Great experience! Will Recommend! Colleen was awesome at helping my girlfriend & I look at a camper that we had in mind. We told her what we want in a floor plan & how many people we needed it to sleep & what our budget was & she had us seated & doing the paper work in an hour of arriving the. We never felt pressured she answered all
Great experience! Very friendly and no pressure to buy. Colleen was great! She listened to us and what we wanted.
Highly recommended! Great working with Ken and his staff. On time delivery as promised. Bought a destination trailer and the guys that set it up were very professional and went over the camper with me. Highly recommended!

Truck Camper Dry and Wet Weights

Truck camper base dry weights have been provided by the manufacturers.  Be aware that (a) each manufacturer has different standards and options that are included or excluded from their base dry weights, and (b) very few truck campers leave the factory without additional options.   Make sure to add the weight of additional options for your truck and camper matching calculations.

The Truck Camper Magazine Buyers Guide uses a standardized equation to calculate truck camper wet weights. Starting with the manufacturers base dry weight, the equation adds the full fresh water weight, full hot water heater weight, full propane tank weight, battery weight, and 500 pounds for stuff.

The truth is that some manufacturers offer well-built and generously outfitted slide-in truck campers for the midsize pickup truck market.

Small truck-camper-focused builders as well as major RV corporations with multiple RV types and brands have stepped up and met the rising demand for smaller and lighter slide-in truck campers. Now let’s go shopping for a slide-in truck camper for that truck of yours, whether it be a Toyota Tacoma , Chevy Colorado , GMC Canyon , Ford Ranger , Jeep Gladiator , Nissan Frontier , and even the Honda Ridgeline .

The Best Truck Campers for Midsize Pickups

Four Wheel Campers produces custom truck campers based on multiple platforms. Choices range from the company’s super-lightweight Project M Topper camper shell to its large flatbed truck campers. In between those bookends are a collection of slide-in pop-top campers for pickups from midsize to 1-ton capacity.

Four Wheel Campers offers two slide-in pop-up truck camper models — the Swift (5-foot bed) and the Fleet (6-foot bed) — that are appropriate for the midsize pickup category we’re focused on here. The Swift has a base model dry weight of 935 pounds and was designed to fit midsize pickups with 5.5-foot beds. The Fleet is slightly larger than the Swift, designed for 6-foot beds, and listed with a 1,045-pound base model dry weight.

The Swift slide-in truck camper from Four Wheel Campers comes as a rollover couch platform in its standard form. The rollover couch starts as a 62 x 33-inch couch with storage underneath and can roll out into a considerably wider flat sleeping platform. Its cabover bed is a slide-out of 76 inches long by 72 inches wide.

Four Wheel Camper Swift

Standard features for the Swift include a kitchen area with Formica countertops, stainless steel sink with an electric water pump, a two-burner propane stove, and a 65L-capacity two-way refrigerator/freezer.

Electrics in the Four Wheel Campers Swift model includes a shore-power 110V system, Camper Battery System (battery, wiring, and battery isolator), 30A power converter with an IQ4 Smart Charger, multiple 12V outlets, and LED interior and outside porch lights. An LP/CO detector, smoke detector, and fire extinguisher are standard safety gear offered. The roof is also prewired for solar panels.

Nice touches such as a finished wood interior, a three-piece portable dining table, a powered roof fan, privacy curtains, and a screen door are all part of the Swift’s standard feature package. The Swift pop-up camper’s exterior is an all-aluminum construction, with a one-piece roof, insulation in the side walls and roof, and waterproof marine-grade cloth pop-up sides.

Its pop-top is manually operated but easily opened and shut by one person due to its gas strut roof lift assists. Folding lift panels on both ends lock the roof in the up position.

There are numerous options in the Swift model slide-in truck camper that can help deliver a camper package ideal for your needs. Build your own with creature comforts like a forced air furnace with a thermostat, a water heater with an outside shower, a roof-mounted 160W solar panel with a charger controller, a dual 12V battery package, or a porta-potty.

Other nice extras to choose from are a 270-degree awning, roof racks, a rear wall ladder, and camper jacks.

One of the nicest standards on the Backpack SS-500 is a 55-inch one-piece door for easy entry and egress. A 20,000-BTU heater furnace and a three-way (110V, 12V, LPG) refrigerator come with the base camper, as does an electric roof lift system with remote control, pre-wiring for electric camper jacks, solar system prep, and a power fan roof vent.

Palomino RV Backpack Truck Camper Floorplan SS-500

Among the options commonly ordered for the Palomino RV Backpack SS-500 are accessories such as an air conditioner, an entry step, and a 100W solar panel. An optional audio system, a 5-foot box awning, and a water heater/outside shower make life a lot nicer when camping.

You can also get Mesa Maple cabinets (lighter wood) or Greystone Maple cabinets (for a darker look). The premium optional Badlands Package also gets you a roof rack, a 100W solar panel with a charge controller, and a second battery tray for the Backpack SS-500 slide-in truck camper.

The Best Truck Campers for Midsize Pickups

Phoenix Pop Up Campers takes a completely different approach to truck campers. Among its products for pickups and flatbed trucks, Phoenix Pop Up Campers offer four different basic models for midsize trucks. From there on, it’s all a custom creation.

With a custom build menu on its website, Phoenix allows you to pick and choose from among the dozens of galley appointments, appliances, electronics, creature comforts, and cabinet arrangements in a wide variety of finishes to create your personalized pop-up truck camper.

Two of the most popular Phoenix Pop Up Campers models are the Level 1 and Stealthy-Mini. Both can be sized for midsize trucks with 5.5-foot or 6-foot beds. All slide-in Phoenix Pop Up Campers begin with a double-welded aluminum cage frame, fiberglass siding, and a molded aerodynamic cabover nose. Extruded polystyrene insulation fills the wall and ceiling.

