WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Alaska Cruises Insider

The sheer size of Alaska lends itself to a wide variety of terrain and travel experiences. This diversity means you need to be prepared for a lot of change while traveling.

The best time to travel to Alaska depends on your priorities. If you're interested in the Midnight Sun, the longest day of the year is June 21, when you can experience close to 20 or more hours of sunlight in some parts of the state. If you're more interested in the Alaska Northern Lights, the earlier sunset in later summer will allow more contrast and better views of this natural wonder.

No two days will be the same, and you'll need to pack your clothing to prepare for temperature changes throughout the day. Think layers: zip-up sweaters, boots, rain jackets.

Best Helicopter Tours to Take when Flying over Alaska

Alaska Helicopter Tours

There's nothing quite as exhilarating as a helicopter tour over Alaska's sprawling landscapes. Take your breath away as you travel above its amazing glaciers.

Alaska is not a formal place; people even wear jeans to the opera. Focus more on comfort when deciding what clothing to pack.

Cameras, binoculars, rain ponchos and jackets are useful, but add these to the souvenirs you'll be picking up and soon your bag will be too heavy to tote around. Bring along a quality day pack to make it easier to hold your necessities.

Learn a few words in Alaska's local lingo: The "Alcan" is the Alaska-Canada Highway, for example, and "fish stories" are the local version of tall tales — unreliable yarns of mythological proportions, often told by fisherman.

ALASKAN CUISINE WILD IS THE WAY

Alaskan food focuses on locally sourced ingredients that reflect the state's rugged terrain and the vast oceans surrounding it. These nutrient-rich waters serve up some gorgeous fish and shellfish, from super-fresh salmon to huge Alaskan King Crabs that can feed a crowd, while game meats and berries from the wilderness form a perfect marriage of flavor.

Best Alaska Smoked Salmon

SALMON IS CENTRAL

Fresh-caught wild salmon is served up at backyard BBQs and the finest restaurants. For something different, try the sweet and savory treat Indian Candy, salmon that is sweetened and smoked till hard.

Typical Alaskan Sourdough Bread

SOURDOUGH WON'T LET YOU GO

Sourdough is such an important part of Alaskan culture that long-time Alaskans are actually called sourdoughs in local parlance. Try a sourdough bread bowl filled with salmon chowder for a hearty lunch.

Alaskan Wild Berries Pie Dessert

GO WILD FOR BERRIES

Alaskan wild berries are sweet and pack a powerful punch of flavor. Whether served up in jams, candies, pies or cobblers, Alaskan blueberries, high-bush cranberries and other local wild berries are a staple when it comes to Alaskan summer eats.

RELATED PORTS

Whether you're interested in hiking through a forest, trekking to glaciers or a shopping spree downtown, the towns along Alaska's inside passage provide a variety of adventurous activities. Alaska cruise ports such as Juneau and Ketchikan are small cities with their own personalities. Anchorage is the state's largest city and a gateway to the rest of the state. Glacier Bay National Park

Passengers with a park ranger at glacier bay on board Alaska cruise

When you cruise to Alaska with Princess, sail through one of the most iconic locations in the Great Land — Glacier Bay National Park. Listen to Margerie Glacier’s signature crack and boom rumble across the waves. Bring binoculars and scan both the shore and the waves for wildlife like brown bears and migrating whales while Park Rangers teach you the history and geology of the park.

Hubbard Glacier

Two men taking a photos of hubbard glacier on Alaska cruise

The largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier has been moving its mass towards the ocean at a rate faster than most of its kind. Towering above the water over 30 stories, the glacier often calves 100-foot chunks of ice into the ocean. What lies beneath the waves is almost as impressive, where ice plunges 1,200 feet beneath the surface. See it for yourself on an Alaska cruise with Princess.

Icy Strait Point

Icy Strait Point is home to the remote Tlingit village of Hoonah, home to fewer than 800 people and a deep Native history. The nearby Spasski River Valley holds one of the world’s largest populations of brown bears, who are often found hunting for salmon in the rivers. Zipline over the wilderness, watch a tribal dance or kayak in coastal waters to see the wildlife up close during your Alaska cruise vacation.

Gondola Lift at Juneau on an Alaska cruise

Juneau is unlike any other city in the United States. With no roads connecting it to the rest of Alaska or North America, it is truly a protected destination. Founded as a gold mining town and now the state’s capital, Juneau has one foot in history and one in the future. Embark on a whale watching tour, or sail past Mendenhall Glacier on an Alaska cruise.

