How to Take a Day Trip to Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas

day trip to atlantis bahamas from miami

The Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island is an entire tropical world unto itself. This Bahamian resort boasts casinos, underwater shark walks, and frolicking dolphins. As one of the most famous hotels in the Bahamas , the Atlantis also boasts multiple hotel towers and specific resort sections to accommodate a wide variety of guests' every wish. But, you don’t need to be a guest at the resort to visit this mega-resort. In fact, millions of visitors to Nassau take a quick taxi or water-shuttle ride to experience the resort's casinos and restaurants. From information on the top attractions to details about how to get there (and which day pass to reserve), read on for your ultimate guide to day-tripping to Atlantis Paradise Island.

Attractions and Things to Do at Atlantis Paradise Island

There are 85 gaming tables, 21 restaurants, and 19 bars and lounges at Atlantis Paradise Island. However, while throwing down some cash on the craps tables or roulette wheel may satisfy some visitors, others—especially families—are drawn to the Atlantis' aquatic allure; specifically the resort's spectacular "lost world" themed water park, dolphin encounter program, beaches, and the underground mysteries of The Dig, a walk-through exploration of the Lost City of Atlantis. Day tickets for all of these activities can be purchased at Discover Atlantis Sales Centers located throughout the property.

Given the hordes of visitors to the Atlantis daily, it's not surprising that the resort limits access to some of these attractions—notably the Aquaventure pool and water park area—to preserve a premier experience for hotel guests. However, that does not mean that day-trippers can't visit the Atlantis attractions, including Aquaventure; you'll have to pay a bit for the privilege (and expect a significant markup on these prices if you buy through a cruise line).

  • Dolphin Cay at Atlantis: Day visitors can swim and play with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins at the state-of-the-art, 14-acre habitat.
  • Discover Atlantis Tour: This tour is best known to day-trippers, in part because it is sold as an excursion on cruise ships. Expert "Navigators" guide visitors through the ancient city streets of Atlantis during a visit to "The Dig," a faux-but-believable archaeological exploration of an 11,000-year-old lost continent. The attraction is full of interesting artifacts, along with great water effects and glimpses of exotic sea life, including piranha, moon jellyfish, venomous lionfish, and a resident manta ray. A Discover Atlantis Tour wristband allows visitors to explore The Dig and its exhibits as well as the Ruins, Predator, and Water’s Edge Lagoons—but not the waterpark.
  • Atlantis Beach Day: The Atlantis Beach Day program provides all-day access to the Atlantis resort's exclusive white sandy beaches, with lounge chairs and towels provided. It also includes access to marine habitats and lunch at an outside venue.
  • Atlantis Aquaventure Package : Day-trippers can purchase an Atlantis Aquaventure package that provides all-day access to pools, beaches, and Aquaventure, a 141-acre waterscape containing over 20 million gallons of water with water slides, and a mile-long river ride with high-intensity rapids and wave surges. The passes are only available to guests staying at partners of the Atlantis Resort. They can be purchased (on a restricted basis) at the Atlantis Adventures Desk at the clock tower in front of The Coral.

How to Get There

Paradise Island (formerly Hog Island) is a 685-acre island off the northern coast of Nassau, the capital of the island of New Providence. There is no public transport to take you to Paradise Island—the local bus system, the "jitney," will only take you as far as the ferry terminal, so your best bet is either to take a ferry or a taxi.

To access Paradise Island by water, hop aboard a 15-minute ferry ride from Nassau to Paradise Island. The ferry departs from Nassau Cruise Port from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and costs $3 for a one-way ticket. On your boat ride to Paradise Island, a guide will also give you a brief history lesson of the island and its many attractions. Once you've arrived on Paradise Island, it's a 10-minute walk from the ferry dock to Marina Village in Atlantis.

If you decide to rent a car, note that there is limited free parking available on Paradise Island (and limited spots are found near the public beach). The best alternative is to valet your vehicle at the cost of $16.75 per day. Whether you're driving or opting for a taxi, be prepared to pay the northbound one-way $1 bridge toll. In taxis, this will be on top of your metered fare—and the average cost for a one-way trip from Lynden Pindling International Airport to Paradise Island is about $35. Another alternative is to be dropped off along the coast of New Providence to walk across the bridge (an activity that is toll-free). Once you've arrived on the island, there's no need to rent a car, as visitors can easily walk the grounds and explore everything the hotel has to offer on foot.

Day passes are mandatory for all non-hotel guests at the Atlantis to experience Dolphin Cay, the waterpark, the marine habitat, and the beaches. The passes can be purchased (on a restricted basis) at the Atlantis Adventures desk, situated at the clock tower at The Coral. These passes have been known to sell out, so it's imperative to book online in advance. World Travel Holdings also sells day passes to Aquaventure, Atlantis Dolphin Cay, and the iconic British Colonial Hilton. These passes are marketed primarily to cruise visitors but can be an excellent add-on for anyone visiting Nassau.

  • The Aquaventure pass includes admission to Aquaventure and The Dig, lounge chairs, and towels.
  • Dolphin Cay experiences include a shallow-water interaction with dolphins.
  • The British Colonial Hilton pass includes all-day access to the resort's pristine private beach and pool, snorkeling and kayaking, lounge chairs and towels, and a food and beverage credit.

Tips for Visitors

  • There's more to Paradise Island than just the Atlantis, so be sure to explore the rest of the island. We suggest hiking to the Nassau lighthouse for gorgeous seaside views along the coast. Of all the waterpark attractions, the underwater shark walk is not to be missed—imagine a turquoise tunnel full of predators. (It's as scary and thrilling as it sounds).
  • There is no visitor information center in Paradise Island, so make sure to consult downtown the tourist information available for visitors in downtown Nassau.
  • If you're planning on staying for dinnertime, make a reservation in advance, as restaurants can become busy, especially in the colder months. Additionally, the resort will limit attractions during the peak busy season to preserve hotel guests' experience—a hindrance that won't be an issue for you if you're visiting during the off-season. If you're visiting in the off-season (summer and fall), expect fewer crowds—for the waterslides and the bars and restaurants, alike.
  • If you're taking the ferry to Paradise Island, remember to bring cash. Although exact change isn't necessary, it's helpful as you will be expected to tip your tour guides, who provide colorful commentary and historical insight into the past and present-day iterations of Nassau and Paradise Island.