Phoenix Pop-Up Campers

A Level 1 build gets an electric roof lift system, a 20-pound vented LPG tank system, a 20-gallon fresh water tank, and a 175W solar battery charging system. The Level 1 package also features a 30A converter and 110V shore power system, auxiliary deep cycle Group 24 battery, 100A lithium battery system, LED roof lights, and a three-speed reversible electric fan roof vent are also included.

The Level 1 offers a cabover queen-size bed with a 5-inch-thick combination foam/memory gel mattress and a dinette and table setup that can convert to a second bed. A large side window, front opening window, and louvered side window come with privacy curtains of your choice.

Phoenix Pop-Up Campers

The Base Birch clear-stain wood cabinetry and solid surface counters house a sink and two-burner stove combo, a 2.3-cubic-foot two-way refrigerator/freezer, and a 10,000-BTU furnace heater.

The Best Truck Campers for Midsize Pickups

Scout Campers produces three slide-in truck campers — the Yoho, Olympic, and the Kenai. All three campers share a design ethic of lightweight and modular construction that is built to last. The Olympic and Kenai are a good fit for half-ton capacity and greater pickups, while the Yolo is aimed squarely at the midsize pickup truck market.

The Yoho has a base dry weight of just 934 pounds and offers standard equipment that would be options for other truck campers of the same category. Its all-aluminum framing and gel coat fiberglass exterior and roof (with a composite substrate) provide a sturdy and well-insulated shell that’s designed for four-season camping.

Scout Yoho Camper

A short list of standard features for the Yoho includes thermal pane windows and a moon roof with screens and solar reflective shades, a convertible dinette lounge/second bed, stainless steel sink with direct exterior drain, a 10-pound LPG tank in a vented compartment with a quick-disconnect for an accessory hookup, 175W solar panel, portable 1,500W lithium power station, LED lights, and portable water storage with filtration.

The standard equipment roster for the Scout Campers Yoho continues with items such as a 4-cubic-foot gear locker, portable 4.9-gallon fuel can, 21-inch entry door with clear glass window and snap-on cover, and removable flooring. Security and safety standards include a solar porch light with a motion sensor, a fire extinguisher, and smoke, gas, and carbon monoxide detectors.

The choices of optional equipment and amenities are numerous. Popular add-ons to enhance your off-grid experience are a 45L portable refrigerator/freezer, dual-zone cooktop designed specifically for Scout, 270-degree awning, rear-mounted diesel heater, and roof racks.

The Yoho campers’ minimalist design is evidenced by the lack of a shore power connection and the focus on independence through its use of solar power systems, and its modular portable amenities like the fridge/freezer and indoor/outdoor gas cooktop offer a greater degree of versatility during outdoor adventures.

The Best Truck Campers for Midsize Pickups

Travel Lite RV offers travel trailers and truck campers. Its four slide-in truck camper offerings are the Up Country 750, Up Country 650, Atom, and the Cent. All four members of Travel Lite RV’s line of slide-in truck campers feature aluminum and laminated (no wood) construction.

While the Up Country 750, Up Country 650, and Atom are best suited for full-size pickup trucks, the Cent slide-in truck camper has a base dry weight of just 940 pounds and was designed specifically for midsize trucks.

Travel Lite Cent

Admittedly, the Travel Lite Cent is a somewhat atypical design for a truck camper, lacking the protruding cabover section that would normally accommodate the primary sleeping quarters of most truck campers. The configuration of the Cent slide-in truck camper allows it to be light and small enough to fit just about any midsize pickup with a short bed. The unique camper design is also great for people who want to put a roof rack on the cab of the truck to carry bulky gear like bikes and whitewater kayaks.

Highlights of the Cent truck camper stock gear list include amenities such as a stainless-steel sink, a high-rise kitchen faucet, an electric water pump, a high-efficiency vent fan, a compact portable two-burner stove, a 20,000-BTU furnace heater, a 20-pound LPG tank, and a 12V refrigerator.

Travel Lite RV Cent Floorplan

Electrics like the detachable 30A shore power cord, a 40A converter, and a system monitor panel make power management simple. The only option available at the time of this report for the Cent was a side-mount air conditioner.

The basic floorplan of the Travel Lite Cent slide-in truck camper delivers a side dinette that converts into a pull-out bed. That being its only sleeping accommodation makes the Cent too small for more than two people unless some sleep on the floor. Nonetheless, the Travel Lite Cent is offered with a host of available standard equipment and comes ready for off-grid adventures.

Truck Camper Buying Tips

Slide-in truck camper weight ratings.

First and foremost is the relationship between truck camper weights and the payload capacity of the midsize pickup truck you own or are planning to own. Truck campers are listed with a “base dry weight.” That number is the weight of the camper in its most basic configuration. Normally that number is without any optional equipment and without any fluids (water).

Why is that important? When you begin shopping for a slide-in truck camper, either building it custom or buying off a dealer lot, it will very likely be outfitted with numerous accessories and options that were not accounted for in that advertised base dry weight. Those options can add hundreds of pounds of additional weight, pushing the camper over or dangerously close to your intended vehicle’s payload capacity. That can cause irregular and unsafe handling behavior or serious damage to your pickup truck.

Luckily, some manufacturers offer weight calculators on their websites that can total up all the options you order and give you a final overall weight of the finished build. Sometimes, those overall build weights will be available from the RV dealership. If all else fails, you may have to find a way to weigh the camper. Be sure you know these real weights before you buy a truck camper for your midsize pickup.

Not All Pickups Are the Same

Payload ratings for pickup trucks are different for each body configuration and drivetrain type for every brand of pickup truck. For example, the payload rating for the 2023 Ford Ranger SuperCab 4×2 with a 6-foot bed is 1,905 pounds.

The payload rating for the 2023 Ford Ranger Tremor 4×4 with a 5-foot bed is 1,478 pounds. The 2023 Toyota Tacoma AccessCab SR5 V-6 4×2 with a 6-foot bed has a payload rating of 1,525 pounds, while the 2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab SR5 4×4 is rated at 1,105 pounds.

