Train travel UK & Ireland...

Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, a great perk if you work for a uk train company.

If you have worked for a British train operating company for over 12 months and are entitled to reduced rate or free travel on British trains, you are almost certainly entitled to free or reduced rate travel on most European trains as well.  Your partner and dependent children also qualify.  This is an amazing perk, though it's often not 'advertised' by your employer.  Network Rail safeguarded staff employed before 31 March 1996 also get this perk, although NR staff who joined after this date don't.

How does it work?

There are two basic options for travelling in Europe on 'privs':  (1) using an FIP International Reduced Rate card to get a discount or (2) using FIP International Free Travel Coupons for (in most cases) completely free travel.

(1) FIP International Reduced Rate Card & how to get one

There are special rates on Eurostar for holders of FIP cards, you can buy these from Eurostar telesales or from agencies such as International Rail, 0333 003 0423 or via www.bookmyrst.co.uk .

London to Paris or Brussels costs £34.50 each way in standard or £52.50 in standard premier (1st class) with an FIP card.

London to Any Belgian Station costs £46.50 each way in standard or £70.50 in standard premier (1st class) with an FIP card.

London to Rotterdam or Amsterdam costs £44.50 each way in standard or £62.00 in standard premier (1st class) with an FIP card.

(2)  FIP International Free Coupon Tickets & how to order them

How to make reservations.

Option 1, International Rail who have the current official contract for handling staff bookings. FIP booking requests must be submitted through their dedicated Rail Staff Travel page at www.bookmyrst.co.uk , they no longer accept phone bookings.  Feedback appreciated .

Option 2, Trains Europe ( www.trainseurope.co.uk ) on 01354 660222 , lines open 09:00-19:00 Monday to Friday, 10:00-15:00 Saturdays & Sundays.  They do FIP tickets, one traveller has already reported great service. Feedback appreciated .

Option 3, Ffestiniog Travel ( www.ffestiniogtravel.co.uk ).  FIP booking requests must be submitted by email to [email protected] .

More information, a discussion forum & to read up on the small print

How to apply, more information welcome.

Feedback would be welcome , if you're a member of rail staff and use your free or reduced rate European travel facilities.

Diesel and electric haulage on the Continent

Tickets – FIP Travel (Rail Staff Travel)

One of the most treasured benefits of working on the railway (for an organisation that is a member of ATOC/RDG, at least) is that after a year of employment, you qualify for your free international passes, or FIP.  This is my non-exhaustive guide!

It is, perhaps, bizarre to think that if you, like me, joined the railway after privatisation, you need to pay to travel a few miles down the road if it happens to be on another TOC’s service, but you can travel for  absolutely nothing from Calais all the way to within sight of Africa or Russia if you choose – but this is the case.

FIP comes in two forms – your annual allocation of passes (coupons) for free rail travel in each country, and your FIP “International Reduced Rate” card (essentially, an international priv card) that gives you significant discounts on walk-up fares.

How to apply

Coupons need to be requested for each country you intend to visit individually.  You select which countries you want by way of tick boxes on the online form at  this link .  Applications must be submitted between 3 months and 3 weeks before your trip – you stipulate the start date of your ticket when you apply and each coupon is then valid for four 48-hour periods within the following 3 months.  Your entitlement for each country is refreshed annually – for some countries (e.g. France, Belgium and the Netherlands) you get two coupons per year.

To request your International Reduced Rate card, fill in the form at this link .  You only need one of these, regardless of how many countries you intend to visit.  As these operate on much the same principal as our domestic priv cards, they are worth getting into your possession as soon as possible, even if they just gather dust in your wallet until it’s time for renewal.

There is no provision for FIP travel at all in Sweden, nor on many of the private railway operators in other countries – some of which have quite extensive networks e.g. ALEX in Germany or Trenord in Italy.  Additionally, there is no free coupon provision for Bosnia-Herzegovina, but there are discounted single tickets available with the FIP card.

Some single journeys within metropolitan areas, particularly in Germany, do not qualify for FIP discount, as these fares are set by the local transport authorities rather than the train operator.  This is irritating, but unavoidable.

Journeys on high-speed services such as Eurostar and Thalys are subject to special FIP fares and coupons are not valid.  There are also some individual services on which you can’t use any FIP discounts – mainly “premium” services such as the (loco hauled) “City Airport Train” (CAT) between Wien and its airport or the Airport Express services between Oslo and Gardermoen airport, etc.

It is best to refer to and keep an eye on the Rail Staff Travel section of the RDG website for updates regarding international rail staff travel and its validity.