Bahamas for vaccinated tourists

Bahamas will allow the arrival of vaccinated tourists from May 1st

April 26, 2021

Bahamas for vaccinated tourists from May 1st

Updated on the April 26th, 2021

With the idea of seeking stimuli to reactivate tourism in the Bahamas islands from next May 1st, tourists vaccinated with the 2 doses will be able to travel to the Bahamas without having to present a negative COVID 19 test result.

The Bahamas islands will allow all those people who have received the full doses of immunization, at least two weeks before traveling, to the country to enter the country. Negative PCR with up to 5 days of validity is required for the rest of the travelers.

Prime Minister Hubert Minnis announced at a press conference that: "All that will be medically required to enter the country will be the proof of vaccination and that two weeks have passed since the final dose." This measure wants to activate tourism as soon as possible, on which the Caribbean archipelago largely depends.

The prime minister indicated that anyone who has not been fully vaccinated must provide a negative PCR test taken within five days prior to arrival in the Bahamas. "This measure will greatly enhance our economy and will also help reduce the number of infections. When tourists are fully vaccinated, since they will have received all the doses, they will be able to participate in events in a closed environment where the mask would not be necessary".

This measure has been announced when several cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Crystal Cruises and Bahamas Paradise Cruise Lines) are going to start sailing in the Bahamas from June and July, this coming summer.

Warning in the United States. On the other hand, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) raised the warning level for the Bahamas this week to the highest level of health risk, the 4.

Fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk of contracting and spreading covid-19 variants, due to the current situation in the Bahamas, so all trips to the archipelago should be avoided," says the updated advice from the CDC. The United States recommends not traveling to 80% of the world's countries.

The Bahamas has reported 10,000 infections and 194 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, with a population of around 400,000 people. There are currently just over 500 active cases in the nation. Not everyone has been in favor of this decision, although many sectors of the Bahamas, dependent on tourism, want to reactivate their economy as soon as possible.

As of today, April 26th, 2021, less than 4% of the total population of the Bahamas has received the first dose of the vaccine.

Bahamas will allow the arrival of vaccinated tourists

Ferry to Bahamas relaunched

Ferry to Bahamas relaunched on Febraury 2021 from Port Lauderdale (Florida) with Balearia company

February 02, 2021

Balearia Caribbean will relaunch its ferry service from Florida to the Bahamas on Febraury 2021, departing from Fort Lauderdale port. The South Florida-based company runs ferry services from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini first and from Port Everglades to Freeport (Grand Bahama island).

The company announced last week that the Government of the Bahamas has approved the launch of the fast ferry service between Miami (Fort Lauderdale) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) in the Bahamas. His first departure to Freeport is scheduled for February 11, 2021.

Balearia will be offering initially one sailing service a week, with ferry on Thurdays. At the end of Febraury, another ferry service will be implemented on Sundays. If there is an increase in demand for passenger transport, the shipping company is prepared to increase the number of weekly departures in March and April.

At the same time, Balearia will reopen the ferry route between Florida to Bimini island starting on February 10th, 2021. This route will have, at the moment, a frequency of 3 departures a week, in both directions. The Jaume II ferry will be the ship that does both routes.

Balearia will retake its operations with a host of new health and safety protocols, including mandatory face masks, electronic boarding passes, enforced social distancing and temperature checks prior to boarding, and only 40% occupancy of the total capacity of its ferry.

Other sanitary measures imposed by Balearia are: plexiglass dividers have been placed in the common areas and between all the seats, the ship and the ferry terminals are subjected to a deep and extensive cleaning process before, during and after each crossing.

The company’s ships also undergo “deep and extensive sanitation” before, during and after each sailing, the company said. Balearia says it has been certified by Bureau Veritas with the Global Safe Site Covid-19 certificate, one of the first shipping companies to receive the designation. It should be noted that all travelers to The Bahamas must fill out an electronic travel form and have proof of a negative COVID-19 test that is no more than seven days old, among other requirements.

All passengers boarding from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Grand Bahama or Bimini (Bahamas) will have to show a negative PCR test for COVID-19 performed at least 5 days before the trip. Each passenger must also apply for a travel health visa.

NOTE: We recommend that all passengers verify all the necessary travel requirements at the time of their trip, both in and out of the countries they are going to visit, always before starting with the preparations and purchases of their ferry tickets.

To keep up to date and have all the information, safety and travel protocols in the Bahamas, you can visit the websites http://travel.gov.bs (Bahamas) and https://travel.state.gov (United States). The reopening of the shipping routes between Grand Bahama and the United States is expected to increase the number of visitors to Grand Bahama island and help recover the jobs lost due to Covid-19 and mitigate the economic effects of the pandemic.

The government of the Bahamas has announced that it will open its borders to the transport of passengers by ferrys of February 10, 2021 to Bimini island and on February 11, 2021 to Freeport Harbour (Gran Bahama island).

For that, Balearia Caribbean is preparing the safety and hygiene protocols (in its ships and passenger terminals) necessary to offer its customers safe transport, both for people and goods.

The ferry route to Freeport, Grand Bahama, will be opertate once a week (Thurdays) and, if possible, it will be two days a week in February. If passenger demand increases, and sanitary conditions allow it, the frequency on the ferry routes will be increased in March and April 2021.

When booking your trip to The Bahamas Islands, be sure to read, understand and follow these requirements, which are mandatory and required by the government of The Bahamas

As a GENERAL RULE, all travelers who want to visit the Bahamas should apply for a Bahamas Health Travel Visa. This visa can be obtained through the website travel.gov.bs . Also children and babies (regardless of their age) will need their own health visa (although they are not required to take the Covid test due to their age).

