Depeche Mode, Still Mourning, Return With Tour and New Album ‘Memento Mori’

By Kory Grow

During the peak of the pandemic, Depeche Mode ‘s members found themselves simultaneously making sense of Covid’s widespread loss while trying to appreciate life in the moment. Those two themes kept popping up when frontman Dave Gahan and singer and multi-instrumentalist Martin Gore were writing lyrics for what would become their 15th album. They embraced this idea by calling the album Memento Mori .

“The direct translation [for ‘memento mori’] is, ‘Remember that you must die,'” Gahan says via phone from Berlin, a few days before the band’s Tuesday press conference announcing Memento Mori . “A lot of the songs are going into that place of reminding ourselves that our time is fleeting, and you got to make the best of it — in a positive way.” Gore says he first heard the Latin phrase from a friend. “I just thought, ‘What a great album title for the songs that had been written already,'” he says.

Before they could get in the studio, though, the title took on far greater meaning for Gahan and Gore. On May 26, Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, who co-founded Depeche Mode and played synthesizers and bass in the group since 1980, died naturally of an aortic dissection. Did they second-guess the title after Fletch’s death? “I think it cemented it, if anything,” Gore says.

“Obviously, everybody will think that all of the songs were quickly written after Andy died,” Gore continues. “But everything was planned and ready to go. Unfortunately, Andy passed away when he was really looking forward to getting started with us. So I like the idea of ‘memento mori’ in a more positive way, in a ‘Live each day and make the most of your time here.'”

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, 25 most influential creators of 2024.

Even now, the two musicians are still making sense of their bandmate’s absence. “You don’t always get to say goodbye,” Gahan says. “With this, it was just one of those things where all of a sudden, Martin and I are sitting in a pew in a church together, and Fletch is not here anymore, just like that.”

“It’s obviously really hard to lose your closest friend,” Gore says. “Andy was there with me from way before the band and I feel like he was the one in the trenches with me the whole way. So it’s very tough.”

But Gore feels his bandmate would have wanted Depeche Mode to continue. “He was always seen as the glue of the band,” he says. “It would’ve been unthinkable for him to think that his death would’ve caused the end of the band.”

Gahan and Gore didn’t see each other face to face to work on the album until July. The singer feels that if Fletch were working on the album, he’d have joked, “Can we just stop talking about death?” “I missed that in the studio,” the singer says, “and I know Martin did, too. We felt like he was still there with us.”

The group opened the Berlin event with a short montage, showing close-ups of music gear as echoey, undeniably Depeche Mode music plays in the background. The soundtrack had a throbbing, fuzzy synth bass line and operatic vocals. Eventually, the camera pulled out to show the musicians together in the studio. Eventually, Gahan’s voice enters and he sings, “We know we’ll be ghosts again.”

Neither Gahan nor Gore feel ready to name any of Memento Mori’s song titles — days before the Berlin event, they’re not even quite sure what the final titles are for the musical selections they’re playing — but they say the structure of the album as a whole came together naturally. “To me, it’s got a cinematic quality to it,” Gahan says. “It takes you on a bit of a trip, starting in a place where we’re like, ‘This is my world,’ and ending with, ‘How do I make the most of it?'” The music, Gahan says, sounds melancholy but it’s also braided with hope and joy. The record will likely feature 12 songs with a few saved over as extras for a deluxe edition.

When asked in Berlin if the band will be paying tribute to Fletch on the tour, Gahan said the group was still figuring it out but had zeroed in on some of Fletch’s favorite Depeche Mode songs. “He’ll be there in spirit, I’m sure, judging us,” he said with a laugh.

In another light moment, a journalist asked if the band would ever consider doing an “unplugged” tour. “We can’t really unplug because we’re an electronic band,” Gahan said, chuckling. Gore added, “We can try it with battery packs or something.”