Not sure about the payload capacity of your truck? It will be on the sticker usually posted in the driver’s doorjamb or some other easily accessed location of the truck. If worse comes to worst, find the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of your truck. Weigh your truck at a public scale, then subtract its weight from the truck’s GVWR. The difference will give you a payload rating you can work with.

Sleeping Space

Most truck campers designed for midsize trucks come with a cabover bed that is referred to as a queen size. Be sure to get measurements of that bed. They can be smaller than a typical home queen bed. Some manufacturers will offer a larger cabover bed and a mattress that is more than a foam pad. A few offer gel/memory foam mattresses.

Almost all truck campers will offer a dinette/seating area that converts to a bed. These are rarely large enough to sleep an adult. More often than not, the bed made from a convertible couch or dinette will be best suited for children or teens. The manufacturer may advertise the camper as sleeping four, but that doesn’t mean four adults.

Kitchen Appliances

Truck campers meant for midsize pickups usually provide basic stoves and small sinks in the galley area. Two-burner stoves with piezo-electric ignition and larger sinks are almost always an option. Most come standard with a small refrigerator, but larger optional refrigerator/freezers are commonly offered as options.

If your style of camping includes frequent outdoor dining or cooking on a portable grill or campfire, a basic kitchen with a small refrigerator augmented by an ice chest may be just the thing for you. It will keep your costs and the weight of your camper down.

It’s rare to find a truck camper for a midsize truck with much more than a porta-potty or storage space for a porta-potty. A few companies offer optional built-in toilet and even shower facilities, but again that will add cost and weight, and take up space that might have been better used for storage space. Outside showers with water heaters are also offered as options for some truck campers designed for midsize trucks as well.

Storage Space

Interior storage space is often found under or along the sides of the cabover bed and under dinette seating or fold-down couches in smaller truck campers. Some offer dedicated shelved storage space, and most offer storage in the kitchen cabinets underneath the stove and sink.

Large exterior storage spaces are not commonly found in smaller truck campers, but some manufacturers do offer locking exterior storage. Roof racks are a common option on truck campers for midsize pickups, and these do come in handy for larger items such as canoes and bicycles.

Electrics, Gas, and Water

Every camper comes with some sort of power source such as a battery to run the internal electrical equipment like the lighting, refrigerator, water pump, roof vent fans, and any optional equipment such as audio systems.

The camper batteries are in many cases capable of being charged through connection to the truck’s charging system while you’re driving. Most all truck campers are also equipped with what’s called shore power or camp power connections that link the camper into electrical outlets often found in improved campgrounds and RV parks. The camper batteries can also be kept charged when you’re boondocking through solar charging systems or high-capacity portable battery systems that are usually options.

Gas (LPG) tanks are standard equipment on almost all truck campers, and most hold 20 pounds of propane to run cooking stoves, furnace/heaters, or three-way refrigerators. Water tanks are almost universally available in truck campers meant for midsize pickups, typically with 20-gallon or fewer capacities.

Numerous aftermarket products are available that can help your pickup truck better handle the weight of the camper. High-quality replacement shock absorbers will provide better suspension damping and overall stability while driving.

Some trucks will sag a bit in the rear end with a camper loaded up. Helper spring kits for the rear end can raise the ride height. Air-bag systems for the rear suspension are also a good choice for managing the camper’s effect on your truck.

Yes, it can be financed through your bank or credit union. RV dealers and manufacturers often have financing options they can offer as well. Unfortunately, the slide-in truck camper can’t be financed as part of the truck purchase because the camper is not a permanent structure of the truck. Truck camper loan terms are commonly 10 to 20 years.

Slide-in truck campers use special brackets that mount to the truck (the better systems use frame-mounted brackets) and to the camper body. These truck and camper mounts (usually four, two on each side) are connected by turnbuckles that can be adjusted to securely join the camper to the truck. Attaching the camper to the truck frame offers greater stability for the camper than attaching it to the body of the truck.

A sheet of 1-inch plywood with a 3/8-inch soft rubber mat on top is recommended by the manufacturers we contacted. It creates a sturdy support platform between the truck bed and the bottom of the camper, and the plywood/rubber combo resists camper sliding and makes the truck bed and camper connection more stable.

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma has a payload capacity of 1,050 to 1,685 pounds, with the higher end of that spectrum on the base SR and SR5 model trucks. The higher optioned and better off-road 2023 Tacoma TRD Pro only has 1,050 to 1,135 pounds of payload capacity.

Remember payload includes fuel, people, and gear, on top of the camper weight. People, gear, and the modification you’re likely to do add up to quite a lot, leaving very little load capacity left in a Tacoma. A great place to start your shopping for a Toyota Tacoma truck camper is the Four Wheel Campers Swift.

The 2023 Honda Ridgeline has a payload capacity of 1,509 to 1,583 pounds, which is quite impressive for a midsize U.S. pickup. Any of the campers on our list are suitable in terms of payload, but the lighter and more streamlined the camper the better for a unibody truck like the Ridgeline. A great place to start your shopping for a Honda Ridgeline truck camper is the Phoenix Pop Up Campers Stealthy-Mini.

CBSA work-to-rule would create 'chaos,' quick government response, professor says

Canadian border workers are in a legal strike position on friday.

The tops of transport trucks and a blue bridge in the background.

Social Sharing

Starting Friday, roughly 9,000 Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) workers will be in a legal strike position with the Treasury Board of Canada — which oversees the CBSA.

That's if mediation fails between the two sides. They started that process on Monday.

However, because they're deemed an essential service they cannot strike.

  • Border unions, Treasury Board should immediately resume negotiations, panel recommends
  • Border unions threaten summer disruptions after members vote in favour of striking

Work-to-rule is a strong possibility, according to Carleton University associate professor of management Ian Lee.

He thinks it would create chaos at border crossings and checkpoints by applying all of the rules within their discretion — such as asking every possible question to each vehicle, impounding vehicles and checking luggage without a search warrant.