Victoria, B.C.

Butchart Gardens in Victoria B.C

At first glance many mistake Victoria for an English coastal city or northern European town. Full of greenery, pubs and Victorian architecture, it's difficult to believe that this was a tent city full of rough and tumble miners just 150 years ago. On a cruise to Alaska, explore the Butchart Gardens, tour the pub scene and taste some of the local brews or sail the bay for a whale-watching adventure.

Alaska Cruise Experience

Princess has a 50-year legacy of sharing the best places and experiences with guests. On an Alaska cruise, unpack once and explore glaciers, wildlife and national parks.

What to Expect on an Alaska Cruisetour [ Land + Sea Vacation ] Cruisetours combine a 7 day cruise with a multi-day land experience, with a choice of visits to Denali, Kenai, Copper River, Canada's Yukon Territory, Anchorage, Haines, Talkeetna, and Fairbanks. The Most Popular Route: Anchorage-Denali-Fairbanks The typical Anchorage-Denali-Fairbanks [ or in reverse order ] cruisetour is offered before or after a north - or -southbound Gulf of Alaska Voyage of the Glaciers cruise, sailing between Vancouver and either Seward or Whittier, the two main docking ports for Anchorage. When you disembark your cruise ship you will head for Anchorage via motorcoach or, if they're sailing with Princess Cruises, board a "direct to the wilderness" train directly at Whittier to Denali. The train gets you there sooner.  From Anchorage you go on up to Denali National Park, a 6-million-acre preserve  full of wildlife (bears, moose, dall sheep, fox, eagles and more), massive glaciers and majestic mountains and valleys, sweeping views of subarctic tundra, and Denali (formally known as Mt. McKinley), North America's highest peak at 20,320 feet. Travelers stay at lodges in or around the park perimeter, some owned directly by Princess. After a one or two day visit you'll go by train to Fairbanks, which is a hub for amazing activities in its outlying areas, including paddle-wheel day cruises on the Chena and Tanana rivers, jet-boat rides, and excursions to gold mines and retired dredges. Passengers typically fly home from Fairbanks.  Anchorage-Denali-Fairbanks cruisetours generally run between 10 and 14 nights. A typical route, such as Princess's popular "Denali Adventure" tours, spends two days at Denali and one in Fairbanks, with the option of adding a second day in Fairbanks and one in Anchorage. Optional extensions to Kenai Peninsula and/or the Wrangell - St. Elias National Park and Preserve.

One of the Biggest Reasons People Visit

Glaciers feel alive. They groan, creak and shudder on their march to the sea, punctuated by the booms and crashes of "white thunder" - a sound that echoes across the water when ice calves into the ocean below. On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier.

Alaska is home to a rich array of wildlife, from the famous Big Five animals that live in Denali National Park - grizzly bears, wolves, moose, Dall sheep and caribou - to bald eagles and humpback whales that migrate through the Inside Passage. National Treasures

With national parks and four of North America's tallest mountains, Alaska's wilderness has been preserved for generations. Denali National Park is larger than Vermont and home to the highest peak on the continent. Meanwhile, Glacier Bay National Park has over 2,000 square miles of glacial coverage. Along with Wrangell-St. Elias and Kenai Fjords, a world of natural wonders awaits on an Alaska cruise or cruisetour.

Alaska Excursions Don't just visit this famous land, live it on Alaska excursions. Rush across the snow on a dog sled with a professional musher, fly fish for salmon in fresh rivers and soar over miles of glacial tundra in a helicopter. Watch migrating humpback whales from the deck of a catamaran or Native craftsman carve a traditional totem pole, and expand your Alaska cruise experience. Learn more about Alaska Excursions

Alaska: Whales, Wonders & Wildlife After the kind of year we just had, now that we're cruising again, we think you've earned it: Spend Summer in Alaska. One very cool place. One hot destination! One great geyaway!

You Can A-Fjord These Adventures Watch for wildlife as you cruise through enchanting fjords, narrow inlets surrounded by massive glacial walls. At places like Misty Fjords or Kenai Fjords, you'll sail across the edge of where mountains, volcanic formations and turquoise waters converge. Be sure to snap a photo while you're there.

Take A Hike Take a hike with great naturalist guides while visiting Talkeetna and Denali Alaska. Stretch you legs on trails from easy to epic. See Denali ( Mt. McKinley ) without national park crowds and all day bus tours. Owners Howard and Noelle Carbone have shared the wonders of Denali with Alaska's visitors since starting the family business in 1993. Princess guests staying at the Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge can take the Byers Lake Nature Walk and Denali Wilderness Hike. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity guests staying at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge can take the Talkeetna Lakes Hike.

