Lagardère Travel Retail Secures Landmark Deal in Cambodia
![lagardere travel retail companies house Lagardère Secures Landmark Deal Cambodia](https://thesiliconreview.com/story_image_upload/article/thesiliconreview-lagardère-secures-landmark-deal-cambodia.jpg)
The Silicon Review 01 July, 2024
The contract represents Lagardère’s first direct duty-free operation in Asia and signals a major advancement in its regional development plans
France’s Lagardère Travel Retail has sealed a landmark deal in Cambodia, marking a significant milestone for the company in the Asia-Pacific region. Lagardère will use a profit-sharing model for the first time to run its three main business lines: food service, travel essentials, and duty-free and fashion.
In partnership with HSC Group, the operator of Burger King and Paris Baguette franchises in Cambodia, Lagardère Travel Retail has signed a 12-year contract with Cambodia Airport Investment Company (CAIC). This agreement covers the retail and dining operations at the forthcoming Techo International Airport, located approximately 15 miles south of Phnom Penh. Eventually, Techo International Airport—designed by British architects Foster + Partners—will take the place of Phnom Penh International Airport, which handled around four million passengers in 2023. It is scheduled to open in 2025. The airport is a 2,600-hectare greenfield site developed by CAIC, a joint venture between Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC) Group and the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation.
The contract represents Lagardère’s first direct duty-free operation in Asia and signals a major advancement in its regional development plans. The profit-sharing model, which aligns the interests of the operator and airport, is a pioneering approach in the region. Lagardère believes that this strategy has the ability to completely transform the travel retail sector. Séverine Lanthier, Lagardère Travel Retail’s Asia COO and chief strategy and development officer, hailed the agreement as a new chapter for the retailer. She believes that this innovative partnership with CAIC will set a precedent for future ventures in the industry.

Arnaud Lagardere , who had stepped down from his executive roles of chairman and CEO of the listed French media conglomerate Lagardere on April 29 after being indicted over embezzlement charges, is back at the helm of the company.
Lagardere had been provisionally banned from holding executive office by a Paris court and accused by French prosecutors of “misappropriating company funds.” His lawyers, Sébastien Schapira and Dimitri Grémont, then appealed the decision and were able to obtain on June 28 “the partial lifting of the management activities ban,” Lagardere Group said in a release.

Commenting on his comeback, Lagardere thanked Jean-Christophe Thiery who had served as interim CEO and chairman (and is also president of the supervisory board of Canal+) and said he was “obviously delighted to be resuming (his) position as Chief Executive Officer of the Group that bears (his) name and to be reunited with the talented teams that I now have the honor of leading to future success.”
He also thanked the directors of Lagardère SA, and the shareholders, “especially our leading shareholder, the Bolloré family – for their confidence, support and abiding concern for the proper governance of the Group and smooth continuation of its activities in the interests of all stakeholders, in particular its employees.”
Vivendi finalized the acquisition of Lagardere during the second half of 2023 after addressing anti-trust concerns which led the group to sell its other publishing group Editis and Gala magazine, a flagship title of Prisma Group. Perceived as Vivendi’s new crowned jewel, Lagardere saw its revenue rise by 16.6% in 2023, thanks to the travel retail and publishing activities.
With operations in over 40 countries worldwide, Lagardere has approximately 31,300 people in its payroll and generated revenues of more than 8 billion euros ($8.5 billion) in 2023.