Border workers

"You can create tremendous lineups of those trucks and tremendous lineups of people. It'll be very, very disruptive if they do work-to-rule, because so many people cross that border every day."

Lee says unlike many government jobs, borders are extremely visible, meaning it will be impossible not to notice any disruptions because of job action.

"It has an immediate impact … especially trucks that bring stuff into Canada. And 90 per cent of all the goods that are in Canada come in on trucks, those big 18-wheeler trucks."

Ian Lee is pictured at his home office in Ottawa on May 2, 2024. He is an associate professor at the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University.

Last month, members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC)-affiliated Customs and Immigration Union (CIU) voted 96 per cent in favour of strike action, according to the union.

PSAC says it still hopes to avoid job action and border disruptions but has set a deadline of 4 p.m. ET on Friday.

Government 'fully committed' to reaching a deal

According to a Wednesday afternoon statement from the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, about 90 per cent of workers occupy essential service positions and must continue to provide services.

"Border services group employees provide important services to Canadians and the government is fully committed to reaching an agreement that is fair for them and reasonable for taxpayers, just like similar agreements already reached with 17 bargaining units and covering more than 80 per cent of the public service," the statement read.

The statement said the government is "prepared to make concessions but there needs to be movement on both sides."

"We are disappointed that PSAC has threatened labour disruptions when we are ready and willing to negotiate and reach a fair agreement through good faith bargaining."

The unions say key issues include pay parity with other law enforcement agencies, flexible telework and remote work options, automation, pension benefits and stronger workplace protections.

CIU president Mark Weber says there's been little progress at the bargaining table.

"This is just about getting us what almost all other law enforcement already has," Weber said. "This is about... getting us the ability to retire without penalty after 25 years, which all other law enforcement and most public safety has, basic protections around excessive discipline, basic protections around contracting out."

Webber says they want pay equity with the RCMP, which he says they currently fall short of by about 15 per cent.

PSAC says job action three years ago by border agency personnel "nearly brought commercial cross-border traffic to a standstill, causing major delays at airports and borders across the country."

Concerned trucking company

A Windsor, Ont.,-area trucking company is concerned about potential border job action slowing down their deliveries.

Onfreight Logistics, out of Tecumseh, makes shipments primarily in the automotive industry, along with other items such as alcohol.

Asset and fleet safety manager Jim Pereira says it could end up being costly.

"We're talking about schedule issues with operations and customers and trying to get drivers to their locations on time," he said.

Trucks lined up at the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, Ont.

Pereira says costs could include paying drivers long during extended wait times, financial penalties with customers and having extra drivers on hand.

He says it ends up as a trickle-down effect in the industry.

"Work-to-rule can slow things down, and then it just dominoes."

Pereira says a 10-minute delay at the Ambassador Bridge border crossing can easily turn into an hour or more based on the wait times.

'The public will get very angry'

Lee believes the response to any job action or work-to-rule by border service employees will be "very quick" once the media puts out visuals of long lines for public consumption.

"The public will get very angry and start yelling at the MPs and the cabinet ministers and the prime minister. They will feel the heat very, very quickly."

And he thinks they'll move just as fast.

Cars bound for Canada line the Rainbow International Bridge, in Niagara Falls, on Aug. 9, 2021. Canada now allows fully vaccinated Americans to both enter the country and skip the previously mandatory 14-day quarantine period as part of an easing of COVID-19 restrictions on travel.

"They can order a binding arbitration imposed on the two parties meeting on the Treasury Board and the CBSA, or they can legislate these people back to work and to stop doing what they're doing."

Lee says anyone in the transportation sector will be legislated back to work.

"It has such a profoundly negative impact on the economy and on and on the greater good that even if you had the right to strike de facto, you don't."

I like to travel light, whether I’m walking city streets, trekking across the countryside or jetting off to the other side of the world. Conventional full-sized tripods tend to be big, heavy, and unwieldy – so I often leave mine at home, making it completely useless. By contrast, the best travel tripods literally take a load off. They’re made to be compact and lightweight but, in the past, they’ve often been notorious for being flimsy, relatively unstable, and too small to offer a useful operating height. The new breed of travel tripods tempt me with the promise of giving me the best of both worlds.

Most modern travel tripods have legs that swing upwards for storage, so that the head is encircled by the feet. This typically reduces the folded height by as much as 4" / 10cm. Some also include as many as five sections in each leg, and a two-section extending center column, reducing the folded height even further, while still enabling reasonably lofty shooting. I find they take longer to set up and fold away but it’s a trade I’m willing to make for smaller stowage.

Matthew Richards is a photographer and journalist who has spent years using and reviewing all manner of photo gear. Best tripod: Peak Design Travel Tripod

1. Peak Design Travel Tripod

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

✅  You like innovative design and photographic kit that makes a real statement.

✅  You want a travel tripod that has the slimmest possible profile, thanks to specially shaped legs.

✅ You don’t mind paying top-dollar for a travel tripod, and can make use of all the features.

❌  You don’t want to pay over the odds for an aluminum or carbon fiber travel tripod – there’s no denying it’s pricey.

❌  You don’t need a mobile phone mount, which is a bit fiddly to get at.

❌ You’d rather have a different type of head, although an adapter is available separately.

The Peak Design Travel Tripod may be the first tripod that Peak Design has made, but it's hands-down one of the best travel tripods that I've ever used! There is an aluminum version that's a massive 40% cheaper, however, which has all the same design features, just a little more weight and less vibration resistance. A couple of the other tripods here will go higher, but the Peak Design will still go to eye level for an average-height person, and it packs down to just 39cm in length.

I like that it's designed to cut out the dead space between the legs and the column when packed, which means it's not just short when folded but very slim too – I can put this inside my camera bag or cabin bag instead of just strapping it to the outside. The low-profile ball head is simple but brilliant, there's a phone holder hidden inside the center column, and best of all for me, the tripod feels seriously rigid.

