6 drive-through zoos and safaris in florida.

Family trip: Lion Country Safari

By Jill Martin

Sure, there’s plenty of wildlife in Florida, but have you ever viewed a giraffe from the comfort of your car?

You won’t find big screens or bags of popcorn at these drive-ins, but they're action-packed and provide lots of entertainment. Silence your cell phone and enjoy the show at these drive-through zoos in Florida.

1. J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge , Sanibel Island

Sunbathing gators, green herons, white ibis and a crocodile call this four-mile Wildlife Drive home. Roseate spoonbills can be found here year-round.

2. Lion Country Safari , West Palm Beach

Florida’s only drive-through safari boasts 800-plus animals, including wildebeests, rhinos and the world’s largest herd of captive zebras. But the giraffes steal the show at Lion Country Safari.

3. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge , Titusville

Amazing wildlife viewing is easy with the self-guided map that lists numbered stops along Black Point Drive. See gators, otters, turtles and hundreds of bird species, including eagles.

4. St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge , near Tallahassee

Rated five stars by birders, this seven-mile drive through zoo takes you past pinelands and salt marshes to Florida’s second-oldest lighthouse. Look for black bears, turkeys, deer and whooping cranes.

6.  Wild Florida , Kenansville

Features more than 200 animals, including exotics like zebras, sloths, lemurs and Watusi, and a walk-in bird aviary with pheasants, parrots and other birds from all over the world. Also: airboat tours, a drive-through safari park and animal shows.

Expanding across 85 acres of untouched scenic landscapes, our wildlife and safari park presents a unique opportunity to bring you up close and personal with wild animals such as giraffes, zebra, eland antelope, scimitar oryx, American bison, mouflon sheep, and more! As you travel down our two-mile “unbeaten path,” you and your family can enjoy an exploration just feet away from animals you normally only see on TV.

But the fun you’ll have isn’t confined to your car. Inside our drive-through wildlife park, you can meet, greet and feed giraffes on our elevated giraffe feeding platform. (Talk about the perfect Facebook profile picture!).

And witness the power and speed of the American alligator during our Gator Feeding Show as you learn how strong their bite is along with how high they can jump out of the water.

Orlando Family Fun Magazine

Camels, Cows and Emus, Oh My! – A Review of Wild Florida Drive-Thru Safari

Where can you see camels, cows, bison, and bobcats, all without leaving your car? At Wild Florida Drive-Thru Safari Park , in Kissimmee, which boasts an engaging and entertaining wild animal drive through safari. From emus to alligators, you will be able to see many different animals as you drive through this Florida safari park.

wild florida airboats

How it works

The premise of the drive-thru safari is simple. You enter the park and drive around the park on an unpaved road. Do not leave your car, as you will find yourself right next to the animals. As we drove through, we saw several animals come right up to our window to say hello (and we saw one emu that went from car to car pecking into the windows). As you drive along the curved 2+ mile road, you’ll find lemurs, alligators, and other animals alongside the road, and even in front of your car. On our visit, several cows caused a traffic jam.

Tip: As you enter the park, you are given a checklist, so ensure that you have a pen ready. Your kids can use it to check off the animals that they see as you drive through the park.

On the checklist that kids are given at the entrance, there is a fun fact about each animal that the kids can read to you and to each other. Most of the trail that you drive surrounds the park so many (but not all) of the animals will be on the driver’s side. However, if you feel like your kids didn’t get to see everything equally (or you just really liked it) as you exit, there is a turnaround that lets you re-enter the safari, and same-day re-entry is included in the ticket price. You may want to have the kids switch sides first, though and you can make a quick stop in the parking lot to do that.

Orlando Parents Recommends: If your kids love safari animals, check out the National Geographic store at ShopDisney . You can get stuffed safari animals, books with fun animal facts and more.

Be prepared to go slowly

Depending on how many cars are driving through at the same time, be prepared to stop frequently. The speed limit inside the park is 5 miles per hour but when we went, we were usually going even slower than that. Several families had their sun-roofs open and let taller kids stand through them to see everything. You need to stay alert while driving as the animals will cross the road as well.

Orlando Parents Recommends: I use Rakuten to get rebates on my everyday shopping online and then use the money that I have saved to go out to dinner with the family.