VACCINATED PASSENGERS

People who are fully vaccinated (2 doses or 1 dose depending on the vaccine) and who have waited as least the 14 days immunity period will be able to travel to The Bahamas without a negative COVID-19 test result.

Vaccinated passengers must provide, for their entry into the country, proof of vaccination (original card and copy of vaccination card) in addition to the approved Travel Health Visa printed on the day of travel. As we have discussed previously, this is a mandatory requirement of the Bahamian government. If you do not provide the required travel documents, boarding the ferry can be denied by the health authorities.

In case of traveling to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island on a Sunday, you must bring 2 printed copies of the Travel Health Visa and Covid vaccination card plus the original.

UNVACCINATED PASSENGERS

All unvaccinated passengers over 10 years of age must submit a negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test performed no more than 5 days prior to their travel date. (This requirement is not mandatory for children under 10 years old).

At the time of boarding in Fort Lauderdale (Florida) and entering the country, passengers must present printed copies of the negative result of COVID 19 and of the Travel Health approved on the day of the trip. The health authorities of the Bahamas Islands are requesting these two printed reports, both the Travel Health Visa and the result of the COVID-19 RT-PCR test with a negative result. If the passenger does not provide these documents, the health authorities can deny the boarding or entry into the country.

BALEARIA CARIBBEAN'S COVID MEASURES

In order to maximize the safety and tranquility of the passengers on board, and due to the current situation, Balearia Caribbean has taken the following measures against Covid 19:

Before boarding, a member of the Balearia Caribbean staff takes the body temperature of all passengers who are going to make the trip. If the reading of this temperature is higher than 100º Fahrenheit or 37.7º Celsius, the passenger will be denied boarding on the ferry.

While in the ferry terminals and on board the boats throughout the navigation, the use of a mask or face cover is always mandatory for all passengers.

With the safety and hygiene of passengers in mind, Balearia Caribbean has installed additional disinfectant dispensers in all its terminals and on board the ship.

Plexiglass dividers and informational signs have also been placed in different areas throughout the vessel to promote safe distances between passengers and the crew members.

You can contact Balearia Caribbean directly by email ([email protected] or [email protected]) or by phone (866) 699-6988 to resolve any questions you may have.

Florida Bahamas ferry reviews

" A coffee or breakfast would be appreciated before boarding the ferry. The Fort Lauderdale terminal is not bad although I miss more offer while waiting for the ship to depart.

The bathrooms in the terminal are small. The ferry ride to Freeport was quick and comfortable"

Daniel

"The ferry was fine and seems well organized. We pay for premium seats because it has priority boarding and food and soft drinks included on board. Highly recommended. The trip is short, barely two hours, and we did not have time to cool down despite the fact that the air conditioning was very strong.

As soon as we got to Freeport, we went by bus to a beautiful beach. The people of the place are friendly and if you only go for a day it is better that you bring food and drink since there the prices are expensive and there is not much option.

A round trip on the same day is enough time."

Emily

" Enchanting with the trip. Very comfortable premium seats. The crew members are very friendly. My experience aboard the Balearia Caribbean ship is highly recommended. We leave from Port Everglades at the scheduled time.

The premium service has been good as it allows you to charge the phone on the seat. You can stretch your legs while resting. We will be back."

Orenes

" My experience traveling by ferry with Balearia Caribbean has not been the best. I bought the ferry tickets to travel to Bahamas on February 12 and my trip was one way. The boarding process is very slow and there is a lack of communication between the company and customers.

The Balearia Caribbean confirmation system gave my boyfriend Javier and I different terminals to board. While my boyfriend was told to go to terminal 21, I received a notice to show up at terminal 19. All this, as you can imagine, is very confusing and we lost a lot of time to find the correct terminal."

The Bahamas are a collection of more than 700 islands, well known for their year-round tropical weather, fish- and shellfish-centric cuisine, and breathtakingly stunning, untouched virgin beaches. A day trip from Miami to this tropical island is nothing but heavenly.

The Bahamas is a fascinating site because of its deep historical and cultural heritage: The distinctive art, music, and cuisine the islands’ vibrant past has produced are all around the enthusiastic tourists.

Interesting wildlife can be found on land, in the ocean, and on coral reefs, showcasing the archipelago’s robust biodiversity. Furthermore, guests won’t be bored with their experience thanks to activities like island hopping and a selection of exhilarating water sports. The Bahamas, in essence, have everything.

The peak season for tourism starts in mid-December and ends in mid-April in The Bahamas, and that is often considered the best time to go, as more activities are happening in the islands during this time.

To catch the Bimini boat, keep in mind that you must arrive at the passenger terminal three hours prior to the planned boarding time. One hour before the ferry’s scheduled departure, boarding is closed. After that point, Balearia Caribbean won’t permit you to board the cruise. In order to catch the ferry to the Bahamas, we urge you to be at Port Everglades well in advance.

Ferry or Crusie day trip or Air Tour- How to go from Miami To Bahama?

Four ways to get to the Bahamas from South Florida for a day trip.

  • Ferry from Fort Lauderdale or Miami to the Bahamas
  • Private Contract Boat
  • Private Charter Plane
  • International Flight

FERRY- The least expensive way to travel to the Bahamas for a day from Florida is by ferry from Miami. The ferry tickets will cost you about $198- $340 plus VAT per person to visit Grand Bahama or Bimini Island (round trip).

Depending on what time of year you want to visit, different seasons have different prices from Miami (Fort Lauderdale).

CRUISE- Cruise ships have bars, entertainment, and swimming pools if you take a cruise day trip. Your vacation starts the moment you board a flight to the Bahamas from Miami. The ship typically features a small cafeteria but no swimming pool.

