use when selecting footwear for extended periods of standing or walking is an important consideration, as it can save valuable time and energy when getting on and off the bus. Slip-on shoe options are a great choice for travel because they allow for easy on and off without the hassle of laces or buckles. Look for slip-on shoes with a comfortable sole that provides support for your feet during long periods of standing. Opting for breathable materials such as mesh or leather can help keep your feet cool and dry during warmer weather.
Comfortable footwear is key when traveling by bus, especially if you plan on exploring new destinations once you arrive at your destination. Slip-on sneakers are a versatile option that can be dressed up or down depending on the activity. If you prefer sandals, look for ones with adjustable straps to ensure a secure fit while walking. Itâs also important to consider the size and weight of your shoes when packing â bulky shoes take up precious space in your luggage. By choosing lightweight slip-on options, youâll have more room in your bag for other essentials while still ensuring comfort during travel.
This table highlights some slip-on shoe options that provide comfort while traveling by bus. The comfort level is rated out of ten based on personal experience, with factors such as arch support and cushioning taken into account. The material column suggests different options to choose from depending on personal preference and weather conditions at the destination. By selecting slip-on shoes that are comfortable and easy to put on and take off, youâll be able to enjoy your bus trip without worrying about foot pain or discomfort.

Backpack or small luggage
When selecting a backpack or small luggage for your upcoming bus trip, it is important to consider the size and weight restrictions of the bus company. Many bus companies have specific guidelines regarding the size and weight of bags that passengers are allowed to bring onboard. Choosing the right bag can make a big difference in your comfort during transportation, especially if you plan on carrying it with you throughout your trip.
One option to consider is a backpack, which has its pros and cons. Backpacks are great for those who need to carry their belongings with them at all times. They distribute weight evenly across both shoulders, making them comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. However, they may not be suitable for travelers who have back problems or difficulty carrying heavy loads.
Alternatively, small luggage such as rolling suitcases offer more space and tend to be easier on the back but can be inconvenient when navigating through tight spaces or crowded areas.
To help you choose between a backpack or small luggage for your bus trip, here are some factors to consider:
- How long your trip will be
- The amount of belongings you will need to bring
- Your personal preference for style and convenience
- Any physical limitations that may affect your ability to carry certain types of bags

The Best Road Trips in the USA (and Why You Should Travel Them by Bus!)
For those of you that don’t know me, I have an extreme penchant for buses. In fact, I once took a bus trip clear across the United States! Now, I’m not recommending that you spend 2+ days on a bus like I did, but there’s no denying that bus travel is a special way to go.
One of the main advantages to bus travel is that you don’t have to own or rent a car, have your license, pay for insurance, or any of the other pesky details that you might otherwise have to consider if you wanted to do a road trip. It’s also frequently more affordable (because even if the ticket price is about the same as the cost of gas, you don’t have to worry about being charged through the nose for baggage). Beyond that, you can actually look at the scenery around you, rather than having to focus on the road! Buses these days are adding more and more amenities like WiFi and comfortable seats, so really, there’s no reason not to hop onboard.
The Heartland
I think a tour through central USA is a must-do during your lifetime. Not only is the region very distinct from other regions of the US, but it also is home to some lovely scenery. You’ll start in the south and travel up through all different types of landscapes no matter what you pick as your origin and destination. But my preferred route for escaping the tourists and getting a more authentic look at the south (plus some pretty scenery!) is from Orlando to Columbus . You’ll start along the coast in Florida, pass through serene Savannah, cultural Charlotte, cross the amazing Appalachian Mountains, and end up in Ohio. There’s plenty to do in each city that this makes for the perfect weeklong trip.

A drive along Route 66 , sometimes called the Mother Road of the USA, is the classic American road trip, but it’s just as much fun done by bus as it is by car. Start in glitzy Chicago, Illinois and head south and west towards the paradisiacal Santa Monica, California, passing through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona along the way. It’s the best way to see a big swath of the US during your trip, from rolling cornfields to cities. It’s a pretty long bus journey to do all in one go; what I’d recommend is picking a few places to stop in between the two cities and booking a multi-city ticket. For a slice of Americana, you at least will want to visit the timeless Las Vegas strip!

The Pacific Coast
What could make for a more perfect summer than a trip up the coast of California ? The Pacific Coast Highway is one of the most scenic drives in all the United States, and it’ll take you from Los Angeles up through San Francisco. If you haven’t had enough of the seafood and sunshine, keep heading north towards Portland and Seattle and you can visit these two quirky cities. Or check out the national parks along the way in California, such as Big Sur or Redwoods. Again, I’d plan on booking a multi-city ticketâbut this time, more because there’s just so much to get out and see along the way!