3 Legged Thing Leo 2.0

2. 3 Legged Thing Leo 2.0

✅  You want to choose your own head, although you can buy the legs on their own.

✅  You don’t like fiddling with lots of leg clamps and dual center column clamps.

✅ You’re keeping an eye on the bottom line – it’s a pricey travel tripod.

❌  You want to choose your own head, although you can buy the legs on their own.

❌  You don’t like fiddling with lots of leg clamps and dual center column clamps.

❌ You’re keeping an eye on the bottom line – it’s a pricey travel tripod.

The 3 Legged Thing Leo 2.0 is no ordinary tripod. It folds down to just 35cm in length but opens out to offer a maximum height of 146cm and a huge payload capacity of 30kg. That far exceeds the weight of any of my camera and lens combinations but the net result is great rigidity.

I like that it has a detachable monopod leg which can also be used as a microphone or camera boom, a Tri-Mount system for adding accessories, and an innovative two-section center column. That helps it to fold down really small yet reach a decent maximum operating height. You can buy the legs on their own but I’d get the complete kit with 3 Legged Thing’s new and improved AirHed Pro Lever ball head.

The Leo 2 is not the smallest travel tripod you can get, and not the cheapest, but its ratio of folded length to maximum height, combined with its all-around versatility, make it one of the best.

Vanguard VEO 3GO 235CB

3. Vanguard VEO 3GO 235CB

✅  You want a tripod that includes a smartphone adapter and even a Bluetooth controller.

✅  You’d like a tripod that works as a monopod and selfie stick as well.

✅ You want one of the absolute lightest travel tripods on the market.

❌  You want a heftier maximum load rating than 4kg.

❌  You’d rather have a taller maximum operating height than 136cm.

❌ You don’t feel the need for a low level adapter or dual rubber pad and spiked feet.

With five sections in each swing-up leg and a two-section center column, this Vanguard folds down to just over a foot long yet gives a reasonable maximum operating height. I find it can easily fit into my daily bag or backpack. It’s also very lightweight although, as expected, the alternative aluminum version is a little heavier. The bottom leg sections are quite spindly, with a diameter of just 11mm, but stability is pretty good even at full stretch.

As well as giving a typically quick and easy change to monopod configuration, the Vanguard is more unusual in coming complete with a smartphone adapter. I like that it works well as a monopod and even a selfie stick, so I only need to take one support for the journey rather than two or three.

4. Manfrotto Befree 3-Way Live Advanced

✅  You like the idea of a hybrid travel tripod, with a head that works well for video as well as stills.

✅  You feel reassured by buying a tripod from one of the biggest names in the business.

✅ You like flip locks rather than the more usual twist locks for leg clamps.

❌  You’d rather have a tripod kit that has a more usual ball head.

❌  You don’t shoot video, but stick to stills.

❌ You’d prefer a carbon fiber travel tripod rather than an aluminum one.

The Manfrotto Befree 3-Way Live Advanced is a lightweight photographer’s travel tripod paired with a three-way head. Although ball heads have become hugely popular, I actually prefer a 3-way head for the likes of architectural and close-up shooting, where precise adjustments can be critical. The 3-way fluid head in this case uses a hydraulic damping system to make it easy for smooth, fluid camera movements, so I find it also works well for shooting video.

The tripod, meanwhile, provides a good balance between capacity, weight, and price. It’ll take 6kg of kit and only weighs 2kg itself. I’ve tested lighter and stronger tripods, but they tended to be more pricey than this one.

It’s not as tall as some of the other tripods in this guide, and doesn’t fold down particularly small, the latter not helped by having a 3-way rather than ball head. But, for the vast majority of purposes, this is an impressive all-around package and merits serious consideration for any traveling photographer or videographer.

Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber tripod review

5. Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro

✅  You like different color options for the finish, instead of just black.

✅  You’d like a tripod that can adapt for tabletop and other uses.

✅ You want a tripod that comes complete with a smartphone mount.

❌  You don’t need a tripod with the extra versatility, which can be fiddly.

❌  You’d rather save money and buy the aluminum version of the tripod.

❌ You don’t like having so many leg and column clamps to deal with.

I thought the headline attraction of the so-called ‘6-in-1’ Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro would be its versatility. That’s obviously a headline feature but I’ve found that it's also a very good travel tripod, pure a simple. Even at full height it's impressively stable for its build, and it packs a few extra features that come in handy when I’m shooting with a camera or a phone.

I’ve found that it's an excellent travel tripod and, again, thanks to its versatility, it works well as a monopod and also as a mini table tripod, which are genuinely valuable additions. It's great that things like the hex key, small tripod legs, and smartphone clamp are contained within or attached to the tripod, making it much less likely that I’ll leave them behind or lose them along the way. The flip side is that the extra bits and pieces make the tripod a little heavier than it needs to be.

3 Legged Thing Punks Corey 2.0

6. 3 Legged Thing Punks Corey 2.0

✅  You’re happy with a magnesium alloy rather than carbon fiber travel tripod.

✅  You want great performance and versatility at a bargain price.

✅ You like the ability to shoot creatively from really low levels.

❌  You’d rather spend more on a carbon fiber tripod that’s not cold to the touch.

❌  You’d rather have something simpler, with less leg and column clamps to operate.

❌ You don’t need the 14kg payload because you’re using lightweight kit.

I find that all of the Punks tripods from 3 Legged Thing are very travel-friendly, but the Corey 2.0 is the smallest and easiest to pack for the journey. It has the usual swing-up legs to save stowage space, this time with five sections in each, plus a two-section head, enabling a decent maximum operating height but a very small stowage size.

Don’t be put off that this one’s not a carbon fiber tripod. It’s actually made from aerospace grade magnesium alloy and the upshot is that it’s still lightweight yet very strong, with a hefty 14kg maximum load rating.