Ticket machines

When buying a discounted ticket with your FIP card, it is far better to seek out a booking office where you can do this with a human.  In the same way as you can’t buy a priv ticket here, most ticket machines do not allow you to buy a FIP ticket directly.

There is no magnetic strip or equivalent in a FIP coupon so barriered stations can sometimes be tricky to navigate.  There is no common solution to this – for the Netherlands, your coupon arrives with a another slip containing a QR code that will open station barriers.  However, I’ve had problems on the RER in Paris, among others – despite being completely valid on the trains, I’ve had no means of opening the unmanned barriers to enter or egress the system, and with time ticking away for a flight on one memorable morning (whilst en route from Boulogne to work!), had to double-up with locals through barriers at both ends of my journey.

However, it must be seen that the pros massively outweigh the cons!

Family and Dependents

If you have family or dependents who are entitled to priv travel through you at home, then they also qualify for an element of FIP.  More info at the online form here .

Reservations

Having FIP travel documentation does not absolve you of the responsibility to purchase reservations where they are compulsory.

It is fair to say that the benefits of FIP are not well known among British railway staff as a whole (especially those who aren’t cranks), and surprisingly this does extend to some revenue staff on trains and at stations abroad.  Our hobby has a habit of taking us to places that are well away from the tourist trail, and it is not uncommon to find your ticket scrutinised from every possible angle as it is the first one they’ve come across.

One thing to really bear in mind, however, is that each box on a FIP coupon is valid for 48 hours, not 24.  Therefore, if you write a date on your ticket, say 01/06/17, then this sees you through to close of play on 02/06/17.  Many grippers seem unaware of this – it is not uncommon on the second day of a box for them to try and “helpfully” write that day’s date in the next box for you (thus depriving you of two days’ validity!) so do be vigilant of this if they take your coupon off you for a closer look.  The “two day rule” is written in four languages on your coupon so you should be able to make yourself understood.

It must be said though, that once they realise that you are fellow railway staff, many will treat you like an old friend and sit down and have a chat (even if you share no common language!).

Waymo Is Picking Up at the Airport. That's a Big Deal

A plane taking off superimposed over a row of white cars in a lot

On Tuesday, Alphabet’s self-driving vehicle developer Waymo said it would begin operating all-day, curbside pickups and drop-offs at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona. The announcement came with little fanfare—a post on X . But it signals that after years of delay, self-driving vehicles might be (literally) moving in the right direction.

The new curbside airport service sends a good signal about Waymo’s business, says Mike Ramsey, an automotive analyst with Gartner. “The airport is the primary destination and departure point for any sort of mobility service, whether it’s a cab, shuttle bus—or an autonomous robocab,” he says. Almost a decade ago, then-upstarts Uber and Lyft fought hard to gain access to airports . Less price-sensitive business travelers, families lugging bags, and anyone who doesn’t want to spend to park at the airport all want easy-to-access rides, making it an ideal place to base a taxi service.

Even before all-day curbside service began, the airport was Waymo’s most popular destination in Phoenix, says Brad Gillette, Waymo's market lead in the city. Waymo has operated self-driving vehicles in Arizona since 2017, and began offering rides to Phoenix’s airport at the end of 2022. For the first year of service, passengers could only get picked up and dropped off from the stations along the airport’s “Sky Train”—areas with less intense traffic. Late last year, Waymo began to offer nighttime curbside service between 10 pm and 6 am, also periods in which the airport was less hectic. Now, the service is open anytime, to anyone who downloads the company's Waymo One app.

The company says it has served nearly 100,000 rides to and from the airport since it first started its station service nearly two years ago, and is now serving thousands of travelers per week.

The airport departures and arrivals curbs are also a really difficult place to drive. Cars pulling in and out, hunting for passengers, operating in tight spaces—this sort of thing is hard enough for a human. Gillette says it took Waymo a year of testing to ensure the company’s technology “can predict and react appropriately, with a certain level of assertiveness, in order to pull into the right place at the right time.”

Waymos will pick up and drop off from designated terminal rideshare and electric vehicle pickup areas, Eric Everts, a public information officer for the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, said in an email. Through Waymo’s app, passengers will be given specific dwell times to load into vehicles, and the cars will leave them behind if they don’t hit the deadline, Everts wrote—implying that traffic cops won’t have to hassle the driverless vehicles to move along.