New England’s Foliage
I love New England at any time of year, whether it’s hopping down the coast of Maine or hiking through upstate New York. But having grown up visiting my grandparents in Vermont, New England during the fall foliage season will always hold a special place in my heart. The best places to view the foliage will vary from year to year, but a safe bet is to start your trip in Boston, head up to Portland, ME, pass through the White Mountains as you head over to Burlington, and then head back south through the Green Mountains. In fact, a fall foliage bus tour is such a popular idea that many tour companies offer guided tours so that you don’t need to book that multi-city ticket or accommodation on your own, making it easy for you to relax in the splendors of nature.

The Powder Route
I’m an avid skier, but skiing trips can get expensive, especially when you have to factor in airline baggage fees and other assorted charges. But many bus companies will allow you a certain number of free checked bags, making it easy to bring all your gear with you. Hop from Steamboat Springs to Salt Lake City to Tahoeâor just head from wherever you normally live to your favorite resort . And when you’ve exhausted yourself skiing for too many days in a row, hop back on the bus and head homeâand enjoy the fact that instead of having to pay attention during that rush hour traffic, you can put your seat back and take a nap!

Chicago-Las Vegas-LA
Two Lane America has created a masterpiece road trip on the mother road, Route 66. My wife and I traveled in June 2019 from South Florida to discovered how important Route 66 was and still is to this wonderful country
Our #1 bucket list trip was absolutely perfect, thanks to Austin Coop. The planning and research can be a bit overwhelming. With Two Lane America you can relax and just enjoy the trip as everything has been planned for you.
Charlayne H.
We were strangers from Ohio, Wisconsin, Virginia, Arkansas, California, and Holland, soon to become friends as we caravaned in our own vehicles from Chicago to Santa Monica on much of old Route 66 with 2LaneAmerica. We worried about nothing except buying gas or incidentals.

When you’re traveling long-distances by bus there are a few essentials you should never forget. Find out what to bring on a long bus ride!
What to Bring on a Long Bus Ride
Written by:Â Jessica Lippe
While traveling light is useful for most trips, itâs especially important when taking the bus. In my experience, almost all bus companies allow you to put a bag under the bus, but you wonât have access to these until you change buses or reach your destination.
It’s important that the bag you place under the bus has lockable zippers. Follow these tips so you don’t become a victim of theft.
On board, youâre allowed to bring a SMALL personal item, such as a backpack or large tote. Make sure to always store your valuables in this on-board bag and never leave it unattended. Use a packing cubes  to keep your belongings organized. Â
A long-distance or overnight bus ride does require a few unique items for a comfortable experience. Here are my top tips on what to bring on a long bus ride!
Travel Sheet
Large Scarf or Thin Blanket
Since the AC can be a bit chilly at times, itâs nice to have something to cover up with. A sleeping bag liner or other thin travel blanket can be very useful. If you donât need any bedding at your destination, a large scarf or sarong is a great space-saving substitute for a blanket. A scarf makes an awesome addition to any travel capsule wardrobe .
Here are the top 5 benefits of traveling with a sleeping bag liner !
Neck Pillow
Travel Pillow
Inflatable pillows are the most travel friendly option but you can also use a compression sack as a makeshift pillow. A compression sack is packing organizer where you store your clothing or other bulky items.
Here are ten more neck pillow style s for you to choose from!
Zella Live In High Waist Leggings
Comfortable Clothes
Wearing comfortable clothes makes it so easy to change in cramped spaces, sleep, and go on whirlwind tours at your layover cities. Leggings, loose pants, and casual but comfortable tops are all highly recommended.
Find out the best leggings for women that travel !
Healthy Snacks Care Package Cookies
Bus drivers do occasionally take meal breaks, but it may not be at your desired eating time, and youâll only have fast food or gas station dining options.
Most long-distance bus companies are okay with passengers eating on board, so bring healthy snacks and other easy to store foods.
Hydrapak Stash Water Bottle
Water Bottle
If you forget to bring a water bottle, you may get dehydrated between rest stops. Always bring water with you especially on “off-the-beaten path” journeys when you don’t know when you’ll get a chance to buy food and water. (If there’s not a bathroom on the bus, ration your intake.)
Fire HD 8 Tablet with Alexa
Entertainment
Even the same bus company in one country will have varying entertainment options on each bus. Some offer WiFi, personal TVs with a selection of movies, or may even have a bus driver who doubles as a tour guide.
On the other hand, some buses offer nothing in the area of entertainment.
When planning what to bring on a long bus ride, itâs best to expect the worst and come prepared with headphones, eBooks, offline movies, or anything else that will help you fight boring legs of the trip.
Bring chargers onboard as some buses have outlets under the seats. You can also bring a portable power bank to charge small devices.
Take a look at our list of portable power bank chargers .
Personal Alarm
Hidden Whistle
This is one of those things youâll hopefully never need but isn’t a bad idea to have as a solo female traveler. If your seat mate is treating you inappropriately, threaten to blow the whistle, get the driverâs attention, and get your seat mate kicked off the bus.
Another good idea is to sit near the front of the bus especially if you are traveling alone.
Here are more safe travel essentials .
Waze Social GPS, Maps & Traffic
Thereâs nothing more stressful than being dropped off at your destination and having no idea where in the city you are.
Even if you don’t have WiFi on the road, if you set up directions on Google Maps it will usually track your journey if your Location Services setting is enabled on your phone.
This is also a useful tool on the bus, because you can use it to figure out how much further to your destination. It can be especially helpful if you donât speak the same language as the driver.
Without sunglasses, thereâs very little you can do about the glare shining through the windows. You can also nap wearing sunglasses instead of an eye mask.
What you take to help you sleep will depend a lot on your current sleep preferences, but know that sleeping upright in a moving vehicle with 50 other people is going to be a lot different from your own bedroom.
Many people bring sleep masks, ear plugs, lavender oil or lotion, and melatonin or another drowsy-inducing medication.
Tissue Packets
These are a must on any travel journey! Don’t ever count on toilet paper being readily available so having one or two of these tissue packets in your bag is essential.
A few other good reasons to bring these: the circulated air on a bus may trigger allergies; you might need to wipe your hands or face; or you may need to clean surfaces near your seat.
Hand Sanitizer
Hand Sanitizer and/or Wipes
Stay healthy on the road by disinfecting your hands before and after eating. Wipes can also serve as a shower substitute if needed!