Cruises make for a soothing visit to nearby islands. Ferries to Freeport from Miami need as little as 2.5 hours. That will leave you with around six hours to enjoy the beaches, jungles, restaurants, shops, and Grand Bahamas casinos, a cheaper way to go on a day trip to Bahama. On the other hand, air tours are better if you want to see more than one island.

A benefit to this travel mode is that many cruises offer excellent onboard services and even luxury. Your 1-day cruise to Miami Bahamas Rates starts at $69.98 plus tax per person.

You can also book 2, 3, or 4-night cruises with a room onboard the cruise ship for as low as USD 199, making visiting the Bahamas from South Florida a cheap weekend trip.

AIR TOUR- Here is a quicker way to begin your day excursion to the Bahamas. Bahamas Air Tours offers one-day trips from Miami that, because of the reduced travel time, enable island hopping once you get to your destination. The three cays—Green Turtle Cay, Manjack Cay, and No Name Cay—can all be visited on one terrific day, thanks to the package bargains! Other alternatives this tour operator offers include snorkelling in the James Bond Thunderball Grotto, going to sand bars, and seeing stunning wildlife—all of which can be done as a one-day trip from Miami. On request, small groups can take private charter flights.

The prices for the tours range from around 500 to 1,000 dollars. The high season is considered to be January, November and December. The cheapest month to fly to The Bahamas is August. Book at least 3 weeks before departure in order to get a below-average price.

Cruises on ferries are typically less expensive. You can frequently travel from Miami to Freeport, Grand Bahama, for about $100 roundtrip . For instance, one-day journeys to and from Freeport start at about $160 on Viator. The Balearia Caribbean ferry typically costs around $99 each way from Miami to Freeport and back. Some cruises, particularly the two-day ones, frequently include dinner as part of the fee. However, be sure to confirm that you are responsible for paying for your own meals and lodging (you usually do). A 2-day trip to the Bahamas will cost $398 + taxes (including ferry and hotel package), and a 3-day trip to the Bahamas will cost you $698 + taxes (including ferry and hotel package).

The prices for the air tours range from around 500 to 1,000 dollars. The high season is considered to be January, November and December. The cheapest month to fly to The Bahamas is August. Book at least 3 weeks before departure in order to get a below-average price.

Big Major Cay welcomes you into the water with a herd of local Exuma pigs and piglets, which is frequently recognized as one of the best things to do on a day trip from Miami to the Bahamas.

There are several stories regarding how these pigs arrived on the island (from being left behind by sailors to the relocation of pig farms on Staniel Cay). Their origin is still up for debate. Regardless, we are simply happy that these adorable animals are now present to support the local economy by bringing in millions of tourists every year.

Thunderball Grotto Of 007

Do you recall the thrilling underwater action sequence from the 1965 James Bond film Thunderball? Now you can take a day excursion from Miami to the Bahamas and visit the shooting location.

After the popular film, Thunderball Grotto is a strange underwater cave network that will test any adrenaline seeker. Daredevils can gently scale the cave’s ceiling and experience the thrill of jumping in.

Snorkelling offers a more subdued approach for people who aren’t as daring.

Island hopping

Island Hopping Bahama

Everything will depend on how active you and your group feel and how much you want to see before booking a Miami to Bahamas day trip. You don’t essentially have to choose one island to head to.

If you’re opting for a one-day Bahamas ferry trip from Miami, Freeport is a good option on Grand Bahamas Island for a five- to six-hour experience on this general island. If you wish to see the Out Islands, a ferry to Bimini can take only two hours. Air tours can allow you to see some islands in one short day trip.

The fee for the in-Grand Bahamas Island travel is comprised of the price. Two-day boat cruises with an overnight stay may also allow more time for you to make small boat trips to nearby islands.

Things To Keep In Mind

Americans travelling to the Bahamas must have a passport that is still valid at least six months after the date of their return. It’s advisable to include documentation of your return trip.

Remember to allow plenty of time, just as you would for any other flight, to pass through security and customs if you travel by air.

However, this information should be made apparent if you’re making an air charter tour reservation. The Bahamian dollar (BSD) is the official currency of the Bahamas. However, it is also accepted elsewhere on the islands as a form of payment (their values are equal).

English is the official language of the Bahamas. Visitors will hear and be able to comfortably speak in English, in addition to a variety of vibrant local dialects.

Overall, getting to the Bahamas from Florida is fairly simple, which is another reason why these vacations are growing in popularity.

To avoid disappointment, make sure to reserve your day excursion from Miami to the Bahamas early. Once you’ve done that, everything else should go swimmingly (or effortlessly).

What paperwork will you need for a day trip to the Bahamas ?

Conflicting to popular belief, US Residents, US Citizens, and visitors need a passport to go to the Bahamas, even for a day trip. Visitors need a valid ticket. State IDs and birth certificates are not applicable.

Any ferry that tells you otherwise does not plan on docking at the Bahamas and letting you off the boat.

You must provide the following information at the time of booking: hotel location, traveller names, nationalities, gender, passport numbers, dates of birth, and expiration date of passports.

Your reservation cannot be guaranteed without these details.

Day Trip From Miami To The Bahamas

Why you should not fly to the Bahamas from Florida , United States

Ferries are less preventive about the baggage fees while also giving you a great ocean view during your Bahamas cruise. Your vacation starts as soon as you’re on the ferry.

Cheap day trips by plane are not possible. A private plane trip for a one-day trip to the Bahamas averages $700 per passenger for a 6-hour day in Bimini. Flights to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale Airport, Miami International Airport, or Palm Beach International Airport average $250 round trip in the slow season.

Taking a ferry to the Bahamas takes an average of 2.5-3 hours , which is about how early you would need to arrive at an airport for an international flight.

