12 Top African Safari Tours

Cross this must-do activity off your bucket list.

Spot the big five on your safari adventure.

Safari tours in Africa are just as diverse as the continent itself, though these types of trips typically require a large sum of money. Whether you want to spend a few days gorilla trekking in Uganda or a couple weeks spotting the "big five" – lions, leopards, African elephants, rhinos and Cape buffalos – in South Africa, you'll find an array of tours to best suit your needs. To help you narrow down your options, U.S. News compiled a list of 12 can't-miss African safari tours. Read on to find your once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Note: Some of the African countries in this article may require travelers to get an entry visa and certain vaccinations in order to visit. Jump to the list of visa and vaccination requirements by country at the bottom of this page for more information.

&Beyond

African Safari vacation

Visitors who don't want to sacrifice creature comforts while on safari will appreciate &Beyond's offerings. During the tour operator's 10-day Kings of the Jungle safari – which starts at $11,340 per person – travelers will see breathtaking natural wonders like the Ngorongoro Crater and the Maasai Mara savanna. But the highlight of this journey is its four-night stay at Tanzania's Serengeti National Park . After watching animals like wildebeest and zebras partake in the great migration while also spotting lions, giraffes and more, vacationers retreat to high-end tents and lodges with private bathrooms.

Wilderness Safaris

For some of Africa's most jaw-dropping scenery, opt for the seven-night Namibian Adventure Safari tour offered by Wilderness Safaris. This weeklong trip features visits to the Namib Desert's dune-filled Sossusvlei region (which you may recognize from the film "Mad Max: Fury Road") and the mountainous Palmwag Concession – a protected area with springboks, giraffes, black rhinos and more. The package's per person fee starts at $6,725, which covers most meals, park entrance fees, and transfers from Namibia's capital Windhoek and between the safari destinations. It also covers your stay at properties like the fully solar-powered Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp and the five-star Little Kulala lodge amid the stunning desert.

Wild Rwanda Safaris

Adventurous travelers sticking to a more conservative budget should consider Wild Rwanda Safaris' Bwindi Gorilla Safari. The three-day package features a full day in southwestern Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (a haven for silverback gorillas) and an adjacent Batwa Pygmy community. Wild Rwanda Safaris allows guests to choose between midrange, luxury and super luxury accommodation, which can help keep costs down if necessary. The company's packages include the $700 permit required to visit the gorilla park. The round-trip journey by safari vehicle to and from Kigali, Rwanda, and English-speaking guide services are also covered in all rates. The tour can begin from Kampala, Uganda, as well, although you'll spend longer on the road to the park.

Nomad Tanzania

African Safari in Tanzania

Sign up for Nomad Tanzania's Southern Tanzania safari and you're bound to get an up-close look at Tanzania's diverse wildlife. Offering eight days of activities, including game drives and boat trips in Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park, this safari gives you prime opportunities to spot lions, cheetahs, leopards and elephants, among other species. What's more, lodging at the company's campsites, select meals, and flights to and from Dar es Salaam are factored into the package's prices. Expect to pay a minimum of $5,700 per person; prices vary depending on the time of year, and the tour isn't offered in April and May.

Micato Safaris

(Courtesy of Micato Safaris)

If you want to explore multiple destinations while on safari with plenty of comfort (but a price tag to match), book the 15-day Micato Grand Safari. This outing by Micato Safaris starts with a two-day visit to Nairobi, Kenya, before continuing to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Maasai Mara National Reserve, and the Amboseli and Serengeti national parks for wildlife-viewing excursions. During your trip, you'll see Mount Kilimanjaro as zebras, gazelles and more roam in the foreground. The package costs at least $22,450 per person (based on double occupancy rates) and includes a hot air balloon ride, a camel tour led by members of the Samburu tribe, and lodging at upscale properties like Serengeti's Four Seasons outpost. The company also offers various extensions allowing you to explore other parts of Africa, from the island paradise of Zanzibar to the deserts of Namibia.