Other things to do at Wild Florida

Wild Florida also has a walk-through exhibit where you can learn more about alligators, zebras, watusi, and other animals, as well as talk to the staff about how they keep the animals safe and healthy. There is a playground here so kids can play and run around in a safe environment. For kids who can’t keep their hands to themselves, there is a petting zoo where they can pet and feed baby animals.

And if you don’t feel like staying on land, Wild Florida Airboats (part of the greater Wild Florida complex) also offers exciting airboat rides. Normally, these rides are scheduled for either a half-hour or hour, but you can book private tours as well. As the boat flies along Cypress Lake, the tour guide will help you find alligators, eagles, and other animals that live along the marsh. This all-ages ride is sure to excite every member of your family, from the littlest kids to the biggest. That’s if the little ones don’t fall asleep from the vibrations in the boat.

Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, both the walk-through exhibit and airboats are closed until further notice, but this gives you a good reason to return. One fun activity that is still open is the giraffe feeding. As you finish your drive, you can park your car and pick up some leaves at the giraffe feeding stand. Hold them out and the giraffe will come and pluck the leaves from you using its prehensile tongue. It’s a lot of fun, but depending on the timing, you could be closer to people than you want to be. It is something you should do with caution.

Tip: While the temptation is there to keep the windows down the entire time to see everything better, you should be warned that especially on a hot day, the outside smell can become overwhelming.

Overall, Wild Florida Drive-Thru Safari Park is a great way to get out of the house and explore and see some exciting animals without having to come in contact with too many other people. Kids will be very excited to see cows, water buffalo, and bison on and around the road and both alligators and crocodiles in ponds.

This Florida Drive-Through Safari Park Is the Perfect Day Trip Adventure For Families

By: Author David Reeve

Posted on April 23, 2024

Florida’s very own Lion Country Safari beckons with the kind of adventure that doesn’t require you to hop on a plane or trek through the dense jungle.

Set in the Sunshine State’s lush backdrop, this drive-through safari park offers an exhilarating day trip for families craving a taste of the wild side, just a stone’s throw from home.

So, buckle up and prepare for an escapade that’s as close to a real African safari as you can get without needing your passport!

lion country safari 1

Through the winding paths of Lion Country Safari, nestled in Loxahatchee near West Palm Beach , you’ll find a world of wildlife that turns an ordinary weekend into an extraordinary exploration.

Every turn of the wheel brings you face to face with creatures most only see in storybooks or on screen.

Majestic lions laze under the Florida sun, embodying the spirit of the savannah.

Meanwhile, curious giraffes might just saunter up to your vehicle, offering a close-up look at their long lashes and even longer necks.

Traveling through this park is like leafing through an atlas, each habitat a stamp on your passport.

lion country safari 2

Now, you might be thinking that zoos are all about the animals, and you wouldn’t be wrong, but here, it’s also about the vibe.

The place is crafted so meticulously that you half expect your GPS to welcome you to a new country with every twist and turn of the path.

Look at the rhinos over there, chomping on grass like they’re at an all-you-can-eat buffet, completely unfazed by the human paparazzi.

It’s the animal kingdom’s version of celebrities going about their day—total nonchalance.

lion country safari 3

And the ostriches, they’re the divas of the bird world, aren’t they?

Strutting their stuff as if the park is their personal runway, feathers and all.

The bird melodies are like nature’s Spotify, each tweet and chirp a new track on the ‘Jungle Beats’ playlist.

It’s easy to get swept up in the rhythm of this wild, wonderful world.

It’s a place where you’re not just observing but a part of the scene, an extra in the most epic nature documentary never filmed.

And the best part?

No commercials.

lion country safari 4

Families often find that the safari ignites a sense of wonder in both young and old.

Children press their noses to car windows, eyes wide with amazement, as elephants use their trunks like nature’s own multi-tool.

Parents share in the delight, capturing memories with their cameras, the kind of shared experience that becomes family folklore.

When you’ve had your fill of the car-side critter cruising, it’s time to stretch those legs and dive deeper into the wild wonders on foot.

At Safari World amusement park, the animal antics are just getting started, and trust me, your snack bag isn’t the only thing that’s going to get lighter here.

Who wouldn’t want to have a giraffe as a new dining buddy?

These long-necked lovelies are the ultimate over-the-fence gossips, always eager for a snack and maybe a little chat.

And don’t worry, they’ll eat right out of your hand, literally.