Last summer, curbside pickup and dropoff became a point of contention as Waymo and competitor Cruise both applied to begin full-time paid passenger robotaxi service in San Francisco—to, basically, officially take on Uber and Lyft in the city where those services were born. In letters to the regulator overseeing the permitting, the city of San Francisco said it was concerned that robotaxis weren’t pulling close enough to curbs to pick up and drop off passengers.

For California regulators, who control autonomous vehicle operations in the state, the concern wasn’t much of a sticking point: A commission approved the permits in August 2023 . (Cruise has since had its permit to operate rides in the state revoked , after state officials alleged the company concealed details of an incident in which an autonomous vehicle dragged a pedestrian some 20 feet.) But for some city officials and residents, robotaxis’ behavior at the curb was enough to say, no thanks .

17 Best Early Labor Day Deals

Not so in Phoenix. The service also indicates good things about Waymo’s relationship with local public officials. On Tuesday, Phoenix mayor Kate Gallego posted a video on X in support of the new curbside service.

“It’s a good sign for Waymo’s capabilities, and its eventual ability to expand its service to other markets,” says Sam Abuelsamid, a principal research analyst covering mobility at Guidehouse Insights, an advisory firm. Abuelsamid said he wasn’t surprised by Waymo’s new airport service after recently riding a Waymo in San Francisco, where the vehicle smoothly pulled over to pick him up at a busy mall.

Waymo operates self-driving taxi services in the Phoenix area and in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company said last week that it would begin to test fully driverless vehicles—without a safety driver present—on San Francisco highways. But it still does not have permission to operate at San Francisco International Airport. Doug Yakel, a spokesperson for the airport, says Waymo has applied to digitally map airport roadways, the first step in launching service there, and that the airport is currently reviewing the request.

Waymo also operates an invite-only service in sections of Los Angeles , and has announced plans to start service in Austin, Texas, later this year.

First-of-its-kind zero-emissions train rolls into San Bernardino

ZEMU arrives in San Bernardino.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

The first zero-emission passenger train in the U.S. has rolled into San Bernardino, and passengers should be able to ride the clean-energy line early next year, transportation authorities said.

San Bernardino County Transit Authority presented the $20-million, 108-passenger train — the Zero Emission Multiple Unit, or ZEMU — at a public ceremony Thursday at the San Bernardino Depot Train Station.

ZEMU is North America’s first self-powered, zero-emission passenger train to meet Federal Railroad Administration requirements, according to the transit authority.

“What we have done with ZEMU is transformational,” San Bernardino County Transit Authority President Ray Marquez said in a statement. “The development of the train has solidified SBCTA’s place as an innovator in clean passenger rail here in the Inland Empire, throughout the state and the nation.”

Zum is providing a fleet of 74 electric school buses and bidirectional chargers in Oakland, managed through its AI-enabled technology platform. The all-EV fleet will not only transport students sustainably, but also play a critical dual role as a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), giving 2.1 gigawatt hours of energy back to the power grid at scale annually.

California school district becomes first in nation to go all electric buses

Oakland Unified announced Thursday that it is the first school district in the nation to use a fully electric bus fleet.

May 18, 2024

The train will serve the Arrow Line, a 9-mile transit line with five stops between downtown San Bernardino and the University of Redlands.

The zero-emission train represents an environmental transportation coup for the private liberal arts college, which boasts Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building standards.

“The Arrow Rail Line has already made a transformative impact on the University of Redlands, linking our students and campus to the greater Southern California region,” University of Redlands President Krista Newkirk said in a statement. “The addition of the first self-powered, zero-emission passenger train takes this progress even further, amplifying our university’s commitment to investing in clean energy.”

ZEMU, a clean-energy train, arrives June 30 in San Bernardino.

The Arrow Line debuted in October 2022 and allows for westbound connections to Los Angeles’ Union Station.

The Arrow Line is Metrolink’s fastest-growing line, enjoying a 4% weekday increase and a 21% bump in weekend ridership from the previous quarter, according to Metrolink’s third-quarter figures from 2024. The line is the smallest of eight regional routes and serves 416 daily weekday and 6,433 weekend passengers.

ZEMU is expected to be integrated into the Arrow Line’s route shortly after the new year, according to Tim Watkins, SBCTA’s chief legislative and public affairs officer.

The train was built by manufacturer Stadler at its eastern Swiss headquarters before heading to Belgium via truck and barge. It departed on a transatlantic voyage and reached Galveston, Texas, in fall 2023.

It eventually was tested at the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colo., and then departed Colorado for San Bernardino on June 18, aided by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe locomotive. It pulled into the station on June 21.