Rothschild Safaris

African safari vacation

If your ideal safari vacation consists of customizing your trip from start to finish, consider an outing with Rothschild Safaris. The company offers itineraries in locales like Zambia and Madagascar , but if you're hoping to catch a glimpse of the big five animals, the Essence of Tanzania safari is a good bet. This nine-day experience, which embarks from Arusha and returns there by plane, includes game-viewing drives in Tarangire National Park and accommodations like canvas tents and farmhouse lodges. Elephants, zebras and lions are just some of the animals you may spot during your journey. You'll also have the opportunity to go on a nighttime safari to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Lion World Travel

African safari vacation

As the trip name implies, Lion World Travel's 10-day Best of Cape Town & Botswana vacation package combines sightseeing in Cape Town, South Africa , with a classic safari in Botswana. During the latter half of the itinerary, visitors will explore Botswana's Okavango Delta (home to cheetahs, crocodiles, hippos and more) and Chobe National Park, which is believed to have Africa's largest elephant population. Prices start at $4,299 per person and cover game drives; many of your meals; and stays at luxury hotels, camps and lodges. You'll need to pay an extra charge for the flights within the tour (Cape Town to Botswana as well as Botswana to Johannesburg ).

Led by Neil Heron, a nature guide and wildlife photographer and writer, Bearded Heron Safaris' longest option features small game drives that may include lion, rhino, zebra and leopard sightings throughout all corners of Kruger. Rates are inclusive of in-park cottage accommodations and all breakfasts, dinners, snacks and drinks. Flights and park fees are not included. Discover Africa

For an inside-out trip through the natural wonders of Botswana, Discover Africa's nine-day Epic Botswana Adventure is a formidable option. You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for elephant spotting – before moving onto the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals from leopards to rhinos. The safari ends at the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a good place to admire wildlife like zebras and buffalo on the savanna as well as salt pans from a former lake. You'll stay in upscale lodges and campsites within close reach of the wilderness. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person), but international flights are excluded.

Wild Wings Safaris

africa safari air

If you're looking to have a broader experience that mixes in some history and beach time, consider Wild Wings Safaris' eight-day Battlefields, Bush and Beach Safari. You'll start off visiting some of South Africa's historic sites from the Boer wars, before moving on to the Phinda Private Game Reserve, which doesn't allow day visitors, so you should be able to look out for the big five without too many crowds. The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. As far as safaris go, this one is an affordable option, starting at about $2,795 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

Cuckoo Safaris

Aerial few of the world famous Victoria Falls with a large rainbow over the falls. This is right at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. The mighty Victoria Falls at Zambezi river are one of the most visited touristic places in Africa.

This tour company kicks off its tours from the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, with a host of safaris that range from two days to nine, across Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana, including some family-friendly choices. For an affordable option, there's the four-day Discover Victoria Falls, Chobe and Hwange Park safari, which will take you on two full-day tours to Chobe National Park (across the border in Botswana) and to Hwange, Zimbabwe's largest national park, where you should keep your eyes peeled for lions, elephants and more. This safari also includes a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. The price starts at $900 per person, which includes the tours plus breakfast, lunch and lodging in Victoria Falls; travelers will need to pay for entrance fees to the parks and dinner.

Compass Odyssey

africa safari air

Explore the savanna and deserts of southwest Africa with Compass Odyssey's eight-day Namibia Wildlife Safari. You'll visit a community-based conservation area in Damaraland – known for its desert-adapted elephants, oryx, giraffes and other wildlife – while staying in the rustic-chic Doro Nawas Camp. You'll also spend two days in Etosha National Park, seeking wildlife at the park's bustling waterholes by day and embarking on an evening game drive as well. Starting at $3,750 per person, the tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights; the company does allow the tour to be customized on request.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

African Fly-in Safaris

Imagine an African fly-in safari - flying in a small bush plane over the Serengeti or Kruger National Park, or wilder places like the Luangwa Valley. Way below you’ll spot wildlife such as elephant, hippo and giraffe. All the while you’ll watch the patterns of clouds on expansive savannah plains, and follow the twisting, turning course of great rivers like the Zambezi. Fly-in safaris can really enhance your holiday. They offer a convenient, comfortable means of travel to different destinations, either within one country or between different countries. Most safari destinations have a well-run network of routes that can land right in the heart of the bush. Some lodges even have their own private airstrip.

6 Questions About Fly-in Safaris

Sue Watt

Answered by

africa safari air

Why should I choose a fly-in trip?

“A fly-in safari can be the ideal way to make the most of your holiday in Africa. Many of the most popular countries for safari destinations are vast, countries such as Namibia, South Africa or Tanzania. Hopping from one place to another by air allows you more time to explore the places you really want to see. Domestic airlines and bush-flight companies have been offering these services for years, and most are very smooth operators. But it’s more than a convenience. There’s the comfort factor in avoiding long, tiring journeys by road, particularly when the infrastructure might be poor. There are enough bumpy drives on safari itself. There’s a real romance and excitement about flying in too. Feeling that sensation of flying over spectacular scenery, and getting a sense of the topography and the scale of where you’re staying. Descending over wide-open savannah. Doing a quick flypast to clear elephant, zebra or impala off the airstrip. Then landing to be greeted by your guide, ready to take you on safari. It’s the perfect start to a trip in the bush!”