Glacier Sight-Soaring Generally, Alaska glaciers are viewed from one angle, so you can see that they are massive, but flightseeing - taking a small, low-flying plane over the landscape for a true bird's-eye view - allows you to see just how vast these rivers of ice can be. Take up an excursion out of Misty Fjord in Ketchikan, or soar above the massive Denali mountain with a Talkeetna adventure tour group. You may even get the chance to climb one of these icy giants.

Six Million Acres Of Discovery Towering high in the center of the Alaska Range is the Denali, North America's tallest peak at 20,310 feet. Central to the cultural heritage of the native peoples who have lived here for thousands of years, the giant mountain is the ultimate symbol of the Alaskan wild. Denali National Park remains a wild kingdom, where animals large and small, roam free. View Dall sheep, wolves, caribou, moose and the mighty grizzly bear among many. And come summer, they are joined by more than 160 species of migratory birds.

Guest Comments & Testimonials

Wolf, Moose, Caribou, Eagles,

Whales and Bear!

" Our trip was excellent. The room, with the upgrades, was amazing! We saw many eagles (bald and golden), one bear, many whales, including one breach, seals, one bear, one wolf, moose and caribou, and many smaller animals.. If we travelled during salmon run, we probably would have seen more bear and eagles. The scenery is to die for, the vistas spectacular. The ship was great; service, food, etc were all great. Thanks for everything."

"Pat and I returned from an 11 day trip to Alaska. Truly The Last Frontier. We had the pleasure of traveling with 6 of our very dear and close friends, Mike & Susie, Ron & Rachel and Craig & Diane. We saw incredible scenery, moose, mountain sheep and goats, humpback whales, dolphins, and a wolf. We examined Denali (aka Mt. McKinley ) up close and personal in a small airplane. We watched in awe the calving of the immense glaciers in Glacier Bay. The weather was absolutely beautiful."

cruise tours alaska 2023

"The weather this week was incredible, 70 and sunny. Never saw a bit of rain...but, lots of whales, eagles, porpoise, bear, moose etc."

"What can I say. We felt like we were on a National Geographic cruise. Eagles, whales, sea lions, moose, bear and caribou; we saw them all. We had the best weather imaginable too. Both days at McKinley were cloudless! We saw the whole mountain range morning, noon and night and night and night!  The position of our room was great, 11th floor mid ship. We loved it."

"I just wanted to thank you for all your help. Packer Expeditions was excellent and I would highly recommend them again for anyone looking to do a glacier hike. Also, we ended up being upgraded to an outside cabin...It was a truly welcome surprise to say the least. It made all the difference in the world both having a window (even though it was an obstructed view) and having a larger cabin. Alaska was totally awesome and we thoroughly enjoyed the land tours. All the coach drivers and tour folks were very knowledgeable and helpful. So next time we are looking for a cruise I will be in touch! Thanks again, Ann."

"Hi Marty! When I originally started to research cruises and Travel Agents to help with the process, I was overwhelmed (Let's face it, sometimes the internet can be a good thing and sometimes it can be a bad thing).  I am so happy that I can across your website. I sure didn't expect the response that I received from our family and friends when I started planning the cruise, and you were there every step of the way putting up with my cabin changes, adding new guests at the last moment, and removing guests in some cases, too! You were amazing and I know for a fact that you are responsible for our worry-free and amazing journey. Everyone that joined us on the cruise was extremely impressed at how well the whole thing fell together with little trouble on their parts. Again I can not thank you enough, and don't forget that we will be planning another one !"

Royal Caribbean Cruises

In Alaska Glacier Views Are Just The Tip Of The Iceberg The rugged southeastern coast represents some of nature's best work. The intricate waterways of the Inside Passage. The high cliffs of Misty Fjords. The deep bays that welcome whales every summer. Where life is centered around the water, a cruise is the ideal choice. But a journey into the interior reveals so much more. Mighty rivers fed by massive glaciers. The vast taiga forests and rolling tundra of Denali National Park, and towns where moose stroll the streets. With a Royal Caribbean Cruise tour, you enjoy both. By combining a seven-night sailing along the southeastern coastline of Alaska with a small-group tour, it's a complete Alaska adventure. If you're going the distance, discover the best of Alaska by land and sea.