ZEMU joins a fleet of three Diesel Multiple Unit trains, built by Stadler, that currently serve the Arrow corridor.

Those DMUs run on renewable fuel made from recycled natural fats and vegetable oils.

ZEMU uses Stadler’s Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train, or FLIRT, concept. The train uses a hybrid hydrogen and battery technology for propulsion and to power onboard electrical systems. Water vapor is the only emission generated from the propulsion system.

Currently, ZEMU is fueled by blue hydrogen , which uses natural gas and a steam reforming process to extract hydrogen. The resulting process produces carbon dioxide that is captured and stored for other uses.

Eventually, the SBCTA hopes to adapt to green hydrogen, a cleaner form of fuel, that relies on electrolysis to extract hydrogen and doesn’t produce a carbon byproduct.

The zero-emission vehicle is a welcome addition to an area that has struggled with breathable air, according to Watkins.

San Bernardino received a letter grade of ”F” or “Fail” in all categories of the 2024 “State of the Air” index by the American Lung Assn. The grades are based on the number of days a county’s air reaches unhealthful levels when measuring ozone and particle pollution.

“We’re in one of the worst air quality attainment areas,” Watkins said. “We’re interested in real solutions that can mitigate those challenges and deliver breathable air.”

SBCTA said it had procured just over $60 million in state and local funding for the project. Other capital uses include testing, research and development and the redevelopment and retrofitting of the Arrow Line’s maintenance facility in San Bernardino to accommodate the larger ZEMU.

The hope, Watkins said, is that this first ZEMU will lead to the conversion of Metrolink’s entire fleet.

Hi all, Due to start with TfW in the new year. I know staff get free travel within the company, but I had a now (ex) friend who works for northern and mentioned a 75% discount. How does that work, is it still a thing? I remember when I worked for first we got £6 day tickets for us, friends and family, would there be a similar option? If anyone knows, thanks!

Police: Gardens man, 77, died when car hits Brightline train south of PGA Boulevard

Eric p. geller, 77, died in the second fatal crash involving a vehicle and a brightline train in northern palm beach county this month..

Portrait of Maya Washburn

PALM BEACH GARDENS — A 77-year-old Palm Beach Gardens man is dead after his car crashed into a northbound Brightline train on Monday afternoon south of PGA Boulevard, police said.

Investigators on Tuesday identified the man who died as Eric P. Geller. He was driving a white Audi sedan and was the only occupant of the vehicle, according to Palm Beach Gardens police. They said they have notified his next of kin.

The wreck took place at around 2:15 p.m. where Burns Road crosses the FEC Railway tracks just west of Alternate A1A. Police said they are still investigating details of the crash, including the direction in which Geller was driving on Burns at the time of the wreck.

It is the second crash involving a Brightline train and a vehicle in northern Palm Beach County this month. A 68-year-old North Palm Beach man died Aug. 8 in a wreck where the FEC tracks cross Northlake Boulevard, about 2 miles to the southeast.

More than 30 pedestrian and driver deaths involving Brightline trains have occurred in Palm Beach County since the rail line began service between Miami and West Palm Beach in 2018. Brightline's service now includes travel to and from Orlando International Airport, with the company expanding its route last September.

The FEC tracks lie near near the Intracoastal Waterway and cross multiple east-west roads between Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties. They have few natural barriers preventing pedestrians from walking along them.

The railway and local state and local officials have spent millions of dollars on programs to warn people to stay off the tracks and to be aware of oncoming trains, including signs and electric signals at crossings.

Monday's wreck was the third fatal crash in August involving a train in Palm Beach County. A woman died Aug. 14 after a Tri-Rail commuter train struck her as she walked just south of the Delray Beach station.

Staff Travel guides for holders of the Rail Staff Leisure Card

Staff travel guides for holders of the rst online leisure card, staff travel guides for holders of the staff travel card, staff travel restrictions in great britain, staff travel on eurostar, staff travel in europe, visitors to britain with fip facilities, travel irregularities, leaving railway employment.

These documents help you understand how and when you can use your Rail Staff Travel privileges.

Staff travellers must ensure priority is given to fare-paying passengers. They should, whenever possible, seek to travel on lightly-loaded services. When this is not possible and travel is undertaken on a crowded train, they should stand back to allow fare-paying passengers to obtain seats.

Those eligible to travel in first class accommodation may be asked by on-train staff to vacate their first class seat in favour of standing fare-paying passengers. Active staff are required to do so in these circumstances.