Which countries are mostly geared to fly-in safaris?

“Most safari destinations will offer fly-in safaris, either with scheduled flights to main national parks, or private charter flights if your destination is less visited. Botswana is prime fly-in country. Short flights are offered between vastly different environments, from the Okavango Delta’s floods to the dry Kalahari plains, avoiding drives on difficult terrain. Zimbabwe too is a great fly-in option. It has the mighty Zambezi in Mana Pools NP, and the mesmerizing, sea-like Lake Kariba. There’s also the raw, remote Gonarezhou NP in the south, and the majestic Victoria Falls (Vic Falls). Zambia has good options too, covering South and North Luangwa national parks, the Lower Zambezi NP, and Livingstone for Vic Falls. Or combine a fly-in tour to the wilds of Zambia’s Luangwa Valley, with some island time – pop over Lake Malawi to Likoma Island for beachside respite. South Africa also combines well with other countries. You can include Kruger NP and Cape Town with Vic Falls, Chobe NP and other destinations. Kenya is an excellent fly-in destination with its popular national parks and the Indian Ocean coastline. Similarly, in Tanzania, fly-in safaris can take you to the famous Serengeti on the Northern Circuit, and remote Ruaha NP in the south. Then it’s a short hop to Zanzibar.”

What types of aircraft can be used and are they safe?

“The aircraft vary depending on your destination and whether you’re flying by private charter. Many bush airstrips are quite ‘rustic’ (often dirt or gravel) and unsuitable for landing larger planes. My soul sings when I get to an airstrip and there’s a tiny Cessna 206 waiting for me, with just enough room for the pilot and four passengers. They’re my very favorite type of bush flight! Cessna Caravans are good workhorses and a popular choice for flight companies, taking about 12 passengers. Then there are bigger planes like the De Havilland Dash that seat between 35 to 52 passengers. Whichever plane is waiting on the runway/airstrip, you’ll get a full safety briefing from the pilot and all have seatbelts you must wear. This is a very safe way of traveling. Incidents are extremely rare.”

What luggage restrictions are there on an African fly-in trips?

“Luggage space can be severely limited on bush flights. The Cessna 206 has just a small compartment under the seats, for example, and bags are often squashed in to fit inside. The rule of thumb is to take soft duffle bags rather than hard-framed bags with wheels. Some services are very strict about the weight limits they impose and will include your hand luggage and even jackets in the total. As a rough guide, most companies allow around 15kg per person. But check with your tour company and watch out for caveats (e.g. non-fee-paying children may have no baggage allowance). Don’t be surprised if an airline asks your personal weight either. This is often done so that they can balance the smaller planes safely. If you have excess luggage, you can sometimes pay for a freight seat on safari routes. This is cheaper than a second seat, but you’ll need to do this in advance. Bearing in mind that most lodges and camps on safari offer a laundry service, the trick is to pack light and wash often.”

How much will this safari cost?

“Most tour operators offer packages that include your bush flights. Fly-in safaris aren’t limited to luxury holidays and it’s difficult to generalize about the price of a fly-in safari. So much depends on the country you’re visiting, whether the parks are on a scheduled route or whether you need a private charter. Other factors are the distances involved, your level of accommodation and how many ‘hops’ you’ll be taking by air. In Botswana, prices might range from US$450 per person per day for a budget fly-in safari to around US$1350 per person a day for a luxury option. In comparison, prices for midrange fly-in holidays in Kenya start from around US$300 per person per day. In Namibia you’re looking at around US$600 per person per day. This is for a safari in your own private plane for between two and six guests, with an amazing view over Namibia’s spectacular landscapes.”

What should I consider when choosing a fly-in safari?

“The first factors to consider are your budget and the time you have available for your trip. Fly-in safaris are great for travelers who are short on time. It’s also worth deciding whether you want to experience more of a country than just the specific destinations you would be flying into. Driving from place to place gives a better sense of a country, its people and culture than flying over it. This is particularly so in somewhere like Rwanda, with its spectacular scenery, good roads and lively local scene as you pass by. If you suffer badly from motion sickness or are a nervous flyer, a fly-in safari might not be the most suitable option for you. Bush planes can be small and bumpy, and aren’t always conducive to a smooth flying experience. They also often stop at other bush airstrips on the way to yours, meaning several take-offs and landings. Having said all that, they are also an exciting experience and can really add to your safari adventure. On some of the smaller planes, you can even sit alongside the pilot.”

