Logging in to Microsoft I get "Your browser is a bit unusual..." and cannot proceed

I am trying to log in to Microsoft account

I select “Work or School Account” Goes to GoDaddy login where I enter the password Then I get message that

 "Your browser is a bit unusual..." “Try disabling ad blockers and other extensions, enabling javascript, or using a different web browser.”

Then I cannot proceed

I have contacted GoDaddy and they say all is OK their side. This is on a fresh Windows Server 2022 installation. I tried other browsers; Edge, Chrome including incognito, Firefox including safe mode, checked javascript is not blocked and no extensions and reset

I tried every solution I found over several forums. I finally have a solution at least for those that have a second "User Account" that, which my PC created automatically. It is " ASP.NET Machine Account". So I simply went to sign out of my user account on my PC and signed into other account and Voila! it worked. BTW all of my windows and files were still open, which was a bonus. I assume it may be very possible that if you don't have a second "User Account" on your PC and you add one it could work as well.

Strange behavior when default browser is not Safari

After setting up a default browser different than Safari (Edge and Chrome tested), some apps are not opening links at all. For example, when using Messenger, and there is a link to website sent by your friend, I can’t open it until I set Safari as a default browser. Even, if the link refers to Facebook app. The same story is with TimeHop app - when trying to open one of the memories, it doesn’t work until you set up Safari as default browser.

I know how to change default browser and I did it properly. I understand, that I have to contact developer? Actually it means developers, because it is the same for Edge, Firefox and Chrome. It works only properly when Safari is set up as default browser.

You mentioned you are using Timehop, Messenger, and Facebook when you click the link and it goes to Safari. You'll need to confirm the option to open with Edge or Chrome is available from the app developers for Timehop, Messenger, and Facebook.

For the past four months, Apple’s iOS and iPadOS devices and Safari browser have violated one of the Internet’s most sacrosanct security policies. The violation results from a bug that leaks user identities and browsing activity in real time.

The same-origin policy is a foundational security mechanism that forbids documents, scripts, or other content loaded from one origin—meaning the protocol, domain name, and port of a given webpage or app—from interacting with resources from other origins. Without this policy, malicious sites—say, badguy.example.com—could access login credentials for Google or another trusted site when it’s open in a different browser window or tab.

Obvious privacy violation

Since September’s release of Safari 15 and iOS and iPadOS 15, this policy has been broken wide open, research published late last week found. As a demo site graphically reveals, it’s trivial for one site to learn the domains of sites open in other tabs or windows, as well as user IDs and other identifying information associated with the other sites.

“The fact that database names leak across different origins is an obvious privacy violation,” wrote Martin Bajanik, a software engineer at FingerprintJS, a startup that makes a device identification interface for anti-fraud purposes. He continued:

It lets arbitrary websites learn what websites the user visits in different tabs or windows. This is possible because database names are typically unique and website-specific. Moreover, we observed that in some cases, websites use unique user-specific identifiers in database names. This means that authenticated users can be uniquely and precisely identified.

Attacks work on Macs running Safari 15 and on any browser running on iOS or iPadOS 15. As the demo shows, safarileaks.com is able to detect the presence of more than 20 websites—Google Calendar, YouTube, Twitter, and Bloomberg among them—open in other tabs or windows. With more work, a real-world attacker could likely find hundreds or thousands of sites or webpages that can be detected.

When users are logged in to one of these sites, the vulnerability can be abused to reveal the visit and, in many cases, identifying information in real time. When logged in to a Google account open elsewhere, for instance, the demo site can obtain the internal identifier Google uses to identify each account. Those identifiers can usually be used to recognize the account holder.

Raising awareness

The leak is the result of the way the Webkit browser engine implements IndexedDB, a programming interface supported by all major browsers. It holds large amounts of data and works by creating databases when a new site is visited. Tabs or windows that run in the background can continually query the IndexedDB API for available databases. This allows one site to learn in real time what other websites a user is visiting.

Websites can also open any website in an iframe or pop-up window in order to trigger an IndexedDB-based leak for that specific site. By embedding the iframe or popup into its HTML code, a site can open another site in order to cause an IndexedDB-based leak for the site.

“Every time a website interacts with a database, a new (empty) database with the same name is created in all other active frames, tabs, and windows within the same browser session,” Bajanik wrote. “Windows and tabs usually share the same session, unless you switch to a different profile, in Chrome for example, or open a private window.”

Bajanik said he notified Apple of the vulnerability in late November, and as of publication time, it still had not been fixed in either Safari or the company's mobile OSes. Apple representatives didn’t respond to an email asking if or when it would release a patch. As of Monday, Apple engineers had merged potential fixes and marked Bajanik's report as resolved. End users, however, won't be protected until the Webkit fix is incorporated into Safari 15 and iOS and iPadOS 15.