Bear Witness, a Photo Essay Incredible photography of wildlife in Alaska

Alaska National Parks: Treasures of the Last Frontier The native Aleuts named this place Alyeska - the Great Land - and it's easy to see why. Possessing half of the U.S. National Parks, Alaska's vast wilderness truly offers some of Mother Nature's best work. Here you'll witness epic drama, with soaring mountains, giant glaciers and dazzling wildlife. Stretching across millions of acres, Denali National Park and Preserve and Glacier Bay National Park are Alaska's top two attractions, but sister parks - Wrangell-St. Elias, Kenai Fjords and Denali State Park -share equally in beauty and natural wonders . Be sure to visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska's wildlife through conservation, education, research and quality animal care. Up close experiences: Walk on the Wild Side, Bear & Moose Encounters.

Discover Denali's Big 5 Wildlife

These links will take you the National Park Service Website ( use your back button to return here )

Bear can be found almost anywhere, from the forests along the Alaska coast to national parks further inland like Denali National Park and Preserve, where a plethora of berries keeps these permanent residents well fed. In addition to bears, Denali is an ideal place to observe the wide-antlered caribou, moose, gray wolves and Dall sheep, the latter identified by its curled horns. Together, these wondrous animals constitute the "Denali Big Five," a sightseer's dream. For many visitors adventuring to the park, a major goal is to see wildlife. Five mammals in particular capture visitor's imaginations and are so popular they are now referred to as the big five. The assortment includes gawky moose browsing in the willow, throngs of caribou loping across the tundra, the iconic Dall sheep nestled high on the hillsides, formidable wolves on the prowl, and lumbering grizzly bears devouring blueberries.

An Expert's Guide to Booking the Perfect Alaska Cruise in 2023

Alaska Cruise 2023 An Expert's Guide to Booking the Perfect Voyage to Suit Your Travel Style

Alaska has been a popular cruise destination for decades, and the industry has continued a trajectory of growth. Each summer season there seems to be another cruise line sailing Alaskan waters, while the longtime incumbents are relentless in their addition of new itineraries, amenities, and excursions.

What looks like an endless buffet of choice can lead to analysis paralysis for many first-time Alaska visitors—even if they’re veteran cruisers who have already figured out big questions like their preferred cruise line or favorite ship class.

Here are five questions to consider in order to find the best Alaska cruise for you.

When is The Best Time to Book?

Alaska is a popular destination for multi-generational groups . Any large group booking multiple cabins or needing more than a pair of spots on shore excursions should start thinking about booking Alaska cruises about a year in advance to secure the best availability for their group size. So too should travelers who have specific non-negotiables on things like stateroom category, ship, or itinerary.

However, that doesn’t mean that last-minute bookers are out of luck. While popular itineraries and cabin categories have a tendency to sell out early (balcony accommodations are particularly sought after for scenic Inside Passage cruising), there’s still often enough inventory left for cruise lines to offer enticing deals for the summer during the “wave” booking season from January through March. They’ll even offer last-minute specials right up until the time of sailing, but selection will be limited and the most popular shore excursions will have long wait lists.

Cruise lines offer enticing deals for the summer during “wavequot season from January through March.

Cruise lines offer enticing deals for the summer during “wave" season from January through March.

Is it better to cruise one-way or roundtrip?

Like almost any choice one makes when booking a cruise, it all comes down to personal taste. Roundtrip cruises offer the convenience of embarking and disembarking at the same port (typically Seattle, Vancouver, or San Francisco), but itineraries are generally limited to Southeast Alaska and the Inside Passage.

Visitors wanting to see Alaska’s Interior, Fairbanks, and Denali National Park , should book a one-way cruise to or from Anchorage (which is served by the cruise ports at Whittier and Seward) for land-based touring either before or after their Inside Passage cruise. Many cruise lines, including Holland America Line , Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity offer fully packaged “Cruisetours” that combine a one-way Inside Passage cruise with a rail or motor coach itinerary mainly focused on Denali, but also offering journeys to other parts of Southcentral Alaska.

Is Seward or Whittier a better port for Anchorage?

Each cruise line has their preferred port—Holland America Line and Princess Cruises berth at Whittier. Norwegian, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas—currently berthing at Seward—will move operations to Whittier upon completion of berths currently under construction. Most other one-way cruises berth in Seward.

Whittier is closer to Anchorage, and some itineraries even take disembarking passengers directly to Denali or Talkeetna the same day. Whittier is also a convenient port for cruising College Fjord, which most northbound sailings do on the final day before arriving in Whittier. Whittier is, however, a tiny community that is little more than a deep-water port, while Seward is a larger community and regional base for a more diverse collection of tours and activities.

