STEEL PANTHER Announces August/September 2024 U.S. Tour

With their recent U.S. headline tour now wrapped and before the band heads over to continue their global domination in Europe, California glam metal jokesters STEEL PANTHER have announced the final batch of headline dates in the U.S. as part of their "On The Prowl" world tour 2024. STEEL PANTHER said: "Some of you thought the 'On The Prowl' tour was over. Some of you thought you missed your chance to see us live. Some of you just forgot what day of the week it is. In any instance, being so wrong has never felt so right. We're back, bitches, and you don't want to miss this one."

STEEL PANTHER recently had another career first as they have moved their brand into the world of skateboarding. The band has spent the past year designing an official skateboard deck complete with band illustration on the bottom, custom grip tape and fluorescent green wheels. The "Build A Board" bundle sells for $124.99 (trucks and bearings are not included) for the STEEL PANTHER skateboarder in your life and there is a "Wall Hanger" bundle for $74.99 for the non-skateboarder that loves bitchin' artwork. A video of STEEL PANTHER frontman Michael Starr showcasing the skateboard can be seen below.

In a recent interview with The Hook Rocks! , Starr spoke about the challenge of combining raucous comedy with undeniably catchy rock tunes. He said: "That's the thing about our music, is we know we're poking fun and we're cracking jokes. We have to play good to be able to do that. You can't just like not be able to play and just be comedians. You have to be able to play. And then the other part that we think we're good at is making people laugh and have a good time."

Asked about the task of balancing comedic timing with putting on a high-energy rock show, the 58-year-old Starr , whose real name is Ralph Saenz , said: "I think for us, it really is just how we are as people. After doing this for so many years, we do have a set of jokes that we use a lot, but we also have stuff we haven't used in years and it just ends up popping up and we just say it. But a lot of it's really organic. I mean, we play off the crowd and we're able just to interact with them.

"When we were a cover band and doing the same type of show as a cover band, we learned that you still have to have some sort of structure to it," he explained. "You can't just talk the whole time. 'Cause we did that stuff, and people were throwing shit at us, like, 'Play some fucking music, man.' And so we learned, when you're a major touring act, you've gotta have some sort of structure. So, we structured it out and we have holes for improv and we have holes for whatever we wanna do. But at the same time there's curfews, there's people that are relying on you ending at a certain time and starting at a certain time, so it's a little bit different, but at the same time, it's still organic. And I think that's what makes us unique."

On the topic of whether he and his STEEL PANTHER bandmates work out the jokes in advance, Michael said: "We work them out while we're hanging out together, just in general. Even when we're offstage, we're still riffing. I don't know what that is, but we still just do it. We'll just riff the whole time, be different people and just fuck around with each other. And especially if we have people on the bus or we're hosting a backstage party, then we just start performing because we just can't help ourselves."

Formed in 2000, STEEL PANTHER specializes in imitating and exaggerating the less flattering aspects of 1980s hair metal, with unrepentantly crude, non-PC sexual content as a favorite lyrical theme.

The group's music has been described as " VAN HALEN meets MÖTLEY CRÜE meets RATT meets 'Wayne's World' , complete with operatic shrieks, misogyny, shredding guitar solos and libidinal overdrive."

Sixteen years ago, STEEL PANTHER changed its name from METAL SKOOL to its current moniker and shifted the focus of its act from '80s metal covers to originals.

STEEL PANTHER 's sixth studio album, "On The Prowl" , was released in February 2023.

In September 2022, STEEL PANTHER announced the addition of Spyder as the band's new bassist.

Everybody Wants Him: Steel Panther Tour Manager/Tech Joe Lester

If there is anyone in the music industry who deserves a congratulatory pat on the back of his freshly-pressed “Jack Of All Trades” T-shirt, it’s Joe Lester.

Joe who, you ask?

steel panther tour bus

That’s Joe Lester.

His latest role involved him filling in onstage for regular Steel Panther bassist Lexxi Foxx, who was unable to perform with the band for two weeks after checking himself into a sex addiction clinic in an attempt to get his penile proclivities under control. Lester, as the band’s acting tour manager, guitar tech, and a bassist himself, already knew the material front to back. The writing, as Faster Pussycat once said, was on the bathroom wall. So, in his best version of Clark Kent, Lester stepped into the band’s tour bus and seconds later emerged as “Spyder,” Foxx’s replacement. The rest is  rock n’ roll history.

