In fact, this canyon is also known as Smit Valley by the local population.The route to this canyon may be slightly challenging, but tourists are assured of an adventure to get to the canyon. This falls is more like a smaller version of a hot spring as the water here is known to be refreshing and is ice cold too. However, you are not allowed to swim in its premises due to safety reasons. The locals have created an accessible route to make the path easy, but either way, it is nothing less than an adventure. • Continuing your exploration and visit the majestic waterfalls of Meghalaya like the Nohkalikai Falls which has a heartbreaking behind its name. According to the legend, a tribal lady named Ka Likai went to the forest for her daily work, leaving her 2nd husband and daughter behind. As she returned home, she was served lunch by her husband, which made her happy. She noticed that her daughter was missing and thus, went out in search of her but found her in pieces in a betelnut basket. Upon realizing that the meat she was served was of her daughter, she ran towards the cliff in sorrow and jumped off. Thus this waterfall got its name Noh-Ka-Likai means “the leap of Likai”.
• Exploring Mawlynnong which is renowned as the cleanest village in Asia is also one of the major highlights of this Meghalaya Trip. Then, you will head to the scenic town of Shnongpdeng for exciting water activities on the Umgnot River. Make a stop at the captivating Krang Shuri Waterfalls in Jowai before reaching Shillong, the bustling capital of Meghalaya. Conclude your adventure with a visit to the breathtaking Laitlum Canyon, offering panoramic views of rolling hills and deep gorges. Finally, return to Guwahati, cherishing the memories and experiences gathered throughout your journey.

Arrive at the Guwahati Airport/ Railway Station and meet our representative. (Your arrival should be before 9-10 am).

You will then board your transfers to Cherrapunji.

En route, visit the Umiam Lake located at the entrance of Shillong and is encircled by forest-covered Khasi hills.

Next, we will take a photo stop at the Mawkdok View Point which is a vantage point to a V-shaped valley with lush green slopes on either side.

Further, you will travel on scenic mountain roads to reach Cherrapunji.

Reach Cherrapunji and check-in to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Have breakfast in the morning and prepare for an adventurous day.

Today, we will head to Tyrna village to start our trek to the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridges.

With the help of a local guide, we will begin our trek through the forest and pass a number of bridges on the trail.

Upon reaching the beautiful Double Decker Living Root Bridges, we will spend some time exploring around and admiring this marvelous natural wonder.

After spending enough time at the bridges we will have to hike up to 3000 steps to reach back to the base village.

By evening, you will reach Tyrna village and then board your transfer back to Cherrapunji.

Reach your hotel in Cherrapunji for an overnight stay.

After having your breakfast in the morning, board your transfer to Shnongpdeng.

Our first stop for the day will be Nohkalikai Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Meghalaya.

Spend some time admiring the cascading waterfalls and listen to the heartbreaking story behind the name of the waterfalls.

Further, you will head to the Mawlynnong Village - the cleanest village in Asia and explore around.

Later, reach Shnongpdeng for an overnight stay.

Wake up in the morning and have your breakfast.

You can then head out to indulge in some water activities in the Umgnot River.

Later, we will hit the roads for Shillong.

On the way, we will also explore one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Meghalaya - Krang Shuri in Jowai.

You can spend some time admiring the cascading falls or just sit and relax by the blue water pool below the falls.

Next, we will continue our road journey to Shillong and reach there by evening.

Check-in to the hotel in Shillong for an overnight stay.

Have your breakfast and the morning and get ready to board your transfers.

Before leaving for Guwahati, we will first visit the magnificent Laitlum Canyon.

This Canyon was featured in the famous “Rock On 2” movie and is a perfect sight of green rolling hills, and deep gorges backed with the dramatic sky.

We will soak in the stunning views of the canyon and then head to Guwahati.

Your tour concludes once you are dropped off at the Guwahati Airport/ Railway Station for your onward journey. (Your Flight should be after 4-5 pm)

Day 1: Arrival in Guwahati and Transfer to Shillong

Upon your arrival in Guwahati, you will immediately set out on a scenic drive to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, which takes about three hours. As you ascend into the hills, the bustling cityscape of Guwahati gives way to the lush, verdant landscapes of Meghalaya. Upon reaching Shillong, check into your hotel and take some time to freshen up.

In the afternoon, you can begin your exploration with a visit to Ward’s Lake, a charming artificial lake surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. This serene spot is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a boat ride. Following this, head over to Lady Hydari Park, which features a mini zoo and an extensive rose garden, offering a pleasant environment to relax and enjoy nature.