Bahamas Ferry From Florida

Miami Ferry to the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale Ferry to the Bahamas

Two main ferries offer day and multi-night trips from Miami to the Bahamas. Fort Lauderdale that are credible and trusted by tourists and Floridians alike. Departing from Miami is FRS Caribbean, which only goes to Bimini, the Bahamas, the perfect setting for a day trip. (price may vary)

The most popular service offering one-day trips to Freeport is Balearia Caribbean, located on Grand Bahama Island . This can get you from Fort Lauderdale (a 35-minute drive from Miami) to Grand Bahama in three hours and 20 minutes.

Many boats claim to charge as little as USD 69 for round-trip day tickets to the Bahamas. When we examined these companies, they were not transparent about the vessel and had little to no public reviews, making us feel safe.

Instead, we opted to spend more on a larger container with a public safety record and knowledge about immigration and customs. We had thousands of customer reviews on Tripadvisor, Groupon, and Google.

FRS Caribbean

  • Departs: Port of Miami, Florida 9 AM and Departs Bimini at 6:30 PM.
  • Destination: Port of Bimini, Bahamas.
  • When: every day except Tuesdays.
  • Check their website for accessibility.
  • Cost: $69.95 for taxes, Hilton Resort Fee ($10) for Day Trips, and $250-$350 round-trips for extended stays (3-10 nights), not including hotel.

Balearia Express

  • Departs: Port of Fort Lauderdale.
  • Destination: Grand Bahama Island.
  • When: Every Day except Tuesdays.
  • Cost: $119 Day Trip or $149 Multi-Day.

This information should be clear when booking an air charter tour. The national language of the Bahamas is English. Other than an array of colourful local vernaculars, English is what visitors will hear spoken and will securely communicate in.

Travel to the Bahamas from the Florida United States is very up-front. Another reason why these trips are becoming so popular. Do make sure to book your Miami to Bahamas day trip in advance to avoid disappointment. Once you have, it should be plain sailing from there.

How to Take a day trip from Miami to the Bahamas

Girl on Grand Bahama Island. Sitting on chair on sand, in front of blue sea.

Believe it or not, you can take a day trip from Miami to the Bahamas ! There are two ways to do it: by boat or by plane. Both options offer short transportation times and affordable transit costs, making a day trip to the Bahamas an excellent choice for those on a tight schedule or budget. Personally, I prefer taking the Balearia Bahamas Express ferry to visit Grand Bahama Island, and I’ll explain why in a bit.

Now, you might be wondering why I would suggest a day trip instead of a longer stay in the Bahamas. Well, it really comes down to time and budget constraints. For some travelers, a day trip is a great way to experience the islands without breaking the bank. You won’t have to worry about expenses like checked baggage or hotel accommodations. So, if you’re looking for a cost-effective way to explore the Bahamas, a day trip might just be the perfect solution for you.

Option 1: Day Trip from Miami to the Bahamas by Boat

using the Miami ferry to go on a day trip from Miami to the Bahamas

Taking a day trip from Miami to the Bahamas is an experience you won’t forget, and in my opinion, the best way to do it is by boat. I recommend the Balearia Bahamas Express. It’s the best ferry to take from Miami to the Bahamas; it offers affordable tickets, quick and comfortable transportation, and frequent departures. I took the Balearia Ferry from Miami to the Bahamas for a day-trip myself, and I wanted to share some helpful information about the experience.

  • What islands can I visit if I go to the Bahamas by boat? You can access every island in the Bahamas via boat. However, if you’re looking to go on a day-trip, then the two most accessible islands by boat in the Bahamas are Grand Bahama Island and Bimini Island.
  • How long is the trip to Grand Bahama Island from Miami by boat? Grand Bahama Island is about 197 miles off the coast of Miami, and it takes about 3 hours each way to get there by boat.
  • How long is the trip to Bimini Island from Miami by boat?: Bimini is 57 miles from Miami by ferry, and, takes about 2 hours each way to get there.
  • How frequent are the departures to/from Miami and Grand Bahama Island on the Balearia Express? Departure times may vary, but when I went, the boats departed and arrived every 2 hours. I was able to leave Miami at 7 AM and then take a boat from the Bahamas back to Miami at 7 PM.
  • Is the Balearia Express comfortable? Yes, the Balearia Express is extremely comfortable. You can walk around, stretch your feet, eat in a cafe, and stand on the boat deck and take in the views.
  • What are the benefits of taking a boat to Miami instead of flying there? The boat ride is a better experience than flying. On the boat, you’re able to look at the ocean while transporting there, eat at the cafe, stretch around and walk.
  • How much does it cost to take the Balearia Express to Miami? Ticket costs vary based on date, time, and season, but when I went, I paid $90 total for a round-trip ticket.

Option 2: Day Trip to From Miami to the Bahamas by Plane

Miami to the Bahamas by Plane

Which airport should I fly from in Miami to get to the Bahamas? FLL and MIA are both great options, but I recommend choosing the one closest to your accommodation to save on transportation time.

Which islands can I fly to in the Bahamas from Miami? The most popular islands to visit for a day-trip are Freeport and Nassau.

What is the average flight time from Miami to the Bahamas? It varies based on your destination, but usually ranges from 30 minutes to one hour each way.

What are the advantages of flying to the Bahamas from Miami instead of taking a boat? Flight times are short and you can access different islands that are too far to reach by boat for a day-trip.

What are the disadvantages of flying to the Bahamas from Miami instead of taking a boat? Flights can be more expensive, and you’ll need to arrive at the airport early to go through security.

How can I find cheap flights from Miami to the Bahamas? Skyscanner.com is my go-to tool for finding affordable flights. Tuesdays are a good day to check for deals since airlines often reset their prices on this day. Flying on off-peak travel days like Tuesdays and Thursdays can also save you money.