Seward is farther from Anchorage, but the train or coach ride is roughly an extra hour of travel through a spectacular mountain pass on the Kenai Peninsula, then the lines merge near Whittier and the last hour of the journey is the same, hugging the Chugach Mountains alongside Turnagain Arm south of Anchorage.

It’s worth noting that shoreside transportation outside of cruise line-operated transfers can be more limited in Whittier, so passengers embarking there may wish to ensure they include transfers from Anchorage in their cruise package. From Seward, travelers wanting to spend a few days exploring Kenai Fjords National Park or one of the wilderness lodges can book Alaska Railroad transfers on their regular scheduled service.

I've been to Alaska before—how can I cruise differently?

Cruisers who are veterans at Inside Passage itineraries on the big ships have really only seen a preview of the nooks and crannies of the region. Indigenous-owned Alaskan Dream Cruises operates small-ship sailings from Sitka, getting into the straits and narrows that the big ships won’t fit, and oftentimes determining itineraries by reports of sea life migrations and weather conditions.

Return visitors who still want that big ship experience might try a different category of cruise line. The major operators—Princess, Holland America, Celebrity, are all premium-tier cruise lines, but the luxury cruise lines have also deployed ships to Alaskan waters.

Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth is operating roundtrip Vancouver sailings, bringing onboard topflight lecturers ranging from adventure traveler Bear Grylls to undersea archaeologist Mensun Bound on select voyages. On every voyage, guests will find guides from Alaska Native Voices, sharing the cultural history and lore of the local Huna people to  Sit’ Eeti Gheeyi  (Glacier Bay National Park), and guest speakers from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

10 Trips in the United States Everyone Should Add to Their Bucket List

Silversea has “Door-to-Door” pricing on many of its Alaska cruises , meaning the cruise fare includes airfare, hotels, and all transfers—including transfers from home to the departure airport. Onboard the all-suite ships, there’s butler service in every suite, fine dining, and select shore excursions included. The largest Silversea ship sailing to Alaska also carries just under 600 guests, allowing for port calls at lesser-visited stops like Wrangell, Haines, and Valdez.

Are there less-crowded alternatives?

Hurtigruten, the Norwegian expedition cruise line, offers sailings between Vancouver and Nome , hitting not only the lesser-visited spots on the Inside Passage, but also the virtually untouristed and volcano-dotted Alaska Peninsula, where guests can spot Brown Bears in Katmai National Park, go bird-watching in St. Paul Island and uninhabited St. Matthew Island in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, and explore the eerie ghost town of Unga.

Closer afield, but no less secluded is the Prince William Sound Explorer from Uncruise, where guests will depart Whittier and wake up among the glaciers of little-visited Icy Bay on the Kenai Peninsula. Much of the itinerary is “Captain’s choice” based on conditions and sealife movements, but the massive Columbia and Meares glaciers and the Sound communities of Cordova and Valdez—also off the big ship routes—hold prized spots on the itinerary.

Evaluating Alaska Cruise Lines for Adults

When considering the best Alaska cruise line for adults, you need to evaluate several key factors to ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience. Take into account the following aspects to make an informed decision that aligns with your preferences and expectations.

Key Factors for Adult Travelers

  • Itinerary Variety: Look for cruise lines offering diverse itineraries that cater to adult travelers’ interests. Whether you prefer wildlife excursions, cultural experiences, or adventure activities, choose a cruise line that provides a range of options to explore Alaska’s beauty.
  • Onboard Amenities: Prioritize cruise lines with upscale amenities designed for adult guests. From elegant dining options and luxurious spas to sophisticated entertainment venues, ensure the onboard facilities enhance your comfort and relaxation throughout the journey.
  • Small Ship vs. Large Ship: Consider the size of the cruise ship based on your preference for a more intimate or lively atmosphere. Smaller ships offer exclusivity and personalized service, while larger vessels provide a broader range of dining and entertainment choices.
  • Adult-Oriented Activities: Opt for cruise lines that feature adult-oriented activities such as wine tastings, educational lectures, art classes, and yoga sessions. These offerings cater to adult interests and provide opportunities to socialize with like-minded travelers.
  • Exclusive Excursions: Choose a cruise line that includes exclusive excursions tailored to adults, such as guided nature hikes, photography tours, or culinary experiences led by local chefs. These specialized activities add a unique touch to your Alaska cruise adventure.