African Safari Airways: The Rise and Demise of an all-inclusive Charter and Tour Operator

africa safari air

Swiss entrepreneur Karl Jakob Rüdin, out of interest in branching out and creating a vacation getaway in Kenya, built a complete tourism package with a company that would take care of everything for passengers along the way.

This began the foundation of African Safari Club group of companies in 1967, a tour operator in which African Safari Airways would also be a part of.

africa safari air

The tour company began with their very own hotel, the Watamu Beach Hotel, being constructed in the coastal town of Mombasa.

africa safari air

Rüdin then formed his own airline to fly passengers to the hotel and to make sure passengers got the home to hotel experience.

Sweet smell of Success

The airline began by launching charter flights to European airports including London, UK; Frankfurt and Munich, Germany; Basel, Switzerland; Milan and Rome, Italy; Madrid, Spain; Vienna, Austria; Paris, France and Egypt from Mombasa’s Moi International Airport.

Initial equipment was provided by Bristol Britannia turboprop airliners from summer 1969 until disposal in 1972 when they were replaced with Douglas DC-8s.

Over the years African Safari would upgauge their Douglas DC-8s with larger variants replacing the smaller DC-8-30s with a Douglas DC-8-53 intercontinental airliner from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in August 1976 and operated the aircraft on its long distance routes until it was sold in November 1982.

Douglas DC-8-70s also joined the fleet in the early 1980s with the airline never holding onto more than two aircraft at a time since their purpose was small and specific.

But while the airline was small, the African Safari Club was expanding and by 1990 owned 17 hotels and four cruise ships.

Things fall apart

Unfortunately, this expansion would not be sustainable and the company started to take on debt as the oil crisis of the early 1990s drove down the demand for leisure travel.

The airline would also have to respond as the gas-guzzling Douglas DC-8s were replaced with an ex-KLM McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 in 1992.

Internally the company was also seeing issues as the African Safari Club was seeing executives clash on ways to solve the company’s increasingly dire financial situation.

The airline would also create a Kenya based subsidiary called SkyTrails, which would share the same zebra style livery as ASA and operate a fleet of small De Havilland DHC-6s and Cessna 206s around Kenya. SkyTrails would start operations in 1998 and would be closed in 2005 as the parent company continued to struggle.

In 1999, the Group, which included a domestic airline in Kenya operating a fleet of 7 aircraft, two cruise ships, 10 hotels, 5 lodges and a vast travel agency network in Europe, faced bankruptcy and engaged Kai Wulff (owner of Plexus Ltd. Consultancy) to manage all its operations and lead a turn-around.

Wulff made widespread changes but as he increased his footprint on the company, Rüdin stepped in and forced Wulff to go through him to get any changes to the properties and airline approved.

While Wulff prioritized an employee and property first approach, this would fail to live up to fruition as renovation plans were scrapped and the company failed to improve employee pay in favour of just having Rüdin pocket the money.

The group re-entered profitability in 2001 and while property changes would be small, airline changes would be substantial.

The idea of owning aircraft was done for African Safari Airways as the DC-10 would be removed from the fleet in 2002 in favour of leasing Airbus A310s from Hapag-Lloyd of Germany as Wulff’s reign ended in 2004.

Although African Safari Club would limber through the 2000s, the company used various asset sales to stay afloat.

Post-election Violence

The company operated as a vertically integrated group until its slow demise which started in 2007 when the Kenyans saw a political uprising take place following the election of President Mwai Kibaki, which many saw as rigged.

The violence across Kenya forced African Safari Club to issue a statement that their resorts were not impacted by the violence and that tourists would be safe on property. However, the scenes coming from Kenya were more than enough to drive people away.

By 2008 the company was a shell of its former self. African Safari had trimmed their fleet down to just nine. The airline was down to just one 233-seat Airbus A310 and said to be operating 54,000 passengers per year with a route map similar to the one they started with in the 1960s.

As a result of the drop in passengers and the downturn in use of the airline, ASA would be the next asset to be removed. The airline suspended charter flights and the Airbus A310 would be returned to its lessor before finding a new home at Mahan Air of Iran.

Now, the hotel operator would use third-party airlines to get passengers to their resorts, either by scheduled or chartered aircraft. But with a financial situation too dire, African Safari Club would continue its downward spiral until the entire company collapsed in 2011 and filed for bankruptcy.