It ticks another two boxes on my  wish list by easily converting to a monopod, and enabling ultra-low-level shooting with the option of attaching the ball head directly to the canopy (leaving the center column out of the equation). All three legs are removable, and Vanz footwear (sold separately) transforms the Corey 2.0 into a stylish tabletop tripod.

Benro Rhino FRHN05CVX20 review

7. Benro Rhino 05C (Zero Series) VX20

✅  You want a really small, lightweight tripod that still has a hefty 10kg load rating.

✅  You’re after a carbon fiber tripod that’s reasonably priced.

✅ You can make use of the secondary pan axis for shooting panoramas and video.

❌  The monopod configuration is nice to have but only stretches to a maximum height of 141cm.

❌  You’d like a travel tripod with a quick setup time.

❌ You’d prefer a tripod with feet that have metal spikes as well as rubber pads.

A plus point for me when space is at a premium is that the Benro Rhino 05C VX20 (also called the Rhino Zero Series VX20) is the smallest in a group of four recently launched Rhino travel tripods. Compactness doesn’t equate to flimsiness though and I’ve found that it’s remarkably rigid and robust for such a compact tripod. Another nice touch is that Benro’s companion VX ball heads have a secondary pan axis just under the camera plate. It’s great for taking sequences of panned shots to stitch into a panorama, and shooting video, as the panning axis remains on the level without the need to meticulously level the legs as well as the head.

I find that travel tripods have limitations, including a lower maximum working height and longer ‘unfolding’ time, but this goes with the territory and I can’t criticize the Rhino for that. Sure enough, this Benro doesn't extend to a particularly tall height, and outright rigidity can feel a little compromised if I fully extend all of the leg sections and both of the center column sections. When it’s not at full stretch though, I find this Benro is as rigid as much bigger and heavier tripods.

How to choose the best travel tripod

It’s good to be choosy when picking your perfect travel tripod for your needs and budget. Here’s a few things to bear in mind…

Carbon fiber is pricier than aluminum, but is it worth the extra?

Up-market tripods are usually made from carbon fiber instead of aluminum. They have a more luxurious feel, a smarter looking finish, and can be slightly more resistant to vibrations. Carbon fiber can also feel less cold to the touch. But the main advantage of carbon fiber is that it’s more lightweight than aluminum, giving it a clear advantage when you’re trying to shed weight. However, there can be diminishing returns. Although the weight-saving can be substantial in full-sized tripods, it’s much less noticeable in relatively small tripods. For many travel tripods that are available in both aluminum and carbon fiber options, the latter typically only saves around 200g in weight, little more than 10 per cent. Considering that the carbon fiber editions are often about 50 per cent more expensive to buy, aluminum travel tripods can be more cost effective.

How small is the tripod when folded?

A decade ago, the Giotto’s company launched a series of Vitruvian tripods, named after Leonardo da Vinci’s drawing, ‘The Vitruvian Man’. As in the drawing, the legs swing upwards but, in the case of the Giotto’s tripods they swung up completely, adopting a vertically upright orientation for stowing away. The trick was that, by fully extending the center column before swinging the legs up, the tripod head no longer extended beyond the length of the legs, making the carrying size much smaller. Many recent travel tripods fold down small enough to fit inside a bag or backpack, rather than needing to be tethered to the outside.

Can I save space by using a tripod as a monopod as well?

A neat trick of many recent travel tripods is that you can unscrew one of the tripod legs, detach the center column, and join the two together for use as a monopod, complete with ball head. That can be a real space saver if you like using a monopod as well as a tripod, as you only have to carry one bit of kit.

What’s so good about multi-angle legs?

Pretty much all travel tripods these days have legs that can be locked at multiple angles to the center column. Typically either two or three alternative angles are available, in addition to the legs being able to swing up vertically. This can help when you’re shooting on uneven terrain, or when there are obstacles in the way. For example, you might need to use one or two legs in a near-horizontal orientation and place the feet on a wall or table to get into your desired shooting position. Another bonus is that, by splaying the legs to a wider angle when shooting at low operating heights, you can increase stability and reduce the risk of the tripod toppling over if knocked.

How low can you go when shooting with a tripod?

Multi-angle legs help to reduce the minimum shooting height but the limiting factor is generally the point at which the center column touches the ground. The minimum height is therefore the height of the center column plus the ball head. A two-section extending center column can help to further reduce the minimum operating height, as well as the carrying height.  Some tripods are supplied with a short, stubby ‘low angle adaptor’. You can attach this to the tripod head and use it instead of the center column. The center column is also removable in most tripods, so you can invert it and shoot from between two of the legs with the camera upside down, right down at ground level.

What’s best for feet, pads or spikes?

Rubber pads are the normal footwear for tripods these days. They work well on solid ground as well as on grass and sandy areas. For soft surfaces like carpet, spikes can offer a more assured footing. Some tripods are supplied with both rubber pads and metal spikes, so you can swap between them as needed. Another option that used to be more common in the past is rubber pads on a threaded mount, so you can screw them in to reveal metal spikes beneath.

How we test travel tripods

We measure the maximum operating height of each tripod and its folded height for carrying, complete with head attached. We also measure the combined weight of each set of tripod legs and head, using electronic scales, and measure the diameter of all leg sections, from the widest to the thinnest, using digital calipers. We check the ease of use, smoothness and precision of all available adjustments in each set of tripod legs and heads. This ranges from adjusting leg sections and pivot facilities (where available), to the locking mechanisms of the head, as well as independent pan and friction damping adjustments, where fitted. To check overall stability, we shoot with a range of camera bodies fitted with wide-angle, standard, telephoto and macro lenses. We look for good resistance to flexing and vibrations throughout the whole range of operating heights, including the tallest available settings with the legs and center column fully extended.

Best travel credit card comparison chart

Our methodology.

To choose the best travel credit cards, our team reviewed dozens of cards from multiple issuers. We looked at the best rewards for regular purchases, the best signup bonuses, and the best travel-related benefits. We also considered annual fees and other common costs that you’re likely to incur. We didn’t, however, consider interest rates, as travel rewards cards are best for users who pay off the card in full monthly to avoid interest charges.