In an unusual move for Depeche Mode, the group will start its Memento Mori tour in North America instead of Europe. “I can’t remember the last time we started in America, if we ever have,” Gore says. “I’m sure we did at some point, but it just seemed like something different to do.” (The European leg will begin May 16. Some of the venues the group next year will play include Madison Square Garden, Chicago’s United Center, Twickenham Stadium and the Stade de France.) The band will return to North America in Sept. 2023 for another round of 29 arena shows.

Until then, they will press forward while continuing to grieve their friend and bandmate’s death. “It was very odd coming to Berlin and coming into a hotel where we have been with Andy many times, and just seeing the bar where we’d often seen sitting,” Gore says. “That was a bit of a reality check. Everything that we’re doing from this point forward is different, so we just have to put our heads down and do the best we can.”

Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode has returned to unveil a new album, “Memento Mori,” and accompanying tours of North America and Europe, all to kick off next year. The forthcoming album will be the band’s 15th studio effort and its first release since the death in May of founding member and keyboardist Andy “Fletch” Fletcher.

“We started work on this project early in the pandemic, and its themes were directly inspired by that time,” said Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore. “After Fletch’s passing, we decided to continue as we’re sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.”

“Memento Mori” will be Depeche Mode’s 15th studio album and the follow-up to 2017’s “Spirit.” While there is no official release date for the set just yet, the band’s reps confirm it will be arriving next spring, via Columbia Records.

The “Memento Mori Tour” is the band’s first in over five years, with their most recent trek being the 2017-2018 “Global Spirit Tour.” The Live Nation-presented tour will begin with a special, limited series of North American arena dates starting in late March, and will culminate in New York’s Madison Square Garden on April 14. After that, the band will head out to Europe for their summer stadium tour.

North American shows kick off in Sacramento, California, in March 2023, and take in a handful of cities in the United States and Canada, culminating in a Madison Square Garden concert on April 14. A huge arena tour of Europe follows. Check out the dates below.

European stadium stops include the Stade de France in Paris, Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, Milan’s San Siro Stadium, and London’s Twickenham Stadium. Depeche Mode Announces New Album and World Tour

Depeche Mode will release a new album next spring called  Memento Mori . They'll also launch a global tour, their first live performances in five years and first since the death of founding member Andy Fletcher. A specific release date for  Memento Mori  has not been revealed, but according to band members, work on the album began early in the pandemic.

"Its themes were directly inspired by that time," singer Dave Gahan said in a press release. "After Fletch's passing, we decided to continue as we're sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning. Fletch would have loved this album. We're really looking forward to sharing it with you soon, and we can't wait to present it to you live at the shows next year."

The  Memento Mori  Tour will launch in Sacramento, Calif., on March 23 and head east, stopping in several major U.S. cities plus three Canadian venues. They'll perform at New York City's Madison Square Garden on April 14, before going overseas for shows across Europe. You can see the complete list of concert dates below. The album, which is currently being finished by producers James Ford and Marta Salogni in London, marks the band's 15th LP and follows 2017's  Spirit .

In a recent interview with  Rolling Stone , multi-instrumentalist Martin Gore clarified that the album's title, which translates in Latin to "remember that you must die," was chosen before Fletcher died and that the songs were not written as a response to his death.

"Unfortunately, Andy passed away when he was really looking forward to getting started with us," Gore said. "So I like the idea of 'memento mori' in a more positive way, in a 'Live each day and make the most of your time here.'" Gore also emphasized that he and his bandmates feel that Fletcher would have wanted them to continue making music without him: "He was always seen as the glue of the band. It would’ve been unthinkable for him to think that his death would've caused the end of the band."

According to the band, Memento Mori  will most likely feature 12 songs, plus a couple of extra tracks that will be used for a deluxe edition. "To me, it’s got a cinematic quality to it," Gahan said. "It takes you on a bit of a trip, starting in a place where we're like, 'This is my world,' and ending with, 'How do I make the most of it?'"

Depeche Mode Returns With ‘Memento Mori’ Album, World Tour

The legendary band, now a duo, says some of their new songs "can't help but reflect" the absence of longtime member Andy Fletcher.