Adventure across the African Sky

For an entirely different perspective and uniquely enthralling experience, an air safari in Africa will delight to no end. Lasting memories are sure to be created while peering at the vast expanse of the continent’s varied landscapes and casting a wandering and at the same time wondering eye from above.

Whether from the seat of a light aircraft or unobstructed in the basket of a hot-air balloon, visitors will have a bird’s eye view and get the true essence of Africa while exploring remote wilderness areas in this particular manner. To see all things wild and wonderful from another angle—the grasslands, forests, mountains, deserts, water and all species big and small—is a sight to behold.

There are a few details that one needs to be aware of when choosing an air safari in Africa. Specialist operators take the hassle out of the meticulous planning such a venture requires. This convenience does, however, come with a hefty price tag and it is advisable to budget in advance. An excursion in a light aircraft is probably the best option for those with limited time in their itinerary as it makes for easier and quicker travel. If lifting off in a hot-air balloon, safari-goers will get uninterrupted access to the breathtaking vistas of the continent.

African destinations where unique air safaris, in a light aircraft or hot-air balloon , can be experienced are bountiful. In Southern Africa , there is Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe while further north and to the east, the skies of Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya can be explored.

What should I pack for a Kenya fly in safari?

When preparing for a Kenya fly-in safari, it’s essential to pack wisely to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here’s a list of essential items to consider when packing for your fly-in safari:

  • Comfortable Clothing : Pack lightweight and breathable clothing suitable for warm weather. Opt for neutral colours that blend with the natural surroundings and avoid bright or dark colours that may attract insects. Don’t forget to include a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.
  • Sturdy Walking Shoes : A good pair of comfortable walking shoes is essential for game drives and nature walks. Choose closed-toe shoes that offer support and protection, as you may encounter uneven terrain during your safari adventures.
  • Sun Protection : Kenya’s sun can be intense, so pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF. Protecting yourself from the sun’s rays is crucial, especially during game drives or outdoor activities.
  • Insect Repellent : Mosquitoes and other insects are common in some safari destinations, so pack a reliable insect repellent containing DEET. It’s also a good idea to bring a mosquito net for added protection, especially if you’re staying in tented camps.
  • Camera and Binoculars : Capture the incredible wildlife moments and breathtaking landscapes by bringing a camera with extra batteries and memory cards. Binoculars are also handy for observing wildlife from a distance and enhancing your safari experience.
  • Reusable Water Bottle : Staying hydrated is crucial, so bring a reusable water bottle to refill throughout your safari. It’s important to drink plenty of water, especially in the African heat.

Africa Kenya Safaris recommends packing light and focusing on essentials. Remember to check with us, your specific safari operator, for any additional packing recommendations based on the time of year and your chosen destinations.

What should I wear on a Kenya fly in safari?

When embarking on a Kenya fly-in safari, it’s important to dress appropriately to ensure comfort and practicality during your adventure. Here are some clothing suggestions to consider for your safari wardrobe:

  • Lightweight and Neutral-Coloured Clothing : Opt for lightweight and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Neutral colours like khaki, beige, or earth tones blend well with the natural environment and help you blend in with the surroundings. Avoid bright colours or patterns that may distract or alarm wildlife.
  • Long-Sleeved Shirts and Trousers : Long-sleeved shirts and trousers provide protection against the sun, insects, and cooler evenings. They also offer an extra layer of defense against scratches or abrasions from vegetation or branches during bush walks.
  • Safari Hat : A wide-brimmed hat is essential to shield your face, neck, and ears from the sun’s rays. Look for a hat with a chin strap to keep it secure in case of gusty winds during game drives or walks.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes or Boots : Opt for comfortable closed-toe shoes or lightweight hiking boots for your safari activities. Choose footwear with good traction and ankle support to navigate uneven terrain and protect your feet from thorns or sharp objects.
  • Layers and Warm Clothing : Evenings and early mornings in some safari destinations can be cooler, so it’s advisable to pack a light sweater or jacket. Layering allows you to adjust your clothing according to temperature changes throughout the day.
  • Swimwear : If your fly-in safari includes a visit to a lodge or camp with a pool or nearby water bodies, don’t forget to pack your swimwear for a refreshing dip.

Remember, the key is to dress comfortably and practically while respecting the natural environment. Avoid excessive jewellery or accessories that may get in the way during activities. It’s also a good idea to check with us, your safari operator, for any specific dress code recommendations based on the time of year and destinations you’ll be visiting.