The Prime Season for Adult Cruising

Alaska’s cruising season typically runs from May to September, with each month offering distinct advantages for adult travelers. Consider the following factors when determining the prime season for your adult cruise experience:

  • May & September: Ideal for travelers seeking quieter sailings and lower prices. These months provide a serene atmosphere with fewer crowds, allowing you to immerse yourself in Alaska’s natural beauty in a more tranquil setting.
  • June & July: Perfect for those interested in wildlife viewing opportunities, as these months coincide with the peak season for observing whales, bears, and other local wildlife. Experience the breathtaking wildlife encounters that Alaska is renowned for during this period.
  • August: Best suited for travelers interested in warmer weather and vibrant foliage. August offers pleasant temperatures for outdoor activities and scenic cruising, with the landscape adorned in stunning fall colors as summer transitions to autumn.

By considering these key factors and the prime seasons for cruising, you can evaluate Alaska cruise lines effectively and select the one that best caters to your preferences as an adult traveler. Plan your voyage wisely to ensure a fulfilling and enriching experience exploring the wonders of Alaska.

Tips for Choosing the Best Alaska Cruise Line

Comparing costs and inclusions.

When selecting the best Alaska cruise line for adults, cost and inclusions play a significant role in your decision-making process. Ensure you compare the overall cost of the cruise, including any additional fees for onboard activities or excursions. Look into what is included in the cruise price – some cruise lines may offer all-inclusive packages, while others might charge extra for various amenities and services. By comparing costs and inclusions upfront, you can choose a cruise line that aligns with your budget and provides the best value for your money.

Considering Ship Size and Amenities

Ship size and amenities are crucial factors to consider when choosing an Alaska cruise line tailored for adults. Larger cruise ships typically offer a wide range of onboard facilities, including multiple dining options, entertainment venues, and wellness centers. On the other hand, smaller ships may provide a more intimate and immersive experience with personalized services and unique excursions. Consider the amenities each cruise line offers, such as gourmet dining experiences, spa treatments, and enrichment programs, to ensure that your cruise aligns with your preferences and desires for a memorable Alaskan adventure.

So there you have it – a glimpse into the world of Alaska cruises tailored for adults. From luxury to adventure, there’s a cruise line out there waiting for you to embark on an unforgettable journey. Remember to weigh your options carefully, considering costs, amenities, and ship size to find the perfect fit for your Alaskan escapade. Whether you’re seeking gourmet dining, spa indulgence, or enriching activities, there’s a cruise line that caters to your every desire. This island just happens to be perched atop a coral reef, which promises hours of snorkeling or scuba diving fun. Cruises to Cozumel dock at the island's heart — just minutes from San Miguel's seafront shops and the white sand beach at Chankanaab National Park. Drift among star corals and sea fans on a Cozumel diving excursion or simply kick back on the beach beneath your own palm palapa as the turquoise waves roll in. New Orleans

cruise tours alaska 2023

New Orleans, with its richly mottled old buildings, its sly, sophisticated - sometimes almost disreputable - air, and its Hispanic-Gallic traditions, has more the flavor of an old European capital than an American city. Townhouses in the French Quarter, with their courtyards and carriageways, are thought by some scholars to be related on a small scale to certain Parisian "hotels" - princely urban residences of the 17th and 18th centuries. Visitors particularly remember the decorative cast-iron balconies that cover many of these townhouses like ornamental filigree cages. European influence is also seen in the city's famous above-ground cemeteries. The practice of interring people in large, richly adorned above-ground tombs dates from the period when New Orleans was under Spanish rule. These hugely popular "cities of the dead" have been and continue to be an item of great interest to visitors. Mark Twain, noting that New Orleanians did not have conventional below-ground burials, quipped that "few of the living complain and none of the other." The spine of Uptown, and much of New Orleans, is the city's grand residential rue, St. Charles Avenue, which was aptly described in the novel "A Confederacy of Dunces": "The ancient oaks of St. Charles Avenue arched over the avenue like a canopy... St. Charles Avenue must be the loveliest place in the world. From time to time... passed the slowly rocking streetcars that seemed to be leisurely moving toward no special destinations, following their route through the old mansions on either side... Everything looked so calm, so prosperous." The streetcars in question, the St. Charles Line, represent the nation's only surviving historic streetcar system. All 35 electric cars were manufactured by the Brill & Perley Thomas Company between 1922 and 1924 and are still in use - truly a national treasure. Creole cottages and shotgun houses dominate the scene in many New Orleans neighborhoods. Both have a murky ancestry. The Creole cottage, two rooms wide and two or more rooms deep under a generous pitched roof with a front overhang or gallery, is thought to have evolved from various European and Caribbean forms. The shotgun house is one room wide and two, three or four rooms deep under a continuous gable roof. As legend has it, the name was suggested by the fact that because the rooms and doors line up, one can fire a shotgun through the house without hitting anything. Some scholars have suggested that shotguns evolved from ancient African "long-houses," but no one really knows. It is true that shotguns represent a distinctively Southern house type. They are also found in the form of plantation quarters houses. Unlike shotgun houses in much of the South, which are fairly plain, New Orleans shotguns fairly bristle with Victorian jigsaw ornament, especially prominent, florid brackets. Indeed, in many ways New Orleans shotguns are as much a signature of the city as the French Quarter. One of the truly amazing aspects of New Orleans architecture is the sheer number of historic homes and buildings per square mile. New Orleanians never seem to replace anything. Consider this, Uptown, the city's largest historic district, has almost 11,000 buildings, 82 percent of which were built before 1935 - truly a "time warp." New Orleans' architectural character is unlike that of any other American city. A delight to both natives and visitors, it presents such a variety that even after many years of study, one can still find things unique and undiscovered.