For now, people should be wary when using Safari for desktop or any browser running on iOS or iPadOS. This isn’t especially helpful for iPhone or iPad users, and in many cases, there’s little or no consequence of browsing activities being leaked. In other situations, however, the specific sites visited and the order in which they were accessed can say a lot.

“The only real protection is to update your browser or OS once the issue is resolved by Apple,” Bajanik wrote. “In the meantime, we hope this article will raise awareness of this issue.”

"Your browser is a bit unusual" error upon redirect

We had a strange issue for a 90 minute period when users tried to authenticate via a SPA they hit a page with the warning “Your browser is a bit unusual… Try disabling ad blockers and other extensions, enabling javascript, or using a different web browser.” The users never could get redirected post login to the SPA.

• The issue affected multiple users but not all users during this time
• No code was pushed within 48 hours prior, no settings were changed for weeks prior
• The users were authenticating against an Azure AD enterprise connection.
• All users were using Chrome 101. The effected users tried to use other browsers and claimed to get the same result.
• The affected users claimed not to have adblockers. They also claimed to have not changed any settings about the browsers in use.
• The problem went away after 90 minutes, but nothing we changed to remedy the issue. They might have cleared their cache but they aren’t savvy enough to confirm that really happened.

I can’t find any mention of this error anywhere. I’m not sure what action I can take to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Was there an error message in the tenant logs?

There was a streak of messages of type: “Failed Silent Auths” with description “Login Required” but nothing else of interest was really in the raw data.

Safari is a popular web browser launched by Apple in 2003. In the past few years and through multiple upgrades, Safari has transformed into a power-packed, privacy-centric browser that aims to give you the best web experience in every session.

It also extracts information from your Contacts, Calendars, Credit Card, and other saved documents to auto-fill empty fields of forms and registration pages on your behalf. For sensitive information such as credit card details and passwords, Safari uses a special 256-bit AES encryption.

Safari also helps you create stronger passwords the first time you’re signing up for an account. You can either opt for traditional passcodes with a combination of numbers, letters, and symbols or go for advanced face ID or touch ID for better security. 

To minimize spamming from websites, Safari provides a unique feature called “Hide My Email” in collaboration with iCloud. Under this, instead of suggesting your actual email, it’ll suggest an alias to the website you’re signing into. This will help you recognize the spammers, and you can cut them off by simply deleting the alias email address.

Safari claims that it takes minimal battery power. Compared to Firefox and Chrome, Safari offers up to 3 hours of additional browsing and 4 hours of additional video streaming.

Safari browser: Privacy

Safari offers a decent level of privacy. It may not completely stop data collection from third parties, but it minimizes the transfer of user data to a great extent. On top of that, users get access to all its privacy settings by default, ensuring they’re protected from the get-go.

You can also modify the privacy settings if you want. For example, you can adjust how often you want your web history deleted or tell websites not to track your information, such as location or contact details.

We recommend adding a VPN to your arsenal, which, along with Safari, will prove to be the security you’ve always wanted on your device.

Safari is pretty easy to use. The address bar is at the top of the screen, and you’ll find the open tabs stacked right below it — much like Google Chrome.

The only thing we didn't like about Safari was some of the features, such as Tab Grouping, were slightly hidden on its Mac Version. You’ll have to click on the Page Icon for a panel to appear before you can use the grouping feature. 

Safari browser: Competitors

Safari’s biggest competitors are Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. But thanks to its features and outstanding performance, it’s not too far behind them in the race. 

For starters, a speedometer test by Safari revealed that it's almost 1.4 times more responsive than Chrome and Firefox. 

Another series of tests found that when the macOS is used for animation rendering and Javascript, Safari is 2 times and 1.4 times faster than Chrome and Firefox, respectively. 

With such outstanding performance, it's no wonder that millions of users are flocking to Safari every year.

Another benefit of Safari is that it's lightweight and doesn't take up too much battery power. In fact, compared to other browsers, Safari gives you at least 3 to 4 hours of additional battery life.

Also, unlike Edge, Safari lets you pick and put any picture you want as the browser's background. While Edge and Chrome let you experiment with multiple themes, Safari goes a step ahead and lets you personalize it.

Managing tabs with Safari is easier than most browsers. You can group them together, label them for quick searches and attach them to a particular Focus Mode to reduce the crowd of tab groups. No other renowned browser offers this feature.

Compared to Chrome and Edge, Safari is much more serious about user privacy and data leaks. After all, it has developed a whole new technology (Intelligent Tracking Prevention) just to combat that. 

It also comes pre-installed on every Apple device, be it an iPhone or Mac. If you’re a proud Apple device owner, there’s no reason you shouldn’t try Safari since there’s no trouble downloading and setting it up.