I’m a former tour bus driver. I still like to travel by motor coach. I’ve always taken a shower caddy with me. I use one that has suction cups and attach it to the window once I’ve cleaned the window with a disposable alcohol prep. I can put my drink, cell phone, maps, snacks, etc. in it. Very handy.
Hi Terry, thank you for sharing your essentials for packing for a bus ride! Happy travels! ?
Compression socks are great since you will be sitting a lot on the bus. We have found having a small dog collar to clip bags, purse, hats, etc. to your luggage, backpack, walker helps to keep your hands free. I also carried a cane with a fold up seat if you need to sit if standing for long periods causes you pain.
Hi Pamela, thank you for sharing your travel essentials for a bus trip with us! Happy travels! ?
Thanks for the tips. I think that if you make a check list of things your going to need and then tick them off once youâve put them in your back can help a lot. Going to a dance final in Oxford in June so will come in handy ( itâs 4 hours)!!
Hi Megan, totally agree about the check list! Have you seen our ultimate packing list, which you are able to customize for your own travels and needs as well as save it and print it out: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/packing-list/ Have an incredible time in Oxford!!
I always bring a manâs handkerchief. Not every bathroom has paper towels. Wash them out at night and they are good to go.
Hi MeMe, thank you for sharing your packing essential for a long bus ride! đ
Instead of the water bottle I take a travel coffee mug. The insulating qualities work for me for water, coffee or fill it with tomato soup.
Hi Mike, that is a great travel tip, thanks for sharing!! đ
Hi thatâs really handy will try it out
I now travel with my portable Ladies urinal. It is in its little silicone bag with wipes and a few sheets of tp. Buses likecthe Greyhound can be very unpleasant and you simply don’t want to sit down so this way with practice beforehand you can go on the move!
Good for aircraft and suspect toilets in different countries too!
Great tip thanks Carol!
Motion sickness Meds and cough drops. If you sit next to someone with a less than desirable scent, too much perfume, cough drops help mask the smell.
GREAT tip! Strong perfume is my pet peeve
Tysm for all these great tips!
Great tips! I don’t usually wear scarves but I’ll have to remember to pack a scarf next time just to use as a makeshift blankie. đ
You can always bring this scarf and it will also act as several dresses too: https://travelfashiongirl.com/convertible-wrap-dress/
Rather than using Google maps, it would be better to use Here maps. The app is available on both iOS and Android. Here allows you to download the country/region you are going to ahead of time so you do not waste expensive data and if you are in a spotty area. The only time Here would need to use data is when you search for something (you can star all the sites that are important addressees ahead of time to eliminate the data cost) or if you need to update traffic (this can be turned off). I have been using some alliteration of Here (Nokia maps) for over a decade and never had issues.
Awesome tip Jenny, thank you!