How to maximize your rewards with your travel credit card

If you want to maximize your rewards with travel credit cards, follow these quick tips:

  • Use your credit card for every purchase: You don’t earn miles or points when you don’t use the card. Use your rewards card for every eligible purchase to earn as much as possible. But be careful not to overspend and get into trouble with high card balances.
  • Consider multiple rewards cards: Mixing and matching multiple cards can get you the best rewards. For example, picking one card for restaurants, one for groceries , and one for gas could help you earn more.
  • Research each redemption: Don’t redeem your points without considering the value. When transferring to airline partners, getting values well over one cent per point is possible.

How to choose a travel credit card

Everyone has different travel goals, credit histories, incomes, and spending habits. Here are some additional considerations to guide your choice:

  • Spending habits: If you always cook at home and never go to restaurants, a restaurant rewards card wouldn’t be practical. Consider your budget and spending habits to find the best card .
  • Annual fee tolerance: Some people are okay with annual fees, while others will only tolerate them up to a certain point. With some popular cards requiring over $600 per year, you have to ask yourself what you would be willing to pay and which benefits you’ll use regularly.
  • Desired benefits: If you want airport lounges, status with a certain hotel or airline, or fast lines at the airport, find a card with those benefits.
  • Brand loyalty: Finally, if you love one airline or hotel—or simply find one most convenient for your travel priorities—its branded card could be a good choice or addition to one of the cards above.

How to compare credit cards

Every issuer offers different benefits and rewards. When comparing travel cards, look at the rewards program to determine if it favors your spending habits. Then look at any costs or fees you expect to pay, such as annual or foreign transaction fees. Next, look at statement credits and other benefits. The card that yields you the biggest net benefits (rewards and benefits minus expected annual fees and other costs) should be your top pick.

Also, consider the card’s credit score and other credit requirements before applying. That information should be available on the issuer’s website or by contacting its customer service desk.

Types of travel credit cards

Our favorite travel credit cards are general miles and points rewards cards. General rewards cards feature points or miles redeemable at a big list of airlines, hotels, and potentially additional travel companies.

Depending on your location and travel preferences, you may also find brand-specific cards helpful. For example, the United MileagePlus Explorer card comes with benefits and rewards miles only for use with United Airlines. Most airlines and hotels offer at least one credit card for loyal customers.

Alternatives to travel credit cards

If you don’t want a travel credit card, cash back credit cards are an excellent choice. Many of them have no annual fee. And, if you’re not into travel, the rewards come in the form of cash or points redeemable for cash.

Most cards with cash back rewards allow you to redeem for statement credits, which lower your credit card balance; direct deposit to a linked bank account; and sometimes for travel, gift cards, Amazon.com purchases, and other redemptions. Merchandise is usually a low-value redemption for your points.

You can also find cards with no rewards, often featuring lower fees and interest rates. A secured credit card may be the right choice for someone with bad credit or no credit.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What’s the difference between points and miles on a travel credit card.

Points and miles on a travel credit card are rewards earned through spending on the card. While they share similarities, there are some major differences between them.

General rewards points tend to offer more flexibility for redemption, as they can be used for various rewards, including flights, hotel stays, car rentals, and even cash back. However, miles are usually restricted to flight redemptions with a specific airline or its partners. Some travel credit cards may allow you to convert miles into points or vice versa, but this typically comes with a conversion rate and may not always offer the best value.

Ultimately, the difference between points and miles on a travel credit card comes down to how they are earned, their redemption options, and their value. Understanding the specific rewards program and choosing a card that aligns with your travel habits and preferences is essential to maximizing your rewards.

How do I know if a travel credit card is right for me?

Determining if a travel credit card is right depends on your spending habits, travel frequency, and personal preferences. First, consider your travel patterns and the type of travel rewards you desire—such as airline miles, hotel points, or more flexible rewards redeemable for various travel expenses. Frequent travelers who can take advantage of perks like lounge access, priority boarding, or free checked bags may find travel credit cards more valuable.

Additionally, assess your spending habits and ability to earn rewards. Travel credit cards often have higher annual fees and interest rates, so ensure that you can offset these costs through rewards, perks, and benefits. The right travel credit card for you should align with your lifestyle, provide valuable rewards, and offer perks that enhance your travel experiences.

Nigeria Confronts Its Worst Economic Crisis in a Generation

People in Africa’s most populous nation are suffering as the price of food, fuel and medicine has skyrocketed out of reach for many.

Reporting from Kano, Nigeria’s second-largest city

Nigeria is facing its worst economic crisis in decades, with skyrocketing inflation, a national currency in free-fall and millions of people struggling to buy food. Only two years ago Africa’s biggest economy, Nigeria is projected to drop to fourth place this year.

The pain is widespread. Unions strike to protest salaries of around $20 a month. People die in stampedes, desperate for free sacks of rice. Hospitals are overrun with women wracked by spasms from calcium deficiencies.

The crisis is largely believed to be rooted in two major changes implemented by a president elected 15 months ago : the partial removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the currency, which together have caused major price rises.

A nation of entrepreneurs, Nigeria’s more than 200 million citizens are skilled at managing in tough circumstances, without the services states usually provide. They generate their own electricity and source their own water. They take up arms and defend their communities when the armed forces cannot. They negotiate with kidnappers when family members are abducted.

But right now, their resourcefulness is being stretched to the limit.

No Money for Milk

On a recent morning in a corner of the biggest emergency room in northern Nigeria, three women were convulsing in painful spasms, unable to speak. Each year, the E.R. at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital in Kano, Nigeria’s second-largest city, received one or two cases of hypocalcemia caused by malnutrition, said Salisu Garba, a kindly health worker who hurried from bed to bed, ward to ward.

Now, with many unable to afford food, the hospital sees multiple cases every day.