Such is Africa’s allure : that a bright fellow like Hemingway would lie in his tent, homesick before he’d even parted from a place that had come to seem more like home than home itself. We’re told these days to stick to the now, and the here, but Hemingway—like many of us lovers of Africa—knew that sometimes you can’t micromanage your passions. The Hemingway Wing Safari—a cherished favourite of ROAM guides – is a tribute, not only to Africa’s tendency to grab hold of our hearts, but also to the old-fashioned and cozy safaris of Hemingway’s time, with three tented camps (a little more luxurious than in Ernest’s day, but he was never one to avoid intelligently offered luxury), good looks at East Africa’s most legendary game parks (and a couple of lesser-known gems), and five swooping flights that bring us into great intimacy with Africa’s landscapes.

Three Great Reasons to Visit Africa –

Animals We Only Thought We Knew  – No other place on the planet remotely compares to Africa’s wildlife extravaganza. First-time visitors are invariably amazed by the abundance of big charismatic beasts and their lesser-known but fascinating supporting casts. It’s not especially unusual to see three or four or even all of the Big Five (lion, leopard, cape buffalo, elephant, and rhino) on a drive to a lodge or camp after a flight over Africa’s eloquent landscapes (such lyrical flights over such gorgeous scenery are yet another great reason to go on safari). But huge numbers aren’t the whole story. Since our earliest days most of us have been enveloped in African animal motifs: from the plush toys in our cribs, to countless books, games, movies, endless documentaries, and captivating videos. But when we see them in their homeland, smell them, watch them up close and at leisure, we realize we didn’t know these animals nearly as well as we thought. We suddenly notice a giraffe’s massive nobility, we see how incredibly interesting a galumphing hippo is, we’re struck by a lion’s lazily breathtaking litheness, and we realize as if for the first time how grand and beautiful and unusual these animals truly are.

Africa’s People –  People come to Africa to see the animals but they leave in love with the people. This is a common experience not particularly easy to write about. But few visitors are untouched by the bedrock hospitality and big, cheerful hearts of the African people. Every  safari that ROAM plans, whether it’s a custom-designed Bespoke Safari, or a guaranteed departure, small-group Classic Safari, is accompanied from beginning to end by an intensively trained guide a.k.a. “Safari Director”, who represents the best of the African spirit.

A Soothing Respite – Serenity. You probably don’t have to be reminded just how busy and tangled modern life can be. In most of Africa–especially and spectacularly on safari–life operates at a different pace. After flying to the continent, sightseeing in bustling Nairobi or Johannesburg or Cape Town, you fly to a lodge or camp in the bush, and suddenly you’re embraced by a deep quiet, a stressless serenity that lulls and comforts and ends up healthily intoxicating you. (ROAM carefully picks our lodges and camps with comfort, beauty, and this enriching calm foremost in mind). Elspeth Huxley, one of Africa’s greatest celebrators, put it well in The Flame Trees of Thika: “To depart on a safari is not only a physical act, it is also a gesture. you leave behind the worries, the strains, the irritations of life among people under pressure, and enter the world of creatures who are pressed into no molds, but have only to be themselves; bonds loosen, anxiety fades, the mind closes against the world you left behind like a folding sea anemone.”

What to Expect on the Hemingway Safari

Day 1: en route to a classic east african safari.

We board our flight and enjoy the anticipation of Africa.

DAYS 2 & 3: Getting acquainted with Nairobi

We’ll be met by your ROAM representative and whisked away to a place Hemingway spent many Hemingway-esque hours, the Fairmont Norfolk Hotel. We’ll visit the Giraffe Centre and the illuminating National Museum, pay our respects at the newly renovated home of Karen Blixen (who, Hemingway said more than once, should have received the Nobel Prize for literature instead of him). And we’ll have a welcoming lunch or dinner at Lavington.

DAYS 4 & 5: Larsens Camp in the great Samburu gamelands

We fly 200-plus miles north to the Samburu, in many ways the embodiment of the Africa we’ve been carrying around in our imagination since we were children (it was the home, for instance, of Elsa the lioness, of  Born Free  fame). Nurtured by the Ewaso Nyiro River, the Samburu is rugged, calmly inviting, and enveloped in the air of remote Old Africa, scented by acacia.

We’ll sojourn in one of two outstanding Samburu camps: Larsens Camp or Elephant Bedroom Camp, both set on the forested banks of the Ewaso Nyiro, much frequented by friendly elephants, whose meanderings we watch in comfort from the verandas of our superbly designed tents.* Game drives in the Samburu introduce us to its fabulous plentitude of large (and cunningly small) mammals, who are just the headliners in a fabulous cast of very natural, very intriguing characters.