By Robert Levine

Depeche Mode

BERLIN — Depeche Mode will return next year with a new album, Memento Mori , and a tour that’ll launch with 10 North America arena dates, followed by more than two dozen summer stadium shows in Europe. At a press conference at the Berliner Ensemble on Tuesday (Oct. 4), band members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore said that they started working on songs during the pandemic, and that they decided to continue as an act after keyboard player and co-founder Andy Fletcher died in May .

Trending on Billboard

The album isn’t completely done – recording is finished but the songs aren’t yet mixed – and Gahan and Gore said their next stop is New York, to wrap it up. It is due out around the time the tour begins.

Dave Gahan and Martin Gore

5 Questions With Depeche Mode Ahead of Their Rock Hall Induction in 2020

At least one of the themes seems to be death – or at least the finiteness of life – as reflected by the title. “‘Memento Mori’ means ‘remember, you must die,'” Gahan said. So, Gore followed, “live each day to the max.”

In the studio, the two missed Fletcher. “We would miss Fletch,” Gahan says, “and some of these songs can’t help but reflect that.”

One of the first questions from the enthusiastic audience of journalists, associates and at least a few super-fans concerned existential issues. Then another journalist asked if the band might do some unplugged shows. After some nervous giggles in the audience, Gahan pointed out that “we can’t really unplug because we’re an electronic band.”

Everyone laughed.

“We could,” Gore added, “try battery packs.”

Depeche Mode Announce New Album MEMENTO MORI and 2022 Tour Dates

Depeche Mode 2022 Aton Corbijn

Depeche Mode is back. Following the tragic death of co-founding member Andy Fletcher in May 2022, surviving members Martin Gore and Dave Gahan have announced a new album, Memento Mori , coming next year. Also in 2023: Depeche Mode are set to hit the road, kicking off the Memento Mori tour in Sacramento, CA, on March 23, 2023. The North American dates wrap up at New York's Madison Square Garden on April 14, 2023. See the complete itinerary below.

“This is the first time the two of us broached that question: ‘Do we go on or do we end this now?’” Gahan said during a press conference in Germany today (via Billboard ). “And we said, ‘Let’s at least make this record.’”

“We started work on this project early in the pandemic, and its themes were directly inspired by that time," Gore said in a press statement. "After Fletch’s passing, we decided to continue as we’re sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.”

“Fletch would have loved this album," added Gahan. "We’re really looking forward to sharing it with you soon, and we can’t wait to present it to you live at the shows next year.” Click here for ticket information.

This week Depeche Mode announced a world tour and a forthcoming album, Memento Mori. It's the first new album by the British electro legends since 2017's Spirit, and the 15th in their hugely successful career. The title seems to be in tribute of and inspired by founding member Andy Fletcher's death in May, but DM's lead songsmith, Martin Gore, says the phrase was always in the works. “It sounds very morbid, but I think you can look at it very positively as well,” Gore explained in a German press conference this week regarding the title which means an object that’s kept as a reminder of the inevitability of death.

Embedded content is no longer available.

Gore said the momento, like a skull, could remind you that you should "live each day to the max."

The band will be hitting the road for the first time since 2018 (see their last setlist here ), starting in Northern California in Spring of 2023 and hitting just 5 big US cities and 3 in Canada before jetting off to Europe for the bulk of their tour.