The beautiful island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico, is a paradise for divers from all over the world. The island is surrounded by more than 25 reef formations where divers of all ages and skills can enter into a completely fascinating and different world: endless coral inhabited by immense shoals of colorful fish. The possibilities are interminable for both beginners and experts. East of the Yucatán Peninsula, on top of the age-old structures of the Mayan coral reef, the second largest in the world, stands the Island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico. Its name, derived from the word Cuzamil, meaning “island of swallows” in Maya, conjures up memories of its pre-Hispanic origin, the conquest of America and the pirates and buccaneers that thronged its seas. The Island of Cozumel measures 48 km from north to south but only 16 from east to west. On either side of the island, beaches form a long, white sandy coast. Gentle waves and transparent waters wash the western side of the island, while huge waves crash against the eastern side. Its flora and fauna have a number of unusual features and include certain endemic species, such as the dwarf raccoon and the Cozumel wren. Cozumel’s greatest wealth, however, lies underwater.

Inside Graphite One: A look at Alaska’s largest graphite deposit

tents

Located just over 30 miles north of Nome, the Graphite Creek property is believed to be one of the largest known graphite deposits in the world. The entire deposit spans about 10 miles along the Kigluaik mountain range, just south of the Imuruk Basin.

“That certainly makes it special from a mineralogic standpoint, a longevity of operations and job opportunities standpoint and of course, the area, just in its natural setting, is also quite special and unique,” said Graphite One’s vice president of mining, Kevin Torpy.

Torpy, an industry veteran, regularly travels back and forth from Nome to Graphite One’s camp, where the Canadian mining company has set up a large complex at the base of the mountains.

RELATED: Tesla needs graphite. Alaska has plenty. But mining it raises fears in nearby villages.

a kitchen

The camp is complete with a large laundry tent, a mess hall that serves half-pound smoked cheeseburgers, and high-speed Starlink internet. Employees are talkative. For the uninitiated, it defies expectations of a mining site. Torpy credits a carefully developed company culture.

“We as a management team all the way up to our CEO and down to our site supervision treat people like we want to be treated, we try and make it a fun place to work,” Torpy said. “Beyond that, every one of us is incredibly proud of what we do, and we like our employees to take pride in what they’re doing.”

The camp has about 30 tents, each containing dividers to create personal living spaces for the approximately 50 on-site workers. A large water treatment facility sits on the north side of the camp near the mess hall and laundry facilities. There are several large administrative tents, lined on the insides with foldable tables packed with gear.

a drill pad

Drill sites for core sampling are a short, muddy drive from the base of the mountains. There, the regularly relocated drill platforms pepper the mountainside. On the drive up, the droning sound of a rotating, diamond-bit drill only gets louder.

The drills are digging as deep as 500 feet to extract core samples. The samples, relatively homogenous in color and slick to the touch, are indications of high mineralization of graphite. The samples extracted from the mountain are placed in cardboard boxes and shipped back to Graphite One’s camp in Nome for further analysis.

a drill operator

The core samples also give clues to Graphite One’s team of geologists for where they may expect to find water, a crucial step in designing a mining pit down the road. Graphite One’s chief geologist, Kirsten Fristad, explained why the hydrology work the team conducted this summer is so important to the company’s future mining plans.