Suggested Activities to do on Grand Bahama Island

Girl in the blue sea on Grand Bahama Island

When it comes to Grand Bahama Island, there are countless activities to choose from. Even if you only have a day to explore the island, you can still make the most of your trip by picking 1-2 must-see sites. Here are some of my top recommendations for activities on Grand Bahama Island:

  • Spend some time at the beach : If you do nothing but relax on the beach at Grand Bahama Island, then you’ve had a successful trip. This could very well be the only activity that you participate in during your day trip to the Bahamas, and that would be a day well spent. There are several beaches to choose from on the Island, but some of the highest-rated beaches are Gold Rock Beach ,  Taino Beach ,   and   Fortune Beach . If a beach is next to a resort, then you can pay the resort a small fee for a “day pass” in order to use their facilities (pool, etc.) and sit on the beachfront.
  • Lucaya Marketplace : Located in  Port Lucaya , The Lucaya Marketplace is a great place to visit in order to experience the culture of Grand Bahama Island. The marketplace features rows of shops that sell local hand-made goods and foods. There are a few great restaurants located near the marketplace that are worth checking out, too.
  • Lucayan National Park : Lucayan National Park is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Grand Bahama Island. A few scenes from Jurassic Park filmed in the park. Visitors can snorkel along the underwater cave system or simply walk around and enjoy.
  • Garden of the Groves : This is a beautiful garden on the island. Here, you can view diverse wildlife and have lunch in the middle of the landscape.
  • Swim with dolphins, Flamingos & pigs!: Grand Bahama Island offers opportunities to experience the Caribbean with lots of wildlife; including, dolphins, flamingos, and pigs. The pig swim is perhaps the most unique, ad what you might see several Instagram pictures of when researching the island.

Suggested Activities to do on Bimini Island

Another island to consider visiting on a day trip from Miami to the Bahamas is Bimini. It’s a bit closer than Grand Bahama Island and has plenty to offer visitors in terms of culture, history, and natural beauty. Here are some of the best things to do on a day trip to Bimini Island:

  • Visit Sapona : A concrete ship constructed by Henry Ford during World War I, currently rests as an upright wreck in 14 feet of water.
  • Explore the Bimini Shark Lab : This research facility is dedicated to studying the behavior and biology of sharks. You can take a tour and learn about the different species of sharks that inhabit the waters around Bimini.
  • Checkout the Dolphin House Museum : a unique and fascinating attraction created by local artist and historian, Ashley Saunders.
  • Go Scuba Diving: Bimini, Bahamas offers divers the opportunity to explore vibrant coral reefs, encounter diverse marine life, and discover fascinating underwater wrecks. There are many reefs to check out on Bimini, including the famous Rainbow Reef .
  • Spend the Day at Radio Beach :  a stunning, crescent-shaped beach with crystal-clear waters and soft white sand that offers visitors the perfect spot to relax and soak up the tropical sun.

Miami is such a fun city and one of the best party cities in the USA , but it’s also worth exploring the nearby day trips. One of the coolest things I’ve done is to go on a day trip to the Bahamas, and I was amazed at how accessible it was from the United States. It was surreal to wake up in one country, spend the day in another, and be back in the USA by nightfall.

If you’re planning a day trip to the Bahamas from Miami, I highly recommend taking the ferry to get the full experience, just as I did. If you have any questions, comments, or additional suggestions for readers, please feel free to drop them in the comments below.

I had no idea it was so close!

i didn’t either, until I went!! And I lived in Florida for years!! haha.

Just curious do I need my passport for a day trip to the Bahamas?

I recommend taking your passport with you as they did check them for us (and we went through immigration) when we came back to the USA from the boat. I suggest viewing the embassy page for your country to see what the up to date rules are, though as they do change frequently.

' src=

That’s awesome! I would love to go to Bimini! The water looks incredible!

' src=

do you need a pass port for this

They did check our passports when we returned to the USA from the Bahamas; so yes I do recommend bringing your passport!

If we do not have one that means we can’t go?

I suggest checking with the embassy or the ferry company that you plan on taking. However, per the Balearia website you do need a passport. They state: “*Note that Birth Certificates, Photo I. D, and naturalization documents ( Naturalization certificate) will no longer be accepted* Only PASSPORTS will be accepted for international travel. This applies to our day trip and overnight packages.”

I flew with Bahamas Island Travel and did a Day Trip. They flew us into Staniel Cay and we played with Pigs, swam with sharks, went snorkeling where James Bond was and on a sunken airplane, and did a bunch more stops! Instead of spending hours on a boat, they flew us on a private jet for a great price! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! check them out! BAHAMAS ISLAND TRAVEL DAY TRIP!

That sounds like an awesome time! I’m glad you had that experience and I will look into them! :)

Do you have the link of the ferry website? https://www.baleariacaribbean.com/en/baleariacaribbean-agencies-microsite?redirect-confirm-caribbean=true I’m checking this one and theres only an option a day to go (9 am) and only one for return (6pm) Also they charge $88.00 just in taxes (the price of 1 ticket). I’m wondering how did you get $90 total for a round-trip ticket, for me it’s $229 total! Thank you!

Hi Ana! The cost of the tickets vary depending on when you leave; many factors such as: the season you go (busy or not), day of the week, or time of the ferry impact the ticket cost. Not sure when you are planning on going but it would be considered high season (and more expensive) for this right now as it’s summertime and a peak travel month.

Enjoy an exhilarating 55 minute ride to the dreamy Exuma Cays some 38 nautical miles away from Nassau on board one of Powerboat Adventures' three custom built 1000hp offshore powerboats.

Your thrilling ride through crystal clear Bahamian waters takes you to your first stop on Allan's Cay, where you will be able to view and feed the protected Allan's Cay Rock Iguana.

Next you will be zipped away on Powerboat Adventures' Trademark Miami Vice run around a few of the cays to your base at Ship Channel Cay.

All of this excitement is sure to leave you hungry and thirsty, not to worry your on island chef has prepared you a delicious lunch of freshly filleted Nassau grouper or steak, along with fruit platters, cheese platters, fresh salads, baked potatoes, french bread, and other snacks. You will certainly need a drink or two to wash it all down with. Powerboat Adventures includes an open bar featuring beer, wine, sodas and various alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages.