Just don’t ask them about their height.

It’s a touchy subject.

lion country safari 5

But wait, the adventure’s not over yet!

Have you ever seen a macaw in flight?

It’s like a living rainbow that squawks, and these feathered show-offs love to strut their stuff.

They’re the daredevils of the bird world, and their aerial acrobatics will have you oohing, aahing, and maybe ducking—because, let’s face it, they don’t always stick the landing.

lion country safari 6

And let’s not forget the mischievous squad of squirrel monkeys.

These little rascals are the pranksters of the park, always up for a game of ‘steal the tourist’s sunglasses.’

But who can stay mad at those cute, fuzzy faces?

Just make sure to zip up your pockets, or you’ll leave with lighter luggage, and I don’t mean by giving it away willingly!

lion country safari 7

For those with a competitive streak, mini-golf and a maze offer a change of pace.

The splash park invites the little ones to cool off, a welcome reprieve from Florida’s balmy climes.

Indeed, Lion Country Safari serves up a smorgasbord of activities to complement the wildlife experience.

Dining options within the park ensure that your adventure doesn’t have to pause for hunger pangs.

Whether you opt for a quick snack to refuel or a leisurely meal to savor the flavors, there’s something to satisfy every appetite.

And let’s not forget the gift shop, where souvenirs capture the spirit of the day.

lion country safari 8

Safety is paramount, and the park’s guidelines ensure that the animals and guests are cared for.

Respect for the roaming wildlife is a given, and the privilege of being among them is a reminder of our place in the larger tapestry of life.

When the day wanes and the sun begins its descent, families depart with a trove of memories.

The laughter and stories from the day’s escapades fill the car on the journey home, the safari’s magic lingering long after the gates have closed behind them.

As the sun sets on your Lion Country Safari experience, your heart swells with the joy of discovery and the thrill of adventure.

To think, all this awaits right here in Florida, where the wild things roam and families forge bonds through shared discovery.

Monkey Jungle and other non-zoo Florida animal attractions to explore

We all know it isn’t hard to spot a gator, deer or iguana in Florida . But what about zebras, giraffes and monkeys?

If the zoo just doesn’t cut it for you, here’s a roundup of five non-zoo wildlife attractions you can visit throughout the state.

How much is a monkey jungle ticket?

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Just a 15-minute car ride south from Miami’s Zoo is a different kind of animal attraction.

At Monkey Jungle , over 300 monkeys, including some great apes, run free on 30 acres of subtropical forest in southern Miami-Dade county.

Monkey Jungle was established almost 80 years ago, in 1935 and is an affiliate of not-for-profit conservation effort DuMond Conservancy for Primates & Tropical Forests.

Monkey Jungle is open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the ticketing office closes at 4 p.m.

Tickets are free for children 2 years old and younger, $29.95 for adults and kids ages 10 or older, $27.95 for adults 65 and older and $23.95 for kids ages 3 through 9.

How much does it cost to drive through Lion Country Safari?

Lion Country Safari is a four-mile drive-through wildlife park with herds of zebra, rhino, giraffe and more. There are more than 900 animals roaming Lion Country Safari’s 600 acres of land in Palm Beach County and claims to be the first cageless zoo in the country.

The wildlife park, which opened in 1967, is located in Loxahatchee. Lion Country Safari is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Tickets are by person, not by vehicle. Soft top and convertible vehicles aren’t allowed, but Lion Country has some vehicles available for rent, which cost $35 every 1.5 hours. Tickets are free for children 2 years old and younger, $49 for adults and kids 10 and older and $37 for kids ages 3 through 9.

How much does it cost to go to Busch Wildlife Sanctuary?

Further north in Palm Beach County, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary is a refuge and nature center for rehabilitating and rescuing Florida wildlife.

Busch Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Jupiter Farms and has been rescuing animals since 1983. The park is more like a zoo than the other two, since the animals at Busch are in enclosures, but they have plenty of space to live comfortably on the sanctuary’s almost 20 acres. And the sanctuary’s animals are all rescues that wouldn’t survive out in the wild if they were to be released.

Busch also has a fully functioning animal hospital, where visitors can peek through windows in the lobby to see any animals being brought in for care.

Busch Wildlife is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is free, but they accept donations.

What animals are in the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge?