ListenIowa caught up with Lester recently to talk about his many roles in the world of Steel Panther.

ListenIowa: You’ve been working for Steel Panther, first as their guitar tech, then as their tour manager. How did you land those gigs? Joe Lester: I’ve known these guys for about 25 years, so we go way back. I actually started out shooting photos of them and going out on a few of their tours as their tour photographer. There was a couple times on the tours where they mentioned me being their tour manager and that they thought it would be something that I would be very good at. I had never even considered something like that, but took a shot at it.  Now I’ve been tour managing them for over two years. About a year ago, I started running all of their touring logistics, too, so it’s been a crazy ride. The guitar teching came up about 9 months after I started tour managing them. We decided to not have a guitar tech on the month-long tour we did with Stone Sour in 2018. So, I was tour manager and guitar tech at the same time. It went flawlesssly, and I’ve been doing double-duty ever since.

LI: And then you actually performed with the band when Lexxi went into sex rehab. JL: We were geared up for the band’s annual two-week Christmas show run in the midwest, and about 11 days before the tour, I got a call from the band telling me that Lexxi can’t do the tour, and asking if I could be the tour manager and play bass, too. Of course I said “yes,” and started running through the songs immediately. Crazy thing is, I had filled in for Lexxi numerous times when Panther only was playing covers. But I hadn’t filled since they started making their own albums. I had never played the songs, but luckily I knew them so well it made it easier to chart out the arrangements, and it definitely sped up the learning process.

LI: Did they try out any other bass players, or were you the guy from Day 1? JL: There were no tryouts. I was the logical choice, I guess.

steel panther tour bus

LI: Did you have any jitters before the first show, or are you fairly immune to that by now? JL: Yeah, there were a few jitters, mostly about how the fans were going to react. That’s a huge character in the show that wasn’t going to be there. Then you have me dressed up like Nikki Sixx, about as opposite from Lexxi’s look as you can get. I’m sure it was a shock to the fans.

LI: I saw a video from a gig in which Satchel joked that your stage character, Spyder, resembled a version of “Nikki Sixx that had eaten Lexxi Foxx.” Ouch. JL: It is what it is, and I am who I am. I’ll never be a skinny musician no matter what I do. If Satchel can give Michael Starr shit about eating too much pizza, then I’m definitely going to have to take my lumps. It was actually pretty funny, and we played it off great in the show.

LI: The onstage banter between band members is always hilarious. Did they want you to contribute, or was it a case of sitting back because keeping up with those guys would be impossible? JL: Yeah, there was no reason for me to get involved in the banter. They had it all down. There’s so much improv in their shows that you just have to run with it. All I did in the show was introduce Satchel for his guitar solo. In between songs, I stayed back next to Stix and just complained to him whenever Satchel and Michael Starr would rail on me. (laughs)

LI: So what were the audiences’ reactions to Spyder? Accepting, or did you catch some heat at places? JL: It was my favorite part of the tour! Getting to watch the audience go from, “Who the hell is this playing bass, and where is Lexxi?” to “You freakin’ rock, dude!” It would take about four or five songs, and then the crowd was totally in to it. But, big kudos to the band. As much as they bagged on me at the start of the show, they also turned it around and made me the hero of the tour for filling in so they didn’t have to cancel it. That helped a lot. And huge thanks to the fans for being so accepting. I know for a lot of them (myself included), Lexxi is their favorite guy in the band. So it was really important to me to put on the best show possible and hope that they still really enjoyed the night.

steel panther tour bus

LI: Let’s talk about what went on backstage. (laughs) JL: Oh gosh, you know we can’t talk about the backstage stuff. (laughs)

LI: OK. How about memorable gigs, then? JL: The final show of the tour in Kansas City was pretty awesome. Close to 3,000 people, sold out in a killer, three-level theater. But, really, I had a blast on the whole run. Stress and all, every show with them is a total blast.

LI: Do you have a new appreciation for what it takes to BE Steel Panther now? JL: Yeah, you see it from the stage. They work so hard, and the show is so, so good. But you don’t realize how much physical energy they exert during the show. And then there’s the mental energy it takes to be on top of all of the improv comedy going on, and you have to really be on your toes and paying attention the whole 90 minutes. If you mess up, then you are part of the show and they are going to bag on you big-time. (laughs). But it’s so much fun. There’s no other band or show like it.