Mr. Garba was sizing up the women’s husbands. Which source of nutrition he recommended depended on what he thought they could afford. Baobab leaves or tiger nuts for the poor; boiled-up bones for the slightly better off. He laughed at the suggestion that anyone could afford milk.

More than 87 million people in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, live below the poverty line — the world’s second-largest poor population after India, a country seven times its size. And punishing inflation means poverty rates are expected to rise still further this year and next, according to the World Bank.

Last week, unions shut down hospitals, courts, schools, airports and even the country’s Parliament, striking in an attempt to force the government to increase the monthly salary of $20 it pays its lowest workers.

But over 92 percent of working-age Nigerians are in the informal sector, where there are no wages, and no unions to fight for them.

For the Afolabi family in Ibadan, in southwestern Nigeria, the descent into poverty started in January with the loss of an electric tuk-tuk taxi.

Forced to sell the taxi to pay his wife’s hospital bills after the difficult birth of their second child, Babatunde Afolabi turned to occasional construction work. It paid badly, but the family managed.

“We had no thoughts about starvation,” he said.

But then, he said, cassava — the cheapest staple in many parts of Nigeria — tripled in price.

All they can afford now, he said, is a few biscuits, a little bread, and for their 6-year-old, 20 peanuts a day.

A Country Built on Gas

Nigeria is a country heavily dependent on imported petroleum products, despite being a major oil producer. After years of underinvestment and mismanagement, its state refineries produce hardly any gasoline.

For decades, the national soundtrack has been the hum of small generators, fired up during daily power outages. Petroleum products move goods and people around the country.

Until recently, the government subsidized that petroleum, to the tune of billions of dollars a year.

Many Nigerians said the subsidy was the only useful contribution from a neglectful and predatory government. Successive presidents have pledged to remove the subsidy, which drains a hefty chunk of government revenue — and later backtracked fearing mass unrest.

Bola Tinubu, who was elected Nigeria’s president last year, initially followed through.

“It was a necessary action for my country not to go bankrupt,” Mr. Tinubu said in April, at a meeting of the World Economic Forum in Saudi Arabia.

Instead, many Nigerians are going bankrupt — or working multiple jobs to stay afloat.

Mr. Garba, the hospital worker, used to be solidly middle class, even though 17 family members, including 12 children, depended on him.

After shifts at the hospital, where he is setting up the first statewide ambulance service in addition to working in the emergency room, for which he is paid $150 a month, he heads to the Red Cross. There he occasionally receives a $3.30 volunteer stipend for helping tackle a severe diphtheria outbreak .

At night, he works at the pharmacy that he and a colleague set up. But few people have money for medicine anymore. He sells about $7 worth of medication per day.

Last year, Mr. Garba sold his car when the gas subsidies were removed, and now takes a tuk-tuk to work. Unable to power the generator, he reads medicine labels at the pharmacy by the light of a small solar lantern. He can only afford to buy rice and cassava in small quantities.

Life under the previous government was very expensive, he said, but nothing like today.

“It’s very, very bad,” he said.

It’s gotten so dire that there have been several deadly stampedes for free or discounted rice distributed by the government — including one in March at a university in the central state of Nasarawa where seven students were killed.

Mr. Tinubu promised to create a million jobs and quadruple the size of the economy within a decade, but has not said how. The International Monetary Fund said last month the state has started subsidizing fuel and electricity again — though the government has not acknowledged this.

“There’s still very little clarity — if any — on where the economy is headed, what the priorities are,” said Zainab Usman, a political economist and director of the Africa Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

The Tapping Craze

A spate of new crypto-mining games that promise to generate income the more the user plays has people across Nigeria spending all day tapping on their smartphone screens, desperate to earn a few dollars.

People tap as they pray, in mosques and churches. Children tap under desks at school. Mourners tap at funerals.

There’s no guarantee any of them will ever benefit from the hours they put in mindlessly tapping.

Then again, they can’t count on the national currency, the naira.

The government has twice devalued the naira in the past year, trying to enable it to float more freely and attract foreign investment. The upshot: It’s lost nearly 70 percent of its value against the dollar.

Nigeria cannot produce enough food for its growing population; food imports rise 11 percent annually . The currency devaluation caused those imports — already expensive because of high tariffs — to explode in price.

Nigerians can become paupers almost overnight. So they’re searching for anything that might hold its value — or ideally, get them rich.

“People are looking for me everywhere,” said Rabiu Biyora, the undisputed king of tapping in Kano, opening one of his five foldable phones to add to his 2.7 billion taps on the TapSwap app. “Not to attack me, but to collect something from me.”

A relaxed, businesslike 39-year-old followed everywhere by young tech-savvy acolytes, Mr. Biyora would only say that he made “over $10,000” from the previous tapping craze.

He profits from everyone else’s taps, so he encourages them in posts on social media, and by providing free internet to anyone willing to sit outside his house. Nigerians don’t need much encouragement — despite the risks and volatility, Nigeria has the second highest cryptocurrency adoption rate in the world.

So every evening, struggling young men gather by Mr. Biyora’s home and tap.

Pleas for Help

In much of Nigeria, it’s normal to share with your neighbors and give alms to the poor.

Every day, people come to the gate of Kano’s Freedom Radio station to drop off sheets of paper containing heartfelt appeals for help paying medical bills or school fees, or to recover from some disaster.

A radio presenter chooses three to read out daily, and often a sympathetic listener calls in to pay the supplicant’s bill.

But lately the appeals have multiplied, and offers of help have dried up.

Good Samaritans used to come to the E.R. and pay strangers’ bills for them, Mr. Garba said. That rarely happens now either.

Still, Mr. Garba said, the number of patients coming to his hospital has almost halved in recent months.

Many of the sick never even make it. They can’t afford the 20-cent bus ride.

Pius Adeleye contributed reporting from Ibadan, Nigeria.

An earlier version of a map with this article misstated the name of a state in central Nigeria. It is Nasarawa, not Asarawa.