St. Marks National Wildlife refuge encompasses over 40 miles of Florida’s Gulf coast, covering a whopping 86,000 acres in Wakulla, Jefferson and Taylor counties.

It was established in 1931, when it was made a winter home for migratory birds. The refuge has a seven-mile drive that ends at Florida’s second-oldest lighthouse, where you can spot black bears, turkeys, deer, bald eagles and whooping cranes along the way.

The refuge is open year-round during daylight hours and costs $1 per person if you’d like to explore on a bike or on foot and $5 for people who want to explore in their car.

Can you feed the animals at Wild Florida?

Wild Florida is a drive-through safari park on Cypress Lake south of Orlando where more than 150 native and non-native species roam 170 acres of land.

You can see zebras, eland antelope, American bison, mouflon sheep and feed giraffes only an hour away from Disney World.

Florida resident tickets are $24 each for visitors 13 and older, $19 for kids ages 3 to 12 and free for children under 2 years old. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day but Sundays, when the park is closed.

You can also book extras like airboat tours and animal encounters like holding a sloth.

23. Grab unexpected views of Miami and Biscayne Bay from the eastern steps at the  Pérez Art Museum Miami  downtown. Sure, you can take in the same view from the terrace at Verde, the PAMM’s waterfront eatery. But you can also buy a cortadito at the Verde café stand and find a quiet space on the steps. A Pennsylvania couple drowned while swimming off Hutchinson Island on vacation with their teenage children

A couple caught in a rip current while vacationing at a Florida beach with their six children tragically drowned in front of them.

Brian Warter, 51, and Erica Wishart, 48, of Pennsylvania, were enjoying Hutchinson Island with their teenage kids on Thursday near the 100 block of Northeast Tradewind Lane.

‘While in the water, the couple and two of the teens got swept out by a rip current,’ stated the Martin County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook .

‘The kids were able to break the current and attempted to help their parents, but it became too dangerous and they were forced to swim ashore.’

Two of the couple's teen children who were also caught in the rip tide managed to break free

County ocean rescue crews found the victims and started administering CPR on the shore.

‘Those life-saving efforts continued in the ambulance and at the hospital where doctors gave it every last effort before declaring the couple deceased,’ wrote the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s crisis intervention team deputy assisted the kids for the rest of the day and evening until their other family members arrived.

Chief Deputy John Budensiek said one of the children ‘was trying to yell them instructions of how to swim parallel to the shore’ instead of fighting the current, ‘but they were in panic mode and, unfortunately, went under’.

A red flag warning was issued in the area again the day after the couple drowned

Warter’s neighbor, Susan Verdecchia, said he and Wishart had been dating for a couple of years and that their six children were from other relationships.

‘He was warm. Very considerate. Bright man. Loved his children. Was very patient with them,’ Verdecchia told WPTV . ‘He was a wonderful father and a really good neighbor. And we are very, very sad. And we’re gonna miss him.’

Lifeguards flew double red flags immediately after the deaths, signaling that no one was allowed to enter the ocean.

The couple died despite receiving CPR on the shore and life-saving measures

The red flag warning was sent out on Friday for Hobe Sound Beach, Jensen Beach and Stuart Beach, warning of ‘extreme rip current risk’ and four to six-foot waves.

‘Please do NOT enter the water if unsure of swimming ability and if you do, use a flotation device and stay close to shore,’ posted Martin County Fire Rescue on Facebook on Friday. ‘Always swim near a lifeguard.’

The couple died after a teenage boy drowned at Sandy Hook Beach in New Jersey over Memorial Day weekend last year, and five others were rescued.

A woman staying at a French safari zoo was attacked by several wolves on Sunday after she entered a part of the zoo usually accessible only by car.

“Luckily the medical staff intervened very quickly and we were able to save this person,” the zoo’s CEO Christelle Bercheny told a press conference.

The attack took place at about 9.30 a.m. at the Thoiry zoological park in Yvelines, approximately 31 miles west of Paris, French affiliate TF1 said.

After staying the night at the park, the woman, 37, went out jogging and accidentally entered the safari zone, TF1 reported, adding the area was a seven-hectare space where animals, wolves and bears roam freely.

TF1 said it was while she was running that the wolves “pounced” on her, adding that she sustained “serious” injuries and was bitten on the neck, calf and back.

The woman was treated at the nearest hospital and her condition has now “stabilized” TF1 reported.

The zoo has launched an investigation.