DAYS 6 & 7: The Maasai Mara’s famed Fairmont Safari Club

South by air to the Maasai Mara, the northern reaches of the Serengeti–Maasai Mara ecosystem, earth’s richest wildlife habitat. Our base for explorations in the fabled Mara is the Fairmont Mara Safari Club, recently voted among the Top 20 in  Travel+Leisure ’s consequential World’s Best Hotels list. Surrounded on three sides by the life-giving Mara River, the Mara Safari Club is a masterpiece of appropriate and generously luxurious design. And it’s a great jumping-off place for extraordinary game drives in the mixed land- and waterscapes of the Mara. We’ll visit a traditional Maasai village as we wend our way through this natural wonderland, the kind of place that moved Hemingway to write, “I loved this country and I felt at home and where a man feels at home, outside of where he’s born, is where he’s meant to go.”

DAYS 8 & 9: Gazelles by the gazillions on the golden Serengeti

“How can one convey the power of Serengeti?” asked Cyril Connolly in  The Evening Colonnade . “It is an immense, limitless lawn, under a marquee of sky…The light is dazzling, the air delectable; kopjes rise out of the grass at far intervals, some wooded; the magic of the American prairie here blends with the other magic of the animals as they existed before man.”

The Serengeti sometimes does remind us of the American prairie, but in truth it can’t be compared with any other place on earth. Its kopje-dotted landscape, its vast and billowing skies, and especially its astounding wealth of wildlife make it one-of-a-gorgeous-kind. Flying via Nairobi and Arusha, we reach our base, Migration Camp, on the hippo-haven Grumeti River. Known for its superb tents (which, one traveler wrote, “have only one thing in common with normal tents: canvas”) and its dramatic setting in rocky outcrops, Migration Camp is revered for its tranquility (something of a Serengeti specialty).

DAYS 10 TO 12: Exquisite Lake Manyara and the Ngoronogoro Crater

We make the short flight from the Serengeti to Lake Manyara, then drive to our base for the next three nights, the quietly spectacular Manor at Ngorongoro, whose Cape Dutch cottages (with full suites) are tranquilly set within a coffee plantation adjacent to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The Manor, much admired for its cuisine and thoughtful service, offers a wealth of activities, from horseback riding, mountain biking and swimming, to estate walks and recreative spa lounging. We’ll make the thrilling drive up to one of earth’s wonders, the great, green, animal-nurturing caldera of a once catastrophically cranky, now beneficently mellow volcano, the Ngorongoro. Winding up to the crater’s rim puts us at Vail and Aspen altitudes of well over 7,000 feet, and being up that high, figuratively and actually, we may recall Isak Dinesen’s words in  Out of Africa , “The air of the African highlands went to my head like wine, I was all the time slightly drunk with it.” And then we zoom down to the Lost World’s lush and park-like floor (but which, make no mistake, is an animal, not a human, kingdom) for a day’s game viewing and a festive bush picnic. And we’ll game drive and view-catch at Lake Manyara, which our guy Ernest Hemingway thought “the loveliest lake in Africa.” The lake is a birder’s heaven, (it’s frequented by migratory species), and the water from its Crater Highlands–supplied springs makes it a forested redoubt for all the most glamorous large mammals, including the famed Manyara tree-climbing lions. (It’s a little irreverent, but tree-lounging might be a better description.)

DAYS 13 & 14: Return to Nairobi and on to home

We affectionately say goodbye to the great crater, lake, and deliciously homey Manor, and fly to Nairobi, where we’ll rest up in day rooms at the historic Norfolk or Boma Nairobi before our late evening flights.

What’s Included

It’s different in Africa. Hospitality is a way of life here: travelers are welcomed like old friends and luxury takes on new meaning—we go beyond what’s expected of even the most luxurious safari outfitter.

And we know that a big part of making you feel at home is a seamless experience. So most everything on your safari is included–from delectable meals to airport transfers to a safari hat. Even all gratuities are included. Apart from the occasional shopping opportunity, there is very little need for you to even carry your wallet. Rest assured, we’re with you every step of the way—and we will do virtually anything we can to make your journey a comfortable and memorable one.