“You want to understand just how the water flows through the rocks that are there right now. As soon as you start making the pit shell, you’re essentially making a bathtub,” Fristad explained. “Any water that falls into the pit has to get treated before it gets released.”

a core sample

The data is being fed into a software called Leapfrog Geo that generates a 3D model of the deposit. With the flick of a mouse, the team can pan around the model to look at the data from various angles. The software is also creating a more accurate total amount of graphite in the deposit, a key figure at the heart of Graphite One’s feasibility study.

The study is set to be complete by the end of 2024, thanks in part to  funding from the U.S. Department of Defense.  According to Torpy, the study will help Graphite One understand whether or not the project is profitable.

“Really, the intent of it is to demonstrate whether or not there is an economically favorable project here,” Torpy said. “Is it economically feasible to build this operation as contemplated in that particular report, given the market conditions considered at the time.”

Environmental concerns

a camp

Like many mining projects, Graphite One’s is not without potential environmental issues. The Graphite Creek property is situated near several streams, including its namesake creek and Glacier Canyon Creek, that feed into the Imuruk Basin. The basin is a known habitat for a variety of salmon species. Land near the site is also used for game hunting and berry picking.

Graphite One plans to construct a private road through Mosquito Pass linking the pre-existing Kougarok Road to its camp on the other side of the Kigluaik mountains. The Kougarok Road itself would need to be strengthened and widened to accommodate the heavy haulers the company plans to operate year-round.

Graphite One intends to keep the camp, mining pit and a section of the Kougarok Road plowed and usable, snow or shine.

Before any mining begins, though, Graphite One will need to earn numerous permits. Torpy says the multi-year permitting process will involve several state and federal agencies.

“So in Alaska, I’d say it’s one of the highest permitting bars, certainly, of any jurisdiction I’ve been in,” Torpy said. “It’s an extensive amount of science that goes into it well before a permit is even applied for. And then even more rigorous afterwards.”

Graphite One has also convened a subsistence advisory committee composed of people from nearby villages. The committee recently advised on impacts to hunting after Graphite One’s helicopters appeared to be a nuisance to moose.

As currently planned, Graphite One would essentially carve out a large hole in the side of the mountain. Like steps on a staircase, large shelves would wrap around the edges of the pit. Explosives would be used to break the shelves into small pieces that are then hauled away by trucks for light processing on site.

Once mining activities are complete, the company would begin reclamation work on the site. The pit, however, would leave an indelible mark on the mountainside, serving as a permanent reminder of the activities undertaken by Graphite One.

Balancing conservation with consumption

mountains

From a fabric tent at Graphite One’s camp in Nome Fristad, the geologist, glanced around the room.

“There’s a saying: ‘If it’s not grown, it’s mined,’” Fristad said. “Look around you and start noticing every physical object that is surrounding you and what it’s actually made out of. It doesn’t just come from the store, there’s a whole supply chain before that, and there’s mining operations and production that happens before it gets to us. And just know that everything around us comes from somewhere.”

The demand for graphite in North America is  expected to increase by nearly a factor of 12  by the end of this decade as goods like electric vehicles surge in popularity. While the critical mineral is currently mined in countries such as China, Madagascar, and Mozambique, the U.S. has yet to establish its own domestic supply.

Graphite One seeks to fill that gap, offering a potential U.S.-based solution to the growing demand. As a fourth-generation miner, Torpy emphasizes that modern mining companies must balance meeting this need with a sense of responsibility for the environment.

“Most people want all these things that have in general, improved life for society and had negative impacts in other ways,” Torpy said. “But you know, it all comes from somewhere. There’s been a massive internal cultural shift that’s probably not obvious to many who aren’t in the industry, to see how much people care, there’s an expectation that it’s going to be done right.”

Graphite One is also poised to scale its operation to meet long-term demand. The scope of its current plans encompasses just one mile of a 10-mile stretch of land along the Kigluaik Mountains known to contain high-grade graphite.

To exhaust that first mile of graphite, Graphite One expects the current mine to operate around the clock for over 20 years.  According to the project’s pre-feasibility study,  the one-mile deposit could generate over $6.8 billion in pre-tax cash flow. The exact value of the entire 10-mile range would take further testing to determine.

Despite operating in the area for over a decade, Graphite One’s project is still in its early stages, with many hurdles to clear before any mining can begin. With growing demand for graphite, how the project navigates environmental concerns and community engagement will continue to be a matter of local and national interest.

Aankomst: 05.30 uur. Vertrek: 21.00 uur.

hotelinformatie: Overnachting in Anchorage Area Hotel