Depeche Mode announce new album and tour

October 4th, 2022 by AnfieldMode

After a few weeks of speculation culminating in a frankly frenzied 24 hours when Clash magazine went a day too early with an online article, Depeche Mode have now confirmed some details about their new album and the tour in support of it. This afternoon in Berlin, Martin and Dave appeared at a press conference moderated by Barbara Charone. Sadly, she didn’t do a very good job of it but we got plenty of new information anyway. It opened with video of various pieces of equipment and Martin and Dave bobbing about in the studio with what appeared to be two new pieces of music soundtracking it. The first was a very electronic track with layers of processed Gore sounds swarming over it. Very nice. The second was a new song featuring the lyrics “Heaven’s dreaming” and, I think, “We all end up ghosts” sung by Dave. The music was a combination of the usual Martin guitar twang and very poppy electronics. When the boys appeared, they both looked and sounded fairly sad as you would expect. They mentioned Andy of course, talking about how much they miss him and how they keep expecting to see him. Martin mentioned walking past the hotel bar in Berlin when they arrived in the city and looking in there fully imagining he would see Andy there with a beer.  It must be very hard for them to do this without him. The album is called  Memento Mori  and will come out in late March 2023. They didn’t use the word “produced” but talked about James Ford being involved so we can I think presume he has produced it once again. They have recorded at Martin’s studio in Santa Barbara and at Rick Rubin’s studio albeit without his involvement. The band will now return to New York to finish the album. The album was planned and started before Fletch died and that includes its title which Martin selected. The tour dates have been announced too and most go on sale at the end of this week – check depechemode.com for details. It’s great to see them back and I really hope the album is a cracker. I’m pleased that they have finished off the plans they made when Andy was still alive as not only will the album and tour be a tribute to the great man but it will also allow fans to get together and properly celebrate his life. I’m looking forward to doing that and I look forward to meeting up with you all at a few gigs next summer. Welcome back Depeche Mode.

Who is Brad Delson? Linkin Park guitarist explains why he will not be joining the band on upcoming world tour

comment icon

Brad Delson is the popular lead guitarist of Linkin Park. Born on December 1, 1977, in California, Delson is an alumnus of the University of California, Los Angeles.

He will not join Linkin Park's upcoming world tour. On September 7, 2024, he took to Instagram and released a statement saying he would continue working with the band behind the scenes. He thanked Linkin Park fans for their support and love.

The band has recently added two new members, vocalist Emily Armstrong and drummer Colin Brittain, during their September 5 global livestream concert in Los Angeles. One of the band’s founding members, Rob Bourdon, reportedly departed.

Brad Delson wrote on Instagram;

“I’ve always felt deeply connected to and proud of our live performances. Over the years I’ve realized I thrive most when I’m actively working with my bandmates behind the scenes––in the studio, collaborating on our new music, and helping build our live show.”

The post continued;

“I am so proud of everything we continue to create together. While I will not be performing on tour in this new chapter, I am super excited to introduce Alex—my handsome deputy on the road. Alex is a world-class musician, a kind and thoughtful friend, and we are truly fortunate he’ll be contributing his unique talent to our LP universe.”

Brad Delson also announced that guitarist Alex Feder, who joined Linkin Park recently, will be taking on his role in the band’s performances in the future. Linkin Park has also released a new single, The Emptiness Machine , in which the new members have performed.

Brad Delson said Chester Bennington used to idolize Depeche Mode

In April 2023, band members Mike Shinoda, Dave Farell, and Brad Delson got into a conversation with Apple Music about Meteora’ s 20th anniversary and to honor former band member Chester Bennington (former lead vocalist). The lead guitarist said he loved Depeche Mode, and Chester would too.

“Chester idolized Depeche Mode. I mean I feel like he would probably have said like this is my favourite band about maybe multiple bands. I mean I love Depeche Mode. I feel Depeche Mode has this particularly strong influence on Lost. I hear that influence,” Brad Delson said.

He recalled hearing Chester’s voice on the demo without vocals, and on the same song, it sounded almost like a girl singing, adding a vulnerable and delicate quality to it. At the same time, the chorus had a guttural scream. Brad said both these elements were present in the song Lost. While talking about Meteora, he said,

“I think what’s like remarkable about Meteora looking back on it now is it really was a good problem to have and yet it was a problem that Hybrid Theory did become the biggest album in the world and we were like ten years old.”

Linkin Park’s upcoming album From Zero will be out on November 15 via Warner Bros. It will be the band's first full-length album since their 2017 One More Light , the last release before lead vocalist Chester Bennington passed away. The band is reportedly ready to kick off a six-date arena tour, with performances in Los Angeles, New York, Hamburg, London, Seoul, and Bogotá.