As evening falls, take a stroll through Police Bazaar, the main commercial hub of Shillong. Day 3: Shillong to Cherrapunji

In the morning, depart for Cherrapunji, known locally as Sohra, which is about a two-hour drive from Shillong. En route, stop at the Mawkdok Dympep Valley viewpoint to admire the sweeping views of the lush valley below.

Upon arriving in Cherrapunji, begin your exploration with a visit to the Seven Sisters Falls, a breathtaking series of seven segmented waterfalls that cascade down the limestone cliffs. Then, head to Nohkalikai Falls, the tallest plunge waterfall in India, which plunges over 1,100 feet into a deep, green pool. The sight and sound of the water crashing down are truly mesmerizing.

In the afternoon, explore the Mawsmai Cave, a limestone cave known for its fascinating formations and narrow passages. The cave is well-lit and offers a short but adventurous underground experience.

As evening approaches, check into your hotel in Cherrapunji, where you can relax and enjoy a hearty dinner before resting for the night.

Day 4: Cherrapunji – Living Root Bridges

Prepare for an adventurous day as you set out on a trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat. The trek, which takes about three to four hours one way, involves navigating a series of steps and crossing several smaller root bridges. The journey can be challenging, but the reward is worth it.

The Double Decker Living Root Bridge is an incredible example of bioengineering, where the roots of rubber trees have been trained over generations to form sturdy, natural bridges. Spend some time exploring the area, taking in the beauty of the lush forest and the unique bridge.

After soaking in the sights, begin your return trek to Cherrapunji. The trek back can be tiring, so take your time and rest as needed. Once back in Cherrapunji, enjoy a well-deserved rest at your hotel.

Day 5: Cherrapunji to Dawki and Mawlynnong

In the morning, depart for Dawki, a picturesque town near the India-Bangladesh border, which is about a three-hour drive from Cherrapunji. Here, you can enjoy a boat ride on the Umngot River, renowned for its crystal-clear waters that allow you to see the riverbed even from the boat.

After your boat ride, visit the India-Bangladesh border, where you can see the international boundary and the neighboring country’s landscape. Then, continue your journey to Mawlynnong, known as the cleanest village in Asia, which is about an hour’s drive from Dawki.

In Mawlynnong, explore the village and visit the Living Root Bridge nearby. The village is known for its cleanliness, community efforts, and eco-friendly practices. Enjoy the serene environment and interact with the friendly locals. Spend the night in a guesthouse or homestay, experiencing the warmth of Khasi hospitality.

Day 6: Mawlynnong to Jowai

Depart from Mawlynnong in the morning and head to Jowai, a town in the West Jaintia Hills district, which is about a three-hour drive away. Jowai is known for its scenic beauty and cultural heritage.

Upon arriving in Jowai, visit Krang Suri Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Meghalaya. The waterfall cascades into a clear blue pool, making it an ideal spot for swimming and picnicking. Spend some time here, enjoying the natural beauty and tranquility.

Day 7: Jowai to Guwahati via Shillong and Departure

We did a 10 day tour with my parents visiting Kaziranga, Tawang, Meghalaya in our trip. We booked this trip last minute (~week prior) and were immediately helped with scheduling tours of the Kaziranga park and major attractions. Custom Meghalaya Tour Plan Itinerary

The detailed itinerary from this 7-day Meghalaya trip plan is given below of one of our many north east India tour packages which are tweaked and curated as per the guests’ taste.

After a quick meet & greet at the Guwahati airport, you will start your journey from Guwahati to Shillong . Drive through the plains of Assam for a while, leaving the city of Guwahati behind. As you start ascending, notice how shops on the right side of the road say Meghalaya while those on your left say Assam. This continues for the next few kilometers when you finally take a right and cross over to Meghalaya, the abode of clouds.

Your first stop will be Umiam Lake to enjoy the beauty of this serene place under gorgeous skies. Spend some time here. You can choose to go for a boat ride here if you wish. Once done, resume your journey to Shillong and straight to your lovely Khasi homestay. Evening free to relax. Finish your day with an authentic Khasi dinner at your homestay .

Cherrapunjee is one of the most beautiful parts of Meghalaya . With many wonderful place s to see in Cherrapunjee and around, the drive from Shillong to Cherrapunjee will take almost the entire day, even though the distance is very small. Today’s journey is full of places to see. By the end of the day, you will have visited the following places:

• Elephant falls.
• Shillong Peak.
• Mawkdok Viewpoint.
• Wah Kaba Falls.
• Arwah Caves.
• Dainthlen Falls.[Time & weather permitting.]
• Nonkalikhai Falls.
• Mawsmai Caves/Arwah Caves.