Don't just think you and the crew of Powerboat Adventures are the only ones who get hungry around lunch time...

Meet the stringrays... a friendly bunch of graceful creatures patiently waiting to enjoy a few morsels of food from your table. Watch carefully as the guide shows you the correct way to feed and interact with your new neighbours. These are not the only ocean dwelling neighbours waiting for a free lunch. Beware... as lunch time can also mean the arrival of the sharks! Please leave the feeding of the sharks to the "expendable" guide.

These are not the only ocean dwelling neighbours waiting for a free lunch. Beware... as lunch time can also mean the arrival of the sharks! Please leave the feeding of the sharks to the "expendable" guide.

Prefer something a little less exciting? How about a refreshing swim in the clear gorgeous waters around Ship Channel Cay or just lounge on the beach with a cool drink.

Meet the piggies

If you've visited the Bahamas before, then you may already know that our national dish is Conch Salad - a mix of the freshest conch, peppers, onion and lime, but you may never have seen it made from the basic ingredients. Watch and learn as our crew show you how we prepare the perfect fresh conch salad. From opening the conch shell to the technique of skinning and dicing the conch meat, ending in a delicious sample for everyone. Informative, fun and very tasty!

Not enough? Take part on the guided tour of Ship Channel Cay. Learn a little about bush medicine and the flora of this remote island. A few more surprises are likely along the way. Good mobility is asset when exploring the island.

Sadly, the time will soon come to head back to the busy bustle of Nassau.

Please take your swimsuit, towel, sun protection and something warm for the return trip, as it can get cool late in the afternoon on the ocean.

If you wish to purchase a video film of your trip, please take cash or credit card for payment, and order this on the day of your trip.

ALL-INCLUSIVE RESORTS

Six ways to get from miami to nassau, the bahamas.

Nassau, the capital of The Bahamas, is located on New Providence Island and a top choice for visitors who are looking for a dream getaway to the Caribbean. Nassau is one of those international island destinations you can easily get to from U.S. cities like Miami, and as such, it is one of those places that simply must be checked off any wanderlust hot list.

There are lots of incredible things to do in Nassau including its gorgeous white sand beaches, taking boat trips to secluded islands and cays, and even dancing along with a Bahamian Junkanoo band depending on the time of your visit. To make things easier, Nassau is home to several luxurious resorts.

Looking for a long weekend getaway filled with unlimited free cocktails and excellent food ? Check out Sandals stunning all-inclusive resort in Nassau: Sandals Royal Bahamian .

You can get to The Bahamas from Miami via plane, cruise, boat charter, and even by ferry through the island of Bimini which is the closest point in The Bahamas to the U.S. In this post, we’ll share the deets on how to get there in the fastest or most leisurely time frame possible.

Note that for most options, you’ll need to be in possession of a passport to enter The Bahamas. Find more information here .

A dream getaway just an hour away

The best part of any vacation is getting there. You hardly need to be a seasoned traveler to share these sentiments, but it's true; the sooner you can get to your vacation destination, the sooner you’ll get to enjoy yourself.

Traveling to Nassau from Miami proves this point flawlessly. New Providence island in The Bahamas is just 180 miles off the southern coast of Florida , and travellers can get there easily with many direct flights available. In fact, if you plan on going to The Bahamas from Miami, you’ll be able to get there in as little as one hour , which means a couple hours after take-off, you can find yourself sprawled out on a white sand beach.

The list of airlines that fly this superbly convenient route from Miami to Nassau include Bahamasair, American Airlines, Delta, and JetBlue Airways . There are also numerous cruises with stops at the always bustling Bahamian cruise ports.

Get there by plane: flights from Miami to Nassau

Commercial flights.

Bahamas Commercial Flight Miami

As it takes just about an hour to get to The Bahamas from Miami by commercial flight, this makes Nassau the ideal destination for both short and longer stays. The short distance between these two cities means they’re close enough to allow for last-minute trip bookings, and also conveniently near enough to home just in case you need to return at a moment’s notice.

Price wise, you can expect to spend between $200 - $300 on airfare for non-stop round-trip flight tickets from Miami to Nassau. Prices vary depending on when you book; you can choose to fly during the low, shoulder, or peak seasons , all of which have their own benefits. Prices also vary depending on the airline.

Good to know: From Miami International Airport, you will depart from terminal H, G, or S to get to The Bahamas depending on which airline you choose.

Private jet

Bahamas Travel Private Jet

Want to get to The Bahamas in style? Zip on over via private jet for a truly luxurious experience. Going via private jet is the perfect way to avoid long airport wait times , and even if you don’t have the luxury of your own jet, you can charter one. This is a great option especially if you’re going to The Bahamas to celebrate a special occasion.

With a party of 5, you can expect to spend around $4,500 and upwards for a private jet. The price varies depending on the number of people you want to bring along and the type of aircraft. With a private jet you’ll be able to get to The Bahamas in about one hour, much like on a commercial flight, just with added perks and less waiting.

Get there by boat: from Miami To Nassau

Bahamas Ferry Port

There aren’t any ferries that will take you directly from Miami to Nassau , but there are ways to take a ferry trip to get to this Caribbean capital avoiding having to go on an international flight. To do so you’ll need to go there by way of Bimini, which is the closest island of The Bahamas to Miami (Bimini is 53 miles off the coast of Florida). It’ll take about 2 hours to get from Miami to Bimini and ferry tickets usually cost around $100 per person.

From Bimini, you’ll be able to make your way to Nassau via plane. It takes about 45 minutes (nonstop) to get to Nassau from Bimini by plane.

Sailboat or yacht

Bahamas Islands Yacht

Want to sail smoothly from Miami and right on into your glamorous Bahamas vacation? That’s totally a possibility if you own a personal sailboat or yacht or at least have access to one.