These Milton Academy students are transforming an old bus into an RV, and 2.2 million followers are along for the ride
W hat do you get when you cross a group of high school seniors, an end-of-year project, and an old school bus bought off Facebook Marketplace?
The answer, much to the surprise of the Boys with the Bus , is more than 3.4 million likes on TikTok and 2.2 million Instagram followers.
The whole world has been closely following the group of Milton Academy students as they renovate a school bus into a full-fledged RV, complete with electronics, plumbing, a roof deck, and more. Their mission? Finish this bus in one month and take it on a coast-to-coast road trip over the summer.
âWhen we first hit 10,000 followers, I was like, âWow, weâre famous,ââ said Kevin Han, one of the groupâs 11 members, in a Zoom interview on Wednesday with the Globe. âAnd then 10,000 became 100,000, and then 1 million â every number just kept feeling less and less real.â
The past month has been a nonstop stream of working on the bus â with typical days ranging from nine to 10 hours â and editing and uploading their videos to the various platforms to show their progress.
âWith the social media aspect a little bit, it can get a little consuming, [but] as far as the work, I think weâve all just had a ton of fun,â Ben Rhodes-Kropf, another member of the group, said.
But this isnât a story about students setting out to go viral; theyâre driven by schoolwork. Milton Academy requires seniors to participate in a monthlong, self-proposed project throughout May instead of attending classes. While other students might be making a documentary film or writing a research paper, the five seniors who are officially signed onto the bus project â Han, Rhodes-Kropf, Justin Chen, Benjamin Siegel, and Sebastian Romero â decided back in February they wanted to do something more physically challenging despite not having much experience with projects of this magnitude.
âI think 90 percent of the group had little to no experience with power tools, almost no experience with electrical, any of the skills that you would check to say, âWe can renovate a school bus,ââ Rhodes-Kropf said.
Something not very complicated, surprisingly enough, was buying the bus itself. After scanning Facebook Marketplace, they were able to track down a seller in Hyde Park, visit with a mechanic, receive the proper paperwork, and park it outside Chenâs house, where itâs sat ever since. Through a loosely binding document whipped up by Rhodes-Kropf, the students agreed to contribute money from their savings toward the bus and its renovation, which ended up totaling close to $18,000.
âThereâs more school buses than you might think that are available,â Chen said. âA lot of buses are just sitting in a junkyard somewhere.â
From there, six of their other friends â Charlie Anthony, Ainsley Madden, Matty Abati, Katherine Risden, Vijay Thakore, and Thatcher Brown â hopped on board to help, bringing the total number of workers to 11. All but two, Madden and Risden , will be on the trip come July.
Their lack of experience means the project hit some speed bumps, not only during construction, but also on the legal side of things. Theyâre currently working on getting the bus reclassified as an RV, something they said is a lengthy process in Massachusetts. Still, they said they embrace their novice mind-set, as it adds to the challenge and the reward of finishing the bus the way they want to do it.
âWhat has been great about the project is that we havenât really had an âIs this going to work?â mind-set. Weâre more like, âHow are we going to make this work?ââ Anthony said.
Once they started posting about their project, attention came fast, with everyone from skier Mikaela Shiffrin to âMinecraftâ YouTuber PrestonPlayz (with 15.6 million subscribers) having interacted with their videos. (They were all particularly excited about the latter.) They recently landed a âGood Morning Americaâ segment as well.
âItâs almost difficult for [the sudden fame] to set in because of how busy we are,â Siegel said. âWe havenât really had time to sit down and contemplate.â
In some instances, theyâve relied on their viewers to help them.
âEveryone generally wants to help,â Han said. âElectrical engineers have commented like, âOh, I think this wire looks a little bit off,â or âmaybe try this,â or âmake sure everythingâs grounded.â Stuff like that has just been really incredible. They want to help us succeed.â
Their work includes building cabinets, wiring a refrigerator, and installing a toilet â something that interrupted their renovation plans when they discovered they needed one to get the vehicle reclassified.
âWeâre in this kind of âbus bubble,ââ said Romero. âWe havenât really left the bus in a month.â
Though an undoubtedly fun way to end their high school careers, the work has been tireless, with many saying they havenât had proper time to relax and spend time with family since construction began. The deadline crunch doesnât help either, with them needing to officially present the bus at school on Wednesday. However, the outpouring of support online has been a motivating factor.
âOne comment on social media that spoke to us was: âThis bus is now the bus for the entire graduating class of 2024,ââ Siegel said. âIt felt nice to know that itâs not just us, but thereâs kind of people around the world that love what weâre doing and connect with us.â
And they havenât lost sight of the original intent: to enjoy one last hurrah together before they go their separate ways after high school.
âThis is our last summer together,â Romero said, âand we just want to have a blast with it.â