For the night, check in to a wonderfully located resort off Cherrapunjee or at a very homely and simple homestay in Cherrapunjee.

Day 3 – Double-decker Living Root Bridge Trek 

Today is going to be one of the most exciting days of your 7-day Meghalaya Trip . You will be walking to the bio-engineering marvel also known as the living root bridge or jingkieng nongriat (double-decker living root bridge) . The trek to the double-decker living root bridge starts from a tiny village named Tyrna. You will be joined by your guide here, who will guide you through quaint villages, turquoise natural pools, and gorgeous vegetation.

At a brisk pace, it will take you more than an hour to reach the double-decker living root bridge. Once there, spend your time lazing around at the natural pool near the root bridge. Explore the area at your own place and then start your walk back. Remember, lunch in Nongriat will have to be either snacks and energy bars that you carry or simple noodles or local food available there.

Be back at your stay by evening.

Day 4 – Cherrapunjee to Mawlynnong via Dawki

Start at leisure today and start for Mawlynnong village, after breakfast. Famously known as Asia’s cleanest village , Mawlynnong is a quaint village tucked on a small hill overlooking the Bangladesh plains. But before we head there, we will take a detour towards the India – Bangladesh border at Dawki.

Here, you can experience boating on the transparent waters (not included) and have your lunch on a river island of the Umngkot River. From there, you will go visit the Tamabil border post before heading back to Mawlynnong village for the night.

Day 5 – Mawlynnong to Krangsuri to Jowai

Wake up early and take a walk around the beautiful village with its hundred-year-old Church to see how everyone, from kids to elders, strives to keep even the tiniest bit of trash off the streets and everywhere else other than the dustbins. Head back to your Khasi homestay to freshen up and check out.

Post breakfast, we will be visiting the single-decker living root bridge at the Riwai village. From there, start for Jowai but not before visiting the gorgeous Krangsuri waterfall and spend some time there. Evening free to relax or take a relaxed walk around your homestay.

**Availability at Jowai is very limited. In case Jowai is not doable, we will overnight at Shillong.

Day 6 – Jowai To Nartiang Monoliths To Laitlum To Shillong / Shillong – Laitlum – Police Bazar

Leave your bed early and go out for another walk around your homestay. Located outside Jowai town, the location is perfect an aimless walk is one of the best ways to enjoy the place. Then after breakfast, head to the Nartiang Monolith Park and witness the stone monoliths of the Jaintia people kept there.

Or, in case of staying in Shillong on Day 5, the day’s plan would cover Shillong, the Laitmum canyons, Police Bazar in the evening.

Even though the place is not very well-maintained, it has great significance for the region. The monoliths of Meghalaya are said to be one of the tallest in the world and were raised by the erstwhile Jaintia kings . If you are not a history buff, however, you might want to give this place a miss and head directly to the Laitlum canyons. It is a gorgeous place to sit and relax. Then, head to homestay in Shillong.

Evening free.

Day 7 – Shillong To Guwahati

On the last day of your trip, take it easy. Check out around 10 or so and then do some last-minute shopping from Shillong, if you haven’t already. On your way back to Guwahati, feel free to stop again at the Umiam Lake or at the Umiam Lake viewpoint before heading straight to the airport.

** Oct-end through April is generally considered dry season in the region so, the waterfalls are not at their best in this period. However, the Umngkot River is at its transparent best.

** You can also customize it to add camping by the Umngkot River off Dawki, instead of staying in Mawlynnong village. Riverside camping is not possible during the monsoon season.

**Please be informed that the homestays in Cherrapunjee & Mawlynnong are neat & clean but basic, given their geographic location. If you think are not flexible enough to stay in experimental homestays do let us know and we will plan your accommodations in Shillong.

**The stay at Jowai involves 15-20 minutes of walking from the drop-off point to reach. There will be people to help you with the luggage but the last bit of this beautiful stay is to be covered on foot.

• From the airport, our representative will take you to a pre-booked hotel in Assam to recover from jet lag.

Guwahati to Shillong (Meghalaya) via Umiam Lake

• Followed by this, check-out of the hotel and be ready to commence a 99 km drive to the beautiful hill station of Shillong in Meghalaya. The entire drive would take around 3-4 hours to complete.
• En route, the gorgeous lake of Umiam, also known as Barapani. Barapani is the largest artificial lake in Meghalaya. Whereas, Umiam is known for its picturesque surrounding which includes Sylvan Hills.