This trip is usually quick and easy, and especially scenic as you near the island chain of The Bahamas. One way, it takes about 8 - 10 hours to get to The Bahamas by yacht, while on a sailboat this journey can take up to 3 days . Deciding which to go for depends on how much time you have at your disposal, what kind of trip you’re looking to have, and the cost.

If you don’t own your own yacht, you can charter one for the trip for around $5,000 for the day . The cost will depend on the type of boat you will be travelling in and the amenities you want included. The best part about going to The Bahamas by boat from Miami is that it is easier to cross the gulf stream from this point, which makes for a smoother voyage. Sailors and yachters know this well, so depending on when you go, you’re likely to find many other people taking the trip as well.

Insider tip: When you get to Nassau you can dock your boat (40’ to 500’) in the Bay Street Marina for about $4/ft.

Cruise ship

Bahamas Nassau Cruise Ships

A Caribbean cruise is worth experiencing at least once. Cruising to The Bahamas, even more so as this is quite the popular destination for the cruise crowd. Cruise travellers love how easy it is to book a cruise from Miami to Nassau, and how simple it often is to schedule tours while in The Bahamas to amazing beaches, and even to some of the ‘Out Islands’ of The Bahamas like Eleuthera, Cat Island, Andros, and others.

Near the cruise ports in The Bahamas, you can easily find places to eat, shop, and generally have some fun before the ship sets off to another location. There are a number of cruises that leave from Miami and make stops in Nassau, so it won’t be difficult to find the right one for you.

If you take a cruise to Nassau, you’ll have options like 3 to 6-night trips for about $115 per person / per night from various cruise lines, as a starting point.

Nassau is usually a one-day stop for cruises and some of the other stops in The Bahamas can include Freeport, Coco Cay, Half Moon Cay, and Grand Turk. Stops on your cruise depend on the length of the cruise and the trip you select, so definitely look into the finer details before booking.

When in Nassau…

What to do when on a shorter trip to nassau.

Staying in Nassau for a daytrip, or the (long) weekend? Make sure to spend a good amount of time on one of its amazing beaches and book a snorkeling / boat tour.

Picture: Luxury resort Sandals Royal Bahamian on Cable beach, the Bahamas.

Junkanoo Beach is always a party and located near the cruise port. If you’re looking for a bit more peace and quiet, Love Beach out in the west of the island is the most popular beach among locals. While at Love Beach, make sure to have a drink at Nirvana beach bar! Another pretty beach to avoid the crowd is Jaws Beach, which is located further out to the west, near the largest underwater statue in the world .

Cable Beach and Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island are popular in their own rights, these are some of the larger beaches near Nassau and this is where you’ll find the most popular resorts on the island.

Also read: The 12 best beaches in Nassau .

Great places for lunch include Señor Frogs and the Pirate Republic brewery near the cruise port. This is also the best area to do some shopping.

Bringing the kids? Make sure to plan a visit to the Pirate Museum and get a day pass at one of the water parks .

Picture: Explore the island’s incredible beauty on a thrilling off-road adventure .

A great way to explore Nassau’s highlights within a day is to go on a Jeep sightseeing tour or culinary walking tour .

End the night at Aura, Bond or the Skybar . Philosophy Smokehouse is a fantastic place to enjoy a beer and some live music on Thursday nights.

What to do when on a longer trip to Nassau

If you’re staying a bit longer, you’ll have the time to truly enjoy all that Nassau has to offer without having to rush from one attraction to another.

Picture: The pigs of Big Major Cay can be seen frolicking in the water or snorting away happily on the sand, basking in the attention of the visitors nearby.

Besides visiting all points of interest mentioned above, make sure to visit Fort Charlotte, John Watling’s rum distillery , the Rum cake factory and Graycliff chocolatier (and make sure to taste some wine across the street).

Looking for lunch places that are worth a visit, but are located further out the city center? Try out Wild Thyme (intimate garden setting), Latitudes (looking out over the water and Paradise Island), The Ocean Club (looking out over Cabbage Beach) and the Pink Octopus (restaurant and beach club out in the east). Enjoy a cocktail with a stunning oceanfront view at Compass Point .

The more time you spend on the turquoise waters of The Bahamas, the better your experience: book day trips to Rose Island, Blue Lagoon Island and perhaps even the swimming pigs of Exuma . Make sure to apply enough sunblock!

If you love scuba diving on your vacation, Nassau is the place to be! Sandals Royal Bahamian offers free scuba diving trips (max. two tanks a day) for all PADI® certified guests. This includes equipment and professional dive staff. Not certified yet? Get certified at an additional cost on the resort and dive the rest of your vacation for free.

Where to stay

Convenience matters when selecting island accommodation, and the key to making the right choice is selecting somewhere on the beach. There’s no Uber in Nassau and getting a cab can be quite expensive and difficult, unless you order one from the convenience of your hotel or resort . When in The Bahamas, ideally, you’ll be able to walk to the beach from your room.

Picture: Experience a new level of luxury at Nassau's most elegant all-inclusive resort: Sandals Royal Bahamian .

You might have noticed that in the previous section we referred to some of the great lunch spots in and around Nassau, but didn’t go into depth when it comes to restaurants that are great for dinner. That’s because the best restaurants in Nassau are part of the resorts and hotels.

Therefore, it’s not only important to find great accommodation on the beach, but also find a place with plenty of restaurants to choose from. Take note that The Bahamas is one of the most expensive countries in the world . Expect to pay 10 USD for a beer and 18 USD for a cocktail at a hotel / resort that is NOT all-inclusive. This is why many visitors choose to stay at an all-inclusive resort when visiting Nassau.

Insider tip: What does all-inclusive mean? If you’re planning to stay at an all-inclusive resort in The Bahamas you can expect food and (alcoholic) drinks to be included around the clock. Sandals Royal Bahamian offers 11 high-quality restaurants , three swim-up bars , free unlimited watersports, and access to a private offshore island . Food and drinks are always included, always unlimited .