Perhaps the best of what is included is what is difficult to quantify. The insights of your experienced guide a.k.a. “Safari Director”, for whom the bush is a home away from home. A talk with a Maasai elder, or a discussion with a descendant of an original settler. The pleasant, welcoming smiles of your hosts and the shared laughter around a ‘sundowner’ campfire. In short, we think of everything. And if there’s something we haven’t thought of, we’ll do our best to make sure it’s taken care of for you. Because we want to do more than just satisfy. We aim to amaze.

Typically designed for a small group of adventurers, your hot-air balloon safari takes you above and beyond the expected. This experience guarantees you a visual perspective that adds an additional layer of excitement to an already superbly varied Asilia safari programme.

As you soar over the iconic plains of the Serengeti , Ruaha , the grasslands of the Masai Mara , or the red earth of Tarangire , you appreciate more fully the enormity of the vast landscape. The perspective offers a sense of the distance needing to be covered by the migrating herds, and the challenges wildlife must overcome to survive. A hot-air balloon safari offers a unique vantage point as you glide over wildlife, witnessing their daily struggles and the photo opportunities these present.

With the right timing, a hot-air balloon safari can provide the ultimate panorama of the world’s most spectacular animal migration. Seeing the herds from above will put their numbers into perspective, leaving you in awe of the enormity of 1.5 million wildebeest. A hot-air balloon safari in Kenya and Tanzania is one of the most highly recommended experiences to add to your adventure-filled wildlife-viewing activities.

Lions walk along the plains unaware of the hot air balloons floating in the distance

Where to go on a Hot-Air Balloon Safari

Many of our beautiful boutique Asilia camps can offer hot-air balloon safaris that launch early to catch the glorious sunrises. We always advise you to bring layers of clothing, as it can be chilly aloft and in the early hours of the day. It’s a wonderfully romantic experience that culminates with a delicious and hearty champagne breakfast on the open plains.

The excursions are weather dependent and may be cancelled if conditions are too windy or rainy. Please chat with our friendly and knowledgeable safari planners to help you create the best itinerary to include this unforgettable adventure. Third parties operate these sky excursions.

Serengeti Balloon Safari

The Serengeti is one of the world’s most famous national parks. It’s name means ‘endless plains’ and from up high you can truly appreciate the vastness and abundance of space. If you time your Serengeti balloon safari just right, you may even see the awe-inspiring Great Migration with its massive herds of wildebeest and zebra dotting the plains.

As you drift over this landscape, keep an eye out hippo in their pools, plentiful plains game and, with a bit of luck, predators on their morning hunt.

Balloon safaris in the Serengeti can be from Namiri Plains , Dunia , and Sayari . Our Migration Camps, Ubuntu (in the south) and Olakira are ideal for balloon safaris over the Migration. The best time of year for a Serengeti balloon safari is during the drier months of the year; between June and November, and between mid-December to mid-March.

Masai Mara Balloon Safari

The staggering density of wildlife makes the Masai Mara one of the world’s most famous national parks, and a great place to enjoy a balloon safari. If you’re taking your hot-air balloon safari in the Masai Mara during migration season (August and September), you’ll see the true magnitude of the herds of wildebeest and zebra. If, however, you’re visiting after the rains, expect to see a magical sunrise over glittering rivers, pools with hippo, and plentiful plains game.

Masai Mara balloon safaris can be conveniently enjoyed from Rekero , as well as from Naboisho and Encounter Mara , and are best enjoyed during the dry months between June and October, and January and February.

Ruaha Balloon Safari

Operating exclusively during the dry season months from June to October, a balloon safari in Ruaha National Park offers spectacular views of the Ruaha River and the landscape dotted with giant baobab trees. Larger than the Serengeti National Park, the elevated viewpoint helps you understand the sheer enormity of this unique destination. The gentle and predictable winds through this season allow for low-altitude flying just meters above the grunting hippo, as well as climbing to great heights to enjoy the vantage point over this land.

Camps to select for a hot-air balloon safari include Jabali Ridge , Jabali Private House , Kokoko Camp , and Usangu Expedition Camp .

Tarangire Balloon Safari

The diversity of Tarangire National Park makes it a superb destination for a hot air balloon safari. The soft winds offer a slow, almost lazy, balloon safari, creating time to appreciate the landscape and wildlife below. Grassy plains, baobab trees, and rocky outcroppings, coloured with the red soil of this region, carved through by the Tarangire River and the lush green of the Silale Swamp. Watch for impressive herds of buffalo and elephant, their clean grey and black hides glinting in the sunlight as they emerge from the swampy waters.

A stay at Oliver’s can include a hot-air balloon safari.
