Cynicism is a growing phenomenon in music. True love songs are hard to come by these days. Deriving its name from Rihanna’s “We Found Love,” Yellow Diamonds is a series of lyric breakdowns in which VIBE Senior Music Editor Austin Williams celebrates songs that sound like love found in a hopeless mainstream.
In Thursday’s (May 26) edition of this column, I mentioned my girlfriend and I celebrated our third anniversary in Puerto Rico. Because we’re both cursed with boundless work ethic and limited PTO, our trip was tragically short. But for the few days that we were able to get away, music was essential to our experience. From the merengue and salsa tunes that scored our private dance lesson to the tree frogs that sang us to sleep each night outside of our villa-style lodging, everything we heard enhanced the romanticism of our baecation. This includes the songs we played throughout our stay. There are a few key ingredients that determine what counts as baecation music. Of course, love has to be at the center of each song, preferably a carefree and uncomplicated one. There also needs to be a warmness to the music’s production that’d match the climate of most baecation destinations. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, each ballad must contain enough nostalgia and singalong-friendly lyrics to inspire impromptu duets between lovers. With all these factors in mind, I’ve compiled 12 baecation love songs crucial to curating the right vibes on your own romantic getaways this summer. Whether you and your partner are beach bums, sight-seers, or expert explorers, check out the music below for ideas on what to add to your travel playlists.
"Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)" - Ashanti
Vacation Vibe: For early aughts enthusiasts.
Whether it was the music of your childhood or the soundtrack to your adulthood, R&B music from the early 2000s brings people together like no other genre. This goes double for couples.
Ashanti is unquestionably the queen of baecation anthems from this era. Her breezy and blissful duets with Ja Rule alone earned her that crown. But of all her hits, “Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)” contains the best combination of lovestruck lyrics and beachbound aesthetics. This is perfect PTO music, made even better if you have someone to burn through those hours with.
"Rock The Boat" - Aaliyah
Vacation Vibe: Serene and sensual.
The spiritual predecessor to “Rock Wit U (Awww Baby),” Aaliyah’s “Rock The Boat” offers a similar sense of nostalgia but with a subtle hint of horniness. This record is for couples who don’t see the need to make separate playlists for laying out by the pool and laying up in the room.
"Why Don't We Fall In Love" - Amerie
Vacation Vibe: The first trip of the summer.
The start of the summer means more than just Memorial Day cookouts and sporadic flings. For those of us in long-term relationships, this time of year begins the countdown to the first baecation of the season. No other song captures the euphoric urgency that warm weather produces better than Amerie’s “Why Don’t We Fall In Love.”
"So Into You" - Tamia/"Into You" - Fabolous Feat. Tamia
Vacation Vibe: Hood love on the road.
Though I personally prefer Tamia’s solo version of “So Into You,” Fabolous’ remixed “Into You” elevates the original song from a feel-good ballad to an all-time great R&B-rap duet. And the music video imagining a love that starts on the block and blossoms on the beach makes it a certified baecation bop.
"The Sweetest Taboo" - Sade
Vacation Vibe: For grown folks and old souls.
Notoriously smooth and intrinsically jazzy, Sade’s music feels scientifically engineered for baecations. If it isn’t thought of as such, that’s because much of it was released before the time of the people who invented the term. But as “The Sweetest Taboo” finds the band’s lead singer comparing every day with her lover to Christmas and every night to News Year’s Eve, the song narrates a romance so momentous it’d fit the vibe of any holiday getaway.
"Essence" - Wizkid Feat. Tems
Vacation Vibe: Devotion across the diaspora.
A love song so evergreen it survived one of two pandemic summers, “Essence” has earned its spot on any beacation playlist. Especially if you and your partner touch Nigeria or any other country in the Motherland. “You don’t need no other body” accurately describes the sweet solace of traveling with that one special person.
"Everyone Falls In Love" - Tanto Metro And Devonte
Vacation Vibe: Intoxicated island-hopping.
Jamaica is a popular destination for partners seeking paradise. While this 1999 single from Dancehall duo Tanto Metro and Devonte details a love that isn’t all sunshine and palm trees, the sweetness of its chorus hits like that third piña colada on your first day in Montego Bay.
"Boo'd Up" - Ella Mai
Vacation Vibe: Your first time out of town together.
While preparing for April 2022’s Yellow Diamonds interview with Ella Mai, I had the pleasure of revisiting “Boo’d Up” and remembering how adolescent and optimistic the singer’s 2017 single sounds. The record’s smitten and swooning songwriting feels synonymous with young love, making it an essential song for couples traveling together for the first time.
The inaugural baecation is a romantic milestone that could set the tone for each trip that follows. If you’re able to capture a feeling similar to what’s expressed throughout “Boo’d Up,” your future travels will be smooth sailing.
"I Like The Way (Kissing Game)" - Hi-Five
Vacation Vibe: For kids at heart.
One of my most memorable baecations to date came when my current girlfriend and I spent New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day at Walt Disney World. Grown and sexy getaways are great, but finding excuses to have some childlike fun is how you keep things fresh. This also applies to the music you play while you’re out of town.
There’s a contagious exuberance throughout “I Like The Way (Kissing Game).” The 1991 single from teen group Hi-Five is an exceedingly innocent and romantic jam that’d make even a years-long soulmate feel like a schoolyard crush. That sort of spark gets harder to come by the longer you’re with someone, so music and experiences that inspire it should be things you seek out regularly.
"Candy Rain" - Soul For Real
Vacation Vibe: For bonding with other Black couples.
Perhaps the song with the most singable chorus on this list, “Candy Rain” by Soul For Real is like a Bat-signal for Black romantics. If this 1994 classic plays by the pool, on the beach, or in a bar, every Black couple within 100 yards will instinctively croon its lyrics in unison. Tourists of color interested in double dates abroad would be wise to consider this a travel hack.
"Drunk In Love" - Beyoncé Feat. Jay-Z
Vacation Vibe: For partners obnoxiously obsessed with one another.
With “Drunk in Love,” spouses Beyoncé and Jay-Z arguably invented the subgenre of baecation love songs. The record is fun, overtly sexual, and presents a sort of main character syndrome spin on love that’d be embarrassing if it weren’t so enthralling.
As a romantic text, “Drunk in Love” can be engaged on two levels. On the surface lies its Instagramable lyrics and the power couple’s profound flirtatiousness, both cinematically captured on a beach in black and white. But at its core, the brilliance of Beyoncé’s 2013 single is in its estimation of what inspires baecations in the first place, the idea that the love that brought you and your partner to paradise can be just as intoxicating as the mojitos and margaritas you’ve been sipping on since you got there.
"Loyal" - PartyNextDoor Feat. Drake
Vacation Vibe: For lovers and (best) friends.
If you read the previous edition of Yellow Diamonds , you’d be correct in assuming this is a personal pick. Yet, while “Loyal” means a great deal to my own relationship, I believe its prioritization of friendship as the foundation of romance and its tropical pop production are what make it a great love song for any couple spending time abroad.
Everything needed to successfully travel with a partner is also essential to maintaining a friendship—mutual interests, an appreciation for each other’s company, and compatible lifestyles. As you and your soulmate continue to see the world together, it’s the bond you created right there in your hometown that makes the roundtrips and hotel packages worth every penny. If you remember that, even the days you spend together on the couch will feel like baecations.