LI: Let’s suppose you want to do this again. What would your move be to get Lexxi out of the way so it could happen? JL: I’d have the tour bus stop at a petting zoo. When Lexxi is distracted, I’d get everyone but him back on the bus and off to the next stop. I’d tell the band that Lexxi quit to work in the petting zoo and the gig was now mine. Now that’s a great idea!

Recent tour reviews

Steel Panther brought a brand new show to Jannus. Lexii has new bass strings. Satchel has a new $300 signature guitar. Stix has a new drum head. You get the idea. The guys also brought new music from their Heavy Metal Rules CD that was just released. As always, the musicianship is tight. The harmonies spot on. The rhythms taking everyone on a heavy metal sex machine ride. This was my 5th time seeing Steel Panther. Michael Starr's voice is amazing. The joking back and forth is hilarious. You have to see this band live. It's been different and awesome every single time!

Great night was had by everyone there. It was easy to get to and tube trains where good. We arrived at 6.50 and doors opened at 7pm the staff where quick and was easy to have tickets scanned and move on into venue. The T-shirts where clear and priced clear to see. Got a good place on the floor to see band. The first band was a bit to much guitar for us but people seemed to like it. Then DJ came on which got the croud going well until Steel Panther came on stage. Then the place rocked the roof off. Toilets where clean and nice. Could do with a few more for women as we always seem to have to wait but it was ok. Leaving was a good as coming in staff friendly and opened doors. Tube was quick and got home in good time.

Hands down, the best Steel Panther show I have seen. Many, many awesome things happened, besides the boobs!!! The guys were on point, all night. Where else are you going to get a kick ass Rock N' Roll show, and comedy show, for the price of admission? These guys take their music, and comedy, very serious, and they really nailed it tonight. The House of Blues was on FIRE!!!! A big shout out to the opening act, Citizen Zero, they rocked the house as well. Amazing musicians in their own right, they should be proud.

With all that said, Arthur stole the show. The crowd "body surfed" a guy in a wheelchair up to the stage. Steel Panther stopped the show, gave him a backstage pass, picks, brought him up on stage, for the remainder of the evening, and gave this guy the night of his life.

There really needs to be more fans like Steel Panther fans, more people like Arthur, and more acts like Steel Panther in this world.

It would truly be a much better place to live in!!!

Thank you all for making it not only one of the most heart felt, but amazing nights of my life!!!

Steel Panther to Play Two Drive-In Concerts in September

The post Steel Panther to Play Two Drive-In Concerts in September appeared first on Consequence of Sound .

Steel Panther are the first notable metal band to announce that they will be playing drive-in concerts in the United States. The comedic glam-metal band will rock a pair of Pennsylvania gigs in Pittsburgh and Scranton on September 11th and 12th, respectively.

As you can see from their appearance on the show flyer (below), Steel Panther are certainly embracing the idea of the drive-in shows, which they’ve dubbed the “Loud Cars and Fast Guitars Tour”. The Starlite Drive-In (Pittsburgh) and Circle Drive-In (Scranton) typically host movies, but will accommodate heavy metal for a night as drive-in concerts become viable alternatives for live music during the pandemic — unless it’s The Chainsmokers in the Hamptons, where everything was a a mess .

“Bring your hot rod and hot dates to the concert event of the weekend,” the band stated in a press release. “This ain’t your momma’s NASCAR. This is Steel Panther live and out of our cage in Los Angeles. You’re welcome Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, the local government has informed us that it is totally ILLEGAL to attend this concert naked. They blamed COVID; so please STILL wear a mask when you’re around strangers!”

The hair-metal band’s live on-stage performance will also be projected on the movie screen, with audio piping through the outdoor PA and car stereos via FM transmitter to “help to keep all attendees socially and sexually distant.”

Intent on staying active through the pandemic, Steel Panther will also be hosting their “Rockdown in the Lockdown” livestream performance for all those who aren’t in Pennsylvania. The stream takes place at 5:00 p.m. ET / 2:00 p.m. PT on August 16th from the “ultra-sanitized, production-filled, multi-camera Drum Channel Studio in Oxnard, California.”

Ticket information for the drive-in shows can be found on Steel Panther’s website . Check out the tour poster below.
